Happy New Year to you all. I hope you had a wonder-full (pardon the pun) Christmas and enjoyed all the festivities. Personally, I love January as it presents us with an opportunity to start over, to refresh and rejuvenate and to make promises & resolutions to ourselves to change our lives for the better. So now all the mince pies have been consumed and the festive cocktails guzzled its time to start taking care of yourself once again because if you’re anything like me I’ve definitely eaten my body weight in delicious treats throughout December. I now feel sluggish and plump around the edges and I’m in desperate need of a detox - something I’m very much looking forward to. Never fear as we have a number of Fitness and Wellbeing articles and adverts in this edition to help you all get back onto a healthy path once more. If you’re looking to flush out all the nasty toxins and cleanse your body before starting a new exercise regime then look no further than moi - I’m starting Forever Living’s BRAND NEW weight management programme - the F15 - with a number of ladies and gents from my team as well as customers who are looking to start the new year as they mean to go on, with a full body transformation. So if this is something that interests you, please do give me a call for more information - I’d love for you to join us. We also have an insightful article on Page 24 about a very interesting nonsurgical body sculpting procedure known as Fat Freezing (or Body Contouring). The New Year also means it’s time to start filling up a new diary with exciting activities for the year ahead. If your dreaming of holidays in far flung destinations then turn to page 31 where Full Circle Travel provide the low down on Cruising hotspots. And if you’re a local business and looking to promote yourself this year to our 21,000+ readers then check out our website or contact me for rates. Until next month, enjoy reading...

GET THE LOOK How to bring this seasons latest trend ‘Hygge’into your home. By Rachel Blake, Coulon Stone Ltd
The interiors world is awash with the Danish word ‘hygge’, but what does it mean? Hygge, (pronounced ‘hooga’), translates roughly to ‘cosiness’.
In your home, hygge is all about simple pleasures, using natural materials and creating a welcoming, warm atmosphere in which to bring people together. And nothing says hygge more than the pure naturalness, warm tones and textures, and the maintenance simplicity of natural stone. Granite is perfect for a hygge style kitchen as it’s scratch, stain and burn resistant, and easy to clean, so you can spend less time worrying about your worktop, and more time with friends and family. Made over millions of years the natural colours and textures found in granite add warmth and depth to your worktops. In your living room, hygge captures thoughts of lounging in snugly jumpers, in front of an open fire, with people you love, and this is where natural stone comes into its own. Popular material choices for fireplaces, such as Bath Stone, Portland Stone, York Stone, Limestone and Marble all come in warm tones and textures, and are easily maintained. So to truly capture the hygge spirit bake some cookies, light some candles, and bask in the warm glow of your natural stone fireplace! For inspiration visit our website or showroom, in Stokenchurch, where you can look through our stones and take samples home with you. Or contact us for a FREE quote.

Food & Drink
Celebrating Great British Produce with a Great British Lifestyle in deli-cious fashion... Whilst out doing some Christmas shopping back in December I found myself perusing the abundant selection of quality British produce adorning the shelves of one of Thame’s newest establishments, The Deli at No.5. This quaint independent delicatessen, opened by the Lady Mayor of Thame, back in October can be found at 5a Buttermarket on the cobbled street that leads to the Town Hall and it really is an artisan food and drink lovers’ paradise. Owned by food enthusiasts, Joe Bastin and Hannah Leah Jones, the Deli is a creation of a vision the young couple had after visiting a quirky little shop selling food, clothes and home ware, when holidaying in Ibiza. Upon returning, the self confessed food lovers, whose previous professional backgrounds are a far cry from what they are doing now with Hannah once working in the film industry and Joe a former occupational therapist for people suffering brain injuries, set about turning their dream into a reality. To ensure they could bring customers the ultimate in quality food produce and home ware, Joe and Hannah frequented a number of local farmers markets and food shows across the country resulting in them forming fantastic business relationships with small, local producers which is an ethos they are passionate about continuing well in to the future. And from this, a homely and quintessentially British Delicatessen has been born bringing together carefully selected chutneys, cured meats and fine cheese as well as handmade wooden, textile and pottery home ware made by British artists. The couple also pride themselves on their well-stocked specialist alcohol selection (most of which won’t be found in the supermarket or off-license) including beer from the local brewery in Thame, which they are more than confident in recommending how best to serve and with what meal accompaniment. Having now been in business for 3 months, and recently winning the prestigious accolade of ‘Best Christmas Window Display’ at Small Business Saturday on 3rd December, an event which looks to highlight small business success and encourage consumers to ‘shop local’, Hannah and Joe have big plans for 2017 with a number of special events coming up – watch this space – that can only further enhance the buzzing foodie hub that Thame is fast becoming renowned for.

NOW THE FESTIVE SEASON IS OVER . . .
January can be a busy time for dog trainers - and, sadly, for animal rescue centres. Often owners see new or ‘worse’ behaviour in their dogs. What has gone wrong? What’s the matter with the dog? “It never used to be like this – if it carries on, we’ll have to get rid of it!” Here, Roselle Collins from Thame based, Dog Training company, Out of the Doghouse explains more about why your furry friend could be expressing abnormally, erratic behaviour:
The “festive season” is over; Christmas and New Year celebrations
have come and gone. Many people are glad to return to “normal” because the festive season brings stress and, even for those who enjoy it, hard work and raised blood pressure! The children are over-excited (sometimes the adults as well!). People are coming and going; there are rooms to get ready for visitors, decorations to put up, meals to be prepared and consumed, travelling to organise, people to keep happy, drinks to be drunk, presents to be wrapped and unwrapped – organised, or disorganised, chaos! Perhaps for some, the festive season is less than happy – people trying to get on when they’d rather be doing something else. Tempers become frayed, stress levels rise.
So what are our dogs to make of all this? Certainly their natural instinct does not prepare them for festive celebrations! All this unusual activity is at best confusing. However, their natural instinct gives them an ability which far outweighs our own when it comes to sensitivity to things like blood pressure, emotions and stress levels. How many people will tell you that their dog always knows when they are upset because it comes to them to comfort them? Why is that we can use dogs to detect cancer or the imminent onset of an epileptic fit? We do not need to tell our dogs what to look for; they know already. What we can’t tell them is the cause. So telling your dog that you are upset by Auntie Mary’s behaviour or that the dog must not worry as all this excitement and abnormal behaviour will be over in a few days, won’t make any difference to your dog’s understanding. It lives in the moment – it judges by what it sees, what it hears, what it feels – and it can easily become stressed. Dogs like calm. Yes, they love to play and they love using their brains and senses - and they are always ready for action - but in
between they like calm, a sense of rest and safety. For many dogs, therefore, Christmas and the New Year change everything that they are used to and often their anxiety shows itself after the events in different behavioural patterns. So if your dog has become more excitable, barks more, gets reactive when out on walks, seems more worried or withdrawn, or displays any new behaviour, it is telling you it needs your help. Your dog is a living, feeling creature – just like you are – and something is wrong. Maybe you love your dog and want to make it happy – but you just don’t know what to do. Don’t feel a failure! Many of us haven’t known what to do – but we can all learn and we can all help our dogs. For advice contact Roselle T: 07989 947316 W: outofthedoghouse.co.uk

NEWS in&our EVENTS region Thame Wows Judges but Hebden Bridge Wins Most Votes … while Thame’s Chris Hurdman is Runner-up in Market Champion Awards.
Thame
wowed the judges as a finalist at the prestigious awards ceremony in the 2016 Great British High Street Competition, held at Lancaster House, St James’s, London SW1 in December. After gaining a Rising Star in last year’s awards, Thame’s star shines even more brightly as a small market town finalist this time round. The first prize in the small market towns category went to Hebden Bridge. However, Thame’s entry was highly praised by the judges for collaboration between the town council, businesses and the community. Thame was also praised for its innovative use of the prize money from last year’s Rising Star award, promoting the town’s Midsomer Murders connection to attract visitors. Thame’s MP, John Howell, said, ‘I hope you will be pleased with getting to the final - a great achievement. I am sure all the fantastic work will not go unrewarded in terms of value added to the town and community. One of the things I took from the day when the judges visited was the huge sense of working together that existed amongst you all. This can’t be quantified but makes the whole greater than the sum of the parts. I am sure this will reap its own reward.’
Chris Hurdman with the GBHS Finalist Certificate
Chris Hurdman in Trio of Finalists Thame Market Trader, Chris Hurdman, was one of a trio of finalists in the Retail Market Champion awards ceremony. The Great British High Street judges awarded Nicola Martin, Tameside Markets, with the first prize, while Beverley Milner-Simonds of Burnhamon-Sea was Chris’s fellow runner-up. Chris spoke about the ‘great honour’ he felt to be a national finalist, and said afterwards. ‘I was of course absolutely gutted to not have won the Market Champion award. I have to take solace from being nominated by the people of Thame and being the only market trader at the awards. It was a great honour to represent market trading and I will carry on working with the community to help keep Thame’s market and high street amongst the finest in the country.’

Coffee Break
North Child by Edith Pattou
This Young Adult novel is published by Usborne Books. Based
on the Norwegian fairy tale ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’ this sweeping fantasy story is set in the snow-covered lands of Scandinavia. Legend has it that children born facing north are destined to travel far from home and die, crushed under ice and snow. When Eugenia’s eighth and youngest child is born her belief in superstition leads her to fear for her daughter’s future. She lies about the circumstances of Rose’s birth but it would seem that fate cannot be deceived by a lie. As Rose grows up she feels out of place in the family and longs to travel, with a desire for adventure. Her unease, combined with a wanderlust means that when a white bear appears and offers her family a way out of poverty and ill-health if she will come away with him to a land far away in the north, she readily accepts.
Here she meets a mysterious stranger in a castle hidden in a mountain. Who is he and why does he only appear at night? Faced with challenges she discovers her purpose in life in a tale of love, betrayal, and adventure. This rich story will appeal to readers from the age of 10 upwards and is a great introduction to epic fantasy. By Willow Coby

: My musical influences are an eclectic mix. In my teens I was very impressed by Joan Baez & her wonderful voice, & by Bob Dylan’s song writing. I love 1960’s music & particularly the song writing of Lennon & McCartney. Current artistes who influence me are Passenger, Emeli Sande, Sam Smith & Adele. The music I sing & compose reflects these influences. : Tell us about the first band you joined?

Eliminate stubborn fat pockets
with Body Contouring
When you hear the word ‘contouring’ it conjures up images of perfectly applied make-up on a beautifully chiselled looking face. So what, if I told you that you can in fact contour your whole body, to help shift those little pockets of fat that seem resistant to diet and exercise programs without the use of make-up or painful cosmetic surgery! Becci Sutcliffe, the owner of The Vanity Project, a new Body Contouring service now available at The White House in Thame, explains more about this non-invasive treatment and shares with us some impressive results. Body Contouring is a nonsurgical fat reduction procedure that uses three types of devices, designed to diminish stubborn areas of unwanted body fat to achieve a trimmer appearance without having to undergo surgery. All allow outpatient treatment resulting in efficient and consistent fat reduction as well as enhanced body contour. The three procedures are as follows;
Radio Frequency is a deep acting treatment ideal for improving
loose skin after weight loss, pregnancy or simply as an anti-ageing alternative treatment. It will firm smooth and tighten the skin giving a natural looking result. You will feel and notice an effect after just one treatment with continued results throughout a 4 to 8 treatment program.
Ultrasonic Cavitation
is a safe, fast, pain-free way to permanently remove localised areas of body fat and cellulite. Ultrasound Cavitation breaks down and destroys the fat cell walls and ‘melts’ the fat within, the effect achieved is a smooth, surface texture. Once the fat cells are destroyed, the fat is discharged between the cells where they are turned into protein and then changed to free fatty acids and glycerol, which is then removed from the body via the body’s natural lymphatic system. If you are a bit overweight but your weight has remained stable for some time, or you are on a weight loss program, this treatment will speed up the fat loss process and reshape the body contour. Most clients will see the effects immediately after the treatment.
Cryolipolysis,
also known as Fat Freezing, is a procedure which selectively targets and removes localised fat deposits. It is the cooling of subcutaneous fat cells, which induces lipolysis – the breaking down of the fat cells, without damaging any of the surrounding tissues or skin. The fat cells are crystalised and over a period of 2-4 months are slowly removed via the body’s natural metabolic (lymphatic) system. The treatment is carried out using cryo-cups, which are used to suck in, and cool stubborn fat-bearing areas. The procedure is carried out gradually without causing any harm to the surrounding tissues. It is used to target troublesome areas of fat eg: abdominal pouches for a more toned look but should be used in sync with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

How to turn a mid-life into By Anna Storey, Psychotherapist at Thame Therapy Clinic.
Midlife crisis is a subject of many jokes – a balding man in a red sports car comes to mind. Yet it would not seem funny if we looked at the statistics. Research consistently indicates that people in their 40s and 50s are the least happy age group around. So if you are a forty or fifty something and are feeling unhappy, irritable, “stuck”, depressed – you are not alone.
A large proportion of my clients belong to this age group and the range of problems they bring could be summed up as a “midlife crisis”. Couples struggling to accept the emotional impact of the affair; stressed executives disillusioned in their glittering careers; parents reassessing their marriage after children have left home – these are just a few examples. So what are the signs or symptoms that you might be going through this stage? In his book on the subject, Psychotherapist Andrew G. Marshall suggests the list of possible behaviors: • • • • • • •
Discontentment or boredom with people or activities that provided fulfillment beforehand
Feeling restless and wanting to do something completely different with one’s life Anxiety about the future
Questioning decisions made years earlier Irritability, unexpected anger Persistent sadness
Increased use of alcohol, drugs, food or
• • •
other compulsions
Greatly decreased or increased sexual desire
Sexual affairs, especially with someone younger
For women in particular, worrying about not having had children or whether they want them in the future
So what is to be done, if you have suddenly found yourself in this situation, feeling “stuck”, having achieved a lot, but unable to enjoy your success? In our 20s and 30s we are programmed to achieve success and build careers (often not in the field we would have chosen ourselves). There is societal pressure to get married, settle down and have children. There are certain milestones to achieve. We are so busy that there is often no time for introspection or questioning if what we are doing is actually what we want to do.Your 40s and 50s is the time to do just that – pause and think. Interestingly, the Chinese word for “crisis” is made up of two hieroglyphs: danger and opportunity. So it is up to you what you will make of it.

Ménière’s Disease A condition of the Inner Ear and Vestibular System
Ménière’s disease is named after a French Physician Prosper Ménière who in 1800’s worked at a deaf/mute institute in France and studied the condition, that they finally put his name to. Ménière’s is a condition of the inner ear affecting balance and hearing. It is thought to be caused by unusually large amounts of a fluid called endolymph creating a build up of pressure in the inner ear. This pressure can cause the inner ear Treatments control symptoms rather than curing the condition. Having Ménière’s can affect your mental health and have a impact on to send abnormal messages to the your whole family. The balance aspect of the condition can prevent brain resulting in dizziness, vomiting you from driving and involve days when you cannot leave your bed. and dulled hearing. It is often described by sufferers as a feeling of ‘fullness in the ear’, and can lead on to dramatic unpredictable, devastating attacks of severe vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Longer term effects of the condition can include permanent hearing loss and tinnitus and on-going balance problems. Exact causes of the condition are unknown but there are potential links to circulation problems, viral infections, allergies, the immune system, migraines or genetic factors.
How to cope day-to-day: Get up slowly giving senses time to adjust to being upright. Take time out. Regular exercise including yoga and pilates to maintain flexibility and strength which can help balance and aid relaxation. Wearing sunglasses can relieve eye strain. Carry medication on you at all times. Listen to relaxation tapes at night. Use night lights to avoid harsh electric light. Use hearing aids that have a remote control and different programmes to help cope with fluctuating hearing loss. Look after your mental health - talk to people, you are not on your own.
Over our 30 years of practice we meet many people living with Ménière’s disease. We have helped them practically with hearing technology that allows them to adjust the levels to suit different stages of the condition. On a less practical level we feel some of the best help we can offer is social and mental support. We have been working together with Amersham Tinnitus & Ménière’s society to provide an outlet for people to meet and share experiences in a safe, guided place. Out next events are:Tuesday 7th February 10.00am - 12pm in Thame Town Hall and Friday 10th February 10am -12pm at Flint Barn Court, Old Amersham. In the spotlight... 2017 Suzuki Ignis
MOTORING
Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.
If you’re a retro lover and small cars are your thing, then you’ll like the new Suzuki Ignis.
T
he car’s design pays homage to the tiny Suzuki Whizzkid. It has slats just behind its rear doors - and, if you’re over 40, you’ll just about remember the same look on the Whizzkid when it graced our roads in the latter part of the 70s. Even as a seven-year-old, I thought the car was small. The all-new Ignis is petite, too, but not in a sweet, girly way. It’s more evil Hillman Imp than cutesy Fiat 500. The Ignis has got the same power units under its bonnet as the recently launched Suzuki Baleno. It is propelled via a 1.2-litre petrol unit or via hybrid power. It is also available in front or all-wheel-drive, and comes with either a manual or automatic gearbox. A BoosterJet turbo engine is also going to be ushered in during 2017. In spite of its all-wheel-drive styling, the Ignis is only 3693mm long, yet it does seem roomy enough inside. It’s truly comfortable in the rear for two adults, but the front has the best leg and headroom. Actually, Suzuki has been clever with the way it has packaged the back seats. They can be adjusted so that you can increase either load space or legroom. Back in the front, the dashboard is cleanly laid out, so all the switchgear falls easily to hand, and there’s a large ‘in-your-face’ speedo. Additionally, as with most modern cars now, there’s a touchscreen with connectivity for smartphones. I tested the Ignis in 1.2 SZ5 SHVS 4x4 guise. This hybrid version makes use of a belt-driven starter and generator, as well as a second lithium ion battery. This boosts the car’s petrol engine during acceleration. Producing only 90PS, this variant of the Suzuki is no sports car, but, because it’s so minuscule, everything feels faster than it really is. Zero to 62mph arrives in 11.5 seconds, and the top speed is only 103mph. But there’s a lot of fun to be had if you work the Ignis’ five speed ‘box hard. The new Suzuki Ignis’ steering is a tad vague and the car does roll in corners, but that just adds to the entertainment factor. Hit a pothole, and things become even crazier as the rear bounces up and down like a 1970s’ space hopper. Bizarrely enough, none of this makes you dislike the car at all. And that’s because the 2017 Suzuki Ignis has bags of
@carwriteups
character – something many motors lack today. The Ignis is agile, and with four-wheeldrive added, the Japanese car turns very mountain-goat-like, clambering up inclines and muddy trails like said beast in season. There’s even hill descent control, to keep you from overeagerly scrambling back to earth. The Ignis’ talent for traction transfers to the tarmac, too, with oodles of grip in corners. With an average fuel consumption of 60.1mpg, and CO2 emissions of only 106g/km the 4x4 hybrid version of the Ignis will be cheap to run. The basic Ignis goes on sale this coming spring priced from just £9,999, while the 1.2 SZ5 SHVS 4x4, reviewed here, will set you back £13,999.
