A New York Department of Transportation representative said Monday that the department is not currently planning to beef up security at Republic Airport days after Suffolk police said a Wheatley Heights man led them on a chase that culminated with him driving onto the runway.

Suffolk police said Kroy Moore, 34, drove his 2015 Volkswagen Jetta through a red light on Mount Avenue in Wyandanch at around 1:35 a.m. on Saturday. A First Precinct patrol officer tried to pull over the vehicle, police said, but Moore didn’t stop and was pursued for a short while longer.

About a minute later, the car was

seen by a different First Precinct officer on New Highway in Farmingdale, police said. Moore then drove through a fence at Republic Airport, police said, and onto the runway. He continued to drive through the airport until his vehicle became “inoperable,” police said in a statement, and the man took off on foot until he was apprehended by police.

Moore was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and alcohol, criminal trespass, false personation, criminal mischief and unlawful fleeing of a police officer. He was held overnight at the First Precinct, and arraigned on Sunday.

Bond was set at $1,000, with cash bail at $500, which was not posted, according to court records.

In response to the incident Nicole Jones, acting as the DOT’s public

information officer, said “at this moment, we don’t have any further information.” She said there were currently no planned security increases for the airport.

In an emailed statement, State Assemblyman (R-South Huntington) said that the “isolated” incident could serve to “the critical importance of ensuring that hubs of mass transportation are secure from outside intrusions, accidental or otherwise.”

He added, “I will continue to work closely with my colleagues and New York State DOT officials to ensure that we continue to seek and discover new, innovative solutions that will bolster the security of mass transit throughout New York State."

The Half Hollow Hills school board accepted last week a donation from Selden-based Long Island Boys of Summer Baseball League to renovate the varsity baseball field at High School West.

“We’ve used Hills West varsity baseball field in the past,” Gregg Sarra Jr., president of the league, said in an email. “The head coach, Tom Migliozzi, said the field is in terrible shape and asked if we could help out.”

Sarra said the league will supply the materials for the renovation, which will include revamping the irrigation system in the infield. The (Continued to page A00)

The Melville Fire Department recently mourned the loss of ex-Captain Robert Earley Sr., 88, a dedicated and well-respected member of the department for 53 years who passed away on Jan. 29, 2016.

Town Appoints Two To Ethics Board The Huntington Town Board, at its Feb. 10 meeting, appointed two members to the town’s Board of Ethics, bringing the board up to its full complement of five members.

Huntington resident Sam Miller, a longtime official with the New York regional office of the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Sheryl Randazzo, an attorney who lives in Northport and practices in Huntington, were appointed to the board.

Miller and Randazzo join Louis C. England, Ralph W. Crafa and Edward William Billia on the ethics board Miller’s term runs until Dec. 31, 2017 and Randazzo’s until Dec. 31, 2018.

“I welcome these two distinguished Huntington residents to the Ethics Board and thank them for their willingness to serve,” Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone said. “I look forward to their efforts in implementing the provisions of the town’s new ethics code.”

In other action, the town board: • Set a March 8 public hearing on revisions to the town’s yearold rental registration law, clarifying certain provisions and strengthening the ability of the town to prosecute those who violate the provisions of the law.

• Set a March 8 public hearing on a proposal to exclude bistros – a category of food service establishment created in a recent amendment to town code – from Huntington village, and the town’s other hamlet centers.

• Scheduled a March 8 public hearing on a proposal to classify Wall Street between Main and Gerard Streets in Huntington village as a primary zone for metered onstreet parking. Also scheduled was a public hearing to change the fine structure for parking violations to set the fine at $25 for all offenses.

Currently, first, second and third offenses have different fines.

Next month’s town board meeting is slated for 2 p.m. on March 8.

Police said the woman was also charged for firstdegree operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs, having no license and fifthdegree criminal possession of marijuana.

Make Heart-Healthy Decisions DEAR EDITOR: In recognition of February being American Heart Health Month and the 13th anniversary of National Wear Red Day, I was joined Feb. 5 by the American Heart Association to encourage communities, health professionals and families to work together to make heart healthy decisions.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States and one of every four deaths

are caused by heart disease.

Although progress has been made to reduce deaths due to heart attacks, efforts to educate and raise awareness must continue to dispel many of the common dangerous myths surrounding heart disease.

As a disease predominantly attributed to men, it is imperative that we talk about the devastating impacts it has on women. Heart Disease kills more women every year than any other disease, but the good news is that it can be prevented 80% of the time through healthy choices.

PD: Mangano Victim Of Social Media Impersonation

Nassau Executive Edward Mangano Nassau police reported the details of an unusual incident they say occurred on Feb. 4, 2016 when Nassau Executive Edward Mangano was allegedly the victim of social media

impersonation attempts.

According to police, Mangano became aware of the spoofing attack after his staff received information from Karin Caro, a public relations consultant, who also reported being victimized by the spoof.

CBS New York provided police with a document from an anonymous source in what appears to be a cut and paste of a text from an “Ed M.” and tweet from Karin Caro, which she denies ever sending. Both parties said they have no record of such text or tweet and police reviewed its social media monitor, which routinely monitors the county executive’s account, and also has no such record of any tweet. In addition, Karin Caro has stated that she never had such communication with Mangano, nor does she have his cell phone number.

Police said the department’s Intelligence Unit, in coordination with the Electronics Squad, is actively investigating this matter.

Mary Caulfield values the Irish theater for its ability to entertain, but is also fascinated by its ability to catalyze political change.

“Ireland was able to use something I loved so much as a political tool to help inspire and gain independence,” said Caulfield, of Northport.

The fascination has served as the basis for her to infuse her own stage acting with a rigorous academic background, which focuses on Irish theater and its historical context, and has landed her a job as an assistant English professor at Farmingdale State College.

The professorship comes after 20 years of experiences that have taken to Ireland and its surrounding areas; through studies of critical academic work; theater stints Off-Off Broadway, Off-Broadway; and even a gig on popular television show “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

“She has quite an interesting background in the Irish theater, which she has translated into an acting career on the Island,” said Peter Crescenti, media relations manager for Farmingdale State College.

The love for Irish theater was instilled in Caulfield by her late father, Jack, who passed away when she was 18 years old.

“He made Irish music and Irish culture a part of our lives,” she said.

Caulfield appreciated that the Irish people “saw theater as a means to celebrate their culture and history.”

Born and raised in East Northport, she moved to Northport Village when she was 18. After father died, she first cultivated her love of acting as “Maria” in Northport High School’s production of “West Side Story.”

In 1996, Caulfield left for Syracuse University to study theater. Stoking the fire of her love for the Irish theater, she backpacked across Ireland for spring break. She visited places in Ireland like Galway, Connemara, Westport, Mayo, Dublin, Cork and Belfast.

“That was my Irish-American roots and really finding a love of that music,” said Caulfield. “A lot of

While she was there, she made an effort to visit the locations referred to in the music that she loved, including from contemporary Irish rock band, The Saw Doctors, whose songs include the “N17,” “Green and Red of Mayo” and “Clare Island.”

After returning her trip and graduating from Syracuse in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in drama, she moved to Manhattan where she settled into an apartment in the village on 1st Avenue and 10th Street. She worked on Off-Off-Broadway productions, eventually transitioning to Off-Broadway.

She also worked on the set of “Law & Order: SVU” as a production assistant from 2002-2004. She called the work “grueling,” but rewarding.

“They were a great New York cast of characters,” she said. “There were times when I had to be up at 4 a.m. and sit in the rain for 12 hours, but it was a lot of fun to see the business from the other side.”

Caulfield appeared on the show as a backup for NYPD Detective Odafin Tutuola, who is portrayed by rapper and actor Ice-T. Caulfield said

she was very excited to work with the artist.

“You wouldn’t know it to look at me, but I’m a big fan of breakdancing and hip-hop,” she said.

She also once played the humble role of a dead body found in a garbage can. The appearances helped her secure membership in the Screen Actors Guild.

Caulfield next sought to acquire her Master of Arts degree in theater and performance studies at New York University through the Gallatin School of Individualized Study where she designed her own academic track. Fusing the performance studies aspect from NYU’s Tisch School and Irish studies from the university’s Glucksman Ireland House, she completed her degree in 2004.

Two years later, she moved to Ireland and earned her doctorate in theatre literature and history and criticism from Trinity College in 2011.

Caulfield said she fully immersed herself in Irish culture at this time.

“I realized that I liked being a student, I liked the study of theater, and not just acting the craft, but looking at theater texts… the historical context of it,” she said.

Recently, Caulfield played Desdemona in Othello for the Summer Shakespeare series at Arena Players Repertory Theatre Company, a Centerport-based theater troupe. She has also played Maureen Folan in the Beauty Queen of Leenane, which takes place in Connemara, another location in Ireland.

Frederic De Feis, founder and producer of Arena Players, noted that the plays Caulfield has acted in have garnered rave reviews. He added that she brings intelligence and “emotional receptivity” to her work.

In the theater’s latest production, “Toyer,” a tale of a serial killer who paralyzes his victims by turning them into living dolls by severing their brain stems, Caulfield plays the lead psychiatrist.

De Feis said that Caulfield brings “a lot of understanding of psychiatric problems… she uses intelligence and psychology” in her role.

Off-stage, Caulfield enjoys sailing, golfing and animal rescue. She has two “misfit dogs with three eyes between them.”

She’s married to Matthew DeBlasi, another Northport resident, whom she has known since they were 11 years old.

As a Northport native, Caulfield has also committed to the nautical life by working at Seymour’s Boatyard for the past 20 years.

General Manager of the boatyard Dave Weber Jr. said that Caulfield, 37, started working at the gas dock, selling fuel to boaters. A year after that, she became a launch operator, transporting customers to their boats and back to the main dock.

He recalled a time about 10 years ago when the seas were especially stormy. She had to transport 20 boaters back to the dock. Because the water was so rough, she was forced to transport them safely to the gas dock.

While he might have expected a rough landing, Weber said that Caulfield skillfully brought them back “like an everyday Sunday.

“You could probably put her in any situation. She’s very adaptive. I can’t say it enough, but our customers love her.”

Half Step Injects New Life Into Grateful Dead SPOTLIGHT

Founded in 2004 by Long Island-based rhythm guitarist and vocalist Scott Bardolf, Half Step celebrate the music of the Grateful Dead.

Just like the iconic American rock outfit of yesteryear, Half Step hoist the flag of musical diversity by fusing rock elements with country, folk, reggae and psychedelic music into an eclectic mix worthy of any true deadhead fan.

Half Step will bring that show to Huntington village’s Paramount on Feb. 26.

Asked to join the tribute band six years ago, lead guitarist and vocalist Tom San Filippo, 49, sought to elevate Half Step from their garageband standing into a powerhouse act, churning out Grateful Dead tunes with the same level of depth and intensity that the late Grateful Dead singer Jerry Garcia was widely known and respected for. “[Bardolf] founded it early on with really no expectations of it going anywhere other than the base-

He added, “And it’s come a long way, we’ve really gotten the people that looked at it as a hobby to take it more seriously to where it can al-

The band has continued to evolve since its first year with different members lending their musical chops to recreating the Grateful Dead live experience.

While band members have come and gone, the band’s lead guitarist stressed that everyone involved is a “lifelong Dead fan” and they all ap-

proach the music from a “very deep level” that seems to always give a fresh take to the Grateful Dead’s classic sound.

To capture that original sound, the band painstakingly seeks out the same instruments, amps and vintage gear that the Grateful Dead were known for using in an effort to expand their musical toolbox and properly pay homage to one of rock history’s greats, according to San Filippo.

With the Grateful Dead just now celebrating their 50th anniversary, it formed in 1965, Half Step’s band members proudly carry the torch and are thrilled to play for deadhead fans, and first time listeners alike.

“It’s always a fulfilling thing for us to perform this music of the Grateful Dead,” San Filippo said.

“Because of the depth of their catalogue, and just the way they perform, it really feels like we’re approaching it with a brand new take every time.”

The Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington is preparing to launch the inaugural spring season of the Cinema Arts Preview Club, which will allow members the opportunity to watch and critique films before they’re publicly available.

But, there’s a catch. Club members won’t know what they’ll be watching until they get to the theater.

“You don’t really know what you’re walking into,” said Raj Tawney, the cinema’s director of publicity and promotions. “There’s this feeling of excitement and anticipation that you’re going to go see something that you haven’t seen and nobody else has seen... and you come in with no bias or opinion.”

The program is anticipated to show new indie and international films, which will be curated by David Schwartz, a former Huntington resident, and chief curator at the

Queens-based Museum of the Moving Image.

“You’re literally trusting one person to bring you a film that he feels is worthy to show you, so I think that’s why it’s very exciting,” Tawney said, adding that Schwartz got his first job at the Cinema Arts Centre. “He’s done [the program] elsewhere and it’s been wildly successful.”

At the end of each film, the audience will get to fill out review cards, participate in surveys and have open discussions about the film. Schwartz will mold the series based on response.

“The cool thing is that it’s kind of interactive,” Tawney said. “We always include them in the conversation, we make them feel like it’s more than just seeing a movie you feel like you’re having a greater experience here.”

A special guest involved with the film, whether it’s a producer or an actor, will be at each screening. The first showing will be on March 16. After

New Look, Menu At Mill Pond House

Mill Pond House of Centerport has been serving American-inspired dishes since 2003, but the longstanding restaurant was closed for businesses as of late as it underwent major renovations to both its look, and its menu.

Under the helm of owner Dean Philippis, Mill Pond’s new look is sure to draw diners through the doors.

“After being the owner of Mill Pond for thirteen years, I wanted to give back to my diners by updating Mill Pond House’s look to give them an even better dining experience than before,” Philippis said. “I wanted to create an American seafood house where my customers can enjoy the revamped culinary creations as well as the water view.”

Walking in, the first thing diners will notice is a long bar and a dining area with a table that could be used communally or to accommodate a party of eight. The light colored walls, wooden tables and chairs with blue and white seat covers are a contrast to the dark wood and colors that

used to envelope the restaurant.

Another thing that will draw diners is the radiant heating that extends from the indoor dining area to the enclosed outdoor patio, giving diners the opportunity to enjoy the water view year round.

The new changes create an urban vibe that accentuate the elegant setting.

Going along with the new atmosphere is an eclectic menu prepared

by Chef Richard Soriano that complements the diner’s view.

Appetizers like duck fries ($13) and volcano roll ($17) may not be usual starters for every diner, but should still be tried.

For diners that love french fries, the duck fries will surely delight the taste buds. Made with pulled duck confit, aged cheddar and crispy crumble duck gravy, the crispy fries are on another level.

Sushi Chef Sammy’s volcano roll is made with inside out tuna, salmon, yellowtail and cucumber tempura crunch, topped with spicy mayo and kabayaki sauce. The freshness of the sushi, combined with the tempura crunch, and spiciness of the sauce, is perfect for any sushi lover.

A special with limited availability, Mill Pond House’s jumbo shrimp scampi with risotto is a seafood lover’s entree.

The shrimp is tender, and risotto is creamy, but not too rich. In addition, generous portions of lobster meat are incorporated in the dish, resulting in a filling dish for seafood lovers.

The crispy skin and soft texture of duck meat, topped with a slightly sweet glaze creates a richly flavoured dish.

As for dessert, the one to choose is the warm apple crisp a la mode ($9).

The pastry is light and the pieces of apple combined with the Tahitian vanilla gelato are filling so it’s the perfect dessert on a cold night.

Diners that want to pair the apple crisp with a hot drink should go no further than the Belgian coffee drink, which is made with Godiva chocolate, and is creamy and decadent.

The Young Professionals Chamber of Commerce, a program of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, recently hosted its 13th annual Business Leadership Competition at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. This year over 350 students from 16 local high schools demonstrated their business savvy through presentations in 11 categories. Winners announced at a reception at St. Joseph’s, were invited to attend an awards ceremony at Huntington Elks Club, along with their parents, teachers, and judges.

Sixteen schools participated in the competition. Commack, Connetquot, Farmingdale, Garden City, Half Hollow Hills East, Half Hollow Hills West, Harborfields, Kings Park, Milliken Technical Center, Northport, Oyster Bay, St. Dominic’s, Syosset, Walt Whitman, Wantagh and BOCES’ Wilson Tech Center all sent teams.

The YPCC was established to engage high school students, college students and young entrepreneurs to enhance their leadership skills in a professional environment interacting with business executives, community leaders, educators and other young adults. Through this school-business partnership through the Huntington Chamber, educational initiatives are offered to the dynamic students who are our future business leaders of tomorrow.

Barbara Wanamaker said she had a bit of a rough start when she entered the real estate industry in 1979.

“I didn’t understand this business for nothing, and I would get home at night and I would just start crying. I was so upset,” Wanamaker said.

But that changed when she landed her first listing.

“I was hooked because there’s a real rush and once you get hooked on that, it’s hard to let go of it,” she said.

“You want to make it happen.”

Now, Wanamaker, 73, of Huntington, is the associate real estate broker and owner of Prime Properties in Huntington, which she opened in December 2014.

“I wanted to create an office where it’s locally focused and locally owned,” she said. “It’s all about making it a wonderful experience for buyers and sellers.”

Wanamaker has employed 17 agents so far and, although the company is new, its staff members are not new to the industry.

“My goal here is to have a quality company with educated agents that understand the real-estate business. I want agents that I know are very skilled and also very much like team players,” she said. “When you work in a real estate office, you really become very connected and you work with people who have a lot of give

Wanamaker herself as 36 years of experience, during which she’s sold over 950 homes.

She said the industry can “be traumatic,” but it can also be “fabulous.”

Founded in December 2014, Prime Properties services the entire Town of Huntington, from Commack to Lloyd Neck and Fort Salonga to West Hills.

“One of the things I say when I teach is the only truly predictable thing about real estate is it’s total unpredictability,” she said. “It’s a business that constantly teaches you that you don’t know it all. “That’s kind of the board spectrum because Huntington is such a diversified town that there’s little village houses for $500,000 and then there are mansions down in Huntington Bay for $2 million,” Wanamaker said. “So you get to see a lot of dif-

ferent kinds of houses and get a lot of different kinds of buyers too.”

When showing properties, Wanamaker said it’s important to find a quality home, but accommodating the lives of both the buyer and seller is also key.

“That’s what makes it fun if you like people, and I love working with people. I love helping people solve their problems,” Wanamaker said.

“I’m very fortunate to have found my true love in my business and I know that a lot of people don’t get that opportunity,” she continued. “I love real estate, I’ve always loved it.

Attorneys and staff at Melvillebased elder law firm Genser Dubow Genser & Cona participated in a virtual dementia tour last week in an effort to gain a greater understanding of what some of their clients deal with on a daily basis.

“It’s really important for us that our staff gives our clients the best possible experience when they come in here. So we thought it would be really important for our staff members to understand, and be sensitive to, what people are going through when we’re working with them,” Melissa NegrinWiener, Esq., GDGC partner, said.

Running the tour was Laura Giunta, director of community outreach at the Garden City branch of Senior

Helpers, who is also a certified senior advisor and is certified to perform the virtual dementia tour as a facilitator through Second Wind Dreams, the Georgia-based nonprofit that offers produces the tour.

It “allows someone a window into what it feels like to have regular age impairments, along with dementia, such as macular degeneration, arthritis, neuropathy and confusion, while trying to carry out simple tasks,” Giunta, who has performed the sensitivity training for two years, said. It allows “people to experience what it feels like to do those tasks with the impairment.”

For the tour, 18 GDGC staff members ranging in age from 35-62 were given simple tasks to complete in two minutes while equipped with devices that stimulate certain aspects of de-

Negrin-Wiener said this made her “realize that you may do these things sometimes when you’re dealing with somebody who is suffering from

these different types of ailments and that they really can’t hurry up. They need to focus on one thing at a time.

She teaches you how to communicate with somebody who’s dealing with these obstacles.”

Giunta usually provides the services at assisted livings or rehab facilities, making GDGC the first law firm to participate in the training.

The Colts of High School West took to double overtime the defending Suffolk runner-up Blue Devils on Friday during the opening round of the Class AA girls basketball playoffs, but the Colts ultimately fell 74-67.

Hills West, the 11th-overall seed, played without the county’s leading scorer, Tori Harris, who suffered a broken nose and a concussion in the team’s regular season finale against Eastport-South Manor on Feb. 12.

The Colts were instead led on offense by Samantha Hinke, a sophomore, who scored 22 points; Channiah Baker, a junior, who added 19 points of her own; and Alyse McAlpine, who produced 12 points.

Hills West played Huntington, the sixth-overall seed, tight early as the score knotted was at 18-18 after the first quarter. Hills West did, however, fall behind 36-30 as the buzzer sounded for halftime.

In the third quarter, Huntington extended its lead to 50-41, but the Colts wouldn’t go down easily.

They responded to outscore Huntington by 9 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Hills West

almost walked away with the upset in regulation, but Huntington’s Brooke Baade hit a three-pointer 5.7 seconds left to play to knot the score at 56-56.

The two squads remained deadlocked at 65-65 after the first overtime period. In the second, Huntington outscored the Colts 9-2 to secure the seven-point victory.

Huntington was led by Alex Heuwetter who scored 23 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Baade added 19 points, and Katie Seccafico recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Hills West’s head coach, Bryan Dugan, said his team “played extremely tough and competed to the last second against a good opponent in Huntington.

“Channiah Baker played her best game of the season, as did Samantha Hinke. Joi Wilson, Alyse McAlpine and Samantha Pierre-Louis all played inspired basketball in the absence of Tori.”

The Colts finish the season with an overall record of 11-7. They were runners-up in Suffolk’s League IV this season, one year after the program ended the season with a record of 3-15.

“As a team - we accomplished one of our goals by making the playoffs - and will look to build off of the success of this season into next season,” Dugan said.

Hills East’s boys basketball team defeated West Babylon 72-55 on Feb. 11 in a play-in game for Suffolk’s Class AA playoffs, but the Thunderbirds fell 72-60 in the first round on Saturday to Brentwood, Long Island’s defending big-school champion.

Against Brentwood, No. 17 Hills East was led by Savion Lewis who, in his third career playoff game, led all scorers with 30 points.

Brentwood, the top overall seed, was led by the trio of Mike Almonacy, with 26 points; Jamel Allen, with 17 points and 19 rebounds; and Lest Quinones, with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Hills East fell behind Brentwood early as the score was 34-24 at halftime. In the third quarter, Hills East chipped away at Brentwood’s lead to make the score 47-43. The four-point margin was the smallest that Brentwood has led by when entering the fourth quarter against Suffolk

Against No. 16 West Babylon two days earlier, Lewis produced 23 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, to help lead Hills West through the play-in game. Lewis also dished out nine assists.

“He’s unbelievable, he’s going to be a special player,” head coach Peter Basel said of his point guard. “I let him do what he does best, which is driving, probing and finding the open man. And he can finish at the hoop.”

Two of Hills East’s senior captains also scored in the double digits against West Babylon. D’Nathan Knox scored 20 points, and Matt Smith scored 11 points.

The Thunderbirds conclude their season an overall record of 11-9, and fourth-place standing in Suffolk’s League II. Along with Knox and Smith, the Thunderbirds are expected to graduate seniors Joe Branch, Eric Davis, Justin Gardner, Bailey Kaston, Zach Leff and Jake Snitofsky.

Eligible to return next season are sophomores Julien Crittendon, Lewis and Kenny Mathurin; and juniors Reed Bresky, Andrew Connell, Sean Lulley, Kioni Nedd and Zach Schwartz.

Hills East was also coached this season by assistant coach Dave Simon.
