The festival then kicks of at noon on Saturday 14th with the main stage outside the Town Hall as well as across various venues throughout the town. So if you’re looking for a funfilled day out with friends and family this is the place to be. Turn to page 18 for further information about the event If Gin is your thing and you fancy a break from the kids, why not join the team at the Crown in Sydenham between Friday 6th - Saturday 14th for their ‘Gin Fest’ where you can enjoy a Gin inspired Tasting Menu accompanied with selected boutique gins all for only £44.95pp. Contact them directly on 01844 351634 for tickets. In the spotlight... Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2018 review

MOTORING

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.

The A-Class has become sexier with each incarnation – and 2018’s Mk4 is a car oozing desirability.

@carwriteups

It’s a classy hatch with one diesel option – the A180d. Then there are the A200 and A250 petrols. All are offered with a seven-speed dual-clutch auto. But, from 2019, manuals and more powerful engines will join the party.

The

A250 I’m reviewing here gets your juices flowing tastefully. It’s got a bit of ‘oomph’ to it – as you’d expect from a car with a 224PS 2.0-litre lump under the lid. Inside, you feel like a King, with a digital set-up that you’d expect to find in a chauffeur driven luxury limo. The brand’s clever ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice control responds well to pretty much anything you ask of it. Additionally, although the Audi A3 trumps the A-Class on rear seat space, comfort is better than that offered by the rival. The seating and dash materials are marginally better, too – and that takes some doing. Indeed, I’d go as far to say that this Mercedes-Benz has set the bar one notch higher in the compact class.

with aplomb. The car holds its own at 70mph, and there’s quite a bit of fun to be had when you point it at twisty tarmac. The front-wheel-drive Merc hunkers down, relaxes and then pings you out of the bends accurately and pleasingly. All this makes it an easy hatchback to like. So, if sexy looks, a charming cabin, great handling and a premiumbadged hatch float your boat, then the new A-Class comes highly recommended.

On the move, the sporty sound the new A-Class makes is gratifying, and it’s always eager to please – especially in ‘Sport’ mode. But the hatchback delivers a calmer experience in ‘Comfort’ setting, soothing the parts that some other compact cars fail to reach.

PRO’s & CON’s

The auto ‘box can sound a bit strained when you give the Merc the beans, but most of the time it’s a smooth operator. What’s more, the shift paddles on the steering wheel - if you want to use them - are highly responsive.

A-Class A250 - as tested)

As handling and ride go, this small Mercedes is perfect for everyday motoring needs. I drove it on motorways and rural roads and felt satisfied all day. Even the potholes on the Cotswolds’ test route didn’t rain on the parade. The A-Class handled them

Bringing the outdoors in.....

More and more of our interior trends focus on bringing the outdoors in. Tropical prints, hanging house plants and pineapple props have been some of the biggest interior trends over the past year. So why not literally bring the outdoors in by choosing a stone that seamlessly sweeps from your patio and in to your home.

It’s important to consider your options carefully when choosing your stone because not all are suited for outdoor environments. For example certain granites may be slippery when wet. It’s also important to consider which stones are appropriate for indoor living spaces, for example marble can stain easily so may not work well in kitchen areas. The ideal options are slate, limestone and sandstone. When finished with a “flame brushed” texture, all three stones are slip resistant. They come in a variety of shades meaning you’re guaranteed to find a colour to match your interior style, whether that be a solid black slate for a sleek, contemporary pad, or a fossil filled limestone for your rustic farmhouse. They are also the most affordable choice. To really create one, seamless space, remove walls and replace with bi-fold doors and your garden will become a wonderful extension of your home. If you’re thinking of updating your indoor and outdoor space with natural stone, contact Coulon Stone by visiting our website www. coulonstone.com or calling 01494 484333, for your free, no obligation quote.

NEWS & EVENTS in our region Winner of Thame Food Festival Bursary for Local Artisan Food Producers is announced...

After making their way through a raft of applications Thame

Food Festival are delighted to announce that their very first bursary has been awarded to Tess’ Brilliant Bakes. Set up by Lisa Hartwright in the middle of 2017, the concept was initially built as a delicious sideline business selling to friends and family, but more recently Lisa has been venturing out into the realms of artisan food markets. Priding herself on using local quality ingredients where possible, Lisa has gradually extended her range to include various cookies, tray bakes, loaf cakes, cupcakes and larger cakes. The bursary includes £1,000 (which Lisa is going to spend on a catering oven), a free pitch at this year’s Thame Food Festival event, a free page in the festival programme, plus PR and social media support for one year. On top of that, she is going to be supported by high profile Food Festival Mentors who will be willing to help and encourage her over the year, using their many years of experience within the food and hospitality industry. These are: •

Adam Johnson, Head Development Chef for Raymond Blanc OBE, at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons Oxfordshire (pictured)

Chris Wheeler, Executive Chef for Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire (pictured)w

Nick Downie, Head of Marketing for Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire

When told of the news Lisa said, “I can’t quite believe it. It’s wonderful to have such a group of people believe in me and what I make. It’s also with huge thanks to my partner Paul. Without his unwavering support I wouldn’t be able to do this” she continues, “I am already thinking about new recipes that I would like to share with the mentors to see what they think. There is even talk of us developing a special Thame Food Festival Bake specifically for the event in September. I can’t wait!” Lotte Duncan Patron and Organiser of Thame Food Festival also said, “We were absolutely delighted with the response to our very first bursary and my goodness the competition was tough. There were some great products from some amazing artisan producers, but we just had to make a decision. However, there was just something about Lisa and even more importantly about her fabulous products that completely won all the judges over. It will be a real delight to support her over the next year and see her at the event in our especially dedicated Bursary Area, which will include some of the other applicants and finalists.” Thame Food Festival CIC is a not for profit community interest company. Supported by Raymond Blanc, this year is aiming to have over 120 artisan producers alongside demonstrations from many leading chefs and bakers. Now in its 11th year, this year’s event will be held on the Thame Show Ground on 29th & 30th September 2018.

You only have one pair of ears make sure you protect them!

Many of us take our ears and hearing for granted and it is only when they are damaged that we take notice. In today’s digital world, our hearing is challenged more than ever before. Many of us wear earplugs or headphones and our ears are therefore constantly switched on or ‘plugged in’. It is estimated that 66% of us listen to music louder than 85 decibels, which means we are risking permanent hearing damage and tinnitus. If you think your lifestyle may be damaging your ears, it is worth asking yourself the following questions:

At Aston Hearing we encourage a pro-active approach and want people to protect their ears before they have a problem. We offer custom-made earplugs which are made bespoke for the best possible fit and we have a range of styles to suit different situations, from music gigs to industrial environments. Our in-house expert, Richard, has been involved in drum and bass music production for many years and can advise you on the best way forward.

• Have you ever hit the pillow after a night out and had a ringing or buzzing in your ears? • Have you ever removed your music earphones and found you can still hear the bass? • Can your friends hear the music from your headphones when sitting next to you? • Do you have tinnitus? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these then you may have already damaged your hearing. One of the most common signs of damage to the inner ear is tinnitus, or ‘ringing in the ear’. It can happen when you are exposed to loud noise, through injury, a side effect of medication, infection or stress. It can be very debilitating and disturbing to live with. One way to manage or avoid tinnitus is to protect your ears from loud noise.

“When I am not manning the front desk at Aston Hearing, I am busy producing music and have been aware of the importance of protecting my ears for a long time. Do come in and see me for more information or take a look at our website at www.astonhearing.co.uk under ‘protecting your hearing’.” - Richard

INTRODUCING

Anita Watson...

Osteopath and Iyengar Yoga Teacher Anita has been an osteopath for 22 years and an Iyengar yoga teacher for 14 years. She combines her osteopathic and her yoga knowledge to assess people’s posture and musculoskeletal function. As well as hands on treatment involving massage and manipulation, Anita recommends yoga based exercises for patients to work on their particular difficulties.

W

ith chronic pain and chronic health issues, it is the management of the condition that is important. Anita works with patients to inspire, educate and motivate them to take on regular specific exercise regimes to improve posture, strength, flexibility and joint function. For example, safe and effective stretches may be shown to increase flexibility in muscles such as the hamstrings, gluts and quadriceps, or, twists and stretches can be shown for specific spinal mobilisation. Exercises can be given to build core stability or specific programs can be given for stiff or injured shoulders, or arthritic hips, sciatic pain and neck and shoulder tension. Osteopathic treatment in conjunction with remedial yoga programs is very effective for most difficulties with the musculoskeletal system. However, there are many other body systems that can also benefit from both osteopathic treatment and remedial yoga. The nervous system, the circulatory and respiratory system, the endocrine and digestive systems can also all be improved. There are many resting, or recuperative poses that can be given to help with stress, tension, anxiety, depression and fatigue, as well as poses that help with digestive and circulatory problems. The key is assessing an individuals health from a holistic perspective, looking at all possible contributory factors to their symptoms and showing the exercises to patients that their body most needs. Anita also has a particular interest in nutrition and will often incorporate some advice in this area too, in the form of supplement recommendations where necessary, advice for weight loss and dealing with food sensitivities/intolerance. Anita works at the Thame Therapy Clinic on Thursdays and teaches general group yoga sessions at the Thame barns centre on Tuesdays (11:30-1) and Thursdays (7:30-9pm). A Good Read

Flat Stanley By Jeff Brown

Stanley Lambchop is a rather unusual boy. After an accident with a bulletin board, he is four feet tall, about a foot wide – and half an inch thick. Of course, being flat has its advantages – Stanley’s trip to California in an envelope is great, and his brother Arthur would love to be able to slide under their bedroom door like Stanley does. And, if Stanley was round, he would never have been able to assist his neighbour in catching thieves intent on stealing the world’s most famous painting.

But there are downsides too – while it is great to be a kite for half an hour, it’s not so much fun when Arthur gets bored and leaves Stanley stuck in a tree. People can be cruel too, and eventually the name calling gets too much. Luckily, Arthur is on hand with a solution to his brother’s problem... This picture book manages to make an impossible situation seem perfectly plausible, thanks to the matter of fact style and simple, convincing illustrations. Ideal to read aloud to younger children or as a first book for newly confident readers, it has stood the test of time since its first publication in 1968. If it isn’t already a family favourite, then it is destined to become one very, very quickly.
