Project 01

Salak South New Village : A Settlement in Decay Established in 1952, Salak South New Village or Kampung Baru Salak Selatan is one of three new villages within the municipality of Kuala Lumpur. It was implemented during the Emergency Period from 1948 to 1962 as part of the government policy to deter the penetration of communist ideologies in Malaya. Salak South New Village has many distinctive characteristics that are emblematic symbols of the community and its history. These distinctive elements include but are not limited to, signs along main road and historic subdivisions. Such elements should be able to co-exist with the new developments in the area. The cornerstone of placemaking is the identification of opportunities to communicate community values. Incorporating specific place-making elements in the design is crucial to reestablishing the new village as a diverse, sustainable community rich in historical and cultural contexts, with an attractive urban landscape and a pedestrian-friendly setting. In the first of the projects, we take a look at the abandoned and rundown new village houses that scattered across the new village due to multiple issues that have accrued over the years. Issues such as the current state of the new village is not being appreciated and unable to fulfill the living needs of its inhabitants as the population continues to grow, causing the new generation of villagers to look out of the new village for better housing and abandoning the new village houses without any consideration. These abandoned new village houses slowly deteriorate and become uninhabitable and fall victim to the developers as they seek to purchase the lands and tear down the new village houses for their future property development, which have the danger of disrupting the livelihood of the new village.

Rubble from one of the recently demolished village houses , a warning to the residents living opposite that the fate of their humble village houses that represent Salak South New Village is under threat.

Crushed to bits and pieces , numb and motionless , awaiting new inhabitants to slowly grow and dwell together while embracing the fate of being terraform once more by new development.

One at a time , the village houses are slowly being torn down as they fall prey to developers who are exploiting and abusing the land across dierent terrains.

A forsaken shrine with the word '' (prosperity) craved on it , a grave reextion of the state of the village found itself.

A neglected shrine at Road 10B that had been deserted by its worshippers and beseiged by mother nature from all sides.

A couple of columns and low walls are what is the remnant of a demolished village house at Road 10B.

An abandoned kitchen of a partly demolished village house at Road 12 , exposed to the weather and encroached by the resilient of ora.

Once a lively living room of a family , now part of a slowly crumbling abandoned village house at Road 29.

Anywhere the villagers desert , either mother nature reconquers its lost land or embrace new intervention by newcomer.

Micro House : Inviting Newcomers Micro-urbanism arose from the changing framework of city and philosophy, which implies the need to explore internal facts in order to define how things interact and integrate in the micro-scale realm to further manifest the true spirit of the city and its inhabitants. Each city has a specific structure of microcosms in relation to both the natural environment and the current urban fabric, which are more critical and up-to-date than the traditional urban structure in terms of indicating the direction of a contemporary and healthy urban growth. In the second phase of the projects, a first generation new village house from the early 1950s of a microsite is selected as a renovation scheme. This scheme is an experimental scenario that a student, as a newcomer and owner not from the new village itself, is to share the house with a "mentor" as a tenant and use a portion of the house as a studio or workplace or any other purposes. This approach is a reminder that the house is to be shared with others and eventually transform the house into a semipublic space that welcomes everyone from neighbors to our fellow countrymen. The main objective is to experiment and redefine a new adaptive-reuse approach that showcases certain hints of cultural and contextual sensitivity, juxtaposing and mingling old and new to the unforeseen yet feasible way out of new urban solutions. Reposition the relevance of a new village house with ingenuity and inclusiveness in such crucial times and continuous search for means and variations of cultural and contextual identity to the architecture and landscape of Salak South New Village.

Re-Unite & Re-introduce Salak South New Village The concept of urban regeneration is an endeavor to tackle brownfield and underutilized urban areas that would deteriorate the identity, obligation and efficiency of a city. The objective is to address urban problems and to identify long-term improvements in the social, economical, physical and environmental aspects of a city that need to be transformed through involvement and collaboration between stakeholders, leading to improved physical condition of buildings, social structure, economic base and environmental conditions. In the last phase of the projects, we take a comprehensive look at the current state of the urban growth of the new village on macro scale with four essential socio-cultural components of the new village: the community hall, the market, the fish pond and the football field, examining urban development issues and presenting alternatives that could improve the overall livelihood of its inhabitants. As far as the micro-scale is concerned, we are charged with revitalizing the community hall located at Jalan 1 due to issues such as the lack of interaction within the compound and with its neighboring context. The intention is to reconnect the community and invite visitors to an immersive spine that unites and bolsters interaction within and beyond its compound. Raising awareness, inclusiveness and friendliness of the new village by opening up the perimeter and envelopes of the community hall that has also been reinstated as a cultural hub for the community. Ushering Salak South New Village into a healthier, more preservative and sustainable growth for decades to come.
