Karen Zorn, President
No matter what experiences are served up by life, we should never underestimate the real and sustaining power of giving voice to what lives within us, whether that is through an instrument, through composing a new work, or, quite literally, through our vocal cords. Here at Longy, we see our role as guiding and facilitating
experiences that nudge you towards finding your voice and how you use it in the world. Think of this viewbook as a window into a unique community that is exploring new ways to shape musical artistry. We invite you to be a part of this place, where musicians are actively choosing how we can—individually and collectively—have impact in the world around us.

Emmanuel Ramirez Jazz Guitar “I learned that the changes I needed to make to keep improving as a musician—be patient, be a better listener, be more disciplined, and find joy and beauty in everyday life—were the same needed to be a better person overall. Practice is not just about flawless execution.”
Jubilee Chen Violin “As a performer and community-based educator, I’m dedicated to advocating for classical music and finding ways for it to flourish in our society. My dreams are to eventually start a chamber music and teaching program that’s also a community pillar and creatively supports families and youth.”

I want to be an inspiration to other composers and encourage young women and women of color to join this field. Don’t compare yourself with others or worry if other people will like what you’ve written—let your journey be your own.” |

David Small David Small is an operatic baritone and Artist Teacher of Voice at Longy. His fortyyear performance career spans over 70 different roles in nearly 60 operas and most of the major oratorio repertoire. He has also taught vocal master classes and workshops about mindfulness during preparation and performance around the world and is an avid recitalist. Longy doesn’t just teach the art of music—we insist that students find their own voices and learn how to use music to make the world a better place. Everything we do has the social justice imperative as its foundation and is informed by inclusivity. One good example of that is Longy’s dedicated plan to get the music of great Latinx and Black composers normalized by giving it much more airtime. When I joined the Longy faculty, the first thing I wanted to do was create and lead a class on music and mindfulness; the Longy administration had the class in the curriculum on my first day. Mindfulness, or moment-to-moment nonjudgmental awareness, has such great potential to give musicians the ability to be truly present during their own preparation and performances. This class has been as moving for me as for the students.

Andrius Zlabys Andrius Zlabys is a Grammynominated pianist who has appeared alongside the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Rotterdam Symphony. He teaches piano at Longy School of Music and is also a composer. “I studied under many great musicians who passed on generations of knowledge and wisdom. Now I’m compelled to share that with future pianists and contribute the discoveries I’ve made along the way. Some things might have taken me five years to figure out, but now I can give my students a shortcut so they don’t have to spend as much time on it. There will always be a struggle when you’re learning, and my number one goal is to lessen that struggle for students. I think the most important thing is for students to feel completely comfortable with the instrument so they have as few limitations as possible. As a composer, I feel I’m able to bring something extra to piano teaching. When I’m in the middle of writing a piece, I tend to notice things in the other music I’m playing that I otherwise wouldn’t. Composing helps you develop a vibrant sound imagination that can lead you forward.”
Piano / Collaborative Piano With a roster of active performers on the faculty, students advance their mastery as soloists and chamber musicians with private studio instruction at its core. A weekly piano seminar expands approaches to practicing, interpretation, and programming. Students focus on technique and performance practice but also how to create compelling and innovative programs that engage a variety of audiences. Your Faculty

Noah Preminger
Members of the Latinx Student Union perform “La Llorona” (Chavela Vargas)
Noah Preminger is a tenor saxophonist and a member of the saxophone faculty at Longy School of Music. He has recorded more than a dozen critically acclaimed studio albums and played alongside many of today’s most celebrated jazz musicians. It used to be that you’d have to work really hard to find the music you were interested in, digging through bins at the record store or borrowing from your family and friends’ collections. But today’s young musicians have all kinds of music readily available to them, which means they’re getting more of a global influence. Longy really encourages that inclusive approach to music, which I think is really exciting for the future of jazz in particular. Whether you’re interested in rhythms from Native American history, or bebop, or blues, there’s a place for you here — no matter where you come from or what you’re developing into. We have a beautiful sense of community and encourage students to focus on finding their own path. It’s a lifelong journey to create different music and choose pieces that help you develop as an artist. As a teacher, I encourage all my students to consider that, and they have a blast finding things they’re passionate about.

Christine Lamprea Longy cello faculty member Christine Lamprea is wellknown for her performances alongside top symphony orchestras in the US and abroad. Throughout her career, she has explored many different genres of music and worked on her own projects, including arrangements of traditional South American tunes that have been performed around the world. I love teaching at Longy because our unique curriculum attracts interesting, self-motivated students who are curious about creating a relevant career and sustainable living as musicians, even in a time when there are lots of challenges. It’s been inspiring to help students master the cello and watch as they gain perspective on the role of the musician today. I grew up with one foot in my Colombian heritage and one foot in the United States, which has led me to think a lot about identity. I’ve always had certain music inspired by my experience in the back of my mind, which I’ve transcribed, arranged, and performed. I think it’s important to share music in a way that’s meaningful for you—everyone has to find a way to perform earnestly and authentically, with great excitement and a deep understanding of what they’re playing.

Sooyun Kim Sooyun Kim is a member of the flute faculty at Longy School of Music. She has performed as a classical soloist since she debuted with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of ten. She has performed with groups such as the Bavarian Radio, Munich Philharmonic, Munich Chamber, and Boston Pops orchestras. Recently, she has explored new possibilities for interdisciplinary connection between music, dance, film and visual art. Longy is a very warm and welcoming community where you can feel free and safe to experiment, knowing that everyone will welcome your ideas! As musicians, we have so much to learn from each other. Thinking about the modern poetry of hip hop or the power of heavy metal can teach us a lot about our own instruments, as classical musicians, or any kind of musician. We can also learn from performers in other disciplines, because musicians are interpretive artists in the same way that actors and actresses are. You can look at different actors’ performances of the same Shakespeare soliloquy, or different singers’ performances of the national anthem at a football game, and each one will be great in a different way. That teaches us about the process of interpreting music and how we can take a composer’s piece and bring it to life in our own way.

Katherine Pukinskis Kate Pukinskis teaches composition and theory at Longy School of Music. Her work has been premiered by Grammy-nominated performers such as Eighth Blackbird and Spektral Quartet, as well as members of the Chicago Symphony Chorus and San Antonio Symphony. She has been involved in a variety of cross-genre projects that combine her passion for composition, research and storytelling through music. We often have a really romantic idea of musical transformation—like you’ll hear a piece of music and have your world open up. But really, transformation happens on all sorts of scales, and it happens all the time at Longy. Some of my favorite moments in the classroom are when I see students’ concept of music change just a little bit. As a teacher, you get to see the small changes in perspective that lead towards larger transformation. Every day in my work I’m challenged to meet my students where they are in the moment and let go of the way I’ve experienced things. Exploring other art and genres helps us understand the infinite ways we can make sense of our own lives and, as result, form deeper connections with those around us. Every semester I have my students submit a list of songs they want to explore, and we get to see so many different facets to creativity.
Composition Longy composers work in a vibrant, artistic environment where public performance of new compositions is central to the experience. Composition students benefit from experienced mentoring in a supportive new music community dedicated to high standards and academic inquiry. Opportunities to write music for soloists, chamber groups, orchestras, and contemporary ensembles abound! Longy’s composition faculty ensure that students work closely with student groups and professional ensembles in the Boston community and beyond. Pamela Dellal Pamela Dellal teaches in the Vocal Studies and Historical Performance departments at Longy. She is a mezzosoprano with an interest in language, translation, and the context behind the music she sings. Her performance repertoire covers twelve centuries, and she has performed with the Sequentia medieval ensemble in Europe. At Longy, she teaches students to communicate with their audiences and find their niche in the world of music. As performers, our emotions advocate for the piece, and we have the privilege of communicating those emotions through our unique, individual sound. One of the amazing things about teaching historical performance—as well as one of the challenges of it—is that there’s a different technique for each performance system or tradition. That revelation transformed my technique, as I found all sorts of different colors I could use in each repertoire. I’m interested in helping my students discover what their bodies and voices can do, which gives them a more sophisticated suite of skills than most vocalists study. We don’t throw away technique; we work to free rather than constrict ourselves. I’m so happy to teach at a school where we encourage students to be passionate, learn with curiosity, and figure out what they’re capable of doing.

Graduate Degrees/Diplomas MASTER OF MUSIC (MM) You’re ready to take a deep dive academically and artistically in this two-year Master of Music program. Longy’s innovative Catalyst Curriculum pairs musical excellence with a focus on the skills you’ll need to become a professional musician: the ability to design experiences, produce projects, and engage audiences with exceptional musical encounters. Dedicated career coaching will help guide your studies and prepare you for what comes after graduation. GRADUATE PERFORMANCE DIPLOMA (GPD) GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN COMPOSITION (GD) This two-year program was created so you can focus intensively on training, performance, and professional opportunities. The GPD/GD program usually comes after the completion of a Master of Music degree. Compared to the Master of Music, it requires fewer academic courses and is focused on your skills and interests. If you want to dig in deeper before launching your career, this program is perfect for you. ARTIST RESIDENCY/ARTIST DIPLOMA UNDER CONSTRUCTION: We are busy reimagining and creating an Artist Resident/Artist Diploma program. We can’t wait to tell you all about it! Applications and information will be available on October 15, 2021.
Undergraduate Degrees/Diplomas UNDERGRADUATE DIPLOMA (UD) If you’re a performer or composer who is self-motivated, on a mission, and wants to fast-track your career, dive into this three-year, music-intensive program. You’ll benefit from working alongside graduate students and professional musicians in ensembles, performance, and repertory courses—and if you decide to pursue your Master of Music degree, you’ll graduate in five years rather than six. BACHELOR OF MUSIC (BM) Earn your Bachelor of Music degree from Emerson College through a joint program with Longy. Benefit from Longy’s conservatory faculty, performance opportunities, and artistic and social change programs while fulfilling your liberal arts credits at Emerson. You’ll be able to take advantage of the resources of both institutions—including the alumni network and career services—setting you up for success after graduation Programs of Study available for UD and BM Brass Organ Piano Strings Vocal Studies Woodwinds Composition
