GET THE LOOK T
Mix up your kitchen with one of the biggest trends of recent years....
here’s been a move away from the stark, shiny kitchen interiors of recent years. Pure white cabinets with glossy worktops are losing popularity whereas the layered looks of the past are making a comeback. Mixing materials, colours and textures creates a cosy, warm and inviting interior with visuals that excite the eyes and mind. They’re lower maintenance spaces than shiny modernism as imperfections and untidiness is easily disguised. They also give you the opportunity to think innovatively about the materials you’re using including choosing materials with the lowest environmental impact, looking locally and upcycling. It also gives you the opportunity to include all sorts of looks that you love, you don’t have to stick to one style. But striking a harmonious balance mixing so many elements can be challenging. Start with the worktops. Mixing worktop materials creates practical kitchen zones. For example chose a durable, heat and stain resistant natural stone like granite or slate where you cut and cook, and something softer and more tactile where you eat and entertain. If you have an island unit make it a focal point by choosing a different material to the main worktop. Or include a wooden butcher’s block to break up a long marble surface. And did you know natural stones come in multiple textures, from your classic smooth and shiny to rustic flame brushed. Rather than shiny cabinets, try matte colours mixed with some exposed wood. And there are many choices of flooring that will add warmth and beauty to your mixed materials kitchen. If you’ve chosen a natural stone worktop, try terracotta tiles. Or if you’ve gone for a wooden top, try a slate floor. Choose open shelves to expose the varying textiles of your appliances and kitchen ware. Creating a kitchen with mixed materials in mind gives you the opportunity to design a space that works for you practically but also the opportunity to think creatively and innovatively.

BBQ with... BBQ Tandoori Chicken Serves 4
Mama Dor’s Kitchen isn’t just about traditional curry making. There’s also a range of rubs available, especially good for the BBQ season! Take Mama Dor’s Tandoori Rub, for example. As well as being incredibly delicious, there’s no artificial colours or preservatives and use on the BBQ couldn’t be any easier. Follow the below recipe for the most delicious & moist barbecued chicken legs. empty, bring it back for a refill, at a lower price.
Ingredients: • • • •
4 chicken legs 2 tablespoons Mama Dor’s Tandoori Rub Spice Blend 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 4 heaped tablespoons natural greek yoghurt
Method: 1. Mix the oil, spice blend and yoghurt to make a thick paste. Add the chicken legs and mix well, ensuring that the chicken is well coated. Cover, refrigerate and leave to marinate for at least an hour, but ideally overnight. 2. Cook on the barbecue, scooping up the paste onto the chicken as you cook. Serve with a delicious crisp salad for a healthy summer meal. If our wonderful British weather rains on your BBQ plans, you can cook in the oven or even on a griddle pan, on a slow heat ensuring the chicken is cooked through. * Note: If you don’t have Mama Dor’s spice blend, you can substitute for a generic curry powder. You won’t get that unique tandoori flavour, but the method will give you a tasty barbecued chicken.
Mama Dor’s Kitchen provides a range of authentic Indian Spice Blends. All blends are sugar & gluten free and are suitable on a vegan diet. They are provided in a refillable glass spice jar and come with an easy to follow recipe card. There are over 15 blends to choose from, all created with family and ease of use in mind. So they are all mild and flavourful, and typically can be made using ingredients you already have in your store cupboard. The jars range from £5 to £10 each, with each jar containing enough Spice Blend for 12 servings. And when your jar is empty, bring it back for a refill, at a lower price.
If you’d like to spice up your BBQ with the Tandoori Rub, or any of the other delicious blends, visit www.mamadorskitchen.co.uk, and use offer code LOOKSPICES for a 15% discount off your first order.
Offer ends 30th Sept. 2019, and cannot be used in conjunction with any other discount.

In celebration of the recently launched MIDSOMER TOUR FACEBOOK PAGE we have A PAIR OF TICKETS to giveaway to THREE lucky readers. T
he Midsomer Walking Tours of Thame, inspired by the popularity of the long-running ITV series Midsomer Murders, have become a well-established part of the local scene since they began three years ago. Thame, one of the most frequently used filming locations, regularly features as Causton or as one of the many villages in ‘Midsomer County’. Many landmarks have been featured, including the Town Hall, Market House, Rumsey’s Chocolaterie, the Swan, Black Horse, and Spread Eagle hotels. Feedback from people taking the tours has been 100% positive but, until now, it’s not been possible for anyone to comment about them on social media. This has now changed with the recent launch of a brand new Midsomer Tours Facebook page:
- www.facebook.com/thamemidsomertours. Thame Midsomer Tours would love to hear from people whether they’ve been on the tour previously or are planning to go on one. Tony Long, tours coordinator, said, ‘If everyone can ‘LIKE’ the new Facebook page, write a review, perhaps including a photo taken during a tour, and spread the news about the page to friends and family, that will help us get well and truly on the social map. It will also help us assess the growing popularity of the tours and take note of any suggestions for how we can improve the visitor experience’. The new Facebook page was created by Sarah Fletcher of Mushroom Souffle, a local social media consultancy, and funded through the South Oxfordshire District Council’s Councillor Grant Scheme. In two years, Thame ‘s Midsomer walking tours have attracted 600 participants from the UK and other countries as far apart as Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands. This year, it’s hoped over 500 people will take part. Tony Long, tours coordinator, added, ‘We feel this shows how popular the tours have become. The new Facebook page can only increase their popularity’. The tours take place every Wednesday at 11.00 am until 30th October. They start from inside Thame Museum (79 High Street, Thame, OX9 3AE), a filming location. If the advertised tour times don’t fit in with your itinerary, tours can be arranged for groups of 4 or more people on other days. To be in with a chance to WIN TICKETS simply email the answer to this question along with your contact details to competitions@look-localmagazine.co.uk;
Q: HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE THE THAME TOURS ATTRACTED IN THE LAST 2 YEARS? Three winners will be selected at random from all correct entries and notified after the closing date of 31.08.19.

Starting Out with CBD
By Jemma Stevens of Flawsome Jem
A couple of issues back I shared with you, what CBD is and how it could potentially help you. Today I wanted to talk a little bit about starting out with CBD and what products are available.
CBD is one of over 100 compounds found in the cannabis plant and belongs to a class of ingredients called Cannabinoids. CBD is the major non psychoactive component of Cannabis, meaning you won’t get high from taking it. The human body has a system called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) that receives and translates signals it receives from cannabinoids in the body. The body produces some Cannabinoids on its own, which are called Endocannabinoids. The ECS helps regulate functions such as sleep, immune system responses and pain. CBD influences receptors in the body which are concerned with movement, coordination, sensory perception, emotion, memory, cognition, autonomic and endocrine functions and is also seen to reduce inflammation. One of the first things to understand about how long the effects of CBD last is that CBD affects everyone differently. How long it takes to feel the effects and how long these effects are experienced depend a lot on the person who’s taking it so if you’re new to CBD, you’ll want to give your body some time to adjust to taking it. Many people just starting out on their CBD journey try it for the first time and think they’re going to immediately see extraordinary results, but this isn’t always how CBD works. Some people do see extraordinary results the first time (and we love hearing those stories) but for most, it’s best to give your CBD regime some time before determining how long various methods of administration work for you. It is recommended to start on a low dosage and build your way up so you can find your personal optimum intake! To understand the varying strengths further; 5% is great for mild pain, anxiety, trouble sleeping and general health and wellbeing. 10% is more suited to those with recurring pain, arthritis and or injury. 15%, the most popular amongst those with fibromyalgia, PTSD and severe inflammation. Tinctures are one of the most popular methods of delivery. CBD tinctures are taken most effectively sublingually (under the tongue), where the CBD oil is held for approximately 60 seconds then swallowed. When it’s held under the tongue, the CBD oil is absorbed by the mucous membranes and then directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive tract, which allows for a quicker delivery. It typically takes 20-30 minutes to feel the effects of a CBD tincture, and the effects are known to last between 4-6 hours. There are many different ways to take CBD and the method of delivery you choose will ultimately determine how long the effects of CBD last. As a general rule you can expect the effects to last somewhere between 2-8 hours. CBD products available:

TREATING LONG-STANDING DISORDERS AND TRAUMAS WITH ACUPUNCTURE AND AURICULOTHERAPY ... This is a shortened version of a longer article written by Thame Therapy Clinic’s, Andy Roscoe, on the treatment of Chronic Disorders with Acupuncture and Auriculotherapy. The full version can be found on the clinic website, www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk and his personal website, www.andyroscoeacupuncture. co.uk. For an introduction into how Auriculotherapy could help you, read on...
I increasingly see people
with chronic disorders and syndromes which go beyond the more common complaints and everyday problems. These disorders are Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and so forth. The causes are always complex and can involve a mix of genetic predisposition, mental health breakdown, physical weakness, and often a spiritual crisis or ‘loss of mojo’ as it is often put. People with this complexity of problems will have a lot of lifestyle restrictions, low energy, and usually some combination of emotional dysfunction marked by anxiety, depression, anger, and numbness. I have treated people with acupuncture for these problems for many years with varying degrees of success, trying to restore some semblance of normality and control in chronically depleted lives.
I have recently begun to train in newer techniques in acupuncture known as Auriculotherapy, using the special connections that the ears have with the mind and body and in particular the inner workings of the brain. Auriculotherapy has been used for some time to help soldiers with battlefield traumas. It can also help people who have been in ‘non-military wars’, people who have had shocks or traumas which have overloaded the body and mind and cannot be released even years after the event. These people are low functioning in many areas of their lives and invariably have chronic fatigue and pains and emotional shutdown, and often distressing flashbacks. Other versions of this shutdown can also be seen in adults and children whose genetic predisposition has created mental and physical overloads, often seen in people with dyslexia, ADHD, and Autism. There is no one solution to any of the above and invariably most of the people I see for acupuncture will also have counselling and some medical drug input. I am happy to discuss informally whether acupuncture/ auriculotherapy can help you.

Welcome... Do you remember the scene in ‘About Time’ when Tim (the hero) is asked to go back and relive every day again, this time paying attention? This is essentially a lesson in mindfulness. Mindfulness is about the present moment. It is anything you do to truly connect with the here & now. Present moment living eliminates worry about the future and regret about the past; it sharpens experiences and emotions, enables full concentration and allows connection with others; it facilitates empathy and forgiveness; it heightens pleasurable physical sensations, and by the same token, reduces pain by taking away self-talk or anxiety about pain. All of this matters because even without health issues, we all have periods of wanting a calmer, quieter life and tend to get swept up in too much information, too much multi-tasking, being constantly distracted or overloaded, and striving to be somewhere else other than where we are now. Mindfulness meditation combines focus through breath with awareness of thoughts and sensations to lead us gently back into the present. At Linden Tree Meditation, you will learn a number of helpful mindfulness techniques, while exploring the twin flames of focus and awareness and the relationship between them. Breath is the foundation and makes up the first part of every session. We look in detail at breathing exercises and breath focus methods. We also explore other aids to focus such as candle flames, mantras, images or sounds.

We then examine awareness: the importance of curiosity and non-judgement about where our sensations, thoughts and emotions are coming from, and the identifying of patterns and habitual thinking in order to quieten the mind. In some meditations we encourage our awareness to be unrestrained, open and free, in order to develop creative thinking. These approaches are covered in a number of classes being planned for September: a 5-week Beginners’ Meditation Course in Thame, Meditation in the Garden at Oxford Botanic Garden, a 7-week Chakra Meditation Course, and a Menopause Meditation Circle.
