Crash Victim Was ‘Role Model,’ Had ‘Infectious Smile’ Photo/GoFundMe

Friends of Deronne Lawrence, a 19-year-old Wyandanch man who was killed in a car crash in Wheatley Heights on Friday morning, said the teenager was a positive role model in the Wyandanch community.

“He had an infectious smile. He was always a positive role model for the kids,” said Patricia Taylor, who coached Lawrence during his time on the track team at Wyandanch High School before he graduated in 2014. “He would always come back to the school to speak with the kids whenever he was off from college.”

Lawrence died Friday after Suffolk police said he was driving northbound on Straight Path in his 2008 Honda when his vehicle began to veer into the southbound lane and struck a 2013 Jeep at around 6:45 a.m. Lawrence was pronounced dead on scene by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office.

Taylor said on Monday that Lawrence ran in the 100- and 200-meter races for the Wyandanch Warriors, which she said Lawrence considered a “band of brothers.” Taylor also said that Lawrence attended Vaughn College in Brooklyn where he studied aviation. Whenever he came home from college, Taylor said, Lawrence would speak with and advise the younger athletes of his former team.

Matthew Rosa, current captain of the Warriors track team, said he was shocked by the news of Lawrence’s death.

“I tried calling him and the phone wouldn’t answer, and I just kept calling him,” Rosa, a senior, said on Monday. “He was actually more like a brother to me. We always hung out, no matter what we did. He was always happy, a genuine person. He’ll joke with you, he cared about you.”

A GoFundMe page (GoFundMe.com/bkv49c9t) has been created to help cover the costs of a funeral service for Lawrence, which is planned to be at the True Life Church of God in Wyandanch.

First Data To Close Melville Office

First Data Corporation, a credit card processing company, will be closing its Melville branch by the end of 2017, according to a state filing made March 7.

In the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification the company filed with the Department of Labor it specifies that the plant, located at 1307 Walt Whitman Road, will be closing due to “economic” reasons. The filing also notes that there is no union representation or bumping rights (Continued on page A22)

Taxi Drivers Square Off With Uber Long Islander News photo/Chris Mellides

Local taxi drivers are asking Huntington Town Board members to enforce town code and prevent Uber drivers without appropriate licensing from servicing customers within town lines.

Doug Freeman, a manager at Huntington Station-based taxi company Orange & White, presented to the town board on March 7 a total of 60 letters penned by local taxi drivers who allege their livelihoods have been affected by Uber, a smartphone-based app that allows customers to request taxi service from nearby Uber drivers, who use their own cars.

In a March 10 interview, Freeman said Uber drivers have no business in the town since they’re unlicensed.

“They do not have an office in the town. They have no right picking up trips in the town,” he said. Freeman said that if he sees Uber drivers operating at the Huntington Long Island Railroad Station he’ll demand them to leave. “If they give me a hard time, my drivers will back me up.”

A section in Huntington Town Code states that “it shall be unlawful for any person to engage in the business of transportation for hire within the Town of Huntington without first having secured a license from the Town Clerk.”

Karen Svendsen, a Bay Shorebased attorney who has represented Orange & White for 15 years, said on March 16 that her client does not necessarily want to kick Uber drivers out, but it does not want Uber to have an “unfair competitive advantage.” She said Uber drivers are most prominent in Huntington village on “prime” nights, Thursday through Saturday.

“We’re asking for the town to simply enforce the code as they wrote it,” Svendsen said. “We are required very diligently to maintain our licenses” In an email on March 14, Alix Anfang, an Uber spokeswoman in New York, stated, "There is an un-

He said that there is a total of eight licensed taxicab and vehiclesfor-hire businesses in town, five of which do business as “Orange & White.” Carter said there are approximately 144 drivers with permits to drive in the town and 66 vehicles that are approved, he said.

Additionally, code requires owners of companies offering taxicabs or vehicles for hire “must maintain a business office within the Town of Huntington.”

It costs $150 for a business owner’s license from the town, plus $50 for each motor vehicle and $50 for a vehicle operator’s permit.

Failure to adhere to the code can be grounds for a fine and/or imprisonment.

Carter said that the town board is

Despite repeated attempts to contact her on March 16, Anfang did not comment on these sections of the town code before deadline.

Freeman refuted that claim, “They’re not licensed and they don’t have insurance,” he said.

Dominic Banks, a driver with Orange & White for two years, was one of the drivers who wrote to the town board. Banks possesses a commercial driver's license and said he has previously worked as a bus driver for Huntington Coach.

“I think it’s unfair because we put in the work. We paid our dues. We know the town, we know a lot of the people around here,” Banks said.

“They’re not licensed, they don’t take the drug test. We are being watched, we are being managed, as well. And they’re not.”

Town of East Hampton officials last year effectively prevented Uber drivers from operating service within the town by changing town code to require taxi cars be registered with an East Hampton Town address in order to get a license from the town. Officials cited high volumes of traffic as the concern that led to the change. According to reports, Uber has since stopped operating in the Town of East Hampton.

Suffolk police said a 91-year-old Wheatley Heights man crashed his car into a school bus in Dix Hills last Thursday.

Police said the man, whose name was being withheld by police, was driving his 2002 Hyundai Accent northbound on Route 231 when he “failed to stop” at the intersection of Route 231 and Macniece Place at approximately 11:45 a.m. The Hyundai struck the rear of a school bus, which was from the Wyandanch School District and was stopped at the intersection.

The man was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore

where he was treated for a serious head injury and numerous broken bones, police said. Two students and the bus driver were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where they were treated and released. Seventeen additional students that were on the bus, all high-school age, were not injured.

Police said the Hyundai was impounded for a safety check and the school bus was inspected by the Suffolk County Police Department Motor Carrier Safety Section and no infractions were issued.

The Dix Hills Fire Department also responded to the scene, fire officials said. Dix Hills Fire and Rescue personnel were on scene with three ambulances, an engine, heavy

A 21-year-old Deer Park man was arrested on Carlls Straight Path in Dix Hills at around 3 p.m. on March 16 for allegedly possessing a quantity of cocaine. Police charged the man with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Students Honored For ‘Embracing Our Differences’ Each year the Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity and Human Understanding, located on the Suffolk County Community College Selden campus, sponsors an “Embracing Our Differences” art exhibit.

The 2015 curated exhibit included 27 works by professional artists and students on the themes of cultural understanding, appreciation for diversity and peaceful coexistence.

Grace Music School Opens At Steinway & Sons Grace Music School opened a school at the Steinway & Sons piano showroom in Melville. For the last four years, Fort Salongabased Grace Music School has worked to deliver music lessons to students around Suffolk County. The opening of the school’s second location marks the first time a music school has been integrated into a Steinway-owned showroom.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was performed on March 12 by New York State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport), Huntington Councilman Eugene Cook, representatives from Steinway and Sons and

the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce. An open houses is scheduled for April 2 and April 3 to introduce the public to the 505 Walt Whitman Road school and feature free 30-minute trial music lessons as well as door and raffle prizes including a free year’s worth of music lessons, and a six-month free piano rental.

Grace Music School Music Director Grace Heaphy stated, “To be able to open a second music school just four years after opening our school in Fort Salonga, and to have it be at a Steinway showroom, is almost surreal. I feel incredibly honored that the maker of the greatest pianos in the world

has selected us to operate a music school in one of their showrooms.”

The new school in Melville will offer a variety of instrument lessons, and features a performance space where students can showcase their talent. It houses nine lesson studios and will have a comfortable waiting room where parents can wait for their children.

“We want it to have a café kind of feel,” said the school’s owner, John Heaphy. “We want this to be a place where people can come to relax, read a book, and enjoy music. It’s more than just a school, it’s a place where we want to cultivate a sense of community and an appreciation for music.”

Turning The Page On New York’s Past DEAR EDITOR: March is when we turn the page on winter and embark on spring. It is a time of hope and optimism. It is also when important, community impacting decisions are made in Albany. And this March, there is plenty of hope when it comes to ethics reform, making college more affordable for all and making the best investment in our future – through our children.

New York has become infamous for political corruption and betrayal of the pub-

lic’s trust. Last year, we saw two of our state’s most powerful politicians convicted for crimes rooted in personal greed. Year after year, I have put forth proposals that would make the Assembly more open, accountable and transparent. Each year, the Assembly Majority chooses to support the status quo and strike these publicly-supported proposals down.

The Public Officers Accountability Act (A.4617) would enact numerous reforms making the actions and inner workings of the legislature more visible to the public. I also fully support term

limits for legislative leaders as well as stripping pensions from public officials convicted of crimes in relation to their elected office. Stagnant leadership positions lead to abuses of power and personally motivated policies.

Those who abuse their position of power for personal profit don’t deserve a single dollar more from the public they were elected to serve.

The Legislature must eradicate corruption and clean up its toxic environment before it can successfully move forward to serve the people of New York.

As a college professor, I have seen firsthand how higher education can transform a person’s life, and how campuses are a launching pad for innovation and invention. People with the desire and work ethic to pursue a degree should be able to afford that opportunity.

I recently presented my plan for making higher education more affordable. This plan focuses on creating learn-to-work programs where high school students can obtain real world experience while also earning college credits. It also petitions to reform federal law, making the payment and refinancing of student loans more flexible. Affordability is the key to ensuring every student has a fair shot at pursuing a college dream.

Finally, my conference and I are fully focused on completely restoring the education funds withheld from

our children. Over the last five years, the state withheld funding from schools in an effort to pay for spending priorities of the Assembly Majority. Last year we were able to recover $600 million of those funds, and this year our mission is to secure the rest.

Securing these funds will mean our schools can retain talented teachers, equip our classrooms with the needed resources, protect art/music/athletic programs, preserve after-school programs, and give localities more control over their school districts. Our children deserve to attend schools that are full and fairly funded.

Overdose Prevention Seminar Slated For Next Wednesday In an effort to help save lives and combat the Heroin epidemic after officials said 180 Nassau residents died from heroin and prescription painkillers last year, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, state Senator Michael Venditto and state Assemblyman Brian Curran are partnering with the Freeport Memorial Library to host a free Overdose Prevention Seminar on Wednesday, March 30, from 7-9 p.m. at the library, which is located at 144 West Merrick Road.

Residents will learn how to administer Narcan – the lifesaving antidote that can reverse the fatal effects of an Opiate overdose – and, learn the warning signs of drug addiction, treatment options, stories of recovery, and more.

“Through education, awareness enforcement and treatment, my administration and the Heroin Prevention Task Force are diligently combatting heroin and opioid abuse throughout Nassau,” said Mangano. “These free Overdose Prevention Seminars continue to help save lives and keep families whole.”

Narcan has been used by paramedics and emergency room doctors

for decades to save lives. A 2006 state law allows citizens to administer Narcan in an attempt to save a life without fear of liability. Nassau officials said the county has already provided Narcan training for about 6,200 people since 2012. At least two dozen trainees have used that knowledge and the Narcan kit they were provided to revive someone overdosing on heroin or painkillers, and save their lives. Narcan is administered through a nasal spray, and is provided at no charge to trainees over the age of 18.

Social Work and OASAS Continuing Education Credits are available for the training, as the Nassau County Office of Mental Health and Chemical Dependency – and the Mental Health Association of Nassau County – are recognized by the state Education Department's State Board for Social Work as a provider of continuing education for licensed social workers.

Local Singer-Songwriter Climbs Up Musical Ladder

As she swiftly strums her fingers across the strings of her guitar, she nods her head with every note to prepare herself for what’s next. Her short ombre curls sway back and forth as she subtly moves with the music to soak it all in.

Singer-Songwriter Kirsten Maxwell looks down at the chords, closes her eyes and leans into the microphone to begin singing the lyrics to “Crimson,” the title track on her

debut album.

After showcasing her music in several competitions, Maxwell won first place at the Rhode Island Songwriters Association contest in May 2015, and was also named one of three winners at the 2016 South Florida Folk Festival Singer-Songwriter Competition in January.

“The thing that keeps bringing me back is singing live,” Maxwell, 23, of Huntington, said. “Every time I do a show, I’m in front of an audience and I’m engaging with them and singing. It’s great. I’ll do what I have

to do to keep doing that.”

Singing contemporary folk, Maxwell’s soothing sound and illuminating voice is reminiscent of artists like Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. The latter is one of Maxwell’s favorite artists of the 1960s folk scene.

Born Kirsten Freiman, her musical career began when she was 12 years old and wrote her first song, “Sunshine in Your Eyes,” using three chords, C, G and A minor.

“We were staying in New Hampshire for a weekend and I was sitting

by a fireplace with this guitar, those three chords and that’s where I wrote it,” Maxwell said. “I was really excited.”

Maxwell came from a musical family, noting that her brother and uncle are singers, too. Her parents, who are now divorced, met at an opera house when her mother was an opera singer and her father was a conductor and director.

Canadian Pop Star Takes America By Storm SPOTLIGHT

Widely known for her platinumselling breakout single, “Call Me Maybe,” which in 2012 topped the charts at No. 1 in 18 countries, Canadian singer and songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen continues to write and record as she tours the U.S. On Saturday, Jepsen is scheduled to bring her show to The Paramount with supporting act Cardiknox, a New York-based pop rock duo. Jepsen is expected to perform song selections from her latest record “Emotion,” which was released last year.

Driven by her unyielding appreciation for pop music and performing live, the 30-year-old vocalist stirred waves in her native country in 2007 after appearing on season 5 of “Canadian Idol,” a televised reality competition based on the British show “Pop Idol.”

The success of the single put the brakes on the release of “Kiss,” her sophomore LP, and by the time it dropped in 2012, Jepsen was riding

high on the popularity of her successful single.

The singer’s third album, “Emotion,” was met with positive reviews with material that draws a heavy influence from ‘80s pop and rock songs.

The songwriting that went into the album produced over a hundred songs, according to Jepsen, who in a statement expressed her confliction when narrowing the selection down to just a dozen tracks.

In the end, Jepsen says that the payoff for her is putting out music that she loves and connecting with her listeners.

“So much of why I love those ’80s pop songs has to do with their timelessness, and the way you can so easily fit them into your own life,” she said. “As much as all the songs on ‘Emotion’ are personal to me, I really just want everyone to let them be their songs, their emotions.”

She added, “The best feeling to me is that we can all share the same stories, even if we don’t know each other.”

“I didn’t think when I was a kid that I was going to be a singer-songwriter,” Maxwell said. “I definitely figured that out later on.”

After discovering her passion for songwriting, Maxwell consistently wrote songs about her personal experiences.

She said, “There was a high school breakup that happened so I wrote a song about it and I was like, ‘Wow this is powerful stuff that brings healing.’ That was the next level, realizing how powerful it can be and that just made me like it even more so I just kept going.”

Attending the State University of New York at Potsdam for two years, Maxwell took up creative writing.

She majored in the subject when she transferred to the State University of New York at Geneseo.

“I had determined that sing-songwriter was the career path I wanted to pursue so I was super focused on that,” Maxwell said, adding that she wrote songs and went to open mic’s regularly. “Studying creative writing

was great for learning how to use language, tell a story and express yourself through language.”

Having written approximately 100 songs, Maxwell returned home after graduating in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and began compiling a list of songs to create her first album.

“When you’re starting out, you kind of want to imitate other people and there’s nothing wrong with that, but at a certain point while doing that you’re learning about who you are,” Maxwell said. “That’s what’s going to make you stand out is being your unique self because nobody else is you.”

“Crimson,” Maxwell’s debut, 11track album, was released in April 2015, and then saw a national radio release in February.

Following her success at the Rhode Island Songwriters Association contest and the 2016 South Florida Folk Festival Singer-Songwriter Competition, Maxwell said she will be entering more contests and is currently working on an extended play.

Vauxhall Serves Up Burgers, Brooklyn Vibes

Meet Vauxhall, Huntington village’s newest must-dine-at eatery that offers up a little taste of Brooklyn to go alongside its signature burgers, beer selection and rustic atmosphere.

Co-owners and musicians Eric Finneran, Salvatore Mignano and Dan Valentino opened the 26 Clinton Ave. bar and restaurant in December as an extension of their love for music. The name of the eatery is a nod to English rock star Morrissey’s 1994 album, “Vauxhall and I.” Vauxhall is the trio’s newest business venture, coming in addition to The Amityville Music Hall, which they also own, and which is known to promote and support local bands.

When you walk into Vauxhall you feel as though you’ve left Huntington and have been spirited away to a trendy Brooklyn eatery.

Inside you’ll come upon the bar, which occupies the front part of the restaurant, while the rest of the space consists of dark woods, exposed beams and cigar box guitars made by Finneran, creating a rustic feel throughout.

To go along the Brooklyn-esque urban vibe, Chef Mike Meehan has created dishes that will make you want to come back for more.

To help jumpstart your burger bar adventure, try the poutine classique house cut fries ($11), which are crispy and with the cheddar curds, green onions and gravy on top. For an additional $3 you can add to the mix either duck sausage or beef short rib. This appetizer is sure to whet your appetite.

As a prelude to what’s in store, the Vauxhall salad ($9) is pretty substantial and healthy, consisting of baby kale, wild arugula, marcona almonds, chickpeas, dried pears and topped with cider dressing. It’s tasty and filled with various textures from the almonds, chickpeas and dried pears.

Vauxhall’s main attraction is its burgers. The Wild Life burger ($16) will surely impress even the most discerning burger lover. Ordered medium-rare, the burger is juicy and tender. Made with caramelized onions, roasted wild mushrooms and gruyere cheese on a brioche bun, the burger is elevated by the sweetness of the onions, the nuttiness of the wild mushrooms and creaminess of the gruyere cheese.

Vauxhall opened its doors 26 Clinton Ave. in Huntington village last December.

It’s been serving up signature burgers and a Brooklyn-esque vibe ever since.

Elsewhere on the menu, seafood lovers can find the Fish Camp Taco ($12) as a great alternative. The taco is comprised of local flounder, napa cabbage slaw, lemon Sriracha sauce and pico de gallo. The mild, sweet flavor of the flounder, along with the freshness of the pico de gallo and slight kick of the Sriracha sauce creates an entree that’s complex in flavor.

For diners with dietary restrictions, Vauxhall also offers vegan and gluten-free choices like the vegan poutine ($10) as appetizer, and the black bean sweet potato burger ($14) as an entree, just to name a few.

For those with room left for dessert, the must-haves include the Warm Donuts ($5), and the vegan Fresh Fruit Sorbet ($5).

The donuts are served warm so the doughy goodness can be dunked in choices of chocolate sauce, raspberry coulis and bourbon creme anglaise, which adds to the decadence of the dessert.

As for the vegan fruit sorbet, it’s creamy, and the fruit flavors vary from week-to-week so diners can expect a different flavor each time.

The entirety of Vauxhall’s menu is available until 4 a.m., making it the perfect spot for diners who want a little snack or drink after a show or night out. To go with craft burgers, Vauxhall offers craft cocktails and craft beers to round out the culinary experience.

The Fish Camp Tacos at Vauxhall are complex in flavor.

For Finneran, Mignano and Valentino, Vauxhall is more than a burger bar. It’s their way of catering to diners who don’t want just any burger and beers, but food and drinks that go hand in hand with their creative senses.

Lotus Vintage is not a retail store offering a vintage style, it’s the “real deal,” said owner Adriene Passannante, selling only vintage clothing that’s 25 years old, or more.

“The word vintage is overused,” Passannante, of Bayville, said. “People would come in and say, ‘Oh, it’s vintage style,’ and we’d say, ‘No, it’s the real deal,’ It’s not like you’re walking into a store and you’re buying a reproduction, you’re buying a piece of history.”

Lotus Vintage, located at 147 Woodbury Road in Huntington, sells items that hail from the 1920s through the early 1980s. Passannante said the shop sells “fashion history,” offering dresses, skirts, tops, pants, outerwear, shoes, boots, jewelry and more.

Someone explained it to me as: If I had $100 in singles and I had three buckets in front of me to put them in, No. 1 for equities (stocks), No. 2 fixed income (bonds, CDs) and No. 3 being cash (totally liquid), how many dollars would I put in each bucket? If you are younger and have many years until retirement you would most likely put the most dollars in the stock bucket, a small amount in the bond bucket and a very small amount in the cash bucket.

As you get older and closer to retirement, you should think about changing the amount of bucks in the buckets. Perhaps reducing to 60 percent in stocks, 30 percent on bonds and 10 percent in cash. This is because you have fewer years until retirement and you want to cushion in

case the markets have a large correction, which is inevitable at some point in time.

Then as you enter retirement you may be more comfortable making another shift in which you have 40 percent in stocks, 40 percent in bonds and 20 percent in cash.

Now, I hear too many people who are within a few years of retirement talking about moving all their assets into fixed income and cash to be safe.

They do not take into consideration the effects of inflation and taxes on their portfolio. Remember, if you retire around the age of 65, statistically you are expected to live another 20 or more years. Without some growth in your portfolio inflation will take a large bite of your funds.

Creating and following a form of these allocation models can have a major effect on reaching your financial goals. There are very valid reasons that asset allocation is critical to sound investing: • No single type of investment produces the best return year in and year out. Look up a Callahan chart and you will see how various categories if investments can change radically from one year to the next. I have seen a category be the top performing stock one year and literally be the very worst the very next year, then back up near the top again.

• Bonds produce better returns in some years and weaker in others. They are usually driven by interest rates. Interest rates

In December 2015, Passannante moved the business once more to a 500-square-foot showroom on Woodbury Road where she maintains around 1,500-2,000 pieces of vintage clothing. She said she stayed in Huntington with a physical location because many people within the area sell her vintage items as well.

“It allows me to focus more on the online store but I still wanted to offer something to our hardcore clients,” she said, adding that she loves the hunt, and when people come in with great vintage items.

“What I find with vintage is that a lot of people that shop vintage are looking for things that are uniquely them, their style,” Passannante said.

“You’re not going to walk down the street and see someone wearing the same dress or pants or top. It’s one of a kind.”

Brokerage firms and other advisors often modify their recommendations regularly, usually in small increments, in response to changes in the economy. Any allocation model can be modified to suit your goals, your tolerance for risk and your time frame. These asset allocation models are guides to give you a start and then you and your advisor can adjust as you see fit going forward.

Knowing the intelligence of having

an allocation model to guide you is wise; sticking to it is often very difficult. As your portfolio grows with a good stock market the allocations can be can be thrown off. The stock portion may be bigger than the original allocation, so you should consider selling the profitable portion of the stocks and reallocation that money into one of the areas (bonds and cash) which have not grown. This way you take the profit (selling high) and putting it to work in an area which could grow on a different market move.

When you dollar cost into your portfolio, you should add money to the buckets in the percentages you

have. For example, if you have an allocation of 60 percent stocks, 30 percent in bonds and 10 percent in cash and you are going to add $1,000 to the portfolio, you put $600 into the stocks, $300 into the bonds and $100 into the cash. This way you keep the asset allocation you want.

Most people who have smaller amounts to add to their portfolios may consider mutual funds rather than individual stocks. You will get a better diversification to your portfolio. Talk to your certified financial planner about considering alternative investments to add more diversification. Real estate, international securities, etc.

Oyster Beds In Huntington Bay Disturbed March 24, 1888 Bushels of Oysters were washed ashore from the beds of the Messrs Lowndes in Huntington Bay during a storm on March 19, 1888. Volunteers from the village assisted in returning the living oysters back to the bottom of the bay. The Huntington company lost thousands of dollars’ worth of oysters due to the incident.

First Days Of Spring March 18, 1904 Day and night were exactly the same length on March 17, 1904 according to a source in charge of the farmers’ almanac. The sun rose and set at exactly 9 minutes past 6 o’clock. The equinox occurred three days before the official first day of spring on March 20, 1904.

Huntington Considers New Lighting Deal March 18, 1910 A renewed contract that would extend street light times from dusk to dawn was considered by the Huntington Town Board on March 11, 1910. The original contract, which only provided light from dusk to midnight for $16.25 per light, had expired in November. The offer from the The Huntington Light and Power company would cost the town only $3.75 more ($20) per light.

The company spokesperson also said the 20 candlepower lights would be upgraded to 32 candlepower lights.

2nd Annual Suffolk Marathon Gets Sponsor Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced March 10 that Catholic Health Services has been named as a Medal of Honor title sponsor for the 2nd Annual Suffolk County Marathon and Freedom Fest, which will take place on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016.

“I am proud that Catholic Health Services has joined us once again in our efforts to enhance local veteran services and programs throughout Suffolk County by becoming the title sponsor of this year’s marathon, half marathon and newly created 5k race.” said Bellone of the announcement, which was made at the Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

Bellone continued, “We thank CHS for their continuous commitment to our local veterans as they played an integral role in last year’s event, which drew more than 3,500 runners. With their support, we expect those numbers to grow this year.”

As a title sponsor, Catholic Health Services will be included on all race-related materials, and featured in the Finish Line Festival area. It will also have its logo included on the start and finish race banners, mile markers, and on the front of all participant and volunteer t-shirts.

For the second consecutive year, Catholic Health Services will also be the official medical sponsor of the event and provide medical support to hundreds of runners last year, including medical tent services and field hospital operations.

Alan Guerci, M.D., president and CEO of Catholic Health Services, said the health system was “honored” to serve as the race medicine provider of last year’s marathon.

“Last year, CHS’ medical team included nearly 100 health professionals who ensured the well-being of more than 3,500 marathon participants,”

Bellone also announced that 19 local not-for-profit and service organizations have been selected by the Suffolk County Marathon Fund Disbursement Advisory Committee to receive funding designated for veteran services raised from last year’s inaugural event. Pending legislative approval, organizations were ex-

pected to receive notification of their awards on Tuesday, after deadline. The planned grants will range in funding amounts from $2,000-$23,600.

The Suffolk County Marathon Fund Disbursement Advisory Committee received nearly 50 applications and reviewed each grant application and ranked them based on a certain criteria, such as establishing a set of priorities and developing a list of objectives for veteran needs and services.

First Data Vice President of Communications and Corporate Affairs Mark Murphy said in a statement Monday that the decision to close the branch was shared with employees last year.

According to a First Data fact sheet, the company was founded in 1971 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The sheet, which is available on the company’s website, said First Data employed around 23,000 in 2015.

According to Anthony Catapano, executive director for the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency, First Data received $3.283 million in tax breaks from the Suffolk IDA over a 10-year-period that began in 2003. That figure includes sales tax exemptions on construc-

tion materials and equipment, as well as a property tax abatement.

“They made a business decision based on the proximity of the clients.

It is unfortunate, but Suffolk IDA does everything in our power to attract and retain businesses to the county,” Catapano said in a statement.

There are plenty of familiar, experienced faces on the 2016 Half Hollow Hills High School West softball team.

Of the 14 Colts that made up the 2014 Suffolk County championship team, 12 of them are back this season as juniors and seniors. And the veteran group, along with a trio of underclassmen newcomers, is ready to make another run at the playoffs, head coach Bryan Dugan said Monday.

“We have all of our starters coming back. They learned a lot the last two seasons,” Dugan said. “We’re going to rely on their experience to get us through this season… and through some tight spots.”

Dugan said the Colts “believe in defense. We don’t want to give the other teams extra outs.”

Especially not teams in what’s expected to a “difficult” Suffolk League IV this season, which consists of former playoff teams like Hauppauge and Kings Park, and reining Long Island champion, Eastport-South Manor.

In order to reach the playoffs this

season, Suffolk big schools, which include Hills West, will need to boast a league record of 8-6 or better.

Along with defense, Dugan is hopeful Hills West’s depth and flexibility will also help it to another successful season.

“We’re a very deep team. We have the ability to move people around,” he said.

Dugan said that includes a pair of pitchers in senior Alexis Kleet and sophomore Jillian Weinstein who “will spend a good amount of time on the mound.” Kleet earned AllConference honors last season, and Weinstein is a newcomer to Hills West’s varsity softball program.

Defensively, Alexandra Parkas is expected to start behind the plate.

She’s a returning All-League catcher who led the Colts in batting average last year.

Alyse McAlpine, a senior who also earned All-Conference honors last year, is expected to take second base; Gabrielle Casalino, a senior and captain of this year’s team, will take to third base; shortstop will see a platoon consisting of senior Nicole Graber and Rachel Katz, a sophomore and another newcomer to the

varsity squad; and rounding out the infield at first base is expected to be Kleet and Weinstein, alternating when the other is on the pitcher’s mound.

In the outfield, Sarah Auricchio, Rose Cipoletti, Graber, Michelle Kaplan and Renee Pino are expected to see time. Kaplan, a sophomore, is also a newcomer to the varsity team.

Julia Toscano is expected to come off the bench to lend the Colts her “ability to hit” with a swing Dugan said he “loves.” Others Colts expected to come off the bench are Danielle Blaustein, Amanda Bentz, and Nicole Rivera, all of whom were on the 2014 county championship team.

Dugan said the team’s lineup will be “interesting with a mix of some power, with some speed here and there.”

He added, “I don’t know what type of team we’re going to be yet.

It’s challenging, but it’s fun having all these girls at your disposal that you can put in different spots, and hopefully it’s going to difficult for other teams to game plan against us.”

Deep, Experienced Colts Step To Plate In League IV

Senior Alexis Kleet is returning to the Colts this season to make up one half of Hills West’s planned pitching duo with sophomore Jillian Weinstein. which welcomed them for the opening game of the League IV season on Tuesday after deadline. The Colts were also scheduled to face East Islip on Wednesday after deadline.

The Colts are slated to travel to Bellport on March 29 for another League IV game that’s scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Summer Hoops League Gears Up For 19th Season

The Half Hollow Hills Youth Basketball League is gearing up for its 19th summer season of fun, sportsmanship and competition, expecting to enroll in the action around 500 hoops aficionados grades K-12, as well as adults.

“We’re trying to give residents in our community, and surrounding communities, something… fun to do during the summer, two to three nights a week,” Dennis Fields, of Dix Hills, founder of the league, said. “It keeps them occupied in a fun, safe environment in our backyard.”

The league, which is also known as Fury basketball, offers both a youth program and adult league, which will be hosted at gymnasiums throughout the Half Hollow Hills School District, and in nearby communities. Fields said he was still awaiting approval from the district on which gyms will be available to the league for the upcoming season.

Registration is now open for the Half Hollow Hills Youth Basketball League’s 19th summer season.

The youth basketball program – which includes instructional workouts, intramural leagues and private training – is open to boys and girls entering grades K-12 in September 2015. It’s broken up ac-

cording to age and skill level.

The adult program that’s open to virtually all ages, but regulated by skill level, divided into “A, B and C” divisions.

Youths will be asked to participate in an evaluation during in-house registration, which is slated for 6-9 p.m. on both April 4 and April 6 at West Hollow Middle School (250 Old Country Road, Melville). Fields can also be contacted directly at cmish11746@gmail.com to schedule a workout where a rating will be assigned.

Until April 30, registration fees are $215 for the first child, and each additional child is $180. Late registration feels will be enforced for applications submitted after April 30, and after May 31.

Teams are expected to be formed in May before organized play begins in June. The league will run through August. All practices and games will be played on weekday evenings.
