Hello Readers,

I’d like to start my letter this month with a CONGRATULATIONS shout out to the lucky winners of our Beacon’s Festival Ticket Competition,, featured in our April issue. A huge thank you to the Festival organisers for offering us the tickets and well done to Caroline Hiley on winning two adult tickets and Jessica Anscomb who was the winner of a family ticket. Both ladies (pictured right, with our Sales Manager Big Mike), from Chinnor, will be donning their best festival attire and heading to Watlington Hill on 19th/20th June, to experience a weekend of enlightened entertainment and the best sunset for miles. Beacons Festival marks the beginning of the festival season, as well as the official start to summer, with the longest day being Sunday 21st. Check out our ‘Sounds of the Summer’ festival guide on Page 22 for inspiration on which musical event suits you best. Sunday 21st highlights another important day on the calendar as it’s Father’s Day. If eating out is your old man’s ideal way to spend his afternoon check out our restaurant advertisers on Pages 9 - 11. Wimbledon makes its return at the end of this month, which always sparks the start of summer for me as it means you can indulge in a large bowl or strawberries & cream washed down with a cold glass of prosecco - all in the name of sport of course! But if watching a bunch of sporting legends grunt and scream their way through a tennis match doesn’t quite do it for you, then have a flick through your copy of Look Local. As always, this issue offers you a great selection of interesting and informative articles to peruse at your leisure as well as a host of local events that you might like to attend, and you might even find the perfect supplier for your requirements via one of our many advertisers. Until next month, enjoy the sun and happy reading...

Motoring Vehicle Review:

Mazda MX-5

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Tim Barnes-Clay weekly road test journalist for Confused.com.

Mazda’s MX-5 is a legend. It just does everything you ask of it in a straightforward way.

Forget the ‘tech’ in the name of the 2.0i Sport Tech Nav version I test drove for a week. The car has an electric hood, but everything else about the roadster is good, simple, honest fun. Turn the key and the engine guns into life, with an unpretentious bark. Slip the gearshift into first and the car whirs along contentedly through the cogs. However, it’s the ultra direct steering that impresses. Move the wheel a fraction and the car responds urgently. Feedback from the road surface through to the steering wheel is also excellent and the rear wheel drive drop top is perfect for flinging around corners and will grip to dry roads like superglue. The Mazda isn’t just about driving precision though; it’s a lot to do with dependability. So much so, it was named ‘Britain’s most reliable new sportscar’ in a recent Which? Car Survey. Achieving a reliability score of 97.4 percent and 91.1 percent, the MX-5 beat rivals to claim first and second places in the age-related categories. The vehicle is also on the practical side – for a strict

06

two seater. The boot is a respectable rectangular shape and will fit a couple of carry-on flight cases as well as a few odd and ends. Looks-wise, Mazda gave the MX-5 a fresh face at the end of 2012, with an aggressive front grille and a different bumper design with a bold chin spoiler. All this creates a deeper and wider appearance that also improves aerodynamics by reducing drag around the fog lamps and over the front tyres. What’s more, there’s a pedestrian-friendly bonnet on the MX-5. If a collision is detected, the edge of the hood instantly ‘pops-up’ to increase the crumple zone between the bonnet and engine, reducing the severity of pedestrian injuries. Inside, the Sport Tech Nav model benefits from climate control and a glossy dashboard panel, as well as steering wheel inserts. It also has an auto-dimming interior mirror and boasts an alloy pedal set. A satellite-navigation system with an integrated touch screen monitor, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity is fitted too. The Mazda MX-5 enjoys incredible popularity in Britain and the current range offers an even more rewarding sportscar ownership

experience, while remaining unrivalled as an exhilarating drive that can also be used every day. Together with its affordability, low running costs, reliability and great residual values, the MX-5 is a thoroughly modern sportscar that people can buy with their heart and their head. Of course, while this model is still contemporary, it is set to become a modern day classic in the not too distant future because an all-new Mazda MX-5 is due to launch in the UK later this year. Book Review

Seasons of Love

Two women and the story behind the story After completing his first novel ‘Seasons of Love’ the author, Neil Topping, from Chalgrove, became aware from the comments made by friends and family, that the background to the book was a story in itself. ‘Seasons of Love’ tells of an English girl who meets a German prisoner of war, their relationship and their lives and those of their families over the next 50 years. It is told against the background of the national and international events that affected the British and German populations from the end of the Second World War until the Millennium. However, it was a flippant comment made by Neil’s late wife Tina, whilst watching a four part American drama on TV that inspired him to write the book. “I made a comment to Tina, that I never understood why an intelligent woman like her insisted on watching such rubbish night after night. To which she threw down the gauntlet and said ‘If you can write something better then why don’t you?”

This one incident then became the catalyst of Neil’s ambitious project, which contains in excess of 300,000 words. Having always had an interest in the lives of the German POWs in this country he put pen to paper and this formed the basis of his story. Before she died, Tina left a letter for her husband to open after her death in which she urged retired construction director, Neil, 68, to get his book published. Some time after her death, Neil met and married Heather. She too encouraged Neil to publish his works and was instrumental in supporting him through the challenges of making this dream a reality.

08

Three years of detailed research went into the writing of ‘Seasons of Love’. Neil explains; ‘When I was researching the story, I got tremendous support from the staff at the Imperial War Museum, the German Historical Institute, car manufacturers Volkswagen and Mercedes as well as countless other organisations. They all seemed to be fascinated by my project and were keen to play a part in it.’ The author has said that his novel is not a money-making exercise as all royalties from the sales will be going to Chalgrove Primary School, the Oxfordshire Advocacy Service and construction industry charity, the Lighthouse Club. Neil has been involved with all of these organisations for a number of years in a voluntary capacity. The national marketing of the novel is in the hands of the publishers, a London based company, PublishNation. However, since the last volume was published, Neil has embarked upon a series of talks to local organisations in which he describes the challenge of writing a first novel, the research that went into it and the self-publishing process. Both the book itself and the talks have been well received. Neil is available to give talks to groups in Oxfordshire for which he does not make a charge. He can be contacted on 01865 890650 or by email at neil.topping@btinternet.com. All four volumes in paperback or kindle version can be purchased through Amazon or the newsagent in Chalgrove and contain a touching dedication to both Neil’s wives, ‘To Tina, for encouraging me to write this book and to Heather for supporting me in getting it published.’

Lemon & Poppy Seed Bundt Cake

Recipe To make this d zesty bake; elicious

350g butter , 350g caster sugar, 6 eggs, 400 g self-raisin g fl our, 1tsp baking po wder, 2tsp va nilla, 3tbsp honey, 250ml sour cr eam, zest 6 lemon s, juice 2 lem ons, 3tbsp poppy seeds.

For the lemon glaze, you will need;

150g granula ted sugar, jui ce 2 lemons.

For the white icing, you will need:

200g icing su gar, a few dr ops water.

With poppy seeds for texture, lemon glaze for tartness and white icing for a deliciously sweet finishing touch, this fluffy light sponge cake is sure to become a firm favourite in your household. The Bundt shape makes this bake something special, but feel free to cook in any tin you like for an everyday treat. Method for the cake: 1.

Preheat the oven to 180c (fan) then grease and flour your Bundt tin (this ensures easy removal of the cake when baked!).

2.

Cream together your butter and sugar using an electric whisk until light and fluffy. Now add the eggs one at a time with a little of the flour; whisk between each addition and once all the eggs and flour are combined, stir in the vanilla and baking powder.

3.

Now whisk in the honey, sour cream, zest and juice of the lemons until combined. The mix should be light and thick. Fold in the poppy seeds.

4.

Spoon the mix into the tin and even out. Place in the oven on a middle shelf and bake for 50-60 minutes or until golden brown. Leave in the tin for 5 minutes then transfer onto a wire rack.

Onto the lemon glaze: 1.

Place your sugar and lemon juice in a small pan and heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

2.

Remove from the heat. Using a skewer, make holes across the surface of your cake. Pour the hot lemon glaze all over the sponge, allowing it to sink into the holes. Leave to cool for 10 minutes.

And to finish, the white icing: 1.

Now, combine the icing sugar and water and drizzle all over the cake. For decoration, use some poppy seeds and more lemon zest.

Eat warm from the oven with a dollop of crème fraiche or cool and have a slice with your afternoon cuppa.

Enjoy!

Health & Wellbeing

When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true. . . Watlington-based dance school, Performanze Drama, will be enjoying the trip of their dancing lives this summer, as on 19th August, they will be performing at the Videopolis Theatre in the heart of Disneyland Paris.

Last summer the troupe of 20 girls aged 8-16, already veterans

of Oxford New Theatre, Aylesbury Waterside and London’s famous Sadlers Wells theatre, submitted a video audition in the hope of dancing on a stage whose audience has a 2,500 capacity. Almost a year on, and the 20 girls, from Watlington, Benson and surrounding areas, are in final preparations for a 30-minute showcase which will give them the chance to show an international audience just what they can do. The show will be a mixture of group, small group, duet and solo dancers, with some particularly quick changes of costumes – some only 60 seconds. With dances to such diverse music as Palladio and Uptown Funk, the performance will be a testament to the hours of practice the team have put in over the last few months. The costs of the trip aren’t low, and girls have been involved in fundraising which has seen them raise almost £2,000 from cake sales, face-painting and other activities at local fetes over the last few months. Thanks are due to all the local people who have supported the girls in their fundraising efforts, this really helps with them to achieve this dream. Rosie Easton, School Principal, said: “The aim of the show is to give the girls a glimpse into Disney’s world of entertainment, by offering them the unique experience of becoming a ‘Disney performer’ for the day. The girls have worked so very hard to have this opportunity; hours upon hours have been put in by staff, children and the parents running children to practices and for fundraising events. I am so very proud of every single one of them they are lovely to teach and I know this is going to be an opportunity of a life time, one that will stay with them forever. We pride ourselves at Performanze in offering fantastic opportunities to all our children through exams, shows, local fetes, London events, International events such as Disney and much much more. We create dances aimed at showcasing all the ages and abilities talents, with children developing physically, emotionally and cognitively as rounded dancers and people, all in a loving family atmosphere.’

Please mention Look Local Magazine when responding to adverts.

Still to complete are the costumes, with thousands of iron-on gems to be added to make sure the girls sparkle on the stage, and hairstyles to fashion that will withstand the rigours of the dance without showing a hair out of place. Practices now are focused on polishing and perfecting the dances, so that the Performanze dancers will put on a show to be proud of on the big day. After the Disney performance and a couple of days to enjoy the Disney parks, it will be back to work for the enthusiastic group, who have so many fantastic events coming up including Summer Fete performance, a Kenton Theatre show, and events such as the O2 booked for 2016 already! Bowen Therapy: The case files... With Jen Webster, Bowen Therapist

I have written recently about how Bowen can help alleviate and help address problems with back pain, sports injuries and headaches and have provided readers with case studies relating to my clients. My articles in Look Local have been a fantastic way of spreading the word about Bowen and have encouraged many people to seek appointments with me. This month I am delighted to share with you a testimonial that I received recently. Please read Nicky’s story below:

“ I was introduced to Jen 18 months ago when I was suffering with terrible

I went to see Jen without knowing about Bowen Therapy but willing to give it a try. After a consultation with Jen, explaining how it worked, and going through my medical history, she treated me and I immediately felt the pain shifting down and out of my arm so that I was left with an ache in my hand. After the second treatment a week later the pain disappeared completely. As a consequence I slept better and my general feeling of well-being returned. I was a Bowen convert on that alone. I continued to see Jen as I felt so good after the treatment, knowing and feeling that my body was aligned. Whilst researching Bowen, I saw that Jen (via her website) had helped one of her clients overcome long term back pain and successfully run in the New York marathon. Having entered several 10K and half marathons previously, I was considering entering a marathon and with Jen’s support I entered my first one in April 2014 at the age of 51. I followed a ‘novice’ marathon-training schedule, which I interspersed with regular visits to Jen to keep me in good shape both physically and mentally. When I had an ache or twinge of any sort Jen would focus on that so it was dealt with immediately. My recovery from long runs was so quick. I was able to run the Stratford-onAvon marathon in 4 hours 10mins. I saw Jen the day after the race to aid my recovery - after a day or two of stiffness I was completely back to normal This year I decided to enter the London Marathon, in January I went to see Jen to help get my body fit and healthy for training. I had regular appointments booked in advance until the race. My final session was a week before the race. Her treatment helped me feel strong, healthy and completely capable of running the distance. I ran the race in exactly the same time - 4 hours 10 mins and had the most amazing day. I felt comfortable running all 26.2 miles; nothing hurt, I felt great! I saw Jen early the next day, bounding up the stairs to her clinic, proudly wearing my medals! Post race - no pain, no aches, no injuries! Another bonus to my general well-being is that I have not suffered from cold sores since starting Bowen treatment. Meeting Jen has been great for me. I have recommended her to many of my family and friends. They too are benefitting from Bowen. People with long-term pain are especially pleased to have met her.

For further information please contact: Jen Webster (BSc, Cert ECBS, Adv NST, MBTPA, CNHC reg.), Bowen Therapist at The White House,Upper High Street, Thame.

pain due to a trapped nerve in my arm. The GP advised me to take painkillers and ‘come back in 3 months if it still hurt’. The shooting pains running through my arm and hand stopped me from sleeping and I couldn’t bear the thought of waiting for it to fix itself.

gum disease. Gum disease isn’t pretty. It eats away at gums and teeth and in advanced forms even attacks the bones that support the teeth and the lower third of the face.

Why Floss?

Every tooth has five surfaces, and brushing only gets to three of them (the top/bottom, back and front). If you don’t floss, it leaves the two side surfaces unclean and potentially subject to disease. Food and sticky bacteria, commonly known as plaque, lodge in the space between teeth. If left, plaque generates acid which can cause cavities, irritate gums and eventually lead to

Floss is the only thing that can get into the space between teeth to remove these harmful bacteria. If done before brushing, flossing can expose a larger area for the fluoride in the toothpaste to act upon. The best way to care for your teeth is to combine plaque removal through flossing and brushing with chemical cleaning via toothpaste and mouth wash. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

The Soldiers of Oxfordshire Trust (SOFO) have built a brand new museum in Woodstock. Located in the grounds of the Oxfordshire Museum, it promotes greater awareness of the history of conflict and how it has affected the people of Oxfordshire through the ages. It holds, protects and provides public access to the collections of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and the Queens Own Oxfordshire Hussars who counted Sir Winston Churchill as an enthusiastic member. After many years of planning and fundraising, the museum opened it’s doors to the public in June 2014 and the official opening was carried out by the Princess Royal in September 2014. The museum has a very exciting future ahead of it.
