COMMITTED, APPROACHABLE TEACHERS You’ll find studying at Sixth Form College different to studying at school. At Long Road we recognise that you are an individual and will treat you as an adult. Taught by highly qualified and experienced specialists you’ll be in smaller classes with more one-to-one attention. Classes in Sixth Form require high levels of student participation and mature group discussions, and will encourage you to develop and express your own opinions. With the support and guidance of our friendly, approachable teachers you will carry out research on varied topics and give presentations to your fellow classmates, developing your research techniques, evaluation skills, and organisation. Perhaps the biggest difference to school is that not all of your learning will be in classrooms. You’ll hear lectures and attend workshops led by business leaders, research scientists, musicians, academics and other experts related to your study programme and future goals.

NURTURING INDEPENDENT LEARNING

4

At Long Road we encourage your learning to flourish with study spaces across our campus and resources easily accessible online. Lessons at college are between 9:00am and 4:10pm, but unlike school, you won’t spend all day in class. You’ll have independent study periods, allowing you to work on assignments, carry out research and explore your course in depth either on or off campus. This time will be spent reviewing your class notes, completing assignments, reading around your topics, discovering current research in your field and preparing for your next class. As you settle into life at Long Road you’ll learn how to organise your independent study time, carry out your own research, analyse sources and present your arguments. Much of your independent study time will be spent in our Student Centre, which has its own computer suite, or in our Learning Resource Centre, a study complex made up of a central library, computer rooms, group study area and silent study space.

The Learning Resource Centre is a popular place for independent study

Rebecca Page,

International horse rider

“I studied PE, photography and psychology when I was at college. I found them interesting and achieved high grades but my passion has always been horse riding. Leaving Long Road was a bit of a crossroads moment for me and I wasn’t sure what path to follow. “That was 4 years ago now and since leaving Long Road I’ve set up my own business competing horses at an international level! This is completely different to what I studied but the skills in organisation, self-motivation and independence I learnt at Long Road, from my subjects and general college life, have allowed me to establish a successful career doing what I love. “Long Road didn’t just teach me the facts I needed to pass exams, but taught me the life skills I needed to turn my dream career into reality.”

Bethany Jones,

Senior Accountant, Price Bailey (apprenticeship as junior accountant)

“Long Road helped me by giving me the tools to achieve good grades at A level and set me up for what a working environment is like – such as, calling your tutors by their first names. Long Road helped me develop some soft skills such as organisation, working together in group projects, and timekeeping and they encourage their students to continue developing even after college. I enjoyed the atmosphere at Long Road and my subjects as I chose them myself. I had good relationships with my tutors and knew they would be happy to help me if needed.”

This year our Annual Progression Event welcomed 25 organisations from a diverse range of sectors including engineering, finance, property, IT, uniformed services and healthcare. Feedback from students, teachers and employers has been consistently positive; this year a number of students secured interviews and internships with companies such as Bidwells, AXA Insurance and Turners Soham Ltd.

Or what to study? All our Year 1 students are invited to the UCAS Higher Education Convention each June where you can speak to UCAS experts and representatives from a huge number of universities. We’ll even bring the universities to you! This academic year we’ve had over 15 different universities visit our campus – the University of Sheffield, Newcastle University, University of East Anglia, and the University of Dundee to name just a few.

Aiming for Oxbridge? We’ll arrange for you to meet an Admissions Officer to find out what’s required, and support you every step of the way as you reach for your goals.

Will Miles, Seabird Ecologist

“I am a seabird ecologist working on Shetland, one of the UK’s top locations for marine wildlife. From a very young age I was interested in outdoor activities and nature, particularly birds and fish. Between years 1 and 2 at Long Road I volunteered at Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve, a perfect place to learn about wildlife and practical nature conservation. “After my 3 main A levels (biology, chemistry and geography taken in 2000) I worked part-time at DEFRA, continued volunteering at Wicken Fen and took A level art at Long Road. This art course demonstrated many of Long Road’s excellent qualities. I was always treated as a responsible individual and given huge encouragement and support to achieve my best. “Before deciding whether to go to university, I spent a year working at RSPB Minsmere in Suffolk. In my case, volunteering soon led to a paid research assistant contract working on bitterns at Minsmere. Professional wildlife research and conservation has been my career for almost 20 years now, and I have worked in a variety of exciting locations. In recent years I have also worked abroad, for example on the Falkland Islands doing albatross and penguin research. “My degree was Ecology & Conservation at Anglia Ruskin University then, following a year of bird research and conservation work in Speyside and then Shetland, I did a PhD on seabirds at the University of Glasgow, then later a post-doc on seabirds and migrant birds at the University of Aberdeen. I am now based permanently on Shetland and am employed by the University of St Andrews.”

A levels are two-year academic qualifications which you can take in a variety of subjects. You need to choose 3 A level courses to create your full study programme, or you can mix and match A levels with Level 3 Diplomas: check out page 52 to see how to do this. A level courses are on the purple pages of the Course Finder section (pages 56-103). Assessment You will be assessed by examination at the end of Year 2. A few A levels have a small coursework component, usually no more than 30%. Entry requirements 7 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including maths and English. Level 3 Diplomas

Level 3 Diplomas are two-year courses which combine practical learning with the study of theory. Although each subject is related to a general area of employment, the skills you develop can be transferred to a wide range of careers. To create a full study programme you need to choose the equivalent of 3 courses; these can also be combined with A levels – turn to page 52 to see how to do this. Level 3 Diplomas can be taken as: – an Extended Certificate = 1 course – a Diploma = 2 courses – an Extended Diploma = 3 courses Level 3 Diplomas are shown on the red pages of the Course Finder section (pages 56-103). Assessment Some Diplomas at Long Road are assessed fully by non-examination assignments, but others have externally-marked exams. Entry requirements At least five GCSE grade 4s in a range of subjects including English (with Merit in the subject applied for if taken as an applied course at Level 2). Students with at least seven GCSEs at grade 4 may include one or more A levels in their programme subject to meeting any additional A level subject entry criteria. Students with a Distinction grade in a related area (6-credit qualification) may be considered with a grade 3 in GCSE English. Your future You can use your Diploma to progress to university, an apprenticeship or employment. Note: We regularly review our entry requirements. Check out our website for any updates www.longroad.ac.uk/courses.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

One of our students rebuilt a cat skeleton for their final EPQ product

Boost your CV and enhance your personal statement while carrying out an independent project on a topic you love. The EPQ is equivalent to half an A level, but it’s so much more than an extra qualification. The Extended Project Qualification showcases to employers and universities that you’re an independent learner, able to manage a project, solve problems, organise your time, conduct original research and produce a high-quality product. In fact, this additional qualification is so highly valued that some universities will even lower their grade boundaries for you if you achieve a high EPQ grade! Independence is key with the EPQ, meaning you get to choose what you’d like to study and how you’d like to study it. The topic can be related to your other subjects or something completely different and you can decide how you present your final product. You can… • write a dissertation • create an artefact • produce a performance, or • carry out an investigation. Why do girls tend to outperform boys in the education system? What attracts people to join religious sects and cults? How do we explain the recent rise in violent knife and gun crime in the UK? Sociology is concerned with social behaviour and attempts to ask these kinds of questions about why society works the way it does and why people behave in the way they do. Forcing you to look at the world in new ways, you will have frequent opportunities for discussion, drawing on your own experiences and opinions, enabling you to relate these to relevant sociological ideas and evidence. As you work on individual, small group and whole-class tasks you will develop a range of transferable skills, including the ability to think sociologically by placing yourself in the shoes of others, to analyse and evaluate arguments and to present information logically. Your studies will be varied, with visits from outside speakers, film screenings, trips (which in the past have included visits to Liverpool and Manchester), and a Crime Conference with ex-prisoners talking about their offending and experience of prison. Studying Sociology will open doors to a range of further studies and apprenticeships, making you well prepared for careers in law, police work, journalism, teaching, human resources, social work, civil services, probation work, management and the world of business.
