Following on from the Euro 2016 and the impending Olympic games starting later this month, I have launched a new feature (see page 23) with local PE teacher and sports enthusiast, Craig Williams. Craig, who is the founder of CW Soccer School based in Chinnor, will be featuring regularly over the coming months offering tips and advice on all things sport related. So please, if you have any questions regarding sport, do post them on our Facebook page and I will put them to Craig. Bring a little bit of holiday hedonism home with a stone bathroom By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd

W

arm feet on the cool, marble floor tiles of your hotel bathroom, after a dreamy day of sunning on the sand...bliss. Marble bathrooms are a welcomed bit of luxury on a holiday and often stir so much excitement, we see pictures of them in people’s holiday snaps. So why wait until your next holiday for that feeling under your feet? We’ve put together some of the benefits of a marble bathroom, as well as other natural stones which make equally beautiful bathrooms.

Marble: With its charming veins and glossy finish, marble has represented luxury living for centuries. But it’s also very practical; it’s extremely hard, easy to clean, and if correctly sealed, it won’t stain easily. There are also vast design options, whilst the classic image of marble is white and grey, there are greens, blues, browns, blacks and creams. Limestone & Travertine: Generally limestones and travertines are

known for being softer stones, but they stand up very well in bathrooms. Similarly to marble, they are hard, easy to clean and if correctly sealed, won’t stain easily. Limestones and travertines create a very warm look and as well as plush and glossy, they can also be finished with a rustic, tumbled feel.

Slate:Slate is a very practical choice for bathrooms, as it again is very hard, easy to clean and if correctly sealed, won’t stain easily. Slate has an earthy warmth to it and will perfectly compliment a rustic design, as well as a minimalistic one. For inspiration visit our website or showroom (in Stokenchurch) where you can look through our stones and take samples home with you. If you would like a FREE quote, email or bring us some measurements and a rough idea of the stone you would like.

BUZZ OfFF 10 things you might not know about wasps Wasps… The very word tends to cause an involuntary shudder in most people. Unlike bees, you won’t see any charities asking you to do your bit to save them. Most species don’t pollinate plants and many of us have been stung by a wasp at one point, so it’s easy to dismiss them as just a pointless nuisance. And yet, dig a little deeper and they’re actually quite fascinating creatures. •

There are thousands of different species of wasps, from the Common Wasp that targets our summer picnics, to the more unusual Ruby-Tailed Wasp.

The Asian Giant Hornet can reach 5cm in length. (Imagine one of those attacking your jam sandwich.)

While some live in colonies, just like bees, other species are solitary, and rather anti-social.

They’re predatory. The adult female of some species will actually lay its eggs on the larvae of another insect, or inside an adult insect. Once hatched, the wasp larvae will eat its host.

The adult wasp captures and paralyses insects to feed to its growing larvae.

While the above sounds rather unpleasant, it does have its advantages for humans, as wasps can help to control many of the insects that plague our crops. Some farmers actively encourage wasps for this reason. In Brazil, for example, sugarcane farmers buy parasitic wasps in order to kill a particular moth known as the Sugarcane Borer.

While we think of wasps as yellow and black, they do come in other colours, including red, blue and green, and pure black.

Social wasps make their nests by chewing up bits of wood and making a substance with it that’s very similar to paper.

Up to 10,000 wasps can live in one nest.

An old wasp nest won’t be used by a new queen, so they’re usually only inhabited for one year.

Fascinating though they may be, most of us would still rather not have a wasp nest in our house or garden. You can get insecticides to try to kill the wasps yourself, but it’s rather more sensible to call in the experts - we have two on the adjacent page. If you’d rather not kill the wasps, there are humane ways to move the nest or encourage them to vacate it, but they’re not fool proof and you will need to take precautions to avoid getting stung. Before doing anything, do make sure that they’re wasps, rather than bees. A bee colony is usually safe to leave where it is, but if you want it moved, your local beekeeping association should be able to help.

on the Mic... Emusic groups or events in the area and finding very month we will be focussing on particular

out more about our local musicians. In this issue we are going to focus This month we are going to focus on Billy Watman, a fantastic local guitarist who is destined for great things!

Q: What first attracted you to guitar?

A

: My Dad had an old ukulele, as soon as I was old enough to hold it I started on that, then I had a 3/4 size electric guitar - don’t know what attracted me to them but I would never put them down. I used to sit for hours and hours watching YouTube videos and copying them. I’ve been collecting guitars ever since! Eventually I settled on nylon string as my preference, I’ve recently been endorsed by a German guitar manufacturer called Ortega Guitars.

Q: How did you find your unique style?

A

: It kind of evolved really, when I was younger I used to strum and sing a bit, but I was always most interested in complex fingerstyle playing, so I drifted more and more into that and eventually I ended up studying classically. In 2014 I auditioned for a place at the Purcell School of Music, which is an amazing place and I would encourage any budding young musicians to check it out. Nowadays I apply my classical training to a variety of styles of music, from Pop and Rock through to Jazz and Trance. There are lots of great singer songwriter guitarists around, but I wanted to do something unique and different….Oh, and I wear a hat!

Q A

: Who influences you musically?

: Loads of people, I like many styles of music from metal to classical - but flamenco and fingerstyle guitarists are my favourites - I would say Rodrigo y Gabriela, Tommy Emmanuel, Igor Presnyakov, Thomas Zwijsen and Sungha Jung are the main influences.

Q A

: What are your most significant performances so far?

: Probably some of my online videos to be honest, I have had some of my stuff shared by “Queen”, that has to top the list - and altogether my videos now have well over 10,000,000 views. Live performances I would say Edinburgh Fringe,

Towersey Festival, Beacon Festival, BBC Radio Oxford, and of course the Sky TV Guitar Star.

Q A

: What have you got coming up?

: Lots this summer, I am on Sky TV at the moment in the Sky Arts “Guitar Star” competition, which has been a fantastic experience, I have had the chance to work with George Benson, Tony Visconti, Milos Karadaglic, Wilko Johnson, Jon Gomm and Nitin Sawhney and played in some of the best recording studios in the country. This summer I have already played at Beacon Festival and Music in the Park Thame. I have 2 weeks booked at the Edinburgh Fringe in August, and am hoping to play at Towersey again. I am also involved with a project called ‘Busk In London’ and will be performing in Trafalgar Square in July as part of that. I’ve also just finished recording my new CD “Escape From Reality” which can be ordered from my website and iTunes.

Q A

: Howcan you be contacted?

: Through my website www.billywatman.com or Facebook page “Billy Watman Music” please give my page a like!!

Welcome...

My name is Craig Williams and I’m company director of CW Soccer Schools based in Chinnor. We are a football coaching & multi-sport business offering holiday courses, birthday parties, 1 to 1 coaching and much more. I will be writing an article each month giving you news, ideas, tips and general sporting chit chat.

I

have been a professional qualified Sports Coach for over 7 years and have worked in several local primary schools around Oxfordshire passing on my many hours of learning to the children of today. I now currently work at a primary school in Buckinghamshire as a sports specialist responsible for all PE aspects of the school curriculum. My main sport is Football, but I hold qualifications and a wide knowledge in many other sports such as Cricket, Tag Rugby, Netball, Basketball & Gymnastics. As a side hobby and in the not so many hours of spare time I’m Assistant Manager at UHLSPORT Hellenic League side Chinnor FC.

My side business CW Soccer Schools opened in January of this year and since our first course in February half term, we have already almost doubled in size and now offer many more services. Our courses are designed for boys and girls of all abilities and are great for beginners or advanced players aged from 5 to 12 years. All our courses at present are held at The Chinnor Community Pavilion. The 1.4 million building is a great facility for all of our courses and provides us with a first class venue. For more information about CW Soccer Schools, please visit: www.cwsoccerschools.com.

ENGLANDS DRAMATIC EXIT FROM EURO 2016 Attempting to unpick the strands of England’s latest early exit from a major international tournament is not a simple task. One of the possible culprits, of course, has already gone - Manager Roy Hodgson falling on his sword in the wake of the defeat to Iceland . The most obvious place to start. Hodgson has now led England through three major tournament failures; he took charge of a smooth qualifying campaign but from there, as usual, things unravelled quickly in the tournament proper. The biggest indictment of Hodgson is that, four years into his reign as England manager—a reign now over, in the aftermath of England’s defeat—he had little idea as to the makeup of his best side. Not all blame can lie with the manager. It stands to reason, he can articulate his plans as well or badly as possible, but he cannot scuff shots, misplace passes, run into team mates himself. England made all of those mistakes and more against Iceland, with Rooney, the captain, particularly culpable. The debate on who to blame will continue for years as do many things in football. But as always we must remain positive and keep doing the right things at grassroots level to help develop players in the correct way.

Get out on the

Water

There are more than 2,000 miles of waterways around Britain, so why not make the most of them? Take a stroll: From a relaxing amble after Sunday lunch, to a full day’s hike,

our waterways offer numerous opportunities for walking. There are many circular routes you can take and the toll-paths are car-free. The Newton Poppleford & River Otter walk in Devon, for example, is a beautiful walk along the river, stopping off in the picturesque village of Tipton St John. Find a route near you at www.ifootpath.com.

Cycle: Many of the canal paths are ideal for cycling. Pick up an Ordnance Survey map, or plan

your route with www.sustrans.org.uk. The Trans Pennine Trail is a good option, with more than 60% of the route being traffic-free and fairly flat.

Enjoy a leisurely boat ride: Whether

you hire a narrow boat for a day, or a week, boating is clearly one of the best ways to enjoy Britain’s waterways. Visit www.waterways.org.uk for advice and tips. There are more than 100 boat hire firms, with many of the larger ones offering the option to pick up and drop off at different locations. You don’t need any previous experience, as most firms will give you a short training course before you set off.

Try canoeing: Almost 2 million people go canoeing in Britain. It’s a great way to keep fit while exploring the countryside. Check out www.canoe-england.org.uk for inspiration. Trails are colour coded from easy to challenging, so you can pick a route to suit your ability. Purton to Sharpness on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, for example, is classed as an ideal route for beginners. You’ll pass through several villages on route, so may even be able to stop off for a quick cuppa. You need a license to paddle on many of Britain’s waterways, which can be bought from the Canal and River Trust: www.canalrivertrust.org.uk Feeling adventurous?

We might think of white water rafting as something to do on holiday, but there are a few British centres. The National White Water Centre, for example, runs sessions on the Welsh mountain river Afon Tryweryn, with prices starting from just £35 for a taster lesson.

Cast off: A leisurely day’s fishing can be a great way to unwind. You will need to purchase a rod fishing license from the Post Office before you cast off. An annual license starts at £27, though you can also buy licenses for shorter periods of time from just £3.75. Fishing rights are often owned by a local fishing club, but a Waterway Wanderers permit (£20 a year) gives you access to most stretches. Eating Out?

Many people, even those with normal levels of hearing, can struggle to understand conversations in particularly noisy environments. If you have reduced hearing ability, even to a small degree you will find that these challenging situations are magnified and make certain social situations very hard work and extremely fatiguing.

Don’t worry you are not on your own, most people

from the age of 45 are starting to experience some form of hearing challenge and now, sadly, with the increase in exposure to ear-buds the problem is kicking in much younger. The best solution is usually digital hearing aids but even some small changes can help to make the most of your hearing when you are eating out and about. 1) If possible, select you venue carefully. You may find it easier to hear in a country pub than a large town pizzeria for instance. This is simply due to softer furnishings, lower ceilings and curtains. 2) Once you have selected a restaurant, request a quiet table and sit with your back to the wall. Restaurants can be one of the most challenging situations for hearing conversations. With lots of people talking and hard surfaces creating echoes, many people struggle to hear. Asking for a table away from the kitchen and the door may minimise background noise. Also, sitting in a corner or with your back to the wall reduces distractions, as well as allowing you to look at people as they are speaking. If possible sit well away from any music speakers - and if necessary ask the proprietor to turn the music down - you will be doing everyone a favour! It may also be a good idea, but not very easy, to find a seat with good lighting so that you can use your eyes to read lips and look for visual clues.

3) Be realistic and focus on one conversation at a time. In large groups in social settings people often tend to talk over each other. It is less stressful and more rewarding to focus on speaking to one person rather than following a group conversation. Try to stand or sit close to the person you are interacting with, and make sure that you can see their face. You can always suggest that as a group, you all change seats at several points in the evening. Again you will be doing every one a favour, it is a fact - we all struggle to hear in noise! 4) Learn to lip read. Most of us naturally lip read to some extent, but brushing up on your skills could give you an advantage in difficult listening environments. Remember to ask people to speak clearly and not to cover their mouths when you have a conversation. 5) The single most important point is do not give up on your social life because you can’t hear, social interactions are a vital element to life. It is social isolation that is one of the major factors in speeding up the effects of dementia. We all hear about the benefits of keeping our brains active, well the truth is that social interactions are the single most effective way of doing this. It is important that you keep an eye out for friends that you notice don’t come out anymore - don’t let them give up on life because of their hearing.

Restore Your Health

With Bowen Therapy

The Bowen technique is a gentle hands on, non-invasive complementary therapy, which was introduced to the UK from Australia in 1992. Bowen works with the body’s own healing systems. Rather than ‘making’’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the balancing changes it needs. With fingers and thumbs the Bowen practitioner makes rolling movements over fascia, at precise points on the body. No hard tissue manipulation or force is used. As a Bowen practitioner my job is twofold: 1.

To initially address your pain and / or address your pain and the issues you present with moving you to better balance.

2.

To assist in guiding you to achieve the level of health you want.

It is, however, not my job to dictate terms, but to provide options.

The law of Nature requires a balance of the following... •

Physical exercise and good posture, fresh air and sunshine, pure water and proper nutrition, proper sleep, relaxation, recreation.

Utopia? Sadly, this is rarely achieved as we all stray from the path and engage in practices that go against the Natural Laws. Suddenly the presence of pain emerges in our lives and becomes a reality, which comes in a variety of packages e.g. Back Pain, Neck pain, Headaches, Fatigue, Heart problems.

Generally the quickest way to silence a pain is by taking a drug or painkillers; however this is only a temporary measure at best and it may be more suitably treated by Bowen/NST therapy. Bowen

Therapy works to correct the energy balance which will involve working towards: reduction of pain levels, improvement in diet and general feeling of wellbeing. Following my Children’s Clinic in April I have continued to see 6 children regularly and have been able to help with issues of Eczema, teething, head banging, sleep patterns, unsettled behaviour and anxiety. Recently I received this lovely message from a very active lady who came to see me last week. Regular Bowen sessions are helping to manage chronic pain, whilst waiting for hip surgery: “You are wonderful - feeling so much better, thank you! I have been pottering around gently. The terrible pain has eased thanks to your efforts” Followed by “Thank you - You must have done some thorough work, I slept for an hour yesterday afternoon and nearly 9 hours last night!” In a few cases medical intervention has been necessary, in which I have had an input, and therefore have seen client’s pre and post operatively. Physical therapy alone, however, will not always provide the perfect solution: ongoing clinical work often goes hand in hand with emotional and nutritional support and proper hydration, all of which depend on the willingness of the individual, to whom I will advise accordingly.

BODY

its the only place you

have to live...

Nainesh Vasistha, of Thame Therapy Clinic explains how a well-functioning lymphatic system contributes to healthy body tissue and plays an important part in the body’s immune responses.

M

ost people are familiar with the body’s circulatory system that carries blood to and from the tissues, but few understand there is another equally vital system of vessels – the lymphatic system that removes cell wastes, proteins, excess fluid, viruses, and bacteria. Like roots of a tree, the lymphatic system starts as tiny vessels that eventually branch into larger tubes resulting in a network of lymph vessels and lymph nodes.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) therapy is designed to improve functioning of the lymphatic system by using light pressure and gentle, rhythmical movement of the skin which stimulate contraction of lymphatic vessels. As a result a greater amount of metabolic waste products and excess fluid are removed from the body’s tissues and enter this lymphatic system. The fluid, or lymph, passes through lymph nodes acting as biological filtration stations cleaning and destroying dead cells, bacteria and other waste products, enabling clean lymph to return to the blood system.

MLD can benefit everyone - here’s why: After a sports injury or surgery, including breaks, fractures, torn ligaments and sprains - areas with swelling and trauma struggle to deal with excess fluid. MLD can move this excess fluid to other areas of the body, where the undamaged or un-overloaded lymphatic system can take it up, thus reducing congestion at local lymph nodes. At a micro-level rubbish is cleared away faster, swelling and pain is reduced and healing is speeded up. MLD may be also particularly helpful for hip and knee replacements and cosmetic surgery. Because it’s so gentle, MLD is well tolerated by patients suffering with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. They often experience sore trigger points throughout the body and by encouraging lymph flow and removing waste products, this gentle form of bodywork can help restore immune function and improve vitality. MLD can have a pain-relieving and calming effect on the whole nervous system; during treatment, touch receptors in the skin send messages to the brain, which in turn block messages from pain receptors. Surgical procedures involving lymph node removal, such as breast cancer surgery, can cause limbs to swell, this condition is called lymphoedema. MLD is now widely accepted and plays a key part in the treatment of both primary and secondary lymphoedemas.

In the spotlight... Ford Kuga

Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.

MOTORING

The Kuga came on to the scene in 2008. Built in two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive it was Ford’s response to SUVs, such as the Nissan Qashqai. It was also built to challenge more established 4x4s, such as the Honda CR-V.

While it is no rocket ship, the Kuga 1.5T Ecoboost,

on test here, does pick up pace fairly well (0-62mph in 9.7s) and feels particularly nippy around town. Its manual six-speed gearbox has a positive, smooth, action and the Ford delivers a relaxing, yet wellordered ride at low speeds. The steering is light and direct – and this makes city driving and parking a breeze. Alas, there is far too much din in the road and wind noise department for the Kuga to be a serious motorway vessel. Safety is first-rate, though, with side and curtain airbags helping it achieve a five-star Euro NCAP crash-test result. Inside, the Kuga is quite spacious in the front, but its plunging roofline intrudes on headroom for taller passengers in the rear. Legroom for anyone approaching six-feet tall is also limited, however it’s a fine area for kids to sit comfortably. The 406-litre boot is bigger than the Ford Focus’ 316-litre offering – making the loading of a bulky pushchair and the weekly supermarket shopping even less of a hassle. As alluded to earlier, the Kuga’s key rival is the Nissan Qashqai, with other opponents including the Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan. All of their boots are even bigger than the Ford’s by some margin. In fairness, though, the Ford Kuga Zetec 1.5T EcoBoost makes a good buy. It offers a decent mix of performance and size for families looking for a school-run-mobile. It is also front-wheel-drive - and this variant is really what

you should try and get, unless you are desperate for 4x4 traction and off-road ability. Front-wheel-drive Kugas are a little bit cheaper to run than the fourwheel-drive versions and, if buying used, may well have been better cared for. The current Kuga is smart enough and has a generally reliable history, although it is starting to come over as a tad dated – but at least it’s a safe car. Fortunately, we won’t have too long to wait for a fresh Kuga. The Blue Oval hopes to fight the BMW X3 with a chicer, more elegant version of the SUV at the end of this year.

FOREVER

pet-friendly F

orever’s UK and Ireland Head Offices (Longbridge Manor and Magheramorne House) are both beautiful manor houses surrounded by wildlife. The staff there often enjoy watching squirrels and rabbits frolic across the lawn, and in Warwick they even have a family of ducks who waddle up to the office window each morning. The wellbeing of animals is enormously important to Forever, forming an integral part of the ethics that surround the company - they really do love our four-legged friends (and the ducks of course).

Consumers can rest assured in the knowledge that no Forever products have been tested on animals. The company ethics are strongly against all forms of animal testing at every stage of production, and they do not make contracts with any other laboratories that conduct animal testing. In fact, many of the products can actually benefit the health and wellbeing of members of the animal kingdom. Here are a few pet-friendly products that animal lovers everywhere should get their paws on...

All these products are available to buy via Forever Business Owner Emma Penfold (07707 386034).

If your pet is suffering from any condition or taking medication, do speak to your vet before using these products.

Help keep your dog

COOL THIS SUMMER As temperatures rise, the Blue Cross offer tips and advice for keeping your dog safe throughout the heat of the summer so you can all have fun together...

Dogs can suffer fatal heatstroke within minutes.

Unlike humans, dogs can’t sweat through their skin and so they rely on panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and nose to regulate their body temperature and keep cool. Imagine wearing a thick winter coat on a hot summer’s day and you’ll understand why dogs succumb to heatstroke so easily.

On hot days, walk your dog during the cooler parts of the day, in the early morning and late evening.

Watch your pet for signs of over-heating, including heavy panting and loss of energy. If you recognise these signs when on a walk, stop, find a shady spot and give your dog water. Never leave your dog (or any pet) alone in a car, even with the windows open.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs include collapse, excessive panting, and dribbling.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from the condition, move them to a cool place, preferably with a draught, wet their coat with cool - not freezing - water, and contact your vet immediately.

Make cooling tasty treats by making ice cubes with your dog’s favourite food inside or stuff a Kong and pop it in the freezer.

Be particularly careful with short nosed dogs such as bull breeds, boxers, pugs, older dogs, and those that are overweight. These dogs can get heatstroke simply by running around.

Once a dog shows signs of heatstroke the damage is often already done, which is why it’s so important to prevent it.

Preventing Heatstroke •

Make sure your dog has access to clean water at all times, ideally a large bowl filled to the brim. Carry water and a bowl with you on walks.
