How are your New Year’s Resolutions going? Did you take part in Dry January or have you opted for the popular “I will eat better! I shall loose weight in time for summer!” If so, then give yourself a couple of nights off as we celebrate Shrove Tuesday on the 13th this year, followed by Valentine’s Day (when I am hoping to be wined and dined by Mr Penfold) the next day, both of which are not occasions to be worrying about the waist line. I’m a traditionalist and LOVE the classic lemon & sugar however even I am interested in trying out fresh mango and Greek yoghurt with a splash of Cointreau! No you’re eyes are not deceiving you, I did just suggest putting a dash of liqueur on your pancake - naughty! For more novel topping ideas like this, turn to page 26.

How to stay SAFE Online... Safer Internet Day is now celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology. The day helps to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore how we create a better and safer online community. This year’s slogan is Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you. Here are some steps we can all take to stay safe online: Create complex passwords - Create strong, unique passwords for all your critical accounts. Corporate hacks are commonplace now. One database breach can reveal tens of thousands of user passwords. If you reuse your passwords, a hacker can take the leaked data from one attack and use it to login to your other accounts. The best advice is to use a password manager to help you create and store strong passwords for all of your accounts. Boost your network security - Now that your logins are safer, make sure that your connections are secure. When you are at home or at work a password-protected router will encrypt your data. When you are out and about you might be tempted to use free, public Wi-Fi. But this is often unsecured, which means it’s relatively easy for a hacker to access your device or information. If you access the internet a lot when you are away from home it’s worth investing in a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN is a piece of software that creates a secure connection over the internet, so you can safely connect from anywhere. Use a firewall - This is an electronic barrier that blocks unauthorized access to your computers and devices. It is often included with comprehensive security software. A firewall ensures that all of the devices connected to your network are secured, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices like smart thermostats and webcams. This is important since many IoT devices aren’t equipped with their own security measures, giving hackers a vulnerable point of entry to your entire network. Watch what you click - Many of today’s online threats are based on phishing or social engineering, when you are tricked into revealing personal or sensitive information for fraudulent purposes. Spam emails, phony “free” offers, online quizzes all use these tactics to entice you to click on dangerous links or give up your personal information. Share selectively - Be cautious about what you share, particularly when it comes to your identity information. Information could be used to impersonate you, or guess your passwords and logins. Think mobile! - Mobile devices face new risks: dangerous apps and fraudulent links sent by text message. Don’t respond to messages from strangers, and only download apps from official app stores after reading reviews first. Make sure that your security software is enabled on your mobile, just like your computers and other devices. By Ian McMullan

Menopause getting you down..?
Acupuncture could hold the key Although the menopause is a normal transition period in a women’s life, it can be a time of real difficulty. For some woman it can really impact on daily living as well as relationships. So what can be done to help aid this transition period more smoothly? Acupuncture could hold the answer...
S
By Andy Roscoe www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk
ymptoms of the menopause start occurring such as night sweats, hot flushes, mood swings, disturbed sleep, irritability, tearfulness, problems concentrating, and over tiredness. For some women these are experienced as a minor irritation, like a short-lived physical interruption to everyday life. For others it can feel as if normal life has ended and been replaced by a miserable drudge or even desperation. On top of this all sorts of work and home life issues can arise where nothing runs smoothly and decision making can be a nightmare. Understandably a lot of women seek help and many chose the hormonal/HRT option first. For some though this option doesn’t feel comfortable (and it is now considered a short term medical option because of the risks associated with it), and Acupuncture has become one of the therapies of choice here. Acupuncture studies, whilst not conclusive, do show that Acupuncture is at least as effective if not superior to conventional hormonal treatment. It can also be used alongside hormonal treatment particularly where mental and emotional issues are to the fore. Like any holistic medicine, Acupuncture comes into its own when the mind and body falter together and an integrated solution is required. Experience at the clinic of treating menopausal women with Acupuncture suggests that the heat disturbances
calm substantially and peace of mind is gradually restored. For more information about the subject addressed in this article or to book an Acupunture Treatment at Thame Therapy Clinic please call 01844 215555 and ask to speak to Andy Roscoe or Poppy Bowler.

Health & Fitness for 2018 January and February are times for thinking about your health, embarking on fitness programmes and recovering from Christmas and New Year Festivities. However, Flu / Cold and Sickness bugs have been virulent since early December and we had snow and ice to deal with before and after Christmas, which have made life tricky. It seems that one or other of these issues have affected everyone; the end of 2017 wasn’t great!
Winter really can take its toll on our health and I have seen
a number of clients in my clinic already this year struggling with various ailments brought on by the cold weather. Below is my report on to recent cases:
A FALL ON ICE - COCCYX INJURY: The first case study that I can report on is a lovely lady who comes to see me monthly. I saw her before Christmas as she had fallen on the ice during the snowy period. She damaged her Coccyx, which she reported to be very painful. Her back, shoulders and neck were sore and her posture was poor. The body is very quick to compensate in the event of an injury. I treated her, whilst also addressing other concerns. She left my clinic feeling much more comfortable and booked in for a further appointment, as usual in a month. I saw her a few days ago and during our consultation asked how her coccyx felt after the last session. The response was “Oh, absolutely fine, it got better, I’d forgotten about that!” Another lovely client asked to bring forward her regular treatment session. She had flu before Christmas and had been suffering with labyrinthitis for 3 weeks prior to coming to see me. She also had headaches, a sore throat, balance issues and nausea. Her GP said that she may suffer for months and there was no treatment for this viral condition. I treated her a few days ago and have just received this message “You ARE a miracle worker, markedly better, thank you”.
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE... Bowen can also aid fitness when training for a big event by helping to relax muscles before a race and help relieve muscle strain post-training. A long term client of mine has returned for treatments after a break of several months as she embarks on training for the London Marathon once again. I will see Nicky for several appointments to support her through training pre-marathon and then immediately after the event. Please contact me to find out how Bowen / NST may help you achieve your health and fitness potential and goals. How do you like your pancakes..? February 13th is Shrove Tuesday and I will be
tossing pancakes with the best of them. Usually I am a traditionalist and favour lemon and sugar topping but this year in the interests of research I canvassed my friends for their favourite sweet and savoury pancake fillings, and tried them out. Here are my top five. 1. Nutty chocolate spread and banana - This tasty filling bulks the pancakes out, and makes the batter go further. Perfect if there are lots of people at your pancake supper.
2. Fresh mango and Greek yoghurt with a splash of Cointreau - Very sophisticated and utterly delicious 3. Fruits of the forest with vanilla ice cream and a splash of Amaretto liqueur - This one was a revelation. The liqueur works brilliantly with the fruit, and the hot pancakes with cold ice cream is a sublime combination. 4. Blueberries and maple syrup – This contribution from an American friend goes well with thick or thin pancakes. She tops hers with bacon, but you can leave that out. If you like. 5. Wilted spinach and Ricotta cheese - Sprinkle with a little fresh nutmeg and this makes a very tasty vegetarian supper.
Enjoy.

Love
is in the air...
They say the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach (I’m sure many woman will agree that its the best way to hers too) and it’s well documented that food and love go hand in hand. Romantic meals, sweet treats, fine wine all set the tone for a truly special night in (or out) with your beloved and many tongue tantalising dishes that we experience are in fact wonderful aphrodisiacs. Beside the obvious choices of seafood and chocolate, cheese is in fact embraced in Italian culture as one of the top aphrodisiacs. So with Valentine’s Day just round the corner what better way to treat your loved one than to a hamper full of chocolate heaven or, quite literally, cheesy treats. The Deli at No.5 have some ready-made hampers containing English Sparkling Wine, locally sourced handmade Chocolates or they can create bespoke hampers to order with your favourites. Joe & Hannah are happy to recommend the best alcoholic beverages to serve with the cheeses to enhance their flavour and bring out each ones distinctive characteristics. If its cheese you’re after then the Godminster ‘Heart to Heart’ Set is the perfect choice. It includes a loving combination of delicious Godminster Vintage Organic Cheddar and Heart-Shaped Organic Brie (both 200g), presented in its very own unique gift box. Godminster cheeses have been carefully mastered by skilled cheesemakers using milk from their farm. The Brie has a fresh creamy flavour whilst the Cheddar is rich in flavour, both sweet and savoury, with a smooth texture.

In the spotlight... Hyundai i30 Tourer By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.
MOTORING
@carwrit
eups As we’ve discovered with Kia, the last few years have seen Korean cars become more popular. Indeed, the motoring industry has dished out high praise to the models that have fuelled this boost.
O
ne of these is the Hyundai i30, and in this Tourer body I guess I can call it a sensible small estate car. First off, it’s pretty, isn’t it? This is a stylishly shaped car that doesn’t go too heavy on the aggressive, angular trends that are prevalent in the modern motoring world. Instead, it tries to be confidently attractive, and I like that a lot. The 1.4-litre 140PS turbo petrol engine, on test here, gives a good balance of power and efficiency. It’s a well-judged engine that’s going to be a solid option for people who don’t have a high annual mileage, or just prefer petrol as their power source. Behave well and you might just see 50+mpg from it, but as the engine isn’t overly powerful you might have to work it quite hard if you want to make progress. 62mph takes over nine seconds to reach, which isn’t bad at all, but equally won’t get you overexcited. The biggest plus point to the i30 Tourer is the practicality. There’s just enough room for four adults, and 602-litres of boot space is available for luggage, too. If you don’t need the rear seats, this goes up to an impressive 1,650-litres. Meanwhile, in the front, the driver will find a comfortable cabin with good supportive seating and well laid out controls. It’s obvious from spending a bit of time with the i30 Tourer that Hyundai really thinks about its drivers. What’s more, it’s a cockpit that’s
up there with anything the Japanese manufacturing powerhouses, like Toyota and Nissan, produce. It’s difficult imagining anybody being disappointed with the i30 Tourer. This is 21st Hyundai - a confident, accomplished, quality manufacturer in the middle of a golden age for Korean car production. Perhaps the only thing you can accuse it of is being a bit underpowered, but that’s something that can easily be solved in the future. Hyundai is on a roll.
