So the local Festival season kicked off last month with Beacon Festival on Watlington Hill - who went along? We did and we had an absolute blast listening to fantastic local bands whilst enjoying a few pints of Beacon Dark, supplied by XT Brewery. The weather was a bit wet but it didn’t dampen our, or other festival-goers, spirits and the sun made a welcome appearance just in time for the Beacon to be lit so we all got to enjoy the lovely sunset amidst the beautiful, rural surroundings of a buzzing event. Other local festivals coming up this summer are Summerfest in Haddenham on Saturday 4th July, Chinnor Beer Festival, Towersey Festival and Astonbury who, this issue, have offered us a FANTASTIC PRIZE GIVEAWAY. Courtesy of the organisers of this growing annual festival, we have 3 PAIRS of TICKETS to giveaway to 3 LUCKY READERS!!! To enter this exclusive competition please turn to Page 18. Or you can also enter via our Facebook Page. Good Luck! If you’ve still not got round to booking your summer holidays and are looking for inspiration, this month’s Travel feature takes you to the African plains of Botswana bringing you snippets of what to expect when embarking on a safari. Motoring Vehicle Review:

Suzuki Celerio By Tim Barnes-Clay, Tim Barnes-Clay weekly road test journalist for Confused.com.

The Celerio is the latest offering from Suzuki. It is a cute little hatchback which is cheap to buy and inexpensive to run

It comes with a 1.0 litre three-

cylinder petrol unit that’s very thrifty. Indeed, you can wring up to 65.7mpg out of the Suzuki on an average run. This means paying out at the pumps is only going to happen infrequently. Even better, CO2 emissions of 99g/ km qualify the improbably named Celerio for gratis tax. Behind the wheel, there’s a good view of the road because the car is set high. But this does blunt any vague thrills that might have resulted from driving swiftly through corners. The light clutch pedal and steering are fine for meandering around locally, but the car feels out of its depth on busier, faster routes. The five-speed manual gearbox is smooth and straightforward to use, although the lack of a sixth gear can mean accidently grinding into reverse on occasion. Unsurprisingly, the car’s diminutive engine doesn’t make for a rock ‘n’ roll driving experience. With 67bhp, the Celerio 1.0 SZ3, on test here, can manage 0-62mph in 14 seconds. But, to be fair, it feels slightly quicker than

08

those yawn-inducing figures suggest, because the micro car’s body is so light. However, speed isn’t the point here – the Japanese hatchback is simply meant to be a very easy, undemanding motor to drive. After all, this is a vehicle likely to be bought by older people, or perhaps parents needing a school or nursery run around. Inside, the Celerio’s flat floor for rear seat passengers’ feet makes the car far roomier than it looks. A tall roofline adds to that feeling of space, while access is easy thanks to five wide-opening doors. As a result, four adults will fit in the cabin. The boot is the only area that lets the side down. It is a smidgen bigger than some motors in this class, but you still have to remove the parcel shelf to get a toddler’s buggy in. I know, because I have a two year old daughter. Unfortunately, the Suzuki Celerio lacks a top five star safety rating. That is a shame as it could put people off buying this as a school-run car - safety always springs to the front of your mind when you become a parent. But fear not, the only reason it failed to achieve healthier marks is because the model tested by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) didn’t have the

curtain airbags that are fitted as standard to British cars. With them built-in, Suzuki claims the Celerio would have done far better. The car is actually well kitted out for safety, considering the SZ3 model costs less than £8,000. Six airbags, stability control and tyre pressure monitors are all thrown into the bargain. Nice touches such as air-conditioning, a Bluetooth phone connection, DAB radio and electric front windows form part of the Celerio’s appeal, too. With a roomy cabin, and a generous level of kit, you will like the Suzuki Celerio. Just steer away if you’re after thrills and spills. PRO’s & CON’s Cheap

For the frosting, you will need;

200g soft butter , 400g icing sugar, 4tbsp mi lk, 6sp instant espresso powder dissolved in 1tbsp boiling water.

2.

This coffee cake is a classic; it’s made up of a deliciously moist, bold flavoured sponge, a smooth espresso frosting and layers of chopped walnuts- perfect to feed a crowd at a morning meeting or as a casual birthday cake. Place your flour, baking powder, butter, sugars, milk, eggs and salt in a large mixing bowl and beat together with a wooden spoon or electric whisk until smooth and fluffy.

3.

Once well mixed, fold in the coffee and water.

4.

Divide evenly between the cake tins and bake for 35-40 minutes.

5.

Once a skewer comes out of the sponges clean, they are cooked. At this point, sit in the tins for 5 minutes then remove and place on a rack to cool completely.

Onto the frosting: 1.

12

To assemble, you will need your sponges, the butter cream and 80g chopped walnuts: 1.

take your two cooled sponges at slice them in half horizontally- this should leave you with four even layers altogether (if you don’t feel like cutting them, just leave the cake as a classic sandwich variety with two larger layers).

2.

Take a big dollop of your butter cream and spread over one of the layers. Sprinkle with a generous helping of chopped walnuts. Repeat this with the remaining sponges until you reach the top- with this layer sift over some cocoa powder for a rustic finishing touch.

Enjoy!

By Tassy Goodall.

Simply whisk all the ingredients together until a thick butter cream is formed. Add a drop more milk if you prefer a creamier consistency.

BAKERS

Are you Thame’s best baker? Oxfordshire’s cake king or queen? The Big Thame Bake is now calling for entries as it looks for talented bakers everywhere to rise to the occasion for good local causes at this year’s Thame Food Festival (26th September 2015).

It’s your chance to shine and put your creativity to the test, with categories to charge your imagination whatever your baking skill or age. Enter now and you could be crowned a winner. Not only that, you could also win a fantastic prize and get to meet some of the biggest names in the world of baking, including Great British Bake Off’s Frances Quinn, Luis Troyano, Miranda Gore-Brown and patisserie legend Benoit Blin from Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, to name but a few. “With the launch of the Big Thame Bake, we’re throwing down the oven glove to bakers everywhere” says food writer and Big Thame Bake organiser Jane Hornby. “We’ve come up with ten great categories to stretch your abilities and give you the

FUNGAL NAILS, BE GONE! With Photodynamic Therapy.

Summer is on the way and it’s time to free your feet from socks and closed shoes. Many of you will be looking forward to wearing your sandals but there may be some who are less excited about the prospect of exposing their feet. The friendly team of Podiatrists at Feet First in Thame are qualified to treat a wide range of foot conditions to help you feel more confident in your summer shoes.

Hard Skin on the feet and in particular, the heels, should not be considered ‘normal’. If you have hard skin which frequently cracks and doesn’t seem to get any better even though you apply cream, the chances are you have a fungal infection known as Tinea Pedis or Athletes foot. Many people are aware of the condition arising between the little toes but it can affect the skin over the whole of the foot and cause embarrassing dry, flaky skin. When treated appropriately, the problem can be eliminated leaving you with nice healthy feet. There are, however, some medical conditions which can result in callus and should not be confused with Tinea Pedis. A Podiatrist will be able to diagnose and advise you of the best treatment. Fungal nails or onychomycosis is a common problem and the most common reason for people being embarrassed about their toenails, causing discolouration of the nail and dramatic visual changes, which can be unsightly. Feet First now offer an innovative new treatment for fungal nails called Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy (PACT Light Therapy). PACT involves the interaction of light, a photosensitive agent and oxygen to produce a local chemical effect. Fungal cells have a wall that will take up and respond to the photosensitive agent which is a blue dye. This dye is harmless to human cells but will stain the cell wall of the fungi. This stain now makes the fungi sensitive to a specific wavelength of light. Introducing light with the high powered PACT system attacks the cell wall of the fungus. Growth of the fungus is stopped and will cause the fungus to be destroyed. The photochemical reaction induces fungal cell death without affecting surrounding tissue meaning it is 100% completely safe. It is quick and pain free and is available without a doctor’s referral.

Head, Shoulders, Elbows & Hands With Jen Webster, Bowen Therapist

Recently I have seen an increase in clients suffering with upper body issues such as headaches, ‘frozen’ shoulders, ‘tennis’ elbows, ‘clicky’ wrists and joint pain in fingers and thumbs These concerns are common and result in frustrating debilitation for many suffers.

T

here can be many reasons for the onset of pain and restriction: maybe a fall, post traumatic stress, an illness, long distance driving, a sports injury, computer work, lifestyle stress, recent dental work, TMJ dysfunction, hormone fluctuations - the list is endless. This pain and restriction is real and clients will be very specific in reporting a specific concern, however, from my perspective I will need to address the full medical history and lifestyle of each individual. When left untreated these issues become chronic conditions resulting in pain, stiffness and loss of function. Clients report difficulty with daily activities such as sleeping, dressing, driving, using a kettle, carrying bags, lifting small children and so on.

How may Bowen Therapy help?

The careful and precise moves, which stimulate muscles and soft tissues, prompt the body to reset imbalances and start to heal injuries and chronic complaints. The experience of a treatment is gentle, subtle and relaxing. The body generally responds quickly to Bowen making it a very time and cost effective treatment

Your Good Health...

As a Bowen practitioner my job does not end with the hands on treatment and, in pursuit of a sustainable pain free existence, lifestyle adaptations and supportive ‘aids’ are discussed. My regular clients know the importance of drinking water, soaking in an epsom salt bath or using magnesium oil spray. Attention to posture, gentle stretching and removing mobile phones from pockets are just an example of the discussions we have.

JEN’S THERAPY UPDATE...

I have expanded my practice to incorporate the Neurostructural Integration Technique (NST) as an advanced practitioner. I have furthered this work with specialist Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and Hormonal certification. In my clinic recently it has been fascinating to see how TMJ dysfunction and hormonal imbalances (or both) can impede the resolution of chronic pain. Addressing these issues has enhanced and led to sustainable changes for many clients.

For further information please contact: Jen Webster (BSc, Cert ECBS, Adv NST, MBTPA, CNHC reg.), Bowen Therapist at The White House,Upper High Street, Thame.

Thai Massage

bringing a little summer holiday straight to Thame! By Lara Robert, Thame Therapy Clinic

In the bustling streets of Bangkok you will find dusty sun loungers dotted around almost everywhere, offering holiday makers a unique experience; the Thai national health service known as Thai massage. This eastern massage discipline is believed to keep you young, healthy and stable - a veritable cure all. Known as Nuat Phaen Thai in the Thai language it is believed to have been founded by Jivaka Komarabhacca (known as Shivago)who was reported as being doctor to the Buddha and the Buddhist community around 2500 years ago. Within the discipline the body is seen and respected as an ever-changing network of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual processes that all influence each other so the spiritual aspect of the treatment is seen as being important. It is believed that the body contains an internal energy or life force known as ‘Sen’ which flows along meridian lines similar to veins. Therefore, during a massage it is the therapist’s primary aim is to balance the body’s energy by stimulating it’s flow and removing any blockages (believed to be caused by trauma or disease).

you to relax in a more natural position. We also like to add in some atmospheric lighting and incense to transport you to the Bangkok we experienced; full of fantastical temples and deep, lingering, scents!

Physically it is a much deeper and more intense form of massage than many other massage therapies as it uses the therapist’s body weight to treat along the muscular structures, allowing for better reduction of muscular strain and tension. The unique yoga-like stretches within the therapy also help to work the joints relieving stiffness and improving mobility. Trigger points (‘knots’) can also be efficiently targeted during this massage, helping to address specific areas of concern. Dusty sun-loungers aside, the massage itself is performed fully dressed on a specially designed floor mat with a silk covering, as it is more traditionally done in Thailand, allowing

Safari at its best

BOTSWANA Botswana offers one of the most unique safari holiday experiences to be found in Africa. From the inhospitable deserts of the south to the sparkling waterways of the north west flood plains.

The

Okavango Delta floods every year as the rain flows down from the Angola foothills creating a vast network of islands and channels. Gliding silently in a ‘mokoro’ canoe along the waterways, it is possible to get close to animals that come to drink. Some areas of the delta are flooded at all times so activities in these areas are either by foot or by boat. On the periphery where there are tracts of dry land, game viewing can also be explored in a 4 x 4 vehicle - an excellent combination is a few nights at both types of game viewing camps. Areas such as Moremi Game Reserve on the edge of the delta offer some of the very best game viewing in the world, with all of the Big 5 animals. Accommodation in these areas tends to be in luxurious safari lodges, however it is possible to find smaller lodges that offer a good quality, affordable alternative and for the more adventurous, fully catered camping trips. Another safari region of Botswana is Chobe National Park. Often the starting point for visitors to Botswana, its close proximity to Victoria Falls makes it an ideal combination with a few nights either on the Zimbabwe or the Zambia side of the falls. Located in the north

eastern region of the country, Chobe is easy to reach by road or air. Most of the safari lodges are located along the banks of the Chobe River - a popular spot for animals to drink and near to vast herds of elephant and buffalo for which the region is famous. Less well known are the Makgadikgadi Salt pans and the Kalahari Desert. No less rewarding, the safari enthusiast can expect unusual animals such as meerkat, brown hyena and aardwolf. The barren landscape also hosts large ‘dazzles’ of zebra at certain times of the year and the famous black maned Kalahari lions. Botswana really does play host to safaris at their best. To find out more about holidaying in Botswana or any other part of the world, visit Traveltime at 6 High Street, Watlington. T: 01491 614614 E: watlington@traveltime.uk.net
