GET THE LOOK Natural stone surfaces in your bathroom: what By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
you ask us?
Bathrooms are quickly gaining significance when it comes to where we spend money in our
homes, with more and more people choosing to lose a bedroom making space for their dream bathroom. Freestanding tubs, rainforest shower heads and his and her sinks are some of the most lavish additions to our luxurious lavatories. And natural stones continue to be a popular choice for bathroom surfaces, including shower walls and trays, vanity tops, floors, and bath surrounds.
Coulon Stone, who’ve been fitting natural stone in bathrooms for over 25 years have gathered their top three most asked questions by customers buying for bathrooms.
1. Is natural stone slippery when wet? Yes when polished natural stone, particularly marble and granite can be slippery when wet, however there are some simple solutions to avoid any nasty slips. Almost all natural stones can be bought in a variety of textures, including flame brushed which is non-slip. But if a shiny surface is what you want, we can add an anti-slip wax. 2. Which natural stones are suitable for bathrooms? Marbles and limestones are the most popular choice for bathrooms. They are long lasting and luxurious, but they can stain and water mark if not treated with care, i.e. sealed every couple of years and cleaned regularly with a gentle, non-acidic soap. Slate, granite and man-made materials including Lapitec and quartz are more durable. . 3. Is a stone shower tray waterproof enough? Yes, similarly to a tiled shower wall or tray, your stone mason or bathroom provider must properly tank the area when fitting your shower tray. This means fitting a waterproof membrane underneath the tray to stop moisture seeping through. For more information on prices, email us on info@coulonstone.com, call us on 01494 484333 or visit our showroom in Stokenchurch or our website www.coulonstone.com.

The Prosecco and Gin Festival is Going Pink to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research! The Prosecco and Gin Festival has just announced that their High Wycombe event will be a Big Pink Drink Event - with all profit going to charity!
The first touring prosecco and gin festival has made the decision to support Breast Cancer Now and will be stopping off in High Wycombe on Saturday 7th July at the Wycombe Swan Theatre, Old Town Hall. The Big Pink Drink Event is a pinker twist on the popular Prosecco and Gin Festival – which already includes over 40 gins and a wide selection of prosecco and sparkling wines. For this festival, the organisers will also be adding more pink gin and fizz than you can shake a stick at, along with games, giveaways, live music and entertainment on the day. Organisers for the Prosecco and Gin Festival, say: “This is a very exciting new initiative for us. We plan to provide a fantastic day out for everyone who attends, along with supporting a great cause. “The Big Pink Drink Event hopes to raise much needed funds for Breast Cancer Now, whilst raising awareness of the disease in a relaxing and entertaining environment, with 100% of the profits going to charity. “This event will have loads of pink gins and fizz’s available, as well as our standard gin and prosecco range. There will also be a selection of beer and soft drinks for those who aren’t too keen on either. “We don’t anticipate tickets hanging around for very long, with some of our past events selling out very quickly, so we’d advise anyone interested in attending to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment.” Guests will be welcomed with a free branded balloon gin glass which is theirs to take home with them. The standard ticket price also includes a free drink token which can be exchanged at any of the event bars for a gin and tonic or glass of fizz, plus and event guide containing tasting notes, serving tips and cocktail recipes to take home with them. Each bar at the Prosecco and Gin Festival will work on a token basis. Tokens can be purchased in advance (ideal if you are looking to buy tickets as a gift) or at the designated token point at the venue. Tokens are priced at £5.00 each and can be exchanged for any drink. Standard tickets are priced at £15.50 and include a free drink, a branded glass to take home, tasting tips and recipe booklet, plus full access to the event and entertainment. Alternatively, guests can purchase tickets for £29.50 which includes a standard entry ticket and three additional drinks tokens. Tickets are on sale now and can be booked by visiting the website www.proseccoandginfestival.co.uk or by visiting the booking site, where further details of other events are also available www.ticketsource.co.uk/prosecco-and-gin-festival/events.

Children’s Hearing Most children’s hearing is tested a few days after birth as part of the successful universal neonatal screening policy introduced a few years ago. If given the all clear, this can often be the last time their hearing is tested as a child. Young children rely upon listening and good communication in the crucial early stages of their development and there is now evidence to suggest that some children may have spent years underperforming at school due to undiagnosed hearing difficulties at a very young age. With this in mind, it is worth watching out for certain behaviours that may indicate a hearing problem. Take note if your child is withdrawn or unusually shy, or conversely is noisy and attention seeking in group settings. Both these two extremes depend upon the personality of the child but can also be indicative of a degree of hearing loss possibly making them insecure and unsure how to naturally interact in a group situation.
Listed below are a few indicators to look out for that may be attributed to hearing difficulties: • Your child is inconsistently responding to sounds. • Language and speech development is delayed. • Speech is unclear. • Sound volume is increased on electronic devices eg, TV, iPods and other sound systems. • Your child does not follow instructions. • Your child often says “Huh?” or looks confused. • Your child doesn’t respond when asked by name. • Behavioural problems in early years. If your child exhibits any of these signs it doesn’t necessarily mean they have a hearing problem and even if they have it is unlikely to be permanent. It is however worth following up with a simple hearing assessment. This can be arranged via your GP with a referral to a hospital audiology department or you can choose to visit a private audiology practice. At Aston Hearing we provide hearing healthcare for all the family and our specialist children’s hearing tests are fun and interactive. We provide a comprehensive picture of your child’s hearing situation and make recommendations for future management.

Bowen Treatment and Sporting endeavours... I was delighted to see my lovely client Nicky bound into my clinic on April 23rd, the day after the ‘hottest ever’ London Marathon. She was wearing her Finisher T shirt and proudly showed me her medal. Nicky completed the marathon in a fantastic time and breezed to the end comfortably despite the heat.
I first started treating Nicky in 2014 when she decided to train for
her first ever marathon. She followed a ‘novice’ marathon-training schedule, interspersed with regular Bowen sessions, including a session pre marathon and immediately after. Nicky said ‘ Jen kept me in good shape, both physically and mentally. When I had a twinge or ache it was dealt with quickly with Bowen treatment. After the race I saw Jen to aid my recovery. After a day of stiffness, I was completely back to normal’ In January 2015 Nicky started a training programme for the London marathon. Once again she started regular sessions. The result was a time exactly the same as the previous year. Nicky reported ‘I felt great and had the most amazing day. I felt comfortable running all 26.2 miles; nothing hurt, Post race - no pain, no aches, no injuries!’
This January Nicky embarked on training or the London marathon. I saw her once a month and just before the event. Training was easy and uneventful, despite dreadful weather and road conditions. Nicky was delighted with her run, especially as it was a hard, hot race. Nicky arrived for her post race treatment looking fantastic, all we need to do was relieve was to help relieve achy legs! She said ’Bowen treatments have been crucial to keeping my in shape for long distant running. I couldn’t have managed this without you. You helped me throughout my training, pre and post marathon’ I am so very proud and I’m delighted with Nicky’s response to treatment, dedication to training and….actually running a marathon, which is an immense achievement! Many congratulations to you! Jen Webster Bowen, Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com T: 07768 188664
Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.
Since then Nicky has run several half marathons and 10k races, and I have seen her to ‘sort’ out the odd injury, she has remained fit and well though out.

In the spotlight... MINI Cooper 5-Door Hatch 2018 review
MOTORING
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.
While some motoring nerds had a fit when additional doors were affixed to the MINI Hatch in 2014, dealerships didn’t give a hoot.
@carwriteups
That’s because it was evident that the five-door model sold like hotcakes as the automotive industry has a fondness for more convenience and practicality in family-focused cars.
T
he 136PS Cooper is one of the best-liked cars in the range, so I chose to get behind the wheel of the MINI many consumers will purchase or lease. Revisions for 2018 are primarily skin-deep, though the 2018 MINI does enjoy added spec, such as LED taillights and headlights. If you’re interested in the options inventory, you can go even further and select LED matrix lights. What’s more, the MINI hatch accommodates upgraded infotainment and connectivity. There’s also a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission option, should you want an effort-free drive. MINI says it has worked like a trojan on areas of the new vehicle’s engine, too. In the case of the Cooper, the little powerplant is now lighter owing to carbon-fibre plastic covers. The car-producer has also improved the cooling system, exhaust and engine management to tease out a bit of added eagerness and alertness. On the move, things aren’t that much different though. But that’s not a bad thing. This is because the Oxfordshire-constructed MINI is one of the most beautiful handling cars around, with a spotlight on sprightliness. The steering is gratifyingly sharp on snaking sections of rural tarmac, but it’s not the best vehicle for long motorway journeys. The turbopowered 1.5-litre lump doesn’t thump quite as much as you might expect, so you need to trigger Sport mode to smooth-talk the MINI into stimulating you. Ride-wise, my MINI Cooper test car came prepared with adaptive suspension, hardening things up suitably in Sport setting. However, the ride is still a touch stiffer than the opposition at gentler speeds, even when put into its most gracious set-up. In the cockpit, nothing much has altered apart from a new steering wheel, so the first-rate, retro-cum-stateof-the-art dash stays where it is for now. Additionally, all MINIs come kitted-out with no less than a 6.5-
28
inch infotainment display, which can be boosted to a bigger 8.8-inch touchscreen. You can also stipulate sat nav. The infotainment system stems from the iDrive system that BMW employs, so it is unfussy to control. Furthermore, the screen quality on the 8.8-inch unit is breath-taking. The five-door MINI is sat on a wheelbase that’s 72mm longer than the more common three-door version, so room in the rear comes up as respectable - but not excellent - for the supermini subdivision. Price wise, the base cost of the MINI Cooper slinks in a little bit cheaper than Ford’s five-door Fiesta ST-Line.

Coffee Break
THE PRIVATE PATIENT
by PD James
At a private clinic in Dorset, Rhoda Gradwyn has booked an operation
to remove a serious facial scar – one which she has borne for many years, but ‘no longer has need of.’ The operation is a success, but by morning Rhoda Gradwyn is dead, and suspicion falls on the staff of Cheverell Manor. Commander Adam Dalgliesh, poet and policeman, is summoned from London to investigate, and before long finds himself dealing with not one, but two unexplained deaths and a whole host of dark secrets. This is the latest in James’ Dalgliesh series, and it bears all the familiar hallmarks of the earlier novels – a death in a closed community, a complicated back story and a steady move to the conclusion. As ever, the supporting characters are just as important as Dalgliesh himself – both those on his team and those who inhabit Cheverell Manor – and they are deftly drawn, with real and believable traits.
For the reader, the experience is more about contemplation than guesswork – the identity of the killer is revealed three quarters of the way through, and the rest of the novel is concerned with motivation and moral dilemmas. There is also a significant amount of tying up of loose ends from the ongoing stories of Dalgliesh and his colleagues, and the ending is rich and reflective. Some would argue that James’ novels are an acquired taste, being so far from the run of the mill ‘whodunnit’ – I would say they are a taste well worth the acquiring.
GIRL UNDERGROUND
by Morris Gleitzman Bridget is an 11-year-old girl who is about to start at a new school. Not just any school, but one of Australia’s top private boarding schools. All she wants is to stay anonymous in the hope that no one will find out about her family. You see, Bridget isn’t like the other pupils, and her family is not what you’d expect. Her dad does a roaring trade in dodgy Russian blenders and smuggling goods out of Turkmenistan, whilst her brother is in prison for robbery. Yes, Bridget is worried she will say the wrong thing and give herself away. So, when her new friend, Menzies, asks her to help him she is worried that people might start asking questions. Especially when it turns out that it involves breaking into the Australian government to try and see the Prime Minister! This hugely entertaining novel from Gleitzman deals with the serious issue of refugees in Australia, and debates the rights and wrongs of keeping them in detention centres as illegal immigrants. The reader will identify with the views of both Bridget and Menzies who cannot see the fairness in keeping children ‘behind bars’ when all they have done is escape from their homeland in fear for their lives. This is one to spark discussion!
