SENIOR WILLS
Valedictorians & Salutatorian
By: Raegan Pack
Andrew Gibbs, Valedictorian The Valedictorian and Salutatorian are traditionally the top two ranking students out of their whole class. The students must spend their entire Senior year as a Lonoke Jackrabbit. They must also follow the Smart Core plan, have taken eight honors classes and two years of a foreign language. Valedictorians, Andrew Gibbs and Todd Hobson, along with Salutatorian, Michaela Brown have excelled in academic excellence. This year there is a tie between Valedictorians. This has not happened since 2007 when the tie was between Jason Barnes and Jonathan Tackett. Sharing this title “is kind of cool,” said Hobson. “I’ve never seen it happen before, and Andrew is a really good
friend of mine.” Andrew Gibbs has worked hard since the ninth grade to be at the top of his class. He never intended to become Valedictorian, but he did want “to get [his] college paid for.” He made sure he stayed on top by not slacking off and keeping “the grades” up. Gibbs has worked hard for his title as Valedictorian.
Todd Hobson, Valedictorian Todd Hobson has made it a habit to work hard over the years. Becoming Valedictorian has been a goal of Hobson’s since he started high school. His secret is that he took high school “one class at a time,” said Hobson. “You work hard for a reason.” Both Gibbs and Hobson plan on attending Arkansas
State University in Jonesboro. Normally, the Valedictorians get the Havens Valedictorian’s scholarship for $1,000 which is funded by the Havens. Since there are two Valedictorians they each get $500. Michaela Brown, Salutatorian, has also worked hard throughout her high school career. She shows her dedication with the sports she is involved in and in the classroom. Brown did not plan on becoming Salutatorian, she “just took care of school work and tried to keep all A’s.” Brown also did the work she didn’t want to do. “There were times I didn’t wanna do my homework, but then I thought about it, and I made myself get up and do it,” said Brown.
Michaela Brown, Salutatorian

Class Day Changes aspects of high school. There are two speakers for the Class History. Togethe r they share “remember when’s” of the thirteen years gone past. This year’s speakers are Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, Schafer Bourne and Pai ge Bevill. The optimist speaker is Tyler Breashears. The pessimist speaker is Bo Tidwell. The Class Historians are Ste rling Elmore and Brandon Smith. CHANGES: This year’s Class Day will not have the same activities as Class Days of the past. Normally, the seniors have prophesies . This is where two senior speakers prophesy what kind of lives or careers the other seniors will have in the futu re. Over the years, senior prophecies hav e grown more and more disrespectful and inappropriate. So, the Class of 2010 is turning over a new leaf and is presen ting a ceremony without senior prophecies . Despite this minor change, the show will go on.

New Beginning For the Future
The hallowed shell of the Lonoke High School science building barely stands before being demolished.
Construction workers stand in the rubble gazing at their accomplishments.
The many days of rain did not put a halt on the demolition process for the new school.
Newly paved roads and freshly painted walls are just a couple of the new things that students at LHS can anticipate.

Jobs During College
College is a difficult time to scrape up cash, especially with a steady stream of term papers and tests knocking at the door. That is when most college students apply for a part-time job to work between study time and the all needed free time. Picking a job is not easy, but learning the right information could determine which jobs to apply for and which ones to avoid.
Some good jobs are... I n te rn s h i p s Internships differ but there is a wide varity. It all depends on interests. Some internships are paid, while others are not. But they all provide valuable knowledge and on-the-job experience. Workstudy Workstudy is an excellent choice for someone with a tight schedule. It allows for flexible hours based on class schedules. Jobs vary depending on the person’s interests and pay depends on the job. This option allows for a stress-free job hunt. Library Assistant This is a simple job that requires sorting, shelving and checking out books, along with operating computers and copiers. It provides much needed study time, and the pay is excellent.
some more difficult jobs are... Cashier Working as a cashier requires checking out customers and handling money. It is a stressful work environment with many difficult customers, long hours and low pay. Don’t apply unless ready to work hard.
Waitress Waitressing is a good job, but a stressful one. Salary consists mostly of tips from customers and hours vary based on the place of employment, but do not provide flexible hours for a hectic, college schedule.
Dishwasher This restaurant job requires scraping, sorting and stacking dishes left by customers. It is a simple job that requires a lot of work. Do not apply if the pressure of deadlines from school is constant.
What job did you have in college? “...graphic designer...” Mrs. Merstch
“...nanny...” Mrs. Casey
“...library assistant...” Mrs. Murtha
“...workstudy...” Mrs. Hope
To qualify as an Honor Graduate, Lonoke High School Students must be a four-year graduate, have earned a 3.5 cumulative GPA and have taken at least eight scholar classes. Honor graduates earn a seal on their diploma and are the first to receive their diplomas on Graduation night.
