Meet The Grand Marshal – Eugene Cook

At the Head of the Parade:

Eugene Cook is a self-made man who has worked his way up from his humble start as a welder to become the owner of a very successful business providing contracting services and building construction to municipalities, public institutions, private corporations and individuals. He has a working-class background and has a business administration degree from Nassau Community College. As a family man, he and his lovely wife, Lisa, who reside in Greenlawn, have five children, Danielle, Nicole, Monica, Brandon Olivia, and a granddaughter, Ella. Gene decided he wanted to give back to his community and help make changes for the betterment of the Town of Huntington. Eugene Cook decided to run for Huntington Town Board and accepted his oath of office as a councilman in January 2012. He is now serving his second four-year term. As a businessman, some of the proudest moments of serving his community have been the work that he has done with the veterans. He, with help from his fellow con-

tractors, recently worked to pave the Nathan Hale VFW Post 1469 parking lot on Pulaski Road in Huntington Station, at no cost to the veterans’ organization. The Post is also the longtime meeting home for the Huntington Ancient Order of Hibernians, organizers of the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. On a similar front, Gene also helped spearhead the effort to pave and stripe the Northport VA’s golf course parking lot at no cost to the Vets. Gene is an active Huntington AOH Div. 4 Hibernian who fully embraces their motto of Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity. In addition to marching annually in the parade with Division 4, he is also the parade emcee, a role that each year has him sprinting ahead of the Line of March, to announce the grand marshal. This year, there will be no sprinting, instead it will be Grand Marshal Gene Cook whose name will be called out from the podium, along with his aides: Kevin McCormick, Andrew Lawrence, Jon Lavertu and Jack Mulligan

Kailey Broderick began volunteering with the Huntington Hibernians when she was 8, has been a Wee Colleen and has marched holding the banner for Huntington’s LAOH. Now a senior at Harborfields High School, she has been part of the choir, band, Habitat for Humanity, Tri-fit, Spanish Club, section leader in the marching band and president of Global Justice while competing in three varsity sports: soccer, track and lacrosse. She has been named an All-League defender in soccer, achieved the league cham-

pions title and has been part of two teams that received the sportsmanship award. This past season she made it to Divisions for track and was ranked 26th in the county for the 55-meter dash. This year Kailey also received the Suffolk Zone award for physical education and leadership and received the John B. Grace Award at her school also for physical education. Kailey is an honor roll student and was inducted into National Honor Society as a sophomore. She loves to volunteer through school groups and especially for

K.I.D.S. Plus. Just this past year she gathered a group of people together to dye their hair blue for Autism Awareness Month. They raised money for K.I.D.S. Plus programs that have helped her brother, Sean. Kailey is extremely proud to say that she will be attending Adelphi University where she will be studying health and physical education with a specialization in adaptive phys ed. She will also be playing lacrosse and can’t wait to compete for the national championship as a Panther!

Meet The Colleen – Juliette Brown

Juliette Brown is the daughter of Division 4 Hibernian member and past Division 4 officer, Stephen A. Brown, and the granddaughter of past president of Division 4, the late Justice Harry Richard Brown. Juliette was a wee colleen when she was eight years old and is thankful to be a 2016 Colleen. She is currently a senior at Northport High School where she is involved in several clubs and activities such as Girls’Varsity Golf, Tour Choir and Buddy Club. Juliette has been involved in the high

school’s golf team since she was in 8th grade. When she was a junior she became number one on the team and became captain. She was selected for membership in the Northport High School Tour Choir in 10th grade and travelled to England and Scotland and sang throughout those countries. During her years in high school, Juliette has involved herself in clubs such as Buddy Club which is an after-school group in which other students with disabilities are encouraged to talk to their peers. of school, Juliette volunteers as a Safety Patroller for the Windham Mountain Ski Patrol along with her father, uncle, brother, sister and cousins helping people in need. She is a certified first responder and is trained in CPR and in using an AED. She was born in Huntington and has grown up in Laurel Hollow, with her parents, Tom and Karen, and her younger brother, Ben. Colleen was even was a Wee Colleen in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade back in 2007. One of her greatest qualities is her

desire to help others. She is a member of the Natural Helpers, a club that lets students seek help from other students with any issues they may face. She is a peer mentor to younger students and also the special education students. Colleen has a way that makes people feel comfortable and included. Hibernians Help Stock Food Pantries

Although the Huntington Hibernians’ focus this Sunday will be on the parade and celebrating Irish culture, the organization is also keenly aware of another piece of Irish history. The history of the Irish is not one of all harmony, peace and celebration. In most cases, the daily life for the Irish, in this country and in Ireland, was one of struggle and hardship. Through the many years of the Irish famine, “Great Hunger” and their never-ending fight for freedom and human rights, the Irish became even more committed to their families, friends and improving the quality of life in their communities.

Jack Ryan, AOH Charities & Missions Chairman, stated that each year Division 4 is a leading contributor to the area's eight local parish food pantries and when the call came in asking for Thanksgiving help, the Division as usual responded. “The Division has a long history of helping our local parish food pantries. Back in the ’90s, most of the work was done by a late brother, Jim Regan,” Ryan said. “When Jim passed away a few years ago, the Division decided to memorialize his work by formally creating the

Ancient Order of Hibernians JFK Div. 4, Huntington

Ancient Order of Hibernians, Div. 4, members periodically can be found outside area supermarkets soliciting donations for local food banks. Jim Regan Memorial Food Drive, not only continuing his work but greatly expanding it.” True to the mission of Friendship,

St. Patrick’s Parade in Huntington

O

n the second Sunday of March, tens of thousands of Huntington residents gather to celebrate the unofficial start of spring at the Huntington St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sponsored and organized by the Ancient Order of Hibernians John F. Kennedy Division # 4. This year, the 83rd edition of the parade, will be no different. On Sunday, March 12 beginning at 2 p.m. in Huntington village, we are proud to have our brother, Eugene “Gene” Cook, leading the St. Patrick’s Day Parade as the Grand Marshal. An entrepreneuring business owner and two-term Huntington Councilman, Gene will be accompanied by his honorary Parade Aides: Kevin McCormick, Andrew Lawrence, Jon Lavertu and Jack Mulligan. Following is the full complement of Hibernian brothers - the members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 4. Not far behind are the parades “Colleens” – Kailey Broderick, Juliette Brown and Colleen Curry, three talented and accomplished high school seniors who will receive a scholarship grant from the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 4.

F

or 83 years the St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been a wonderful family community event going all the way back to before the Depression when Finnegan’s was the gathering spot for the Irish workers. This Sunday spectators will

ST. PATRICK’S PARADE JOURNAL - SPECIAL TO LONG ISLANDER NEWS

have dozens of great pubs and restaurants in a vibrant Huntington village to choose from to enjoy the parade that would have been hard to imagine back in the 1930s. The parade is not only a great community event, but it’s also a tremendous catalyst to the local economy, with spectators packing the local restaurants, shops, and pubs throughout Huntington village. The core of the parade is, of course, the bagpipe bands, and no parade on Long Island can match Huntington’s lineup of bands from all over the Metro area. This year, there are 10 pipe bands, including the highly sought after NYPD Emerald Society Pipe & Drum Band, fresh off their gig playing at the Presidential Inauguration, and the Nassau County Police Emerald Society Pipe Band, among others. The St. Anthony’s High School Pipe and Drum Band, representing the next generation of bagpipers, returns for the fifth year. Of course, the Huntington High School Blue Devil Marching Band will be there along with the Walt Whitman Wildcat Band, Irish step dancers, antique cars, and numerous veteran, civic and youth groups. The Huntington Ancient Order of Hibernians will once again, as is their custom, march dressed in their gray morning suit tuxedos. “We take a great deal of pride in putting on the parade,” said AOH President Greg Kennedy. “We work hard to make sure the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a wonderful Huntington community event.”

St. Patrick’s Parade 2017

- A Grand Tradition For 83 Years

P

ast President Andrew Brady and Steve Fox returned as this year’s parade journal chairmen. “Many residents mistakenly think the Town of Huntington sponsors the parade each year,” Fox said. This is not the case. It’s actually the Huntington Hibernians who organize, promote, run and raise the money needed to pay for all the expenses associated with putting on this spectacular parade. Each year, the Hibernians go door to door soliciting donations from local businesses for advertisements which appear in this special St. Patrick’s Day Parade edition of The Long Islander newspaper. It is these generous ad sponsors that enable us to run the parade, so we hope folks support their businesses.”

A

lthough the AOH runs and finances the parade, Huntington town officials have always been very supportive of the AOH, AOH President Greg Kennedy said. “We have been very fortunate that each year almost all our local officials join us at our annual Grand Marshal’s Ball to kick off the parade weekend.” The ball – one of the major social events of the year featuring bagpipers, step dancers, a live band and plenty of dancing – kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at the Huntington Crescent Club on Friday, March 10. The Parade honors St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who converted the pagan Celts to Christianity around the year 430 A.D. St. Patrick founded the cathedral church of Armagh and it soon

T

became the center of the Catholic Church’s activities in Ireland. During his three decades in Ireland, he raised the standards of scholarship, encouraged the study of Latin and brought Ireland into closer relations with the rest of the Western Church.

he Ancient Order of Hibernians in America is a national Irish-American Catholic organization that was founded in New York City in 1836 and whose roots can be traced back to Ireland. The AOH is dedicated to preserving Irish heritage. Their motto is “Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity,” and a large portion of their efforts are devoted to charitable works. The Huntington AOH has raised tens of thousands of dollars for charitable organizations and notably is one of the leading donors to the town’s eight local parish food pantries. If you, or anyone you know, are interested in joining the Ancient Order of Hibernians, please have them call 631-261-8293. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at the VFW/AOH Hall at 210 West Pulaski Road at 7:30 p.m. The parade will kick off just north of the Huntington Train Station along New York Avenue before turning west onto Main Street and ending at St. Patrick’s School. It begins promptly at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12. Be sure to get into town before 1 p.m. when they start closing the roads and good viewing spots are gone. And don’t forget to “spring forward” – Daylight Savings Time kicks in Sunday morning.

THE SERVICE ISN’T WHAT IT STARTED OUT TO BE AT THE GIANT HOME CENTERS Poor Billy Bob. By now, everyone else has figured it out. The prices really aren’t so great, the selection is limited, and the service, well, let’s just say it isn’t what it used to be. That’s why more and more homeowners are back to shopping at their local stores. Here, consumers can get pleasant service, professional advice, and find quality products like VelveTop.
