Raia Now Longest-Serving Town Clerk cmellides@longislandergroup.com

Jo-Ann Raia celebrated her 34th year as Huntington town clerk this month, making her the longest-serving town clerk in the Town of Huntington’s 362-year history.

Raia, 75, grew up in Brooklyn, but remembers her summer visits with family in Huntington very fondly.

Before moving to Huntington Raia worked at Herman Schwabe Inc., a leader in die-cutting machinery for the footwear industry. She says that her nine-year experience at there and the skills she developed helped prepare her for public office.

“When I worked there at Herman Schwabe, they put me in charge of a lot of things, so it’s hard for me to say what my official title was,” Ra-

ia said. “I was left in charge of production, I worked in importing and exporting and I helped with company finances in accounting.”

“That job helped give me a broader background,” she added.

In the late 1960s, Raia and her husband bred German shorthaired pointer, and their veterinarian at the time happened to be the vice chairman of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce.

“He was very involved in politics, so I remember he had asked me if I would help him out. He ran for supervisor and he was defeated. He ran for councilperson and he was defeated. But I found it interesting learning more about how politics works in government,” Raia said It was later that former Huntington Councilman Jack Dolan suggested

PD: Sanitation Worker Killed By Garbage Truck Carter identified the man as Jose Molina, who he said worked for the town’s sanitation contractor, Jody Enterprises of Babylon Inc., for more than five years. The driver was Jose Arroyo, Carter said.

Jeep Strikes Tree, Flips Onto Side

Melville Fire Department and Suffolk police work on a black Jeep Patriot Saturday morning after the driver struck a tree on Wintergreen Drive and the vehicle overturned.

A Jeep overturned in Melville early Saturday after the driver struck a tree, fire officials said.

Suffolk police and the Melville Fire Department responded to the crash on Wintergreen Drive around 10 a.m.

Officials said the driver of the black Jeep Patriot, a young woman, suffered serious injuries and was transported by the Melville Fire Department Rescue Squad to Huntington Hospital for treatment.

Assistant Chief Paul Mahler operated the rescue for Melville Fire Department, which dispatched an ambulance, first responder, paramedic and fire police unit.

The Northport Cow Harbor United Soccer Club was looking forward to hosting its first game of the season earlier this month at the Northport Soccer Park, but the game was canceled after vehicles churned out $10,000 in damage turning circles on the turf.

Jennifer McGraw, a director at the Northport Cow Harbor Soccer Club, said a lot of the young players were disappointed about the state of their field and the cancellation and, in some cases, relocation of more than 15 games this season.

“Everybody is really, really upset because it was the opening season for soccer,” McGraw said. “It brought our soccer season to a screeching hault.”

David Bozett, president of the Northport Cow Harbor Club, said that the incident is unlike anything he’s ever seen.

“Those fields are the centerpiece of our soccer club,” Bozett said. “The vandalism that occurred is something that really hasn’t happened before.

It certainly raises our awareness for securing the area for future events of this kind just because of the recklessness that was done.”

Bozett said at least two sets of tire tracks were

identified on the field.

“Because of the rain the night before the turf was terribly soft and whatever vehicles they were using were probably low-riding vehicles,” Bozett said. “They tore up paths in about half of the fields, but then drove around the rest of it with less damage, but they certainly left a mark.”

Bozett said soccer clubs and leagues across the Island have already donated $6,000 to offset the cost to rebuild the turf on the privately owned soccer field through the Long Island Junior Soccer League.

Additionally, other soccer clubs in the area are allowing Northport Cow Harbor to use their fields for make-up games that were due to be played at Northport Soccer Park.

“It shows the strength of the soccer community,” Bozett said. “But also I think it shows that this is an important part of the Long Island sports community in terms of the amount of teams and players that play junior soccer.”

Despite all that his club has received in donations and support, Bozett said the park will not likely be to open before the start of next spring.

Police say that they have yet to identify those people responsible, but that anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

A 17-year-old man was arrested in Melville Sept. 14 after allegedly fleeing from a parking lot at 360 Walt Whitman Road, where he was asked to leave by a security guard he threatened with a shovel. The man was arrested a few miles away from the lot at Earl Road at 7:30 p.m. and was slapped with a second-degree menacing charge.

Smashed Car Window On Sept. 12, police received a report of a smashed window on a 2014 Nissan Rogue.

The vehicle was parked in the driveway of a Dix Hills residence, and the incident was believed to have occurred at around 1:30 a.m.

Stolen Wallet Workout A man reported that his wallet was stolen from a gym locker located inside the Adecco office building at 175 Broadhollow Road in Melville. The incident was believed to have occurred Sept. 14 at about 12:30 p.m.

Stone Ridge Estates Readies For Phase Three With support from residents of Stone Ridge Estates in Dix Hills, developer Steven Klar is ready to move forward with constructing phase three of the 55-and-over community.

Klar has brought a proposal before the Huntington town board that would turn an unoccupied 4.3acre property, directly north of the existing 76-unit Stone Ridge Estates, into an additional 40 units of housing. Stone Ridge is found on Deer Park Avenue north of the Upper Room Christian School just south of Ryder Avenue.

Currently, the property has structures at its western-most front, which borders Deer Park Avenue, and is barren to the east.

Klar’s representatives said during a Sept. 16 public hearing that the new units would range from 1,200-1,900 square feet and a 1,000-square foot clubhouse would also be built. Five affordable housing units would be included.

“We hope we’ve come up with an idea that will make this community complete,” Klar, president of the East Meadow-based Klar Organization, said during the hearing.

For Klar to move forward, the town must approve a zone change, the focus of the public hearing. There, Stone Ridge residents come out to support the developer and proposal.

“This is the best use for this property,” Jean Simeone, a resident, said. “The community is all looking forward to the project.”

She added, “I’ll be very happy to get rid of the shacks and the old buildings and the weeds and everything else next door.”

Two other Stone Ridge residents were also in favor, including Michael Katz, who praised The Klar Organization for its work in the housing community.

“We’re looking forward for him to build our third section,” he said.

Huntington board members could make a decision on Klar’s proposal as early as the Oct. 6 town board meeting.

Board Eyes More Deer Controls After approving in-season, longbow deer hunting in Eatons Neck, the town board is eying further, “humane” measures to control deer populations.

Huntington town board members have scheduled an Oct. 6 public hearing to gather input on a proposed deer-management program that seeks to control deer populations around town with non-lethal measures.

“Everybody wants to be humane,” Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone said during a press conference after the Sept. 16 board meeting. “The more humane the situation we can have, the better.”

If approved, plans would include: installation of deer fencing, planting non-deer friendly foliage and implementing detriment

tactics, such as motion triggered lights and/or sprinklers.

No person would be permitted to “engage in, or encourage” feeding of deer. Those who violate the article could be fined up to $1,000 for a first offense.

Town board members also approved a resolution during the Sept. 16 meeting further establishing that no person is permitted to hunt in town-owned parks, even under the new in-season longbow deer hunting permissions.

For hunters with a valid hunting license from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and a bow hunting license, Suffolk County’s deer bow hunting season begins Oct. 1.

On Minimum Wage, Proceed With Caution DEAR EDITOR: New York is already in the midst of a phased-in minimum wage increase that was approved by the state Legislature and signed by the governor.

Increasing the minimum wage to $15-an-hour would give New York State the highest minimum wage in the nation.

However, companies looking to succeed and grow here are currently dealing with among the highest costs of doing business in the country, and this proposal would dramatical-

ly increase their labor costs as well. Raising the wage floor in New York that far that fast could lead to unintended consequences such as severe job losses and negatively impact many businesses who are already struggling just to keep their heads above water.

In addition, this move comes less than six months after the governor himself dismissed a proposal by Democrats in the Assembly seeking to increase the state's minimum wage to $15-an-hour during state budget negotiations.

We need to proceed cautiously and deliberatively, and take a step back to

However, many dangers lurk in cyberspace, from bullying to financial scams, identity theft and terrorism and it is important to remain vigilant to cyber-security in your business and personal transactions on the internet.

I would like to warn residents of a new scam that has recently been occurring in our community. Phone calls from persons claiming to be affiliated with Microsoft or other technical support companies are offering computer “repairs” or seeking payment to validate accounts.

Area residents have received phone calls from callers claiming to be from Microsoft and offering to correct computer “problems.”

Scammers will ask for passwords, or advise residents to enter a given code, which enables scammers to gain control of the victim’s computer. Scammers may gain access to financial records and other vital personal information, and victims may be “locked out” of their computers. It is important to know that Microsoft and other computer companies never send unsolicited email messages or phone calls seeking passwords, credit card information, social security numbers or other personal data. You should

never disclose such information to anyone who contacts you. Hang up the phone immediately. If you have disclosed information to someone offering to repair your computer, you should immediately contact any financial institutions, stores and credit card companies whose accounts may have been compromised and report the potential fraud. Place a freeze on any bank or debit cards to avoid potential theft. Scammers may install malicious software or adware that may damage your computer. You should have your computer checked by a reputable repair person to be inspected for viruses and malware.

Many of us have received phone calls from people claiming to be from Microsoft or other companies seeking personal data or access to our computers. Legitimate businesses do not make phone calls or send emails or texts, soliciting personal information. Scammers try to scare or intimidate people into providing this information. It is important to remain vigilant and refuse to disclose personal information to unsolicited calls. The Chai Center in Dix Hills held services for Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement.

Tuesday night’s services included a candle-lighting ceremo-

ny, followed by a Kol Nidrei service. Services on Wednesday began at 9:30 a.m. and ended at 7:30 p.m. The day included junior congregation, Yizkor service, Neila closing service and Shofar and break-fast.

Serving as a Rabbi for 22 years at The Chai Center, located at 501 Vanderbilt Parkway, Saacks said that if prayers are done with sincerity, sins are wiped clean.

Classic cars, muscle cars, and roadsters were on full display during the show and awards were given out by the judges. The show was a fundraiser for Dix Hills Fire Department Co. 2.

More than 5,000 runners participated in the Great Cow Harbor 10K Run. RUNNING

A Moo-ing Good Race

In Northport, cowbells rang while spectators erupted into loud mooing between the waves of runners who sprinted past the starting line at the annual 10K run that marked the beginning of Cow Harbor Weekend.

The run, held on Sept. 19, is part of a long tradition is well regarded.

Runner’s World has named the Great Cow Harbor 10K Run as one of the top 100 races in the country.

This year’s race saw American participants from 41 states and numerous countries.

“It’s really great to see all the people coming down to support this run,” said longtime event volunteer and Northport resident, James Milano.

The 24-year-old has helped with the race since he was a kid, until he went away to college, but that something about the event keeps drawing him back.

“The course is beautiful, with lots of trees and just over the pit you get a nice view,” Milano said. “I’ve heard people say that they like the track because it’s hilly, and it is definitely scenic.”

The race hosted 5,000 runners, with twice as many spectators cheering them on, and encouraging the athletes to complete the course.

Northport resident Chris Hammer, 64, has lived in a small home located along the center of the race course for the past 20 years and says that she and her family look forward to the big event every year.

“We just love to sit here and cheer people on from beginning to end,” Hammer said. “It’s a great weekend.”

Hammer plays songs on her portable stereo by James Brown, Bob Marley and contemporary artists like OneRepublic to motivate the runners.

Looming overhead and swaying to the music is a rod puppet of a purple cow she created herself more than ten years ago that she controls from her stoop.

Hammer says that all four of her children have participated in the Cow Harbor Run throughout the years, and that this feat of athleticism is inspiring.

“I just tell people who are interested in participating that they’ll need to pace themselves and keep taking one step after the next,” Hammer said.

“I’ve never ran, but I’m truly inspired by how people do it.”

n’t until about 15 years ago that his daughter Charlene joined him on the track. “I think the crowd is terrific, and it’s a really good course,” he said.

The 69-year-old runner said that while the Cow Harbor course is good, running it isn’t without its challenges.

“It was okay for the first three miles today, but when the humidity set in, it was definitely a challenge,” Gusman said. “I wasn’t expecting that kind of heat.”

Gusman’s daughter Charlene, 43, says that running with her dad is a lot of fun and that they help support each other when they participate as a family.

“My dad has been running this race a little longer than I have, but I like joining him, we keep each other motivated during the race,” she said, adding that, “The atmosphere and seeing all of the people and the community coming together and running that scenic route is just a really great feeling.”

At Danyell’s, Staying Fresh, Yet Struggling

By Tes Silverman info@longislandergroup.com Across from the Engeman Theater in Northport is Danyell’s Kitchen, which serves up Mediterraneaninspired cuisine that is quite a departure from the previous establishment, Campari. Owner Danyell Miller took over Campari four years ago with the intention of creating farm-to-table menus that showcase more than just Italian cuisine.

Miller believes in supporting local artists by displaying artwork on the walls of her restaurant. In addition, she creates thematic events that combine art or music with a unique menu that highlights what’s available during the season.

Another incentive to dine here is the concept of “27 after 7”. After 7 p.m., patrons can dine on a threecourse meal for $27, which includes appetizer, entree and dessert.

Examples of what patrons could taste are appetizers like monkfish cake ($16), eggplant rustica ($20), butternut squash ravioli ($12) and sausage stuffed clams ($14) for starters. The monkfish cake is poached in champagne, which adds zing to its usual mild flavor while keeping its delicate texture.

Served over balsamic glazed portobello mushrooms, the fish becomes a complex dish that is quite filling for an appetizer. The eggplant rustica is grilled eggplant with tomatoes and served with pasta. The pasta is cooked al dente and with the eggplant’s spongy texture, creates a hearty dish that’s not heavy. The butternut squash ravioli is cooked perfectly and the filling has a tinge of sweetness from the sage brown butter, adding some creamy texture to it.

The sausage-stuffed clams are prepared with red peppers in a cream sauce which could easily be seen as a heavy dish, but is actually quite the contrary. The clams are quite fresh and the sausage is flavorful.

If you like salads, the beet, orange and tomato ($12) and summer panzanella made with tomatoes, cucumber, olives and prosciutto ($14) are the ones to choose. The summer panzanella is a hearty salad due to the olives and prosciutto. While the tomatoes and cucumber may seem bland in comparison to the olives and prosciutto, the combined ingredients bring out intense flavors.

Since Miller changed the restaurant’s name in March, she has gotten behind in the bills every week.

After holding its fourth annual burger contest, during which it accepted ideas for new menu items, it has narrowed the choices down to three burgers: “El Guapo,” an angus beef patty with chipotle Gouda cheese, fried onions, cherry pepper relish and avocado-lime crema; “Peace, Love & Bacon”, with candied bacon, caramelized onions, goat cheese and chipotle mayonnaise; and lastly, the “Down South,” with fried green tomatoes, bacon, pimento cheese and garlic aioli. The winner will be chosen by Facebook users and announced Sept. 22. The winner will win a $100 gift card to Zinburger, and the burger will be available Oct. 5-11.

Covering the soft rock swing of 1970s Top 40 radio can be hard, but members of Yacht Rock Revue make it look easy. The Atlantabased septet has been taking the stage by storm, performing each flower power-era tribute number as if it were their own.

Yacht Rock is comprised of Mark Cobb, Nicholas Niespodziani, Peter Olson, Mark Bencuya, Greg Lee, Mark Dannells and Dave Freeman The seven musicians are no strangers to the live music circuit -each of them has a history of performing in a variety of different music acts.

Interior designers agree that, when it comes to boosting the value of a home, the first targets for renovation should be the kitchen and bathroom.

“The most important thing is to modernize the kitchen and bathroom,” said Breth Donner, owner of Beth Donner Design Group in Huntington. In addition, decluttering and repainting a home can significantly benefit the selling price.

“Long Island is in a transitional period,” said Maria Previti, owner of Portico Tile & Bath Fixtures in Huntington. “It’s not overly traditional, but it’s not as modern as we see in New York City.”

Specializing in art and accessory coordination and selection, architectural services, lighting design, furniture selections, etc., Donner said that her clients are also looking for more of a transitional modern style, but “tempered with a retro-vintage spin on it.”

While debate rages on elsewhere about viability of solar power, Long Island households are increasingly taking to putting up panels on their rooftops as a way to conserve energy, save costs and reduce the carbon footprint.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority estimates that 41 percent of all solar panel systems in New York State have been installed on Long Island as of December 2014, accounting for just under half of the state’s solar energy consumption. For solar customers, monthly savings range from 20-50 percent, according to NYSERDA. This past December, Long Island had its 10,000th solar panel system installed, and it happened in Huntington, said David Glicker, a manager at solar panel system installation company, Vivint Solar, a Utahbased operation second to the Tesla Motors-backed SolarCity Corp in residential solar panel installation (Continued on page B10)

A 20-year Huntington resident, Glicker added that since he began working with Vivint’s Long Island offices three years ago, he has seen greater adoption of solar usage.

“Many of my neighbors have it, and many of my neighbors’ friends have it, it’s quite a network of people,” Glicker said. “It’s becoming like six degrees of separation from solar customers now, that’s what’s happening with the amount of solar going into our neighborhood.”

Last year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo

announced a $1 billion investment for the NY-Sun Initiative, a statewide project created to enhance the state’s solar economy and help growth of the solar market into a self-sufficient industry throughout New York.

In aligning with the NY-Sun Initiative to continue the pursuit for cleaner energy alternatives, Cuomo announced this month that he would launch an anaerobic digester project on Long Island that would convert food waste into clean energy as a means of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sup-

This energy reformation is one that Glicker and others in the clean energy industry are rallying behind and getting excited about.

With bathrooms getting very spa oriented, Donner said a lot of her clients love the all-in-one total toilet, with the heat seats and the bidet. Additionally, Previti said, another trend right now are large walk in showers.

Graphics are also on the raise when it comes to creating a visual appeal in the home. Patterns like herringbones and water jet patterns are becoming popular, along with pebble floors for the shower, Previti said.

Other popular flooring includes wide plank floors in the driftwood and bleached colors, which Donner said that floors seem to be getting a little lighter.

Lighter kitchens, such as white cabinetry, and under-mount sinks are also

on the raise, Previti said. In addition, popular counter tops are still granites, marble and man made quartz, with poured concrete on the advancing from New York City, Donner said.

“People want what they see in hotels,” she continued. “What I find interesting is that you’ll have a client that can be very modern but they always want their house to be warm.

Supervisor Proposes $189M Budget

Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone has proposed a near $189 million budget for 2016 that slightly reduces spending while increasing the tax levy by 1.3 percent, below the state’s tax cap.

The proposal calls for no new initiatives, but follows through on plans started in 2015, including the construction of Sweet Hollow and Burrs Lane parks, and the design and initial construction for the James D. Conte Community Center at the former Huntington Armory.

While overall spending will decrease by .2 percent, Petrone is proposing a $1.9-million increase for the highway department to prepare for potentially severe winter weather like the region had this past year.

That increase is offset by a reduction in spending in special districts, such as Commack Ambulance, Huntington Community Ambulance, Huntington Sewer and the Dix Hills Water District.

The town has 700 employees.

The tax levy would increase 1.3 percent despite a slight overall decrease in spending because the town would pull less from reserves to find operations. The increase for the average homeowner is projected to be $29.16.

Petrone said he had hoped to renew open space land acts and move ahead with establishing a parking district for Huntington village, but those moves would have required public referenda that would have to be added to the budget, in forcing the town to pierce the state tax cap.

He said he will be lobbying Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other state lawmakers for changes to the Tax Cap Act so that exceptions can be made for voter-supported referenda and has reached out to other municipalities around Long Island to wrangle their support.

“It’s probably our biggest concern this year – the tax cap,” he said.

For Rutika Gold, the owner of Antiques & Jewels On Main, it’s fitting that her last name represents a type of jewelry, since collecting and selling historic charms is something of an addiction.

From custom pieces like necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings the family-owned business, located at 293 Main St. in Huntington village, offers a variety of antique, estate and modern jewelry, along with sterling silver hollowware and flatware, Hungarian porcelain and paintings.

“My grandfather was a jeweler in

Budapest before the Second World War, so it’s in the history of our family,” said Gold, of Huntington, an amateur astrologer who offers patrons horoscope readings with a beaming smile.

After receiving a degree at Stony Brook University for jewelry making independent study, Gold worked in the Diamond District in Manhattan, taking jewelry classes.

Gold was 25 years old when she opened the store in May of ’79, and she has been on Main Street for 36 years. When her parents tried to convince Gold to open her store at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, she said it wasn’t for her, and that Huntington village was her calling.

“I always wanted to be in Huntington village,” she said. “I know everyone and everyone knows us, and we do everything we can for the town.” Along with selling its jewelry, Antiques & Jewels On Main also provides other services, such as custom designs, ear piercings, pearl stringing, ring sizing, re-

modeling and jewelry repair.

Owning the store with her husband, George Reisner, who she’s been married to for 35 years, Gold said that, between the two, they have been selling jewelry for more than 40 years. To fill their store with historic gems, Gold and they buy from auctions, people’s estates, and from traveling to other countries such as Spain, Turkey and France.

Through the Internet, which Gold said has opened up the world to them, the furthest they’ve sold jewelry was in Australia, marketing jewelry on websites like Ebay and Esty.

Their selection of authentic period pieces runs the gamut from the Victorian, Art Nouveau, Edwardian, Art Deco, Retro and Modern eras. Popular pieces among customers are vintage engagement rings from the 1920s, Gold said.

“It’s not mass produced; it’s finer pieces that you can’t find anywhere else. We have a saying in the business: ‘The time to buy it is when

you see it.’”

Serving the general public, along with local celebrities, singers, actors and athletes, Gold said she’s had customers in their early teens to in their ‘90s. “We are already on the second generation of customers who have grown up with us. Customers really become part of our family.”

Within the coming months, Gold is preparing for antique shows in Manhattan and Miami, where she will be showcasing a variety of jewelry from the store.

“Something that becomes an heirloom that you can pass down to your children, makes me happy,” she said. “Jewelry is something that you don’t need, you want, it’s a desire and I love coming to work everyday.”

Calling it “an opportunity to show people that they don’t need their car every day”, Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone kicked off the first of two Huntington Area Rapid Transit bus system “Fare-Free Weeks” by taking a ride on one of the buses himself on Monday in Huntington.

Petrone said he believes giving people a chance to experience the HART systems for free will give them the incentive they need to continue using it.

Plus, he said, people “really have nothing to lose but to try it.”

“Fare-Free Weeks” is running in tandem with International Car Free Day, an idea that has spread to over 40 countries and is celebrated annually on Sept. 22. Car Free Day acts to reduce car pollution, free the streets of vehicular traffic and help raise the bar for attitudes towards cyclists, pedestrians, and others who do not get around via their cars.

Several residents were on hand to experience the first day of “Fare Free Weeks”, and express their opinions on the HART system and the Car Free Day plan. In Huntington, the fare free weeks will be held Sept. 2126 and Sept. 28-Oct. 3 and available for all fixed-route transit on the HART system.

(Sept. 29, 1865) William Baxter of Huntington narrowly survived a severe carriage accident in September 1865. While coming out of a gate, an unfastened door swung back and got caught on the wheel of the carriage, knocking it over and throwing Baxter to the floor. Baxter’s frightened horse managed to get loose and ran a distance up the road before turning back. Dazed by the fall, Baxter didn’t notice the horse return and was struck. The accident was thought to have been fatal, but the report concluded by stating Baxter would recover.

Jo-Ann Raia now longest-serving town clerk (Continued from page A1)

Raia run for town clerk, knowing that the town clerk at the time, Kathleen Ferraro, was leaving the position to run for town board.

“He spotted me from the sidelines at the St. Patrick’s Day parade and explained to me what he had heard and suggested that I run for town clerk. I proceeded to tell him that he was crazy,” Raia said.

Following a divorce and a need to go back to work, Raia decided to run for the position and won. She started her first term in 1982.

In the years following that inauguration, Raia has consistently one every bid for reelection.

Her son, New York State Assemblyman Andrew Raia remembers his

younger years where he took notice of his mother’s work for the town and the pressures that came along with her title.

I think I was in ninth grade when she first got elected to office...and even back in the day she was the only government official that had her phone number publicly listed,” said the assemblyman. “She kind of served as the yellow pages back then for town services.”

Andrew Raia says he remembers his mother sitting at the kitchen table late into the evening and into the early morning working on various grant proposals.

“She was always very successful with getting grant money to build the archives and really make sure that the

town clerk office was really state-ofthe-art and the best,” he said.

Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone, who has been in his current position for 22 years, has known Jo-Ann Raia since before he got into office.

“She takes not only her professional responsibility seriously, but she takes her community responsibility seriously,” Petrone said.

Previously, the longest serving Huntington town clerk was Moses Rolph, who died in office in September 1838. His nearly 34 years in office set a record that stood until last week, when Raia’s tenure surpassed his.

Among Raia’s proudest moments was when she initiated a program in

1982 to issue commuter parking permits at the town’s four railroad stations, which was later updated to a fully-computerized renewal-bymail system that gained the approval of town commuters.

Her latest accomplishment is spearheading a town-wide project commemorating the 150th year anniversary of the end of the Civil War with programs this year that include exhibits, poetry and music events.

Additionally, a parade is planned as well as a re-enactment that will include rifle demonstrations.

“I like that the residents appreciate the fact that we provide as much services as we can,” Raia said. “I help everybody, I don’t check voter registration before I help somebody.”

The Colts of High School West’s boys soccer team have started the young 2015 season undefeated.

Through five games, as of press time Monday, the Colts sported a record of 4-0-1.

The latest win came Saturday after Hills West stormed back from a 1-0 deficit in the first half to defeat visiting Kings Park 2-1. John Behr, a senior, netted both goals for Hills West, as the Colts (3-0) maintained their one-game advantage in Suffolk’s League IV standings.

Behr and Dylan Chan, a sophomore, have been the scoring stars for the Colts so far, with both players netting four goals in five games.

The Colts started the season in dominating fashion as they traveled to East Hampton and defeated the Bonackers 6-1 on Sept. 4. Chan scored twice in that effort as Behr, Young Lee, Leo Musacchia and Noah Landow each chipped in a goal for the Colts’ non-league opener. Goalkeeper Hunter Goldberg, a senior, made three saves in the win.

Hills West did face a test, however, as the Colts took on the Bulldogs of North Babylon Sept. 8 in another non-league matchup. Both the Colts and Bulldogs are expected to be playoff contenders this season, after both teams reached the postseason in 2014. The two sides settled for a stalemate,

Colts Race To Undefeated Start

The Colts of High School West’s boys soccer team, pictured last season, are off to an undefeated start in 2015. though, as the game finished in a 0-0 draw.

From there, the Colts defeated Hauppauge 1-0 on Sept. 16 to start League IV play and then continued on to a 2-1 win over East Islip on Sept. 18.

After press time Monday, the Colts welcomed Eastport-South Manor (1-1) for another League IV game.

The Colts will be in action once again Friday as they travel to Bellport (1-1-1) for a 4 p.m. start.

After a 3-1 loss to North Babylon kicked off their season Sept. 4, the Thunderbirds of High School East’s boys soccer team responded with four straight wins, three of which came in Suffolk League II play to keep the boys in a tie for first place.

Hills East’s latest triumph came Friday as it defeated Connetquot 2-1 on the road in overtime. Despite Connetquot’s goalkeeper Dan Lewis recording 19 saves, the Thunderbirds were able to break through with 0:29 remaining in first overtime after Sam Steinberg, a junior, scored off a pass from Taylor Kaczynski, a senior. Senior Spencer Manus also scored for Hills East, his first on the season.

The win was the Thunderbirds’

fourth straight.

After falling on the road to North Babylon in non-league play 3-1 on Sept. 4, the Thunderbirds responded with a 3-1 win over West Islip on Sept. 7. Hills East then defeated both Copiague and Bay Shore in consecutive 3-0 victories in League II play.

Through the young season, Kaczynski has been an offensive star for Hills East as the senior recorded four goals and two assists through five games to lead the team in both goals and points. Steinberg has also been a force, netting two goals while dishing out three assists, a team high.

In the net, goalkeeper Jordan Lafauci has recorded two shutouts and allowing just one goal a game on average.
