It is important to know that each grade level has a specific curriculum that aligns with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). In other words, each child should have a minimum academic knowledge in reading/language arts, science, mathematics, and history-social science, regardless of the school they attend. For example, in mathematics, children in third grade need to develop an understanding of multiplication and division, including strategies for multiplication and division within 100. In reading/language arts, fifth graders are expected to quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Keys for Success 1. Work with the student on time management skills. 2. The student should be able to start and maintain conversations with a partner. 3. Try to let the student work independently on homework, but also, parents should be there for confidence and encouragement. 4. Encourage the student to discuss problems and solutions with their teacher.
