GET THE LOOK Stone Worktop Fuse Function & Flair
By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
K
itchens truly are the heart of a home – they are where bodies are fuelled, memories are created and cultures are shaped. Because of their importance, it can be difficult designing a kitchen, particularly combining practicality with beautiful design. One element which easily fuses function and flair is a stone worktop. But it can be overwhelming deciding what stone is best for your kitchen. So with our 25 years of experience, we’ve put together a simple guide.
Grantie:Non-porous, making it hygienic and stain resistant. Scratch and heat resistant (you can put pots straight from the hob or oven on to it). There are also vast design opportunities, for example, the shiny sapphire coloured Lemurian Blue, or the sandy grey Bianco Romano. Marble:Elegant and timeless in design. Heat resistant but slightly more porous than granite so is vulnerable to some staining (for example spices and beetroot) and some scratching. If treated with care, marble can look beautiful for many, many years.
Limestone:Generally limestone is known for being a softer stone, but some can be very hard. For example, Wild West Green from America, is non-porous, heat, stain and scratch resistant. Jura Blue and Jura Beige from Germany are similar to marble in their durability. Composite Quartz:Made from quartz held together by resin. They come in a huge range of
colours and patterns and each slab is uniform in look, compared to a natural stone. They are heat and stain resistant and largely scratch resistant too.non-porous, heat, stain and scratch resistant. Jura Blue and Jura Beige from Germany are similar to marble in their durability. For inspiration visit our website or showroom (in Stokenchurch) where you can look through our stones and take samples home with you. If you would like a FREE quote, email or bring us some measurements and a rough idea of the stone you would like.

NEWSin&our EVENTS region On Saturday 11th Junew, Masterchef champion 2013 Natalie Coleman was at The Book House in Thame to launch this year’s children’s competition for Thame Food Festival 2016.
Last year’s competition was a great success, involving
Thame’s three primary schools - John Hampden, St Joseph’s and Barley Hill. Last year’s winners joined Natalie to launch the competition and they had a lovely time meeting up with her again. Each of them were given the 10 questions and tie breaker for this year’s competition to take back to each of their schools for year’s 5/6 to enter. Patron Lotte Duncan said “We had a great time with Natalie, and she really enjoyed chatting to the girls. The Book House in Thame hosted the launch brilliantly and displayed some of their children’s cookery books for budding young cooks. This year’s winners will have a cookery book and the overall winner of the best tie breaker will have two to take home! Plus of course all three winners will have main prize to look forward to - joining Natalie up on stage to cook at Thame Food Festival.” Thame Food Festival, which takes place this year on Saturday 24th September, is a community event run by the community for the community. For more details, or to get involved by sponsoring or supporting next year’s festival, please visit www.thamefoodfestival.co.uk.

24hr Golf Challenge raises over £2,000 for local charity!
A 24 hour golf challenge hosted by Princes Risborough Golf Club on Saturday 7th until Sunday 8th of May was a complete success with six amateur golfers completing 26 miles, 144 holes and 8 rounds of 18. They were led by the Club Manager, Nick Shaw and together raised over £2000 for the local The Rural Community Defibrillator Group charity, which has been greatly received and will be used to place defibrillators in rural areas in order to save lives. The Challengers opted to wear garish and brightly coloured golf attire for the event which made for rapturous applause and laughter when they presented themselves! They set off at 11:45am and after a steady start, a few obligatory drinks at the beer festival seemed to speed up the pace as the sun went down. At 9pm, the daylight was gone and the golfers switched to the Night Golf equipment which posed a completely new experience with lit up balls and tee’s. A Family Fun day took place on the Sunday where visitors enjoyed local stalls, a bouncy castle and the opportunity to watch the challengers roll in on their last round. They putted the last hole at 11:45am and all looked rather weathered and exhausted as they were handed a well-earned drink.

Can Acupuncture help me quit smoking...?
Stopping smoking is essentially a battle to overcome nicotine addiction and the stress that goes with it. Since Acupuncture is known, anecdotally at least, as an effective method for dealing with stress, many people use it to stop smoking. Here, Andy Roscoe, an Acupuncturist at Thame Therapy Clinic explains how it works. There is no research evidence to confirm the effectiveness of acupuncture to quit smoking, but over the many years of treating nicotine addicts I know that seeing an Acupuncturist can be an important part in helping stay the course. Initially the key issue is to overcome chemical addiction. This usually lasts 2-3 weeks and in this period I would usually treat twice a week, with an affordable fee structure. Treatment would usually involve press-stud ear plasters to take away and advice on calming teas. If the will to stop is there, then Acupuncture will help deal with about 70% of the stress. The rest is up to the individual.
lead to smoking in the first place. Apart from Acupuncture treatment I would also give lifestyle advice about diet and exercise, and generally work out a strategy to deal with aspects of life that feel stressful. Having emotional and practical support and a regular check-in to maintain momentum can make all the difference when we need to make changes in our life.
Thereafter the main issue usually revolves around the emotional and mental repercussions of staying free of nicotine, including some of the issues that may have If you are interested in trying Acupuncture or Homeopathy call Thame Therapy Clinic on 01844

Hearing Aids
keeping you young We realise that people avoid wearing hearing aids for as long as possible – because they feel that they ‘age them’. The truth is – it is not the hearing aids that age people it is the affect of the hearing loss that makes people appear older. It therefore makes much more sense to proactively address the hearing loss and wear properly fitted hearing technology than go through life not hearing.
P
eople wait on average seven years after noticing a hearing loss to start wearing hearing aids. Although hearing instruments can drastically improve people’s social interactions and quality of life, many are reluctant to begin to use them. For many years, deafness was poorly understood and treated with little compassion or understanding. Although attitudes have greatly improved in recent years, some people still feel ashamed of their hearing loss and go to great lengths to hide it, including refusing to wear hearing devices that would be extremely beneficial to them. Often, perceived stigma can be the biggest hurdle to overcome. A person with hearing loss may feel that others will judge them negatively for wearing hearing aids, however this is very often not the case, and their reluctance comes from their own self-perception rather than any societal stigma. Recent studies have shown that negative associations with hearing aids have almost completely disappeared. However, for many people there are still barriers in coming to terms with the fact that they have hearing loss, and then in accepting the need for hearing aids. Hearing loss is seen as a sign of aging, meaning that people are often unwilling to accept that it is happening to them. Although hearing does deteriorate as we age, it is far from just a problem associated with older people. Many people are born with some hearing loss, and noisy environments such as factories and concerts can damage young people’s hearing. Now 1 in 6 of us have some form of hearing loss, and as it becomes more prevalent and more is known about it, the stigma is decreasing all the time. Modern technology has also helped to reduce the stigma of wearing hearing aids. People are now used to seeing Bluetooth devices in people’s ears, along with headphones for listening to music or noise protection plugs for noisy environments. Hearing aids are no longer exceptionally noticeable, nor do people immediately associate a device in the ear with having a hearing problem. In any situation, a hearing loss is far more visible than a hearing aid. Choosing to aid your hearing allows you to stay active and maintain a busy work or social life, which will make you feel and appear younger. If you would like an informal discussion about your situation, an assessment of your hearing or to trial a pair 01844 396057 (Thame) of hearing aids, please get in touch with Aston Hearing, based in Amersham and Thame 01494 733840 (Amersham)

Eliminate
RSI With Bowen Therapy
I would like to share a testimonial written by Ellie, a lovely young and talented musician. Ellie works as a music therapist. I have been treating Ellie since May 2014 - we had 3 sessions within a month, since then I have seen her regularly, monthly for a while and now every 6 weeks or so.
Ellie reported:
I heard about Jen and Bowen though her local advertising in LOOK LOCAL and decided to see if this type of treatment could help me. I cannot explain the relief I felt when I met Jen and we began to work together; I realised that my injury could be treated in a way that would enable me to continue with my job and music; which I have spent my whole life working towards. Jen really listened to me and not only focused on my injury but me as a person. I started to feel relief in my left hand and arm almost immediately, and finally felt like I had some control over my injury rather
than it being the other way round. I was able to sustain treatment at home through remedies and instructions from Jen, which helped if I felt things were becoming difficult in-between sessions. Thanks to Jen, I have had almost no RSI flare ups in over a year, and I find that playing instruments, carrying equipment, driving and generally using my arm and hand is not causing me any problems. I have found sustainable, effective and consistent way to cope with my injury and improve my general health. To think that 18 months ago I was coming to terms with the possibility of having to change my career and give up my passion due to RSI and spending a lot of time in pain. This seems really distant now. I have actually increased my workload, and have performed at more festivals and gigs than ever before this summer! Bowen really works for me, and I am so grateful to all the wonderful work Jen has done; she has enabled me to continue living a happy life”. Jen comments: Please contact me if you think there are issues preventing you from leading a fulfilling life; these may be in regard to life style ‘demands’ and may include: physically/ mentally demanding work, sports training, pain, chronic health issues, pre and post surgery, trauma, hormone issues, pre and post natal care.

Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.
I first started seeing Jen after suffering from a particularly bad flare up of repetitive strain injury (RSI) in my left hand and arm. I am a music therapist and also write and perform my own music as well as being in a band, and over the years have developed several problems as a result of the amount of time spent using musical instruments, lifting heavy equipment and driving long distances frequently. This particular flare up resulted in having to immobilise my left arm for one week and was followed by an NHS referral to physiotherapy. My doctor told me that unless I changed something these flareups would become a permanent state. Whilst the physiotherapy was useful, I recognised that it was not addressing the long-term implications of my injury and I was left facing a very serious and devastating decision about whether I would have to give up my job and be able to continue with music.

MOTORING : in the spotlight... The All New FIAT TIPO Reviewed by Tim BarnesClay, Motoring Journalist. I have a soft spot for Fiat. Okay, I’m mean to be objective – but you always remember your first car, right? And mine was a Fiat Panda. There’s no logic involved here – it’s pure emotion – and so, for me, the Fiat brand is synonymous with 1988 and my glorious first days of true motoring independence.
T
he same year I got that Panda, a new Fiat was unleashed – the Tipo. The five-door hatch was boxy but appealed to the media and the masses, winning the European Car of the Year award in 1989. Sadly, the adoration didn’t last and the Fiat Tipo went to the great scrapyard in the sky when it was replaced by the Fiat Bravo and Brava in ‘95. Fast forward to the present day and the brand new Fiat Tipo is back from the dead and aims to replicate the early success of the former model. If truth be told, the Fiat Tipo is no stranger to being brought back to life – the moniker was first seen on cars over 100 years ago. And in 2016, Fiat is determined to keep the name going again by going down the Dacia-esque value-for-money route. The Italian auto-maker is blunt about its intentions: the all-new Fiat Tipo is a car without frills and, even though it’s more or less emulating Dacia’s marketing strategy, its real competitor is the likes of the Skoda Rapid Spaceback. Now, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the all-new Fiat Tipo is, in my opinion, better looking than the Czech-made car. This is due to its elegant nose design, and neater overall shape. The Fiat Tipo’s price begins from a remarkably low £12,995 on the road, which is bound to shake up the British motoring market. The fresh Fiat Tipo is hitting our shores in September in five-door hatchback and ‘Station Wagon’ (estate) guises. The body forms are indistinguishable from the rear doors forward and the outside of the Tipo really doesn’t ooze ‘budget’ by any means. It’s only when you step inside that the ‘no frills’ element kicks-in. Some of the all-new Fiat Tipo’s switchgear is from the Fiat 500 range’s parts bin – as is the steering wheel. These components of the car feel good to the touch – it’s the plastics at knee-height on the doors and the dash that give the game away. The synthetic material is so cheap that it sounds hollow and scratches if you run your fingernails lightly over it. But, as with many things in life, there’s light and shade – and the Fiat Tipo’s factory-fitted kit tips the car back into the good books. All 2016 Fiat Tipo models receive six airbags, electric windows, DAB digital radio, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Behind the wheel, it’s evident that the all-new Fiat Tipo has been put
24
@carwriteups
together so that it delivers comfort over everything else. Its soft suspension enables the car to sail over pot holes without any discomposure in the cabin. Point the all-new Fiat Tipo’s nose into a corner rapidly, though, and body roll is perceptible. The well-weighted steering helps to make up for this slightly, but it still doesn’t make you feel as connected with the tarmac as you’d like to be. From a power point of view, the all-new Fiat Tipo’s 1.6-litre oil-burning unit is nothing exceptional, but the car’s sixspeed manual transmission impresses with its positive-shift action. In lower gears lag is obvious and, while it’s a quiet cruiser, things become rowdy from 3,000rpm onwards. All things considered, the all-new Fiat Tipo is mediocre to drive and its cabin quality isn’t the best. But it does look good; it has bags of room; it’s comfortable, it comes loaded with kit and represents good value for money.

on the Mic... Emusic
very month we will be focussing on particular groups or events in the area and finding out more about our local musicians. In this issue we are going to focus This month we are going to focus on Jonny Spruce, a fantastic local guitarist, singer and sound technician. .
Q: How did your interest in music start?
A
: I started playing classical guitar in primary school, but always found it difficult to motivate myself to practice between lessons. That changed however when I got to secondary school and formed a ‘metal’ band with a group of mates – we all loved getting together and making a lot of noise, regardless of how good we were! I’ve been in bands and playing music ever since.
Q: Who influenced you musically?
A
: As stereotypical as it sounds, I’m a big big fan of Ed Sheeran. He writes his lyrics in such a beautiful, poetic way, and his guitar playing isn’t half bad either. Apart from that I love anything from classics such as Oasis to artists in the charts today such as Calvin Harris and Sia.
Q
: How did you get involved with the First Thursday Music Club?
A
: I first got involved with the FTMC three or four years ago, as a kind of ‘work experience’ so that I could help out and learn how to be a sound technician. Years later and I’m still there doing the sound and even playing occasionally! I think it’s one of the best Open Mic Nights in the country thanks to the passion of all those involved, and the community around it, and I’m very proud to be a part of it.
Q A
:What are you involved in locally?
: At the FTMC we have just launched a new event called the Songwriter Showcase, which is a really great chance to really listen to a local artist perform the songs they have written. They talk through the meaning and inspiration of each song and it’s a really great event to be
involved with. I also help run the Three Horseshoes Open Mic Night in Towersey on the last Thursday of each month, which is always a really nice relaxed environment for beginners to play at. I have also helped run the Crash (acoustic) stage at Music in the Park, a charity event in Thame, each year, and it’s always a great day out.
Q
: What are the most memorable performances in your musical career so far?
A
: Two performances have always stuck with me – when I was 16 my band at the time was booked to play at New Year’s Eve party. It was the most crazy, fun experience I think I’ve ever had in a band. Everyone was drunk and dancing and singing along at the top of their voices, and it made all of the hard work up to that point worth it. The flipside of that however was a small local gig we played in the middle of winter the next year. It was so cold I couldn’t even feel my guitar strings and I remember wondering how we were ever going to make it through the gig! We managed somehow but I’ve sworn never to play in sub-zero temperatures again! (Sorry Alaska)
Q A
: How did you get involved with Tay O’lay?
: John Reid-Hansen, the leader of Tay O’lay, was my guitar teacher for a number of years, and he really helped me to get to the standard I am at today. He was always pushing me to try new things, so when Tay O’lay had a gig coming up and the bass player couldn’t make it, I was drafted in to help. I guess I did a good enough job because I’m still playing with them years later!

Coffee Break
The Time Traveler’s Wife
– by Audrey Niffenegger
Published in 2004, Niffenegger’s debut work has become an international best-seller.
In 1991 20-year-old Claire is an artist who makes paper sculptures for a living. She bumps into 28-year-old Henry, a librarian at the local library. He has never met her before, but Claire has known him all her life; for Henry is not an ordinary man. He was born with a genetic disorder which causes him to time travel. He has no control over it, and cannot predict how long he will stay in one time. He jumps around his own timeline and experiences events in his own history. So, on this day in 1991 when he and Claire meet, she becomes a part of his experiences and therefore his timeline. He begins to travel within her life and their ‘first’ encounter is when Claire is just 6 years old. Over his many ‘visits’ as she grows into adulthood they form a close relationship and eventually fall in love. Written in the first person this novel alternates between Henry and Claire. We follow Claire’s timeline chronologically, with a note at the start of each chapter reminding us how old they each are at that point. Henry’s age does of course jump around. Niffenegger wanted to create the perfect soulmate. If that is what Henry is then it explains why Claire spends her life waiting for him to appear in hers. It raises the question of whether a brief moment of pure happiness is worth the pain when that moment is over.
