GET THE LOOK Natural stone worktops make hosting Christmas dinner dreamy...
By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
Having everyone over for Christmas is the ultimate opportunity to impress friends and family with your culinary and hosting skills. (It’s also an opportunity to cook those sloppy sprouts exactly how you like them - sautéed with chestnuts). However, it can be incredibly stressful, particularly when it comes to the cooking. Hot pots and pans all over the place, food splashed on the sides, before a hurried wipe down before everyone arrives.
Keep Christmas Day stress to a minimum by updating your worktop with a natural stone or composite quartz. They’re the most durable surfaces in the world and easy to maintain. We break down the best choices for a busy kitchen. Granite – the most durable of all the natural stones, granite is non-porous making it hygienic and stain resistant, so you don’t need to worry about spillages. It doesn’t need any special treatment, just wipe it down with a non-abrasive surface cleaner and soft cloth. It’s also heat resistant, meaning you can put pots straight from the oven on to it. They also come in a huge variety of colours and textures, from soft whites and greys, to deep golds and emeralds. Composite Quartz (e.g. Silestone) – Manmade from natural stones and held together with resin, composite quartz is a purpose made kitchen surface. They’re mostly stain and heat resistant (speak to your stone mason or kitchen fitter for details). They’re extremely easy to look after, particularly as most are built with anti-bacterial properties. They come in a huge variety of colours and textures including mock-marbles and crisp whites. Lapitec – Another manmade surface, Lapitec is hailed as the most durable material in the world. It’s stain, scratch and heat resistant and antibacterial. Coulon Stone are an approved Lapitec fabricator so contact us for more information. Slate - another extremely durable natural stone. Easy to wipe down, and resistant of stains, particularly when sealed by your stone mason prior to fitting. Slate is also heat resistant. As well as a smooth texture, slate can come flame brushed for a rustic feel. And if you’re worried about starting kitchen renovations just weeks before Christmas, Coulon Stone aim for a seven day turnaround. This includes helping you decide which stone is best for you, templating, cutting the worktop and fitting. For more information, call us on 01494 484333, email us on info@coulonstone.com or visit our showroom on Wycombe Road, Stokenchurch.

In the spotlight...
MOTORING
Review: Facelift of Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo
@carwriteups The freshly revised Skoda Fabia doesn’t smack you in the face with its changes – it’s more subtle than that, as motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay, reports.
T
he designers have given the Fabia slimmer lights, new rear bumper reflectors and a slightly wider front grille. And that’s almost it for the outside. Oh, and on the flagship Monte Carlo model I drove, 18-inch alloys are available as well as LED brake lights that come as part of the package. Hang on, though – there’s a little more. A fuel filler flap isn’t the first place I usually look when reviewing a car, but the Fabia’s is worth investigating. Why? Well, the ice scraper that was fitted on the last generation now doubles as a tyre tread depth gauge. It’s also a magnifying glass, but it just made my eyes go all fuzzy looking through it. Changes inside are limited. There are some fresh interior colours and trims, two additional USB slots for rear seat occupants’ use and marginally modified graphics on the dials. It’s a clean and practical cabin, but it’s lacklustre, with hard scratchy plastics instead of the soft-touch ones you get in its cousin, the VW Polo. That said, it feels well put together, and the Fabia’s 330-litre cargo capacity means it has one the largest boots in the segment. Importantly, the ditching of the 1.4-litre diesel now makes the Fabia range a petrol-only one. All now house 1.0-litre three-cylinder engines in different states of tune, along with an exhaust particulate filter to cut emissions. As mentioned, I was handed the keys to the Monte Carlo. The 95PS unit comes with a five-speed manual transmission which is light and easy-to-use. Mind you; I kept looking for a sixth gear, meaning I did crunch the ‘box a couple of times. Oops, silly me. The 1.0-litre powerplant is relaxed, and the Monte Carlo’s stiffer set springs and lower ride height make things quite fun. Of course, with an engine this small you’re never going to set the tarmac alight, but you can still get to 62mph in 10.8s and on to a top speed of 114mph. More significantly, it’ll do over 60mpg, making it an efficient form of transport. It’s such an easy supermini to pilot, and it’s comfortable for fourup - and quiet, too.
20
Throughout the Fabia line-up, every model, apart from the basic ‘S,’ has been reduced in price. The entrylevel car is now around £600 more expensive, but it does get better kit, such as a trip computer, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, autonomous emergency braking and LED daytime running lights. Away from the ‘S’, you get the ‘SE’, ‘Colour Edition’, ‘SE L’, and Monte Carlo – all with a price drop ranging between £55 and £355. This is great value, especially if you compare VW’s Polo, which is around £1000 more with a like-for-like engine and trim level. Alas, if you like the sound of this car, but you happen to be a hot-hatch aficionado, you’ll be left wanting. Skoda won’t be launching a vRS version of this incarnation of Fabia any time soon.

Making a Will
H
Some important decisions.
aving made the decision to make your Will, there are some important points you need to consider before meeting with a Will Writer. By having many of the answers available it will leave more time to discuss the other important issues which may arise during the consultation. A professional Will Writers job is to take your instructions and translate them into your Will, creating a document which accurately reflects your wishes. The Will needs to be understood by your executors and most importantly, The Probate Court, to ensure that it is proved quickly, thus minimising any problems after your death which could cause delays leading to hardship for your loved-ones.
THE APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTORS You may choose to appoint a member of your family, a prime beneficiary or close friend to act as an executor. Remember, an executor can also be a beneficiary. If you do need to appoint a professional executor, you could opt for either a solicitor, chartered accountant or a Trust Corporation to act on your
behalf. Your Will Consultant will be able to advise on the best option for your circumstances.
APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIANS If you have children (under the age of 18) you will need to appoint guardians. It may be helpful to make at least one guardian a joint executor as they have a right to money from your estate to help towards the upbringing of your child. This amount can be restricted to a certain amount or could be left in a trust fund. If you have a child with additional needs, who are likely to require specialist care either at home or in the care of the Local Authority, a trust will be required to ensure adequate funds are available for their future.
PROPERTY How you hold your property will determine how it passes on after your death. As ‘joint tenants’ your share will pass on to the survivor automatically. If you wish to pass your ‘interest’ in the property to your children or others, you should hold your property as ‘tenants in common’. More in-depth information can be discussed with your consultant. For more in-depth information or experienced advice regarding Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Funeral Plans contact Michael Bradley on 01844 281013 or 07868 746406.

Food Intolerance & sensitivity testing
Do you suffer with abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, headaches? These can be some of the symptoms associated with intolerance or sensitivity to certain foods. This article, by Thame Therapy Clinic’s Homeopathy Therapist, Selina Hatherley (RSHom) explains all about Vega Testing.
www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk
Vega
testing can test for sensitivity to substances such as wheat, dairy, pollens and chemicals, as well as testing for vitamin and mineral imbalance. As a Vega practitioner, I can use this simple test to help identify which substances are causing problems. You may or may not have some idea of the food or food groups that cause you a problem. However, it is really useful to keep a food diary for at least a week before testing. - Note what you eat & drink - When you eat & drink - How you feel after you eat or drink
It is important that you drink plenty of water before, as testing is most effective when you are hydrated. The Vega Test method uses two hand electrodes – one the patient holds, the other is a testing “pen” used by the practitioner. Both electrodes are attached to the Vega machine. Vials of substances – food, drink, chemical etc – are put into the machine while the practitioner presses the testing pen onto an acupressure point on the patient’s hand. The response of the patient’s body to each substance is determined by change in electromagnetic conductivity and shown on the machine’s voltage meter. Once problematic substances have been identified, we will discuss whether they need to be avoided, or whether combinations of foods may need to be changed or avoided. It is useful to keep a food diary for a month until the next follow up appointment as we will also talk about diet, lifestyle, and medical history, and as a registered homeopath, I will normally give a remedy to help with symptoms. The Vega machine can also test for sensitivity to pollens and other substances – you can even bring something along, such as washing powder or medication to be tested in the machine.
* SPECIAL OFFER *
10% Discount on first appointments booked in December 2018 or January 2019 at Thame Therapy Clinic
Note: Homeopathy is safe for all ages and all stages. Vega testing is not suitable for those in pregnancy or with a pacemaker. Always check with your GP if you have any concerns about your health.

Wishing all Look Local readers a very
Happy Christmas Reporting on A Very Happy Ending! As 2018 comes to a close I would like to report on an event that has a very special place in my heart. Jessica Willard married Joseph Knight on Saturday 28th July - I was invited to a wonderful and emotional wedding.
This story begins on August 19th 2012.... Jessie and Joe were with my son Tom and a group of friends on holiday in Portugal. I received a call saying that Jessie was in hospital in Faro having fallen 5 metres from a balcony, smashing her head as she fell on marble steps. I arrived at the hospital before her parents arrived, to be greeted by a nurse saying ‘please tell her friends that she may not survive’ - I didn’t! The first time I met Jessie was in intensive care, she was in an induced coma with catastrophic brain damage. Tom met Jessie at Uni and Joe was a school friend. Jessie was about to start a new graduate career in London, with plans to flat share with her friends. They were in the waiting room, in shock. Her parents arrived. The situation was beyond horrific. However (in brief and taken from The Willard Family’s testimonial - BTPA magazine 2013)… “3 weeks later Jessie was taken by air ambulance to The Neuro science unit at the John Radcliffe in Oxford. She was very ill, her left vocal cord was paralysed, she had no co-ordination and was in an agitated state.”
We continued treatments for many weeks and then months. The purpose was to help her balance mentally and emotionally and to help her physically with her enormous injuries to her back and neck. I saw Jessie for Bowen just before she got married, complications post accident continue but this gorgeous and remarkable young lady is now a teacher and embarking on married life. The purpose of this story is to say that Bowen / NST may be able to help with both physical and mental issues, which are inextricably linked. Awareness of Bowen Therapy and its benefits is on the increase thanks to the enormous amount of National and Local press coverage received over recent years in publications such as, ‘What Doctors Don’t Tell You’ ‘Complementary Therapists Magazine’ ‘BTPA Magazine’ and ‘Look Local Magazine’. So as we enter a new year, if there’s any health issue plaguing your life, however large or small in may seem, please do contact me for a consultation and in the meantime, have a wonderful Christmas. Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.
Whilst in Portugal I offered to treat Jessie when she was back in the UK, and with the agreement of her parents and the medics I was able to start seeing her when she got back to the JR. After her first Bowen session I received a call… ‘Jessie can speak… the consultant said she wouldn’t be able to talk in more than a whisper!’

Christmas Pudding Cheesecake
(Serves 10)
Ingredients: For the base: 200g ginger nut biscuits, crushed | 30g light muscovado sugar 1 tsp flaky sea salt | 110g unsalted butter, melted.
For the filling: 240g cooked Christmas pudding – leftovers or a small one | 30ml brandy 30ml stout | 1 orange, zested | 2 x 280g tubs full-fat cream cheese | 300ml pot double cream 200g light muscovado sugar | 2 tsp vanilla paste or seeds from 2 vanilla pods. To decorate: 2 clementines | light muscovado sugar, for sprinkling
Method: 1. To make the base, mix the gingernut biscuits and sugar in a large bowl and sprinkle in the flaky salt. Pour in the melted butter and mix with a wooden spoon to form a biscuit crumb-like mixture. Press evenly into a 20cm round springform cake tin (or tin lined with foil) - Chill in the fridge for 30 mins until set. 2. Put the Christmas pudding, brandy, stout and orange zest in a blender, and whizz to a purée. Using an electric hand whisk, beat the cream cheese with the double cream, sugar and vanilla seeds or paste, then fold through the purée. Spread the mixture over the biscuit base and leave to chill in the fridge overnight. 3. The next day, peel the clementines, slice into rounds and place on a baking tray. Sprinkle them with sugar, then blowtorch until caramelised and leave to cool. Release the cheesecake from the tin and arrange the clementines on top. Will keep for up to three days in the fridge, yummy. Source: www.bbcgoodfood.com
