For me personally, last year was an incredibly busy and exciting year as my husband and I bought our first family home together, my little girl started school and we finished the year off as a family of four when we welcomed our beautiful baby boy, Albert, into the world. Professionally, I gained new clients and worked on growing the print & design side of my business.

New Year, new statement stone worktop.
By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
W
ith the New Year comes a new start, and an opportunity to make some changes. This could include some interior updates, and where better to start than the heart of your home, the kitchen. But its 2018, so make it a big year and start that big year by doing something different, stepping out of your comfort zone with a statement stone worktop. Here’s three magnificent materials which will transform your kitchen from drab to fab this New Year.
1. Terrazzo - A style of composite quartz, terrazzo is made from chunks of marble, granite, quartz and glass, held together with resin. Specially designed for kitchen worktops and ideal for a busy home, it’s not easily stained, scratched or burnt. Designs range from densely populated, small pieces, to large, sparse lumps, in darks, lights and neutrals. However, for a truly trendy look in 2018, go for bright colours like corals and emeralds or pastel pinks and purples.
2. Exotic granites - Most typically granites come in solid dark colours, or mottled blues, browns and greys. And whilst some of these more commonly chosen stones are beautiful, and their durability makes them ideal for a kitchen worktop, there are some lesser chosen stones that offer the same durability but with more bang for your buck. Some people may shy away from choosing a statement granite like Lemurian Blue, or Azul King, because their exotic designs can be harder to style, but maybe 2018 is the year to take a chance and add some colour to your cave. Seek advice from your supplier, or take inspiration from websites like Houzz or Pinterest to help you style your statement stone. 3. A thick, rustic effect
- Granite worktops don’t have to slim and shiny, a chunky, natural look is just as much a possibility. Textured finishes can be called all sorts of things, including satinato, anticatio, flame brushed or hand-hewn, depending on the supplier, so be sure to choose your desired finish in person to avoid any confusion. The thick edge is especially stylish at the moment, and unlikely to budge from décor magazines for years to come.
For more information on how to get your statement stone worktop from Coulon Stone email us on info@coulonstone.com, call us on 01494 484333 or visit our showroom in Stokenchurch.

MOTORING
Fitted with a 3.0 litre V6 engine, the latest Audi A4 Avant becomes almost too powerful for its own good.

@carwriteups
on’t get me wrong; the diesel lump is a real pearl, but there’s no way it returns the claimed 57.6mpg when riding on 19-inch wheels. I found the car thirsty, and mid-30s was more realistic for me when driving two-up, with no luggage, on a mix of motorways, A and B-roads.
What’s more, indiscernible wind and road noise make the A4 the quietest cruiser in its class – by a long chalk. The ride is wonderful, and easily a match for BMW’s 3-series. The same goes for the car’s bob-on handling.
The A4 estate model that Audi sent me came in top S line trim, and starts at £38,895, but with a few thousand pounds of options thrown at it, my test car was waving a £46,395 price-tag.
This practical five-up estate comes with Audi’s standard seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox. It changes slickly, keeping the revs low except when Dynamic mode is selected.
You get a lot of kit for the cash, though and Audi is well-known for its upmarket, understated interiors that are both perfectly finished and intuitive.
A moderate push of your right foot is all that’s required to build momentum hastily; stamp down hard, though and you’ll get to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds.

World Record attempt by local Dance Group, Performanze, raises money for charity…
If you were passing a dance studio in hundreds of different locations across the UK on Sunday 19 November at 1pm, you might have been wondering what that glorious tapping noise was – there certainly wasn’t a quiet moment anywhere as over 7,500 dancers went through the same routine at the same time in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record. Performanze had 39 dancers following a routine to the tune of ‘Faith’ (soundtrack from the film ‘Sing’). Dancers of all ages learned the routine, and after a couple of run-throughs the challenge was on. Our dancers put on a wonderful performance for their watching families, and made £390 towards a grand total of £38,600 raised by dancers around the country. The final count this year was a total of 7,518 dancers performing the same routine at the same time – just 78 people short of breaking last year’s record, but a great incentive to try again next year and smash it! £38,600 is a superb total and will go a long way to helping Children in Need, so thank you for your support for such a wonderful and worthwhile charity, and another heart-warming event for the Performanze dancers. At Performanze we pride ourselves in offering fantastic opportunities to all our children through exams, shows, local fetes, London and International events, and much, much more. We create dances aimed at showcasing all the ages and abilities talents, with children developing physically, emotionally and cognitively as rounded dancers and people, all in a loving family atmosphere. Performanze run professional dance classes on various days and at a range of local venues for everyone from age 2+. For a free trial, or for further information, call us today on 07745 099472, or email us at performanze@live.co.uk.

HOW DO I MAKE MY NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS MEANINGFUL? By Andy Roscoe
So here we are again, January 1st 2018, and it only seems like yesterday that 2017 began! It’s probably cold and dark and you might feel a bit ragged for obvious reasons. Is there any point in starting anything..?
A
ctually yes. What’s needed now is a plan to implement those hazy ideas you had recently to do things differently this year. Some of those ideas could start to become reality if you have a look what Thame Therapy Clinic offers below. •
Problems with pain - If your body physically hurts and
•
Life getting you down - If you feel your head is not
•
A bit of you time: You might just need general pampering
you’ve been putting up with pain and aches for too long, then you could consider some hands-on help such as osteopathy, physiotherapy, massage, acupuncture, deep fascia massage, reflexology, or lymphatic drainage. in the right place and life is far too difficult to manage, then you might want to talk to one of our counsellors, or perhaps try a combination of counselling and energy rebalancing such as offered by acupuncture, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, reflexology, massage and zero balancing.
to get yourself in the right place, and for this we offer therapies such as aromatherapy, Indian head massage, Thai massage, hot stones massage, cosmetic facial acupuncture and zero balancing.
•
Help for your children - If your babies, children
or teenagers are struggling then you could try homeopathy, cranial osteopathy, acupressure/ acupuncture, neuro developmental therapy, or speech and language therapy.
You can read more about all of these therapies on our website. Or if you want to speak to someone for general guidance ring the clinic and ask for Andy Roscoe or Kieren Spencer. The journey begins with one small step!

New Year, New You... “Firstly I would like to wish all Look Local readers a very happy and healthy New Year”
The beginning of a new year is a time for resolutions and a wish to GET FIT, IMPROVE FITNESS LEVELS or simply a desire to feel BETTER. Find out this year how Bowen Therapy may help you achieve some of your lifestyle wishes. Bowen Therapy/Neurostructural Integrative Technique (NST) is a dynamic, hands - on, non - invasive remedial therapy. This treatment is an alternative medical system that utilises gentle, but powerful soft tissue activations that aid the body in self-healing mechanisms. There is no manipulation, no awkward bending, twisting or repositioning of the client. The experience of a treatment is subtle and relaxing. Clients report a decrease in pain, improvement of function, recovery of energy and an improved feeling of well being Bowen / NST is suitable for clients of all ages - from tiny babies through to those with chronic conditions and the elderly.
News from 2017: This year has seen many reports regarding the reduction of invasive surgery, injections, scans and medication for back, knee and shoulder problems. NICE guidelines are now recommending that the first line of action for medics is to advise patients on lifestyle changes to help improve certain conditions, including soft tissue therapy, return to work, exercise and diet. “Back pain resolved”: From Lynda, who came to see me having ‘put up with lower back pain for over 6 months’ She sent me a message the day after her treatment “I can’t believe it, it’s a miracle, after months of suffering I had forgotten what it’s like to not be in pain!” Lynda came back for a second session. She has continued with work and exercise, and reported that her back has im-proved each day. She will come for a maintenance session in 10 days to help her ‘cope’ with the festive season! “Frazzled and Worn Out”: From Claire: “It’s that time of the year when we are all feeling a bit frazzled and worn out. I have just had Bowen Therapy with the wonderful Jen Webster at The White House, Thame, to help boost my energy levels and get my body back on track. I highly recommend trying a session” With all my clients my aim is to work with the presenting issues to try and alleviate DIS-EASE in the body, once resolved many clients come back regular for maintenance sessions and are able to increase their levels of physical activity Jen Webster Bowen | Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com T: 07768 188664

What is Burns Night..? Robert Burns was a Scottish bard, born in 1759 who wrote many poems and lyrics during his life. His most famous work is probably Auld Lang Syne, sang at New Year and which translates as ‘times long past’. Burns is one of Scotland’s most important cultural icons as many of his works addressed the political and civil issues of the time.
Robert Burns’ friends and acquaintances held the first Burns supper on July 21, the anniversary of his death, in the late 1700s. This date was later changed to January 25th, which marks his birthday. Burns suppers gradually became a tradition and are now held by people and organizations with Scottish origins worldwide. At Burns Night events, many men and women wear kilts or other clothes made from their family tartan. At the centre of the supper is the haggis, which brought to the table to the tune of bagpipes. For the uninitiated haggis is a savoury pudding containing ‘sheep’s pluck’ (the heart, liver, and lungs of the animal) which are minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, stock and salt, then encased in the animal’s stomach - though artificial casings are more commonly used now. It can be baked or boiled and although it sounds quite revolting is surprisingly delicious, at least to this author! It’s served with a whisky sauce and some neeps and tatties - a mixture of swede and potato which works beautifully with the rough, oaty haggis. Cranachan is the traditional desert of cream, raspberries and oatmeal. It should all be washed down with a good whisky. Have a great Burns night. Gun cuireadh do chupa thairis le slainte agus sonas. It’s GIN O’Cl ck
Gin has seen some what of a comeback over the last couple of years! Gone are the days when a bog standard house gin will be served to you at the bar. As Gin lovers themselves, The Deli at No.5 we are proud to be able to offer customers a plethora of UK sourced (many local to Thame) tipples to choose from.
