Ballet Dancer Making Strides In ‘Nutcracker’

Sarah Gavilla has performed Clara in productions of “The Nutcracker” for the past two years, including last year with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular’s National Tour. She’ll return to that role this holiday season, but the 15-year-old Melville resident is stepping things up with a more challenging choreography alongside two principal dancers from the New York City Ballet.

Sarah, who attends St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington and studies ballet at Eglevsky Ballet School in Bethpage, will be part of Eglevsky’s production at the Tilles

Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of LIU Post Campus in Brookville Dec. 19-20.

“This is more strictly ballet,” said Sarah’s mother, Christine Gavilla. She said Radio City offers entertainment value for little kids.

The principal New York City Ballet dancers include Savannah Lowery, who stars as the Sugar Plum Fairy.

“I definitely think it’s going to be a great experience,” said Sarah. “It’s going to be a lot different than the other ‘Nutcrackers’ that I’ve done in the past. There’s a lot of very challenging choreography and I’m excited.”

Plumitallo Seeks Fourth Term As Fire Commissioner

Three-term incumbent Michael Plumitallo is running unopposed for reelection to the Dix Hills fire district’s board of fire commissioners.

Plumitallo, 55, has been a Dix Hills resident for the last 45 years. He’s married to wife Hope and the couple has a 17-year-old daughter, Victoria.

Over the last nine years, the family has also worked to organize the Sunshine Toy Drive, an annual drive that has helped thousands of children.

Plumitallo said he’s a retired New York City Police Officer and has been in the fire service for 35 years. “I just like helping. It’s good to give back.”

Plumitallo is seeking a five-year term.

During his time on the board, Plumitallo said he has helped to upgrade the district’s fire houses, part of an overall push to upgrade the district’s technology to 21st-century standards.

Also, he said, “We were the first in Huntington to institute a paramedic program; we have paramedics 24/7; we have the best equipment for EMS in fire service and we keep it within the governmental tax cap every year.

So we’re giving the best service and staying within the governmental increase.”

Moving forward, he said the district is dealing with “unfunded mandates

out there that we have to find money for. They’re hurting us. They put requirements on us that run hundreds of thousands of dollars and we have to find the money for it.” This has forced the district to find ways to cut back, he said.

Even though he’s running unopposed, Plumitallo said that doesn’t change his campaign strategy. “I run very hard and I appreciate people coming out. I appreciate no one running against me. I think it’s saying that I’m hopefully doing a good job.”

Polls will be open 4-9 p.m. Dec. 8 at Dix Hills Fire Department headquarters, 115 East Deer Park Road.

There will be no additional items on this year’s ballot.

Eckstein Runs Unopposed For Fire Commissioner

Wayne Eckstein, 65, a member of the Melville Fire Department since he was 18 years old -- first as a volunteer firefighter and later as a line officer, where he was elected to train volunteers and handle administrative responsibilities at the firehouse -- is running unopposed for what would be his first term as fire commissioner of the department.

Eckstein, whose family moved to Melville when he was 15, said he’s confident that he’ll do a good by listening to the concerns and sugges-

tions of the firehouse’s members and chief.

“I was never really into the business end ... but I think I’m very personable and I have the time to sit and learn and see what goes on and hopefully help them with the decisions to make the department better,” Eckstein said.

Eckstein previously worked at Consolidated Edison for 33 years as a mechanic before retiring at the age of 55. After that, he worked at The Greens at Half Hollow golf course.

With his two grown sons in the FDNY, Eckstein said that his free time would be better spent using the

experience and knowledge he’s gathered over his 50 years with the firehouse to make it run as smoothly as possible.

“I’m retired, so I have time to devote to it,” he said. “My kids are grown and I think we have a pretty good board in there and a lot of good ideas. I’d like to see things get done.”

He added, “I want to help the department buy the equipment they need for training, and I think I’m in a good position now to do it.”

Polls for the Melville fire commissioner position will be open Dec. 8 from 1-9 p.m. at 531 Sweet Hollow Road in Melville.

Feeney Seeks Reelection On Water Board

Dominick Feeney, of Melville, is seeking reelection for one open commissioner seat on the South Huntington Water District board. The seat holds a three-year term.

Feeney, 83, who has been on the board for seven years, is chairman of the Suffolk County OTB and a retired

director of operations for general services in the Town of Huntington, where he worked for 40 years.

Feeney is a past commander of VFW Post 1469 in Huntington Station and was named to the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame

by Sen. Carl Marcellino in 2014.

Feeney said he was proud that the district was voted the best tasting water in Suffolk last year, and that he

and the other two commissioners strive to reduce the water rates and “make people happy.”

Voting for the South Huntington Water District polls election will take place from 3-9 p.m. Dec. 8. Polls will be at the district’s headquarters, located at 75 5th Ave. S. in Huntington Station and at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 2611 New York Ave., Melville.

The Thundercolts of Half Hollow Hills was among teams from across Long Island who competed at the the fourth-annual Half Hollow Hills Robotics Invitational on Nov. 14. The event, produced by the School-Business Partnerships of Long Island and the Half Hollow Hills Central School District, was staged at High School West and had robotics teams from 20 school districts participating in a game called “Recycle Rush.”

The official game of the 2015 FIRST Robotics Competition, an international high school robotics competition, Recycle Rush is a recycling-themed game played by two alliances of three robots each. Robots weighing up to 120 pounds maneuver and score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, cap those stacks with recycling containers, and properly dispose of swimming pool noodles, which represent litter.

High school robotics programs immerse youngsters in critical mathematics, the science of physics and the field of engineering. These programs provide an engaging learning environment and strive to enhance problem solving skills, cooperation and teamwork.

The Thundercolts, Half Hollow Hills school district’s robotics team, was one of 20 teams to participate in the fourth-annual Half Hollow Hills Robotics Invitational on Nov. 14.

The Half Hollow Hills Invitational is designed to showcase the benefits of these robotics programs to students, schools, communities and local businesses. This annual exhibition also serves as an important tuneup as teams prepare for their com-

petitive build season, which begins each January. In January 2016, the next FIRST Robotics Competition game will be announced.

Along with the Thundercolts of Half Hollow Hills, other Town of Huntington school districts that par-

Damaged Fencing Police received a report alleging that an unknown person damaged a section of PVC fencing outside of a Melville residence on Cecil Court. The incident was believed to have occurred Nov. 21 at around 8 p.m.

Clothing Stolen From A GMC An unknown person broke the window of a 2004 GMC truck that was parked in the driveway of a Dix Hills home on Parsons Drive and made off with assorted clothing. The incident was thought to have occurred Nov. 23 at approximately 1 a.m.

Stolen Shades And CDs Police received a report alleging that an unknown person entered a 2015 Lexus RX parked outside of a Dix Hills residence and stole an assortment of items, including a pair of Chanel sunglasses, a pair of Tiffany sunglasses and 10 compact discs. The incident was believed to have occurred between Nov. 22 at 11:30 p.m. and Nov. 23.

On Nov. 23, police received a report that an unknown person allegedly stole a 2003 Dodge Neon that was left running with the keys in the ignition at the Walt Whitman Shops parking lot in Melville.

The incident was believed to have occurred on the same day the report was filed at around 6:15 p.m.

Egging Incident Police received a report claiming that an unknown person threw eggs at the outside of a Melville residence on Esmond Avenue and damaged two window screens. The incident was thought to have occurred between Nov. 21 at 10 p.m. and the following day.

At just 8 years old, Victoria Plumitallo learned that there are families much less fortunate than her own that struggle to provide during the holiday season. She felt compelled to help.

Over the course of the last nine years, Plumitallo, who is now 17, has watched her initial interest in helping the less fortunate endure and grow into a not for profit called the Sunshine Toy Drive — a name that draws its meaning from Mike Plumitallo’s affectionate nickname for his daughter.

Supplying local families in need with toys and clothing during the holiday season, the Sunshine Toy Drive began in 2006 as a small operation and has since grown to accept thousands of toys and clothing items for Long Island families who cannot afford gifts to give during the holidays.

“My daughter started the drive when she was in fourth grade, and she was very persistent, so we figured we needed to do something,” Victoria’s mother, Hope, said. “We started making some phone calls and finding out about toy drives, and then we decided to start our own.”

Plumitallo said that her family collects donated toys and clothes which are given away in a designated “toy shop” area with tables organized by gender and age. With help from a volunteer “personal shopper,” parents first choose their children’s gifts, then bring them to, wrapping stations where volunteers wrap and package it all.

“Parents can come and get to shop for their children with a personal shopper, and then when they pick everything out we wrap it up for them, put everything in a big black garbage bag, and

She added, “It gives the parents a sense of participation instead of just going in and having toys dropped off, they actually get to come and pick up what they want for their kids.”

Plumitallo also said that her daughter has been taking a more active role with organizing the toy drive — shortly after the drive achieved not for profit status earlier this year. And that her daughter’s classmates volunteer their time to help make the drive a yearly success.

“This really teaches you what the holidays are

all about and even though it’s an awful lot of work, when the day comes and you just see the look on people’s faces, it puts everything back in perspective for you,” Plumitallo said.

New children's toys and clothing items may be left at the Dix Hills Fire Department Headquarters at 115 East Deer Park Road, just north of the Northern State Parkway. Donations may be brought to the drop box at the firehouse, anytime day or night up until Dec. 18. The drive is set to take place the following day on Dec. 19. Owners of the Fad accessories store will go before the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals next week to seek a special-use permit for parking to build seven new apartments on two floors above the current one-floor operation.

Applying as Axcel Realty Corp., Donna and Allan Axelowitz need the board to approve a special-use permit to use municipal parking.

They will go before the ZBA during a public hearing at its Dec. 3 meeting, slated for 6 p.m. at Huntington Town Hall.

Fad, at 415 New York Ave., is one of several businesses damaged by a nearby March 2, 2014 fire.

“They [Fad] suffered fire damage along with Red [restaurant] and it’s been slow coming back. They’re looking to go forward,” said Ax-

cel’s attorney, Jim Margolin.

Margolin said the proposal consists of both one- and two-bedroom apartments.

“They think there’s a need for apartments in the village,” Margolin said An unrelated proposal to build apartments atop Red restaurant was given the go-ahead by the town in August. Owners of the restaurant plan to erect a second story consisting of two apartments, a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom. The town’s planning board approved the proposed site plan in August under the condition that a total of two parking spaces in the lot behind Red would be dedicated to apartment residents.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP Spencer’s Next Target: E-cigarettes

BY KARL GROSSMAN Suffolk County’s pioneering initiatives against smoking are, thankfully, continuing—with Legislator William Spencer (DCenterport), a medical doctor, leading the fight and debunking the baloney of the tobacco industry. Many of the laws enacted in Suffolk have been among the earliest anti-smoking measures in the state and nation.

The 18 members of the

legislature recently voted unanimously to ban smoking in common areas—including halls, lobbies, courtyards, stairs, parking garages, laundry rooms, eating areas and meeting rooms—of “any property containing 10 or more dwelling units.” This is to include condominiums, senior and assisted living facilities, long-term health care facilities and apartment buildings. Also, smoking would be banned within a 50-foot radius “of all entrances and exits of such buildings” and within 50 feet “of any ventilation intake that serves an enclosed area.

Like Spencer, the first physician on the legislature, she has an unusual background for a legislator: she was an assistant principal of a middle school before becoming a legislator, taking a whopping $40,000 yearly salary loss.

Martinez says she drew up the bill after receiving “numerous complaints” from residents in her district “who suffer respiratory issues” and live in multiple dwellings. “People should be able to breathe freely in their own homes,” she said.

On Nov. 19, two days after the vote on the measure, the “Great American Smokeout Day” was held in Suffolk. Participating were Bellone, Spencer and Martinez, officials of the county’s Department of Health Services—an agency that has been highly active in taking on smoking—along with representatives of the American Cancer Society of Long Island.

“Suffolk County has been a trailblazer in promoting the health and well-being of its residents and nowhere is that more important than in our tobacco control efforts,” Bellone said. “Not only are clean indoor air laws among the strictest in the nation, Suffolk County was one of the first municipalities in the nation to ban the sale of tobacco to those under the age of 19 in 2005 and age 21 this past year.”

The “Great American Smokeout Day” in Suffolk and across the U.S. is a day when smokers are encouraged to quit smoking for the day—and make a plan to quit for good.

Spencer, who authored the law raising the age to purchase tobacco products in Suffolk to 21, specializes in otolaryngology—the branch of medicine involving the ear, nose and throat.

The latter is especially

hard-hit by smoking. He is a surgeon. He is also chief of otolaryngology at Huntington Hospital, a clinical professor at Stony Brook Hospital and president of the Suffolk County Medical Society.

Spencer has been a member of the legislature since 2012, and having him on the county’s governing body has been most valuable in the battle against smoking and cut through the tobacco industry’s hogwash. Spencer notes that it has been helpful for “my colleagues on the legislature” to have him there “because I’m a physician and I can deal with the science.”

His next target: more action in Suffolk on e-cigarettes.

Smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and death in the world, the nation— and Suffolk. Although smoking declined in the U.S. from 42 percent of adults in 1965 to 18 percent in 2013, 42 million U.S. adults still smoke—with smoking responsible for one in every five deaths. In Suffolk, the percentage of adults who still smoke is estimated by county health officials at 14 percent.

After undergoing improvements, the outdoor ice rink at Christopher Morley Park in RoslynNorth Hills opened for the 2015-2016 winter season on Nov. 30.

In total, Nassau County provides three separate ice-skating rinks for use by residents, including outdoor rinks at Christopher Morley and Grant Park in Hewlett, which are open from late November-March, and an indoor rink at Cantiague Park in Hicksville that is open yearround. All rinks provide public skating sessions, lessons, ice hockey sessions and opportunities to rent the ice for birthday parties and other events. All three facilities offer skate rentals.

Three-Time Cancer Survivor Dedicated To Service

Greenlawn resident, firefighter, U.S. Army veteran and three-time cancer survivor Al Statton is collecting non-perishable food items and personal necessities for homeless veterans sheltered at the Salvation Army’s Northport Veterans Residence, which is located on the ground of the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Albert “Al” Statton might not be the only Long Islander dedicated to collecting supplies for veterans in need, but he is surely one of a kind.

A U.S. Army veteran with 30 years of service, he has volunteered for the Greenlawn Fire Department for the last 24 years and is a three-time cancer survivor.

His bouts with cancer drove Statton, 64, to give back to his community in the form of food and supply drives that have benefited veterans in need over the last two years – drives

he started while still undergoing cancer treatment.

“During the first cancer, a lot of my energy was focused on surviving the treatment and I had a very difficult time. When I got the subsequent second and third diagnoses of cancer, I had a problem with depression because everyone was telling me what I can’t do, what I shouldn’t do and what I won’t do,” said Statton, who was diagnosed with metastatic tongue cancer in 2009, prostate cancer in 2013 and then colon cancer in 2014.

He underwent a total of 10 surgeries, and nearly died on Dec. 18, 2009 from severe radiation burns caused

by chemo and radiation therapy that made it nearly impossible for him to eat and breathe.

“I tried to take the focus off the misery of the treatment and refocus it on something that was greater than me.”

Statton said he took a “negative,” the pain and sorrow caused to him and his family by the diagnoses and treatments, and turned it into a “positive,” making donations to the Salvation Army whenever he was underwent chemo and/or radiation therapy at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

“I created a need so that I could go

on,” Statton said.

That need has since vanished, along with Statton’s cancer, but that hasn’t stopped him from continuing his mission. “They would say I’m cured, but I just like to say there’s no active cancer. That way, my feelings aren’t hurt so bad” if it comes back, he said with a laugh.

Under the name “Operation Enduring Care,” he’s collecting nonperishable food and other personal necessities like toiletries for needy veterans staying in the Salvation Army’s Northport Veterans Residence. The residence is located on (Continued on page A9)

the ground of the Northport VA and can host up to 50 homeless veterans on any given night, but is maintained by the Salvation Army and serves as an entry point for veterans to get involved in all of the services offered by the Northport VA. Those who typically seek shelter in the Salvation Army residence are recently homeless or are in immediate need of help.

Statton said, “I’m trying to target those that are in immediate need of care, comfort and food, for the individuals who are brought in off of the street.”

The effects of Statton’s efforts have been felt by Northport VA brass as well.

“Albert should be proud of what he’s doing for his fellow veterans,” said Joe Sledge, public affairs officer at the VA. His donations “have helped Salvation Army homeless veterans’ residence carry out its mission of taking care of the veterans not only while they’re here on the grounds of the medical center, but when they leave, since they leave with these nutritional items that will help sustain them in their next steps of life.”

A Salvation Army representative was unable to be reached for comment before deadline.

Over the last two years, Statton

said he and his wife Connie of 35 years have personally provided veterans with 2,500 meals and have collected over 10,000 items. When the couple’s youngest child, Aaron, was serving with the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, they collected 7,000 lbs. of items under the name Operation Home Comfort and shipped them overseas for active-service members.

Statton was raised in Westbury where he attended Westbury High School before heading to Baylor University in Waco, Texas, graduating in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in laboratory technology. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty from 1970-1990 and remained in the reserves until 2000. After retiring from the Army, he began volunteering with the Greenlawn Fire Department, where he is now a captain and typically volunteers 40 hours a week.

Statton and his wife have five children: Albert IV, Aerin, Aaron, Heather and Samantha.

As volunteers, Statton and Connie do not charge for gas or time when making pickups and 100 percent of the donations they collect are given to those in need. Items can be dropped off at the Greenlawn Fire Department headquarters at 23 Boulevard Ave. in Greenlawn.

“The thing about cancer is we have a tendency to think of it as just words, but it’s a profound condition that will put you in touch with your humanity and your mortality,” Stat-

ton said. “A lot of things that weren’t important become important.”

The little things become important, he added, such as “making sure you help somebody, are kind to somebody and that you have more good memories than bad memories.

“Now that’s important, it’s not necessarily a scratch off and millions of dollars, because I wouldn’t know what to do with it,” he said with a laugh. “I can’t count that high anyway.”

When it comes to understanding what a customer likes in a comic book, Menachem Luchins, owner of Escape Pod Comics, finds the answer through his customer's favorite TV shows, movies or novels.

“I will spend the time really trying to pin down a book that will work for them,” said Luchins, 33, of Huntington Station. “A big part of what makes us stand out is I try to stand by our catch phrase that comics are for everyone.”

One of the joys to owning a store is helping customers find the connection and discover a story that resonates with them, Luchins said.

“I’ve come in here a few times when I come and visit home [and] he’s always incredibly willing to help,” said customer Rosanne Libretti, 23, who was born and raised in Cold Spring Harbor.

As a kid growing up in Huntington, Libretti would go to another comic book shop, and said that she would have loved it if Escape Pod

Escape Pod Comics, located in the heart of Huntington Village, offers a variety of comic books for genres ranging from nonfiction to science fiction and fantasy.

At Escape Pod Comics on Main Street in Huntington, owner Menachem Luchins says comic books are for everyone. were around instead.

“It was a very like stereotyped image of an adult man interested in comics and collecting things, not really accessible for a 13-year-old girl,” she said adding that Escape Pod is open and has more variety.

Opening in February 2013, Escape Pod, located in 302 Main St. in Huntington village, offers a diverse assortment of comics, from non-fiction, to drama, to superheros, science fiction, fantasy and more.

“We have a whole kids and young adult room because I would say the strongest market in comics right now are 13-year-old girls,” Luchins said.

The shop, which is less than 1,000 square feet, also has a recommended section from Luchins and new books section.

As the latest editions come in every Wednesday, Luchins said, more than 100 new books are brought into the store. Selling comic books and some collectables, the

layout of the shop is organized so that customers can explore less collectables, less gaming and more comics.

From last week, Nov. 25, customers were excited to get their hands on the latest comic by Frank Miller, “Dark Knight III: The Master Race Is Coming,” said Luchins, noting that the core to most comic shops are customers who reserve the new comics as they come out.

While comic books like Invader Zim and Rick and Morty are sold quickly at Escape Pod, Luchins said other popular comics include Saga, The Walking Dead, Batman, Ms. Marvel and Iron Man. Living in Huntington for nine years, Luchins opened up the in the village because the town itself is very artistic.

Now working with a store manager, Luchins is in charge of ordering the merchandise, the finances and customer service, which he said is overwhelmingly positive.

“We’ve been pulling people all over the Island because they appreciate a store where I will give my honest opinion about something, I’m not going to just sell it to someone,” he said.

In his journey as a comic book enthusiast, Luchins said his store has continued the tradition of a particular shop that was previously located in Brooklyn called Rocket Ship.

“That was sort of the store I liked and when they closed I couldn’t find any other place,” Luchins said. “So in my mind, we’re sort of the Escape Pod from the Rocket Ship, carrying on the legacy of quality over collectability.”

It was a damp, drizzly Saturday, and many wondered how big the crowd would be at the annual Huntington Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting. But then the rain let up just in time and thousands of people poured onto the sidewalks of the parade route along New York Avenue and Main Street.

“We were debating whether to come, but she wouldn’t let us not come,” she said of Mia, 7. “They look forward to this.”

There were also performances by local dance groups.

Samara and Rayna Kolodny, of Smithtown, were among the 50 or so kids to attend the crafts event at the library, where there was a reading of two books and six different crafts stations.

“It’s really fun,” said Samara, 7, who wants to be a ballerina and a chef.

The East Northport Fire Department’s float was among the standouts at the annual Huntington Holiday Parade on Nov. 28.

In the first-ever gingerbread contest, Fanny Cakes of Greenlawn was the winner.

Kristyn Weiser, the 26-year-old owner of Fanny Cakes, said “it was so much fun to create that house and put our spin on the gingerbread,” adding that it was the first gingerbread house she and employee Gia Gatien had ever made.

The five gingerbread houses that competed will be on display at Town Hall at 100 Main St. in Huntington until just after the New Year.

What began as a quirky holiday showing for the Northport Hardware shop on Main Street in Northport a decade ago has since grown to become a holiday tradition and a spectacle for North Shore residents.

Several hundred onlookers gathered outside the hardware shop on Main Street Saturday in anticipation of the lighting of the famous leg lamp in the storefront window.

The leg lamp lighting pays homage to the holiday movie “A Christmas Story,” which was projected onto the far wall just outside the hardware store for all to see.

In what has become standard affair, Mayor George Doll told the story behind the leg lamp and how it was acquired. Each year, his storytelling becomes more and more theatrical and oozes hyperbole and holiday fun.

“The story I tell changes a little bit year to year, and it’s just a fun thing to do,” Doll said. “It’s basically about the community.”

He added, “The mayor is getting ready to put bleachers in the streets to accommodate all the people, and we had no idea when we started this how big it would become and it’s really great.”

Kings Park resident Chris Gentry, 10, threw the switch, just as he has for the last four years. Doll first pulled him from the crowd after spotting him as a perfect lookalike for “A Christmas Story” character Ralphie, who was played by actor Peter Billingsly in the film.

“I light the lamp and everybody smiles because it’s become a tradition and it’s the start of the holiday season,” Gentry said. “I just love coming here and doing it for the town.”

Ting in Huntington is more than what meets the eye. It’s a discovery of culture and cuisine.

Operating out of 92 E. Main St. since 2012, it serves traditional Chinese fare as well as Japanese, Thai, and Malaysian inspired dishes that are aesthetically beautiful as well as delicious.

Owner Yu Mei Zheng established Ting as a reminder of a place from her childhood in China where a ting is an architectural structure in which anyone could stop, relax and enjoy the view.

“Growing up, I used to see my grandfather sitting under a ting chatting with family members and neighbors on my walks back home from school,” she said.

That sentiment can be felt when diners are brought to their table. The rich, warm colors of red and brown on the walls and the furniture gives the diner a warm, cosy feeling, in anticipation of what lies ahead.

The journey to Ting starts with appetizers like salmon shooters ($16), seafood ceviche ($13), beef negamaki ($11) and crispy soft

shell crab ($13). The salmon shooters are made with Alaskan King Crab wrapped in salmon with jalapeno, bonito seasoning and ponzu jelly. The combined textures of the crab and salmon, the slight kick of jalapeno inside the salmon and the slightly salty and citrus flavor of the ponzu jelly results in a complex sushi dish that can satisfy any sushi lover.

The seafood ceviche is comprised of scallops, lobster, octopus and white fish, with peppers, onions and lemon-lime vinaigrette. While the ceviche may seem a bit much, the vinaigrette makes is quite refreshing and light to eat. Served in a backlit balloon wine glass, it is has a delightful presentation and an excellent combination of seafood.

The beef negimaki, which is rolled with scallion, is tender and served.

The teriyaki sauce elevates the flavor of the beef. The soft shell crab is crispy, so one can taste the different herbs that highlight its flavor.

For another side dish, try the pineapple fried rice ($13) with the choice of chicken, beef, shrimp or pork. It has ingredients unlike anything might expect from fried rice.

It is served inside an actual pineapple and includes raisins, cashews, onions, scallions, tomatoes and egg.

For diners with dietary restrictions, their dishes have no MSG, contain low sodium soy and offer gluten-free options.

For dessert, the fried tempura ice cream ($9) is a must. The outer shell is crispy and, once you pierce the outer shell, you are greeted with the creamy goodness of either green tea or vanilla ice cream.

Café Revue, which will be operated by Babylon-based Raquette River Baking Co., is planned to offer an expanded menu when compared to that of the Cook’s menu, which was mostly a spot for coffee, said Richard Klein, Book Revue owner. In just a year’s time, the Berghoff family went from Northport Village newcomers to Christmas tree lighters.

The family, made up of dad Justin, mom Bethany and young daughters Greta and Sutton, moved into their Washington Place home just outside of Northport Village last November, but on Friday night they found themselves flipping the switch that turned on the lights of Northport Village Park’s Christmas tree, part of an

annual ceremony that draws thousands.

But it was a different tree that got the Berghoffs into the situation.

Two weeks earlier the Berghoffs removed from their yard a large pine tree that was impeding on their home and donated it to the village.

That tree was put up next to Northport Harbor on a patch of grass just before the southwestern foot of Main Street and next to one of Northport’s municipal parking lots.

“It was really big and overgrown in our front yard,” Justin said. “It was getting really close to the house.”

“So our neighbor told us it would make a great village Christmas tree,” Bethany said. The couple agreed and decided to donate.

One interesting fact, the couple said, is that the now-gigantic tree was once a small table-top Christmas tree that was planted in the yard by a previous owner more than 30 years ago.

“I thought it was kind of nice that this will always be a Christmas tree,” Bethany said.

Northport Village’s annual tree lighting ceremony was hosted by

the Northport Chamber of Commerce and also featured live reindeer, DJ Thommy Bruno, free hot chocolate and cookies courtesy of Shipwreck Diner, Copenhagen Bakery and Northport Feed & Grain and caroling by the Northport Chorale.

The Northport Volunteer Fire Department also helped deliver Santa and Mrs. Claus, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, the Grinch and other holiday-time icons to a crowd of hundreds that accepted candy canes with smiles.

For the sixth straight year, the Huntington Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting coincided with downtown shopping promotion started by American Express called Small Business Saturday. The goal: to drive holiday shoppers to local stores and restaurants.

This year, Huntington village merchants say the results were mixed.

On the positive side, Bon Bons Chocolatier at 319 Main St., co-owner Mary Alice Meinersman said she had expected the rain to put a damper on business, but traffic to the chocolatier and gift shop was “very busy,” with many new faces coming in.

Karen Durka, owner of Fetch Shop at 44C Gerard St., said the pet store, which opened in July, hosted a party at the store from 5-10 p.m., “had an amazing turnout” that produced

Having the opposite experience with her business was Laurie Burlison, owner of Lot 356 Fashion Boutique at 356 New York Ave, which opened in March.

“For Black Friday, we had a much better turnout, but Saturday, there wasn’t much as far as anything that went on and the town was quiet,” Burlison said.

“The town had good intentions having kids walk around and getting candy and stuff, but we didn’t see any turn out from that at all,” Burlison said, adding she thought there should be more advertising for the event next year.

Danielle Brennan, manager of boutique shop Madison’s Niche at 14 Wall St., said Saturday was busy, “maybe not as much as last year, but maybe the weather had something to do with that.”

At Sedoni Gallery, a lifestyle store at 304 New York Ave., owner Leslie Salant said sales for the Saturday after Thanksgiving were the worst they’ve been in her 23 years in business.

“Foot traffic was very off,” she said, and she didn’t blame it on the rain. Rather, she thinks event organizers could have done a better job of asking retailers for their input.

But Huntington spokesman A.J. Carter said “the town and the partners in the parade made a significant effort to engage with retailers early on in the process,” noting a Sept. 28 meeting at the Paramount at which the town demonstrated a new interactive map, communications through the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce and personal outreach by members of the parade committee.

BUSINESS Avoiding IRA Rollover Mistakes, Part 3

This week, we get into a bit more of the smaller but more complex mistakes that, if not addressed, can cost a lot in taxes and penalties.

Missing a net unrealized appreciated opportunity – If you work for a company and they offer shares of their stock in your IRA, this is for you. By taking advantage of net unrealized appreciation rules, it may be possible to significantly decrease the taxes owed on highly appreciated company stock held in the company-sponsored retirement plan.

NUA can allow you to remove all or some of your company stock when you roll over your plan to an IRA. How does NUA work? Your company stock is deposited into a taxable (non-IRA), and your remaining 401(k) assets are transferred into an IRA. You pay taxes on the stock based on its original cost. The tax owed on the difference is paid when

you sell your shares. Again, work with a competent certified financial planner to determine if you can take advantage of this complex strategy.

If you can, it can save you a lot in taxes. It you leave the stock in the IRA, when you sell and distribute monies you will be paying ordinary taxes at your current rate which can be significantly higher than by taking advantage of NUA. Naming a trust rather than a spouse as primary beneficiary – If, like many owners, you have a living or grantor trust, you can name it as the beneficiary of your IRA. But if you have a surviving spouse, that may not result in optimal distribution options.

Here’s why: The death distribution rules for trust beneficiaries are much more restrictive than those for spouse beneficiaries. A spouse beneficiary can move the IRA assets in-

to her or his own personal IRA – and then can name his or her own beneficiaries – including naming a trust.

As your IRA’s beneficiary, your spouse can choose to move the IRA assets into an inherited IRA and take death distributions base on their own life expectancy – an option that may not be available to a trust beneficiary.

Once more, a complicated decision to make without proper guidance.

Mishandling transfers of inherited IRAs to non-spousal beneficiaries – Many people mistakenly assume that the 60-day rule for rollovers applied to non-spousal beneficiaries of IRAs. In fact, if you are a non-spousal beneficiary, your taking receipt of IRA assets incurs as immediate taxable distribution. If you intend to transfer the IRA assets directly to an inherited IRA at another institution, you must do so in the form of a direct trustee-to-

trustee transfer. There are also IRS rules that allow non-spousal beneficiaries to stretch out the required minimum distributions over a much longer period of time than the previous five-year maximum after death of the IRA owner. This means that if you are a non-spousal beneficiary, you can inherit IRA assets and receive RMDs based on your own life expectancy.

To make sure you don’t incur unnecessary taxes and to determine if stretching an inherited IRA would be advantageous to you, contact a qualified CFP before you transfer any assets you inherit.

The Holiday Hijack Scavenger Hunt Return Someone kidnapped Santa and it’s up to the Young Professionals to find him! The Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce will host a Holiday Hijack Scavenger Hunt for Young Professionals on Dec. 15 in Huntington village. Participants do not have to be members of the Huntington Chamber; the age group is 2135.

Teams report to chamber headquarters at 164 Main St. between 5 and 6 p.m. to look at the lineup of elf suspects, pick who they think is the culprit and venture into the village to find where Santa is hidden. The clues will lead each team to several venues around the village, where participants will engage in various activities to retrieve a clue and pro-

ceed to the next location.

The Holiday Hijack encourages team building and offers young professionals a fun opportunity to meet and engage with their local community. The chamber will also collect gift cards to be donated to teenage patients at the Guardian Brain Foundation.

In the end, teams will congregate at one final venue where their Young Professionals monthly Business Blender will be held and prizes distributed.

At the final location, members are encouraged to eat, drink and be merry until 10 p.m.

Chabad Holds Menorah-Building Event The Chabad of Huntington Village put on its first-ever menorah-building workshop at The Home Depot in Huntington on Nov. 22, drawing about 150 participants.

The Home Depot provided the necessary materials to build the menorahs, including wood, glue and paint, said Rabbi Yaakov Raskin, co-director of the Chabad.

Raskin said that while the event was mainly aimed at children and their parents, there were even some adults who came alone to build menorahs, which are special candelabras that can hold nine candles: one for each night of Hanukkah, and a special candle called the shamash, which is Hebrew for “servant,” that lights the others.

One of the reasons that the Chabad put on this event, Raskin said, is to show the difference in value between using a menorah that someone created with their own hands versus using one bought from the store.

“Hopefully, the lights on the menorah should bring light and peace to everyone this holiday,” Raskin said.

By merging an emerging supporting class with a returning “core four” of seasoned leaders, this year’s High School West boys basketball team is primed to be one of the best on Long Island.

But head coach Bill Mitaritonna said there’s still work to do if the Colts want to match and perhaps exceed the success Hills West had a season ago, when it reached Suffolk’s championship game.

“When it comes down to it, you need smart, really athletic teams to go upstate” and compete for a state championship, Mitaritonna said Friday. “This year’s team has a good basketball IQ, they’re very unselfish, but I think the one thing they need to understand is how to use their athleticism and at what points in the game.

“We’re teaching them that you don’t have to go 100 miles per hour all of the time, you can be shifty with it.”

Mitaritonna and his coaching staff want the Colts to use their athleticism to force turnovers that can be converted into fast break points, all while limiting offensive turnovers of their own.

That begins with what Mitaritonna called Hills West’s “core four”: Richard Altenord, Kian Dalyrimple, Cameron Jordan and Deven Williams. They make up a group that’s played together at the varsity for the last three years and has competed in more than 20 games each. “I think the sky is the limit for them,” Mitaritonna said.

Altenord, a 6-foot-4 senior, returns as Hills West’s point guard a year after averaging 13.9 points per game. He is expected to be one of the Colts’ vocal leaders both on and off the court.

Flanking Altenord on the wings will be Williams, a ball-handling guard, and Dalyrimple, a sharpshooter who Mitaritonna expects to lead the Colts in scoring. Both are seniors The fourth member of the core is Jordan, a 6-foot-5 forward.

Mitaritonna praised Jordan’s athleticism, which he said improved during the off-season, and said he expects Jordan to play a major role on this year’s team.

“I want Cam to be in the game as much as possible,” Mitaritonna said, comparing Jordan to a pair of Hills West alums in Tobias Harris, a current NBA player, and Tavon Sledge, a former Division I collegiate basketball player.

Rounding out the Colts’ starting five is expected to be 6-foot-5 junior Jovahn Williamson, who enters his second season at the varsity level. “He’s a very athletic, big man who can block shots and rebound,” Mitaritonna said of the forward, who also runs track.

Supporting the starters will be returning players Zachary Murciano, Gabriel Satterwhite and Jake Willinger, all seniors.

Murciano is a 6-foot guard, Satterwhite is a 6-foot-4 forward and Willinger is a 6-foot-2 guard who Mitaritonna said has “always been a long-range shooter, but now he’s expanded his dribble series to be able to go to the basket.”

There are also newcomers to the varsity program in Matt Asenjo, a junior guard; Chase McGuire, a junior guard; Thomas Raneri, a senior forward; Jeff Terry, a sophomore forward; and Jackson Weisbrot, a junior guard.

The Colts are set to begin their League IV season Dec. 15 at 5:45 p.m. when they travel to Hauppauge. Hills West joins League IV after spending last season in League III. Other league opponents for the Colts will include Deer Park, Bellport, East Islip and West Babylon, all of which made the playoffs last year.

They might be young and small, but head girls basketball coach Adam Cirnigliaro is hopeful his Thunderbirds can remain a playoff force by causing matchup problems for other teams and utilizing one of the league’s best players.

Cirnigliaro expects the Thunderbirds to play small this season with a starting lineup consisting of only guards. They include freshman Sophia Tawil, sophomores Jessie Maurer, Alexa Wallace and Jessica Womble and senior Mesha Rivers.

“I think other teams are going to have matchup problems with us if they try to play some traditional forwards,” he said Friday, adding that the Thunderbirds are hoping to get out in transition and utilize their sharpshooters in Wallace and Maurer, who made 27 three-pointers

last year.

Anchoring the group is Rivers, who the coach called “one of the best players in the league.” Rivers averaged 7.3 points per game last season and is a “a very good ballhandler who gets to the rack really well… and is a tremendous on-theball defender.”

The senior played Oct. 17 in the sixth-annual Alzheimer’s All-Star Basketball Classic, a charity competition meant to showcase some of the best players in Suffolk and Nassau.

Rivers was one of 14 Suffolk players selected to participate in the game.

Rivers also spent time during the off-season developing her outside shot, Cirnigliaro said, which could help raise her total number of threepointers made and make her “much more difficult to guard.”

As for Hills East’s supporting cast, seniors Jessica Mersand and Rachel Silverman are the only other Thunderbirds to return from last

year’s team, which was eliminated from Suffolk’s playoffs in the first round.

Newcomers to the team are juniors Tasheka McCalla, Julia Picarella, Kelsea Picarella and Julia Pascarella; sophomore Emma Schleimer; and freshmen Amadi Williams and McKayla Jones. Cirnigliaro said he expects Jones, a 5-foot-5 guard, to “contribute a lot this year” as a “great defender.”

The Thunderbirds remain in League II for the upcoming season, which begins Dec. 15 with a home game against Bay Shore scheduled for 6 p.m.

In league play, the Thunderbirds will also see playoff teams from a year ago in Northport, Walt Whitman and Copiague, which moved into League II this season.

Hills East will also meet Connetquot, Lindenhurst and Central Islip.

This year’s Eglevsky’s production of “The Nutcracker” will feature new choreography by Maurice Brandon Curry, the company’s executive artistic director.

Curry said in a press release that he wanted to explore deeper into the characters of Clara and Drosselmeyer, while “enriching the production with more theatricality and many new dramatic elements.”

“In September, they had an audition at Eglevsky Ballet School in Bethpage and she didn’t audition for a specific role she just went in for the audition and the artistic director chose her for the role of Clara,” Gavilla said.

“I was shocked because we didn’t know if he wanted an younger Clara or if he wanted an older Clara,” Sarah said about landing the role. “Then a week later, the cast list got posted and I got the role for Clara. I was very excited about that.”

With the role sealed, Sarah is look-

ing forward to performing a pas de deux, which in French translates into “step of two.” Sarah will be partnering with 15-year-old Matthew Herman, of Syosset, who is portraying the Nutcracker Prince.

“I’m doing partnering with the prince this year, which I’ve never performed partnering on stage before,” Sarah said, adding that she’s excited to perform the more difficult choreography as well.

“Overall, I’m really excited and I hope that everything goes well,” Sarah said. “I know that this is going to be a great performance.”

In years to come, Sarah hopes to pursue ballet as a profession, noting that her lifelong dream is to be part of the New York City Ballet.

“It’s been amazing [and] the things that I’ve gotten to do are incredible,” Sarah said, regarding her ballet career. “I’m just really happy that I’ve gotten this far.”
