In the spotlight... New Mazda CX-5
MOTORING
Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.
The Japanese-made CX-5 has always been a handsome motor. So, it’s no shocker that because of its mix of style, driving dynamics and economy, the car has seen 1.5 million sales internationally.
M
azda’s design crew had its work cut out to perfect something that, quite honestly, didn’t need perfecting further. But, what they’ve done is sharpen up the SUV, so everything looks tauter and fresher. It’s more than just a beautification, though - improvements have been applied all over. And that involves an all-new cabin. The 2017 CX-5 features a lower roofline and smoother sides. These changes accentuate its posture and erudite proportions. Inside, Mazda has fused scrupulous cockpit ergonomics with a chic, sizable cabin. Born out of the Japanese car-maker’s ‘Jinba-Ittai’ car-anddriver-as-one belief, the latest CX-5 offers fresh stratums of comfort and driver engagement. Test-driving the 2.2 150ps 2WD Sport Nav Auto, it’s clear Mazda has also cut vibration and clamour within the cabin. I drove the new model in raindrenched Inverness – and the SUV managed to subdue the sound of the deluge, which went on for 24 hours, solid. Even though I saw some car accidents, undoubtedly caused by aquaplaning, I was able to push the Mazda CX-5 enough to note the SUV’s handling precision is better than ever. In some ways, the wet weather was a blessing, as the Scotch mist forced us to fully concentrate on the test drive, rather than gawp like tourists at the Cairngorms. Because of that, we even became conscious of the CX-5’s stiffer body rigidity, (15 per cent firmer than the first-generation car).
All 2017 CX-5s are furnished well, with interior kit, such as dual-zone climate control, DAB radio and a touch-screen display with sat-nav. The Sport Nav trim adds an eight-way electrically alterable driver’s seat, a reversing camera, and smart keyless entry. A heated steering wheel and heated front seats are also a bonus. But I’ve saved the best bit of tackle for last – the Sport Nav features a head-up display that shines information onto the windscreen - and it includes Traffic Sign Recognition. This is great, as it keeps you firmly engrossed on the road ahead – something I needed to be, considering the squally weather north of the border. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t look at the new Mazda CX-5, if you’re in the market for a compact SUV.
PRO’s & CON’s Apperance
Handling
Comfort
Equipment
Could be quicker
But, the way the 2017 Mazda CX-5 drives is far more enchanting and comfy, due to the introduction of G-Vectoring Control (GVC). This essentially imitates the weight-transfer methods racing car drivers employ. It makes road cars piloted by average folk, like you and me, handle like they’re in the hands of a pro-driver. But it’s not all about the driver – GVC makes your passengers feel more chilled.
Max speed: 124mph
The 2.2 150ps 2WD Sport Nav Auto is just so easy-going to drive. The 0-62mph time is 10.1secs, and the top speed of 124mph is more than adequate. Perhaps more crucially, you can also expect over 50mpg on an average run, while CO2 productions are 147g/km.

GET THE LOOK Questions you may forget to ask when choosing your natural stone worktop. By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
You’re renovating your kitchen and have decided to invest
in a natural stone worktop – they’re stylish, beautiful and hardwearing. You’ve spent weeks contemplating cupboard colours, selecting your stone and deliberating all those design details. But you’re not there yet. We’ve thought about those final questions you should ask before you give your worktop the go ahead
Where will the joins be? - If your project requires more than one length of stone – which is highly likely in a kitchen – check where your stone mason plans on creating the joins. Maybe they planned to put them either side of your sink but you’d prefer them to be hidden around the hob where there’s less light. What surface finishes does the stone come in? - Not many people know that granites and marbles, and all other natural stones, don’t just come with highly polished, shiny surfaces. There are often options for matte finishes or even varying degrees of flame brushed. Where does the stone come from? - Finding out the origin of your stone means you not only get to show-off about how exotic your worktop is, but it can also be an indication of quality. For example, a charcoal veined white marble from Italy will be far better quality than one from China. How should I care for my stone? - Different natural stones have different care needs, and these needs fit in to different lifestyles – some stones need more attention than others. For example granites are very durable, so wiping them down with an everyday kitchen spray is fine, whereas marble is more sensitive - avoid bleaches and hard chemicals. Also some stones expose marks and crumbs more than others. These details are useful to know when deciding which stone will slot in to your lifestyle best.

did your interest in music Q: How start?
: A
My family aren’t musical at all so it seems amazing that I got drawn into this industry. I just found myself as a kid being really interested in making new sounds. I think if I had to put it down to a certain time in my life it would have been in my first years at lower school when we had music lessons at school and a teacher “Miss Stewart” who was really passionate about music. We often got put into groups and asked to write a song. I naturally went to the keyboard and loved every minute of it. My enjoyment of music continued from there and developed even further when I finally managed to get my own keyboard at home. And so the story began.
Tell us about your first live Q:performance? A:
When I was 17, I was sat around with a group of friends, when one of them said he was learning to play the guitar and then suggested we start a band. So we did and believe it or not that band is still going today, although not doing much. In those days we called ourselves “Canto” which was a randomly picked word from a dictionary. We set out just doing it for fun, which was probably a good thing as we were awful, but we spent around a year practising and bringing in a couple of other friends that were better musicians than us until we got to a point that we weren’t half bad. By this point I had also joined the fire service and the fire station I was on also in those days, had a social club. They wanted to put an event on there and suggested that our band play. So with a little convincing and through all the nerves we took the plunge and played our first gig. The night went really well. It wasn’t a massive gig probably a 60 strong audience but we were well received and it became the first of many gigs to follow.
us about Blackfrog Studios Q: Tell and how it started? A:
Playing in the band, we have used many studios over the years and worked with many producers. I’ve always found the
whole recording process fascinating and sometimes frustrating when working with other producers, so 15 years ago I decided to have a go myself. I bought a little 24 track digital all in one recording desk, originally just to record my own band. But I took to it quickly, really enjoyed it and before long was being asked to record other friends in my little basement studio. It didn’t take long before I outgrew the space, so when I moved house I build a studio with a separate ‘Live’ and ‘Mixing’ Room. When building the original studio we had to lift some slabs up and under one of these slabs was a totally black (and what looked cremated) frog. In my strange way, I leant over to have a good look when the frog jumped in the air causing me to do the same thing, to which my guitarist, Jef Oriley, found highly amusing and said “there you go, you now have name” and shortly afterwards gave me a small sign for the studio saying ‘Blackfrog Studios’. That sign still hangs outside the front door of the current studio today. Work picked up, I got busier and when my son came along it was time to move the studio out of the house, so we rented a unit in Station Yard in Thame which became the studio for the following 4 years before we moved to our current location in Jefferson Way. The studio now offers Recording and Rehearsal Services to local and national bands, singers and musicians along with Voice-Overs and Recording Studio Experiences for everyone of any age, including Children’s Parties and Hen & Stag Parties, giving people the chance to be a pop star in a professional studio. The studio in Jefferson way has a large rehearsal room with a full back line and PA for rehearsal, in addition to the recording facilities including a Vocal Booth and impressive Mixing Room. For more information about Blackfrog Studios visit www.blackfrogstudios.co.uk
: Tell us about your label? Q A:
BFS Record (Blackfrog Studios Records) came around in 2012. We see ourself as a ‘stepping-stone-label’ and we aim to provide our acts with everything that they need to develop their talent and get noticed by a major label. We currently have some great acts signed to the label.

COMPETITION
a PAIR of TICKETS to the new MIDSOMER TOUR in Thame T
hame is one of the most frequently used filming locations for the popular ITV series Midsomer Murders. It regularly features as Causton or as one of the many villages in ‘Midsomer County’. Many Thame landmarks have been featured, including the Town Hall, Market House, Rumsey’s Chocolaterie, the Swan, Black Horse, and Spread Eagle hotels. Thame’s cricket ground and Prebendal House were filmed recently for further episodes. Midsomer Murders is still going strong after 20 years with regular screenings in the UK and round the world. Sarah Osborne of Tourism Angles, Midsomer tourism specialists, says, ‘Midsomer Murders is one of our biggest TV exports – it’s watched by 6.5 million people in the UK and millions more in over 100 countries. People see the show on TV and want to come and visit the beautiful towns and villages of Midsomer.’ New in Thame are weekly Midsomer walking tours, taking in many of the filming locations, led by specially trained Midsomer guides. Tony Long, tour coordinator, said, ‘These new tours developed from a tour originally created by David Dodds of Thame Museum. They’re being held under the auspices of 21st Century Thame, an organisation bringing local businesses, community groups and councils together to keep Thame vibrant, following a successful Midsomer Workshop last year, which recommended various Midsomer promotional ventures including the tours.The tours last about an hour and take place weekly between May and October, alternating between Saturdays at 2.30pm and Wednesdays at 11.00am. They start from inside Thame Museum (79 High Street, Thame, OX9 3AE), one of the filming locations. These tours will add a new facet to tourism locally, attracting more visitors from the UK and overseas to our historic town.’ To be in with a chance to WIN, simply email (competitions@look-localmagazine.co.uk) the answer to this question along with your contact details before the closing date;
Q: HOW MANY PEOPLE WATCH MIDSOMER MURDERS ON TV IN THE UK? Three winners will be selected at random from all correct entries and notified after the closing date of 31.07.17.

Whether you suffer from car, boat or plane sickness, there is a great combination homeopathic remedy, that will help: Cocculus / Petroleum / Tabacaum 30c. Take 1 pill every 10 – 60 minutes depending on the intensity of the symptoms.
Jet-Lag
Helios* makes a combination remedy Arnica / Electricitas / Rad Brom 30c. Put a couple of pills in a bottle of water once you have passed security, and sip.
Diarrhoea & Vomiting
Though there are many Homeopathic remedies for diarrhoea and vomiting, the number one is Arsenicum Album 30c. The clues that you need this remedy are that besides the diarrhoea and/ or vomiting, you will feel weak and chilly, and perhaps a little anxious. If however, your symptoms are the result of over-indulgence with rich food and alcohol, then take Nux Vomica 30c: The hangover miracle cure!
Insect Bites & Jellyfish Stings
Whether it’s a mosquito bite, a bee sting or some other insect bite – the number one homeopathic remedy for insect bites that become red, hot, swollen and itchy is Apis 30c. The two other important remedies are Urtica Urens and Ledum. Take in 30c. Apis and Urtica are also very good for jellyfish stings.

Nobody wants their summer holiday ruined due to a sudden bout of diarrhoea or sickness. One of the best ways to be healthy on holiday is to strengthen your system before you go, by eating and sleeping well. High vitality means high resistance to illness. But, sometimes our lives are so hectic that by the time we reach our holiday destination we are stressed and exhausted leaving us more susceptible to infection. In this article, Jill Roarty, a Homeopathy Practitioner at Thame Therapy Clinic, offers advice on some homeopathic remedies that can help should you get ill whilst travelling.
Hello...
AdvancedSportsLtd
It’s all happening at ASL over the next two months. As summer approaches fast, we turn our attention to the various courses we have running throughout the summer holidays! Whilst it is difficult to keep the children entertained and enthusiastic, we at ASL work hard to create fun and enjoyable activities whilst ensuring they still involve an ‘educational’ element. By Craig Faulconbridge, Director, Advanced Sports Ltd
O
ur Holiday Courses are a popular and great choice for children, aged 4 to 11, who want to enjoy sporting activities, with their friends, in a safe and productive environment. Each course is specifically designed for each location, children and time of the year. Designed for boys and girls of all abilties, the children can get involved with a vast selection of activities from the moment they arrive to the time they leave. As you can see below, something is happening each week of the holidays round at Mill Lane and Whites Field as we continue to provide the most comprehensive and affordable service
throughout Chinnor and the local community! Each week we aim to offer different activities with a ‘Fair Ground’ theme each Friday, giving parents and carers the opportunity to take part in the activities with their children. Early bird opportunities are available until early July, so keep an eye on our website for updates!

New Technology Technology has moved on so far in recent years, and just as our mobile phones have become smaller, shinier, and more advanced than ever before, huge developments have also been made for hearing aids. We are really excited by all the advantages for users that this new generation of hearing aids offers, including: Cosmetics For those looking for a discreet device, there are now more options than ever before. Phonak Titanium is the manufacturer’s smaller ever custom product, and for behind-the-ear styles, Unitron’s Moxi Now is the smallest to date. With these tiny but powerful devices, you can have both the look and the performance to meet your needs. Customisation New technology makes it possible to find your perfect fit in both comfort and sound. Advanced data logging systems inside the hearing devices analyse your sound environment, helping your audiologist with fine tuning. With ongoing support to ensure the aids keep meeting your needs, we can turn the technology into a truly customised product. Connectivity Your hearing aids can now fit seamlessly into your busy lifestyle by pairing with other technology, giving you more control than ever before. You can use Bluetooth technology to stream sounds from the television directly to your aids, use made for iPhone devices such as GN Resound’s Linx range or Starkey Halo, or you can download apps which turn your phone into a hearing aid remote. With the possibilities that connectivity brings, we can be excited about the future of hearing technology. We no longer need to think of hearing aids as a medical device – they are now a part of all the technology we use every day to keep us connected to the outside world.
Conversation Often the biggest challenge for people with a hearing loss is following conversations in noisy environments. Today’s hearing devices use directional microphones and minimise intrusive background noise to help you to stay connected even in the most challenging listening environments. The Oticon Opn offers a new approach, preserving speech in all directions rather than focusing on one single speaker, creating a natural sound. With your hearing device, you can keep up in any situation, whether you are in a boardroom, hall or busy restaurant, enjoying conversations comfortably and easily. Convenience At Aston Hearing, we recognise that you never stop relying on your hearing. We aim to supply convenient products that fit into your lifestyle, such as new rechargeable hearing aids from Phonak and Unitron, as well as an excellent service tailored to you. Our prices also include a manufacturer warranty, batteries and filters, wax removal to keep your ears clear and any appointments you may need to ensure your peace of mind. We are open 6 days per week in Thame and have a 24/7 hotline should you need our support. Confidence By taking control of your hearing, and using technology to maximise its potential, you can approach life with confidence. With advanced products and excellent service, we aim to give you the tools to empower yourself and make the most of your hearing. With so much innovation across the industry, it can be difficult to choose which device or manufacturer would suit you best. As we are independent, our audiologists will always make an informed, impartial choice for a hearing instrument that best suits your personal situation, and you can try more than one if it is not suited. We also offer a 60-day trial period with as many appointments as necessary to ensure that the devices perform to their full capabilities, as well as ongoing care to help you to continue to make the most of your technology.

Money set aside for a funeral does not have to be spent on the funeral. Although your executors have a duty to carry out the funeral, they are not obliged to spend any money you may have saved for that purpose. Funeral expenses are the first debt upon your estate, but settling your estate may take some time, and the funeral director will expect to be paid long before your executors are in a position to pay. A deposit in a bank or building society is simply money - it does not guarantee what type of funeral will be provided and it may not be enough when the time comes. On the other hand, you may even set aside more than you need too.
