The first snowstorm of the winter season dumped nearly 2 feet of snow in Dix Hills and around 1 foot of snow in Melville this weekend, leaving residents, business owners and government officials to shovel and plow out for hours on end. Unofficial National Weather Service figures showed that the weekend snowstorm brought 21 inches to Dix Hills and around 1115 inches in Melville. In nearby Commack, a whopping 26.5 inches of snow fell, which appears to be the highest snowfall total reported in the Town of Huntington. As it did for many, the storm left Dix Hills residents David Hoff and David Torres shoveling

for most of the day on Sunday. At around 2 p.m., the pair said they had been shoveling for six hours straight, a “rough start” to the morning, said Hoff, 52. Torres, 21, estimated that it would take another six hours for the pair to clear the snow from their home on Melrose Road near Half Hollow Hills High School West. High School West, along with the district’s other schools, operated Monday on a delayed opening. In Melville, businesses battled the snowfall well after the blizzard ended. Neil Gordon, head pharmacist of 110 Pharmacy & Surgical at 459 Walt Whitman Road, said the blizzard shut down the pharmacy on Saturday, but it was open by 9:15
