Hello Readers, Welcome to the August Edition of Look Local Magazine. The sun has got it’s hat on, summer is here and the school holidays are in full swing! I hope you are all enjoying lighting up the BBQ’s and cooling down in the paddling pool with your families. I don’t know about you, but I think so far we have been pretty lucky with the weather this year and I’m having a whale of a time lapping it up with my daughter. This summer holiday - like many mummies (& daddies) is an extra special one for me as its the last one before my baby girl is off to big school! Time really does fly once you have kiddies doesn’t it... This month I took to social media with a request for local Photographers to send me their favourite photo of ‘Summer in the Chilterns’. I was inundated with some wonderful shots which made my job of choosing one for this editions front cover especially difficult. After much deliberation I chose Coombe Hill Monument by Sarah Minchin Photography. I’m sure you will agree its a great shot and really depicts the Chilterns. If you’ve not made a visit to the monument yet, why not pack up a picnic and take the children there this summer, it’s a beautiful, picturesque spot. To see more of Sarah Minchin’s work visit www.sarahminchinphotography. co.uk. And thank you to everyone else who sent in their photos. I will be continuing to run with this idea for the foreseeable so I look forward to receiving many more shots over the coming months. This months issue features TWO competitions. For your chance to WIN a Family Ticket to the Big Top Circus in Long Crendon or a Pair of Tickets to this years food extravaganza, Thame Food Festival, turn to page 18/19 for rules on how to enter. Good Luck! And until next month, enjoy reading

In the spotlight... Skoda Kodiaq

MOTORING

Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.

Skoda’s Kodiaq is a competitor to SUVs, such as the Kia Sportage. The car isn’t massive, but it’s big enough to fit up to seven people across three rows of seats. There’s a five-seater only version, too.

I tested the car in Edition 2.0 TDI 190PS 4x4 DSG seven-

seat guise, which means lots of equipment comes as standard. Kit incorporates 19-inch polished alloys; seven airbags; blind spot detection and a sat-nav with an eightinch touchscreen. The car is also furnished with leather and has electrically adjustable front seats. The Kodiaq could never be described as a cheap car, especially in seven-seat Edition format. £35,360 will need to be handed over if you’re paying for it up front, but there’s no denying you get a lot for your money. And that includes a very fine diesel engine. With 190 horses pulling under the bonnet, the 2.0 oilburner accelerates from zero to 62mph in just 8.8 seconds, while the top speed is 130mph. There’s lots of low down shove, making the 2.0 TDI 190PS Kodiaq a perfect towing vehicle. And the drive is made easy, thanks to the smoothshifting seven-speed automatic transmission. This power makes the Kodiaq a bit of a giggle to drive on the right roads, too. It doesn’t lean much in corners, which is unusual for an SUV, and this means you can hoon it around twisty rural routes without becoming unstuck. Naturally, the car’s 4x4 ability helps traction on tarmac – and off. Although this Skoda should never be seen as an out-and-out mud-plugger. On the black-stuff, you can dial into the kind of handling that suits you and the road. The Skoda’s adaptive suspension and steering system (named DCC) gives you three choices. You can motor along in ‘Normal’ mode. This gives a firm ride with light-ish steering. Then you get ‘Sport’ mode, which weights up the steering and gives you a stiffer ride. This is great for cornering, but can jar after a while. Then you have the ‘Individual’ setting, where you can create a mix of the above. The Kodiaq’s cabin is comfy, classy and clever all at the same time. There are lots of storage places, and the earlier mentioned touchscreen is intuitive to operate. In the second and third tier of seating, the SUV has strengths that contend with the best its seven-seat adversaries can

06

@carwriteups

provide. The chairs in the middle provide plenty of head and legroom for two adults, and the third row of seating, while cramped for most adults and taller teens, are great for smaller kids. But if you’ve no need for the third set of seats some days, you can collapse them, making the boot seem comparable to a canyon in size. The Kodiaq is a very practical, comfortable and fine-performing SUV, and it brings the fight to the likes of the Kia Sorento, Nissan X-Trail and the Mitsubishi Outlander. Indeed, all the above should be worried because this Skoda possesses a winning blend of ingredients that will undoubtedly entice many people towards the Czech-made marque.

GET THE LOOK Keep your granite worktop gleaming with our

cleaning and caring tips. By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd We’re a nation of kitchen lovers, spending on average £7000 redecorating them, and a whopping three years of our lives in them. With all that time and money invested in one room, we want them to look lovely for as long as possible, including the most used feature of our kitchen, the worktop.

Because of its durability and wide range of design options, granite is still an incredibly popular worktop choice. So to keep your granite looking its best, we’ve put together our top tips for maintaining that shiny surface. Make sure it’s properly sealed - whilst granite is relatively non-porous compared to its softer sisters marble and limestone, it’s still important to seal any granite surface to help boost its stain resisting properties. Your kitchen fitter or stone mason should ensure that their product is correctly sealed before fitting; however it’s always worth double checking yourself. You can then reseal your top every 1-2 years to really stop the staining. We recommend Dry Treat’s Stain Proof Plus, which you can buy on their online store. Avoid using scouring pads - cleaning your granite worktop with a scouring pad may scratch it and lift layers of sealer leaving your top more vulnerable to staining. Instead use a soft dish cloth. Avoid using bleach or other harsh chemicals - Similarly to scouring pads, abrasive bleaches and harsh chemicals can lift the sealer and erode the stone. Instead use a simple dish soup or mild cleaning spray to wipe your surfaces. Buff your Worktop - granite can appear dull or smeary overtime. We recommend lightly buffing your worktop once a week using a stone polish and soft cloth. Pledge have a good multi-surface polish or for a really shiny surface, we recommend Granite Clean and Sheen which you can buy online from Stone Equipment International or by emailing us at Coulon Stone, info@coulonstone.com.

T

hame Food Festival are delighted to announce that Lucie Greenwood from The Milk Shed in Weston on the Green, alongside her husband Mark Ellis, will be hosting and running a Pop-Up Restaurant at the Festival. Lucie will also be demonstrating her culnary skills on The Chef’s Stage on the Saturday. Commenting on their prescence at the food festival his year, Lucie saud “We’re so excited to be re-locating The Milk Shed to Thame for this year’s festival. I’ve been visiting since before I opened the café and think it’s one of the best foodie events in the calendar; it attracts such an inspirational and talented bunch of lovely chefs and producers that I usually eat and drink myself stupid. I was delighted to be invited to do my first demo a couple of years ago, and although sick with nerves the audience were just lovely, genuinely interested in cooking, and I quickly calmed down and now can’t wait to be back on the demonstration stage this year for the third time. Meanwhile the team will be busy cooking up a storm at the pop-up serving some of our old stalwarts such as the deep-filled cheesy tart and our amazing spicy chorizo with aioli, plus a few brunch classics, the Milk Shed club sandwich, and I’ll be making the best use of all the new autumn produce available to create an array of fantastic colourful salads. We plan to create a rustic version of The Milk Shed channelling all the same shabby/cool vibes, serving our delicious food in a casual setting. We will have long sharing tables, and seating will be allocated on a first come first served basis, just the same as the café, so no bookings necessary, just turn up when you fancy – we’ll serve the menu all day.” This years event takes place over two days, Saturday 30th September and Sunday 1st October at Thame Show Ground and forms part of the British Food Fortnight which Festival Ambassador, Raymond Blanc is a patron of. Supported by the man himself, this year will see over 150 artisan producers alongside demonstrations from many leading chefs and bakers. There is now an entrance fee of £5.00 (children under 16 are free).

Think FEW... By absorbing several times its own weight in water, fibre softens stools and adds bulk, preventing blockages in the colon. The same is not true for the refined flour found in white bread, cakes and biscuits.

We chew and then swallow our food, to launch

it its long journey through our digestive tract. It is normal for it to linger a while in certain places but sometimes lingering turns to languishing and then to clogging…with unpleasant consequences! Constipation is one of the most common medical complaints. It is well known that fibrous vegetables, whole grains, beans, lentils and fruit, especially pineapple, sun-dried apricots and figs, provide the fibre needed to speed up the processing of food through the gut. They are also rich in nutrients and are much better than relying on wheat bran alone.

If you are dehydrated, your body will resort to drawing back fluids from your bowel, which will not only cause constipation, and also headaches. Drink plenty of still water at room temperature between meals. If you suffer with irritable bowel you might benefit from taking probiotic supplement, as well as eating live yogurts. Exercise also keeps things moving. As you chew, just think FEW : Fibre, Exercise, Water and there’ll be no hold ups in your system! Written by Joanna Lewis

Shoulders and Knees…. “Many operations could be unnecessary” says leading surgeon There is a possibility that your Orthopaedic Consultant will tell you that surgery isn’t the ideal option for treating shoulder and knee injuries. This may come as a surprise, given that surgeons are trained to operate!”

This

news headline (Ref: The Guardian) in June certainly got my attention and reminded me of an article I wrote for Look Local in October 2015, when I made reference to a Radio 4 ‘Inside Health’ interview with Professor Andrew Price, Orthopaedic surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals (OUH). The discussion explored the usefulness of arthroscopic knee surgery, in the light of evidence that intervention is not always required, or indeed useful. The conclusion was that of ‘watchful waiting’ to see if the knee got better with conservative treatment. Treatment such as Bowen Therapy.

The leading surgeon is Professor Andy Carr, an orthopaedic surgeon also at OUH, who has cast doubt on the efficacy of certain types of elective surgery, whereby the benefits could be partly, or entirely explained by patient’s expectations of symptomatic relief following (invasive) treatment - a placebo effect. Prof Carr is currently involved in the first placebo, controlled trial of acromioplasty. It seems likely that surgeons will need to look at other non-surgical ways to achieve health improvements for patients.

How may Bowen Therapy help?

Early treatment with this soft tissue therapy is recommended, in the first instance to relieve the pain and allow greater ranger of movement. The careful and precise moves, which stimulate muscles and soft tissue, prompt the body to reset imbalances and start to heal injuries and chronic conditions. Bowen is suitable for all, those with sporting injuries and those with long term aches and pains. Bowen is a holistic, gentle hands on body work therapy, your treatment always includes a consultation, whereby your past medical history, recent accidents, injuries and lifestyle are discussed, noted and addressed - this is so important! The Shoulder Study suggests that medics have limited time to spend with patients. Therefore, after consultation there needs to ideally be psychological and therapeutic support in place for patients. My experience, consistently, reveals that patients are offered pain meds, scans, injections and surgery, which often doesn’t help, and then they come to see me. Please note that I am not able to diagnose or suggest avoidance of surgery; as a therapist I work with your medical advisors to achieve the best possible outcome for your health and wellbeing.

For further information, please contact me:

Jen Webster Bowen | Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com T: 07768 188664

Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

Restricted shoulders, due to a bony spur are often treated with keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery called an acromioplasty. An injured knee suffering with torn cartilage has the very common arthroscopic menisectomy. The suggestion is that these procedures may be replaced with alternative treatments.

Acupuncture

Health & Wellbeing

What Health Issues could Benefit from it

As an Acupuncture practitioner, Thame Therapy Clinic’s Andy Roscoe sees endless applications of this therapy for everyday health problems. In this article he summarises the most common issues he treats regularly, using Acupuncture, so you to see just how many health ailments can benefit from this form of complementary therapy. 1. Tiredness & Stress. This is the main complaint of about 60% of my patients. Typically I see this in working women in their 30/40’s with 2/3 children and a partner who works long hours. 2. ‘Pain’. Often acute physical strains from eg. Picking up a heavy weight or maybe a whiplash car accident, or a sports injury. But also physical pain coming from stress, such as sitting for a long time in front of a computer, or arthritic pain in the joints from damp and cold. 3. ‘Emotional Overload’ causing mental stress and physical symptoms. This is very common and underlies most of the other issues I see. Helping people unblock emotionally is one of Acupuncture’s great strengths. 4. Chronic on-going conditions such as headaches or IBS or menstrual pains where medical drugs don’t really address the cause of the problem. Many people are ground down by these issues and feel their lives are restricted. 5. Patients who need help detoxing and strengthening. This could be during treatments for cancer or those getting off drugs like cigarettes or alcohol. 6. Fertility Issues. An increasing numbers of women (and men) use Acupuncture to help with fertility issues, including IVF assistance. 7. Some lesser known Acupuncture applications which sometimes feel like ‘miracles’. In this category come turning breech babies, overcoming the terror of flying, and controlling menopausal sweats.

Editorial Feature

Integrity Wills & Guardianship Wills Protecting your family’s future.

I’ve been named as an executor. What does this mean? I

f you have been asked to be an executor, you will be named as such in the deceased’s Will. Around six million people have experience of acting as the executor of a Will but just 4% realise that they are legally responsible for the accurate distribution of the estate that is entrusted to them.

So what does the role of the executor entail? An executor is responsible for administering the estate and is accountable to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the beneficiaries. The process of administrating the estate can be daunting given the legal paperwork, tax calculations and various administrative tasks that need to be accurately completed. It typically involves applying for the Grant of Probate, dealing with all aspects of their assets (such as property, shares and personal possessions), settling debts and paying any Inheritance Tax and Income Tax. Whatever’s left is transferred to the beneficiaries. In order to carry out their duties, executors need to have a copy of the Will along with relevant financial information on the deceased’s holdings. It is important that they keep a clear record of each step they take during the process, especially if Inheritance Tax is payable on the estate. This way, there is a clearly documented audit trail should any questions need to be answered at a later date. Executors are subject to a statutory ‘duty of care’ under the Trustee Act of 2000, meaning they must act in the best interests of the estate and beneficiaries. Consequently, they can be held financially and legally liable for any mistakes made in handling the deceased’s assets.

How long will it take?

Usually two executors are appointed in the Will

and the time it takes to administer the estate can depend on whether the executors agree on how to proceed. As a result, some people chose to appoint a professional executor who can provide independent and impartial advice. The time needed to administer an estate will also depend on its size and complexity, but on average this will take between 9 – 12 months for a professional. Administering an estate yourself can be an overwhelming process, particularly as executors will also be dealing with the loss of a loved one. Dealing with bereavement is never easy and people react differently to the emotional stress it can cause. For some executors the estate administration process can seem overwhelming. However, you can chose to appoint a specialist to do the work on your behalf.

Why you should consider speaking to a professional? The advantage is that the firm can take on full legal responsibility for administering the estate from beginning to end. This can provide executors with peace of mind and means that they have one less thing to worry about when dealing with the loss of a loved one.

At Integrity Wills, we have partnered with Kings Court Trust, one of the UK’s leading estate administration specialists. They have helped over 7000 families receive their inheritance in the last 15 years. If you would like to find out more about estate administration and how I can help support you and your family, please contact me.
