How are your New Year’s Resolutions going? Fallen off the wagon already....! This year, for the first time in a long time, I seem to be sticking to mine as, thanks to my Forever Living business, to have adopted a much more positive outlook on life over the last 6 months which makes goals and challenges a lot easier to stick to. I feel much more energised since using a lot of our Aloe Vera based products and as such have embarked upon a much healthier lifestyle. It’s a very uplifting feeling and one I love to share with the people I meet. That said, its all about moderation and on the 28th of the month I shall look forward to indulgencing in some sinfully delicious pancakes on Shove Tuesday. The Penfolds will be hosting our annual binge-fest with some yummy new (and sometimes not so yummy) topping creations. In my opinion you still can’t beat the classic Lemon and Sugar however my husband has other ideas as he fills his plate with pretty much every topping you can think of - and I think little Penfold will be following in his footsteps as she seems to develop a sweeter tooth by the day.... Got any unique toppings that you love on your pancakes? Why not post your photos on the Look Local Facebook Page - I’d would love to see your efforts. I also wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all a very lovely Valentine’s Day and hope that you enjoy a romantic evening with your other half and loved ones. If your stuck for ideas on what to do, check out our feature on page 34 or why not head to The Deli at No.5 where they will be offering an array of very lovely hampers and treats - see page 32 for more information. Until next month, enjoy reading...

Your Local Computer Repair & Support The response to our computer repair & support advertising in Look Local Magazine has been overwhelming and we now have lots of new clients on our books, many of whom have signed up to our monthly, remote support cover. Below are just some of our clients’ thoughts on our services: “I am really pleased to have found you having received very poor advice and workmanship from others. As a complete “non-techie” I need someone who listens to my issues and without patronising me will go away and fix things for me plus explaining matters to me in language I can understand. Thank goodness I found you guys at PChelp4U because that’s just what you do for me, well done.” Phil Simmons, Chalgrove “I have been most grateful for the prompt, efficient and helpful way PChelp4U sorted out my serious computer problems. The patience shown by Rob was quite remarkable and I am delighted with the result. I would highly recommend this inexpensive service. All is going well now. Very many thanks to your excellent Company! Best wishes.” Tom Holden, Watlington “I first discovered PChelp4U about a year ago when I was having problems with my lap top. Unfortunately, after trying several things it proved to be irreparable. However, Ben was extremely helpful in finding me a new one which suited my needs & price range perfectly. I was very happy with the service I received, especially having it brought to my home and set up for me. I would definitely use this company again for any PC problems & certainly recommend!” Sonia Max, Thame “I was very pleased with the work that your guy did for us. He was professional, pleasant and courteous: he even solved the problem of 1 of our computers losing a signal all the time. I would certainly recommend your company!” Maureen Samwell, Chinnor “Thank you to PChelp4U for building our brand new website and for the efficient, professional and friendly service received throughout – we are delighted with the result. An excellent local service which we would have no hesitation recommending to others.” Chris & Maria, Thame Show, Thame Read more at www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/testimonials Contact form: www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/chinnor-it-support Email: support@pc-help-4u.co.uk Landline: 01844 292989 or 01491 670014

GET THE LOOK Long live Lapitec – The strongest stone surface out there. By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
For a long time now, granite has been leader of the pack when it comes to low maintenance, long-lasting worktop materials. A hard-wearing, natural stone granite can withstand the rough and tumble of even the busiest family homes.
But it’s time to stand down granite, as there is a newly developed material out there, even stronger, more heat resistant, completely stain and scratch resistant, and even anti-bacterial. Developed and manufactured in Italy, Lapitec is a sintered stone created from 100% highly refined minerals and fired at over 1,200˚C, allowing it’s developers to create a material with a similar chemistry and mineralogy to granite, but with increased durability and maintenance properties. This man-made stone is so strong, it not only works well in kitchens and other interior projects, but as property cladding, patios and even outdoor furniture. In fact, it’s so tough, stone fabricators need special tools to cut and polish it. Up-keeping your Lapitec surface is virtually non-existent as it’s completely scratch resistant, nonabsorbent, mould resistant and carries antibacterial properties. And finding a Lapitec surface that fits your project isn’t hard, as it comes in a broad range of colours, including cool greys, veined whites and plum purples. Seven different textures, from glossy, to flame brushed, as well as three thicknesses – 12mm, 20mm and 30mm. Coulon Stone Ltd are approved Lapitec fabricators, so visit our showroom to look at samples and get a free, no obligation quote for your Lapitec project.

E
very month we will be focussing on particular music groups or events in the area and finding out more about our local musicians. This month we are going to focus on Jon Littler, a fantastic local guitarist, performer and event organiser!
did your interest in Q: How music start?
: We had music on all the time at home A inolderSheffibrother eld when I was growing up. My played Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Emerson Lake and Palmer. Dad was all
Satchmo, Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson. Mum Mozart and Beethoven. I found my niche with the Jam and JJ Cale!
did you first begin performing Q: When live?
: Well apart from some disastrous and A frankly embarrassing school plays, it was a school band, The States! We played friends parties, Hallam Youth Club and school
halls. We thought we were great but I suspect we weren’t!
Q A
: How did the First Thursday Music Club begin?
: We noticed how many people in Thame gave up their time to teach our children football, rugby and swimming. Apart from touchline/poolside support we didn’t do much so we decided to do a gig to raise money for the Thame sports clubs. I found the Stables whilst it was being refurbished by Peach Pubs, I booked it for the gig and on a whim asked if I could have it on every First Thursday on the month. It’ a hobby that has got out of control and over the last 7 years we have put on over 700 acts to a combined audience of over 11,000! It’s a great open mic: We have a superb team In Jim, Phil, Guy, Mark, Diana and Neil who make it happen. Walk up slots 8:009:00, then pre-booked acts and a feature act every month – all for free!
Q A
: Can you tell us about the upcoming Thame Town Music Festival?
: Saturday 8th July 2017 on the High Street! I’m really impressed with Thame, it’s a strong, vibrant community
that creates its own brilliant atmosphere. I have found it comes from a number of people who put in an extraordinary amount of effort to create events and entertainment for the community. We decided to do our bit. The food festival is moving out to the showground so in conjunction with Thame Town Council and the fantastic Music in the Park crew we are holding a free, multigenre, multi venue music festival in Thame . We aim to have Classical, Jazz, Blues, Country, Folk, Rockabilly and singer-songwriters. It should be great. It’s to help the local economy in the high street and to continue our mission to give musicians a chance to perform and the community a chance to see live music. We have some quite big national names coming! It’s not for profit – it’s for the love of music!
Q A Q A
: How can local people get involved?
: The best way is to check the website: www.ThameTownMusicFestival.org! It’s all on there! : How can you be contacted?
: Through the website, at the First Thursday Music Club (Facebook too) or just rugby tackle me in Waitrose where I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time (and money)!

Thame to host a special Antiques and Collectables Valuation Event... III at the with no obligation. High The experts of Lockdales Battle of quality illustrated catalogues
Auctioneers will be providing free valuations to the public on Monday 13th February, 10.30am - 2.30pm at Thame Town Hall. There will be experts providing valuations across the eclectic selection of collectables (see full list below). No appointment is necessary at this event, simply turn up with your items and the valuers will be happy to see you. Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge,
from previous auctions will be given away on a complimentary basis in order for the public to get a better idea of the services available.
These valuation days have proven to be very popular in the past, and we have conducted hundreds of them across the UK. Some of the best items we have auctioned were brought to us at these events, such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, which we later sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. One of the most interesting items we have sold recently was a fragment of pennant flag, believed to have been carried by the army of Richard
Bosworth. This was featured on television, and in newspapers nationwide. Sold for £2800 as a speculative item, the feeling was strong overall that the story behind the flag is true. It was nice to handle a topical item such as this. (Coins of Richard III do very well also!) ZERO BALANCING By Andy Roscoe
Zero Balancing is a bodywork therapy that addresses many common problems, from body aches and pains to long-running, dysfunctional mental habits.
It is a great therapy for people who are not unwell in a
medical sense, but whose bodies and minds are in disarray and always feeling stressed. It is a great antidote for the negative effects of modern living, with too many plates spinning and not enough time to do it all. It is also great for people who need the experience of safe touch, to reconnect with their bodies on a deeper level. Having a sense of intimacy and safe touch which respects boundaries helps us to relax and feel happy deep down. Anyone can benefit from Zero Balancing but in particular I would recommend it in the following areas; •
Stress Reduction - The treatment encourages energy to
•
Body Pain - The treatment addresses pain by improving joint function within the overall enhancement of energy and structure balance in the body.
•
Flexibility and Posture: The treatment can help realign
•
flow smoothly through the body helping to release stressful patterns.
the body and improve posture.
Reparative Touch - The treatment is ideal for those who do not have good experience of being touched as contact during
Zero Balancing touch is one of safety and clarity with clear boundaries between the practitioner and client.
The client remains fully clothed throughout the session and the therapy consists of holds and stretches which invite the client to relax. Some say that it is akin to having yoga done to you. Most people feel calm and refreshed at the end of a session, some even euphoric! A session lasts 45 minutes and after the initial couple of sessions can be used as a ‘stay well’ therapy every 4-8 weeks.

Back Pain and Sciatica... I have lost count of the number of clients who present in my clinic with Back Pain. Every body is different and therefore each experience of pain and lifestyle limitation is experienced in differing ways. The majority of my clients present with chronic pain, often having tried to gain relief from prescriptive medication, physiotherapy, diagnostic scans and referrals for interventional procedures. Untreated pain can interfere with the healing process by affecting the immune system and leading to other undesirable issues. Specifically this discomfort can impede exercise and lifestyle, which risks psychological distress. Pain is inherently subjective and chronic pain tends to be difficult to treat. Whilst the majority of back pain is self limiting, consideration must be given to the physical and psychological implications; Bowen/Neuro Structural (Spinal) Integration Therapy is a treatment of choice and has a well documented record of success in the treatment of Back Pain which is good news for Low Back Pain and Sciatica sufferers.
Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.
New guidelines published by NICE - the National Institute for Clinical Excellence - in November 2016 for the treatment of lower back pain, with and without sciatica concur with the way in which Bowen Therapists treat patients. In brief I am picking up on a few ( recommended )points that are always included in my consultations & treatments;
24
- The use of manual therapy / spinal mobilisation / Soft tissue techniques - Reassurance & encouragement to continue with normal activities - Information about the nature of Low Back Pain and Sciatica - Physical activity / supportive exercise plans / programmes to improve fitness - Psychological approach / Return to work NICE provides national guidance to improve health and social care. Evidence based guidance, advice and information services are available for key groups, including GP’s, local government, healthcare professional and the public. Occasionally, during a treatment, symptoms may ‘ flag up’ underlying back problems. It should be noted however that although my clients are assessed at every treatment it is not my remit to diagnose but to help my client seek immediate medical attention. Tinnitus DO YOU STRUGGLE WITH HEARING NOISES INSIDE YOUR HEAD? If you are one of the nearly 10-15% of people in the country who experiences tinnitus, or are just looking for more information, we would like to invite you to the Aston Hearing open morning on Friday 3rd March in Old Amersham Church Rooms and Tuesday 7th March in Thame Town Hall. We run our open mornings in the first week of every month (Tuesday in Thame, Friday in Amersham). We base each event on a certain hearing issue, and aim to bring people together to answer questions, seek advice and catch up over coffee. Next month the focus is on tinnitus, and our audiologists will be sharing information about the condition and how best to manage it.
Tinnitus is a problem with the auditory system, where people hear sounds such as ringing, buzzing or whistling coming from inside their head rather than an external source. Tinnitus can be caused by a variety of problems such as wax blocking the ear canal, part of the cochlea being damaged or as a side-effect from certain medication. Tinnitus is also linked to hearing loss, with the majority of people with tinnitus having an underlying hearing problem. Everyone experiences tinnitus differently. Some people are able to filter out the sounds and they do not affect their daily lives, in the same way that you often stop noticing a ticking clock
after becoming used to it. But for others, tinnitus can cause stress, anxiety and fatigue, affecting their quality of life. However your tinnitus manifests, we believe that sharing knowledge and experience is the best way to help everyone to find their individual coping strategies. At the open mornings our audiologists will be supported by Nikki, a long-standing client of Aston Hearing who experienced distressing tinnitus during a bout of Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss last year. We hope that Nikki will be able to shed some light on how to deal with tinnitus and provide an empathetic ear for others with the condition.
If you cannot attend the open day in March and would like to book a tinnitus assessment at Aston Hearing Services please contact; Thame: 01844 396057 Amersham: 01494 733840 Email: kate@astonhearing.co.uk Web: www.astonhearing.co.uk

Making your Will Some important decisions Having
taken the decision to make your Will, possibly for the first time, there are a few points your should consider before committing yourself to an appointment with a professional Will Writer. The consultants job is to take your instructions and translate these into your Will, creating a document which accurately reflects your wishes. The Will needs to be understood by your executors and most importantly, The Probate Court, to ensure that it is proved quickly to minimise any problems which may occur causing delays and possible hardship to your loved-ones. There are some important questions which you need to consider before meeting with your consultant. By having many of the answers available it will leave more time to discuss the other important issues which may arise during the consultation.
THE APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTORS
your consultant will be able to advise upon the suitability of such schemes. If you have a child with additional needs, who are likely to require specialist care either at home or in the care of the Local Authority, a trust will be required to ensure adequate funds are available for their future.
PROPERTY How you hold your property will determine how it passes on after your death. As ‘joint tenants’ your share will pass on to the survivor automatically. If you wish to pass your ‘interest’ in the property to your children or others, you should hold your property as ‘tenants in common’. More in-depth information can be discussed with your consultant. Other items to consider will be, specific gifts and funeral wishes. Only use a trainer professional to help you make your Will.
You do not need to appoint other ‘professionals’ to act as an executor or trustee of your estate, unless there is the likelihood of a Trust arising. Professional executors will charge your estate to act, and in many cases, for duties which a layperson could have done. It may be better therefore, to appoint a member of your family, a prime beneficiary or close friend to act. Remember, an executor can also be a beneficiary. If you do need to appoint a professional executor, you could opt for either a solicitor, chartered accountant or a Trust Corporation to act on your behalf. Your consultant will be able to advise on the best option for your circumstances.
APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIANS If you have children (under the age of 18) you will need to appoint guardians. It may be helpful to make at least one guardian a joint executor as they have a right to money from your estate to help towards the upbringing of your child. This amount can be restricted to a certain amount or could be left in a trust fund. Again

Step back in time...
The Aeolian Islands
The Best Islands in the Med continued: We feel everyone should visit at least one Mediterranean destination in their lifetime. This month we are going to focus on the Aeolian Islands, Italy. WHY THE AEOLIAN ISLANDS?
Once the haunt of ancient deities, the beautiful Aeolian Islands off Sicily are now worshipped for their glittering nightlife and smouldering volcanoes. They are a mixed bag of rough and sparkling jewels that attract an equally mixed crowd of Milanese magnates, Sicilian princes, families in search of a quiet holiday, an international fashion crowd and a few Italian northerners in the know. It was here in the 50s, that their bold colours and dramatic light caught the eye of director Roberto Rossellini, who filmed his new lover Ingrid Bergman on Stromboli, in the film of the same name. Stromboli still blows its top regularly, but not much else on the Aeolians has changed. And nowadays, you can party on Panarea and have thalasso treatments on Vulcano.
WHERE TO STAY
Capofaro on Salina is an unusual boutique hotel with a fully functioning vineyard and a lighthouse (the latter, a faro, has given the hotel its name). Its small white buildings are found between the villages of Malfa and Santa Marina, where cliffs that drop to the sea break up the Mediterranean landscape. The 18 rooms are found in the seven cottages that look down across the vineyards to the sea, and the sunset views are astonishing.
WHERE TO EAT
Ristoriante Filippino is located opposite the
28
town hall on Lipari, and has been serving wonderful dishes since 1910. The local Italian fare on the menu includes mouth-watering raviolini of grouper, and the service is pleasant and attentive. Monet paid for his food with a painting and Mussolini’s son-in-law would come here when staying nearby.
THE BEST EXCURSION
Make sure you visit most of the islands so head to Stromboli if you are staying on Salina, or Lipari if you are staying on Vulcano. Ask your concierge for tips about hidden treasures along the coastline too - no one knows the Aeolian Islands as well as the people who grew up there.
WHEN TO VISIT
From October to April, strong winds disrupt ferry services, and many restaurants and shops close. Go in summer, when it is hot and there is a buzz about the islands. The best month temperature-wise is July. For more information on The Aeolian Islands or any other holiday destinations please feel free to call us on 01491 833227 or email us sales@ fullcircletravel.com or come and see us in St Mary’s Street, Wallingford.

In the spotlight... Ford Grand C-Max
MOTORING
Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.
Ford’s Grand C-Max is a car designed to carry up to seven people safely and comfortably. It’s got all the things that make life easier.
Things
such as sliding rear doors that mean the children can get in or out without bashing the doors on walls or other cars. What’s more, the Grand C-Max is roomy inside, with a smart set-up that enables the centre chair in the second row to fold beneath one of the other seats, leaving a space to walk through. I should add, the Grand C-Max Ford has loaned me is the Titanium X 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift. Basically, I’ve got the top of the range version, so it comes with all the bells and whistles. However, whether you get the entry level or the top level Grand C-Max, its function is the same – it’s a car that’ll hold lots of people. Granted, the third row of seats are tucked away for most of the time in the boot floor, and even though they’re really only for kids, they’re still very handy. There’s also a ‘normal’ Ford C-Max, which is a spacious five-seater so don’t feel you have to go for the ‘Grand’ version. So far, we haven’t needed to use the third row, so the two spare seats have remained where they are. This is no bad thing, as without the third tier of seats in operation, the boot stays big. With the seats up, the load area is only good for about three bags of shopping, but with them down, you can knock yourself out filling it up. Not literally, you understand. Standard equipment on the Ford Grand C-Max is generous. It includes Ford’s Quickclear windscreen, sports-style seats, air conditioning and DAB radio. Upgrade to the flagship Titanium X trim and you get a panoramic sunroof, bi-xenon headlights, a partial leather interior, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and keyless start and entry. There’s also Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system, with an easy-to-read eight-inch touchscreen. But the best thing, for me, is that the Grand C-Max is a surprisingly good drive. I say ‘surprising’ because I was a man who used to dislike MPVs because of their

apparent dearth of dynamism. The 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift model is smooth and has lots of low down shove. It works particularly well with the sixspeed automatic transmission. In fact, it doesn’t drive like a bus – it behaves just like a decent 2.0 litre turbo diesel car should. It holds the road well, feeling planted on motorways and through twisty sections of tarmac. It’s also got a cheeky punch to it, with the Titanium X 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift variant able to do 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds. It’s efficient, too, consistently doing mid to late 40s real-world mpg, so I’ve got to say, I’m seriously starting to wish I’d bought this car rather than having it on loan.

Coffee Break
RECONSTRUCTING AMELIA by Kimberly McCreight
We all think we know our children. We think we understand what makes them tick and we like to think that they would turn to us if they were in trouble. But do we really know what is going on in their lives?
Kate certainly thought she knew about her 15-year-old daughter, Amelia. As a young law student Kate found herself pregnant and saw the chance to have the one thing she had always wanted: love. And so, she raised Amelia – with the help of a nanny – qualified as a lawyer and became successful in her career. She appears to have everything. A comfortable home in a desirable part of Brooklyn, and a place at Grace Hall prep school for Amelia: the perfect life. Of course, perfection is fragile, and it doesn’t take much to bring Kate’s world tumbling down. She receives a phone call from the principle at Grace Hall. There has been an incident and Amelia is to be suspended for three days. She requests that Kate comes immediately to collect her from school. Dropping everything is not always an option, and public transport can sometimes let you down. Life can let you down far more than you can dare to imagine. She arrives at Grace Hall too late. Too late to collect her daughter; her only child who is now lying on the concrete, covered by a sheet. What could make a normal, happy 15-year-old jump off a building to her death? Alternating narratives draw us into the lives of Kate and Amelia, reconstructing the events that led to Amelia being on the roof of the school. Did she jump? Or is there something darker going on? Do any of us really know our teenagers? By Willow Coby

Food & Drink
Make yours a ‘cheesy’ Valentines... They say the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach (I’m sure many woman will agree that its the best way to hers too) and it’s well documented that food and love go hand in hand. Romantic meals, sweet treats, fine wine all set the tone for a truly special night in (or out) with your beloved and many tongue tantalising dishes that we experience are in fact wonderful aphrodisiacs. Beside the obvious choices of seafood and chocolate, cheese is in fact embraced in Italian culture as one of the top aphrodisiacs. So with Valentine’s Day just round the corner what better way to treat your loved one than to a hamper full of, quite literally, cheesy treats. The Deli at No.5 have some ready-made hampers containing English Sparkling Wine, locally sourced handmade Chocolates, Heart shaped Godminster Vintage Cheese with Crackers & Chutney, or they can create bespoke hampers to order with your favourites. Joe & Hannah are happy to recommend the best alcoholic beverages to serve with the cheeses to enhance their flavour and bring out each ones distinctive characteristics. Also on offer is the Godminster heart shaped Brie and Cheddar Set, heart shaped Cheese and Fruit Cake Combo Set and individual heart shaped cheese will be on sale too. Somerset made Godminster Cheddar is rich in flavour, both sweet and savoury, with a smooth texture whilst the Brie has a fresh creamy flavour which has been carefully mastered by skilled cheesemakers using milk from Godminster farm. In keeping with the cheese themed Valentine’s offering The Deli at No.5 are introducing ‘Champion of Cheese’ where each fortnight they will be bringing in a ‘Guest Cheese’ for customers to sample and purchase via a loyalty scheme which will provide cheese fanatics the chance to receive future discounts and special offers. And if you’re looking for something a bit different to the usual celebration cake at your forthcoming wedding or special function then why not ask Hannah & Joe about their speciality Cheese Cakes - they really will create a brie-utiful showstopper.

Where did all the love go? Bring back the romance... make
Valentine’s Day extra special this year.
R
omance is dead – it’s become a familiar adage. This is certainly the case for most, according to a recent survey conducted by Sainsbury’s, in which one in ten men believed putting the toilet seat down counted as a ‘thoughtful gesture’. It would seem that the days when men used to write their feelings down in a letter and order expensive bouquets of flowers have been lost to a bygone era of chivalry. Valentine’s Day, whether you believe it to be consumerist tripe or the most romantic day of the year, it does present you with the opportunity for bold romantic gestures.
The Modern Gesture
The last decade has seen romance catapulted into the 21st century with many couples using technology to aid their gestures. From heartfelt statuses on Facebook to personalised music on You Tube, technological advances have provided romance with a much needed upgrade.
Smaller token of affection
Now showing acts of love don’t have to break the bank, in fact sometimes the little things that are a bit out of the ordinary count just as much as the expensive mini-breaks to luxury spas. You could try one of these;
Write a Letter
In our hyper-technical world of Social 34
Media, non-verbal communication has become rather impersonal. Somewhere between texting and instant messenger the letter has died a quiet death. Giving it a revival this Valentines Day provides a thoughtful and traditional way to tell your loved one just how much they mean to you.
Pack a Picnic
Though February weather poses certain restrictions, packing a picnic is a retro way to create some old school romance. Include all your partners favourite foods, a bottle of champagne or prosecco and find a picturesque spot to watch the world go by. If the weather doesn’t want to play ball then pull up on the top of a nice hill or on a cliff by the sea and enjoy your romantic lunch in the car.
Breakfast in Bed
Breakfast in bed is one of life’s great pleasures, so why not start the day in this romantic way. Extra points will be awarded for efforts with presentation and some form of floral arrangement.
Romantic Meal Out
Put the cooking and the washing up in the hands of someone else and treat your loved one to a romantic dinner. You may find that many local restaurants and eating establishments will be offering special themed menus to help make your evening extra special.
