Dear Friends,
The 2023-2024 school year was unique and memorable! After years of planning, LuHi advanced a full renovation of its 30,000+ square foot main classroom wing. The project required our community to be flexible and to “Stand Firm”, as our school year theme based on Ephesians 6:10-20 encouraged. Nineteen modular classrooms on the Middle Courts served as the main hub for teaching and learning. Daily walks up and down our main hill were enjoyable on most days but required patience on cold and rainy days. Construction inside the building continues to progress well, and the summer months will serve as a time for final checklist items heading into the fall.
Simply put, this project was an enormous step forward for LuHi. The decision to pursue such transformative work was not taken lightly, as our Board of Directors was actively involved with school administration in decision-making to achieve this key strategic goal. The cost of the project should be considered a critical investment in LuHi’s future. Premier, state-of-the-art learning spaces will differentiate LuHi in the competitive Long Island market. This wing will inspire both students and educators to innovate, question, experiment, and pursue excellence for decades to come. I am so eager to witness the impact that our new academic wing will have on our community!
Our bold work requires the prayers, generosity, and support of the LuHi family. Gifts and commitments to the Rise.Shine. Campaign have now surpassed $8 million towards a $15 million goal! I am humbled and grateful to those who have chosen to give to our exciting vision, as our current and future students are blessed by these gifts. Throughout this issue, you will read about unique student experiences, both locally and abroad (p. 8), learn how LuHi’s School Counselors guide our students to find the right “fit” for college (p. 16), and explore exciting updates about our winter and spring events including the Bob McKillop Invitational (p. 15), Connecting & Growing Trip (p. 26), 2024 Commencement Ceremony (p. 20), and the LuHi Open (p. 23).
Campus will be very busy throughout July and August. Summer Programs enrollment has increased compared to 2023, continuing a multi-year trend. One of my favorite summer activities is walking our 32 acres, witnessing young people playing, discovering, and creating. We look forward to a dry, safe, and fantastic eight weeks of camp!
I send you all my best wishes and prayers for a summer full of wonderful memories with family and friends!
God Bless,
John Buck ’02, Head of School

Excitement filled the room as over 200 people gathered in January to help LuHi launch the public phase of the Rise.Shine. Campaign. The Pro Deo et Schola Award, the highest award given at LuHi, was presented that evening to Emeritus Board Member/Chair Paul Homer and his wife Jana, acknowledging their strong, unwavering support and leadership over their many years at LuHi as parents and supporters.
Head of School John Buck laid out details of LuHi’s strategic move forward to completely renovate the main classroom wing and invited LuHi family members to support the most important project undertaken in many years. John enthused, “I am truly grateful for the community members who have made the decision to give to the Rise.Shine. Campaign. This bold step is a critical one for LuHi, as we seek to thrive for decades to come. Let’s keep the momentum going, as we push forward together towards our $15,000,000 long-term goal!”
Construction began in August and is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2024-25 school year. To date, we have been blessed by gifts from $10,000 to $1,000,000 toward this effort. The Development Team continues to engage members of the community in supporting Rise.Shine., and we are grateful to move this capital project forward with partnership from the Lutheran Church Extension Fund.

The LuHi Fund provides support for programs above and beyond tuition, namely:
• In conjunction with the Memorial Endowment Fund, financial aid is provided to over 200 students each year.
• Programmatic enhancements in academic, co-curricular, and spiritual life areas including:
• Retreats at every grade level
• Servant experiences including our annual meal packing event

Around the School
The “winter blues” were certainly remedied this year with our Beyond Boundaries program. Students experienced a variety of classes and spent the time pushing themselves out of their comfort zone! Some designed and built Lego creations, others mastered the game of Pickleball. Another group of students designed floral arrangements and were able to have their creations highlighted at our Campaign Dinner. Cooking, mastering orienteering skills, and discovering the college application process were a few more popular experiences that appealed to our learners. What a week of fun and pushing Beyond Boundaries!
In February, a group of our juniors and seniors volunteered their time to travel with the Reverend Dr. Adam Schoepflin and some of our esteemed faculty and staff to Guatemala
In March, our servant hearts were hard at work again as our campus was fully invested in our Meals From the Heart Meal Packing event. This annual event held in our Visscher gym had students, faculty, staff, as well as partners in our community coming together to help combat food insecurity right in our own backyard. This year we were able to pack 145,104 meals that were then contributed to local food pantries on Long Island. What a blessing to be able to actively serve our community in this way. We have proudly packed over 3 million meals since we began our participation in this program. We are looking forward to next year!
Long a LuHi tradition, World Languages Week put our French and Spanish Clubs on center stage. All students enrolled in language classes participated in the annual World Languages Week poster contest, and our French and Spanish clubs and honor societies ensured all LuHi students had an opportunity to sample delicacies in the annual breakfast event. A newer tradition, students were able to purchase pulseras (bracelets) and support the entrepreneurial endeavors of artisans in Central and South America. We also hosted an art exhibition featuring French and Spanish artists. This year, our Spring theater production took a creative turn! Our resident thespians had the opportunity to create their own musical revue, sampling from a variety of musicals in creating their own plot line throughout. All in attendance were blessed by the growing talents of our young actors, stagehands, and technical support persons!
During the Winter Pep Rally, the entire student body was able to come together to celebrate our winter athletic season in late March. The event, which celebrated all winter teams, centered around the 5 period Students vs. Faculty basketball game. Starting with middle school, and extending through our senior class, the faculty maintained a lead throughout and ended with the victory, in spite of some fierce competition from students! The event ended with a shooting contest between our top Girls and Boys basketball teams.
Each student in the middle school completed an individual science project this spring, and the top projects were chosen in each grade level. 25 projects were featured in the culminating Science Fair, where parents and students throughout the middle school were able to check out the projects and speak with the young scientists about their inspiration and ideas, as well as their findings!
Beginning with the Spring Dance Showcase, each of our Fine Arts were highlighted throughout the Fine Arts Festival, a weekend of emphasis on the arts! Middle and high school dancers, musicians, and visual artists shared their work after months of developing and honing skills and refining their craft, individually and collectively.
Retreats continued in full swing this spring! 11th graders enjoyed a one-day retreat experience at the Long Island Adventure Park focusing on their
transition into senior year as they become the leaders of our school. Long a LuHi favorite, the traditional 8th grade trip to Rocking Horse Dude Ranch was an incredible trip for our rising high schoolers. The week of graduation, members of the class of 2024 and chaperones headed to Camelback Resort in the Poconos for a time of connection and fun, giving students an opportunity to fellowship with their classmates before their senior year comes to a close.
On the Monday before our Jr./Sr. Prom, LuHi gathered in the Visscher Gym to compete in our annual Battle of the Classes. From lip sync challenges to musical chairs to a tense Badminton tournament, the competition was fierce and friendly at the same time. Ultimately, the class of 2025 was crowned the victors!
For one of the newer traditions at LuHi, we were thrilled to present our seniors and 8th graders with yard signs as we move closer and closer to celebrating their transition to post-secondary education and high school, respectively.
LuHi’s highest honor, Pro Deo et Schola, is nominated and voted on by our faculty and staff. This year’s recipients embody the core tenets of the award, translated as “For God and School”. Luke Bassarath ’24 will attend Temple University in the fall, studying Mechanical Engineering, and Lia Martinez ’24 will take a gap year, during which she will engage in service and travel in Mexico and Norway through the organization Youth with a Mission. We are grateful to both of these outstanding members of the class of 2024 for their contributions in all areas of student life.
In March, a small group of 10 and 11-grade students participated in the National Spanish Exam which assesses students’ language abilities in Spanish. This year, five students received Honorable Mention: Ariana Martinez ’26, Stone Mastakouris ’25, Eunice Kim ’25, Christena Neilly ’26, and Javaughn Carr ’26. Olivia Mirador ’26 earned a Silver medal by scoring in the 85% percentile. We are extremely proud of their achievements and we look forward to more competitions that highlight our students' language abilities! This spring, all of our middle school students participated in STEM field trips. Our 6th graders enjoyed STEM Day with the Long Island Nets, and our 7th and 8th graders enjoyed a STEM field trip to United Skates. Each event gave our youngest students the chance to explore STEM concepts in a relevant space!
The final day for the class of 2024 was marked by time-honored and newer traditions alike: the traditional signing of school uniform components, a visit from Mr. Softee, thanks to the generosity of the Family Association, and our senior clap-out. This year, our seniors walked through the Academic Village and up the hill as a class as all of our students, faculty, and staff clapped them out. Following the clap-out, Moving Up Chapel created an opportunity to celebrate the seniors one last time as a full school community, then engage in our traditional Moving Up Ceremony, as our juniors rose to become our new senior class, and so on!
In a tight match-up, the class of 2025 eeked out a win over the class of 2024 in our annual Girls’ Flag Football game. Coached by members of our Varsity Football squad, the teams practiced all week and engaged in a good-natured, competitive game following the seniors’ last day of school. Yearbook signing, Student Government elections, Quarterly Assessments, time spent outdoors, and finalizing the 2023-24 school year were all highlights of the final week of school. We were blessed as a school community to come together in Chapel one last time on our last day of classes, where we celebrated the school year theme, Stand Firm, and worshiped together before bidding everyone farewell for the summer months!
From the Bleachers
The Winter and Spring Athletic seasons were marked by excellence, national rankings, ESPN debuts, and numerous championships, fulfilling our mission of educating our students in body, mind, and spirit!
In the Winter Season, Varsity Wrestling celebrated the ten-year anniversary of their 2013 State Championship and the forty-year milestone of the 1983 State Championship. Under Coach Zack Beauman ’05, the team excelled at the NYSAIS Championships, finishing third overall with Nolan Radics ’25 and Rodney Mills ’24 returning as State Champions. We brought back our Indoor Varsity Track team for the first time in over a decade! They competed in five IVY Developmental meets, led by MVPs Jacob Butler ’26 and Nailah Superville ’28.
Each and every day, this team worked tirelessly to prepare for the Varsity Track and Field Spring Season. These dedicated athletes worked day in and day out with Coach Sean Phillips to push themselves both mentally and physically. The team competed in two PSAA Developmental meets and was led by MVP, Kaela Richards ’28.
The Boys Varsity Basketball Regional Team, coached by Nikko Callender, showed growth despite an early playoff exit, with MVP Carter Abernethy ’26 leading the team alongside Amari Desir ’26 and Jordan Ramirez ’24. Our Girls Varsity Basketball had its most successful season yet, finishing 21-1 and earning the No. 1 spot in the country. The team, led by seniors Syla Swords ’24, Kate Koval ’24, and Kayleigh Heckel ’24, played selflessly and averaged 81 points per game. Coach Christina
Raiti ’12 guided the team to historic achievements, including sending three players to the McDonald’s All-American Game. The team was also recognized as the No. 1 team in America by ESPN. The Boys Varsity Basketball Elite Team, competing in the EYBL Scholastic league, finished with a 21-5 record and ranked No. 4 in the ESPN High School ranking. Senior VJ Edgecombe ’24 earned the NYS Gatorade Player of the Year for the second consecutive year and was named a McDonald’s All-American. Coach Buck ’02 celebrated his 300th win with a victory over Eagle Academy.
The Girls Varsity Lacrosse won their third-straight PSAA Championship, defeating Stony Brook 8-6 in the finals. Seeded No. 8 in the NYSAIS Tournament, they lost to Dalton in the first round. Boys Varsity Lacrosse, led by new coach Todd Higgins,
laid a strong foundation for the future. Seniors Andres Arias ’24 and Leo Sowinski ’24 will continue their careers at the collegiate level.
For the fourth consecutive year, Varsity Baseball secured the PSAA Championship and earned a NYSAIS tournament bid, ultimately losing to Fieldston. The team had a batting average of .297 and notable wins against tough opponents. Varsity Softball, under new coach Hayes Salaverry, focused on fundamentals and culture, setting the stage for future success. New coach Dean McGowan led Varsity Boys’ Tennis. The coach brought his expertise to a green group willing to learn and invest in their skill development. The team was led by MVP Aydan Cowan ’24.
The Varsity Badminton team proved to once again be LuHi’s

most popular sport! With a competitive roster of thirty-four players, the team was competitive within the PSAA. Yuko Yang ’28 took home this year’s Badminton MVP honors.
Varsity Golf, coached by Jon Klemp, faced challenges but showed perseverance. Ashton Kay ’25 set a new LuHi record and represented the team at the NYSAIS Championship.
As we conclude a season of growth, we look forward to celebrating our teams’ achievements and anticipating a successful Fall 2024. Hope to see you in the bleachers!

Honoring a Legacy: The Bob McKillop Invitational
The Bob McKillop Invitational, held at Hofstra University, captivated basketball fans with a celebration of athletic prowess and community spirit. The excitement surrounding the event was palpable, with tickets for Friday night’s game selling out within just 36 hours. The weekend delivered high-caliber basketball and a special tribute to three new inductees into the LuHi Athletic Hall of Fame: Timothy Beckett ’95, Lauren “Boogie” Brozoski ’15, and Brian Clifford ’89
Named in honor of the legendary Coach Bob McKillop, who served LuHi from 1979 to 1989, this invitational was a testament to his enduring legacy. McKillop’s tenure at LuHi was marked by his multifaceted roles, including Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Basketball Team, Director of Summer Programs, and Interim Executive Director. His departure to Davidson University saw him build an exceptional program, coaching NBA All-Star Stephen Curry and leading the team to an Elite 8 appearance in the NCAA tournament. Coach McKillop had a massive role in building LuHi’s basketball legacy, and the Bob McKillop Invitational was an incredible way to honor his impact.
LuHi faced two top ten nationally ranked programs during the tournament, falling to No.1 Montverde Academy on Friday and defeating No. 10 Brewster Academy on Saturday.
The Invitational was more than just a series of basketball games; it was a celebration of community, legacy, and the spirit of competition. The event was a memorable convergence of history and future aspirations on the court.
Keep an eye out for details about next year’s Invitational, and make sure to purchase tickets early!
The Journey to the Right
LuHi’s Comprehensive
LuHi
has served over 5,500 graduates in more than 60 years of providing college preparatory middle and high school education. While the college seeking, application, acceptance, and decision process has seen incredible shifts over the years of LuHi’s operation, one thing has remained consistent: LuHi’s School Counselors, from grades 6 through 12, work alongside students and families, meeting them where they are in order to support present and future decisionmaking as students become who God intends them to be.
OUR COUNSELORS AND PHILOSOPHY
LuHi’s team supports students and families in identifying each student’s God-given talents and gifts, selecting courses that challenge and support their post-high school goals and seeking the best “fit” for their post-LuHi journey. Walking side-by-side throughout the experience, LuHi’s School Counselors learn about each student and family, guiding them with compassion and transparency through the process. While the formalized college process accelerates in students’ junior year, it begins even before they enroll at LuHi.
A recent NAIS blog post by President Debra P. Wilson noted, “...as admission decisions continue to get more haphazard, it becomes more crucial to help parents and students understand…that the success of college or university placement is not where a student goes, but what they do when they get there, and beyond.” This aligns with LuHi’s focus: each student is a unique child of God, created in the image of God, with unique God-given talents and gifts. From enrollment to graduation, our fervent prayer is that each student finds the best possible fit for their unique goals, values, passions, and skills.
COURSE OFFERINGS
Approach to College
In high school, students have access to College Prep, Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP) level courses. Freshman Seminar offers 9th graders an opportunity to build skills and mindsets necessary for success in high school. Elective courses are added and revised each year to fit the needs of our current student body, with electives available in nearly every academic department. We are poised to offer 20 AP courses this coming school year. Starting this year, all seniors will be required to take a semester-long Financial Literacy course, recognizing the critical importance of the development of knowledge and dispositions as they make financial decisions both in high school and beyond.
From 6th through 12th grade, emphasis is placed on the completion of a research-based position paper. With a different focus each year, this long-term process is highly scaffolded early on and gradually becomes more and more independent as students develop the skills necessary to independently take on the rigor of college writing. Regularly, alumni cite their preparation in writing as a strong suit of a LuHi education.
ANNUAL COURSE SELECTION
Each year our team of teachers, counselors, and administrators evaluates the course offerings at each level. Each 6th and 7th grader has access to a Focus course, designed to support growth in executive function and communication skills, as well as provide acceleration or skill support, especially as they acclimate to middle school. New in 2024-25, all students in grades 7, 8, and 9 can explore computer science and hands-on engineering skills through newly offered general STEM courses.
Each Spring, counselors meet with each student to facilitate course selection for the following school year. Based on teacher recommendation, student interest, and family input, a schedule is crafted, supporting students to meet credit requirements and poise themselves to meet future goals. While different in scope, a key component of these conversations is identifying and pursuing an appropriate degree of challenge for each student. Unlike some other schools our size, LuHi does not require students to choose an honors track or a college prep track. Students may seek increased challenge in some areas, but not others, depending on their unique profile. Throughout the years, families and counselors build relationships and course selections are intentional, focused on both student strengths and aspirations!
6TH GRADE COLLEGE DAY
Each year, LuHi 6th graders spend a day immersed in learning about colleges and universities, exploring them through online research and perusal of college materials. Our School Counseling team inquires with a variety of colleges and universities and a selection of roughly 6-12 are chosen, representing a variety of regions, sizes, and school identities.
“Fit” and Beyond
Teams of students work together to research their assigned college and prepare for a College Information Fair, visited by students, faculty, and staff.
NAVIANCE AND OTHER RESOURCES
Beginning in 9th grade, students have access to their own Naviance account, where they are introduced to self-discovery and career planning tools. As students move through high school Naviance becomes a central location for investigating admissions trends by college, requesting recommendation letters, uploading test scores, and more.
FRESHMEN FAMILY NIGHT
The transition from middle to high school can be a challenge, and our 9th grade family night is designed to support families in their journey! Complete with games and rich discussion, the evening helps families to understand the preparation for the college process beginning in 9th grade.
INSIDE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS EVENT
This annual family night for high school students is a highlight of each year. Our school counseling office brings in Admissions Counselors from a variety of colleges and universities, each offering up their own advice and insight as a panelist. With the intention of providing representation from a variety of schools, this evening truly provides a “behind the scenes” view of the college admissions process, from those who live it each day!
CAREER DAY
Following School Counseling Office push-ins involving career inventories, LuHi offers 10th and 11th grade students an opportunity to hear directly from professionals in a variety of fields, both via a panel discussion with the entire group, and then in smaller groups with our 11th graders, who are able to choose which career paths resonate most with them. Beginning in 2024-25, we are looking forward to bringing LuHi alumni back into this informative event.
JUNIOR COLLEGE MEETINGS
ONSITE COLLEGE VISITS
Our School Counseling Office is regularly approached by colleges wishing to meet LuHi students, and throughout the fall semester, several colleges visit each week for lunch meetings with groups of students. These are opportunities for our students to interact with an Admissions Counselor as well as to learn more about each college’s unique features and admissions priorities. All students are encouraged to attend a few of these, even if they don’t necessarily have an interest in a particular college.
COLLEGE WEEK AND ONSITE ADMISSIONS
In late fall of each school year, the School Counseling office hosts College Week, where students are encouraged to participate in college-related trivia questions. There are daily opportunities for all students, grades 6 through 12, to win college-related prizes! On the last date of College Week, students and faculty are encouraged to wear college t-shirts or non-hooded sweatshirts. During College Week, the School Counseling office invites several local universities, including St. John’s University, Molloy University, and SUNY Old Westbury, for onsite admissions days here at LuHi. With the support of our school counselors, seniors are able to receive on the spot acceptances and often financial aid awards, as their application materials have been vetted before the onsite admission day. This is a wonderful boost for our students, as they can head into the Christmas break with at least one acceptance!
COLLEGE COMMITMENT CELEBRATION
With many colleges requiring commitment by May 1, the days leading up to May are both an exciting and sometimes nerve-wracking time for our seniors. Our School Counseling Office hosts a celebration of college commitments, during which we ask our students to wear the t-shirt or sweatshirt of their chosen institution, take a group photo, and enjoy some eclairs in the mansion courtyard in celebration of the d’eclair-ation of senior’s college choice. By this time, there is a collective air of excitement and celebration!
Often one of the most impactful events of the college process, the junior college meeting is an opportunity for each student, their family, and their counselor to meet and discuss post-LuHi priorities, set clear expectations around the college process, and begin to narrow down and focus in on the best fit for each student. Lasting about an hour, these individually tailored conversations are just one part of the partnership model at LuHi!
ON THE HORIZON
Our School Counseling Office is in the process of arranging one or more college visit day trips for Juniors and Seniors this coming school year.
Congratulations to the
LuHi Class of 2024!
Celebrating the Class of ’24!
On Saturday, June 15, LuHi held its 61st Commencement Ceremony celebrating the Class of 2024. The Visscher Gym buzzed with excitement as family, friends, and guests of the graduating class awaited the commencement ceremony for the graduating seniors.
The Class of 2024 selected Joseph Baumgarn as this year’s commencement speaker. In his address, Joseph humorously recounted his attempts to complement seniors by using their slang—words like “lit,” “fire,” and “tough”—only to find they were a bit embarrassed. Despite this, he conveyed his genuine pride in their achievements and expressed heartfelt wishes for their success as they embark on their journeys to college and beyond. Joseph’s speech was a representation of the power of relationship-building between faculty and students at LuHi.
In her reflective speech, Ella O’Hara, the Salutatorian of the Class of 2024, reminisced about simpler times in
elementary school, drawing parallels to the bucket-filling activities that brought joy to her and her siblings. From collecting rocks to playing games and exploring secret spots, she highlighted the importance of embracing what brings happiness, even as one grows older. She challenged the notion of maturity, advocating for the continuation of fun and laughter into adulthood. Ella urged her peers to let go of embarrassment and judgment, emphasizing the significance of living life to the fullest. As she thanked her teachers, friends, family, and classmates, she expressed gratitude for the memories and experiences that have filled her bucket to the brim.
Valedictorian Eileen Choi shared her gratitude for the supportive community at LuHi, including friends, family, faculty, and the administration. She reflected on how often she found herself saying, “I can’t wait” for the next break or milestone, only to realize that by constantly looking forward, she missed appreciating the present.
Eileen emphasized the importance of living in the moment and recognizing the blessings and opportunities provided by God, urging her classmates to cherish their current experiences rather than rushing toward the future. She concluded with a call to embrace the present, congratulating the Class of 2024 for their achievements.
Luke Bassarath and Lia Martinez, the 2024 Pro Deo et Schola Award winners, offered the final prayer of the ceremony. The Pro Deo et Schola award is presented to the senior boy and girl who exemplify a Christian life in school and their home churches, and is the highest award presented at LuHi.
The ceremony concluded with a receiving line down the main LuHi hill, where students hugged and high-fived their teachers. The class gathered one last time on the LuHi field to celebrate their graduation with a light reception and plenty of photos and hugs with family and friends. Congratulations, Class of 2024!
Stand Firm
Ephesians 6:13a
The Journey Continues
The Journey Continues, held on Friday, June 7, celebrated the accomplishments and achievements of LuHi’s 8th grade students as they moved from middle school to high school. In addition to special performances by students, and a ceremony where each student received a Bible, students shared testimonials and speeches that reflected on their growth and experiences during their time at LuHi. In their speech, Emma Maguire and Frankco Harris shared how the core values of LuHi—Christian Love, Community, Excellence, and Family—create a supportive and positive school culture, highlighting the exceptional dedication of their teachers and the close-knit community that has shaped their middle school experience. We wish God’s richest blessings to the Class of 2028 as their journey continues!
Alumni of the Year
Alumni Association Honors 2024 Award Recipients
Congratulations to Meredith Cammarata ’00 and Bryan McWilliams ’97 who were honored as 2024 Alumni of the Year during LuHi Chapel on May 1. She also serves as an ambassador for MSK’s Patient and Family Advisory Council for Quality (PFACQ).
Her current clinical interests and research focus on parenting with cancer, creating interventions for families at the end of life, and racism in the healthcare system. She has authored journal articles and books on best practices for supporting people impacted by cancer, including her most recent article titled, “Developing Antiracist Social Work Practice at a Comprehensive Cancer Center.” Outside of MSK, Meredith is an active member of the Association of Oncology Social Work, where she has served on their board of directors and was awarded the organization’s Oncology Social Worker of the Year in 2016.
At LuHi, Meredith was part of the tennis, track, and lacrosse teams. She also played clarinet in the band. After graduating from LuHi, she attended Quinnipiac University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She then enrolled in Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service where she received a Master of Social Work degree with a specialization in children and families.
Meredith resides with her husband Steve, their two children, Liam and Coralei, and her mom (AKA LuHi’s Mrs. Cammarata) in Huntington, New York.
Bryan McWilliams ’97 is Vice President of Business Development at ParsonsKellogg. Since joining the company in 2004 as its fourth employee, Bryan has played a vital role in its expansion from startup to leader in the corporate merchandise sector, with a workforce of over 120 employees and generating revenues in the hundreds of millions. His efforts have been crucial in establishing significant customer relationships with major corporations like Home Depot, USAA, Stryker, Humana, and professional sports teams, as well as securing partnerships with top brands including Patagonia, Nike, Peter Millar, Helly Hansen, and YETI.
At LuHi, Bryan played baseball and enthusiastically participated in music programs, playing both upright and electric bass guitars. He was a member of National Honor Society and H.A.R.T. After graduating with honors from LuHi, he continued his education at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, and he has made his home in Rhode Island ever since. Bryan is committed to the community, volunteering as a mentor at the San Miguel School for boys from underserved backgrounds, the Rhode Island Reserve Medical Corps, and as a volunteer Little League coach. He is also actively involved in ParsonsKellogg’s participation as a member of 1% for The Planet.
Bryan cherishes time spent with his wife, Devon, and their son, Jack. They reside in Barrington, Rhode Island, and enjoy spending as much time on the water as they can.
Sunny Skies, Exciting Golf, Exemplary Honorees
LuHi supporters filled the Brookville Country Club at the LuHi Open on June 20. It was a sunny day, and the winning best-ball team score came in at 13 under par. Early into the round, cheers rang out around the course as Head of School John Buck got a hole-in-one and won a 2025 Super Bowl package!
During dinner, guests heard exciting updates on the Rise.Shine. Campaign and classroom wing renovations. The evening culminated with honoring incredible members of the LuHi Family with the 2024 Rev. Ed Visscher Award.
Honoree Jason Zubatkin, with his firm Zubatkin Owner Representation, guided our school through the recent master planning process. His expertise has helped our school develop a plan for the future that will provide the best possible environment for our distinctive LuHi experience, in which our students will learn for decades to come.
As a married couple, honorees Christine Lombardo ’00 and Christopher Prokopowicz ’00 have been engaged alumni for many years. Thankful for the gift of their own LuHi experience, they support students through a scholarship fund in memory of Christine’s parents. They shine as examples of giving alumni who engage themselves meaningfully at LuHi through events and campaign support.
Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy a day of golf, celebrate our honorees, and support our students at LuHi!

On the Road Again
LuHi hits the road once a year to reconnect with alumni and allow them to network with other LuHi family members in their area. Knowing where you live helps us plan which areas in the country to visit. Use the QR code on page 25 to update your information as we plan for the future.
This year’s trip took the Development Team to the South in April. We logged 3,000+ air miles and 800+ miles by car. Our travels included connecting with 61 LuHi family members over 4 days and 5 different events, visiting Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, Charleston, and Nashville – a real whirlwind! Alumni from 1966 through 2015 as well as a few former staff members, board members, and alumni parents came together to share their LuHi stories and their professional, community, and family experiences with each other. We even got to meet 4 children of our alumni!
The NYC Alumni Networking Event followed in May and, in spite of rainy weather, alumni showed up to reconnect with classmates and make new connections with those living and working in the NY Metro area. They also enjoyed an update on the Rise.Shine. Campaign and school news from Head of School, John Buck ’02.
Best question of the day came from Orpheus Cuttino ’83, “What did you learn at LuHi that you use every day?” Great conversation ensued involving faith, composition and research, and even typing!
CURRENT
Rev. Dr. Adam Schoepflin ’05, Campus Pastor, completed his Doctorate of Ministry in Pastoral Counseling from Liberty University.

Congratulations to Mrs. Kim Abruzzo, recipient of the 2024 Randy Abbe Christian Service Award!
FORMER
Alum Dan Doyle ’89 honored his coach and mentor by sponsoring the Bob McKillop Invitational at Hofstra University in February. Top-ranked boys teams from the EYBL played, as well as local Catholic High School teams from Coach McKillop’s early years. McKillop left LuHi to become the long-tenured successful coach at Davidson College, enjoying 10 appearances in the NCAA Tournament and coaching NBA great Stephen Curry.
We are saddened to share that LuHi alum and long-serving staff member John Alberda ’65 passed away on January 31, 2024 from complications of Parkinson’s disease. John attended LuHi from the very first day it opened in September 1960, graduating in 1965. Leaving for 4 short years to get his degree in education, John promptly returned to LuHi where he served his entire 50-year career as a called teaching minister and coach. Known and loved by so many LuHi students and co-workers over years of dedicated service, John’s memorial service was attended by family, classmates, and former students at LuHi in March.
97-year-old Margaret Trinklein, former staff member and wife of Dr. Fred Trinklein, attended her 13th eclipse with family and was interviewed by an NBC affiliate about her history and zest for eclipses. Search for the segment at www.14news. com for “It makes me wonder what heaven’s going to be like.”
