Where is our summer? As I’m sitting here writing this whilst listening to the rain pelt down on my garden office roof my thoughts turn to the impending summer holidays.... I truly hope things improve before the schools break up later this month as being stuck inside the house for too long with a sassy 5 year old girl and 18 month old boy, whose favourite pass time is destroying everything in his wake, can only lead to severe cabin fever. However, if we are destined for a monsoon summer then all is not lost, as there’s always Den Building, which can actually be great fun in the rain as well as indoors. Turn to page 22 for inspiration on creating your perfect secret hideaway with your little rascals.

Best buys for your bathroom...
M
ore and more people are sacrificing bedroom space to make room for a large bathroom. These spaces are not only incredibly stylish but well thought out, offering practical designs that fit in to our busy lifestyles. We want both a shower for efficiency and a bath for escaping the demands of our days, along with his and her sinks to cut down the morning bathroom queue. But curating the perfect mixture of function and flair can be overwhelming, particularly as the bathroom is not a space we want to regularly renovate. Here are three bathroom features we think are worth considering when creating a beautifully practical space. GRANITE VANITY TOP – The sink is the most used feature in the bathroom. So you want it surrounded by something durable and easy to clean. Granite is non-porous so won’t get water marked easily and grime can be wiped away. It comes in a huge number of textures and designs but would fit particularly well in an industrial styled space. As vanity tops rarely use a huge amounts of stone, you can often pick from off-cuts by visiting your local stone mason. This is not only great for your wallet but also using un-used stone is great for the environment. MARBLE SHOWER TRAY - Marble bathrooms are a welcomed holiday luxury. That feeling of marble beneath your feet, a rainforest shower head up above and the smell of fancy body wash– bliss. So why wait until your next holiday for that feeling under your feet? Choosing marble for your shower tray will not only create a feeling of luxury, but it’s also a practical choice. Marble is easy to clean, particularly if sealed properly by your stone mason. It’s also a very classic bathroom material that has been stylish for centuries. SLATE FLOOR TILES – Slate is another incredibly strong stone that’s easy to look after, it’s stain resistant and naturally waterproof. Choosing a flame brushed textured slate will make it slip resistant which is great for families. It also comes in a variety of grey shades making it easy to style with a number of looks. Visit Coulon Stone’s Showroom in Stokenchurch for ideas and inspiration on creating your perfect bathrooom retreat.

Ask the Expert... This month’s question put to Rupert Hilton (MCIOB, AssocRICS, MScCHE, BA(Hons) via the Look Local Magazine facebook page is:
Q. Can I paint the Front Door of my Grade II Listed House?
The short answer to this question is yes, the real question though is would it require listed building consent? To answer this – as with any other planning related matter – we must once again define what makes the building in question special and enter the murky world of ‘heritage value’ and ‘significance’. The Planning, Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas Act (1990) Section 7 states: ‘..no person shall execute or cause to be executed any works for the demolition of a listed building or for its alteration or extension in any manner which would affect its *character as a building of special architectural or historic interest, unless the works are authorised.’ It doesn’t however make any reference to ‘repairs’* and generally it is accepted that maintenance and repair on a like-for-like basis does not required listed building consent (*Please note that neither
SAME DAY SKIP HIRE AND
GRAB SERVICE
‘character’ or ‘repair’ are defined in the legislation – which is where a lot of confusion comes from and why decisions often vary depending on the level of knowledge of the conservation officer).
So, the question you must ask yourself is would painting the door affect the building’s special architectural or historic interest? 9.5 times out of 10 on a grade II listed domestic property the answer is no - though there are buildings which retain particularly important or rare doors. I would normally encounter this issue on grade II* and I listed buildings. My personal view is that as long as you’re not using a paint that might damage the door or is in some way irreversible, then you should be fine. Colour is also ephemeral and subjective – the colour palettes used by the Georgians and Victorians look very garish to our tastes, but this doesn’t make them wrong - and British eccentricity is something we should all cherish.

Tips
R
egardless of whether you’ve decided to go green to help the environment, to save money, or just to see how easy it is, every step you take towards eco-friendly living is one that helps the world. If you’re just starting out and want some sustainable living ideas then here are a few to get you started: Turn it off
Energy conservation is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. Leaving your electricals on standby needlessly uses up energy – hit the off switch and you could see huge improvements, most noticeably in your energy bills!
Invest in eco-friendly technology
Want to go further than simply turning it off? Make sure that the tech you have got is as energyefficient as possible. This way, you’re using much less energy for the time that the product is on, saving money, and reducing your energy output.
Don’t waste food
Waste not, want not. Did you know that 7.3 million tonnes of food is wasted in the UK every year? This isn’t just a huge waste of food and money, it adds to the amount of CO2 being created in landfills.
Compost
If you have let your food go that little bit too far past its ‘best by’ then you need to be sure to compost it rather than putting it in the bin. Not only will this help create a natural fertiliser and keep your garden green, it’ll also reduce the amount of waste going to landfill - and as it won’t break down anaerobically, there will not be a build-up of methane gas.
Recycle everything
Chances are that if you’re thinking about taking on a more eco-friendly lifestyle then you’ll already be recycling. But could you improve your recycling-ability (now a word)? You can recycle almost everything, from batteries to paper to cars. Before you throw it away, take a minute to find out if you could recycle it instead.
Try to cut out plastic
Plastic seems to have found its way into every single aspect of our lives. However, giving it up isn’t as difficult as you might think – bring a canvas bag with you when you go shopping, buy your fruit and veg loose and stop buying bottled water.
Fix it, don’t throw it
Repairing or fixing something is more environmentally friendly than simply throwing things away, although the latter may seem easier and cheaper sometimes. The internet gives you access to the tools and information you need to fix practically anything!

The 50plus – Independence in your Home H
ow we as a country fund support for the elderly is very much in the news at the moment. Political debate has included a hastily backtracked ‘death tax’ and currently includes: •
Considering funding a universal care entitlement with a potential privately funded ‘care supplement’
•
Insurance to pay for improved service levels
•
Taxing or making the winter fuel allowance means tested
•
Reduced or no free television licences
•
Increased National Insurance charges
It’s a politically difficult area but with finite local government budgets and increasing demand it is clear that answers must be sought. A government ‘green paper’ is long overdue. We can debate the age at which one becomes ‘elderly’ but in reality one is as old as one feels. However just about everyone agrees that being in your own home is the best bet given normal circumstances. At The 50plus we are increasingly providing support for the elderly at home and last year introduced a service package designed to assist with this. The 50plus Independence In Your Home service provides a broad range of adaptation, maintenance and improvement options to
the home for the elderly for easier and improved comfort. For more information; Visit: www.the50plus.co.uk, Call: 01494 784448 Email: enquiries@the50plus.co.uk

NEWS & EVENTS in our region Thame Food Festival is supporting even more local charities this year, including the local Foodbank – Sharing Life Trust Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th September
T
hame Food Festival is building on the phenomenal success of last year. Local charities raised thousands of pounds last year, and this year will see an even more extensive line-up. As a Community Interest Company (CIC) Thame Food Festival is a notfor-profit organisation that has long endeavoured to support local charities. This is obviously alongside its core goal of supporting artisan producers and promoting British food. Each year it seeks to grow the festival, but keep strong roots in the local and national food community and this year this will include creating more of an overall visitor experience and in turn supporting more charities. A significant addition will be to include the local foodbank which was set up by Sharing Life Trust about 15 years ago. Although in many ways, Thame and its surrounding villages are seen as an affluent community, many individuals, couples and families are in financial difficulties or really struggle. This is why the foodbank was originally established and run by a small team of volunteers. Sadly demand for their services is increasing and therefore as Thame Food Festival has a natural food relationship the organisers were keen to use the event to promote and support this good cause. This will involve a drop off and display area, plus the opportunity for stall holders at the end of the second day to donate any produce they don’t want to take back. The foodbank will also be joined by what is becoming a traditional part of the line-up - all the canine frolics and delights of the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People demonstrations and the ever popular Dog Show. Plus Thomley in Worminghall will be featuring again with an even bigger dedicated Children’s Activity Area to make sure everyone, including the littlest foodies are sure to have a great time. In addition, Aylesbury Vale Diabetes, who provide practical, life-enhancing education and information and support, will also be joining over the two days to run activities and raise funds for this crucial cause. As Lotte Duncan, Patron and Organiser of Thame Food Festival says, “While the festival has always obviously had its focus on food, we have been extremely proud to assist many of the wonderful good work that local charities do. And this year we are able to support even more than ever, while also giving them an opportunity to publicise and raise their awareness.” For more information about Thame Food Festival, visit www.thamefoodfestival.co.uk.

Summer Holiday Fun
DEN-BUILDING
create memories that will last a lifetime I
f you could distil childhood into a single activity, it would probably be den-building. Most kids love it, be it scavenging building materials from forest debris, to stacking chairs back-toback and raiding the airing cupboard for linen. Den-building is also a great family activity. It requires teamwork and communication and is a good way to spend quality time together be it outside or better still, inside on a rainy day. Even the smallest children can gather leaves, or cushions if you’re indoors, and add decorations. But essentially, all a den needs is a frame and a cover. Planning is everything though. What materials are available? The beach will provide different building materials to the forest, or the sitting room. Think about how you’ll support the roof. If it all collapses, don’t stress, what have you learned? Den-building is about the process as much as the final result. - A sturdy frame: Chairs and tables are good for building a structure quickly (good for very young children). Bamboo canes are light, strong and fairly cheap. Broom handles or tent poles are also good. Bendy sticks or plastic bendy pipes can make an interestingly shaped den. Fallen branches make you feel like Robinson Crusoe (but don’t destroy trees). - Stuff for tying: String or rope; rags - try cutting up old T-shirts. - Shelter Materials: Bright materials can help you turn your den into a palace, fancy restaurant or castle. If you want to leave your den outside you’ll need waterproof material, such as plastic dust sheets or tarpaulin. You can use large leaves a bit like tiles but you need lots and they must overlap properly so the rain runs off them and not into your den. It’s fun experimenting though. If you do use leaves, ferns and moss remember that these are the habitats for little creatures so exercise some care. DON’T use glass, or very heavy fence panels, tins of paint or branches cut from living trees. If you’re outside respect the environment! Don’t damage the den site - when your den is dismantled it should leave no trace. Don’t discard litter; take your rubbish home with you. Take lots of photos or videos of your efforts. One afternoon building a den in the company of your favourite people will also build memories that last a lifetime.

THAME THERAPY CLINIC WELCOME NEW ACUPUNCTURIST... Thame Therapy Clinic are pleased to welcome a new Acupuncturist, Deborah Amlot, who has taken over from Poppy Bowler and will be working closely with Andy Roscoe. In this article, Deborah explains her interest and training in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.
A
cupuncture has had a very positive impact on my life and my children’s lives and I decided to train as an Acupuncturist as a result of this and a long term interest in complementary medicine. Chinese medicine seemed to me to contain a lot of common sense especially the idea of the body working best when in balance. The aim of most acupuncture is to balance the body, mind and spirit in a way that Western Medicine does not, and this is important to me. My course in Acupuncture and Chinese medicine was at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading. The course was fantastic in many ways, especially the focus on clinical experience in the final year. I was particularly struck by the way in which Acupuncture addressed mental health issues and not just injuries and pain for which it is widely known. By the time I left I had experience in treating a wide variety of physical and mental conditions. I am now just finishing a post graduate diploma in paediatric acupuncture. Having three children myself who have benefited from Acupuncture I am keen for other children to benefit and for parents to know there is and alternative to Western medicine. The course teaches many ways of stimulating the energy pathways including a type of massage called Tuina, the use of a warming herb called moxa, and the invigoration of the skin with scraping tools called quasha. Needles are not the only option in Acupuncture! I am in clinic on Tuesdays. For an informal discussion with Deborah Amlot or to book an appointment please call Thame Therapy Clinic on 01844 215555 or visit www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk

If you would like to dip a toe in the water without committing to a course, or if you have done my beginners’ course and want to know how you can carry on meditating in a group, there are several options at Linden Tree Meditation. A follow-on group is one option for those who’ve done the 5-week beginners’ course or who have some prior meditation experience. This involves less teaching of basic skills and more independent meditation, but is still guided and supervised; giving you the chance to develop techniques you might have touched on, within a supportive community. There are several one-off events or workshopstyle courses that you can attend, with a different focus each time. This summer and through the warmer months next year, I’m delighted to be leading a series of events at the University of Oxford Botanic Garden & Arboretum. These are unique opportunities to meditate in nature, using the surroundings, the plants and in some cases their essential oils too. Or you can learn about the 7 main chakras of ancient Tantric philosophy in an interactive class, meditating on each of these energy centres while learning about their associated mind/body properties. A fun way to meditate, using a combination of visual images, essential oils, crystals, sounds, colours and postures. If you are woman struggling with symptoms of (peri)menopause, I also offer a specially tailored monthly Menopause Meditation Circle for this phase of life. Combining soothing water and moon-based mediations with relaxing body scan, mindfulness through breath, and plenty of opportunity for chat and support around self-care, this is a lovely way to get back in control of your body and emotions. Finally, if you prefer a one-to-one session tailored to your individual needs, I can help with this too. Perhaps you are suffering with chronic pain or insomnia, or having trouble with anxiety or depression. In some cases, private teaching is preferable, so please get in touch to discuss your situation.
