Hello Readers,
So we made it through January - are you suitably cleansed from the health detox you promised yourself or did you fall off the wagon mid month? I, for the first time ever, am doing really quite well with my resolution to get more active and generally lead a healthier lifestyle and I am enjoying the results that I’m starting to see in the mirror. So for those of you who are trying to do the same, my advice would be to just stick with it as the benefits to your wellbeing will soon override the urge to run to the fridge for that late evening chocolate binge. This month we have an exciting new feature to present to you in the form of our Restaurant Review. For this issue we visited No10. Restaurant at Princes Risborough Golf Club to sample their culinary delights. Mike & I had heard great things about this place and our experience didn’t disappoint. The food was melt in the mouth and extremely great value for money. To read more about this picturesque establishment, turn to page 26. Whilst on the subject of food I feel it is important to highlight Fairtrade Fortnight which takes place this month from 29th February until 13th March. Millions of farmers and workers in developing countries work hard every day to grow the food we take for granted, yet ironically they don’t always earn enough to feed their own families. Fairtrade is about changing this by aiming to secure better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. There are over 4,500 Fairtrade products available in the UK: from coffee, tea and chocolate to beauty products, flowers and gold. One in three bananas bought is Fairtrade, and British consumers choosing Fairtrade sugar sent more than £5 million in Fairtrade premium back to sugar cane smallholders last year. Choosing to buy food with the FAIRTRADE Mark really does make a huge difference to thousands of farmers, workers and their families. So next time you go shopping look for the FAIRTRADE Mark and do your bit to help the hand that feeds us. Until next month, enjoy reading.
Love Emma & Mike xx

MOTORING :in the spotlight... 2015 Vauxhall Corsa VXR By Tim BarnesClay, road test Journalist for Confused.com.
The most up-to-date Corsa VXR from Vauxhall is stimulating to look at and rousing to drive..
T
he beefy stance, the eccentrically fat alloy wheels and the hiphugging sports seats aren’t exactly understated. And, if for some reason you’ve had a ‘forgetful moment’ and need reminding further that you’re not in any ‘ordinary’ Corsa, don’t worry, because the letters ‘V.X.R’ are pretty prominent. So, in terms of aesthetics, the Corsa has done a good job of ‘bigging itself up’ before even going anywhere – but does it deliver on the move? The response to that is a somewhat schizophrenic one: yes, and no. You see, whilst the Corsa VXR does the 0-62mph sprint in just 6.5 seconds – faster than the Fiesta ST, Peugeot 208 GTI and the Renault sport Clio 200, the front wheels sometimes find it hard to command the clout. This means when you hit the gas hard there’s a lot of torquesteer and the steering wheel can almost wrench itself free from your clasp. But this makes the Corsa entertaining – in a demanding sort of way. After all, the 143mph model is a pure-bred from Vauxhall’s hothatch stable, and highly strung beasts need to be kept in check. On the straights, the mini motor with its mighty engine certainly attracts looks, and the deep grumble, building up to a turbo whistle, turns heads. But through the twisty bits is where you will grin like a Cheshire cat. This is because, Vauxhall has worked closely with damper-supplier, Koni, to develop a new technology, known as Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) for the new Corsa VXR. FSD allows damping forces to adapt to the car’s movements, ensuring that body control is maintained when the car is driven fast, but ride quality is optimised at lower speeds. The system is an entirely mechanical solution and does not require any electronic components such as sensors, cables or engine control units. Into the bargain, the car’s ride height has been lowered by 10mm all round. There’s also a new rear axle with new geometry for a modified roll rate. In combination with a new torsion profile rod, this results in improved responsiveness compared with the former model. The Corsa VXR’s spring rates, anti-roll bars, rear-axle bearing bushes are also new or revised. What’s more, for the first time, Vauxhall is offering a two-stage switchable electronic stability programme (ESP) and traction control (TC) with the Corsa VXR. In Competition Mode the traction control is inactive, while the ESP is relaxed to allow less intervention. For track use, the ESP can be fully disabled.
06
@carwriteups
And when it comes to scrubbing off speed – the Corsa VXR has it covered. Vauxhall and Brembo have worked hard to develop a braking system which will bring a very wild car to a swift stop. There’s no doubt about it, this is a white-knuckle car to drive, and one that will get you lots of attention. Perhaps too much, judging from the amount of boy racers determined to ‘take me on’ every time I wanted to nip to the supermarket. Fine; but if I wanted to be noticed by spotty 18 year olds wearing baseball caps back to front then I’d have bought an old Nova GTE with a fake turbo whistler rammed up the tailpipe. No, for me, the Corsa VXR isn’t quite sophisticated enough.

FIX Love your style!
It’s a tough call for men at the moment. Over the last couple of years as male fashion has become more prominent and designer-led ‘slim fit’ has become the norm meaning ‘regular fit’ is hard to find. Cyclists and footballers tend to have bigger legs and if you like to work out in the gym, chest sizes tend to be too small. As for rugby players you are probably struggling to buy clothes that are comfortable at all. Here’s some tips to guide you, whatever your shape or size... SHIRT STATS: It’s all in the fit, the cloth, pattern and collar! For those who have shorter or wider necks the ‘cutaway collar’ or deeper collar is a little less flattering than the ‘tall point’ traditional shaped collar or the high two button Italian collar, which softens the line around the neck and the shoulders. Larger or more contrasting checks will make what’s underneath look well, larger, so great for the slim physique but more tonal and smaller checks and stripes are better for the larger figure.
Hugh and Crye are US based (www.hughandcrye. com) but use a grid for sizing: skinny; slim; athletic or broad and down the y axis: tall, average or short. Their blazers cover all options, too. I particularly like the cotton-mix Seneca which comes in some great colours - olive probably my favourite and will suit most British skin tones.
STYLE TIP: it’s all in the angle! Stripes accentuate their direction, i.e. vertical elongate the figure and adversely horizontal widen. So wear the right stripe for your shape.

This one’s for the guys... Thankfully, there are more and more quality publications, twitter feeds and articles offering excellent advice for the guy who cares - about his wardrobe that is. Men’s fashion is catching up with women’s, and rightly so! Hardly fair for female fashion to dominate the industry any more. So, it’s time for the highlight to be on men for this month’s feature and being the month of romance and love I hope the lovely female readers of Look Local won’t mind. Many women still buy their partner’s clothes, so guys and girls, read on... As always, if you would prefer to get some professional help for styling and/or shopping then please get in touch - vouchers are available, too, for a valentine’s present that lasts a lot longer than hot-house red roses (am I sounding a little cynical!?l) Enjoy the month of love and sharing! with love, Jo xx
SUITS YOU SIR...
J.Crew have created a specific suit - The Crosby - for athletic men and TM Lewin’s ‘John Francomb’ shirt is great for the vshaped torso. Marks & Spencer offer a made to measure tailoring service but for more local and independent expertise try Clements and Church (www.clementsandchurch.co.uk) Little Clarendon Street, Oxford for contemporary individually sized clothing and also Repertoire, Beaconsfield for a large selection of designer clothes in all shapes and sizes.
TROUSER TRENDS Trousers can be a challenge for cyclists and of course rugby and football players, too. Regular fit styles are your best bet with a slightly tapered ankle. American brands tend to offer a wider leg. For Jeans try Levis, GAP and Wrangler and for chinos head towards the regular fit in Gant, Topman or ASOS. com which taper the jeans. WEAR WITH CAUTION:
“Turn-ups, especially big ones, will shorten the leg, especially if they’re a wider leg - just worth bearing in mind!”

WATCH YOUR ACCESSORIES
Complete your look and make a statement about who you are with a stylish watch. The basic rule for watches is that they should compliment not contrast the outfit and be appropriate for the occasion. For the more budget conscious Citizen, Mark Jacobs, Casio or Seiko provide great value for money or for those with a little more to play with, try a modestly priced Omega which is a happy medium.

Why the SAD Face?
It has been fashionable for some years to describe low energy or depression in the winter as ‘suffering from S.A.D. or Seasonal Affective Disorder’. S.A.D. appears to be a general description of mid-winter malaise but in fact the concept does have diagnostic significance and was well understood more than 2000 years ago in Chinese Acupuncture thinking. Could Acupuncture therefore hold the key to beating the ‘Winter Blues’? Here Andy Roscoe, of Thame Therapy Clinic explains more.
In
Acupuncture the vitality of all living organisms is seen in the context of the different energies of each season, amongst other things. In turn each season is related to different organs in the body. For example; • Summer is related to Fire energy, which is encapsulated in the Heart and Small Intestine. •
Winter is related to Water energy, which is held in the Kidney and Bladder.
•
Spring is the Wood energy, which is held in the Liver and Gall Bladder.
•
Autumn is Metal Energy, which is held in the Lungs and Colon.
•
And in the Late Summer (a fifth season between Summer and Autumn), we
have Earth energy which is held in the Stomach and Spleen. To show either an extreme liking or disliking for a particular season is to reveal therefore an imbalance in one or more related organs, which in turn may indicate where treatment needs to be focused to restore health. When we are generally in balance it is possible to feel the beauty and benefits of every season. In the case of people who regularly suffer from S.A.D. in the Winter, it is often indicative of exhausted Kidney energy leading to similar in the Heart as we struggle to keep the internal fires burning in the absence of light and warmth. Acupuncture can really make a difference to your patterns of energy and in particular help you beat the ‘Winter Blues’.

GET THIS YEAR OFF TO A HEALTHY START
with Bowen Therapy!
By Jen Webster, TMJ and Hormone Accredited Bowen Therapist.
With the new year well underway now, many of my clients are recovering from coughs and colds, which have been lingering since the end of last year, the overwhelming aim is to feel better and ‘get fit’. Others are embarking on sports training and have signed up for half and full marathons. I am sharing with you a testimonial received last year. Please read Nicky’s story:
“I
was introduced to Jen 18 months ago when I was suffering with terrible pain due to a trapped nerve in my arm. The GP advised me to take painkillers and ‘come back in 3 months if it still hurt’. The shooting pains running through my arm and hand stopped me from sleeping and I couldn’t bear the thought of waiting for it to fix itself. I went to see Jen without knowing about Bowen Therapy but willing to give it a try. After a consultation with Jen, explaining how it worked, and going through my medical history, she treated me and I immediately felt the pain shifting down and out of my arm so that I was left with an ache in my hand. After the second treatment a week later the pain disappeared completely. As a consequence I slept better and my general feeling of well-being returned. I was a Bowen convert on that alone. I continued to see Jen as I felt so good after the treatment, knowing and feeling that my body was aligned.
Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.
Whilst researching Bowen, I saw that Jen (via her website) had helped one of her clients overcome long term back pain and successfully run in the New York marathon. Having entered several 10K and half marathons previously, I was considering entering a marathon and with Jen’s support I entered my first one in April 2014 at the age of 51. I followed a ‘novice’ marathon-training schedule, which I interspersed with regular visits to Jen to keep me in good shape both physically and mentally. When I had an ache or twinge of any sort Jen would focus on that so it was dealt with immediately. My recovery from long runs was so quick. I was able to run the Stratford-on-Avon marathon in 4 hours 10mins. I saw Jen the day after the race to aid my recovery - after a day or two of stiffness I was completely back to normal This year I decided to enter the London Marathon, in January I went to see Jen to help get my body fit and healthy for training. I had regular appointments booked in advance until the race. My final session was a week before the race. Her treatment helped me feel strong, healthy and completely capable of running the distance. I ran the race in exactly the same time - 4 hours 10 mins and had the most amazing day. I felt comfortable running all 26.2 miles; nothing hurt, I felt great! I saw Jen early the next day, bounding up the stairs to her clinic, proudly wearing my medals! Post race - no pain, no aches, no injuries! Another bonus to my general well-being is that I have not suffered from cold sores since starting Bowen treatment. Meeting Jen has been great for me. I have recommended her to many of my family and friends. They too are benefitting from Bowen. People with long-term pain are especially pleased to have met her.

On
Sunday 20th March, Rennie Grove Hospice Care is encouraging people of all abilities to strap on their cycle helmets and join the charity for its annual sponsored cycle ride through the beautiful scenery of the Chiltern Hills. The popular Chilterns Cycle Challenge offers participants a choice of 10k, 35 mile or 75 mile routes in order to find their perfect pedalling challenge, with all routes to start and finish in Aylesbury town centre. Online registration is now open and the event promises to be a fabulous day for novice and experienced cyclists of all ages. Families are warmly welcomed and there is a special Family Entry offer of £47 for a family of four for the 10k route only. The 10k ride is perfect for a family wanting to enjoy a day out with young children, as it makes use of the Gemstone cycle ways around
Aylesbury, going through Watermead and Fairford Leys. Last year, more than 500 people pedalled through the Chiltern Hills and around the cycle paths, together raising over £30,000 in sponsorship. It is hoped that the 2016 challenge will raise even more to help care for the increasing number of local people with cancer or other life-limiting illness who need Rennie Grove’s services. Gillian Barnett, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at Rennie Grove Hospice Care said: “The Chilterns Cycle Challenge is a well-loved event. Much of its popularity is down to the fact that there’s a choice of three fantastic routes, so there’s something to suit everyone.” For more information on the Chilterns Cycle Challenge or to register, please visit: www.renniegrove.org/chilternscycle

he majestic setting of Oxford Town Hall will once again be the backdrop for the biggest collection of contemporary art to be brought together under one roof as the city prepares to host the third Oxford International Art Fair this year. The 2016 fair, a free to attend event which takes place over the weekend of Friday 26th to Sunday 28th February, is set to be the largest and most successful yet, with more than 150 artists from around the world filling three halls with a huge array of original art. Oxfordshire’s artistic talent will also be more visible than ever, with some 35 local artists from Witney to Thame showing and selling their work. The fair starts in style on the Friday night, 26th February 2016, with a special private view and champagne reception. Part of the proceeds from the £10 VIP tickets will go to Cancer Research and there will also be the chance to raise even more money for good causes by bidding for

Home & Garden The Language of Flowers It’s nearly Valentine’s Day and millions will be rushing out to buy or send flowers. Traditionally this will be red roses of course. Others may choose their purchases on the basis of colour, smell or even price but there’s a whole language and meaning to flowers too which is called Floriography. - Carnations:- Pink carnations mean ‘I’ll never forget you,’ whilst red symbolise admiration and yellow rejection & disappointment, so probably best to avoid those! - Lilies: - Calla Lilies represent beauty and Tiger Lilies wealth so the latter is perhaps a good choice if you are looking to impress. - Daffodils: - show regard.
- Freesias: - demonstrate trust. Of course there are many more wonderful flowers to choose from, so if you really want to be sure of making the right impression, it’s worth asking your florist about their meaning.

Restaurant Review
Nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Chiltern countryside lays PRINCES RISBOROUGH GOLF COURSE (PRGC) which, as well as being located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, boasts gentle undulating slopes across its 9-hole championship course, plush greens, stunning lakes and top quality sanded bunkers. PRGC prides itself on being an integral part of the local community and welcomes members of the public and
members of the Golf Club itself to use the various facilities within its extensive grounds. It has made a name for itself as a destination venue for all year round Golf, and welcomes members along with many green fee paying guests and societies. There is ample free car parking (80 plus spaces) and the facilities are well designed and very comfortable. You can enjoy afternoon tea/all day coffee, cake and snacks, including sandwiches, panini’s and baguettes, throughout the day, 7 days a week at T’s & C’s Café and relaxing drinks throughout the day and evening in the Tapp Inn Bar, a welcoming bar featuring floor to ceiling windows to showcase the spectacular panoramic views across the golf course. For those who are looking for a more formal, sit-down lunch or evening meal you should definitely visit the superb No10 Restaurant (www.no10restaurant.com), a jewel in this fantastic venues crown.
My colleague (Mike) and I were recently invited to sample the delights of their extensive selection of Continental and modern English cuisine. Front of House at No10. is well-known local French Restaurateur Christian Wioland who previously fronted many local eateries when they were at their peak including, The Chequers in Western Turville, The 3 Crowns in Askett and The Stag in Mentmore. It is clear that food is the passion of Christian, Mark and the team as the menu features a choice of mouth watering starters, mains and desserts using different ingredients from all over the world yet sourced locally and lovingly prepared fresh for customers each day. Discerning Customers can choose from the A La Carte Menu where meal options include Starters such as Escargots a la Bourguignon and Chicken Liver Parfait to Main Courses of Roast Saddle of Venison, Fillet of Pork Medallions and Fresh Fish of the Day, to name but a few. Or there is the incredibly tasty Two-Course Set Menu, which at only £13.50 is fantastic value for money as the quality of the food is simply divine. We opted for ‘Deep Fried Whitebait with Aioli Dip’ and ‘Linguini Pasta with a Smoked Salmon and Cream Sauce’ to start followed by Mike’s choice of ‘Fresh Loin of Hake Fillet with Crushed Potatoes, Petite Ratatouille and Pesto’ for his Main Course. I opted for the chef’s recommendation of ‘Traditional French Boeuf Bourguignon with Creamed Potato and seasonal vegetables’ and I am glad I did as the beef was “melt in the mouth” and the sauce was wonderfully rich and flavourful without being over powering. If the choices on the A La Carte or Set-Course Menus aren’t enough to whet your appetite then why not pop along on one of No.10’s special food evenings. They have Thursday Steak Night, Friday Fish Night and a traditional Roast offering on Sundays as well as a number of enjoyable, themed events from Jazz Evenings to Quiz Nights. Exciting forthcoming events to look out for are the Valentine Weekend events (including Vintage Jazz with Kitty), an Auction Evening with BBC Antiques Roadshow regular John Bligh and St Georges Day. Christian puts together dedicated menus for special occasions such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter to supplement the ever present Al a Carte menu. And if the above isn’t enough, the venue offers the perfect setting for private functions, wedding receptions, parties, wakes, anniversary dinners, christenings, business meeting/conferences and other special occasions. It really does have it all, so if you haven’t visited yet, why not! It hits your taste buds rather than your wallet - great value! We would thoroughly recommend it. Recipe
IN HONOUR OF National Yorkshire Pudding Day
From 2008 the first Sunday in February has been designated National Yorkshire Pudding Day! The traditional Yorkshire Pudding first got its name in 1747 according to local legend, when Hannah Glasse wrote a cookery book titled The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Simple. She included a Yorkshire Pudding recipe; but no-one really knows how far back the original recipe goes as some form of batter or dripping pudding, as it was previously named, has been cooked for centuries. Early puddings were flatter than today’s version and were cooked in a tin beneath the meat, which was roasted on a spit over a fire. The pudding was positioned to catch all the drippings from the meat. Dripping was an important part of the diet in those days because the human body actually needs some fat to enable it to absorb certain vitamins, but unlike today sources of fat were more difficult to obtain as meat was expensive so was only cooked on special occasions. Extra drippings from any meat added a welcome and much-needed supplement. The Yorkshire pudding was usually made in a large tray, and was often served with gravy before the main meal as a filler, so less meat was required for the main course. So lets get cooking one!
100g plain flour ½ tsp English mustard pow der Good pinch of salt 1 egg 300ml milk 1 tsp dried thyme 8 plain pork sausages 2 tbsp sunflower oil 2 onions, peeled and sliced 1 tsp soft brown sugar 500ml good quality beef stock
Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes Serves: 4
Method for the batter: 1.
Preheat oven to 220C / gas 7. Sift the flour, salt and mustard powder together into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre or the flour, crack in the egg, then pour in a little milk. Stir with a wooden spoon or a balloon whisk, gradually incorporating some of the flour. Keep adding milk and continue stirring until all the milk and flour has been mixed together and the batter is smooth and lump-free. It should be the consistency of unwhipped double cream. Stir in the thyme.
2.
Place the sausages into a 20 x 30cm roasting tin. Add 1 tbsp of the oil, tossing the sausages in it to thoroughly coat the base of the tin, then roast in the oven for 15 mins.
3.
Remove the hot tray from the oven, then quickly pour in the batter – it will sizzle and bubble a little when it hits the hot fat. Return the tray to the oven. Bake for 40 mins until the batter is cooked, well risen and crispy.

To make this very Britis h classic, you will need;
Method for the gravy: 1.
Cook the onions with the remaining oil gently in a non-stick pan until they are golden brown. Caramelise them by adding the sugar for the final 5 minutes. Add the spoonful of flour, then cook, stirring continuously, for 2 mins.
2.
Gradually pour in the stock, stirring well to make a smooth sauce. Simmer for 4-5 mins to thicken, then season to taste. Cut the toad in the hole into large wedges and serve with the gravy spooned over.

Coffee Break
The Ice Twins
– SK Tremayne
This
month we have a hugely successful thriller which is slowly spreading across social media, largely thanks to its inclusion in the Richard and Judy Book Club. Tremayne successfully plays on the greatest fear of every parent: losing their child. This is exactly what happened to Angus and Sarah Moorcroft. They lived the perfect life in London with their twin daughters, Kirstie and Lydia but a holiday to Sarah’s parents’ in Devon turned into tragedy when Lydia fell from a balcony and died. Or did she? Two girls, physically identical in every way but with very different personalities. Surely if anyone is able to tell them apart it would be their parents? Lydia, Sarah’s thoughtful and quiet daughter is dead and she must rebuild her life and keep going for the sake of Kirstie.
A year after the accident, the family inherit a remote Scottish island and make arrangements to leave London where painful memories of Lydia are around every corner. Then Kirstie turns everything upside down with a simple question. “Why do you keep calling me Kirstie, Mummy? Kirstie is dead. It was Kirstie that died. I’m Lydia.” Could Angus and Sarah really have got it wrong? Or is Kirstie just grieving for her dead twin sister? Is there something special that unites identical twins, even beyond the grave, and causes confusion and guilt at being the one to survive? As the action moves to Scotland the fresh start that they hoped for comes crashing down around them. Just who did die on that day in Devon? And what exactly happened to cause a little girl to fall and lose her life? As the truth is slowly revealed, Sarah struggles to come to terms with the reality as she is slowly pulled into a pit of despair and anguish. The novel starts slowly but builds to a chilling climax that will haunt the reader long after the final paragraph has been digested.

Starting your own business can be a frightening prospect. Once you begin on that road you will not be able to truly relax for a substantial length of time. You know it’s going to require lots of dedicated time and hard work. Should you or shouldn’t you do it? By Mark Tubb. Business Mentor and Co-Director at Princes Risborough Golf Club
There are rarely absolutely right answers and giving perfect advice without knowing precise facts is impossible, but I would say that some points are normally good to consider. In my view, simply feeling stuck in your PAYE job or being sick of the daily commute is not reason enough to start out on your own. Sometimes simply thinking more positively or talking to your Boss honestly and openly gives you the right solution. Maybe changing your PAYE job for another PAYE job is exactly the right solution for you. A new role that pays a performance bonus or taking a share offered in someone else’s business could be perfect. You do need to be the right type of person in the right place mentally and physically and the market needs to be ripe and ready if you are really to succeed in your own business. All that said, if you are not frightened of hard work, putting in the hours and any of the following points sound like you, then running your own business could be the best decision you’ll ever make. •
You’re always thinking - Entrepreneurs can never stop thinking. It’s a blessing and a curse.
•
You’re independent - you see potential and solutions rather than always problems – you will try to solve problems on your own and have the courage to put your solutions into practice.
•
You’re passionate – successful small business owners are truly passionate about what they do
and will do everything possible to make it work. •
You’re motivated - you don’t always need someone else to get you thinking or moving.
•
You’re organised - in the beginning you’ll probably rely on yourself to build and manage the customer base, manage costs and finances etc.
•
You can use common sense as well as your professional skills.
•
You are capable of seeing and believing that there is a gap in the market and feel you can carry out a task better than others who are already doing it or you have found something new to do.
•
You can afford to take risks – if you don’t have to worry about supporting others take advantage of this time in your life - you have the chance to be adventurous.
•
You possess an incredible work ethic - you don’t mind putting in 12-hour or longer days multiple times a week.
So go good luck, enjoy the journey and remember – As you get older it’s the things you didn’t do that you are most likely to regret!
