Collagen – why is it so important for a healthy lifestyle... By Shelagh Foster
I have suffered back and neck pain since my 30’s. It started with an impact to my spine from a car
accident, which weakened my body. Little did I know then, that my IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) was also depleting collagen out of my bones and joints. I did not understand then, how is collagen absorbed in the body so I was started to see and feel the effects that the lack of collagen can have on on the body. As we get older our bones become brittle, joints become weaker and the skin becomes saggier, this is all due to collagen depletion. This is where a collaggen supplement of some description may help.
What is Collagen •
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body. It’s found in our skin, bones, connective tissues, muscles, tendons, gut, blood vessels and even our teeth. It’s the body’s building block.

As collagen is a protein, its building blocks are amino acids. Amino acids are produced when the protein we eat, such as meat, fish and dairy products, are broken down. These amino acids are then rebuilt into other proteins such as wound healing, muscle repair or collagen. However, collagen production decreases with age, which causes weaker connections. This is why skin becomes wrinkly and joints become less stable.

THE APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTORS You may choose to appoint a member of your family, a prime beneficiary or close friend to act as an executor. Remember, an executor can also be a beneficiary. If you do need to appoint a professional executor, you could opt for either a solicitor, chartered accountant or a Trust Corporation to act on your behalf.
APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIANS If you have children (under the age of 18) you will need to appoint guardians. It may be helpful to make at least one guardian a joint executor as they have a right to money from your estate to help towards the upbringing of your child. This amount can be restricted to a certain amount or could be left in a trust fund. If you have a child with additional needs, who are likely to require specialist care either at home or in the care of the Local Authority, a trust will be required to ensure adequate funds are available for their future.
PROPERTY How you hold your property will determine how it passes on after your death. As ‘joint tenants’ your share will pass on to the survivor automatically. If you wish to pass your ‘interest’ in the property to your children or others, you should hold your property as ‘tenants in common’. More in-depth information can be discussed with your consultant.

From fundraisers to friendly neighbours, there are plenty to choose from but who do you think deserves to be awarded Volunteer of the Year? Volunteer Group of the Year A volunteer group that has worked tirelessly for the good of our community. This could be a charity, but we also welcome nominations for less formal volunteer groups, who might have formed in response to the pandemic, or any volunteer group that makes a positive difference to their community. To date, the Town Awards panel has awarded 66 Town Awards to local people. Chair of the Town Awards Panel, Alex Bond, explains more about the awards: “It has been a difficult year so it’s great to be able to recognise those living, working and volunteering in Thame. The awards are well-established and supported by the Town Council as well as local sponsors. If you know someone or a volunteer group who has gone that extra mile to make a difference to others, I would urge you to nominate them for an award.” Anyone can make a nomination. Chin-dig - A fun day out for under 8s! IT’S BACK! The Creation Station have teamed up with Cha-Char Chimps to organise a big party for children at White Fields Recreation Ground in Chinnor on Thursday 26th August between 10am - 3pm. Bring along a picnic and enjoy a super fun-packed day out! The event will take place in both the large marquee and the surrounding field. The theme is simply “A Summer Party”, so visitors are urged to come along in funky shorts, hats and sunnies or even a flower lei. Inside the marquee there will be lots of activities to enjoy! Your ticket includes lots of craft activities, plus there is a schedule of parachute games, story telling and of course ChaChar Chimps will be leading the way with lots of fun props and games and there will be a bouncy castle on the field. There is limited spaces available for the marquee sessions, so stage shows will be repeated throughout the day to ensure everyone can fully enjoy the experience. Please note there will be an additional charge for facepainting and refreshments (facepainting may also have minimum age restrictions). Booking in advance is advised as we will need to limit numbers to ensure a sensible capacity. Tickets for remaining space will be available on the door on a first come first served basis. Summer of Fun in the Chilterns Join us from 1st - 8th August for a

Chilterns Celebration is a week long celebration organised by Chalk, Cherries and Chairs, an exciting National Lottery Funded project, spearheaded by the Chilterns Conservation Board. Chalk, Cherries & Chairs is an ambitious five-year scheme which aims to connect local people to the wildlife and cultural heritage of the Central Chilterns. The scheme operates under three themes - wildlife, heritage and people - but the projects which fall under these three themes are all designed with the Chilterns landscape in mind. No less than eighteen interweaving projects share common threads, including volunteering, learning and digital media. Here is an overview of what you can expect during the week of 1st - 8th August:
August 1st: Winchmore Hill walking tour...
Come and join local historian Jane Barker who will tell you about the fascinating history of Winchmore Hill and the industries that supported the villagers for hundreds of years - lace making, pottery-ware and chairmaking. The 1 hour 30-minute walk begins and ends on the Common in Winchmore Hill.
August 3rd: Bodger’s Pub Tour...
Join us for a pub tour to remember, as we explore the fascinating connections between Chilterns pubs and chair-making! Expert guide Stuart King will share stories of the pubs where chair bodgers (turners who made chair parts in the woods) came for their pint (sometimes before breakfast!) and where some pub landlords set up thriving chair-making workshops. Travelling by mini-bus from High Wycombe, we will explore pubs and their stories in Terriers Green, Penn Street, Winchmore Hill, Holmer Green, Great Hampden, the Lacey Green area and more, stopping for a delicious lunch along the way at the Hampden Arms. Timings: 10.45am – 3:00pm (return time is approximate)

August 6th: Routes to the Past Guided Walk Join Sam Johansen for a walking tour of the Historic Routeways of Crowell Parish, taking in ancient trackways, sunken lanes and drovers roads, and considering the different uses the landscape of the Chilterns has been put to through history. The walk will take roughly three and a half hours on easy to moderate terrain. Families and dogs welcome. Timing: 12 noon, 3.5 hours duration Start location: St Mary’s Church car park, Crowell (the gate is right on the western edge of Crowell)
August 6th: Exciting new Family Fun Festival on Wycombe Rye This exciting free-to-attend event is taking place in the Pann Mill corner of Wycombe Rye from 11:00am – 4:00pm on Saturday 8th August with an array of entertainment and activities for everyone to enjoy. There will be falcon displays, ferret racing, children’s craft activities, face painting, pole lathe demonstrating, lacemaking, ice cream stalls and more on offer, all to celebrate the heritage and landscape of the Chilterns. Chilterns based businesses Chiltern Rangers, BBOWT, Buckinghamshire Council and Amersham and Wycombe Museum will also be attendance with more fun activities for the whole family to try. Thame has a variety of fantastic opportunities for budding musicians who wish to join together with other like-minded people. From bands to choirs to bell ringing! We also host a huge variety of annual musical events. Thame Music Academy TMA is excited to let you know that they are running a large array of fantastic Summer workshops and courses this August!
All of the sessions will be run by their professional tutors and they will of course adhere to any government restrictions there may be at the time. TMA’s courses are always extremely popular and therefore the places are given on a first come/first served basis. Please do get in touch as soon as you can if you wish to make a booking to avoid disappointment. Below is an overview of what is on offer and more detail can be found via the TMA website:
*Music Production and Recording Workshops*
This is a unique opportunity to learn about how instruments and singing are recorded by using a large array

of equipment and software. You will get the chance to try out different instruments, see how best to record each one and work as a group to record an entire song professionally by the end of the session. These sessions run across 2 mornings from 9:30am – 2:00pm.
*Beginner Guitar Courses*
TMA will be running 3 X 1 hour beginner guitar courses during the summer. Within the hour you will be learning about how a guitar works, how to tune a guitar, a selection of basic chords, strumming patterns and how guitar tablature works. Thame Music Academy is pleased to offer their Summer Children’s Music Workshops! The sessions will take place from 9am - 11:45 am with all children aged 5 - 12 welcome to join in! The children will get the chance to learn and sing a variety of seasonal songs, have a go on a large selection of percussion instruments
Entertainment and play some brilliant rhythm games culminating in a performance for parents at the end of the session! We will also be composing our own pieces using graphic scores! Alongside this the children will be making our own musical instruments! A drink and snack will be provided.
TOWERSEY FRINGE FESTIVAL Here is some fantastic news about an upcoming local event….! After careful consideration and weighing up of all the risks, the organisers of the festival have decided that this year’s Towersey Fringe will be going ahead! They are aiming to have as ‘normal’ event as possible, but also keeping everything as safe as possible. The event will be taking place on 28th & 29th August 2021. On the evening of Saturday 28th August they will be hosting their unique ticketed Comedy Event again, however the precise format of this will be devised nearer the time, once they know what is possible. Please be assured, that whatever they do, the safety and wellbeing of the visitors, performers, vendors and volunteers will be paramount. On the afternoon and evening of Sunday 29th August the fringe shall be putting on their usual brilliant day of local bands playing live, the famous Fringe Bar, great food from local vendors, the Fringe Spa, activities for kids and much more. Towersey Fringe shall of course follow all necessary government Covid-19 guidelines which may be applicable at the time, and will keep you up to date going forward. This is great news as we could all do with a fantastic local weekend at the end of the Summer to let our hair down and enjoy this wonderful community we are all lucky enough to live in! OAKFEST 2021! This wonderful local event will be taking place on Saturday 4th September from 1:00pm – 11:30pm. Oakfest is a popular Music and Beer Festival held annually on the playing field of Oakley C of E Primary School. It is a wonderful family day out! This years festival will feature 14 local artists, ranging from solo acoustic acts to bands, all performing a wide range of musical styles from country to rock, pop and folk. While the music goes on there are many other activities throughout the afternoon to keep both children and adults busy including a full bar with a range of local ales and ciders along with wine, spirits and soft drinks, a BBQ and a variety of food vendors, a cinema tent, a range of children’s activities and a bouncy castle! What you need to know about Cantilever Staircases ... Cantilever staircases are made to appear as though the stair treads are floating in the air. Stone versions of these sweeping, often spiralling staircases were first built by stone masons in 17th century France. They quickly came to the UK and the first cantilever staircase in England is said to have been built at Queen’s House in Greenwich in 1629. They gained popularity in the 18th century across England and Europe as a mark of elegance and wealth. Next time you visit a National Trust or similar property, look out for a cantilever staircase. Cantilever staircases are still popular today and we have built many in homes across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Creating these graceful staircases is one of our passion projects at Coulon Stone as it involves a huge amount of skill and craftsmanship. Each staircase is completely bespoke. The treads are cut from blocks of stone using our CNC machine and then hand finished by our stone masons. A traditional cantilever staircase works similarly to an arch, with each tread sat on the others shoulder with the weight moving down. Around 150mm of one end of each tread is bricked in to the wall to maximise support. Some customers opt for a modern version of the traditional cantilever look which involves a steel frame running through the staircase or a concrete frame, both of which are then clad in stone. Whilst not traditionally cantilevered they still look incredibly impressive. Hard natural stones work best. We enjoy working with hard limestones, like those from Egypt which closely resemble marble, or hard Italian marbles. Staircase projects, particularly traditional cantilevered ones take around two months for us to complete. Most home owners we’ve worked with have a structural engineer working on the project and we’re happy to work alongside them. There’s always more – more to do, more to finish, more to start. But with gardening there’s more to gain, the space you have for growing is beautiful when packed and abundant. How do we do this on a budget? The joy of seed. Latent new life in its most protected form is now setting and ripening in annuals and early flowering perennials around & about. In truth there is always seed to harvest. But the power of the dry hot days desiccate the parent flower and finish the seed of those early spring plants.
I love local scrumping for seed from roads & paths around Chinnor, or an obliging friend’s garden. At the moment Aquilegia (columbine), Nigela (love in a mist) are good to go. But the season has been slow so you have an extra chance to catch a glance at a good looking Hollyhock or Poppy & revisit later for a seed that will hopefully come true to type and if not there’s always the joy of the unexpected in the unique progeny of the plants you have grown.
Soon: Calendula (marigolds), Purple Toadflax (Linaria), Holly Hock (Alcea) & annual Opium Poppies (Paparva somnifera) will be dry & ready for collection.
To harvest: take a paper bag or envelope, so as not to trap in any moisture &
rot the seeds. Place over the flower head whilst still attached to the plant, bend it downwards & cut or snap the seed head into the bag. The seeds will be primed for distribution and you could lose them if you pick first. Store in a dry place for early spring sowing next year. Happy foraging.
