Welcome to the April Edition of Look Local Magazine! As I write this letter there’s still snow on the ground and I’ve got my heating whacked up to the max. I am hoping however that by the time this issue reaches your doorstep Spring will finally have sprung and we will be enjoying warmer, lighter evenings and possibly even getting out in the garden. If you’re looking to give your outside space a bit of a revival this year then check out page 7 where Coulon Stone offer top trends for using natural stone in the garden. Our Sound of Music feature this month has lots of information about forthcoming events and if you’re looking to host a summer party this year then our editorial by local singing duo Jenny & Steve will be of particular interest - see page 21. Whilst talking about outside music events our thoughts turn to the festival scene and thanks to the organiser of Beacons Festival we have two Family Tickets to give away - turn to page 22 for information on how to enter. We also have another opportunity to WIN TICKETS to the 19th annual Abingdon Air & Country Show. This competition can be found on Page 15 - Good Luck! And until next month, enjoy reading...

GET THE LOOK UPDATE YOUR OUTSIDE SPACE WITH THESE 2018 TRENDS By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd

Spending time gardening, whether that be landscaping your half-acre out back, or tending

to your one little window box, has proven benefits to our mind, body and soul. Cultivating plants, growing our own vegetables and tending to shrubs reduces stress and anxiety levels, improves our physical health and helps us to relax and sleep.

As we finally move in to Spring, and thoughts turn to making the most of our gardens, the Society of Garden Designers have given their predictions on 2018’s garden trends, and we’re not surprised to see so many of them include stone. Limestone – James Basson’s awarding winning garden at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show was inspired by a limestone quarry. 2018 sees hard-wearing, warmtoned limestone’s feature heavily in domestic gardens, including limestone patios, art pieces, benches, walls, pond surrounds and water features. The rustic qualities of limestone also marry well with the continued trend of creating pastoral spaces filled with wild flowers and textured edges. Wood-effect Tiles – Already popular in interior design, wood-effect tiles will also be used in our gardens. Dekton is one of the most popular brands leading this trend. An ultra-compact material made from a blend of raw materials, including stone, their surfaces are stain, scratch, heat, UV and ice resistant, as well as nonporous making it one of the world’s strongest material’s and perfect for outdoor spaces, including patios and walls. Mindfulness – Mindfulness, the process of immersing one’s self in the present and the practice of meditation, has become a buzzword over the past few years. As well as having a strong influence on our culture, the way we spend our time and the food that we eat, it’s also started influencing how we design the spaces around us, including our gardens. Stimulating our senses and creating a sense of calm with strongly scented plants like Lavender, mellow yellow pots and trickling water features. Hard-wearing natural stones like granite make ideal water features. For your free, no obligation quote on any of the above trends, or any other stone project, visit our website www.coulonstone.com.

Entertainment s the evening comes to a breathless close at a hotel in Oxfordshire, the packed room breaks into spontaneous applause as Jenny Murray, one half of the musical duo, “Jenny & Steve,” thanks the crowd for their wonderful uplifting support and happily agrees to another encore. It may be freezing outside on this Saturday evening in February but you wouldn’t know it! Another great evening and, as they’re packing the kit away, they are surrounded by enthusiastic guests, asking when they can see the duo again. Jenny does the talking - well, as Steve admits, she’s much better at it than he is! He does the leg work, packing away the state-of-the-art Bose PA and, marvels, yet again, how great the sound is, how easy it is to set up and how little space it takes. They can play anywhere!

A

own brag file includes such luminaries as Whitesnake axe wielder, Bernie Marsden, M-People sax virtuoso, Snake Davis, and Brit award winner, Beverley Craven, together with modern musicians Lucy Rose and Jack Garratt. In the small hours, he plays and records all the instruments which appear on the duo’s backing tracks. No off-the-shelf shenanigans here! “You sound like a band” people tell them “and there’s only the two of you!” Happy days!

It started for Jenny, back in the ‘80s - the decade of big hair, the Commodore 64 and Live Aid. Her professional career has taken her all over the UK. Shortly after they met, a few years back, Steve was recounting his family history, “Dad was brought up in a little mining village near Barnsley,” he said, “You won’t have heard of it.” “Wombwell?” Jenny replied - oh yes, I’ve played there. The game, for Steve, is to try to find “We love doing this.” they say. “This” means playing parties, weddings, special birthdays, receptions, corporate events, anniversaries nothing is too big or small for this fun pair! And if you want something a bit more chilled, they are happy to play an acoustic set, just about anywhere, including your front room or back garden! The repertoire is impressive - The Beatles, The Stones, up through the 70s (Rod Stewart, The Pretenders), the aforementioned 80s (Quo, The Eagles), the 90’s and noughties, landing in the present day - Ed Sheeran, Olly Murs and Adele. And they’ll play your “special” song too - just give them a few days to learn it. places she hasn’t played! Butlins, summer seasons at Blackpool, South Coast, P&O and Northern Europe. Supporting the likes of The Searchers, Jimmy James and Bucks Fizz. She is the consummate professional - and a born entertainer! Well, she loves people and loves seeing them happy! As for Steve, he’s been thrust onto the stage a little later in life, having (mis)spent his musical days as a studio owner and producer. His

Welcome to Beacon Festival... If you’re reading this right now, it means you’re curious. Then let us take you by the hand and lead you on a short journey through the festival, it will only take a minute. Imagine a sunset! You’re thinking the Bahamas, Mauritius maybe? Well what if we told you, that most beautiful sunset is much closer than you think, in fact right under your nose, here in Oxfordshire, near the longest day. Believe us yet? Then allow us to set the scene...

Music from this year’s headline acts Killerz and RustyShackle is blasting from the main stage, you have a huge smile on your face because these were the bands you’ve be wanting to see! You have discovered some new, up and coming bands this weekend but these two are your favourite. Your child is sat on your shoulders blowing bubbles and the soap keeps dripping on your forehead but you don’t mind, it’s making you laugh. Your partner is by your side having a little jig and your stomach is full from sampling some fantastic food at the stalls, but there’s still room for a nice cold beverage from the real ale tent and a Mojito (or two) from the cocktail bar. Your thoughts wander for a moment and you laugh to yourself at the thought of trying to put that tent up yesterday (why can you never remember how it goes up?). Then after relaxing in the camping chairs for a moment and congratulating yourselves for finally putting it up, you take the children to go and play in the ‘kids zone’, all laughter and giggles. You wander round the stalls and buy yourself a bowler hat, it suits you, (or so you think?). Your friends arrive, so you pull up a hay bale, sit and chat and listen to the many varied acts whilst washing it down with a local cider from the bar and enjoying a side-splitting evening watching the late night comedy acts. And then, there’s that sunset that we were talking about! It’s beautiful from this vantage point, just setting over the main stage and you can see for miles, you didn’t realise how far. Then they light the Beacon! And that smiles back again! Want to know more? Visit www.beaconfestival.net.

Fancy being a part of the action? Then why not enter our COMPETITION to WIN A WEEKEND FAMILY TICKET to one of the best family music festivals in the Chilterns? All you have to do to enter is answer the following question;

Melt away the pain of frozen shoulder...

‘Frozen’ Shoulder (nonspecific chronic shoulder pain) is a common problem, and one that results in frustrating debilitation for many suffers. Jen Webster, professional Bowen Therapist explains how this noninvasive treatment can help relieve the pain.

T

The initial pain could be a result of adhesive capsulitis, bursitis, tendonitis, referred cervical pain etc. The restrictive range of movement can often be self – perpetuating and progressively debilitating. The pain causes a reluctance to use the shoulder, and as a result the shoulder becomes stiff and progressively more inflamed. Adhesions continue to form in the joint capsule, the less movement that takes place the more the inflammation continues – it’s a vicious circle.

How may Bowen Therapy help? Early treatment, with soft tissue therapy is recommended to, in the first instance, relieve the pain and allow greater range of movement. The Bowen Technique is a remedial and holistic form of ‘hands on’ body work, gentle and effective. The careful and precise moves, which stimulate muscles and soft tissue, prompt the body to reset imbalances and start to heal injuries and chronic complaints. The experience of a treatment is gentle, subtle and relaxing. There is no manipulation and no force used. The body normally responds quickly to Bowen, making it a very time and cost effective treatment option. Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

here can be many reasons for the onset of shoulder pain but in many patients the initial complaint leads to a chronic condition with pain, loss of function and resulting stiffness. Many of my clients report difficulty sleeping, dressing, reaching up to shelves, reaching to the rear of the car, using a kettle and other limitations of lifestyle, daily activities and work – due to pain and limited range of movement.

DEALING WITH DEPRESSION could Complementary Therapies help? Recently in the media there has been a lot of news about the beneficial effects of anti-depressants for treating depression. According to a major study in the medical journal The Lancet, anti-depressants are ‘definitively good for depression and better than any placebos.’ www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk

The question of how best to treat depression has been an on-going debate for decades and it is certainly not an uncommon issue in the clients we see at Thame Therapy Clinic. Many of our clients come to us to try and get off or lessen their anti-depressants. Predominantly these people come for counselling, psychotherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, hypnotherapy or some combination of these. As in western medicine, there is no predicting what will work best as ‘depression’ is an all purpose term covering a wide range of experiences, often with complex causes. At one end of the spectrum are people with suicidal moods and barely getting out of bed, at the other end are people who are more end of tether, can’t be bothered, and angry and restless. The anecdotal feedback from most people who tolerate anti-depressants is that initially it lifted them out of the hole, but after a few months life starts to feel flat and without much interest. These people can also feel trapped and apprehensive about coming off the drugs, often in the case of those on citalopram. Typically, once these drugs are reduced, moods start to become less stable and dealing with life’s ups and downs starts to become a struggle again. This stage in the process is usually familiar because these are the difficult feelings that got on top of the client in

the first place. It is usually where complementary therapies have a role to play. Working with the mind and body in a holistic way restores a sense of integration, which had previously fractured, and it brings stability to the healing process. Clients who get better in this way typically go through the rocky feelings quicker and with more optimism.

NEW PRACTICE OPEN NOW: at CHAMPNEYS, HEALTH AND WELLBEING CENTRE, nr TRING.

Taking Care of Your Ears and Hearing Looking after your ears and hearing should be an important part of your general healthcare and wellbeing. Hearing allows you to remain socially active and able to participate fully in work and home life. We do not hesitate to get our eyesight and dental health checked regularly and the same should apply to hearing healthcare. Aston Hearing has been providing a clinical ear care service for over 6 years and in that time a considerable number of serious ear conditions have been picked up at an early stage. These include Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, Glue Ear and Acoustic Neuromas to name a few. Clinical ear care includes the visual inspection of the outer ear, ear canal and ear drum using a microscope and video otoscope. This allows you to see the condition of your ear before and after treatment. Often a build-up of ear wax or debris in the ear canal is visible and is impacting on your hearing. This can be carefully and safely removed using a gentle microsuction technique. Microsuction is a quick, comfortable, precise and effective method for removing ear wax. As it doesn’t use water, the procedure is suitable for everyone including those with ear drum perforations or a history of infections. It also avoids the need for prolonged application of oil preparations before treatment.

“I see many clients with complex ear and hearing concerns and often they have uncomfortable ear wax and reduced hearing. I use microsuction to remove the wax and it is so satisfying to see them leave with a definite spring in their step after the procedure.“ Sereta Parker, Audiologist & Clinical Ear Care Clinician - Thame

Microsuction is useful for clearing infected ears so that prescribed topical treatment can be more successful and aids the healing process by removing debris from the ear to prevent reinfection. If you are experiencing any discomfort or suspect you may have ear wax problems you should seek the help of a trained professional. You should never attempt to clear your ears by poking anything into your ear. You risk damaging your ear drum and may force wax or particulates deeper into the ear canal. Audiologists regularly see foreign objects pushed into the ear canal as people try ‘self help’ techniques with pencils, cotton buds, pen lids etc. Want to find out more? Why not visit one of our FREE monthly coffee mornings held in Amersham and Thame. The coffee mornings offer a great opportunity to discuss informally any hearing and ear care concern with our audiology team and experienced hearing aid wearers. See our website for full details. In the spotlight...

2016 Toyota C-HR EXT DYN 08

MOTORING

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.

@carwriteups The Toyota C-HR is a car you quite easily may not even have heard of. It’s very much in the shadows of its rivals, like the Nissan Qashqai.

You can pick up a new C-HR for £21,595, which is

more than £2,300 than the entry-level Qashqai, but the model we have on test here is the hybrid version with Dynamic trim – the top of the range. It costs £28,615 – so it had better be worth it. Whilst the car is a similar shape and size to the Qashqai, its roof slopes towards the rear far more so than the Nissan (think BMW X4/X6) and that means there’s less room inside. But it’s got very aggressive styling and even the entrylevel models have a lot of kit with it. The Dynamic comes with rear camera, touchscreen, DAB radio, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, sat-nav, smart entry and push-button start, park assist – and that really is skimming the surface. The C-HR shares a lot of its DNA with the Toyota Prius, so it’s only to be expected that the C-HR is available as a hybrid version which cuts fuel consumption to 72.4 miles per gallon. Its electric motor blends with a 1.8 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 122 PS and gets from a 0-62 mph in 11 seconds. It also comes with a one-speed gearbox and, if that’s raised your eyebrows, don’t worry – it’s CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and its use is on the increase. That said, the lack of a traditional engine rev will take some getting used to, unless you’re used to driving electrics or hybrids. In the C-HR, it does feel a little sluggish, even though its performance is comparable with the Qashqai and other rivals. Whilst the C-HR is very well designed for a comfortable ride, the hybrid models are heavier, meaning you’ll get a more relaxed ride in the non-hybrid models. Nevertheless, Toyota has done a good job. The extra weight of the hybrid also means it doesn’t handle quite as well as the purely-petrol-powered models, but this won’t be noticeable most of the time, unless you’re really looking to throw it round corners. If you are, the chances are you’ll be looking at a

performance model and you won’t be after a hybrid. It’s quiet around town because, of course, it’s a Toyota hybrid and at low speeds the engine is off. The problem, though, is that you don’t have to ask for very much clout from it for the onboard computers to kick the engine back into life. This somewhat defeats the point, and that’s down to the CVT gearbox insisting on higher revs. The interior improves Toyota’s reputation of dullness and it’s a nice place to be, though you won’t struggle to find better interiors elsewhere. There’s plenty of room in the front, but the sloping roof means you won’t want to be in the back if you’re tall. Boot space is also disappointing in comparison with its rivals, with the folding seats not as convenient. To sum up, the hybrid is great for fuel saving but adds plenty of drawbacks. And, coupled with the Dynamic trim, it makes it rather too expensive. The sheer amount of equipment means one of the lesser models should suffice for most. And, unless your focus is fuel economy, so too should the petrol engine – without the hybrid.
