Stoke Road Traders
Stoke Road welcomes you...
If you take a walk out of Gosport town, past Morrisons and Walpole Park you come to the traditional shopping street that is Stoke Road offering a treasure trove of niche businesses, many of which are independently owned.
S
toke Road doesn’t offer a modern retail shopping complex, what it does provide is a classic shopping experience on a road, steeped in history, through which you can still drive and park your car on the road, right outside the shops. If parking spaces on the road are occupied there are short stay car parks (most of which are free) at various locations along the street allowing you the time you need to explore the plethora of shops and services at your leisure. Over the next few pages of our magazine are just a small selection of the unique, and somewhat quirky, businesses that make up part of Gosport’s principle

The importance of a Will...
The importance of making a Will cannot be overstated, but ensuring it is up to date can be just as important. Ben Holden a solicitor and specialist in this area comments “A Will is a document that should give you and your loved ones peace of mind. An out of date Will can have disastrous consequences for all concerned”. In this month’s issue Ben answers some frequent questions he gets asked concerning Wills! Why should I bother updating my Will?
Life never stands still. Your personal circumstances, the circumstances of people named in your Will and the law change. If you do not review and update your Will, your assets may end up in the wrong hands. Reviewing your Will at regular intervals is the best way of ensuring your assets end up in the right hands.
How often should I review my Will?
There is no right answer, but in general terms you should review your Will at least every 3 years. Nonetheless if your personal affairs are far from straightforward and/or you have a complex Will, you should consider a review every 1 to 2 years. A review should also be considered if there is a change in your personal circumstances or those of the persons named in your Will (your beneficiaries and/or executors). I am about to remarry should I review my Will? Yes. Your subsequent marriage will automatically revoke your Will. This can be prevented by including a non-revocation clause in your Will. You should also review, and where necessary update your Will, to ensure that it meets the requirements of your new family. This is particularly important if you have children from a previous marriage and you want them to benefit from your Will. I have made Will Trust for Inheritance Tax Purposes should this be reviewed? Yes. Prior to October 2007 many married couples set up complex Will Trusts for Inheritance Tax purposes. The trusts were used to take advantage of each spouse’s Nil Rate Band and they were often referred to as ‘Nil Rate Band Discretionary Trusts’. The law was changed in October 2007 and for Inheritance Tax purposes many of these trusts became redundant. These Wills are usually long and complex and can now be simplified. If you have one of these trusts, it would be sensible to review your will and make any necessary changes. My son has just been made bankrupt, he is a beneficiary under my Will. What should I do? You need to seek urgent legal advice. If your son is left anything under your Will this could end up in the hands of his creditors. Preventing assets ending up in the wrong hands is often an issue, particularly if your beneficiaries are going through financial difficulty or matrimonial proceedings. It is possible to protect your assets (and your beneficiaries) by ensuring that the Please mention Look Local Magazine when responding to adverts.

correct clauses appear in your Will. My circumstances haven’t really changed. Should I bother reviewing my Will? Your circumstances may be same since you signed your Will, but the law and world around you will undoubtedly be different. To be on the safe side you need to review your Will. I want to review my Will what should I do? Seek legal advice from a qualified Solicitor who specialises in this area. Ben Holden is the Head of the Wills & Probate Department at Donnelly & Elliott and has over a decade of experience in dealing with such issues. By providing simple solutions to often complicated circumstances he offers practical advice that is also cost effective. As part of their commitment to excellence in this field, Donnelly and Elliott Solicitors are proud to be accredited members of the Law Society’s Wills & Inheritance Quality Scheme.

What you can you achieve in
30 MINUTES..?
‘How can you achieve a Full Body Workout in 30 minutes?’ is a question commonly asked by ladies when visiting Curves. The answer is simple – hydraulic resistance! In a traditional gym, this can take more than 3 times longer to do cardio then resistance training on all the muscles. At Curves you save time by performing cardio and resistance training simultaneously with one another by using hydraulic resistance, instead of weight stacks or free weights, working 2 muscle groups on one machine. These machines are arranged in a circuit designed to move you onto the next machine after a 30 second blast. This is because your muscles work to their optimum strength during the first 30 seconds of a work out. After this time, the
10
muscle begins to exhaust so working that muscle for any longer is wasted effort! 30 seconds of strength training is also the secret to burning fat and raising metabolism. To burn fat you need to build muscle first, to ‘eat away’ at the fat stores and this process only takes 30 seconds to kick in. To raise your metabolic rate you need more muscle tissue because muscle tissue is metabolically more active and burns more calories long after a workout has finished! The added bonus to this workout is that you haven’t got time to get bored or fatigued as before you know it, you’ve moved onto the next machine. In 30 minutes you can achieve a full body workout with time to spare to enjoy the rest of your day or evening. So, what are you waiting for? Give us a call and see what 30 minutes at Curves will do for your body! By Fran Noble, Curves, for Women. www.curvesgosport.co.uk

The benefits of running By Kelly Fielding, Personal Trainer
Running is free, you can do it anywhere, and it burns more calories than any other mainstream exercise. Regular running can reduce your risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and a stroke. It can also boost your mood and keep your weight under control.
M
y guide is designed to make running a safe and enjoyable experience for beginners, and to provide you with tips on how to stay motivated. Below is what a 60kg person would burn during a 30minute session of; • • •
Running (6mph): 300 calories Tennis (singles): 240 calories Swimming (slow crawl): 240 calories
• • •
Cycling (12-14mph): 240 calories Aerobic dancing: 195 calories Fast walking (4mph): 150 calories
Before you start...
If you feel out of shape, or you’re recovering from injury or worried about an existing condition, see your GP before you start running. If you’ve not been active for a while, you may want to build your fitness levels gently with fast power walking before you move on to running. Running requires very little equipment, but a good pair of running shoes that suit your foot type will reduce the risk of injury. There are many types of trainers on the market, so get advice from a specialist running retailer who will assess your foot and find the right shoe for you. The shoes’ shock absorbers weaken over time, increasing your risk of injury. It’s advisable to replace running shoes every 300 miles (482km). Plan your runs. Work out when and where (the exact route and time) you’re going to run and put it in your diary. That way, it won’t slip your mind.
Starting out...
To avoid injury and enjoy the experience, it’s essential to ease yourself into running slowly and increase your pace and distance gradually over several outings. Start each run with a gentle warm-up of at least five minutes. This can include quick walking, marching on the spot, knee lifts, side stepping and climbing stairs. Start walking for an amount of time that feels comfortable (anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes). Once you can walk for 30 minutes easily, include some running intervals of one to two minutes into your walking at a speed that feels comfortable. As time goes on, make the running intervals longer, until you’re running for 30 minutes continuously. Run with your arms and shoulders relaxed, and elbows bent. Keep an upright posture and a smooth running stride, striking the ground with the middle of your foot. Give yourself a few minutes to cool down (to bring your heartbeat back to normal) after each run by walking followed by gently stretching of your leg muscles. Regular running for beginners means getting out at least twice a week. Your running will improve as your body adapts to the consistent training stimulus. It’s better to run twice a week, every week, than to run half a dozen times one week and then do no running for the next three weeks.

Recipes for a
Slimmer Summer
As the weather gets warmer, we can’t hide behind our layers and baggy clothes so we want to look and feel our best. However, the summer months can be a difficult time for slimmer’s because our normal routines are usually disrupted with holidays, the kids are off school and we’re busy enjoying days out, meaning it can feel harder than usual to eat healthily and fit in activity. Slimming World isn’t about going ‘on a diet’, it’s about discovering a new way of eating that means you can still have the foods you love and live your life. People often think that losing weight means sticking to a strict rigid plan and going without. Our plan fits in around you, rather than you having to fit your life around the plan, and unlike other weight-loss plans the focus is on all the fabulous foods you can enjoy – including BBQ and picnic favourites – instead of what you can’t have.” Like mouth-watering meals, light bites, ice-cold desserts and drinks, plus fresh ideas for sizzling barbecues and pretty picnics. So would you like to be tucking into Surf and Turf Skewers with fresh ketchup, Rustic potato salad or Cherry cheesecake in a jar (or all three!), So by joining Slimming World you will be guaranteed your tastiest – and trimmest – summer ever. All recipes which we use are all easy enough to suit all cooking abilities and each one is accompanied by a photo of the finished article to tempt the taste buds and help inspire novice cooks.
Cherry Cheese Cake in a Jar
Ingredients Serves 4, ready in 30 minutes, plus cooling and chilling, 1½ level tsp arrowroot | Juice of 1 orange | 1 tbsp sweetener | 250g cherries, stoned and destalked, plus whole cherries to decorate | 5 amaretti biscuits, roughly crushed | 300g quark | 200g fat free natural Greek yogurt | 4 whole almonds, shelled and roughly chopped. Method • Measure out 100ml of water and mix 1 tablespoon with the arrowroot to form a paste. Set aside. • Put the rest of the water in a small pan with the orange juice and 1 teaspoon of sweetener. Bring to the boil over a high heat then stir in the arrowroot paste until thickened. • Return to the boil, add the cherries and simmer for 3-4 minutes or until the cherries have softened slightly. Set aside to cool. • Divide the amoretti biscuits between four 200ml jars or dessert glasses and spoon a few cherries and some of the syrup into each one. • Put 250g of quark, the yogurt and the remaining sweetener into a bowl and whisk until smooth. • Stir in most of the cherries and the syrup, divide between the jars or glasses and smooth the tops. Chill for at least 15 minutes. • Meanwhile, dry-fry the almonds in a pan over a high heat for 1-2 minutes or until just golden. Top the jars or glasses with a dollop of the remaining quark and spoon over the remaining cherries and syrup. • Scatter over the almonds and decorate with whole cherries to serve.

P
move around more, thus flexing those muscles - plus speaking about the issues, when you are ready, rather than storing them up. This is an area of neuropsychology that I find really fascinating, that the brain will voluntarily make its own body ill and the person, whose body it is, can help sort out the smooth and effective running of their brain by using the body differently.
erhaps it is the longer hours of daylight, rather than sunshine, that lift the spirits, but certainly, far fewer people approach counsellors for help with persistent low moods between April and midSeptember. As soon as the evenings begin to draw in, there is a reliable increase in requests for counselling for these issues. That can make life especially difficult for anyone who is not caught up in the tide of summer optimism, joyful outings and holiday plans. If a new enquirer books an appointment for help with depression in the summer months, then there is usually a history of suppressed feelings and of loss. So, the work gently gathers and works through all of these feelings, experiences and wishes in a way that makes them no longer overwhelming. Person-centred counselling is like having a supporter on the path you are walking, or wheeling – but it remains your choice of path, your pace and your destination. I suppose the counsellor’s role is best described as holding the light for you, in that she can notice a ‘pothole’ ahead and warn you about it and also help you to identify whether your planned ‘destination’ is the right one for you. Part of the counsellor’s job, then, is to support you to make sound choices and to build your confidence in handling each and every situation you
encounter. To celebrate your achievements and you may well find yourself doing things of which you imagined you were not capable! The counsellor will also encourage you to work with her on the difficult feelings, the longings, the loneliness and the ‘if only’s’. An opportunity to relieve the mind of its burdens and the heart of its pain. People report leaving sessions feeling ‘lighter’, ‘renewed’ and ‘better than I have felt for years.’ Many bodily symptoms, especially aches and pains, are actually sent to our muscles by a brain that is too full. Did you know that? If an ache has no physical explanation, then what may have happened is that this brain became inefficient while processing too many different thoughts and feelings and it decided to dump some of it on the body. And the best way to relieve the pains and aches is to either

Of course, for some people, counselling isn’t the right route, either they don’t want to talk, or they just feel too scared to unpack some of the memories, so they decide to keep a diary – however you express it, is the right way for you, to lighten the load. I hope that this article has addressed the uncomfortable feelings you may have if you are unable to present yourself ‘sunny side up’, because you feel miserable and dejected. Just one step to help and support, or self-help, will make a difference. So please don’t think that you are odd, or shouldn’t feel despondent, when you have, supposedly, everything going for you. It is not your fault, and life can be so much better than it is right now.

Take a big dollop of your butter cream and spread over one of the layers. Sprinkle with a generous helping of chopped walnuts. Repeat this with the remaining sponges until you reach the top- with this layer sift over some cocoa powder for a rustic finishing touch.
Enjoy!

Hi, I’m Julie Whitehead and I have been a midwife for more than 20 years. I am also a registered lactation consultant as one of my many passions is supporting women with breast feeding their babies. SAFER SLEEP FOR BABIES Meeting and getting to know your baby is an extremely exciting and rewarding time. It’s also the beginning of a new relationship. Babies need a lot of sleep during the first few months of their lives so it’s important to ensure that they are sleeping as safely as possible. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden and unexplained death of a baby where no cause is found. While SIDS is rare, it can still happen and there are steps parents can take to help reduce the chance of this tragedy occurring.
Quick Tips for Safer Sleep
We are still struggling to understand the mechanisms that cause unexplained deaths in infancy, therefore it is not possible for any manufacturer to say that a particular product will prevent SIDS. It is possible, however, to significantly lower the chances of it happening by following this safer sleep guidance. This advice is based on strong scientific evidence where, unlike many products, safety has been proven. You should try to follow the advice for all sleep periods where possible, not just at night.
Things you can do...
Things to avoid..

•
•
• •
Always place your baby on their back to sleep.
Keep your baby smoke free during pregnancy and after birth. Place your baby to sleep in a separate cot or Moses basket in the same room as you for the first 6 months. Breastfeed your baby, if you can. Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress in good condition.
•
• •
Never sleep on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby.
Don’t sleep in the same bed as your baby if you smoke, drink or take drugs or are extremely tired, if your baby was born prematurely or was of a low birth-weight. Avoid letting your baby get to hot. Don’t cover your baby’s face or head while sleeping or use loose bedding.

Here’s a few healthy eating tips for children that you could try at home.
)%8 83+)8,)6 %7 % *%1-0=
Although it can be trying, stay positive, as your mood will make more of an impact than you think and your child will respond to this. Make positive comments when eating with your child, like ‘yummy’ as these comments will encourage your child and they’ll be more inclined to try!
20
Your child wants to get involved, so why don’t you encourage them to help you when you’re shopping or set the table? Children enjoy tasks and feeling like they’ve achieved something. Letting them play their part is a brilliant way to give them a sense of accomplishment. These things will encourage your child to have a positive attitude towards their food and mealtimes.

Praise is so important for your child, in all aspects. It helps with their self-esteem, confidence and their attitude. When your child eats well, praise them, as they will respond positively to this,

Dining with your child as a family will encourage them to eat. This may not be a possibility every mealtime, but try to do it often. Children often mimic their parents, so try to eat the same foods as your child and it will encourage them to follow suit.
Remember, your child is full of imagination, so make their mealtimes fun! You can make food relatable to them and what they like. For example, you could call broccoli, ‘mini trees’ or call spinach ‘Popeye’s superhero power’. You could also use cookie cutters to make fun shapes out of foods like sandwiches. Doing this will hopefully intrigue them to eat more.

As a parent, you play a crucial role in ensuring your little one eats healthily, helping to give them a positive start in life. However, sometimes it’s not easy getting your child to eat nutritional meals and it can be quite stressful.

America’s Cup 26
The History
The America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in sport world. The first race was organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1851, it was a single race around the Isle of Wight, open to yachts of all nations. The prize was a silver Cup that was valued at One Hundred Pounds sterling. The black schooner America won this nascent contest of maritime supremacy, outclassing the rest of the field to be first at the finish line off Cowes. To honour that victory, it was renamed the America’s Cup and became a challenge.
About The Americas Cup World Series, Portsmouth The spectacular sight of America’s Cup Racing is coming to British waters this summer when the America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) takes place in Portsmouth between 23rd – 26th July.
The America’s Cup World Series is a collection of regattas leading up to the 35th America’s Cup, every race will count in the series with vital points being secured ahead of the America’s Cup in Bermuda come 2017. The racing will feature the best sailors in the world competing on sleek AC45 catamarans that ‘fly’ on foils at astonishing speeds of up to 40mph. The racing in Portsmouth will take place within touching distance of the onshore spectator Fanzone Arena and cannot fail to be entertaining. The event offers the chance to get under the skin of America’s Cup – see the sailors close up, learn about the racing, the history, the technology. Southsea is the location for both spectator arenas and they will offer exhilarating views of the racing with live expert commentary giving a blow by blow account as the team’s battle on the race course. There will also be cool bars and food zones, providing the perfect place to relax. Teams competing in the America’s Cup World Series, Portsmouth include the America’s Cup defenders Oracle Team USA and the four challengers including Swedish entry Artemis Racing, French entry Team France and Emirates Team New Zealand. For British sailing fans this is the first time you can support home team Ben Ainslie Racing on home waters.
Make an evening of it with Portsmouth Live!
After the spectacular sailing action finishes, big names in pop and rock will take over the show performing at Portsmouth Live!, a ticketed celebration held over three nights in the Waterfront Festival Arena on Southsea Common. The onshore evening program complements four incredible days on the water for the America’s Cup World Series. Thursday 23rd will see the competing teams out on the water in the Official Parade of Sail and take to the stage for a press conference in the Fanzone. Preview racing begins on Friday 24th, while on Saturday the racing gets serious, with two races held as every point matters. The finale ‘Super Sunday’ on 26th will decide the winner for the first ACWS, followed by the official prize giving. Tickets are selling fast, this is the summers ‘must attend’ event! News & Events WAVE 105’S MADAGASCAR CHALLENGE RAISES £98,000 FOR CASH FOR KIDS
Wave 105’s morning presenter Mark Collins, newsreader Michael Coombes, and a team of intrepid explorers, have helped to raise more than £98,000 by cycling through the National Parks of Madagascar for Wave 105’s charity, Cash for Kids.
The team of 27, which consisted of Wave 105 team members, radio listeners and Cash for Kids charity supporters, cycled 450km in total, across five days. The ride took place over the north east of the African island, through a range of terrains and varied landscapes, including tropical fruit plantations, paddy fields and coastal paths.
of native Lemurs, and geckos. On one day we stopped to play a football match with some locals – they beat us 1-0! - and we got to meet some children from a local school who sung their national anthem to us. Of course the best bit of all for me is the amazing amount of money raised for our charity, more than £98,000! We are totally overwhelmed by the support.”
Led by tour guide Miriam, on average the group cycled the equivalent distance from Poole to Portsmouth each day. On the toughest day, they cycled 104km. Expedition leader and Wave 105 presenter, Mark Collins comments: “This was my fourth trip for Wave 105 Cash for Kids, and it was without a doubt the toughest challenge I’ve ever done. I had been training with my colleague Michael Coombes and preparing as much as possible in the gym, but the hills were more extreme than we anticipated, as was the climate. However, even though the ride was physically and mentally demanding, we were with a fantastic bunch of people and there was a real sense of comradery, so we all spurred each other on. “The scenery was absolutely breath taking, as we passed through rain forests and banana plantations, ending up on the coast and overlooking the magnificent Indian Ocean. We also saw some amazing animals, plenty
Wave 105 Cash for Kids charity manager, Gloria Hill, adds: “To say we’re thrilled with the amount of money raised through this Madagascar trip is a bit of an understatement. We can’t thank everyone who supported us enough. All the money will go towards helping many disadvantaged, less fortunate children across our region. “I know this group will be able to take away many memories to treasure for a lifetime.” For more information about Wave 105 Cash for Kids, upcoming events, or other ways to get involved with fundraising please visit: www.wave105.com/charity

Having lived in the south for nearly twenty years, I’m still surprised that there are so many places I’m yet to discover. It was only around five years ago that I cycled through the village of Titchfield almost by mistake. I’d been training for a Wave 105 Cash for Kids event and had got totally lost. I didn’t have a trusty iPhone with Google Maps on it then!
Andy Jackson
As the old Gillette TV advert used to say, ‘I liked it so much I bought the company’ – Well not quite, but I was lucky enough to find a house in Titchfield village, and have lived there for the past three years.
I’ve never quite understood the reason it needs quite so many hairdressers in such a small space though, but then again, I don’t have much in the way of hair…! We’ve also got a great selection of pubs, a Chinese takeaway, a proper butcher and an old-fashioned greengrocer (who even occasionally stocks goose eggs but that’s a story for another day)! My actual favourite place is a 30 minute stroll away via the Titchfield sea canal, or a 15 minute cycle to Titchfield Haven, right on the seafront with fantastic views of the Isle of Wight across the water. It’s a blue flag beach and brilliant for swimming (although there’s no lifeguard). The icecream van is there come rain or shine; in fact it was doing a roaring trade in the rain when the listing cargo vessel Hoegh Osaka was moored off the island recently. If you continue in an easterly direction along the shore, past the entrance to the nature reserve, (and the tea-rooms with the best view in the south overlooking the tiny harbour and sailing club!), you’ll come to some of the most picturesque beach huts anywhere in the country. The whole area is seemingly untouched by modern progress, and I mean that in a good way. If you keep walking you’ll arrive at the Osborne View at Hill Head – it’s maybe 20 minutes on foot or half that on a bike, and if you’re still at beach level you’ll enter through the garden, or from the main road through the main entrance. But the best-kept secret of all is the wealth of seafood to be harvested at low tide. Clams, mussels and even oysters can occasionally be found if you know where to look. You might find me with my family in our trusty campervan parked up close to the beach eating the fruits of the sea on any sunny afternoon. There’s nothing quite like eating what you’ve just picked from the seashore yourself. You’ll find the whole area is really popular with night fishermen too, so although I’m not a fisherman myself I would guess that the fishing’s good. As I often say on my evening show on Wave 105, we are so lucky to be living in what I think is one of the best parts of the country, in one of the best parts of the world. It can be so easy to take for granted what we have right on our own doorstep. If you get a chance this summer, give the Hill Head and Titchfield Haven area a look. If you like it as much as I did when I first discovered it you’ll want to live here too!

Motoring Vehicle Review:
Suzuki Celerio By Tim Barnes-Clay, Tim Barnes-Clay weekly road test journalist for Confused.com.
The Celerio is the latest offering from Suzuki. It is a cute little hatchback which is cheap to buy and inexpensive to run
It comes with a 1.0 litre three-
cylinder petrol unit that’s very thrifty. Indeed, you can wring up to 65.7mpg out of the Suzuki on an average run. This means paying out at the pumps is only going to happen infrequently. Even better, CO2 emissions of 99g/ km qualify the improbably named Celerio for gratis tax. Behind the wheel, there’s a good view of the road because the car is set high. But this does blunt any vague thrills that might have resulted from driving swiftly through corners. The light clutch pedal and steering are fine for meandering around locally, but the car feels out of its depth on busier, faster routes. The five-speed manual gearbox is smooth and straightforward to use, although the lack of a sixth gear can mean accidently grinding into reverse on occasion. Unsurprisingly, the car’s diminutive engine doesn’t make for a rock ‘n’ roll driving experience. With 67bhp, the Celerio 1.0 SZ3, on test here, can manage 0-62mph in 14 seconds. But, to be fair, it feels slightly quicker than
32
those yawn-inducing figures suggest, because the micro car’s body is so light. However, speed isn’t the point here – the Japanese hatchback is simply meant to be a very easy, undemanding motor to drive. After all, this is a vehicle likely to be bought by older people, or perhaps parents needing a school or nursery run around. Inside, the Celerio’s flat floor for rear seat passengers’ feet makes the car far roomier than it looks. A tall roofline adds to that feeling of space, while access is easy thanks to five wide-opening doors. As a result, four adults will fit in the cabin. The boot is the only area that lets the side down. It is a smidgen bigger than some motors in this class, but you still have to remove the parcel shelf to get a toddler’s buggy in. I know, because I have a two year old daughter. Unfortunately, the Suzuki Celerio lacks a top five star safety rating. That is a shame as it could put people off buying this as a school-run car - safety always springs to the front of your mind when you become a parent. But fear not, the only reason it failed to achieve healthier marks is because the model tested by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) didn’t have the
curtain airbags that are fitted as standard to British cars. With them built-in, Suzuki claims the Celerio would have done far better. The car is actually well kitted out for safety, considering the SZ3 model costs less than £8,000. Six airbags, stability control and tyre pressure monitors are all thrown into the bargain. Nice touches such as air-conditioning, a Bluetooth phone connection, DAB radio and electric front windows form part of the Celerio’s appeal, too. With a roomy cabin, and a generous level of kit, you will like the Suzuki Celerio. Just steer away if you’re after thrills and spills. PRO’s & CON’s Cheap
