BOOKING DEADLINE for September 2020 issue:

Friday 7th August

Well - what a strange and surreal year this has been so far and certainly not one that any of us could have predicted when we entered a next decade full of plans and aspirations for 2020. Never did I think that I’d have to do my weekly food shop wearing a facemask like something out of an apocalypse movie, but here we are! Oh and on the subject of facemasks, if anyone is looking for someone locally who is making them, check out Krafty Kin on Facebook, they have a lovely selection of both adults and children’s masks (I’m sporting mine in the image below). It’s certainly been a year that will go down in history for many reasons - but not all negative - because whilst this pandemic has been an emotional, anxious and downright frightening time one thing that really struck a cord in me is the sense of community and compassion that it has brought out in all of us and for that we should feel proud. In true British style, we have pulled together and supported one another beyond measure and our NHS and Keyworkers are worth their weight in gold with all they have done, and continue to do for us. As I write this letter, although I fear this virus is far from over, I do feel a lot more positive about the last quarter of 2020. We all seem to be adapting well to the new ‘normal’ and I’ve been sharing so many uplifting posts on my social media recently about businesses reopening and successfully running with the social distancing rules in place. So here’s to all the incredible local businesses, whether they’ve worked throughout the pandemic providing essential products and services or those who have recently reopened and are working hard to recover from the lost months - lets all support one another. You’ll find a wonderful array of businesses here in the magazine as well as some great new features to enjoy. Until next month, stay safe and support local...

NEW BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP

Helping Local Businesses bounce back from Lockdown As the old saying goes, “two heads are better than one’, so when award winning, Digital Marketing Agency, Harris Consultancy approached Look Local Magazine with an idea of working alongside one another, the publication owner was keen to meet. The vision was to pool both organisations expertise together to help educate local businesses in the importance of linking both traditional offline methods of marketing communication with the ever-evolving world of digital marketing and social media. Over a couple of Coconut Lattes and a slice of cake, it soon became very clear that there were significant synergies between Look Local Magazine and Harris Consultancy and that their company ethos and objectives complemented one another well. As such, a new partnership has been formed and both Emma Penfold (Look Local) and Chris Harris (Harris Consultancy) are excited to be combining their wealth of experience and knowledge in Marketing, PR, Graphic Design, Branding, Social Media Management, Sales and Website Design to deliver a personal and fully compressive marketing package to both existing and new clients. By working with a Full-Service Marketing Agency who specialise in supporting the growth of small to medium businesses, start-up’s and sole traders, you can feel assured that every aspect of your business branding is consistent which in turn illustrates confidence to make you stand out from the crowd. Emma & Chris believe that the key to every successful business, coupled with building strong relationships, is branding. To market your business effectively you need to create a strong brand, which is instantly recognisable. Designing a logo is a good starting point as this can determine the path the rest of your branding follows. Your potential customers will encounter your marketing collateral long before you have the opportunity to dazzle them with your charm. Whether this initial contact has been made via your website, a business card, magazine advert or any other form of marketing communication, it is vital that the correct image is portrayed. If you are keen to come across as a professional and reputable business that the public would want to trust with their custom, it makes sense that your marketing material reflects this. Your website is another vital cog in the marketing wheel. It’s your online shop front, yet statistics show we have less than 15 seconds to capture a potential customer before they navigate to the next site! As times change, consumers are shopping and researching online, often navigating through different sites and sources, reading countless reviews before making a purchasing decision. It is therefore paramount to develop a secure, clean, responsive and optimised website that is eye-catching, easy to navigate and conversion friendly, ensuring that you convert at every opportunity.

The Sacred Duty of Photograpy by Peter Hasert

I

had been intuiting about this thing called photography for some time. Somewhere in the deep recesses of my being it seemed there was a whisper trying to tell me something. I knew there was something significant about photography that I had not grasped yet, at least not consciously. That is, until it finally hit home. One early morning, photo-gear stored in rucksack, I made my way on foot past hundreds of cars frantically navigating the traffic, pre-COVID of course. I noticed that all their occupants seemed frantically trying to get somewhere, and I wondered for what purpose? Yes, we could say they were going somewhere to build, or repair something or maybe to offer valuable advice or some other essential service. But were they happy I wondered? And why do we do what we do? While living in Germany for seventeen years, I also tried to get somewhere, usually at 05:20 driving one hundred miles an hour, quite literally, to get to Frankfurt. And yet it never really felt as if I ever arrived where I wanted to be. Of course I arrived at the office to do the checks on the servers and systems, but was I really where I wanted to be? Was this my destination? One thing was clear, I wasn’t a happy camper. I watched the traffic stop, start, stop, start, stop,

start, and wondered if the drivers were happy about where they were going , and how they were getting there, their lives I mean. Perhaps they felt the same about their lives? Stop, start, stop, start, stop, start, mixed with frustration. As I looked at the birds, bees and flowers, my attention fell on the breeze, nature’s eclectic mix of colours, and the morning rays of sunshine that warmed my face, and it all looked and felt so wonderfully glorious. And somehow I felt much closer to where I wanted to be. In that moment the still small whisper seemed much clearer. The noise of the traffic and the distress of the road users seemed to amplify it. The role of a photographer, could ideally serve as a sublime counter balance to the frenzy of so-called modern life, I thought. Photography, as an art, serves to balance the chaos we loose ourselves in. It helps us remember the beauty that is still to be found out there away from the maddening machinery we call the economy. And perhaps a specific photo could aid as a signpost

August 2020 pointing us in the right direction, to where we really are meant to be. A place more authentic and more humane. Many people don’t feel alive, at least not as they would hope to. As a photographer, I hope that I could take the photo that may provide that micro respite from the daily grind for someone somewhere. To inspire them to be a better version of themselves and remember that they are here, not just to feed the machinery but to live a meaningful life. I witness the marvellous, the miraculous, and yes the sacred spectacle of life as it unfolds around me in all its magnificent glory, and I try to capture it as best I can, for others. I have this duty and privilege to glean fragments of beauty and glory from the world around us, and share it with others who couldn’t be there to witness the miracle. That I believe is the sacred duty of the photographer.

STRENGTHENING

Heallth & Wellbeing

the Immune System

Andy Rcoe, Director and Acupuncturist at Thame Therapy Clinic, discusses what constitutes our immune system and how we might strengthen it… Strengthening the immune system is a phrase that you have probably heard quite a lot in the last few months in connection with staying well in the face of the threat of Covid 19. But what exactly is the ‘immune system?’ It is a term that has sometimes been used loosely in the media to suggest it is an actual part of the body or an organ. Sometimes we are told that certain foods or treatments strengthen it, and sometimes we are told, confusingly, that it is actually the immune system going into over-drive that can cause Covid 19 to become fatal. In Acupuncture thinking the ‘immune system’ is actually a very broad term which describes the resilience of the body and mind to stress and infection. It implies that the health of both the mind and body is important in our ability to deal with the rigours of life. So how do we maintain a healthy immune system? Many factors affect the functioning of our body and mind. On a simple level the quality of our diet and sleep will be important, as will the amount of exercise we do. Keeping a balance between work, rest and play comes into this equation. On another level, the quality of our work and home environments and the quality of our relationships with key people in these places will have a significant effect on our health. Getting stuck in a stressful home or work situation can certainly undermine health. On the more specific level of our bodily functions it is also true that the constitutional strength we inherited from our parents will play a part in the overall wellness of our immune system. Constitutional weaknesses need to be understood and addressed with appropriate treatments or lifestyle changes in order that they don’t dominate our health inordinately. The Acupuncture view of the body is only one way of understanding how we are joined up inside. But it is a sophisticated holistic therapy that can allow us to reconnect our minds with our bodies and make good decisions when things feel like they might fall apart. In this respect it is a pro-active way of keeping well and not allowing our ‘immune system’ to become run down, the pre-cursor of so many illnesses in society today. In simple energetics, a clearer stronger energy in our minds and bodies gives us a better chance of having a resilient immune system, and more chance of getting through tough times which otherwise might floor us.

NATURAL SOLUTIONS

for Optimal Health Immunity

By Peter Dewdney, Nutritional Therapist, Associate Naturopath (mBANT, mANP, mGNC)

We all have a wonderful opportunity to improve our health during the summer in readiness of the Autumn and Winter months when sessional illness usually occurs. This year is a better reason than any others to really do something to improve upon your general health which in turn improves your immunity. Whether you suffer from poor digestive health, arthritic or musculoskeletal symptoms, low mood or seasonal illness, carry a little additional weight or simply a bit unfit, your immunity can be compromised. The first place to start is with your daily diet and a look at what’s being eaten. Can the diet be improved on by adding something fresh or raw, could additional vegetables be added or possibly fresh fruit. A good balance of the right foods is important in each meal, ideally containing carbohydrates, protein and good fats. Most of us drink very little water and are dehydrated and therefore unable to efficiently remove unwanted toxins from our body. Water helps to balance the acidity of the gastrointestinal tract and its processes as well as many other very important roles. Secondly look at your obvious dietary shortfall created by likes, dislikes, dietary exclusions and lifestyle choices. This is when natural supplementation plays a key role in filling in those nutritional shortfalls with the use for example of a multivitamin or specific nutrient such as Vitamin B12. If you eat very little fresh fruit and vegetables then you are likely very short in B Vitamins, Vitamin C and many others. If you eat a vegetarian diet then amino acids are likely deficient as would be Vitamin B12, Iron and others. In practice I spend some time exploring our ability to process foods, the times when meals are eaten, how long is the digestive tract given to process foods before going to bed, I even explore eliminated waste which offers the observer an enormous amount of useful information. A strong robust digestive tract is more often than not a reflection of a good, strong and well-functioning immune system capable of great things. In clinic I commonly use natural supplementation alongside diet to assist with a condition or symptoms, ensuring all dietary and supplementary changes work together with existing medications. If you have been tolerating a persistent or troublesome symptom which requires greater investigation then please contact me to discuss in a little more detail. Take this period of time to improve on your health feeling confident in your ability to be healthy throughout this year and next. To arrange a consultation or for further information please fill in the Contact Form on my website: www.peterdewdney.co.uk

Planet success for local Health and Organic retailer, as they enter their third decade in Thame... The last 4 months have been challenging to say

the least for many businesses but as an essential store, Planet Health and Organics in Swan Walk, Thame, have remained open throughout the pandemic providing and updating their level of care and service to everyone in the local area. In addition to being open 6 days a week, the shop is now offering a range of services to suit everyone whatever their circumstances. A home delivery service free of charge is available to all customers, with priority given to key workers and those in greater need. What’s more, the team can prepare customers shopping and orders in advance, to minimise the time spent shopping. Owner of the shop, Peter Dewdney, says “We have been and continue to ensure our store is as hygienically safe as is possible with hand sanitizers around and outside the shop. Even to the side of our new refilling station we have provided a sanitizer unit. We are limiting the numbers of shoppers in the store however to date we have experienced little difficulty and everyone asked have felt safe, secure and happy to be shopping again.” As Planet Health & Organics approach their third decade in the town, they have reorganised the shop creating not only additional space but a new and organised layout. The ground floor now displays an extensive range of natural supplementation, herbs, nutrients and specialist products together with all health and beauty. The first floor has organic and specialist foods, chilled foods and an eco-friendly refill station. They have also expanded the range of pre-packed nuts, grains, rice’s, flakes, pulses and seeds.

Peter continues, “We look forward to welcoming back all our customers when the time is right. A very specific thank must be given to all our customers who have supported us throughout this period of lock down. Your loyalty and support have been greatly appreciated”.

New social-distance friendly walks launched in the Chilterns The

Chilterns Conservation Board and Chiltern Society have developed a series of 23 walks across the Chilterns which are social-distance friendly, avoiding crowded ‘honey-pot’ locations and narrow paths where possible. Between 2 and 6 miles long, the walks start in market towns or villages, with good public transport links or parking facilities, and are being launched to coincide with the re-opening of many pubs and cafes. The Chilterns has some outstanding food and drink producers and these walks highlight the many farm shops nearby that are open for business and selling Chilterns local specialities to enjoy on

News & Events a picnic, or to take home- everything from local honey, beer, cheeses, charcuterie, grass fed lamb and much more. The walks were developed by 18 volunteers, all experienced walk leaders who are passionate about the Chilterns and keen to share some of their favourite walks away from the crowds. All the routes take in the beautiful rolling landscapes of the Chilterns, picturesque villages, and plenty of historic interest too, from old drovers routes to iron age hillforts. Discover places with wonderful names like Nanfan Wood, Lilley Hoe and Cobblershill. And some walks start on commons or at recreation grounds with lots of open space, so ideal for families or friends to combine with a picnic and for kids to run around safely. Annette Venters of the Chilterns Conservation Board said “During Lockdown the Chilterns countryside has been used and enjoyed as never before, bringing comfort and joy to many. The wellused honey-pot sites can get very crowded, making social distancing difficult and putting pressure on the landscape. Luckily, the Chilterns has over 2,000km of footpaths, so there are plenty of quiet places to enjoy. We hope these walks will encourage people to explore the Chilterns and discover new places”. Many of the walks are stile-free and most are under 4 miles long, making them accessible to many. Whilst we want more people to enjoy the benefits of walking in the Chilterns, we ask them to do this safely and responsibly by, for example, taking litter home, not lighting fires and BBQs, and keeping dogs under control. Visit www.chilternsaonb.org for further guidance.

COVID-19 APPEAL BY THE ROTARY CLUB OF PRINCES RISBOROUGH During the current crisis the Rotary Club of Princes Risborough continues to help those in need in the local area and we have recently donated in excess of £9,000 to local charitable organisations and schools needing help dealing with the crisis. However, as with many things our fundraising activities have been severely curtailed and now our reserves are nearly exhausted. There are still many Covid-19 related initiatives which have been set up by volunteers to meet local needs, and which urgently require financial support. We are therefore asking individuals and organisations if they could donate to a Fund to enable us to continue supporting your Community.

o you miss live music?

Unfortunately at the current time there can be no live music events taking place within venues. However it doesn’t mean you have to miss out entirely. ‘Open Micsolate’ Back at the beginning of Lockdown with us all being forced to socially distance ourselves from each other, a group of open mic fanatics wondered if any friends or friends several times removed might like to post a video of them having a bash at a song/ performance open mic style! Any style, any standard! They set up a Facbook Group called ‘Open Micsolate’ for such performers and since March it has grown to almost 6500 members with people from around the world sharing their musical talents. It has also given a chance for people to collaborate online and create some truly stunning music together! So if you’d like to get involved, join the group, be brave and get posting! Feel free to invite anyone you think may enjoy or contribute. Kind comments only, if you hear anything you don’t like, skip on! All copyrights belong to original artists. The first Thursday Music Club – is providing fantastic online live sets from some of the countries best musicians, whether local or from further afield! Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford

A

s a plant addict and garden designer I find my life lived out not in coffee spoons but soil and propagules! It is a lifelong service to the earth and I have the urge to create gardens everywhere the opportunity allows! As a result of my professional practice, and addiction, healthy though it is, I have learnt quite a bit and there are seasonal top tips I would love to share with you here in: ‘Look locally over the garden gate’ which will be a regular feature for a garden ponder in our lovely Look Local Magazine. This month: August, summers crescendo, holiday season, if you can’corona? If not the garden is ooooh so good for bbq’s and alfresco dining, paddling pools and sunbathing!! Time in the garden is warm, sometimes very wet and always burgeoning with potential for a floral feast to feed the soul. If you need a boost in your garden for late summer I have some firm favourites. Many of us have a good show until the summer solstice, we are all familiar with Cottage garden favourites: Loupins, Delphiniums, Peonies, and I know you can name many more. But often we are looking a bit sparse apart from Roses and Fuchsias, full-time performers nonetheless. But truly now is the time for a real herbaceous show. Imports from around the world extend our season, summer bedding an obvious example but what about a fresh look with North American Prairie Perennials; planting made fashionable in garden circles in the 70’s with Piet Ordolf designs. In this design style they are teamed with grasses but for pure perennials try: Rudbeckia Fulgida Sullivantii ‘Goldstrum’, Phlox Paniculata, Coreopsis Palustris ‘Summer Sunshine’, Echinacea Purpurea ‘White Swan’, Liatris Spicata ‘Kobold’, Monarda Didyma ‘Pink Lace’, Eupatorium Dubium ‘Baby Joe’, Veronicastrum Virginicum. The great thing is the plant centre and nurseries are well up on seasonal offerings. But the late summer perennials are often passed over as we don’t think of planting now with holidays, but perennials will be waiting & flowering for you, primed for a bit of bare earth in your borders. For more ideas and gardening know-how check out my Blog on my website, www.mimosagardendesign.com or follow me on Instagram and Facebook.

GET THE LOOK Constantly cleaning your kitchen?

Coulon Stone offer advise on the mt hygenic stone surfaces to help make the job easier...

With most of us are spending more time at home than ever before, we’re finding ourselves constantly

cleaning. This may have left you looking around your house wishing certain parts were easier to keep clean. This might include the kitchen worktop. We’re preparing more food at home, the washing up never ends and we’re wiping the worktops every few hours – so it would be nice to have a surface with built in hygiene qualities that takes just seconds to clean. Well, below are some natural and man-made stone surfaces that are just that!

Granite – When picking a natural material to use as your kitchen worktop, granite is by far the most superior choice, particularly in regards to hygiene and maintenance. Made from molten rock compressed over millions of years its non-porous properties act as a shield against germs which can be easily and quickly wiped away with disinfectant. Granite is particularly effective against bacteria if re-sealed every few years. Whereas wood, another popular natural surface material, which expands and contracts due to changes in temperature and humidity is porous, therefore making it difficult to get rid of all the bacteria trapped on its surface. Lapitec – This is the hardest surface material on the market. It’s a man-made stone created by firing minerals at over 1200C, giving it a similar chemistry to granite but with increased durability. It’s completely non-porous therefore resistant to staining, mould and bacteria. It’s also resistant to acids so the surface can’t be worn away by acidic foods and chemicals, including cleaning products like bleach. Composite Quartz – These surfaces are made up of 90% natural quartz making them extremely hard. Similarly to granite their almost completely non-porous making them a great choice for busy kitchens as germs can be easily wiped away. Composite quartz surfaces are popular because of the huge variety in design choice. For more information about these stone surface email info@coulonstone.com, or visit our showroom in Stokenchurch - Social Distancing measures are in place.

Business Support

GETTING BACK TO BUSINESS By Chris Harris, Harris Consultancy

We do hope you and your family are safe and well, this has been a tremendously stressful time for us all. Over the last few months, we’ve been doing all we can to support our local communities, including marketing to create a local neighbourhood friend scheme to support the most vulnerable, children’s colouring competition to keep the little ones entertained and allowing researchers to use our idle office computers to help analyse and aid research for a vaccine for COVID19! And the sense of community has been overwhelming, whilst we all find ways in which to help each other and support one another through these tough times while adapting to the new “norm”. Adapting your business requires flexibility and an open mind, particularly if your business offers a service that would be challenging to achieve with the new social distancing rules, but everything is achievable and all challenges can be overcome. We have seen a huge upward trend towards digitalisation, businesses are adapting their strategies and moving otherwise physical services online, perhaps they have introduced a subscriptionbased business model to help them with re-occurring revenues or started selling a product with a slight change on their core strategy. The point is, the consumer trend is changing and therefore businesses are coming up with new angles and initiatives to keep consumer interest and sales heading upwards. And take this opportunity to re-evaluate your goals and business objectives, creating and breaking down your purposes into smaller achievable targets so that you feel proud and energised when you reach them rather than overwhelmed at the thought of getting there. Here at Harris Consultancy our core objective has always been to offer help and support, obtainable through our free business advice programme. We will help you with any ideas you have and develop them digitally to use throughout your business. We are not just award-winning social media and web developers, we’re in the heart of the community helping and supporting local businesses. Our social media and website packages offer excellent value for money in addition to our free longer term commitment to helping you grow your business – We don’t just want to build you a website and walk away, and we don’t want to silently manage your social media in the background, we’re committed to helping you with any business queries you may have, any thoughts on your strategy, after all two heads are better than one and small businesses don’t always have that opportunity to bounce ideas around. Harris Consultancy is committed now more than ever to continue to develop bright ideas for local business and will do all we can to help you succeed. Our website packages start from £39 per month and social media management from £69 per month. We can also come up with a bespoke solution for you if our packages don’t quite fit your needs! If you would like to reach out to us to discuss any of the above, or perhaps to look at your strategy in further detail, then please contact us: M: 07799 282042 | E: hello@harris-consultancy.co.uk W: www.harris-consultancy.co.uk
