After exceeding her donations goal in a little over a month, a Melville teenager is challenging celebrities to dance the “whip” and “nae nae” for her viral fundraising campaign benefiting pediatric cancer research.

Jordan Belous, 16, started the #WhipPediatricCancer campaign Aug. 17 to raise awareness for pediatric cancer and raise money for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. Thousands, from as far as Australia and the United Kingdom and a close as the Huntington township, have since joined in by filming themselves dancing along to rapper Silentó’s smash-hit song “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae).”

As of Monday, Belous said she’s

raised $11,430, surpassing her original goal of $10,000.

Now, Belous has set her sights on raising $20,000, “I think we can definitely go past that milestone,” she said.

But to reach it, she’s attempting to recruit celebrities like TV personality Ellen DeGeneres, singer Taylor Swift and even Silentó.

“That’s really the dream,” Belous said of having DeGeneres join the campaign. “I think that she would be the perfect candidate. She’s a celebrity, so she would raise awareness. She has a lot of followers, a lot of fans. And she likes to dance and she likes kids.” Belous planned to mail a letter to DeGeneres this week.

She was also exploring way to reach Swift and has reached out to Silentó’s producer.

A Dix Hills home was damaged when a barbecue fire spread the house’s exterior.

A Dix Hills house caught fire when a lit barbecue was placed too close the home’s exterior on Saturday, fire officials said.

Nearly 30 Dix Hills volunteer firefighters and rescue personnel were dispatched to the house on Villanova Lane at around 6:40

p.m, with four engines and two ambulances, under the direction of assistant chiefs Tom Napolitano and Joe Williamson. The fire was quickly brought under control, and there were no injuries reported.

The damage was confined to

the rear exterior and roof eaves at the rear of the home.

Fire officials reminded residents to use caution while barbecuing, and to keep barbecues a safe distance from homes.

Board Approves Gateway Plan Renaissance Downtowns is one step closer to getting shovels in the ground in Huntington Station.

Following a year-long state environmental review, the Huntington Town Board during its Sept. 16 meeting adopted Huntington Station master developer Renaissance Downtowns’ Gateway Plan, a plan that could generate $1.5 million in new tax revenue and tens of millions of dollars in economic activity.

That next step includes site-plan approvals, building permits and, “eventually,” groundbreaking.

Renaissance proposes to build within walking distance of the Huntington Long Island Rail Road Station a hotel and medical-office building at the intersection of New York Avenue and Railroad Street; a mixed-use building with apartments and retail business behind the town’s Gateway Plaza at New York Avenue and Olive Street; and artists’ residences and display space in part of what is now a parking lot at New York Avenue and Church Street.

A 47-year-old Babylon resident driving a 2013 Toyota was arrested Sept. 19 at 7:49 a.m. at 1300 Walt Whitman Road in Melville. The man was reported to have parked his vehicle in the middle of a driveway exit, effectively blocking off traffic.

The Half Hollow Hills school board honored the district’s 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists at its Sept. 21 meeting.

The high school students enter the competitive academic program, founded in 1955, by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. In September, about 16,000 students around the nation were selected as semifinalists out of 50,000. Finalists will be notified in February and are then eligible to be selected for a Merit Scholarship.

prescription drug abuse that created year-round medication drop boxes. I-STOP expanded on the model of the take-back day to make medication drop boxes available year round for the safe and legal disposal of unused prescription drugs.

“One of the keys to stemming the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse is cutting off easy access to unused drugs in home medicine cabinets,” said Schneiderman. “That’s why New York’s groundbreaking ISTOP law expanded on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day to make medication drop boxes available year round all across the state. I encourage all New Yorkers to dispose of unneeded drugs at a local site on Take-Back Day, and to visit the Department of Health website to locate a year-round drop box.”

Prescription drug overdoses, and the related problem of heroin overdoses, are a major problem on Long Island. Heroin and prescription opioid overdoses killed 341 people on Long Island in 2014 The attorney general’s ISTOP legislation, signed into law in 2012, established New York as the first state in the nation to mandate that physicians consult a realtime database – where pharmacists report every prescription they fill for a schedule II, III, IV, or V narcotic – to check a patient’s history before prescribing one of these powerful drugs.

I-STOP mandated the rescheduling of hy-

drocodone to Schedule II, which ended automatic refills for this highly abused drug. The law also made New York the first state in the nation to mandate eventual universal e-prescribing.

I-STOP has been credited with helping reduce prescription drug abuse by addressing the problems of doctor shopping and the use of stolen or falsified prescriptions.

I-STOP’s goal is to enable doctors and pharmacists to provide prescription pain medications, and other controlled substances, to patients who truly need them.

At the same time, it arms them with the necessary data to detect potentially dangerous drug interactions, identify patterns of abuse by patients, doctors and pharmacists, help those who suffer from crippling addictions and prevent potential addiction before it starts.

FootGolf Comes ‘A Kicking To Long Island

The Town of Huntington’s Dix Hills Park Golf Course became the first official FootGolf course on Long Island this weekend. The town’s aims: to stoke an interest in golf among young people and generating extra revenue for maintenance costs.

Originally created in the Netherlands, FootGolf is becoming increasingly popular across the nation, so it felt appropriate to bring it here to Long Island, said Huntington Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, who got the idea from his brother-in-law, who lives in Augusta, Georgia.

“His kids are soccer players, he saw it played down there and they had all participated, so it seemed like a great idea to transplant here on Long Island.”

The game is played much like traditional golf, except players use a regulation No. 5 soccer ball instead

of a golf ball.

Rather than being struck by a club, the ball is kicked across the green, and players must attempt to sink the soccer ball into a 21-inch round cup, with the least amount of kicks as possible.

Don McKay, Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Huntington, said FootGolf at the Dix Hills Golf Course is a welcome addition.

“Instead of an empty course, you’ll have people coming who can bring their kids,” said McKay. “There’s no need for a club membership, no training, and no fancy equipment. It’s the perfect environment to relax and have fun.”

The Dix Hills course was the only official FootGolf course listed on the American FootGolf League’s website.

With the first two games hosted at the Dix Hills Golf Course last weekend, Cuthbertson believes FootGolf will be a hit moving forward, and

“If they want to add a little bit to the price for the round and raise money, whether it’s a thousand dollars or five dollars above it that’s great, and then that money can be used towards their favorite charity,” Cuthbertson said.

While there’s been excitement

over this emerging sport, PGA professional and Long Island resident George Dixon is worried that avid golfers might not find FootGolf to their liking.

“There’s mixed feelings among other clubs who take the game of golf seriously,” Dixon said. “However, if we can introduce some new golfers to the game through this alternative than that’s a success.”

Whether visitors stopped to enjoy the big-band sounds of the Northport Community Jazz Orchestra in front of Heartichoke, gathered to hear the trio Wild Ginger by Wilkes Gallery, or stepped inside Firefly Artists to be entertained by the stunningly gifted 16-year-old singer/guitar player

Photographer and Northport resident, Amy Connor, 55, was a firsttime exhibitor. Honing her craft seriously for the past five years, this past summer she sold her first works and felt brave enough to exhibit.

“I started out as a dancer many years ago then I became a mom and lost the ability to express myself creatively,” Connor said. After taking a course at a local mothers center Connor said she found that ability again, through photography.

Heather Johnson, director of the historical society, attributed much of

the event’s success to the hospitality local businesses and their willingness to give space to artists and musicians.

“Pretty much everyone I asked to participate said yes,” Johnson said, adding, “The collaborative effort is alive and well here. It warms your heart.” And the popularity for the residents? “It’s art, it’s music and it’s free!” Johnson said.

Painter and chiropractor, Steve Macagnone, 52, of East Northport, said while he has painted his entire life, he’s been selling his work for the past four years. On display at Firefly Artists were Macagnone’s breathtaking landscapes.

Artist Rosemary Romeo, 53, of Huntington, showed work in a num-

ber of wearable mediums. One interesting expression of her work was as she called it, “Reverse process freehand color removal.” This process involved her creating art on T-shirts by using various products depending on the fabric to remove color. “You don’t always know what colors are going to come out when you do it” she said, adding, “It’s really exciting.”

Noticing many of the artists, though creative throughout their lives, had begun to show and sell their work in their 50s Romeo, who formerly worked in accounting said, “We’re awakened again. It’s our time. It’s our season.”

BUSINESS Dee’s Celebrates 35 Years Of Style

Dee Raguzin and Donna Sasso of Dee’s Hair Studio in East Northport, are celebrating 35 years of business.

Dee’s Hair Studio in East Northport has a total of four styling chairs and two employees. But size doesn’t always count when it comes to keeping the customers coming “It’s a small-country town salon,” said owner and stylist Dee Raguzin, of East Northport, who opened the shop in September 1981. “When people start coming, they stay.”

Raguzin, 60, attended Wilfred Academy of Hair & Beauty Culture for cosmetology and hair design, from which she graduated in 1974.

Raguzin, who has lived in East Northport her whole life, said she wanted to open a small place where she could get to know the customers intimately. And that’s exactly what’s happened.

“We have customers coming for 30-35 years,” she said, adding that the store is well known among people in the town.

Since the studio opened, Raguzin said she has renovated the space three times. “It was a lot of hours and a lot of work, but it was worth everything I put into it.”

The studio, located at 128 Laurel Road in East Northport, offers services ranging from haircuts, coloring, highlights, perms and cutting-edge styling. It also specializes in dimensional coloring, which is a type of highlighting using multiple layers of hair colors. Raguzin said dimensional styles with auburns, brunettes and golden are

trending right now.

“We give a personal style for each individual,” she said, providing services to women and men, and customers of all ages.

“It’s quality service at an affordable price, with a warm and friendly atmosphere,” said co-worker of 30 years, Donna Sasso, 52, of East Northport.

“It’s not too expensive and it’s not cheap,” Raguzin said. “We have wash, cut and blow dry for $35, lift waves for $65, dimensional color for $50 and highlighting for $60 and up.”

These prices and a friendly environment have made for loyal customers.

With the holiday season approaching, the studio will soon offer specials such as free conditioning for wash cuts and blow dries, as well as a free gift with lift-wave services.

Northport resident Laura Moran, 51, has been coming to the studio for 14 years. She said both Raguzin and Sasso are always happy, very accommodating and create a warm atmosphere for customers.

Said Raguzin: “Our clients become like family, because we go through their lives and they go through our lives year after year.”

What It Means To Be A Nonprofit Board Member

By Mindy Wolfle Since I began networking over 20 years ago, I have found the best way to connect with compatible people was to become involved in notfor-profit organizations. These have included professional associations, business groups, charitable organizations and others in the not-for-profit world. The likely progression of being involved in one such group is to become a member of the board of directors or trustees. With these positions come great responsibilities and rewards.

From my own experiences, board involvement runs the gamut from exhilaration at the close of a successful fundraising event to utter frustration when a board cannot reach consensus on an important matter. Let’s face it: we’re all humans, with our own agendas, biases, expertise, people skills and levels of

patience. Me: not so patient.

There are many reasons why people join boards. At the top of this list is that they are asked to help make a difference in an organization by lending their leadership and other skills. I remember well when the late Paula Atlas asked me to join the board of directors of the Long Island Association for Business & Professional Women in the late 1990s. I truly was honored to be among a group of highly competent, professional women who helped pave the way for others like me. This was early in my business career, having left government after an 18 year stint.

Other potential board members are dedicated to a cause and find that a role on the board is the best way to carry out that dedication. And there are some individuals who are egodriven; it looks good on their LinkedIn page and within the circles that they travel. I do believe that this type is in the minority. Seeing firsthand how hard board members work

– and for no pay – it takes a unique person to give it his or her all for the betterment of a not-for-profit group.

Michele Pincus, a partner in the Uniondale law firm Sahn Ward Coschignano, said boards “are the heart of not-for profit-organizations.

My service on boards has allowed me to develop personal relationships with other board members that I would not have cultivated just by attending meetings. These relationships have allowed me to work with like-minded people, as well as serve the basis for future business referrals.” A former board president, Michele adds, “A good leader will select members who are willing to work for the benefit of the organization and lead committees with other enthusiastic members who are eager to further the mission of the organization.”

Vivian Leber, principal of Business Writing Source, has served on a number of boards and committees.

“It can be an adventure to join a

board,” said said. “Your role may evolve in unexpected ways and the experience may immeasurably expand your skills and spark new interests, as happened for me. If the person inviting you to join tries to minimize the time commitment, beware!

Figure it will be double or triple, especially if you are the type who gives 100 percent. Before agreeing to join, try to sit in as a guest at a board meeting, mainly to get a feel for the board's culture and to learn whether its members are truly mission-driven.” Good advice, indeed.

Vertical Horizon: Pop Rock With A Post-Grunge Edge SPOTLIGHT

By Chris Mellides cmellides@longislandergroup.com Originally formed as a two-piece with Matt Scannell and Keith Kane at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., Vertical Horizon has produced eight studio releases and has toured the world, playing to sold out arenas in the United States and across the globe.

“We just started playing shows together in Georgetown,” Scannell said.

“And over time it started to grow and people came to see us play and we started to develop a bit of a following.”

Founding member Matt Scannell described the band’s humble beginnings as instrumental in shaping its grassroots success. But that the band’s history since its founding in the early ‘90s has been an evolution in sound and group collaboration.

“I’ve found over time that if you loosen the grip and sort of let people bring what they naturally bring to the

The band is currently comprised of four members. Scannell, the group’s songwriter lead vocalist and guitarist, is joined onstage by bassist Jeffrey Jarvis, guitarist Donovan White and drummer Ron LaVella.

Together, these seasoned musicians create a sound uniquely their own, blending post-grunge rock with pop music overtones to create a sound that

appeals to a wide range of music lovers with diverse tastes.

Scannell, who originally hails from Worcester, Massachusetts, said Vertical Horizon is a project that has grown throughout the years. Much of the band’s music is influenced by Scannell’s travels and relocation to different parts of the country, he said.

Following the success of 1999’s “Everything You Want,” the album’s breakthrough title track and the string of records that followed, Scannell said

taking a break is what seemed natural in his journey as an artist. And when he made the move to Los Angeles and released 2013’s “Echoes From The Underground,” the band’s eighth studio effort following its hiatus, the record’s sound reflected the frontman’s fresh outlook and new sunnier surroundings.

“I’ve always written my music from a sort of ‘glass is half empty’ perspective and I think that’s probably because I lived my life that way,” Scannell said. “And I feel that by coming out here I’ve started to learn how to try to shift the focus to the ‘glass being half full.’

“I’m finding myself to be a bit happier out here,” he added.

With new material said to be in the works, Vertical Horizon is set to play a handful of gigs, including one at the Paramount on Oct. 8.

Where To Have Fall Fun Around Huntington

It’s time to take part in some fall fun, whether it’s picking pumpkins, going on hayrides or getting your pants scared off at horror houses. The good news is that you don’t have far to go if you live in the Town of Huntington. Five farm stands offer an array of activities. Take a look.

White Post Farms 250 Old Country Road, Melville, NY 11747 (631) 351-9373 whitepostfarms.com For its fall farm festival, White Post Farms is offering pumpkin picking, hayrides, pony rides, bouncy houses a petting zoo, children’s shows, a farm stand and snack bar. Mainly an animal

farm, White Post has been serving the community for 20 years. The farm is open seven days a week 10 a.m.-4 p.m., although people can stay until 6 p.m., said Event Coordinator Nancy Gangi. Admission during weekdays is $12 per person, with pumpkin picking at 59 cents a pound, and hayrides.

However, it’s farm festival, at $18 per person, runs on the weekends, which ends on Oct. 25. The farm will also be

open on Columbus Day. Along with its performances, which include a magic show, a dog show and an exotic bird show, the farm is introducing a horse show and a circus show from The Gizmo Guys. “It’s just good family fun,” Gangi said. “That’s what it’s all about: creating memories.”

Attempted Arson (Oct. 1, 1858) At 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1858, an attempt was made to raze the store of William A. Conant of Huntington. The chief clerk remained in the store late after the usual 8:30 p.m. closing and heard the crackling of fire. Upon searching the store, Tylston discovered a basket of straw on fire beneath an open window. A Long-Islander report infers that a match had been thrown through the window to light the straw. The perpetrator and the motive was not discovered.

Civil War Recruitment (Oct. 4, 1861) Capt. Walter R. Hewlett of Cold Spring Harbor recruited 25 men to organize the Cold Spring Home Guard and join the 102nd Regiment New York Volunteer infantry, offering Suffolk County residents their first chance to participate in the Civil War.

Businesses Reduce Workday To 14 hours (Oct. 1, 1869) Merchants in Huntington agreed on Oct 1, 1869 to close their stores at 8 p.m. instead of 9 p.m., reducing the length of the workday from 15 hours to 14 hours. The report stated the reduction was “out of common mercy to their employees, if no other consideration to themselves was in view.”

Starting Oct. 3, teens and adults can join in on the fun by walking through the haunted mansion, which is $6 per person. At nightfall, the corn maze also becomes haunted, said spokeswoman Karen Miller. The farm is open seven days a week, including Columbus Day, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., with weekdays offering hayrides, and pumpkin picking for 74 cents a pound. For those adults seeking a thrill, haunted hours are on the weekends from 7-11 p.m.

“She started at a very young age and now it’s just part of who she is,” Victoria, 48, said of her daughter.

Belous was 3 years old when her mother was diagnosed as an adult with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer typically found in children.

Victoria was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering and Belous credits the people there for saving her mother’s life.

Ever since she turned 7, Belous has used the experience as motivation to help exterminate pediatric cancer.

“Cancer doesn’t discriminate, it’s happening everywhere,” she said.

“This is all that I know. I really want to make a difference in kids’ lives.

It’s always been a passion of mine.”

Belous has worked with Northport’s Spencer Reid Foundation and Warrior’s Odyssey, a pair of nonprofits focusing on pediatric cancer. This past summer, she was a counselor for Sunrise Day Camp in Wheatley Heights, a free camp for children with cancer and their siblings. That’s where she was inspired to begin the #WhipPediatricCancer campaign.

“I had 3-and-a-half-year-old campers and they were whipping and nae naeing all summer,” she said.

“That was the moment that I realized that I had to do this.”

But celebrities, or anybody else for that matter, needn’t wait on a personally mailed letter before joining in. In fact, “It’s easy, fun and it doesn’t matter if you’re 3 or 83,” she added.

Anybody can do it in just four steps.

Step one: dancers record themselves throwing their fists forward (“the whip”) and then raising those hands to the sky while taking a step back (the “nae nae”). Step two: participants post the video to social media with the hashtag #WhipPediatricCancer. Step three: others are tagged in the post to encourage more videos and/or donations. Step four: the word is spread to keep awareness up and the donations coming.

The viral structuring of the campaign is modeled after the ALS Association’s “ice bucket challenge,” which made waves in 2014. Belous operates all of the campaign’s social media accounts and recruited her father, Seth, of Hauppauge-based IT company Flexible Systems, to create the campaign’s website (WhipPediatricCancer.org).

“Without social media, this wouldn’t have spread through just word of mouth,” Belous, a junior at Half Hollow Hills High School East, said.

Raising money and awareness for pediatric cancer research is a part of Belous’ life, largely because her mother, Victoria, is a cancer survivor.

As she awaits responses to her celebrity challenges, Belous said she has no plans to slow down her campaign, even as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (September) comes to an end.

“The kids’ battles aren’t over,” she said. “We’re going to keep ‘whipping’ until there’s a cure.”

“Pit bulls do better in assessments across the board, they are a tenacious breed, with many of their features bred into them over many generations,” Costa said. “Make no mistake, despite how they’ve been perceived, they will put their lives down for their owners.”

Cameron Jordan returned an interception for a touchdown and reeled in a pair of touchdown grabs to lead Hills West in a 28-20 triumph over Huntington on the Blue Devils’ homecoming day.

The Colts (2-1) jumped out to a 76 lead over the Blue Devils (1-2) in the first quarter with a 19-yard touchdown run by junior Alexander Filacouris. Then, in the second quarter, junior wide receiver Jordan hauled in a nine-yard touchdown catch from senior quarterback Anthony Lucarelli to extend Hills West’s lead, 14-6 come halftime.

Huntington’s Doug Taylor exploded with a 50-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to tie the game 1414, but the Colts responded with a big play of their own. Jordan hauled in another touchdown from Lucarelli, this time for 31 yards, a blow that the Blue Devils wouldn’t recover from.

Hills West further sealed the game when Jordan, also a defensive back, returned an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, extending the Colts’ lead to 28-14 in the Division II showdown.

Lady Thunderbirds Shut Out Walt Whitman

The Thunderbirds of Half Hollow Hills High School East’s girls soccer team blanked the Wildcats of Walt Whitman High School on Saturday to claim a 2-0 win in League II play.

Emma Schleimer recorded a goal and an assist to lead Hills East to victory. Eleni Sofroniou scored the game-winning goal for the Thunderbirds in the first half.

Mackenzie Kagan made three saves to preserve the shutout.

The win is the second in league play this season for the Thunderbirds, who moved to even with Whitman in a tie for fourth place.

Hills East started league play on Sept. 9 with a 2-1 win over Connetquot. In that game, both Brooke Delano and Samantha Francucci recorded their first scores of the young season. Emma Schleimer and Delano each record-

ed assists in the win. Goalkeeper Kagan made 13 saves to preserve Hills East’s lead.

From there, the Thunderbirds stumbled a bit, dropping three games in a row in League II play.

On Sept. 17, Hills East lost a road game 2-1 to Bay Shore, fell 3-0 on Sept. 19 to visiting Northport and were defeated 1-0 by Lindenhurst on Sept. 24.

The Thunderbirds responded on Saturday, however, with a win over Whitman, ending the Wildcats

three-game win streak.

After press time Monday, the Thunderbirds were scheduled to welcome Central Islip for another League II game.

Today, Hills East will travel to Connetquot for a showdown of the Thunderbirds – both schools share the same mascot name. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Connetquot High School.

On Oct. 7, Hills East will host Bay Shore with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
