Neighborhood Watch To Keep ‘Eye On Triangle’

Melville resident Chris Graziose has launched neighborhood watch group Eye On The Triangle to keep tabs on the 350-acres area bounded by Wolf Hill Road, Old Country Road and New York Avenue in Melville.

Melville resident Chris Graziose has spearheaded a neighborhood watch group, Eye On The Triangle, as a response to what he considers a “rash of disturbances” in the triangular zone bounded by Wolf Hill Road, Old Country Road and New York Avenue.

Some of the disturbances detailed by Graziose, 49, allegedly occurred on Earl Road, where he lives with his fiancé.

He said residences on the road have been broken into on around six occasions over the last month, leading him to start the neighborhood watch.

One of those incidents occurred across the street from

his home, he said, where thieves disabled lights in order to steal a motorcycle and an ATV in the same night.

“We’ve had a tremendous amount of crime in the area,” Graziose, a 19-year Melville resident, said. “We’re going to take it into our hands. The more awareness we make… hopefully it will keep the riffraff out.”

Graziose cites the proximity of the triangle to highways as being particularly attractive to would-be thieves. From its northernmost point, the roughly 350-acre triangle is 1 mile away from the Northern State Parkway.

“You can clean someone out and be on the Northern State in 11 seconds,” he said, adding that he believes criminals have

been mostly active between 11 p.m.-3 a.m. “We are realizing that the entrance to the triangle, the houses close to those streets are the ones getting hit.

It’s kind of easy access.”

Graziose did not criticize the Suffolk County Police Department’s Second Precinct, which patrols the area. However, he said that, as residents of the area, members of the neighborhood watch can do more.

One of the first steps, he said, will be partnering with the Second Precinct. Graziose said members of Eye On The Triangle were expected to attend the precinct's monthly community meeting, which was scheduled for Wednesday, after deadline.

Manufacturer Contests Plastic Bag Ban

The proposed ban of singleuse plastic bags in Suffolk County retail stores has been put on hold following concerns raised by a Melville manufacturer, which produces plastic bags.

Ken Trottere, vice president of plastic bag manufacturer PolyPak Industries, said the proposed ban would negatively impact his business, considering it “unnecessary.” Poly-Pak, which also produces consumer and commercial plastic packaging and municipal signs, employs over (Continued on page A23)

Democrats Square Off In Congressional Primary Race

With candidates facing an April 14 filing deadline for designating petitions for the 3rd Congressional District seat, Democrats in the crowded field are looking for an edge before the June 28 primary.

Nassau County Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs and Suffolk County Democratic Committee Chairman Richard Schaffer have agreed to remain neutral, choosing to not endorse any of the candidates at this time.

The 3rd Congressional District seat, held by Rep. Steve Israel for the past 16 years, cuts a swath along the north shore of Long Island from northeast Queens through the towns of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay, east to Huntington and Smithtown.

There are 507,432 registered voters, and Democrats outnumber Republicans 194,508 to 152,879. Another 130,581 have no party affiliation, according to the New York State Board of Elections website.

Registered Conservatives and the Green, Working Families, Independence, Women’s Equality, Reform and “Other” party members add up to another 29,464 voters in the district.

There are 39,150 registered Democrats in the northeast portion of Queens that lies within the district; 98,918 in Nassau and 56,440 in Suffolk.

Four Democrats, three from Nassau County and one from Suffolk are vying for an opportunity to capture the seat; among them former Glen Cove Mayor and Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, former North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman, North Hempstead Town Councilwoman Anna Kaplan and Suffolk County Legislator Steven Stern, a Dix Hills-based attorney specializing in elder law, who is termlimited out of his 16th District seat.

With a presidential election in November, Democrats see an opportunity to capture the votes needed to keep the seat in the hands of a Democrat against the apparent Republican candidate, state Senator Jack Martins, who currently does not have a primary opponent. State Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci, who represents the 10th Assembly District and had been considering a run for the Congressional seat, has decided to seek another term in the Assembly, according to his spokesman.

The Democratic primary includes a field of high profile former and current elected officials. Suozzi, who served as mayor of Glen Cove from 1994-2001, and Nassau executive from 2002-2009, says he is running to fight for middle class families, seniors, veterans and the environ-

ment, and that his record as a reformer, including his “Fix Albany” campaign while serving as Nassau executive, will resonate with the electorate.

“Washington isn’t working and people are angry at the partisanship and gridlock in government. I am running for Congress because I am a responsible reformer with a proven track record of getting things done, and I won’t be afraid to take on the status quo,” Suozzi said in a statement.

In recent years, however, Suozzi’s campaigns have had a difficult time gaining traction. In 2006, while Nassau executive, he ran an unsuccessful primary for New York State governor against Eliot Spitzer and, in 2009, while seeking a third term, he was challenged by long-time Nassau Legislator Edward Mangano, a Republican, and was narrowly defeated.

Souzzi sought to win back the Nassau executive’s seat in a 2013 rematch with Mangano. He was beat handily – 59% to 41% - in spite of a successful court challenge by Nassau County Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs to block third party We Count candidate Andrew Hardwick from remaining on the ballot. Party leaders were reportedly concerned that Hardwick’s campaign would siphon much needed minority votes away from Suozzi.

Kaiman served for a decade as supervisor for the Town of North Hempstead. He resigned in 2013 to become the governor’s Special Advisor on Superstorm Sandy relief. That same year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo named him chairman of the Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA), a state appointed board created to oversee Nassau County’s finances.

After resigning as North Hempstead supervisor, and prior to accepting the governor’s appointments, Kaiman was nominated to Nassau District Court, but opted instead to accept the appointments as special advisor and NIFA chairman. In addition, in the past, his name had been floated to head the Long Island Power Authority.

several elections.

“I think it’s a race where the voters need to decide who they want to represent them and their concerns,” he said.

His focus, he said, will be on helping seniors age in place, ensuring that the resources Long Island and New York provide come back to the island for infrastructure projects, and continuing his priority of working on issues relating to the labor movement and women’s rights, including equal pay for equal work.

Anna Kaplan represents 40,000 residents in the Town of North Hempstead where she is considered a “detail-oriented and hardworking advocate for her constituents.” Kaplan, who was elected to the North Hempstead Town Council in 2011 and is the first Iranian-American woman elected to town office in the state of New York, believes a candidate needs to be focused on constituent issues. She was born in Iran and became a U.S. citizen in 1995.

Prior to being elected to the town council, Kaplan was elected to the Great Neck Public Library District Board of Trustees and served as its vice president. In addition she was

appointed to the Town of North Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals.

Kaplan says her priorities are to make college affordable for every child on Long Island and in Queens; to raise the minimum wage and fight for paid family and medical leave as well as equal pay for equal work, and to hold the line on taxes for middleclass families. In addition, she says she will make suitable housing a priority for every wounded warrior.

With three candidates from Nassau and one from Suffolk, some Democrats believe Stern has the edge.

However, Stern says the job of public servant and a sense of being focused on constituent issues will make the difference, not the county in which the candidate resides.

“Geography will not decide who wins the primary but rather it will be the candidate who has a proven track record and has values that are important to residents. It is important to not only talk about the issues, you need to show what you’ve done and how you’ve done it,” Stern said.

“You need to do things in a way that shows you are working hard and making people proud.”

Stern emphasizes his record of getting things done. He said his accomplishments, which are based on his values, have made the middle class, the environment and veterans and their families a priority. He said he is passionate about women’s health issues and equal pay for equal work.

Stern said, “I have a proven track record - an ability to get things done that are most important to our residents.”

1,757 Students Opt Out Across the Town of Huntington last week, thousands of students in grades 3-8 did not take state English Language Arts examinations, including 45.1 percent of eligible students in the Half Hollow Hills School District, according to statistics provided by the district.

Figures show that 1,757 of the eligible 3,893 students across the district refused the test. Last year, figures showed that 1,689 students, or 42 percent, opted out of the ELA exams in Half Hollow Hills. Information for parents on how to opt their children out of the test was posted to the Half Hollow Hills website (Halfhollowhills.k12.ny.us) last week.

Opting out, or refusing the tests, has become a rallying cry of advo-

cates against the Common Core, a national curriculum adopted in 2010 by 44 states – including New York – to create consistent educational standards across the country, and ensure pupils are college- and work-ready when they graduate high school.

The state Department of Education made changes to both the ELA and math tests this year. The math tests were scheduled to be administered this week.

The tests now consist of fewer questions, and students have unlimited time to complete each section.

Scores on the tests will not be used to evaluate teachers and principals, but will instead be used for diagnostic or programmatic determinations within school districts.

Public Weighs In On Gateway Plaza Plan

Both support for, and resistance toward, a threestory mixed-use building and a separate parking structure proposed for Gateway Plaza in Huntington Station emerged during a Huntington Zoning Board of Appeals public hearing on March 31.

Both the mixed use structure -- which would have retail space, and 33 studio and 33 one-bedroom apartments -- and the 129-space parking structure are part of Huntington Station master developer Renaissance Downtowns’ overarching revitalization efforts The applicant requires 10 variances from the ZBA -- including a parking variances to make up for a deficiency of 143 parking stalls -- paving the way for public input on the proposed structures during last month’s hearing.

Robert Rockelein, board member of Huntington Matters and the Greater Huntington Civic Group, advocated for caution moving forward, but said, “Generally, a mixed-use building outside the scope of the zoning regulations, in an area begging for revitalization is considered a good thing. One would certainly help catalyze the HS revitalization.”

Steven Spucces, president of the Greater Huntington Civic Group, disagreed, calling the housing density of the proposed 16,500-square-foot mixeduse structure a “slap in the face to the community.”

Huntington Station resident Matt Harris said the proposed density seems high, but isn’t opposed to it.

Though density was a hot topic for several of the 11 speakers, the applicant does not need such relief based due to property being zoned in the C-6 Overlay District.

James McGoldrick, of Huntington Station, supported the project, but took aim at the applicant’s proposal to make up for the parking deficiency, in part, by utilizing the municipal parking located across New York Avenue, which was detailed by traffic engineer Osmond Barry.

McGoldrick said this could cause problems with commuters who utilize the lot, and residents of the proposed structure.

McGoldrick added, “The revitalization program is well-needed down there. I remember what it was

like in the old days when everything was there, and now it’s been looking like garbage for 40 years.”

Dolores Thompson, a longtime Huntington Station community leader, said the old Huntington Station “was alive and well,” and is hopeful to see it return to its former glory.

“We had banks, we had doctors’ offices, we had all those things. It was taken away,” she said. “The gateway to Huntington is Huntington Station.

Bring back something that we can be proud of. I am prayerful that you will really give this some consideration.”

Before the ZBA makes its decision, it has requested the applicant supply several documents for review, including a marketing study regarding the residential dwellings, and the credentials of the engineer.

After this, the board has 62 days to make a decision on the variances.

Suffolk police said that, as they were investigating another incident, a 65-yearold Wheatley Heights man refused to identify himself and allegedly resisted arrest on Fairfield Drive at around 5:40 p.m. on April 9. The man flailed his arms and pushed an officer away, according to police, and when they to arrest him, he refused to place his hands behind his back. Police charged him with resisting arrest and obstructing a government administrator.

High Operator A 30-year-old Dix Hills man was arrested in Coram on drug charges at around 3:22 p.m., police said. According to police, the man was found sleeping in his 2003 GMC while the car was still running. Police said they found prescription pills, a spoon containing heroin residue and a hypodermic needle. The man was charged with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, possession of a hypodermic instrument and operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs.

Pistol Stolen An unknown person stole jewelry, money and a pistol from a 2015 Jeep on Clafford Lane in Melville at around 6:57 a.m. on April 3, police said. The vehicle was left unlocked, according to police.

Board Excludes Hamlets From Bistro Legislation The Huntington Town Board voted last week to remove the town’s hamlet centers from legislation that allows small-scale restaurants to apply for liquor licenses, and add more seats.

The legislation was first proposed

by Huntington Councilwoman Tracey Edwards in November, and was approved in January. However, in its approved form, the legislation included businesses located in town’s hamlet centers, which some cited as a concern due to limited parking in some of those areas. The hamlet centers, as defined by the Horizons 2020 Comprehensive Plan are Cold Spring Harbor, East Northport, Greenlawn, Huntington Station and downtown Huntington.

During the April 5 town board meeting, the amended legislation was approved 4-0, with Huntington Councilman Mark Cuthbertson not voting as he was not in attendance.

The legislation allows small restaurants under 2,500 square feet, such as pizzerias, to apply for a “bistro” classification, allowing business owners to

Edwards has said that the legislation is intended to help small-business owners who are operating in strip malls to be more competitive with larger restaurants. Prior to the adopted legislation, small-scale food shops could not seat more than 15 people, nor could they serve alcohol.

State Budget Process An ‘Insult To Taxpayers’ This year we saw yet another New York State budget crafted by three men in a room, and ratified in the dead of night. How many times must we shamefully repeat history before the New York State Assembly Majority gets serious about ethics and transparency?

Rather than allowing lawmakers to review the budget for the three days required by law, Governor Cuomo again chose to rush a vote by using a ‘Message of Necessity.’ Obviously, this gover-

nor does not believe that ‘haste makes waste.’

Despite this criticallyflawed, opaque process, we have finally adopted significant measures to reverse failed policies of the past, especially in the realm of education. Thanks to the elimination of the harmful Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) education cuts and a $626 million increase in Foundation Aid, public school aid has reached $24.2 billion, marking a $1.4 billion increase over last year’s levels. Starting in 2018, families will begin to reap the rewards of a middle-class tax cut that, once phased in, will result in $1.9 billion in

savings in 2020-2021. Library aid has increased by $4 million, and the state has committed $25 million in additional funding to provide services for our neighbors who are grappling with heroin and opioid addiction.

I am also proud to announce that, following efforts by me, Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R-East Northport) and local safe-boating advocates, a plan to cut Suffolk County’s state aid for marine police in half was eliminated from the budget.

This decision will result in safer waters this boating season.

However, critical issues remain unaddressed. The

and convicted on corruption charges would be the sufficient shock needed to bring about profound reform. The Assembly Majority, sadly, seems to have concluded that preserving the status quo is preferable, which will allow Albany to remain a breeding ground for corruption. It is an insult to the taxpayers of New York State.

Up To $5K Offered For Info On Graffiti Vandals Nassau officials want to halt what they say is a recent spike in graffiti tags at Long Island Rail Road stations across the county. They’re offering up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

Nassau Executive Edward P. Mangano announced last week an initiative between the county and the MTA Long Island Rail Road to remove and combat graffiti at the Bellmore, Massapequa, Merrick, Seaford and Wantagh stations. According to officials, residents have witnessed a recent graffiti spike at the branches.

Mangano said, “Nassau County will not tolerate quality of life crimes such as graffiti as it hurts property values, drives away business, and takes away from our suburban way of life. Graffiti is everyone’s problem and residents can do their part by reporting graffiti along the Long Island Rail Road or on county properties to my office so that it can be removed.”

The LIRR is working to remove the graffiti, and the Nassau County Police Department has partnered with MTA Police, which has full jurisdiction over crimes that occur on LIRR properties.

Nassau police said graffiti incidents have typically occurred overnight and generally consist of tags. In an effort to partner with the MTA Police, Nassau police have made intelligence-led assets available, including increased marked cars; uniformed officers; plainclothes detectives; and remotely monitored video surveillance cameras on station platforms.

Through Crime Stoppers, Nassau police are offering up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

They ask anyone with information to call 1-800-244-8477, or the MTA Police Detective Division District #2 at 516-222-6501, and refer to PD Case Report COPE #3-16. Callers can remain anonymous.

When she was 7 years old, Melody Rose would often be found swinging back and forth on the swing set at her South Huntington home, singing sweet tunes to the family Yorkie Terrier, Teddy.

“I’ve always been writing and singing little melodies since I was a child,” said Rose, now 27. “I grew up involved in a lot of theatrical productions, but professionally I’ve been singing since I was 17 years old. It’s been about 10 years now that I’ve been out on the Long Island scene doing gigs and stuff like that.”

Rose, a singer-songwriter, has embarked on a career in jazz-influenced pop music, releasing her first, self-titled extended play of eight songs in March 2015. She’s currently collaborating with her boyfriend Andrew Carroll, a jazz pianist, on her second album, which will consist of 12 songs and is expected to release later this year.

And on April 18, Rose will venture to Grasso’s restaurant in Cold Spring Harbor for a special show.

Born Melody Rose McNamara, she grew up in South Huntington with brother John, a guitar player. Rose was cut from the same cloth has her parents, with her mother, Patricia

Rynn, a singer and a songwriter, and her father, Glenn McNamara, is CEO of Nationwide Touring Services, which handles transportation for bands during tours around the country.

“I grew up going to a lot of concerts from a young age, and I just always wanted to be involved in music,” Rose said. “Becoming a musician has always been a part of who I am so I’ve always had a passion for it.”

In high school, Rose was involved in both NYSSMA and chorus at Walt Whitman. She graduated from there in 2006.

Rose recounted a time when her father pushed her to start a band or another musical venture and told her: “There’s nothing worse than having an award winning voice that nobody ever hears.” Rose said that moment stood out to her, she’s wanted to “get out there and sing for people ever since.”

“He’s always been a really inspiring person for me,” she said.

Shortly after, Rose started taking private opera and classical music lessons with Kenneth Friese, of the Old First Presbyterian Church in Huntington. She also earned AllState and All-County nods in NYSSMA during her senior year at Whitman.

Singer-songwriter Melody Rose, of South Huntington, has been singing and writing songs since she was a child growing up with a mother who was also a singer and songwriter and a father who is the CEO of Nationwide Touring Services. wrote down all her lyric ideas in journals, eventually filling up more than 10 of them with ideas for songs.

She also learned to play the piano.

However, Rose added, she didn’t really fine-tune her songwriting craft until college, when she developed approximately 40 songs that are now ready to be recorded.

Rose first attended LIU Post before transferring to Five Towns College in Dix Hills for her sophomore year in 2007. While at school, Rose joined up with cover band Free Shots in 2009, and also freelanced with another band, Free Noise Brigade, before going solo.

In 2012, she earned from Five Towns a bachelor's degree in music with a concentration in music business. She later went back to LIU Post to earn her master’s degree in music composition in 2014.

Rose compares her soulful voice to those prominent artists Adele, Norah Jones or Sara Bareilles. She said she looks up to artists like Billy Joel, David Bowie, The Beatles and Diana Ross.

At Grasso’s on Monday, Rose and Carroll are set to take the stage at 6 p.m.

“We just put our own kind of flare on it which is kind of cool,” Rose said. “I’m really excited… it’s going to be a good night.”

The free show promises to incorporate jazz standards, singer-songwriter tunes and an arrangement of tunes from other artists like the Foo Fighters and David Bowie.

2016 Family Earth Day Expo Set For April 23 The Town of Huntington is celebrating Earth Day in a big way next weekend by hosting its annual Family Earth Day Expo.

This year’s event is Saturday, April 23, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Town Hall parking lot (100 Main St., Huntington). The event will be held rain or shine.

“Each year, the town tries to highlight how residents can help preserve the environment while savings themselves money, and this year’s expo is no exception,” stated Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone. “Whether it’s safely shredding unwanted documents to bringing e-waste for recycling or dropping off unneeded and unwanted medicines, residents will find a variety of ways they can get into the Earth Day spirit.”

Through an effort co-sponsored by the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, residents will be able to drop off unwanted and unneeded medications, which will be taken by the Suffolk County Police Department for environmentally safe disposal. The town will also distribute information about the adverse environmental effects on groundwater

and Long Island’s drinking water supply when proper protocols are not followed in disposing of pharmaceutical drugs.

Covanta is the annual sponsor for Plug-In To E-Cycling Event, which is the latest addition to the town’s recycling program, giving residents and businesses the opportunity to dispose of obsolete e-waste items such as cell phones, pagers, radios, stereos, computers, laptops, fax machines and televisions.

Huntington Councilman Mark Cuthbertson stated, “In today’s technologically advanced world, identity thieves have more tools in their toolboxes to locate and steal our very valuable and sensitive personal information.”

He added, “Identity theft can cause a significant amount of financial and emotional hardship, which is why it is so important help protect ourselves from falling prey. Thanks to Safety Shred, boxes of your outdated or unwanted personal documents can be safely discarded to protect you and your family from becoming a victim of identity theft.”

Returning to the Town of Huntington’s annual Family Earth Day Expo is the Safety Shred, where attendees can bring unwanted outdated documents for on-site disposal. leaders in the on-site document destruction and identity theft prevention giants on Long Island, will also make an appearance this year.

Guests are asked to bring old, unwanted, outdated documents for onsite disposal. There is a three banker-box size limit per person.

Elsewhere, The Green Showcase will offer multiple demonstrations, including residential solar energy, organic gardening and fun activities for the kids. In addition, children can learn how compost is made, and plant a seed in a recycled pot.

Representatives from Cornell Cooperative Extension will provide children of all ages the opportunity to touch and experience a variety of sea specimens in their marine life touch tank, as they demonstrate the importance of protecting our precious marine environment. There will also be sign up information available on Cornell’s environmental summer camp programs.

“Children and parents alike will definitely have the opportunity for a lot of ‘hands-on’ fun at this event,” stated Cuthbertson. “In recognition of Earth Day, it is equally important to be able to show families across Huntington how easy it is to protect kids from harmful chemicals and pesticides, how to make homes and cars more energy efficient and how to save money in the process.”

Residents will have a chance to win a free and custom painted 50gallon rainwater barrel for garden use, sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension. Rainwater barrels can help conserve and store rainwater to benefit gardens. Storms that

drop a quarter-inch of rain on an average home can yield approximately 200 gallons of water.

Also back by popular demand is the Touch A Truck Event, which promises to be a unique and fun opportunity for kids of all ages to climb on, touch and learn about the functionality and safety aspects of the different trucks displayed. Included will be a fire truck, rescue vehicles and a garbage truck among others.

The first 200 residents to trade in a plastic grocery bag will receive a free, ecofriendly tote bag courtesy of Southdown Market Place of Northport.

Another giveaway will provide the first 250 residents with a bare-root tree sapling courtesy of the National Wildlife Federation. Residents who receive a tree will be asked to plant it on their property. The tree saplings will include red oak, white oak and sugar maple. Planting instructions will be included with each tree. The goal of the tree giveaway is not only to better inform residents about proper tree planting and tree benefits, but also to create an interactive map that shows each tree’s location, the species of tree, and physical characteristics of the tree and a timeline of photos that shows the growth of each tree.

Boaters can dispose of shrinkwrap either onsite at Earth Day 2015, or anytime through Memorial Day weekend at the town’s Recycling Center (641 New York Ave., Huntington).

Masalah Grill Cooks Up Authentic Indian Cuisine

Farzana Sohail has committed herself to providing diners of Masalah Grill in Huntington Station authentic Indian cuisine. The owner of the New York Avenue Pakistani/Indian restaurant that sits across from the Walt Whitman Shops, said she uses “the freshest ingredients, spices imported from India directly and original recipes passed down from generation to generation.”

The end goal, she added, is to make diners feel at home.

“I want our diners to experience that every dish they eat is homemade, and that we have done everything to make them feel at home,” she said.

Masalah Grill opened in March 2015, originally serving as a takeout restaurant. Since then, however, Sohail has transitioned to accommodate dine-in customers due to popularity.

Walk in and diners are greeted with colors of red and earth tones that provide a relaxed setting.

Prominently placed is a take-out counter up front, serving steady streams of customers, but not interfering a dine-in area built to accommodate up to 18 diners.

To begin a journey packed with flavor, choices include Chicken

Tikka Seekh ($9), Veggie Samosa ($2/each) and Chicken Samosa ($2.50/each).

The Chicken Tikka Seekh are tandoor-marinated chicken thighs that are tender enough to cut with a fork.

Dip the chicken pieces in the mayonnaise and cream dip, and it cuts down the spicy kick, as well as highlighting the marinade.

The veggie and chicken samosas are fried turnovers that are flaky and delicate at the same time. The potato and pea veggie samosa, as well as the chicken samosa melt in your mouth along with the crust. In addition, homemade dips like tamarind and cilantro and mint enhances the flavor of the samosas.

As for entrees, some of the standouts include the Chicken Tikka Masala (butter chicken-$14), Baingan Ka Bharta (eggplant-$12) and Goat Biryani ($15/serves 2).

The chicken tikka masala is so tender that diners will not want to miss eating every last bite. The sauce is creamy but not heavy, perfect for sopping with a piece of Naan.

The Baingan Ka Bharta is roasted and mashed eggplant that is cooked with various spices, making it a complex flavored dish.

The Huntington-based franchise of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate can alter homes to satisfy customers’ wants and needs, and spruce up properties before they hit the open market through collaboration with Atlantic Shores Builders and Developers, a development company started 32 years ago by Jerry Gucciardo, who is now president of the franchise.

A Melville-based elder law estate planning firm will host a free, elder law and veterans benefits telephone hotline next month in recognition of National Older Americans Month.

Genser Dubow Genser & Cona (GDGC) will open the hotline to seniors and their families starting May 4 when Long Island and New York City residents can call 631-390-5000 from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. to speak directly with an attorney. Residents can ask questions about how to protect their assets, and get needed care.

GDGC representatives said that every person needs a customized plan, but added that there are basic strategies that apply to everyone.

Some of the firm’s suggestions including making asset transfers before a crisis occurs, preferably five years before needing long term care.

It also recommends transferring assets to a living trust, including title to the home, in order to protect its value.

The hotline will also be open to veterans. There are proposed

changes in Congress that would impose a 36-month look back and penalty period on asset transfers for veterans and spouses applying for Aid and Attendance pension benefits. These changes would impact a veteran/spouse’s ability to secure pension benefits to help cover the costs of a home health aide or the cost of assisted living.

Hoops Tourney Raises $2K+ For Village In Need

Every year, students in grades 1-8 at Saint Anthony of Padua Church in East Northport an end-of-the-year project. This year, the 20 participating classes, banded together to aid a cause that stretches far past East Northport. They’re raising money to build a medical clinic for a village in Kisoro, Uganda.

A total of $85,000 is required to build the clinic, which would be constructed in the home village of Father Vian Ntegerej’Imana, associate pastor at St. Anthony of Padua.

the 6th grade religion class of Govinda Willard, hosted its fundraiser on Saturday, a basketball tournament that raised over $2,000. These funds will be combined with other funds raised by other classes, and tallied Saturday on the final of the school’s “Young Stewards' Day Fair.”

The round-robin basketball tournament was held in the gymnasium of the Trinity Regional School, drawing around 34 athletes from the Catholic Youth Organization, eight students from Willard’s class and 20 volunteers.

Students also enjoyed a video game tournament booth, a face painting station and got to chat with

members of the Columbia Lions, the NCAA Division I 2016 CIT Champions. Five of the Lions put on a halftime dunk show during the fundraiser.

Funds were raised through a suggested $5 donation at the door; a bake sale; and 50/50 raffles. Each player was also asked for a $25 sponsorship in order to participate in the event.

Willard said more than 70,000 children in Uganda die every year because of lack of medical care.

The other classes at Saint Anthony of Padua Church are also raising funds through events like a car wash, bake sales, a walk-run, returning so-

da bottles. Some of the younger students are doing chores in order to earn funds for the cause.

“We had people put across our path who are in great need of things that we have so easily,” Willard said, adding that the students were moved by this notion. “They really wanted to help when they heard about this situation, and I just wanted to help them achieve their goals to help the people in Uganda who are in need.”

To donate, checks can be made to Saint Anthony of Padua Church, with St. John’s Medical Clinic in the notation, and mailed to the religious education department at 20 Cheshire Place, East Northport.

100 Students Turn Reporters At Mock Press Conference

State assemblymen Andrew Raia and Chad Lupinacci held a mock press conference at the South Huntington Public Library last week, drawing students from Brennen High School, Brentwood High School, Deer Park High School, Half Hollow Hills High School West, Huntington High School, John Glenn High School, North Babylon High School, Walt Whitman High School and West Islip High School.

Around 100 students hailing from the various school districts across the Town of Huntington learned what it means to be a reporter last week as state Assemblyman Chad A. Lupinacci (R-South Huntington) and state Assemblyman Andrew P. Raia (R-East Northport) hosted a mock press conference in Huntington Station.

Students from schools including Half Hollow Hills High School West, Huntington High School, Elwood-John Glenn High School, and Walt Whitman High School joined the assemblymen at South Huntington Public Library to experience what an official press confer-

ences entail.

Lupinacci stated that he hoped the event peaked the students’ interest in the media, government and journalism.

“Should they chose to pursue a career in the media, I wish them the best of luck,” he added. “I was asked very good questions today and it’s important these students understand that a strong press is crucial to accountable and transparent government.”

Raia added, “To watch a press conference on television is one thing, but to be able to ask questions and interact with the speaker is a completely different experience.”

Moving Home From College (NAPSI) – As Walt Whitman is quoted in numerous graduation speeches as having said, “Not I – nor anyone else can travel that road for you. You must travel it for yourself.”

However, as most graduates have discovered, the first place they have to travel is probably away from school.

Whether you’re going back to your parents’ place, your new grad school housing or a place of your own (with or without roommates), you have to get all your stuff there. Here are five hints on how: 1. Order the right truck in advance.

For most students, a 12- or 16-foot truck will do. Bear in mind, you’re not the only one moving out. Try to reserve the truck and any accessories – boxes, packing tape, bubble packing material, moving blankets, hand trucks and so on – at least two weeks

in advance.

2. Familiarize yourself with the truck. Learn what all the switches and gauges do. Adjust the seat and side mirrors. Be aware that trucks have oversized blind spots and are tougher to turn than a car.

3. Read the rental agreement. Note that the U.S. Department of Transportation prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” You can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like.

4. Pack a separate travel bag. Put in any items you may need in a hurry: paperwork, credit cards, identification, a change of clothes, medicine, drinks and snacks 5. Find a travel companion.

With worldwide success, and a career that spans more than 50 years, singer and actress Olivia NewtonJohn has sold more than 100 million records and produced over 15 Top 10 singles during her rise in the entertainment industry.

Known widely for her role in the successful movie musical “Grease,” where she starred opposite actor John Travolta, the English-born talent basked in the national spotlight thanks to the popularity of the 1978 film, and quickly found herself rocketing to super-stardom.

Now on a solo tour that’s set to take her to Asia this summer, the pop icon will first be performing at select clubs in the states, including a April 21 date at The Paramount in Huntington village.

Having moved to Australia with her family as a 5-year-old, NewtonJohn got her big break after winning a televised talent contest on the TV show “Sing, Sing, Sing,” which earned her a prize-winning trip to London.

It was during her return to the United Kingdom that the singer partnered with friend and Melbourne-based musician Pat Carroll to create a double act dubbed “Pat & Olivia,” which took the duo on tour at army bases and venues throughout Europe and the U.K.

‘Grease’ Star Celebrates 50 Years In Showbiz

Singer, actress and health advocate Olivia Newton-John takes her act on the road, delivering fans material spanning her more than 50 years in the entertainment industry. Catch her live at the Paramount April 21. during the ’60s.

Her debut album, “Let Me Be There,” released in the U.S. in 1973, producing the singer’s first Top 10 single, and earning her accolades from the Academy Of Country Music as “Most Promising Female Vocalist,” and a Grammy Award for “Best Country Vocalist.”

Since then, Newton-John has won a total of four Grammy Awards, numerous Country Music, American Music and People’s Choice Awards

and 10 number one hits, including “Physical,” which topped the charts for 10 consecutive weeks.

In 2015, she collaborated with daughter Chloe Lattanzi, releasing the single, “You Have To Believe,” which topped the Billboard dance club songs’ chart at number one.

Outside of the entertainment industry, Newton-John served as Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Environment Program; was the co-founder of Children’s Health

Environmental Coalition; and her personal triumph over breast cancer in 1992 led to the creation of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre (ONJCWC) in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia.

April Winds And Swift Seas Precede May Flowers

By Henrietta Schavran So goes the old saying: “April showers bring May flowers.”

This year we have been experiencing more than the usual share of April winds with or without April showers. Each time the 40-plus gusts of wind subside and calm intervals of pleasant weather return, boaters eagerly begin to make plans for the coming boating season, only to be greeted by a new profusion of howling winds.

At our local yacht clubs and marina, shrink-wrapped boats have impatiently huddled quietly awaiting the coming of spring, Instead, some

boat owners discovered that Mother Nature decided to unwrap some vessels by sending 50-mile-per-hour winds from the northwest that literally tore off entire or large sections of shrink – wrap off the vessels, leaving them victim to rains and even snow that we experienced in early April.

In looking through early records of April weather, there were accounts of bitter storms in our area that caused tremendous havoc and destruction going back centuries.

The waters of Long Island Sound in the area of Eatons Neck were partic-

ularly prone to stormy spring weather patterns that anticipated some of the climate conditions we are feeling this year.

The year 1883 stands out as a particularly bad spring, which produced brutal April storms at sea. On April 11, 1883, not one, but four vessels were shipwrecked during heavy storms in the waters off Eatons Neck. These were The Copy; The Oscar F. Hawley; The Marietta Smith; and The Stella Day. A decade later, on April 14, 1896, The International was shipwrecked off Eatons Neck.

U.S. Life Saving Service worked with primitive equipment and gear to try to rescue crew and passengers of shipwrecked vessels. They risked their lives to reach victims in stormy seas and dangerous winds, never knowing if they too would become victims to the seas.

Today vessels are equipped with electronic and mechanical equipment to help survive dangerous sea conditions. Fortunately, too, our Coast Guard is always ready to assist in rescue operations to avoid the unexpected April disasters of an earlier time.

Meantime, recreational boaters patiently accept the winds of April and look forward to May for fair winds and calm seas.

Thunderbirds Rout Tigers For 2nd League Win Maya Chinquee tossed five innings and struck out five on Friday to lead Half Hollow Hills East 15-2 over Northport in Suffolk League II play.

Chinquee notched her first win of the season for Hills East, which improved to a record of 25 in league play this season. Chinquee also went 2-for-4 from the plate, including a triple and three RBIs to lead the Thunderbirds.

Hills East also saw contributions from Kristen Ulmer, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI; Angela Scurti, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs; and Jordan Russo, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

The win was Hills East’s first in league play since a 10-0 win over Central Islip on March 29.

In that game, Umler pitched five innings and struck out eight to lead the Thunderbirds.

At the plate, Gabby Field went 1-for-1 and hit her first home run of the season. Russo also went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a walk.

In non-league play, the Thunderbirds fell to Centereach on Monday 3-0, with Chinquee suffering her second loss of the season.

Centereach was fueled by Julianna Gamble and Lindasy Ness who combined for their team’s 3 RBIs. Centereach improved to 7-1 on the season with the win.

Next up for Hills East, weather permitting, is a non-league game against Sachem East slated

The Thunderbirds fell 3-0 against Centereach on Monday in a non-league showdown. for 4:30 p.m. at High School East.

The Thunderbirds will get back to Suffolk League II play on Saturday at 10 a.m. when they’re scheduled to face Copiague. This will be

the two sides first meeting of the season. Copiague (0-5) had yet to win a game as of deadline Tuesday.

Suffolk tables proposed plastic bag ban after resistance (Continued from page A1)

Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer (D-Centerport), who proposed the ban, said Monday that the legislation was tabled in the legislature’s health committee during its April 7 meeting at the request of the legislature administration, and some of his colleagues.

The proposed ban was scheduled to be voted on at the legislature’s scheduled April 12 general meeting,

which occurred after deadline.

Trottere said he met with Spencer on April 13 to discuss alternatives, and seek a middle ground. Trottere contended that plastic bags make up a small part of the overall waste stream.

“While plastic bags are part of the problem, they make up a very small part of litter in general,” he said.

As it stands now, the proposal would ban thicker varieties of plastic bags, which Poly-Pak produces and are primarily intended for retail use.

Spencer said he’s mainly targeting thinner plastic bags, typically

used at grocery stores, since they they break down easily, but do not decompose well. This makes them prime targets for wildlife, who may easily consume them, as opposed to thicker bags, which they would find less appealing, Spencer said.

Trottere, of Greenlaw, said his meeting with Spencer yielded “a very positive discussion.”

“He was interested in our position, in the facts that we brought with us. He’s very interested and concerned about the jobs that we have here in Melville,” Trottere said.

One alternative to the ban that Spencer floated was keeping the single-use plastic bags, but charging an additional fee for them.

However, Spencer said that there is still strong support for the bill and intends to get it back on the legislative track once compromises are reached. He said he’s aiming to ensure there are no “unintended consequences” if the bill were to pass.

Spencer added, “For something of this magnitude, I do think that to have a time to vet it and look at it is good government.”
