I do LOVE Christmas so much however I also find January quite refreshing, albeit a bit dull at times due to gloomy weather, as it provides you with the chance to de-clutter and start a fresh. I don’t know about you, but I always feel really inspired and motivated during the first couple of weeks of January and after a rough end to 2018 for Team Penfold I plan on taking full advantage of my current positive mentality and crack on with putting the plans that have been sitting in my over-cluttered head for far too long, into action! Do you feel the same? If so our new Fitness Feature, which will be running for the first half of this year, could be a good place for you to start! Jemma Stevens launched her Online Nutrition and Coaching business after she gave her lifestyle a total overhaul resulting in her losing a very impressive 9 stone. Read more about her inspiring weight loss journey and find out more about Flawsome Jem on page 20. Or if you’re more interesting in investing your new found energy into your home, our Get The Look Feature on page 09 should help get your creative juices flowing. And if you’re starting a new business venture this year or you already have a company that you’re aiming to grow throughout 2019 then please do get in touch for further information on advertising rates and editorial opportunities within Look Local Magazine. And until next month, enjoy reading...

New Honda CR-V Hybrid Review
@carwriteups Diesel seems to be dying, and that’s a shame for a lot of people. There are a lot of good diesel-driven cars out there, and the scrapyard is where government leaders would like to see them. Therefore, it seems odd that automakers are still churning them out. Indeed, many of the car launches I go on include oil-burners.
However, that’s not the case with Honda. The Japanese
firm has committed itself to an electrified future and claims that by 2025 two-thirds of its European transactions could encompass electrified vehicles (EVs). The brand aims to usher in a full urban EV later next year, but its first step towards this new age is a hybrid version of the CR-V. The model is in its fifth-generation, and the hybrid powertrain is already housed within the Accord Saloon in the United States. That means it’s a proven unit, so its debut in the CR-V over this side of the pond looks like a safe bet. The system is named Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD), and it facilitates a trio of drive settings. Allelectric can be selected in EV Drive, but only for limited amounts of time, due to the minuscule 1kWh battery bundle. Hybrid Drive utilises the clout of the 2.0-litre petrol engine, which runs at low revs to run one of the Honda’s electric motors. This then produces the muscle used by the other motor for momentum. Engine Drive shuts a clutch to allow the front axle to be propelled by the petrol motor, while the transmission is a single fixed ratio transmission. Both all-wheel drive and frontwheel drive versions are offered.
roll in corners. Generally, it feels like a decent set-of-wheels. though. The CR-V Hybrid’s 51.4mpg fuel efficiency isn’t earth-shattering, but it’s comparable with most similarly-sized diesel-driven vehicles. It’ll be easier on the pocket than the standard petrol-propelled version, that’s for sure. Alas, practicality isn’t as good with the CR-V Hybrid. This is because the environmentally-friendly power system cuts into the Honda’s boot space, slashing it from 561 litres to 497 litres. There’s a lot of handy room in the cabin, though - and leg and headspace in the rear are better than ever. Keep an eye out for the new CR-V Hybrid – you can order it now, but it officially goes on sale in the UK in February 2019.
PRO’s & CON’s
So, in Hybrid Drive, the simplest way to understand how the Honda powertrain works is to imagine it being akin to a hydrogen fuel cell car – but, instead, it’s using petrol to produce a charge for the electric motor. The CR-V Hybrid favours EV Drive or Hybrid settings when it’s not on the motorway. This means the engine is either not running, or it’s just trickling power to the battery pack. But the best bit is that the Honda automatically sorts through its trio of modes depending on what your driving is like - and the changes are virtually flawless.
FAST FACTS (New Honda
If driven conservatively, the CR-V Hybrid is a hushed and comfy car. There’s also a Sport setting, which is meant to give a quicker throttle response – but its influence is minimal.
Engine: 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol + two electric motors Max. power (PS): 184

GET THE LOOK New year, new kitchen – a look at 2019’s biggest trends....
By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
After the gluttony and guilt of Christmas, New Year brings a craving for
rejuvenation. Updates to our minds and bodies begin, but also, for many our homes. So to kick-start your 2019 with some home décor inspiration, we’ve put together three of the upcoming year’s most titillating trends to transform your kitchen.
Mother Nature – we’ve always been her biggest advocate, so when we saw magazines like House Beautiful promoting the increased use of natural materials in our kitchens, and in particular natural stones, we couldn’t have been more excited. This year you’ll see granite, slate and marble, not just on the countertops but up the walls, as far as the ceiling, and waterfall edges meeting the floor. Even the classic butler sink can now be found in a cool Carrara marble, cut from a single block of smooth stone. But these elemental kitchens will also include plenty of wood and metal too. Matte Black is Back - fixtures, hardware, and décor all in matte black. Not in the contemporary, stark style as before, but as part of a twist on the classic Shaker or farmhouse. Matte black slate worktops contrast with dark wood cabinets, alongside a matte black fridge. Industrial Quartz – one of the biggest manufacturers of composite quartz is Caesarstone, and they have added five new colours to their collection inspired by one of the biggest trends in recent years, the industrial look. Shades resembling concrete and rusty metals will provide a rough and unpolished look, with an authentic texture to kitchen worktops, floors and splashbacks. For more information on how to get started updating your kitchen email Coulon Stone on info@coulonstone.com, call us on 01494 484333 or visit our showroom in Stokenchurch.

Look FLAWSOME in 2019 Nutrition | Health | Lifestyle By Jemma Stevens of Flawsome Jem
M
y journey began in September 2014. I was incredibly overweight, I was exhausted all the time and a complete party animal. I thought nothing of going out most evenings to the pub with the boys drinking pints and eating crisps, chain smoking cigarettes. I was doing one of my clients’ hair one day (I’m a hairdresser) and I noticed she had lost a lot of weight since her previous appointment, 5 weeks earlier, so I complimented her and asked her what she had been doing. To which she told me she had been following a plan, which was low on carbs but was real food and 10 mins HIIT exercises a day. I was intrigued to know more and thought well what do I have to lose so signed up for the next group start myself. It was very scary, being part of the group, not knowing anyone but my client. But I was soon at ease, everyone was lovely and having the support and motivation of a group is amazing and so helpful. I used the group to share meals I had made and progress as I went along and it was great to be cheered on by the fellow people on the plan. The first 3 weeks were very strict little or no carbs, no sugar, no dairy, gluten free, etc and I lost 19lbs in the first 21 days! WOW! I couldn’t keep the low carb thing up after that though so I did eat more complex carbs than the plan recommended but I still lost and I had energy throughout the day at work. Having lost such a big amount in the first 3 weeks, this kept me motivated to keep going
and 3 months later at the Christmas I was another 2 stone lighter so I had lost 3 stone 3lbs, bringing my total weight loss to 9 stone! People were starting to comment on my weight loss and compliment me, which again kept me motivated to keep going. Plus I was wearing clothes sizes I hadn’t worn in years and I felt so much better for being lighter. It was my 30th birthday the following April and I was determined to be a size 12-14 by then. I remained consistent and by my birthday I was size 12-14. I still had a bit more to go so I kept at it and I’m now a size 10-12. I haven’t a clue how much I weigh these days but I do know that I have maintained a healthy weight for over 3 years. I don’t believe in weighting yourself or counting calories, when you get to know your body and it’s needs, it all becomes second nature. You want to look after your body because you know what a tough journey it’s been on and want to strengthen and nurture it and be my best self! I have since qualified as a Nutrition and Health Coach, which enabled me to set up my own online Nutrition and Health Coaching business, Flawsome Jem and now I want to support as many of you as possible, sharing my tricks and secrets I’ve learnt along the way! My aim is to help you look and feel healthier, through my quick and easy Meal Plans and Group Support. Let’s Find YOU Again!

New Year, New You... “Firstly I would like to wish all Look Local readers a very happy and healthy New Year”
The beginning of a new year is a time for resolutions and a wish to GET FIT, IMPROVE FITNESS LEVELS or simply a desire to feel BETTER. Find out this year how Bowen Therapy may help you achieve some of your lifestyle wishes. Bowen Therapy/Neurostructural Integrative Technique (NST) is a dynamic, hands - on, non - invasive remedial therapy. This treatment is an alternative medical system that utilises gentle, but powerful soft tissue activations that aid the body in self-healing mechanisms. There is no manipulation, no awkward bending, twisting or repositioning of the client. The experience of a treatment is subtle and relaxing. Clients report a decrease in pain, improvement of function, recovery of energy and an improved feeling of well being Bowen / NST is suitable for clients of all ages - from tiny babies through to those with chronic conditions and the elderly.
News from 2018: This year will continues to confirm many reports regarding the reduction of invasive surgery, injections, scans and medication for back, knee and shoulder problems. NICE guidelines are now recommending that the first line of action for medics is to advise patients on lifestyle changes to help improve certain conditions, including soft tissue therapy, return to work, exercise and diet. As I write this my appointment schedule includes 3 new clients this week presenting with, Fertility Issues, Chronic Knee and Leg Pain and Back Pain, and I look forward to the challenge! Appointments have been booked and I am hoping very much that I can help with these issues. Most conversations that I have with new patients begin with ‘I have seen a doctor, had scans, had injections, have been prescribed medication, have been for other treatments; I have made no progress…can you help?” The answer is YES, I hope so!
Testimonial: “It’s a kind of magic!”: “Every time I see Jen I feel so much more upright. I feel free and able to breathe. Training for my marathon continues and the support I get from my sessions is not only physical but mental too, which is so important to me.” With all my clients, my aim is to work with the presenting issues, to try and alleviate dis-ease in a body. Once resolved many clients come back regular for maintenance sessions and are able to increase their levels of physical activity. Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.
So, maybe Bowen/NST could help you?
Retained Reflexes could your child be
presenting symptoms www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk
An
increasing number of children are currently being labelled with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD’s), attention deficit disorders (ADD & ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, auditory, visual & sensory processing disorders etc. Many struggle meanwhile with non-specific difficulties such as classroom learning, movement control, social interactions, concentration and even emotional maturity. Most ‘labels’ have a medical reference, which some people find helpful, however the terms merely describe a set of symptoms. As a Neural Developmental Therapist, Jo Rodhouse, of Thame Therapy Clinic, sees these myriad of symptoms as an indication of developmental delay and very often there is a simple explanation which is the presence of ‘Retained Reflexes’.
What are Retained Reflexes and why do they have such an impact? In the womb and early stages of life, we are equipped with a number of reflexes to aid the birthing process and ensure the survival and safety of the new-born into early infancy, such as grasping and sucking. As the newborn develops, the brain begins to mature and take control, so these early reflexes are no longer needed and switch off. This is an essential stage of normal development. If, however, these reflexes fail to inhibit they can have a huge impact on appropriate function and a child may display immature patterns of behaviour – lacking appropriate emotional, social & behavioural responses
and co-ordination issues. It may explain why a seemingly intelligent child struggles to learn and thrive as others do.
What signs of retained reflexes would I have seen as a parent? Evidence is often seen at the early key stages of development when the child has deviated from the norm such as difficult or delayed birthing, feeding or latching issues, failure to crawl, delayed teething or speech, easily startled, unusual sleep patterns, fussy eating, thumb suckers, toe-walkers, late in becoming ‘dry’ or bedwetting. As a consequence of delayed development we can see poor impulse control, sensory overload, emotional and social immaturity, anxiety and frustration, motion sickness, poor balance & coordination, easily distracted with poor concentration & focus, an inability to adapt to change. The classroom is often where we see the impact. The most common feedback we receive from parents is that children are simply failing to thrive or ‘I could always tell something wasn’t quite right’ – after all there is no better expert than a parent!
What is the treatment? We offer non–intrusive, drug free Neural Stimulation Programmes which are performed at home, normally twice a day and should take no longer than 5 minutes. We then review progress and update the programme on a 6/8 weekly basis. Jo is a fully qualified and insured Neural Developmental Therapist practicing out of Thame Therapy Clinic, Thame and The Castle Street Clinic, High Wycombe.

Making a Will
H
Some important decisions.
aving made the decision to make your Will, there are some important points you need to consider before meeting with a Will Writer. By having many of the answers available it will leave more time to discuss the other important issues which may arise during the consultation. A professional Will Writers job is to take your instructions and translate them into your Will, creating a document which accurately reflects your wishes. The Will needs to be understood by your executors and most importantly, The Probate Court, to ensure that it is proved quickly, thus minimising any problems after your death which could cause delays leading to hardship for your loved-ones.
THE APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTORS You may choose to appoint a member of your family, a prime beneficiary or close friend to act as an executor. Remember, an executor can also be a beneficiary. If you do need to appoint a professional executor, you could opt for either a solicitor, chartered accountant or a Trust Corporation to act on your

behalf. Your Will Consultant will be able to advise on the best option for your circumstances.
APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIANS If you have children (under the age of 18) you will need to appoint guardians. It may be helpful to make at least one guardian a joint executor as they have a right to money from your estate to help towards the upbringing of your child. This amount can be restricted to a certain amount or could be left in a trust fund. If you have a child with additional needs, who are likely to require specialist care either at home or in the care of the Local Authority, a trust will be required to ensure adequate funds are available for their future.
PROPERTY How you hold your property will determine how it passes on after your death. As ‘joint tenants’ your share will pass on to the survivor automatically. If you wish to pass your ‘interest’ in the property to your children or others, you should hold your property as ‘tenants in common’. More in-depth information can be discussed with your consultant. For more in-depth information or experienced advice regarding Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Funeral Plans contact Michael Bradley on 01844 281013 or 07868 746406.
