Hello Readers,
Welcome to the August Edition of Look Local Magazine! The summer holidays are now in full swing. How are you finding them? Enjoying the more chilled out mornings and time with your little munchkins or are you starting to pull your hair out already? I find the school holiday period bitter sweet and also very expensive at times which is why Team Penfold are taking advantage of this incredible weather we are experiencing and heading outside to create our own, free fun. And what better place to start than with a bit of den-building. This evokes wonderful nostalgic childhood memories for me so I can’t wait to recreate them with my own children this summer. For some inspiration on how to create your secret hideaway turn to page 6. For the techy’s amongst us, you might like our article on page 20 about the best Summer Gadgets and if spending more time with the family makes you reflect more about the future then turn to page 25 for information about the importance of making a Will. Another fun thing to do locally is the Midsomer Murders Tour in Thame and we have teamed up with the organisers to offer THREE LUCKY READERS the change to WIN a PAIR OF TICKETS to experience these informative and enjoyable tours for yourself. To read more and enter the competition turn to page 15. I also wanted to thank local photographer, Anna Lawler, for her wonderful photo used on our Front Cover this month. I think it captures summer fun perfectly. To see more of Anna’s work, visit www.annalawlerphotography.com Until next month, soak up the sun - but sunscreen (advice article on Pg 26) and enjoy reading...

Summer Holiday Fun
DEN-BUILDING
create memories that will last a lifetime
My eight-year-old is a den-builder. Wherever we go he constructs a dwelling. If we’re at the beach he’s off foraging for driftwood to make a shelter, on a forest walk he stacks branches and covers them with leaves and moss, ‘for insulation and camouflage!’. If he’s stuck indoors on a rainy day he’ll use chairs, cushions and blankets. He is one of life’s builders and should there ever be a zombie apocolypse and we have to restart civilisation from scratch I want to be on his team!
If you could distil childhood into a single activity, it would probably be den-building. Most kids love it, be it scavenging building materials from forest debris, to stacking chairs back-to-back and raiding the airing cupboard for linen. Den-building is also a great family activity. It requires teamwork and communication and is a good way to spend quality time together. Even the smallest children can gather leaves, or cushions if you’re indoors, and add decorations. My son loves to use fairylights on his more elaborate indoor structures. But essentially, all a den needs is a frame and a cover. Planning is everything though. What materials are available? The beach will provide different building materials to the forest, or the sitting room. Think about how you’ll support the roof. If it all collapses, don’t stress, what have you learned? Den-building is about the process as much as the final result. A sturdy frame: Chairs and tables are good for building a structure quickly (good for very young children). Bamboo canes are light, strong and fairly cheap. Broom handles or tent poles are also good. Bendy sticks or plastic bendy pipes can make an interestingly shaped den. Fallen branches make you feel like Robinson Crusoe (but don’t destroy trees). Stuff for tying: String or rope; rags - try cutting up old T-shirts. Shelter Materials: Bright materials can help you turn your den into a palace, fancy restaurant or castle. If you want to leave your den outside you’ll need waterproof material, such as plastic dust sheets or tarpaulin. You can use large leaves a bit like tiles but you need lots and they must overlap properly so the rain runs off them and not into your den. It’s fun experimenting though. If you do use leaves, ferns and moss remember that these are the habitats for little creatures so exercise some care. DON’T use glass, or very heavy fence panels, tins of paint or branches cut from living trees. If you’re outside respect the environment! Don’t damage the den site - when your den is dismantled it should leave no trace. Don’t discard litter; take your rubbish home with you. Take lots of photos or videos of your efforts. One afternoon building a den in the company of your favourite people will also build memories that last a lifetime. By Sarah Davey

GET THE LOOK Long live Lapitec – The strongest stone By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
surface out there.....
For a long time now, granite has been leader of the pack when it comes to low maintenance,
long-lasting worktop materials. A hard-wearing, natural stone granite can withstand the rough and tumble of even the busiest family homes. But it’s time to stand down granite, as there is a new material on the block, even stronger, more heat resistant, completely stain and scratch resistant, and even antibacterial.
Developed and manufactured in Italy, Lapitec is a sintered stone created from 100% highly refined minerals and fired at over 1,200˚C, allowing it’s developers to create a material with a similar chemistry and mineralogy to granite, but with increased durability and maintenance properties. This man-made stone is so strong, it not only works well in kitchens and other interior projects, but as property cladding, patios and even outdoor furniture. In fact, it’s so tough, stone fabricators need special tools to cut and polish it. Up-keeping your Lapitec surface is virtually non-existent as it’s completely scratch resistant, non-absorbent, mould resistant and carries antibacterial properties. And finding a Lapitec surface that fits your project isn’t hard, as it comes in a broad range of colours, including cool greys, veined whites and plum purples. Seven different textures, from glossy, to flame brushed, as well as three thicknesses – 12mm, 20mm and 30mm. Coulon Stone Ltd are approved Lapitec fabricators, so visit our showroom in Stokenchurch (junction 5 of the M40), to look at samples, or contact us on 01494 484333, or info@coulonstone.com for a free, no obligation quote for your Lapitec project.

a PAIR of TICKETS to the exciting MIDSOMER TOUR in Thame. Did you know that Thame is one of the most used filming locations in the popular ITV series Midsomer Murders?
It features regularly as Causton or as one of the many villages in Midsomer. Locations like the Town Hall, Thame Museum, Rumsey’s Chocolaterie, Swan Hotel, Spread Eagle Hotel, Coffee House and Black Horse Pub Brasserie have appeared in different episodes. Midsomer Murders is watched by 6.5 million in the UK and millions more in over 100 countries. People see the show on TV and visit ‘Midsomer County’. Since last year, Midsomer volunteers have been running popular weekly walking tours of Thame from April to October. Specially trained Midsomer guides point out the filming locations, talk about their connection with Midsomer, and include snippets on Thame’s historic past. The tour lasts up to an hour and a half, and take place every Wednesday from 11.00am. The tour starts inside Thame Museum (79 High Street, OX9 3AE). Bespoke tours are possible for groups of at least four (email thamemidsomertours@gmail.com for details). Tickets are £7.50 each and may be purchased online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ thamemidsomer. NEWS & EVENTS in our region Thame Food Festival attractions are really expanding this year...
This
year’s Thame Food Festival is promising to be a real destination for the last weekend in September (29th and 30th) with a myriad of extensive food and drink experiences. The very latest to join the already packed programme are Bell Kitchens. They will be running free pizza making workshops throughout the event using Clementi wood fired pizza ovens. This will be topped off by several interactive demonstrations from the Clementi team themselves who are coming over from Italy, especially for the event to show what these ovens can really do! Alongside will also be some other demonstrations revealing the many different ways you can cook using one of their intriguingly named products - the Big Green Egg! This is not only a barbecue for grilling steaks and sausages, but a smoker, a roaster and a pizza maker and even a baker. And just like last year they will be joined by Farmer Lou their preferred meat supplier - who will be offering delicious sausage rolls and serving up a storm with their hog roast. So obviously, as is always the case at Thame Food Festival there will be sampling galore! If the food side of things is not enough to tempt you, then it is worth visiting the Bell Kitchen stand to find out more about their very latest product called Uberstar. This is a dry mix that you add to alcohol to make a cocktail! The simple process is to steep the dry mix with vodka or Bacardi (depending on the cocktail). At the festival the Bell Kitchen team will be using it to mix up a jug with soda or juice and serving small samples in shot glasses. If you love it, then the dry non-alcoholic mix will be available to purchase, take away and make at home. As Lotte Duncan Patron and Organiser of Thame Food Festival says; “Building on last year, we wanted to mix up Thame Food Festival even more this year, by extending the event in a variety of different ways. The result is going to be so many more different activities, experiences and demonstrations; some of which we are still working on. So with so much going on, many will find they want to come for the day or even extend their visit over the weekend in order to make the most of the event, which is why we are also now offering the option for a two day ticket for advance bookings.”

Sit outside with a drink on
a warm summer evening? Don’t mind if I do, but I do mind being eaten alive by mosquitoes! This year I am installing a Bug Zapper Light Bulb. The bulb provides two different modes that can be chosen with the wall switch: Anti-mozzie or light plus anti-mozzie. The bulb’s 360-degree LED blue-violet light band emits a wavelength of 365-420nm, which attracts mosquitoes. It’s safe for human’s, as there is no radiation, it’s non-toxic and chemical-free. Really intense summer sun calls for a parasol. Now you can choose one with solarpowered internal lights which will also charge a small electronic device like a phone. Your teens will love you. something to sit on when out and about over the summer. Whether you are going camping or for a walk on the beach a blanket is a useful item. Unfortunately, they can be a bit bulky. Enter the Pocket Blanket, available from good camping shops. Made of water repellent, puncture resistant, lightweight nylon, they fold into a 3 x 2-inch (7.5 x 5 cm) pouch. It fits two people lying down or four people sitting, and its weighted corners will help to keep it from blowing around. It’s irritating when one party member disappears, and you have little or no phone reception to let them know you’re waiting. Try an off-grid communication device like Gotoky. It’s like a tiny modern-day walkie-talkie which connects to your phone with Bluetooth, has a range of 4 miles and lets you contact other people who have downloaded the app, bypassing the need for mobile coverage. With two per pack you can text or even share grid locations. As a bonus communications are end-to-end encrypted! By Tom Hancock

Anxiety
Health & Wellbeing
- How can Complementary Therapies help... Over 3 million people in the UK suffer from Anxiety annually. Bodily symptoms include a fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, nausea, tightness in the chest and sweating. In the mind, fear, dread and catastrophic thoughts can feel unbearable. Steph Clarkson, Hypnotherapist and Holistic Therapist at Thame Therapy Clinic, describes how a combination of hypnotherapy, reiki, and life coaching can help with anxiety
T
hese reactions are caused by the body’s ‘fight, flight or freeze’ response where the body is pumped with adrenalin and other chemicals to help us to deal with a physical, emotional or social threat. This natural response can be life-saving, however many find anxiety occurs in circumstances that are only mild potential threats such as a stressful workplace, visiting new places, driving or socialising. When our anxious response is disproportionate to events it can seem debilitating and lead to a loss of confidence as we struggle to move forward or complete everyday tasks. The good news is, anxiety can be managed and alleviated. As a hypnotherapist and coach, the first step is often to ‘change the script’ during anxious situations. I describe emotions as ‘dashboard lights’. Switching on anxiety is the brain asking us: are we in danger? Ignoring the question can cause the brain to shout louder, so acknowledge the message and act, even if it’s reassuring ourselves that we’re not in danger. Shifting your internal language can have
rewards. Phrases such as, ‘I try so hard to fight it’ and ‘it’s a constant battle’ can exacerbate the problem and induce adrenalin. By working with hypnosis, meditation and mindfulness, many clients discover that a compassionate yet distant stance to their emotions helps. This can be achieved through practising calming selftalk, focusing on the senses and rationalising techniques. Further therapeutic sessions may release limiting beliefs or reframe negative past events that may have encouraged the anxiety helping the client move forward with a sense of confidence and capability. As an alternative approach, energy healing techniques such as reiki, EFT (known as ‘tapping’) can release ‘trapped’ feelings and balance over activity in the body’s energy field. There are many approaches that can support anxiety, so whether you’d enjoy working on anxiety through talking therapies, feel energy healing may help you make the shift or simply enjoy the soothing benefits of aromatherapy, start your healing journey today.

Fibromyalgia, Myalgic Encephalitis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ... Fibromyalgia (FM) and the related conditions of Myalgic Encephalitis (ME) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are massively debilitating. It is difficult to provide a definitive diagnosis given that symptoms can be related to many other conditions, such as Lupus. Investigations can prove time consuming, with a process of elimination, and criteria for the patient to have experience at least 3 months in pain. This process can be very stressful. There are no lab tests or X-rays that are able to identify this chronic condition. Once given a diagnosis the patient is faced with no effective conven-tional medical solution. There is no clear cause and no clear solution. Many of my clients present in my clinic with either a diagnosis of MF, ME, CFS or with symptoms and issues that can match any of these conditions. The history, for each, is usually the same: ‘I’ve been to the doctors, I’ve had tests (bloods), I’m in pain, my lifestyle is limited, I’m off work’ or ‘ The prescribed painkillers aren’t helping and I’m not sure about taking antidepressants” and ‘I was referred to a pain clinic but really the exercises are too much for me’, and I was told to manage the pain’ Some patients are told that they imagine the pain. This is such a common scenario in my clinic, generally the clients I see are female, although children and teenagers present with the same issues. For each this is a long term chronic disorder.
- Pain - Fatigue - Reduced concentration - Anxiety / Depression
- Headaches - Inability to work / concentrate - Lifestyle is severely limited: work, school, sport etc - Reduced social interaction
The underlying causes are not know, however there is substantial evidence to suggest that stress, trauma, injury and post viral situations are seriously considered.
How may Bowen Therapy help? I take a full medical history from every client; we may discuss or unearth, past injuries, grief and lifestyle. Whilst the treatment is hands on, the emphasis is on how the client presents and attention is given to each individual and their lifestyle needs and wants. Pain, however, is real and every client wishes that to be addressed. Bowen Therapy, with the hands on, gentle, noninvasive, non-manipulative movements over soft tissue aims to help the body relax and promote healing. This treatment is through clothing. In my clinic I have helped many clients on a path to leading a full and active life. With my skills as a Bowen / Neuro Structural Practitioner your individual concerns will be addressed. Making your Will Some important decisions Having
taken the decision to make your Will, possibly for the first time, there are a few points your should consider before committing yourself to an appointment with a professional Will Writer. The consultants job is to take your instructions and translate these into your Will, creating a document which accurately reflects your wishes. The Will needs to be understood by your executors and most importantly, The Probate Court, to ensure that it is proved quickly to minimise any problems which may occur causing delays and possible hardship to your loved-ones. There are some important questions which you need to consider before meeting with your consultant. By having many of the answers available it will leave more time to discuss the other important issues which may arise during the consultation.
THE APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTORS
your consultant will be able to advise upon the suitability of such schemes. If you have a child with additional needs, who are likely to require specialist care either at home or in the care of the Local Authority, a trust will be required to ensure adequate funds are available for their future.
PROPERTY How you hold your property will determine how it passes on after your death. As ‘joint tenants’ your share will pass on to the survivor automatically. If you wish to pass your ‘interest’ in the property to your children or others, you should hold your property as ‘tenants in common’. More in-depth information can be discussed with your consultant. Other items to consider will be, specific gifts and funeral wishes. Only use a trainer professional to help you make your Will.
You do not need to appoint other ‘professionals’ to act as an executor or trustee of your estate, unless there is the likelihood of a Trust arising. Professional executors will charge your estate to act, and in many cases, for duties which a layperson could have done. It may be better therefore, to appoint a member of your family, a prime beneficiary or close friend to act. Remember, an executor can also be a beneficiary. If you do need to appoint a professional executor, you could opt for either a solicitor, chartered accountant or a Trust Corporation to act on your behalf. Your consultant will be able to advise on the best option for your circumstances.
APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIANS If you have children (under the age of 18) you will need to appoint guardians. It may be helpful to make at least one guardian a joint executor as they have a right to money from your estate to help towards the upbringing of your child. This amount can be restricted to a certain amount or could be left in a trust fund. Again

Stay safe in the sun this summer... Don’t skimp – You need to apply a shot glass-sized amount of suntan lotion in the morning, then reapply every couple of hours. Skimping means you aren’t protected! High is not necessarily best – It’s better to reapply factor 30 every couple of hours than to apply factor 70 once.
Choose Broad Spectrum – These sunscreens provide the maximum protection against the widest range of UV wavelengths.
Don’t forget - the eyes, the tip of the nose, the tops of the feet, the lips, and near the hairline and scalp. These are the places people most commonly suffer sun-burn.
Apply even if you’re not at the beach – Incidental sun exposure from walking down the street, driving with the windows open and sitting in front of a window, account for most of our exposure to UV throughout our lives. Apply suntan lotion wherever you are! Reapply – Even water-resistant sunscreen needs regular reapplication. If it’s expired throw it out – Expired sunscreen breaks down and is less effective. In the spotlight... New SsangYong Musso 2018 review
Test drive location: Wiltshire UK
MOTORING
Tim Barnes-Clay recently test drove the new Ssangyong Musso. Here are his thoughts on the Korean pick-up truck...
You can try putting lipstick on a pig, but it still won’t make it beautiful – unless you’re into pigs. And that’s the point here. Unless you like pick-up trucks, you won’t be into the Ssangyong Musso.
Now this name might be familiar to you. It’s a moniker
that was used way back in the early 90s on a pug ugly SUV. This vehicle though is a strict pick-up with 4x4 capability. I happen to think it’s handsome too – and I’m not even into swine. There’s a reason for its good looks - the Musso has the identical body-on-chassis construction as the Ssangyong Rexton SUV. Indeed, it even has the same dashboard, which makes it feel quite upmarket. There are pliable materials covering the dash, the steering wheel is fully adjustable, and the switchgear doesn’t feel like it’s out of a Tonka toy. The South Korean made pick-up is also furnished with kit such as an infotainment system, which is decent by any standards. The 9.2-inch display in some models is large, luminous and easy to operate. It also boasts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, the Musso houses a remarkably hi-resolution reversing camera which even enables you to observe the tow bar. This is handy if you are lining-up up a trailer to lug.
Things do recover, however, when the South Korean’s cab is full. And with a tonne of cargo in the rear load bed, it irons itself out considerably. The price-tag of the Ssangyong Musso makes you forgive its so-so handling. It’s cheaper than Mitsubishi’s L200 for starters. There are four trim levels to select, too. While the entry level EX is the most workhorse-like, it sits on alloy wheels and contains lots of factory-fitted equipment, including air conditioning, Bluetooth, and DAB radio. Also standard on the Musso is a segment-leading seven-year, 150,000mile warranty. That, more than anything, demonstrates how much faith Ssangyong has in its new model.
Towing is something that the new Ssangyong Musso is brilliant at. It’s the only pick-up in its segment that can haul a 3.5-tonne trailer while carrying up to a tonne in the load bed. The Mercedes-Benz obtained 2.2-litre oil-burner it uses is also enjoyed in the Rexton. However, the Musso is fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission rather than the seven-speed auto employed by the Rexton. It has lots of grunt and is smooth compared with, say, Ford’s Ranger.
PRO’s & CON’s
There’s plenty of space up front, and when it comes to rear passenger room, the Musso beats its rivals, with only Nissan’s Navara coming close. And behind the wheel, whether towing or not, the pick-up feels okay-ish – in a straight line at least. The only fly in the ointment for the Musso is its rear springs. They bounce pugnaciously over ruts, while the somewhat soft damping battles to keep the pick-up’s frame in check.

BALZAC AND THE LITTLE CHINESE SEAMSTRESS
by Dai Siji
This is a remarkable little book, considered by many to be a modern
classic – so much so that it has already found itself on some GCSE English Literature syllabuses. Don’t let it put you off though. I really urge you to give it a try – after the first few pages you will be hooked. Set in 1971, Sijie’s novel follows the story of two middle class city boys, forcibly removed to the Chinese countryside for re-education as part of the Cultural Revolution. Guilty only of having doctors and dentists for parents, they are subjected to punishingly hard physical work and appalling living conditions. Two things make their lives bearable – the presence nearby of the beautiful Little Seamstress, and a collection of books, first borrowed and then audaciously stolen from a friend, which open up a world beyond the mountains.
Sijie’s story crackles with wit and humour throughout – the opening scene, in which the narrator finds himself playing a tune hastily retitled ‘Mozart is Thinking of Chairman Mao’ sets the tone instantly. But this is also a story about the power of words and the power of desire, and as such is beautifully told. Each character is vividly drawn, from the Little Seamstress herself to the grotesque village headman. Comic episodes are interwoven skilfully with passages exploring the transformative power of literature, and before you know it you have reached the inevitable yet poignant conclusion, which will stay with you for a long time afterwards.
ESIO TROT by Roald Dahl
“Mr Hoppy” lived in a small flat high up in a tall concrete building. He lived alone. He had always been a lonely man and now that he was retired from work he was lonelier than ever. There were two loves in Mr Hoppy’s life.’ And so the short story of Esio Trot begins. This is pure, classic Roald Dahl, with silly words, silly characters, and, of course, wonderful illustrations by Quentin Blake. So, what are his two loves? Well, there are the flowers he grows on his balcony, and then there is Mrs Silver a widow who lives in the flat below him. They only see each other when out on their balconies and Mr Hoppy has never had the courage to say more than a few words to her. But then a chance conversation changes everything. Mrs Silver has a pet tortoise called Alfie and she is concerned that Alfie doesn’t seem to grow. If only she knew how to help him grow. Mr Hoppy formulates a plan to help Alfie grow and at the same time win Mrs Silver’s affections. A plan involving silly words, a metal tube and a LOT of pet tortoises!
