Gabby Giffords Leads Gun Control Rally

Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who survived a 2011 assassination attempt in which six people were killed, was guest speaker at a rally of gun control advocates in Dix Hills on Sunday. Giffords, who suffers motor impairment and difficulty speaking as a result of the shooting, walked into the room at Five Towns College to a standing ovation accompanied by her husband, Mark Kelly; Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington); and two women who had lost family members to gun violence.

The event was a campaign rally for Hillary Clinton, organized by Israel on short notice in advance of Tuesday’s Democratic primary vote. For any Democrats voting in the primary, for whom gun control is an issue, Israel wanted to point out that Clinton’s opponent, Bernie Sanders, has opposed gun control legislation.

For the past eight years, Steven Connolly, of Dix Hills, has raised around $16,000 for Friends of Karen, a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families.

Connolly, who is a father of two, first learned of the organization when his children were very young.

“I couldn’t imagine having to go through that, no matter how much help I was getting,” Connolly, 50, said. “After hearing what Friends of Karen did, it sucked me in.”

Hit And Run Suffolk police said a 47-year-old Dix Hills man was arrested for a hit and run at around 5:25 p.m. on April 14 on Wolf Hill Road and Carman Road. The man was driving a 1996 Toyota, crashed into a 2002 Ford Mustang and fled from the scene, according to police. He was pulled over a short time later, arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level of 1 percent, and for leaving the scene of a property damage accident, police said.

Break-In, Jewelry Stolen An unknown person burglarized an April Avenue home in Dix Hills at around 1 p.m. on April 14, Suffolk police said. A window was broken and jewelry was stolen, according to police.

Purse Stolen From Car Someone broke into a 2002 Ford Escape in the parking lot of Eastern Athletic Club on Ruland Road in Melville at around 12:40 p.m. April 12, Suffolk police said. A window was broken and a purse containing credit cards was stolen, according to police.

National Pretzel Day…Since it would seem that everything has a national holiday, it’s time to celebrate the opportunity to indulge in thick dough and high sodium. Of course, I’m talking about National Pretzel Day on April 26. I’m not sure if there are any specialty pretzel shops in the Town of Huntington, but I do know that there’s a place or two to grab one in the Walt Whitman Mall. So, for those out and about on Tuesday, keep an eye out for pretzel lovers. They might cause a traffic jam right in the middle of the mall. For those pre-determined pretzel lovers: Where is the best place to get one in town? Although I don’t understand why pretzels need a holiday, I do enjoy the occasional cup of pretzel bites with cheese dip, sometimes as I shop.

However, once I’m done stuffing my face, I immediately find myself scurrying for water to quench my thirst after all that salt.

A 29-year-old Deer Park man was arrested at the corner of Straight Path and Yorktown Road in Dix Hills for possessing marijuana at around 9:50 p.m. on April 15, Suffolk police said. The man was sitting in a parked 2014 Toyota Camry and had the marijuana in public view, according to police. He was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

Legislator: Halt Red Light Program jtantongco@longislandergroup.com

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) introduced legislation April 12 to suspend the county’s red light camera program that raked in just over $27.5 million in 2014, according to a recently published report.

Trotta argues that the program is not geared toward improving safety, but instead has increased certain types of accidents at some intersections across the county. Trotta called the program a “money grab,” through which the county is looking to secure revenue without having to raise taxes.

Comparing yearly averages, right-angle accidents, or T-bone collisions, at cameraequipped intersections in Suffolk were reduced by 21.6 percent, or from 176 before cameras were installed to 138 after, according the report published by the Suffolk Traffic and Parking Violations Agency.

The report is based off data provided by the state, according to county officials.

Similarly, accidents leading to injury decreased by 4.2 percent, from 481 to 461, on average.

Total accidents at camera-equipped intersections have decreased from 1,073 to 1,040, or by 3.1 percent, on average.

However, rear-end accidents at such intersections have increased 42 percent, from 302 to 429, on average.

Suffolk’s report shows that there are 17 red light camera-equipped intersections around the Town of Huntington, five of which are spread across Dix Hills and Melville.

The two in Dix Hills are at the intersections of the Long Island Expressway South Service Road and Deer Park Avenue, and the LIE North North Service Road and Commack Road. In Melville, there are three: one at the LIE North Service Road and Pinelawn Road, another at the LIE South Service Road and Route 110 and one at Pinelawn Road and Half Hollow Road.

At each of these in Dix Hills and Melville, except for the Melville intersection of LIE North Service Road and Pinelawn Road, right angle accident per year have decreased, on average.

Trotta claims that many of these violations come from illegal or rolling right turns at red light, however, Suffolk’s report did not provide such statistics. Margiotta said that approximately 70 percent of the citations have been issued because of turns at red lights, both for right turns and left turns.

The legislation proposed by Trotta last week intends to suspend the program indefinitely, allowing Suffolk to study the initiative further and “restore public confidence in the program.”

Trotta’s legislation will go before the legislature’s public safety committee May 5.

Paul Margiotta, executive director for the county’s Traffic and Parking Violations Agency, acknowledged the increase in rear-ends, but said the cameras may not have led to the spike.

Meanwhile, he said the drop in rightangle accidents outweighed that, explaining that those accidents tend to cause more injuries and fatalities.

“Going through the red light, you are more likely to be killed or seriously injured than smacking into the back of the car in front of you,” he said. “It could be concluded that not passing the red light and getting into a rear fender bender saves you from going through the light and get-

ting into a critical, if not fatal accident.”

In reference to Trotta’s proposal, Margiotta disagreed with the idea of suspending the program. Margiotta said that particularly problematic intersections should be examined, and independent professionals should be brought in for insight.

“I’d hate to see someone remove a camera from the program then have a fatal accident at that intersection,” he said. “If it was my family or friends and 4.2 percent of them now are not being injured, we’re going in the right direction.”

To manage Suffolk’s program, which was initiated in 2010, the county contracted Xerox State and Local Solutions to install the hardware and develop criteria that determines where cameras are placed.

According to a contract change dated Nov. 17, 2012, all new cameras built after that date must meet a minimum criteria of no less than 25 “video validated violations” in a 16-hour period. Regarding this change in the contract, Margiotta said it was chosen based on safety considerations to determine which intersections are the most dangerous ones.

In 2012, the county collected $292,168 from 3,951 citations. The next year, citations increased to 52,654, netting $4.88 million for Suffolk. According to most-recent data, citations rose again in 2014 to 321,009, yielding $27.52 million.

A mother “felt ecstatic” and was relieved to hear from her son on Friday after he was missing for three days.

Jason Geier, 17, of Dix Hills was reported missing April 12. He was last seen near 43 Arista Drive in Dix Hills. The report led Suffolk police to issue a silver alert since Geier has been diagnosed with AD-

HD, bipolar disorder and depression, and was potentially suicidal after going without medication for at least 24 hours.

However, “somebody with a higher power kept him safe,” Gail Mitgang, the teenager’s mother, said Monday. “I just heard his voice and that was enough for me to know he was okay.”

Missing Teenager Found In Brooklyn, Cops Say On Friday, Geier stopped in to 620 On Caton Pizzeria in Brooklyn and asked to use a telephone, Mitgang said. Geier called his mother and asked her to pick him up around 5 p.m., she said. He was unharmed, according to police.

“He’d never been to that Jason Geier area, he didn’t know where he was headed,” Mitgang said.

She thanked the staff at the pizzeria for allowing Geier to use their phone, especially given his “disheveled” appearance.

In an April 14 interview, Mitgang said her son also went missing two years ago, leading to a report filed with police. However, he was found a few hours later.

“He needed to get away from reality,” Mitgang said.

Geier is enrolled at Iris Wolfson High School in Greenvale.

For those living within the Halesite Fire District, the taxes for 2016 are $1.96 million – say $2 million.

By contrast, for the residents living in the Village of Huntington Bay, the 2015-2016 tax bill is $1.95 million. Almost all district residents paid Huntington School District taxes of $101.99 million in 20152016. For fiscal year 2015-2016 the Huntington Public Library tax

is $8.81 million. Town of Huntington 2015-2016 taxes are $44.30 million. The Town of Huntington’s share of the county taxes are $140.93 million. Town of Huntington taxpayers pay state MTA taxes of $526,380. Totaling $298.52 million. This doesn’t include the state.

Demonstrably, the Halesite Fire District budget is less than 1 percent of the total tax burden.

One of the lesser budgets – one of the most vital functions.

Our work force is more than 90 percent volunteer; comprising five full-time paid district staff, and 77 volunteer firefighters.

Following a recommendation from the Office of the State Comptroller in 2011, we identified our priorities, ordered our priorities, and developed a longterm capital spending plan. Part

of the plan was to update the original 1964 kitchen, which we did in 2015, after going to the public with the requisite mandatory referendum. The payments, both interest and principle, to redeem the bond are not exempt from the tax cap, even though spending the money was the express will of the people.

Unfunded mandates wreak havoc with our otherwise well thought out financial planning, and ought to be exempt from the tax cap because we have no control over them. Unfunded mandates are an irresponsible manner of dealing with an issue. When we had to come up with $42,200 for mandated bail out gear, it was a matter of robbing Peter to pay Paul in an already very tight budget. Where is the money supposed to come

from? When my wife’s 403(b) went down in value after the downturn of 2008, we had to ‘eat’ the loss. However, the district had an increase of $23,618 in payment to the State Retirement Fund to cover loss of value to that fund.

The state fell into a philosophical morass by placing a greater value on the contribution of one set of workers to society than that of other workers. The pain of the 2008 recession should have been shared across the board.

Many budget items are non-discretionary, and should be exempted from the tax cap. At $44,000 per year, we pay one of the highest hydrant rental fees on Long Island. The rental fees range from $0 in the Jericho Water District to the Suffolk County Water Authority at $225 per hydrant.

We have built up the physical plant and fleet of firefighting apparatus over the years, on the premise that the prudent man would insure these assets. We have complied with all the recommendations of our insurance carrier to limit liability. As our insurance premiums have risen subsequently, we need some relief in the form of a modification of the tax cap. In an attempt to control air conditioning, heating and lighting costs, we’ve replaced the original roof system incorporating a layer of ridged insulation, reducing utility costs. Following a PSEG audit, LED lights have been installed – yet we still have to pay electric and gas bills over which we’re powerless.

The state needs to pass, and you need to sign, the Ambulance Reimbursement Bill. When we initiated ambulance service in 1967, the crew only needed a Red Cross Advanced First Aid Card. Now we

pay for many hours of EMT training. We added a second ambulance in 1999. We have to carry more and more expensive medical supplies on the rigs with seemingly shorter and shorter shelf lives. To gain credit for our taxpayers under the property tax freeze, we entered into an agreement with the Centerport Fire District for the services of a paramedic, which procured a sophisticated form of pre-hospital care. This comes with a cost. Private ambulance services can recoup by billing insurance companies, the same capability should be afforded to fire department ambulance services.

All of this only addresses the current situation, not future expenditures looming on the horizon. For example, with all of this progress we are rapidly out growing our 1964 firehouse and need to expand after 52 years.

How will the state accommodate our need to expand?

Since our founding in 1901, generations of dedicated people have striven to secure and provide the most modern firefighting equipment and techniques, and emergency services. It would be immoral to degrade what has been accomplished over the years due to constrictions imposed on us by the tax cap. We are not the problem, give us the necessary accommodation.

‘Memphis’ Dazzles With Message Of Tolerance

The stage at John W. Engeman Theater was lit up April 7 as talented actors, singers and dancers portrayed “Memphis,” a musical based on true events that took place during the 1950s rock ‘n’ roll music

scene in Memphis, Tennessee.

The production, which runs at Engeman Theater in Northport through May 9, enjoyed a three-year stint on Broadway from 2009-2012, and earned four 2010 Tony Awards.

while the story depicted underground dance clubs and the emotional struggle to break racial boundaries. Characters rise to fame as music breaks the boundaries of difference, while bringing people together.

“I thought it was really well put together,” said Danielle Dimeo, of

Northport, who was in the audience.

“You could feed off their energy.”

Gipsy Kings: Pop Music With A Punchy Latin Rhythm SPOTLIGHT

Hailing from the south of France, the Gipsy Kings have embraced Spanish culture and delivered a progressive sound rooted in Latin soul, with songs influenced by flamenco, reggae and pop music.

The band first got its start performing on the streets, playing weddings and select festivals throughout France before releasing two albums in the early ’80s. Their first album, “Allegria,” and second, “Luna de Fuego,” released in 1982 and 1983 respectively, but both failed to strike a chord with critics.

Undeterred, the band, which was led by founding members Nicolas Reyes (lead vocals) and Tonino Baliardo (guitars), sought to make an impact. They soon found commercial success with their third release, a self-titled project boasting eight Spanish-sung tracks with four boom-

The release, which came in 1987, was Gipsy Kings first to reach a worldwide audience. It went gold across America, France and the United Kingdom. Since then, the band has amassed another 10 studio al-

bums, toured the world extensively and sold a combined 20 million records to date.

“Music has always been a passion,” Baliardo said. “Even after all this time, after all these years of touring and working, it has given us

so much.”

He added, “We have matured, we have developed in music, and it has been so good for us.”

The Gipsy Kings earned several Grammy nods for their work, which have appeared in the “Best World Music” category during the band’s years of writing and recording. But, in 2013, the band’s latest full-length effort, “Savor Flamenco,” earned Gipsy Kings a Grammy Award for “Best World Music Album.”

The strong familial tie that has bound the group and defined its musical identity is something that the Gipsy Kings founders hope will continue well into the future.

“We want to keep on making new music because it’s our life, it’s who we are,” Reyes said. “But I think there will be a time when we pass down the Gipsy Kings to our sons.”

As the story darkens, fearing for the lives of the characters, members of the audience wiped tears from their faces, reaching for tissues as they witnessed the realistic nature of racial issues during the time period.

A scene led by Gator (Jarred Bedgood), a character who has not spoken since his father was killed, delivers a strong message, one that has stuck with Bedgood.

Owned and operated by Nino Antuzzi and Kelley Danek since September 2010, this venue has been attracts diners looking for burgers, beers and unique fare.

In keeping with the menu, the ambiance inside Sapsuckers makes diners want to stay for a while.

Walking in, diners will notice a long bar that can accommodate around 18 patrons, either for drinks or meals.

Sapsuckers’ decor is minimalist, yet interesting, from the copper tin ceiling to the Audubon bird lithographs that line the walls. Even a wooden Sapsucker, or yellow-bellied woodpecker, is prominently displayed at the bar. Warm hues of browns and dark wood gives the place a relaxed ambiance, certain to put any diner in the mood to explore what Sapsuckers has to offer in a dining room that seats 26 diners.

Under the direction of Executive Chef Orlando Garcia, diners can dive into appetizers like Pupusas or corn tortillas ($12), Berkshire Baby Back Ribs ($13), Potato Pierogi ($13) and

Mac and Cheese ($12).

The Pupusas are crunchy and made with pulled Berkshire pork, mozzarella, vinegar slaw and tomato cilantro sauce. The crunchy texture of the tortillas combined with the tender pork and creamy mozzarella, makes the dish a medley of textures.

The baby back ribs are smoky and so tender that the meat falls off the bone.

The homemade potato pierogi are fried but not greasy. The filling in the pierogi is creamy and served with caramelized onions and sour cream.

This appetizer is sure to whet some appetites.

For mac and cheese lovers, Sapsuckers’ version will not disappoint. Made with elbow pasta, four types of cheeses (cheddar, parmesan, gorgonzola, and fontina), cream, truffle oil and topped with herbed bread crumb crust, the dish is a rich and creamy casserole perfect for any child, or child at heart.

Years ago, in a friend’s dance studio in Huntington, husband and wife Vic Skolnick and Charlotte Sky set up a 16mm film projector, which they borrowed from the Huntington Public Library. With it, they began the New Community Cinema.

“Initially there were no chairs so people had to bring their own folding chairs,” said Dylan Skolnick, son of the couple. “It filled a real need; it just kept growing.”

Today the cinema has grown to more than 10,000 members and found a more-permanent home at 423 Park Ave. where it resides as the Cinema Arts Centre.

Dylan Skolnick, whose father died six years ago, has since assumed the role of co-director of the CAC with Sky. Back in 1973, while in the dance studio, Vic Skolnick and Sky opened what was one of Long Island’s first major art house movie theater, creating a new community for those who loved film. They showed films on Friday and Saturday nights, typically to crowds of 30-40 people who would show up with their own folding chairs, Dylan Skolnick said.

Back then “you couldn’t see any independent films or documentaries or foreign films or classic movies, you’d actually have to get on a train go to Manhattan where there was a whole bunch of repertory theaters showing classic movies and theaters that specialized showing foreign films,” Skolnick, of Huntington Station, said.

The movement soon grew into a real organization, moving twice before landing on Park Avenue in 1976.

The cinema was turned in a nonprofit, and was stocked with its own equipment and chairs.

Today, at what is now the CAC, classic films, silent films and live music are still shown, but “now we’re more focused on new movies for the bulk of the program,” Skolnick said.

The CAC also has cinema for children, shows international films, documentaries and puts on a monthly special series, which this month features films based on the work of William Shakespeare, in honor of the 400th anniversary of his death.

The CAC holds three theaters, amounting to 494 seats. It also sports a Sky Room Café, allowing cinephiles the opportunity for lunch or snacks to go along with movies.

Skolnick said the CAC wants to give people “a home away from home.”

“We’re really rooted in the community in many ways,” he said, adding that the CAC shows films focused on education and other issues that interest the community. “It’s a

different feeling.”

The CAC typically brings in guest speakers pertaining to the films they show, such as actors, producers, directors and cinematographers.

Films shown at the CAC are determined by a 14-member board, as well as through audience feedback.

“We try to find a balance between great movies that must be seen, and also being responsive to the audience in what they’re looking for and what they want,” said Skolnick, who earned a bachelor’s degree in film and video from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.

The CAC is currently showing films like “Hello, My Name is Doris,” “Eye in the Sky” and “Demolition.”

“The audiences are great, wonder-

ful people and you make a lot of connections and friendships,” said Skolnick. “You hope over time that there’s some impact, that all the films we’ve brought into Huntington have helped expand people’s universe, and how they see the world.”

Next month, the CAC will host the Huntington High School Film Festival, which will showcase films made by high school students.

For the first time, the CAC will also participate in Art House Theater Day on Sept. 24. The national event promises to offer special content to CAC audiences.

Skolnick said, “As you get deeper into the world of movies, the art of movies, the fun of movies, you get the pleasure of sharing it.”

The CAC is open to the public, but individual memberships start at $50.

Discounts on memberships are available for seniors, students and those under 25 years old. Members are eligible for benefits such as discounts on tickets, discounts on special events and workshops, and discounts at local retailers and restaurants.

Over the years I have seen so many people who are underinsured and even not insured at all even though they have a spouse and children to be considerate of and to protect. There are so many types of policies covering so many scenarios.

General Liability Insurance: Every business needs this coverage, even if you work out of your home.

Property Insurance: If you own your building or have business personal property, including office equipment, computers, inventory or tools, you should consider a policy to protect if you have fire, vandalism, theft, smoke or water damage, etc. Think about business interruption/loss of earning insurance. What happens if you can’t operate and therefore not bring in income?

Business Owner’s Policy (BOP): This is a package that covers all required coverage a business owner would need. A BOP will include business interruption

insurance, property insurance, vehicle coverage, liability insurance and crime insurance. You can adjust the policy for what your company needs. Typically an owner will save money with a BOP because the bundle of services often costs less than the total cost of all the individual coverages.

Commercial Auto Insurance: This protects the company’s vehicles and can cover your work cars, SUVs, vans and trucks from damage and collision. Look into proper coverage if your employees drive their own cars for company business. You may get them covered under the BOP policy.

Workman’s Compensation: A policy that provides insurance to employees who are injured on the job. Policy can provide wage replacement and medical benefits. In exchange for this coverage the worker gives up their right to sue their employer for the incident. It is very important to have worker’s compensation insurance because it protects you and

Children Give Back Through Acts Of Kindness which is a nonprofit that provides services for low-income children and their families.

In addition, the children at the Early Childhood Center baked brownies and hand delivered them to the Huntington, Huntington Manor, East Northport, Northport, Greenlawn, Centerport, Cold Spring Harbor and Halesite fire departments.

As for the 4-year-olds at the school, they visited the Atria Senior Living in Huntington Station where they sang five songs to the residents.

“I can’t even tell you how moving it was, the residents were so happy,” Brown said. “On their last song, they sang ‘God Bless America’ and the residents were welling up with tears, clapping and smiling.”

The children also passed around cake to the residents while interacting with them.

“They really brought a lot of joy to their lives and then they kind of gave it back to the kids also because the kids were so happy that they were making other people happy as well,” Brown said.

She added, “It’s just a way to thank our community members, but also to teach our children about doing kind acts for people and appreciating what people do for you.”

For the last two months, children enrolled at Huntington Jewish Center’s Early Childhood Center have been getting out into the community to participate in random acts of kindness.

“I wanted to get the children to learn about their community, and to extend the acts of kindness out of just our school,” said Ilene Brown, director of Early Childhood Center, which is a school for children beginning at age 12 months, and continuing through kindergarten age. “My goal is for them to learn to help others and to be kind.”

There are around 80 children in the school, which is located at 510 Park Ave. in Huntington.

Brown, of Huntington, said the 2year-olds at the school collected books, and decorated and laminated bookmarks for a pediatric oncology unit at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park.

Meanwhile, 3-year-olds collected boxes of books and gently used toys to donate to CCMC, and also made picture frames and necklaces that they sold at the school. They raised around $190 to purchase boomboxes and CD’s for the Huntington Station branch of the Head Start program,

Children enrolled in the Huntington Jewish Center’s Early Childhood Center dropped off brownies to the Huntington Fire Department as part of their random acts of kindness movement.

Brown said the movement, which began in February, also educates the children on character.

“It’s given them a sense of happiness as well because they’re doing something kind for others which in turn helps them feel good about themselves,” Brown said. “They’ve just learned so much talking to the seniors, people in the community and people in the firehouses.”

And it isn’t done yet.

The children plan to raise funds for the Whip Pediatric Cancer campaign, which was started by a Melville teen as an effort to raise awareness for pediatric cancer and raise money for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. The children Early Childhood Center will be doing the “whip” and “nae nae” dances on May 11 in order to support the cause.

Two Town of Huntington summer camp programs netted around $10,000 in donations though a fundraiser hosted last week.

For decades, the town-run Project P.L.A.Y. and St. John’s Camp have provided a safe and enjoyable summer experience for thousands of needy children throughout Huntington. The full-day camps, conducted free of charge for nearly 300 children annually, feature nutritious meals, games and activities, field trips and educational programs. All expenses, including meals, are covered by a town appropriation and a New York State grant.

The town’s Parks and Recreation Department held the fundraiser April 13 at Crestwood Manor to raise additional, private funds to supplement the summer camp experience for the hundreds of underprivileged children who otherwise would be unable to attend summer camp.

Petrone, on behalf of the town, presented a plaque to Breland, who was an instrumental part of the early success of Project P.L.A.Y., serving as the camp’s director for decades. She was also an advocate for the camp, pressing to ensure that the children’s needs

were addressed.

Breland was born and raised in Huntington, graduated from Walt Whitman High School and is a lifetime member of the NAACP and a member of the Kiwanis Club and the National Council of Negro Women. For the past 39 years, she has volunteered with the

Community Food Council and Youth Development Association, delivering food packages and providing needed transportation. She is the mother of four children and has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Cuthbertson presented the plaque to St. John’s Church. For years, the Cold Spring Harbor-based church has provided funding to benefit the children who attend St. John’s Camp, which is open to children ages 4-6. The church participates with Habitat for Humanity and in the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative, which provides shelter and food for the homeless. The church runs a “grow to go” garden that grows food and distributes it to the needy. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, parishioners partnered with an Episcopal school in a remote Haitian village to aid in the recovery effort.

Over 100 people attended the $75-aplate dinner, which also featured raffles, door prizes and a silent auction.

Sponsors included Friends of Northport, the Rotary Club of Northport, Medical Arts Radiology and the Joseph Randall State Farm Insurance Agency.

The Melville Fire Department installed a new slate of officers last week during its 69th annual Inspection and Installation of Officers dinner.

The ceremony, which was held at the Carlyle on the Green at Bethpage State Park on April 10, saw each of the officer receive an official New York State Assembly Citation.

State Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci state, “On Long Island, volunteerism forms the bedrock foundation of the fire service. Every day, men and women from all walks of life step up and freely offer themselves in service to their neighbors.”

He added, “I applaud each of the new officers who were sworn in to lead the Melville Fire Department, and I congratulate them and their colleagues for their courage and community spirit.”

Gifford’s husband, Mark Kelly, noted that there are 30,000 deaths per year related to gun violence, adding that “last year was the first year that more children died from gun violence than from auto accidents.”

Sanders, he said, voted against the Brady Bill and various amendments, five times as the senator from Vermont, he added before turning the microphone over to his wife.

“I’m here to tell you about Hillary Clinton… She will stand up to the gun lobby. Speaking is difficult for

me, but come January, I want to say these two words: ‘Madame President,’” Giffords said to enthusiastic applause.

Giffords and Kelly have become active advocates for gun control since the congresswoman retired from the House. They were joined at Sunday’s event by Rita Kestenbaum and Marie Delus, both Long Islanders who have lost family members to gun violence. Kestenbaum’s daughter, Carol, was killed in 2007 by her college roommate’s exboyfriend, who also killed the room-

mate and himself in a campus shooting at Arizona State University.

Delus, a Marine Lance Corporal, said her nephew was shot fatally as he was taking his girlfriend to lunch in Queens. Although she qualified as a Marine sharpshooter, and believes in the right of responsible gun owners to own firearms, “I do not keep a gun in my house. I am going to vote for the person who’s going to do what’s right,” she said, adding she feels background checks and controls on automatic weapons do not infringe on anyone’s Second Amendment

rights.

A host of Democratic politicians attended the political rally, including Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone and Huntington councilmembers Mark Cuthbertson, Susan Berland and Tracey Edwards, and Suffolk legislators Steve Stern and William “Doc” Spencer. Former congressmen Gary Ackerman and George Hochbreuckner also attended.

North Salem-based organization 10 years ago. Friends of Karen, which also has offices in Port Jefferson and in Manhattan, provides financial and emotional support for families with critically-ill children in the New York tri-state at no cost.

Two years after joining the nonprofit, Connolly participated in one of its annual events, a walk-run, which is the event he’s raised money through ever since.

“It really blew me away because I found out I was going to be running about a week and a half before the run and I was panicking,” Connolly said, thinking to himself “How am I going to get sponsors? Nobody is going to

sponsor me?”

He continued, “I sent out a bunch of emails and I was blown away at how many people responded.”

As the president and CEO of his own company, Co-Source Solutions, a Melville based accounting and finance firm, Connolly said he gets about 50 to 60 clients and friends to sponsor him for the event, raising approximately $2,000 each year.

Connolly, a Dix Hills resident for 23 years, has been part of the Friends of Karen's advisory board for about nine years. He is now the race director for the annual walk-run, recruiting participants and sponsors for the event. Last year, the event raised around $200,000.

This year, the event will be comprised of a 5K walk-run, a 10K and both a half and full marathon, which will be held in Nassau County next weekend.

“Every time you hear a story about a family, and what they go through with their baby that has cancer, it just blows me away,” Connolly said. It “makes me realize how fortunate I am, so I better find the time to give back and help support those people.”

Connolly’s family, wife Janet and two teenage sons Matthew and Christopher now also volunteer with Friends of Karen.

Connolly’s sons are going to run with him during this year’s 10K, the first time they’ll do so. He’s also

bumped his fundraising goal up to $3,000.

And he’s looking for more recruits, too.

“I’m going to do what I need to do to get as many people involved and get as much exposure as possible,” he said.

To register for this year’s event, or support a runner, visit Walkrun2016.kintera.org. The 5K walk-run (open to ages 6 and up) will be held at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale on April 30.

The next day at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, participants ages 14 and up can join in for the 10K; and ages 16 and up can register for either a half or full marathon.

Although his team started off sluggish, Half Hollow Hills East boys lacrosse coach Gordon Hodgson said the Thunderbirds eventually dominated the William Floyd Colonials on Friday, managing a 13-5 victory.

Hodgson, who noted that his team endured a tough three-game week that also saw wins over Sachem North and Smithtown West, said Hills East’s coaching staff “expected the players to come out a little sluggish.”

In order to overcome that, “we had to focus… and we had to be ready to go.”

The Thunderbirds did strike first, maintaining a 1-0 lead early in the first period, eventually growing it to 5-2 by halftime. Hills East then exploded in the third period with six goals, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Wulforst was recently moved from middie to attack due to an injury to Ryan Doran, a junior attacker who broke his wrist last week.

“Joe is a very talented player, a five-year varsity player, so you expect your experienced players to be able to pick up the slack,”

Hodgson said. “He delivered and he had a good game.”

Elsewhere, Andre Gomez, senior middie, scored twice; Sean Lulley, junior middie, scored two goals and dished out three assists; and Joe Tesoriero, senior attacker, scored two goals and added an assist.

Meanwhile, Anthony Cappadona, junior middie; Rich Hogan, senior middie; Drew Martin, sophomore middie; and Mike Monitto, sophomore middie, each scored one goal for Hills East.

Senior goaltender Andrew Yoli recorded nine saves for Hills East.

Hodgson said Yoli is also a converted middie. He “created scoring opportunities” for the Thunderbirds throughout the game.

Also recording a save for Hills East as an eighth grader was Evan Stallone.

The Thunderbirds were scheduled to host the Bay Shore Marauders after deadline on Wednesday. On April 26, they’re scheduled to visit West Islip to face the Lions. Game Time is slated for 4 p.m.

Boom, boom, boom, boom.

Four blasts, including two home runs, in a sixrun fourth inning lifted Hills West past West Islip last Thursday, 8-6.

The two teams were deadlocked at 0-0 before Frank Tricamo stepped to the plate in the top of the fourth with one out. The senior scorched a ball over the left field fence to give Hills West a 1-0 advantage in the Suffolk League IV game.

Next, Matt DiBella singled, bringing T.J. Anatra to the plate with two outs. The junior blasted a ball toward the short porch in right field at West Islip High School, banging off the top of the tall fence. DiBella advanced to second on what amounted to a loud single by Anatra.

Then, it was Ethan McMenamy’s turn. He roped a ball into center field, which was misplayed by the West Islip defender and led to a bases-clearing error as the ball bounced to the outfield wall. McMenamy, a sophomore, came all the way around the bases to score on the play.

He finished the day 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Capping off the inning, Sean Leguernic was driven in by a two-run home run that was blasted off the bat of senior Lucas DiGiorgi.

West Islip (7-2) did eventually respond, but Hills West ultimately held on to come away with the 8-6 win. Junior pitcher Brad Camarda was awarded the win for the Colts, his fourth of the season.

The win was Hills West’s second in the threegame series with West Islip. Hills West has won each of its three series to start its league season, also taking two-of-three from Huntington and North Babylon.

Hills West (6-3) trailed only West Islip in the league standings as of deadline Monday. The Colts were in a three-way tie for second place with North Babylon and West Babylon.

The Colts were scheduled to begin another three-game series with Centereach on Tuesday.

The second game of the series was slated for Wednesday. Tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. the final game of the series is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the Baseball Heaven complex (350 County Road 101, Yaphank).
