Hello Readers,

12

Happy New Year and welcome to the January 2022 Edition of Look Local Magazine. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and were able to be with loved ones this year after what had been another challenging year. We were incredibly lucky within our family and extended family to avoid Covid which enabled us to have a very special Christmas all together with our grandparents included. It really was a magical day and one I shall treasure for always. That’s one positive thing that has come out of the pandemic, its to be truly grateful for the little things in life because those actually mean more than gold.

My biggest wish for this coming year is that the younger generations get to complete a full and uninterrupted year at School/College/University, that travel and foreign holidays continue to be an option and that by this Christmas we will all be able to enjoy the festivities without any disruptions. So as we enter another uncertain year it is more important now that ever to support all our local businesses, as many have taken a real bashing the last couple of years - myself included. We all need to do our bit to support our local community to help it rebuild and get back on its feet. There’s a wonderful selection of local businesses promoting their products and services in this edition plus we have some great articles from our regular contributors including inspiration for your garden and your home. There’s also local music events to (finger crossed) look forward to and we have a some lovely uplifting stories to read in our News & Events section. And if you’re starting a new business venture this year or you already have a business that you’re aiming to grow throughout 2022 then please do get in touch for further information on advertising rates and editorial opportunities within the magazine. I also offer a print and design service (as well as personalised gifts) through my other business, Scratch-em & Vinyl - please see feel to join my Facebook Group for examples of my work. As always, Stay safe, and continue to shop and support local...

Home & Garden

Look locally over The Garden Gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford

This year I want to take you through the calendar months with a plant in profile. But with a difference, we will be looking at the maintenance of some garden favourites. Thus January is the month of the Rose. All roses benefit from an annual prune unless of course, you have a generous garden that can take the abundance of the rambling rose. Best when left to froth abundant over boundaries. Hybrid, Floribunda, Shrub, English, Grandiflora, Climbers, and Ground Cover Roses are best pruned in winter when they are dormant. They are strong vigorous plants when they enjoy their conditions and they can take a good haircut to keep them in shape. This pruning process ensures the new current year’s growth is full of lots of blooms. The key here is a framework. They are tip bearing woody perennials and as such produce their flowers on the current year’s growth. The blooms are big and heavy so roses do not really want to be pruned hard (eg. 2 inches above the ground). In fact, they all benefit from that aforementioned framework that thickens and holds shorter extension growth stable above the plant. This is in the main 4-6 inches above the ground unless a climber. Prune to create a cushion-like shape, take out dead diseased and damaged wood, remove fallen leaves, and mulch with farmyard manure FYM for best results.

With love, Lucie Want to know more? Get in touch for my rose health checklist or join me for the Rose Pruning Masterclass on @mimosadesign Facebook. Email: info.mimosadesign@gmail.com Call: 07737 286784

Walking Britain’s Oldest Road...

Join Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity for an 80 mile charity hike along Britain’s oldest road next summer and experience the breath-taking views and historic sites along the way on this 4-day guided trek. The 80 mile hike follows the Ridgeway, used since prehistoric times by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers, from Swindon back to Aylesbury, walking and being supported by fellow walkers, united in the same goal – to support Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity. This year 40 hospice supporters took part on the charity’s first ever Ridgeway Hike and raised over £70,000 for local hospice care. The walkers each had a different reason to why they wanted to take part in the hike and support the charity, many walking in memory of loved ones who had been cared for by the Hospice team. Steve said, “I can honestly say that is the best and most enjoyable extreme event I have done. Thank you all.” If you are interested in taking on this challenge the next trek will take place from 9th – 12th June 2022. You can find out more about the Ridgeway Trek and details of how to sign up at https://www.fnhospice.org.uk/ridgewaytrek2022 or call 01296 429975 for more information.

Midsomer Tours support good causes despite tough year... Despite a tough year in which the pandemic meant visitor numbers were well down on previous years, Thame’s Midsomer Walking Tours still managed to donate a respectable sum from ticket sales to worthy causes in Thame. On Monday this week, the Mayor of Thame, Paul Cowell, and Adrian Dite, a Trustee of Thame Museum, were each presented with a cheque for £408 as a donation from ticket sales during the 2021 season, which ended on 31st October. The Mayor’s Charity this year is Thame Youth Projects, a registered charity working to support young people in and around Thame, whose projects are entirely dependent upon grant-funding,

News & Events donations and voluntary contributions. The Mayor said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Midsomer Tours for their generous donation to the Mayor’s Charity, Thame Youth Projects. This team of volunteers are focused on providing a safe space for young people to socialise and have open conversations about their personal concerns. As a charity, it would be unable to provide such support without donations from local community groups. Once again, thank you to Midsomer Tours”. Adrian Dite said, “Thame Museum has been pleased to work with the Thame Midsomer Tours project from the very start. We are pleased to have received this donation as the Museum is a community-run venture, staffed entirely by volunteers, relying on sponsors, donations and grants to continue its goal of telling the Story of Thame. Thank you, Thame Midsomer Tours, for bringing a smile to your customers and for your support of the community”. Tony Long of Thame Midsomer Tours said, “We are delighted that our Midsomer Tours continue to be well supported, despite lower numbers this year due to the pandemic, which meant there were almost no overseas visitors. Nevertheless, we still managed to achieve £1244 from ticket sales, enabling us to share £816 between the Mayor’s Charity and Thame Museum. Altogether, we have raised almost £5,000 for good causes in Thame since the tours started in 2017. By attracting visitors to the historic town of Thame the tours also contribute to the local economy and we hope visitor numbers will be back up to previous levels in 2022”.

New Looks for the New Year... By Coulon Stone The New Year can make us itchy for a home refresh. As we’ve found a whole new appreciation for our kitchens over the last couple of years, here could be the best place to start. Whilst it’s never been more important for our kitchens to be a multifaceted space, they also need to look beautiful and represent all sides of our style. Here are some inspirational kitchen design ideas which are set to be big in 2022. Slab Splashbacks Whilst our kitchens need to be a practical space, we still want them to make a statement, and what better way to mix the two than a wall of natural stone sat behind our most used areas, the hob and sink. A book-matched marble, or striking quartzite add natural textures, reflect the light, and add the wow factor, all whilst being wipe clean! There’s no better mix of practical and beautiful.

Chequerboard Flooring Chequerboard flooring is set to be big next year, but thankfully not the black and white lino of the 1950s. Instead natural stone tiles like black, red or brown granites alongside white or grey marbles add a sense of luxury, durability and texture to this traditional look.

Unique Marbles Marble makes the kitchen trend lists every year, but typically it’s the traditional neutral whites and greys that hale the pages of House Beautiful. We’re looking forward to seeing some of the more unique marbles used as countertops and splashbacks. Marbles come in emerald greens, pale pinks and royal blues and can include fossils, glassy streams as well as unique veins. Choose your marble first and centre your kitchen colour palette around it.

For further inspiration please visit our showroom in Stokenchurch or head to our website www.coulonstone.com. You can also join us on Instagram (@coulonstoneltd) and Facebook (@coulonstoneltd).
