Collagen – why is it so important for a healthy lifestyle... By Shelagh Foster

I have suffered back and neck pain since my 30’s. It started with an impact to my spine from a car

accident, which weakened my body. Little did I know then, that my IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) was also depleting collagen out of my bones and joints. I did not understand then, how is collagen absorbed in the body so I was started to see and feel the effects that the lack of collagen can have on on the body. As we get older our bones become brittle, joints become weaker and the skin becomes saggier, this is all due to collagen depletion. This is where a collaggen supplement of some description may help.

What is Collagen •

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body. It’s found in our skin, bones, connective tissues, muscles, tendons, gut, blood vessels and even our teeth. It’s the body’s building block.

As collagen is a protein, its building blocks are amino acids. Amino acids are produced when the protein we eat, such as meat, fish and dairy products, are broken down. These amino acids are then rebuilt into other proteins such as wound healing, muscle repair or collagen. However, collagen production decreases with age, which causes weaker connections. This is why skin becomes wrinkly and joints become less stable.

Collagen protein is what keeps your skins’ elasticity and is responsible for replacing dead skin cells.

Our bodies produce collagen naturally, but it decreases with age: 75% - 80% of our skin is made up of collagen and, from the age of 20, we lose around 1% of this each year. As a result, our skin loses its ‘elasticity’ as we get older, which gives us lines and wrinkles.

How is Collagen absorbed into the body? The body absorbs collagen through the food that you eat. The body combines amino acids from high protein foods with other vitamins like vitamin c, copper, and zinc to produce collagen. Collagen contains the amino acid hydroproline, an amino acid that is unique in youthful skin. Eating collagen type rich foods will help your body naturally produce the collagen protein that it needs. So, ingested collagen doesn’t just go directly to the skin. It is absorbed to various parts of the body. A collagen supplement of collagen protein will benefit the whole body, especially in older people with collagen deficiencies. Collagen benefits the entire body, and that includes the body’s largest organ; the skin.

Foods to help increase Collagen •

Our skin is constantly fighting free radical damage during exposure to high levels of stress, pollution and processed food, and this damage cause’s harm to collagen. Let’s coax our skin into producing the best collagen naturally. This, as with so many things, starts with your diet.

Reduce sugar intake diet and increase your vitamin C intake, which will assist in stimulating the best collagen production.

Blueberries - contain phyto nutrients (natural chemicals in plants) that help collagen fibres link together in a way that helps your body produce collagen.

Dark Leafy Greens – spinach, kale and Swiss chard are all rich in vitamin C and A and encourage the body to produce more collagen protein. (Cancer protection is also another benefit).

Orange vegetables and fruits, like carrots, sweet potato, pumpkin, apricot, mango tangerine are rich in vitamin A,which restores and regenerates damaged collagen protein. Mango, which is rich in Vitamin C, works with these acids to boost your bodies best collagen production.

Eggs are naturally rich in amino acids, which are essential for the formation of collagen.

Editorial Feature Why use skin care products with Collagen in? The aim of collagen for skin creams is to slow down the loss of this ‘youthfulness’ protein and keep wrinkles off your skin for as long as possible, and to help the body make more collagen. With the right face cream, it will help protect the collagen you have. A collagen infused cream helps nourish and moisturise the skin, which makes wrinkles look less prominent. In skincare products, hydrolyzed collagen is basically collagen that has been broken down into smaller chains of amino acids which are called peptides. It is believed that peptides can penetrate deeply into the skin and can help support collagen production. Also, don’t forget to apply sunscreen with a high SPF every single day. Try our best collagen products; The collagen type we use in our Simply Skincare products is Hydrolyzed Marine Collagen, to promote natural collagen protein production in the skin and body. It is sustainable and completely natural.

Not only can a will legally protect your spouse, children, and assets, it can also spell out exactly how you would like things handled after you have passed on. Making a Will - some important decisions, by Mike Bradley of Integrity Wills

A professional Will Writers job is to take your instructions and translate them into your Will,

creating a document which accurately reflects your wishes. The Will needs to be understood by your executors and most importantly, The Probate Court, to ensure that it is proved quickly, thus minimising any problems after your death which could cause delays leading to hardship for your loved-ones.

THE APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTORS You may choose to appoint a member of your family, a prime beneficiary or close friend to act as an executor. Remember, an executor can also be a beneficiary. If you do need to appoint a professional executor, you could opt for either a solicitor, chartered accountant or a Trust Corporation to act on your behalf.

APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIANS If you have children (under the age of 18) you will need to appoint guardians. It may be helpful to make at least one guardian a joint executor as they have a right to money from your estate to help towards the upbringing of your child. This amount can be restricted to a certain amount or could be left in a trust fund. If you have a child with additional needs, who are likely to require specialist care either at home or in the care of the Local Authority, a trust will be required to ensure adequate funds are available for their future.

PROPERTY How you hold your property will determine how it passes on after your death. As ‘joint tenants’ your share will pass on to the survivor automatically. If you wish to pass your ‘interest’ in the property to your children or others, you should hold your property as ‘tenants in common’. More in-depth information can be discussed with your consultant.

Thame Town Awards are back and it’s time to celebrate our local unsung heroes! Do you know someone who lives, works, studies, or contributes to life in Thame that deserves a Town Award? If so, nominate them! You can make your nomination online via the Town Council’s website, or collect a form from the Town Hall. The Town Awards launched in 2009 and, this year more than ever, celebrate the amazing local residents and businesses who help their neighbours, support local groups or go out of their way for others to make our community a safer, more vibrant and happier place to live. Employer of the Year A local employer that has gone the extra mile to the benefit of its employees and the wider community e.g. supporting community initiatives, offering opportunities and practicing sustainability (employers can nominate themselves for this award). Creative Arts Contribution Someone of any age who excels in the Creative Arts and/or has contributed to the creativity of our town. This award covers a wide range of people – from the star of the show to the behind-the-scenes team and everyone in between. Nominations are welcome for any form of creativity. Service with a Smile There are so many individuals and businesses who consistently provide a friendly service in Thame, but who do you know that should be recognised for it this year? We’re not just looking for shop assistants – we also want to hear about opticians, carers, cleaners and doctors, to name but a few! Sporting Contribution This could be someone (or a team), of any age, who deserves a gold medal for their commitment to a sport or contribution to local sports. News & Events Volunteer of the Year Thame thrives on individuals and organisations who selflessly give their time to help others in our community. From fundraisers to friendly neighbours, there are plenty to choose from but who do you think deserves to be awarded Volunteer of the Year? Volunteer Group of the Year A volunteer group that has worked tirelessly for the good of our community. This could be a charity, but we also welcome nominations for less formal volunteer groups, who might have formed in response to the pandemic, or any volunteer group that makes a positive difference to their community. To date, the Town Awards panel has awarded 66 Town Awards to local people. Chair of the Town Awards Panel, Alex Bond, explains more about the awards: “It has been a difficult year so it’s great to be able to recognise those living, working and volunteering in Thame. The awards are well-established and supported by the Town Council as well as local sponsors. If you know someone or a volunteer group who has gone that extra mile to make a difference to others, I would urge you to nominate them for an award.” Anyone can make a nomination. Visit www.thametowncouncil.gov.uk/town-awards/ and complete the online form, or pop into the Town Hall Information Centre and pick up a nomination form. Be sure to follow the Town Awards Facebook page ‘Thame Town Awards’ and on Twitter #ThameAwards to be one of the first to find out who has won a Town Award this year. Nominations close on Thursday 19 August. Please visit www.thametowncouncil.gov.uk/town-awards for terms and conditions.

What you need to know about Cantilever Staircases ... Cantilever staircases are made to appear as though the stair treads are floating in the air. Stone versions of these sweeping, often spiralling staircases were first built by stone masons in 17th century France. They quickly came to the UK and the first cantilever staircase in England is said to have been built at Queen’s House in Greenwich in 1629. They gained popularity in the 18th century across England and Europe as a mark of elegance and wealth. Next time you visit a National Trust or similar property, look out for a cantilever staircase. Cantilever staircases are still popular today and we have built many in homes across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Creating these graceful staircases is one of our passion projects at Coulon Stone as it involves a huge amount of skill and craftsmanship. Each staircase is completely bespoke. The treads are cut from blocks of stone using our CNC machine and then hand finished by our stone masons. A traditional cantilever staircase works similarly to an arch, with each tread sat on the others shoulder with the weight moving down. Around 150mm of one end of each tread is bricked in to the wall to maximise support. Some customers opt for a modern version of the traditional cantilever look which involves a steel frame running through the staircase or a concrete frame, both of which are then clad in stone. Whilst not traditionally cantilevered they still look incredibly impressive. Hard natural stones work best. We enjoy working with hard limestones, like those from Egypt which closely resemble marble, or hard Italian marbles. It’s important when choosing the stone we look for vents, or small cracks as these stones won’t work. For obvious reasons when creating a staircase we need a strong, durable material. Staircase projects, particularly traditional cantilevered ones take around two months for us to complete. Most home owners we’ve worked with have a structural engineer working on the project and we’re happy to work alongside them. For more information about how to go about your cantilever staircase project please get in touch via email: info@coulonstone.com or call: 01494 484333

Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford

There’s always more – more to do, more to finish, more to start. But with gardening there’s more to gain, the space you have for growing is beautiful when packed and abundant. How do we do this on a budget? The joy of seed. Latent new life in its most protected form is now setting and ripening in annuals and early flowering perennials around & about. In truth there is always seed to harvest. But the power of the dry hot days desiccate the parent flower and finish the seed of those early spring plants.

I love local scrumping for seed from roads & paths around Chinnor, or an obliging friend’s garden. At the moment Aquilegia (columbine), Nigela (love in a mist) are good to go. But the season has been slow so you have an extra chance to catch a glance at a good looking Hollyhock or Poppy & revisit later for a seed that will hopefully come true to type and if not there’s always the joy of the unexpected in the unique progeny of the plants you have grown.

Soon: Calendula (marigolds), Purple Toadflax (Linaria), Holly Hock (Alcea) & annual Opium Poppies (Paparva somnifera) will be dry & ready for collection.

To harvest: take a paper bag or envelope, so as not to trap in any moisture &

rot the seeds. Place over the flower head whilst still attached to the plant, bend it downwards & cut or snap the seed head into the bag. The seeds will be primed for distribution and you could lose them if you pick first. Store in a dry place for early spring sowing next year. Happy foraging.
