Development of the planned 8acre Sweet Hollow Park in Melville has stalled due to a need for proper soil remediation, Huntington spokesman A.J. Carter said Monday. Development of the park, which is booked for $1.8 million in the town’s 2016 operating budget, is planned to begin toward the end of the year, pending environmental hurdles, Carter said. “We don’t have a firm timetable,” Carter said. The main issue to address, he said, is the potential proliferation of arsenic in the soil at the park. Arsenic, which can be toxic, is commonly present on land used for farming, Carter said. The par-

cel on Old Country Road was once part of Meyer’s Farm. Before proceeding, Carter said, the town is waiting on Suffolk County officials to indicate which standard of acceptable arsenic levels are applicable to the site, either county standards or state standards. Carter said it will take several months for soil analysis to be completed by The LiRo Group, the environmental consulting firm hired by the Huntington. After that, the plan will be finalized. The LiRo Group also did not respond before deadline. “We understand there's environmental issues,” Alissa Taff, president of the Sweet Hollow Civic Association, said Monday. “We’re hoping that the town proceeds as soon as possible. It's

been a 15-year endeavor.” In July 2015, the Huntington Town Board voted to appropriate $1.8 million in the 2016 operating budget toward the project, which was originally approved in 2013 as part of a multi-project deal. The board also voted in September 2015 to authorize appropriation of funds up to $500,000 on an “as-needed basis” that would be transferred from the town’s Open Space Land and Park Improvements Reserve Fund and the Neighborhood Parks Fund for various items in the project, such as an irrigation system, game tables and landscaping. None of the Huntington Town Board members responded to requests for comment before deadline Monday.
