Bangkok Airways Signs Codeshare Agreement Bangkok, April 24, 2015 – Bangkok Airways, a Thailand-based regional airline and Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, entered into a codeshare agreement. Under this reciprocal codeshare arrangement, Bangkok Airways will place its marketing code on Jet Airways’ operations between Bangkok (BKK) and Mumbai (BOM). Likewise, Jet Airways will place its marketing code on Bangkok Airways’ flights between Mumbai (BOM) and Bangkok (BKK). Cro sso v e r : T h e U n v eile d C o llec tio n クロスオーバー：未発表のコレクション It is widely known that several major works have been lost from the history of Thai art; however, there are also some other works which have been well preserved by individual collectors, private patrons, educational institutions, financial institutions and private organizations.

This exhibition aims to complete historical records with findings from this new exploration; to select interesting artists and works of arts from private collections for the public to appreciate; and most importantly, to discover the role of art collectors, as well as their perspectives and opinions on the “aesthetics” of the works. The definitions of “artistic value” and “economic value” have been explored together with the relationship between the artist’s creation and the patron’s collecting method. Changes in time, circumstances and contexts have also been studied. All these explorations are carried out under the notion that the art scene is not only the representation of artists’ identities; it also includes the existence of art collectors, which should be reflected in the history of art.

To achieve the goal, collectors are invited to provide useful information and share historical works of art from their collections for the educational benefits of the public.

EDITOR’S TALK The Man Who Captured History Through His Lens In 1865, a photographer named John Thomson took a journey from his homeland Scotland and arrived in Siam (presently Thailand) by steamboat. Throughout the 5 month period that he stayed in the Land of Smile, John Thomson captured pictures of the young princes and princesses along with maids in waiting which clearly reflected the definitive caste system deeply rooted in the era of feudalism. His work revealed the way of life for the people in that era through royal ceremonies, Siamese children, local citizens and the scenic ancient city of Rattanakosin. Although capturing images on film using camera obscura mirror lens 150 years ago was more of a challenge than present, it didn’t stop John Thomson from embarking on a journey to document historical events throughout Asian countries. The photo collections by John Thomson have been carefully preserved in Wellcome Library, London and came to life again through the public exhibition at the National Museum in Bangkok. This art gallery is located near the Grand Palace, a familiar place to John Thomson 150 years ago when he first began his photographic adventure in the Far East. Though the exhibition has passed*, the memorable work by John Thomson continues to vividly capture the eyes of the beholder in the recently published book titled Siam, Through the Lens of john Thomson 1865–66 for those with the passion for historical accounts of Siam through priceless lens.

Royal Image of King Rama IV, This Royal Image was granted to John Thomson when he received an audience on October 1865 at the Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall, Grand Palace capturing King Rama IV wearing dark blue velour garment with gold vine pattern embroidery commonly worn by French generals. The royal outfit included a Royal French Sash and Badge Legion d’Honneur dedicated by Napoleon III.

In 1865 towards the end of King Rama IV reign of Siam, a photographer named John Thomson took a journey across the ocean to the Land of Smiles, Thailand (formerly known as Siam) to document historical moments which splendidly captured Thailand’s chronological events of that era.

On January 10, 2015, the historic photos by John Thomson went on display through an extraordinary exhibition of ‘Siam, Through the Lens of John Thomson’ at the National Museum, Art Gallery, Chao Fah Road, Bangkok. This location is significant as it is near the Grand Palace, the same place he was once granted an audience 150 years ago to capture these priceless photographs. Though the exhibition ended some time ago, its historical values filled with memorable sentiment still linger on.

The team of Longstay Guide Magazine would like to take this opportunity to bring back the dynamic work of John Thomson so it will continue to live on a little bit longer for our readers in this issue.

John Thomson was one of the many noteworthy international photographers who received the honor to capture in detail the identity of Siam 150 years ago. The photos consisted of Royal Images of King Rama IV in the royal court and palace taken with camera obscura mirror lens by John Thomson. Other photos captured important events in Thai history that occurred during his 5 month stay in Siam.

2015年1月10日から2月28日まで、 “ジョン･トムソンのレンズが観た、 サヤーム”と題した写真展がバンコクのジャオファー通りにある国立博物館 で開催され、彼が捉えた当時の人々の写真が展示された。博物館は、彼が 今から150年前に、これらの貴重な歴史資料となった写真を収めるために 訪れた王宮の傍にある。写真展は既に終了しているが、Longstay Guide Magazineでは今回特別に、歴史物語が一杯詰まった彼の作品を皆さんに ご紹介したい。 ジョン･トムソンは、世界的にも有名な写真家の1人で、150年前のサヤ ームの人々の生活風景を詳細に記録している。これらの写真は、フィルム 圧板を利用したもので、ラーマ4世の写真も数多く残されており、彼が王よ り王宮へ入る許可を得ていたことが伺える。その他にも、5ヶ月間に渡るサ ヤームでの滞在期間中に、タイの歴史を語る貴重な資料となる写真を数多 く残している。

If a picture paints a thousand words, the photographic documentations by John Thomson accomplished just that by clearly reflecting Thailand’s past history through images of the young princes and princesses along with the ladies in waiting. The photos revealed a historical past of social hierarchy particularly the caste system, early bureaucracy and slavery. Furthermore, it gave the later generations a glimpse of traditional royal etiquette in the palace as well as local lifestyle of the people at that time. Though capturing images through the use of camera obscura mirror lens 150 years ago required more efforts than today, the young John Thomson at the age of 28 determinedly chose to embark on his adventurous journey throughout the region of Asia leaving a legacy of priceless reflections of the past for history lovers to vividly relive over and over again through images similar to reading countless pages of traditional history books.

ジョン･トムソンの写真は過去のタイを如実に映し出している。王侯貴 族や女官、雑士などの写真は、当時の階級制度、奴隷制の他、王宮での慣 習やしきたり、庶民の生活風景を垣間見ることのできる貴重な資料となって いる。150年以上前の技術を利用したカメラの画像ではあるが、当時の生活 の大変さが伺い知れる。当時、28歳であったジョン･トムソンは他のアジアの 歴史を記録するためサヤームを後にし、その後も旅を続けた。 古い写真を通して過去の出来事を学ぶことは、歴史書を読むこととそれ ほど変わらないほどの価値がある。

The Royal Albino Elephant of King Rama IV Elephants, have always played an important role in Thai society. Albino elephants are particularly rare and considered auspicious symbolizing good fortune and prosperity to the country and her subjects. In the picture you can see the elephant’s ears adorn with gold Lotus bud shape tassel made from pure white yak hair.

We can infer from this picture that the infrastructure during the reign of King Rama IV did not rely on land transportation in Bangkok metropolitan area as displayed by the male model posing with a boat paddle. We see a typical young man of that era wearing a local hand woven cotton wrap sporting a military hairdo and holding a paddle in his hand while striking a pose in front of a sugar cane bush for John Thomson. この写真はラーマ4世時代当時の交通事情がわかる。まだ、バンコ クでも陸上交通量はそれ程多くなく、当時は船が主要な乗り物であ った。船の櫂を持つ写真の男性は、地元で織られた綿のジョーグラ ベーン(ゆったりしたズボン)をはいており、髪はタイの軍人スタイ ル。サトウキビ畑の前で、ジョン･トムソンに撮影されたものだ。

King Rama IV proceeded from the Grand Palace accompanied by royal grand procession on route to offer religious offerings at Wat Phra Chetupon Wimon Mangkhalaram (Wat Pho) on Friday, October 13, 1865. Once the procession reached the temple, it stopped for a brief moment in order for John Thomson to capture the historical image. For this particular frame, some members of the royal procession even turned their heads facing the camera.

The original film taken by John Thomson has been well preserved at Wellcome Institution in London. What are your academic credentials?

I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University and continued my education there in the field of Family Medicine.

【場所】カンペンディンとロイクロ道路の交差点から、ガンペン ディン道路を150mほど北進する。 【全般】(1) この寺については多くの資料が揃っていない。チェ ンマイ大学、TAT、境内案内板など信憑性の高い資料間にも情報 の違いが見られる。そこで境内施設の詳細などを深く紹介する ことはせず、歴史・文化などを中心にまとめた。(2) 当シリーズ で使用する用語： ・再興ランナー王朝の君主は王ではなく公と 表記する。・ビルマの英文表記が公式にミャンマーとなったの は21世紀のこと。当シリーズはそれ以前のことを扱っているの でビルマと表記する。 【概要】この寺について、知っていれば有用と考えられるのは、 次のようなことである。(1) Baan Hom Areaに、チェンセーンか ら移住してきたChang Khong村のドラ作りの職人たちが建立した 寺である。寺名はそれに因んで付けられた（職人+ドラ作り）。 (2) 寺は廃寺だったWat Si Phun To寺の境内に建立されたもので、 昔は広い寺領があった。(3) 後にロイクロ道路が建設され寺領は二 分された。結果として、仏塔とウボソット（布薩堂）は、メーピ ンホテルの敷地内に入った。それらは今も丁寧に維持されている が、小さくなった境内に仏塔とウボソットが新たに建立された。 (4) 中国様式の有名な経蔵（Ho Trai）がある。(5) 旧市街の北の ノンブア（池+蓮）から流れるメーカ川に沿って建設された土塁 の内側には歓楽街があった。『ステープに登って土塁で遊び、カ オソーイを食べる』、という言葉のあったことが資料に見える。 【各論】 (1) 歴史：カーウィラ公はチェンセーンでビルマ軍を破 り、村民をチェンマイに拉致した。『野菜を篭に、人々を都に』

政策である。中には青銅のドラ（khong）を作る技術者（chang） もいた。彼らはBaan Homに住み、この寺を建立した。寺名は彼 らの出自に因んでつけられた。(2) 建立：カーウィラ公の治世に 廃寺となったWat Phum To寺（1357建立）の跡地に建立された。 (3) 古い仏塔と布薩堂：メーピンホテル敷地内にある施錠されて いる古い布薩堂を開けてもらったが、正面に3体の仏像、床に薄 いカーペットが敷いてあるのみで何もない。 (4) 経蔵：使用されていないが、中国風で趣のある古い経蔵があ る。(5) Baan Hom：ターペー路、濠路、ロイクロ路、およびカン ペンディン路で囲まれた地域。 二つのことを追記する。(1) ロイ クロ道路ができたとき、この寺の敷地は二分された。すなわち、 仏塔とウボソットは道路によって一筆から外れ、現在ではメーピ ン・ホテルの庭にある。ホテルに行く機会があれば、非常に珍し い様式の仏塔は必見である。寺の前のガンペンディン道路は、寺 からメーピン・ホテルに到る正式の道であるが、寺の僧は、寺 から直接この二つの古い伽藍に繋がる、細い裏道を利用してい る。このcat-walkは民家の軒下を通る赴きのある通路である。両 施設は、ホテルによりぬかりなく手入れされている。チェンマ イ大学の資料によると古いウボソットは、今は使われていない。 (2) 更に今は使われていなくて少し異様な印象を受ける、中国 風の外観をもつ古い経蔵がある。寺を訪れた人の印象記を見る と、「不気味」と書くものもある。経蔵は“Ho Trai” とか“Ho Tham”と呼ばれるが、これは“三蔵教の書庫”“経典の書庫” といった意味である。椰子の葉に書かれた古い経典が保管され ている。

Hello, my name is Miko Hoshii and I am 27 years old. I am originally from Tokyo and it is my pleasure to meet you.

Why did you decide to travel to Thailand?

When I was an exchange student in Australia, I met my Thai boyfriend there. After we completed our courses, we both went back home to our countries. About a year passed and we reconnected again when he asked if I wanted to join him and “give Thailand a try”. We talked about setting up a business together since we like similar things and agreed on a cozy café. We started from zero and it took me 3 months to learn about bakery in Japan. We wanted our start to be in Chiang Mai because there is a considerable amount of Japanese residents living there. With similar tradition and culture, it makes us feel right at home. We have been in business for 2 years now and every day has brought us genuine joy.

Why did you choose “Khagee” as a name for your café?

‘Khagee’ comes from the word ‘Kiew Khagee’ (refreshingly green) in Thai “which gives a feeling of naturally refreshing. I wanted to use a Thai word that people can easily relate to. As for the interior décor, it was mostly my personal touch. Our café offers a variety of dessert like Melon Shortcake, bread with creamy filling and muffins”.

What are some problems that you encounter during your stay in Thailand?

“There were actually several but the major one occurred when we first arrived here. We brought our pets along with us (a dog and a bird) so living in a condo was out of the question. We had to find a house for rent so we can all be together. The house we found was not so impressive with no utilities like electricity and plumbing.

The owner was not so tentative and we have moved 3 times since then. At the moment, we’re very happy living in Chiang Mai”.person.

Sometimes it is too relaxed here and it makes me lazy.

星 美輝 私とカジー はじめまして、ホシイ ミキといいます。日本の東京出身 の２７歳です。 タイに滞在するきっかけは何ですか？ －はじめにオーストラリアに留学し、そこでタイ人の彼氏と出会いまし た。その後、私は日本に帰ったのですが、タイに戻った彼から１年後 に、 「よかったら、タイに来ないか？」と言われたのです。それから、 彼がお店をオープンしたいという話になりました。ちょうど私たちに はカフェ好きという共通点があったので、一緒にお店を開くことにな りました。最初は何も分からず全てゼロから始めました。私は日本で ３ヶ月間ほどベーカリーについて学んでからチェンマイに来ました。 チェンマイには日本人がたくたんいるし、美しい文化もある。これ がこの街を選んだ理由です。店をオープンしてから、今年で２年にな ります。

お店の名前「カジー」はどのような意味ですか？ 「カジー」はタイ語の「キアオカジー」から来ました。 「フレッシュ な緑」という意味で、そういったタイ語の自然に因んだ名前を使いた くて、お店の名前も「カジー」になりました。お店のデザインは彼と私 で２人で協力して造りました。色々な種類のベーカリーがあり、メロン パンやクリームパン、 マフィンなど天然酵母で作っています。

タイの滞在中に困ったことはありますか？ －問題はいっぱいあるけど、最初は貸家を探すのが結構大変でした。 犬と鳥を飼っているのでコンドミニアムはだめでした。最初に見つけた 貸家があまり良くなくて、水道、電気、家具もなく、オーナーもあまり 協力してくれませんでした。それから３回くらい引越しをしましたが、 今はチェンマイで幸せに暮らしています。

カワビタキ Behavior: A species of bird in the Muscicapidae family, it is found in Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are streams and rivers with boulders that are shaded, as well as vegetation near riverbanks. Streams with higher populations of insects such as mayflies appear to be preferred. With a total length of 13-14 centimeters, the male is the male birds are slate blue in color with a tail that is rusty red. On the other hand, female birds are pale grey and feature a white rump. The bird feeds on insects and insect eggs, which it finds along the edges of streams and rivers and on rocks in or near the water. A notable habit of this species is its frequent opening and closing of its tail, scissors-like, and wagging up and down. The nest is a deep cup of roots, grasses, leaves and moss, lined with fine rootlets, fibers. Placed near running water in a rock crevice, on a rock ledge or bridge overhang, in the side of a tree.

The female lays 3-5 eggs. This species has been divided into the category of endangered species by IUCN Red List.

性質：ヒタキ科に属するこの鳥はアフガニスタン、ブータン、中国、イ ンド、ラオス、ミャンマー、ネパール、パキスタン、台湾、タイ、ベトナ ムなどにみられます。岩陰のある小川や川、川岸の草木の生い茂る 場所に生息し、カゲロウなどの昆虫類が多く発生する小川を好みま す。体長１３～１４cmで、雄は濃い青にくすんだ赤の尾、雌は薄灰色 と白い臀部が特徴です。小川や川、岩、または水の近くで見つけら れる昆虫や昆虫の卵を食料としています。この鳥は尾をハサミのよう に頻繁にパタパタさせたり、上下に揺らしたりするのが特性です。木 の根、草、葉、コケなどでできた深い器状の巣にしっかりした小枝や 繊維を巻きつけます。近くに水の流れがある岩の裂け目、岩棚、橋の 突き出し、木の中などに巣を作ります。雌は３～５個の卵を産みます。 この鳥は国際自然保護連合（IUCN）の絶滅寸前の生物種レッドリス トに挙げられています。
