Hello Readers,

I hope you are all enjoying the summer! Finally we can get outside and relax in the sunshine in our gardens as it would seem that ball of fire in the sky has got his hat on and (for now at least) is coming out to play. With warm, light nights in mind, have you ever considered installing an outside kitchen to take advantage of the season? And I’m not talking a hi-tech BBQ, no I mean an all singing - all dancing, full on kitchen! Yes they do exist, I didn’t realise this either, but if you turn to page 33 Coulon Stone Ltd will tell you all about this fantastic addition to your outside living space. Our News & Events section is bursting this month with lots of local fetes and festivals. Chinnor is hosting a special Fireworks event on White’s Field on Saturday 11th June to celebrate her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II turning 90 - gates open at 9pm! This is followed by a Family Fun Day on Saturday 12th from 11:30am which features Live Music, Magic, Dancers, a Fancy Dress Parade and much more. And even better, its FREE to attend. Another important date to remember this month is Father’s Day on Sunday 19th June. If you are looking for something a bit different to do with your Dad on this special day why not visit Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway for Afternoon Tea on board one of their vintage steam trains. Or if a meal out is more up his street then I would highly recommend Bluebella Roo’s at The Green Dragon in Haddenham. I was lucky enough to sample the delights of their menu recently and can honestly say it was sublime. Turn to page 28 to read my review. DON’T FORGET TO VOTE: Thursday 23rd June June is also a very important month for our country as voting for whether we stay or leave the European Union is on Thursday 23rd. This month our Business Matters feature focuses on this topic as Mark Tubb gives us his views on page 6. Until next month, happy reading...

Business Matters

Ahead of the referendum on 23rd June as to whether we should vote to stay or leave the European Union, Mark Tubb, Business Mentor and Co-Director at Princes Risborough Golf Club gives us his views on the subject...

EUROPE:

From a business perspective being part of Europe should be a positive thing for all members. Together

we should certainly be stronger and in turn being divided must surely mean greater areas of weakness. However, there is little doubt that Europe is currently flawed due to mismanagement and perhaps even corruption. Greater strength may not just mean a united Europe but within this Britain also having a fairer membership deal. It could be argued that the referendum is about the wrong subject. We are as much a part of the European economy as Germany and France and the other countries. We are already immersed into Europe to such a depth that simply walking away is nonsensical. Instead of saying, ‘should we stay or should we go’ we should instead be spending our efforts on deciding the matters we are prepared to allow an elected European body to make and those decisions that should remain within our jurisdiction. I firmly believe it is better for us to be part of Europe and to be able to influence Europe as much as Germany and France. So as a person running a business and as a person employed by a business, I have to say, “stay a member of the European Club”. However, just because we are members of ‘the club’ doesn’t mean we have to be completely dictated to. We need to re-negotiate our terms and start asking questions about the corruption that appears evident within ‘the club’. For what it’s worth some key thoughts I believe to be true at this time: •

European Government and all Government are corrupted by the power they wield. Most politicians do not have the necessary experience to do a proper honest and courageous job in the positions they hold and most are corrupted to a degree by personal ambition, agenda and greed. The whole political system in Europe and the UK is flawed and abused and paid for by equally flawed taxation of the honest workers’ sweat. That said; without a Government in place democracy cannot work - so Government (even that formed by the current breed of greedy self-interested politicians throughout the world) is a necessary evil. If all corruption and inefficiency is removed the money raised in tax will more easily cover the services we need so its worth fighting to remove both.

We should tell the European Parliament that we are as much a part of Europe as the other members are, that we do not want to leave Europe and will remain in Europe unless they shortsightedly decide to throw us out, however, using common sense (rather than arrogance) we will not accept unnecessary and inefficient control by a European Parliament.

I could go on at length on this subject however amongst the most important points in my view would be: •

06

Europe should add value and efficiency for all members and not seek to add unnecessary or

June 2016 inefficient controls. For example “Freedom to move around within Europe” does not mean that individual countries cannot control what is offered to visitors or people that are new to a country and individual countries should be able to restrict entry at times and on what terms they choose. We must be able to protect our borders and economy as our own needs dictate. We will be kind and thoughtful about the plight of others as far as we reasonably can – as we always are - but it must be our decision. •

Cost of EU membership should be reasonable and fair for all countries and focus should be to limit unnecessary controls and costs of the EU and minimise the membership fee that needs to be paid by all. Our membership fee needs to be reduced sharply.

European Law proposed by committee should never be more powerful than UK Laws that have been formed through long democratic argument and precedents. Our laws are fair and within our borders, our law is the law. Our laws can and will be changed by us within our system if perceived to be unjust or outdated.

We will maintain our own army and military defence force and work with other European Countries to defend Europe, others and ourselves as our elected Government decides.

Our own elected government must decide taxation policy and economic policies.

MOTORING : in the spotlight... HONDA Civic Tourer Reviewed by Tim BarnesClay, Motoring Journalist.

I quite like the Honda Civic Tourer. It feels well built; the driving position is good and the load area is massive.

T

here’s one drawback, though: it’s ugly. Yes, I know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the appearance of a car really does matter. After all, any new motor these days costs a fair proportion of your monthly income, so you might as well buy a car you’re pleased to look at. The backside of the car looks like it belongs to another ride. It’s ungainly and has no flair. Yet, I can see why the Japanese auto maker has made the Civic Tourer the way it is. The shape of the rear ensures a wide, low boot – making it easy to load up anything. For instance, lifting my tot’s buggy into the boot took no effort at all; in fact, I could hardly describe it as ‘lifting’, the lip is so handily near to the ground. And that, apart from the obvious practical aspect, is a positive tick in the Civic Tourer’s box. Viewed from the side, the vehicle is low-slung and almost sleek. It is, undoubtedly, the best angle to observe the car. And that’s a shame because you want the back to look good too, and, because it doesn’t, it’s frustrating. Inside, the seats are supportive and the instrumentation is clear and intuitive to use. There’s a lot of legroom up front and enough for two six-footers in the back seats. The same goes for headroom, which is weird, considering how squat the car looks on the outside. Clever stuff, Honda. In 1.6 diesel guise, as tested here, the Tourer is smooth, pithy and extremely frugal. The steering feels a little artificially weighted, but the Civic feels planted on motorways - and on A-roads, or twisty country routes, the car is eager and willing to grip hard on corners. What’s more, a six-speed manual gearbox makes the most of the clout on tap, thanks to a clear-cut shift action. Numbers-wise, the oil-burner will do zero to 62mph in 10.5 seconds and its top speed is 121mph. The on-paper figures don’t do the Tourer justice – the power and torque delivery makes it feels much faster. The Civic comes really well equipped, too. Even though I tested the all-singing-and-dancing EX Plus flagship model with leather seats, satnav, 17-inch wheels and xenon lights, all Tourers come kitted out, as standard, with Bluetooth and digital DAB radio. The Civic Tourer’s price-tag – especially in EX Plus flagship guise (£26,200) means the Honda will be a fairly costly company car choice.

08

@carwriteups

However, the diesel’s tank just keeps on giving – you can get up to 800 miles out of it – and the car returns 72.4mpg on average, emitting just 103g/km of CO2. Go for any other non-petrol below the EX Plus trim level and, due to smaller 16-inch wheels, you’ll get 74.3mpg and emissions of 99g/km of CO2. Crucially, this makes the Civic Tourer road tax free and will keep running costs low. If you can live with its ugly rear booty – then another reason to go for the Civic in estate form is its bullet-proof reliability. The Japaneseowned company has a well-deserved reputation for making cars that stand up to the test of time. Furthermore, the Civic Tourer is actually built at Honda’s UK factory in Swindon, so you’ll be able to wave the flag for British motor-manufacturing with honour, too.

STYLE

FILE Wedding Dressing &

Togging Up for the Races

Jen and Juliet are attending a family wedding so decided to have a colour analysis to help them find their perfect outfit. Both wanted to dress in style and loved their new outfits The ladies are usually very casual - Jen being a mum of very little boy and Juliet works in the caring profession - so they wanted to really dress up for the occasion with stylish and fashionable attire! The selection they chose, both in their Zing* colours, suit them down to a tee and they couldn’t have been more pleased. Go to my Youtube channel - jobaldwintrott - to see just how much they liked their new clothes - hats, fascinators and bags too!

CHOOSING THE PERFECT STATEMENT OUTFIT COLOUR: DARE TO ‘ZING*’ If your dress is a Zing colour and very bright wear a neutral jacket and neutral or soft tonal shoes and accessories. Keep the major colour to the dress. Alternatively, if you’re wearing a multi-coloured dress then choose carefully the colours that really work for you and will work for your jacket and/or hat. HAT

LOVERS

Culottes & Flairs...

very ‘in’ and very chic worn with heels and a simple but feminine top. The key to culottes for a more formal look is to wear them fitted on the hips then flared underneath but in a loose fabric. Some culottes are in thick cotton which hold the width and therefore do make your legs look that much wider.

A Daring Option

Everything is cyclical and I am pleased to notice that dressing up for weddings, and yes, that means hats, too, is popular, once again. Probably helped with the rise in popularity in going to the races, togging up for Henley, but none the less it’s great to see wedding guests pushing the boat, and the budget, out a little to make the effort for the bride and groom. Buying a ‘clever outfit’ which breaks down into pieces you like by themselves is investment buying, especially when they are your perfect colours as a result of a colour consultation. Yes, you may end up spending more than your average party dress but a gorgeous jacket and dress in one of your key colours will be worn time and time again. I am a massive hat fan and am slowly spreading the ‘everyone can wear a hat’ word. Within this month’s article are a few pointers on finding the right hat. They do (and I include a fascinator in the hat genre) make an outfit. Have a wonderful month and if you would like any help finding the right outfits, like Jen (bottom left) and Juliet (top left) featured in this article, then please get in touch for some expert personal shopping help. Another great investment. with love, Jo xx

Hats Off

Balance & Compliment...

The principle of hats is the same as the principles of all styling - balancing and complimenting. The key is to look for a hat that is the opposite or Round Face: complimentary to your face shape, not one wide structured brim, even that does the same. If you have an average angular. heart shaped face you will be able to wear most hats but if you are round-faced then a narrow Small Narrow Face: brimmed hat will be less complimentary. Try on soft average brim or lots of different styles ideally with an honest friend! fascinator. You will soon see how this principle applies. Just like with clothes, try not to buy the one that looks nice but the one that looks nice on you!

Melt away the pain of frozen shoulder

With Bowen Therapy

shoulder pain) is a common problem, and one that results in frustrating debilitation for many suffers. There can be many reasons for the onset of shoulder pain but in many patients the initial complaint leads to a chronic condition with pain, loss of function and resulting stiffness. Many of my clients report difficulty sleeping, dressing, reaching up to shelves, reaching to the rear of the car, using a kettle and other limitations of lifestyle, daily activities and work – due to pain and limited range of movement. The initial pain could be a result of adhesive capsulitis, bursitis, tendonitis, referred cervical pain etc. The restrictive range of movement can often be self – perpetuating and progressively debilitating. The pain causes a reluctance to use the shoulder, and as a result the shoulder becomes stiff and progressively

more inflamed. Adhesions continue to form in the joint capsule, the less movement that takes place the more the inflammation continues – it’s a vicious circle.

How may Bowen Therapy help? Early treatment, with soft tissue therapy is recommended to, in the first instance, relieve the pain and allow greater range of movement. The Bowen Technique is a remedial and holistic form of ‘hands on’ body work, gentle and effective. The careful and precise moves, which stimulate muscles and soft tissue, prompt the body to reset imbalances and start to heal injuries and chronic complaints. The experience of a treatment is gentle, subtle and relaxing. There is no manipulation and no force used. The body normally responds quickly to Bowen, making it a very time and cost effective treatment option.

Hayfever season is upon us so what can you do to alleviate the symptoms.... If medical solutions have failed you in the past it could be time to try a more holistic approach. Here, Andy Roscoe, an Acupuncturist at Thame Therapy Clinic explains how Acupuncture and/or Homeopathy works with the symptoms of Hayfever to help reduce or (in some cases) eliminate them completely.

After a warm winter and a cold spring, the

recent lift in temperatures has brought a sudden rise in pollen levels and for some the start of hayfever misery. Medical solutions range from relatively harmless saline solutions to stronger suppressants such as anti-histamines and steroids. The latter two may be faster acting but often carry side effects such as drowsiness, nasal irritation and nosebleeds.

harvester driver who had suffered for over 20 years from hayfever every harvest time. His symptoms almost disappeared in one session, and occasional maintenance sessions thereafter kept them under control. Both his livelihood and his life came back into balance. Holistic approaches have the potential to reintegrate the mind and body, rather than just the suppression of symptoms.

If you have tried these and are worried by the side effects, you might instead try acupuncture or homeopathy. Both approaches are sophisticated and holistic because they are tailored to your individual needs and constitution. Side effects are rare and although fast relief is not guaranteed it often happens. Andy Roscoe, has been treating this problem for more than 23 years. He recalls treating a combine If you are interested in trying Acupuncture or Homeopathy call Thame Therapy Clinic on 01844

Coffee Break

The Wedding Girl Sophie

– by Sophie Kinsella

Kinsella is best known for her Shopaholic series of books, but it is well worth reading this older novel, first published in 1999 under her real name, Madeleine Wickham. Milly is about to marry the man of her dreams. The son of a successful millionaire business man, her future seems assured. Okay, so Simon and his father don’t get on, and he insists on making his own way in the world without any help, but he dotes on Milly and she loves him. A society wedding is planned complete with giant marquee, oysters, a cake which arrives in 10 boxes, and two giant ice swans.

But then the wedding photographer arrives to stay at her parents’ B&B. He and Milly recognise each other, though at first she doesn’t know from where. When the penny drops Milly is struck with fear. A chance encounter on a college lawn in Oxford ten years ago when she was a naïve 18-year-old had led to a rash decision which now has ramifications and threatens to bring her dream wedding crashing down. Can she find a way to fix this, or will she have to tell Simon the truth? A slow burner that picks up pace as it progresses. In Milly the author created a very different protagonist compared with Becky in her later Shopaholic books. Milly has flaws so she’s less immediately likeable than Becky. And the novel lacks some of the frivolity of the classic chiclit genre but this is not necessarily a bad thing, and it is interesting to see how an author’s style develops with time. The theme is ‘Best of British’, this covers everything from the Queens

90th birthday to our very own Tim Peake who is currently on the ISS. The day always provides fantastic entertainment and no less so this year. Float ideas suited to the theme are floating in and six streets have signed up for the Giant Carnival Street Party, planned for the fete. Splat the Rat, Egg Throwing, Gnome Ringing, tackling the Thame Scouts climbing wall and Human Table Football (courtesy of the Cross Keys pub) are just some of the fun-events planned for the day. There will also be a beer tent, run by Thame Round Table, and a Pimms Tent, run by Lord Williams Association, as well as pizza, burger, cake and sweet vendors. Proceeds from this year’s carnival will go towards ‘That Bid Kid’ which is a charity set up to celebrate the life of Megan Biddle, a popular young lady from Thame who tragically lost her life far too soon. Through fundraising activities Megan’s friends and family hope to commission a unique memorial bench which has been designed to reflect her individuality and infectious personality. Visit www.thatbidkid.com for more information on the charity. Email Sue Martin-Downhill on thamecarnival@gmail.com for more information about the Carnival or to get involved.

Traditional Village Fun in Aston Rowant Fete on Sunday 10th July Aston Rowant Fete will be back again this year on Aston Rowant Green on Sunday 10th July from 12-2.30pm. There will be all the fun you’d expect from a traditional village fete including: a jazz band, Pimm’s tent and BBQ, tombola, cream teas, bouncy castle, children’s games, face-painting and lots more! There will be an auction of promises through the generosity of villagers and local businesses. Last year’s prizes included a half day boat cruise, Towersey Festival Tickets, Golf Day, a massage and a bicycle, so it’s well worth putting your bids in! The Fete is organised by volunteers from the PTA

20

at Aston Rowant Primary School and is one of the school’s main fundraising events of the year. It raised £3,188 in 2015, which helped build the school’s new all-weather sports pitch, making a huge difference to the sporting opportunities for the children.

GET WARMED UP FOR RACE FOR LIFE IN OXFORD THIS SUMMER With

summer just around the corner, Oxford women are being urged to channel their energy into training for Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. With the arrival of lighter evenings and warmer weather, women of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities have the perfect opportunity to kick-start a healthier lifestyle by preparing for their 5k, 10k or Pretty Muddy Race for Life events. By taking on Race for Life, and encouraging their mums, daughters, sisters and friends to join them, participants can improve their fitness as well as help to raise money for life-saving research to fund research to help beat 200 types of cancer. Becoming more active has longer-term benefits, as research shows that even regular, moderate physical activity can help reduce the risk of cancer. Not only does it help to maintain a healthy body weight but it also has a protective effect in itself. And that’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on women in Oxford to get moving, lace up their trainers and sign up now for the 5k and 10k events taking place on Sunday 10th July at University Parks. Alternatively, for those women feeling a little more adventurous Cancer Research UK are also hosting a Pretty Muddy 5k on Saturday

17th September at South Park. Kelly Rumble, Cancer Research UK’s Oxford Event Manager, said: “Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast. It’s about an army of women crossing the finish line together in the fight against cancer. Whether you’re a running pro or novice, every step you take around the course will help bring us one step closer to the day when all cancers are cured.” More than one in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Survival rates have doubled since the early 1970s. Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across Oxfordshire. Free training plans for different levels of ability are available on the Race for Life website. The six-week training plans are designed for walkers, joggers or runners. They feature guidance on warming up and stretching, as well as motivation. To enter Race for Life today go to www.raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.

Have a ‘quacking’ time on the river on 12th June!

E

very year on the morning after Thame Carnival, Thame & District Round Table takes to Thame river and stages their annual duck race. This ‘fun-for-all’ event has become a family favourite in Thame’s calendar and regularly attracts a vast crowd. The race is in essence a giant floating lottery, which involves dropping more than 2,000 individually numbered rubber ducks into the River Thame. If you have bought a ticket with a number that matches one of the first three ducks over the line, you win a cash prize. All other proceeds from the ticket sales are donated to local causes. Adding to the fun is the irrepressible pirate, Captain Ducky, who follows the ducks down river in his floating creation of choice. This year’s duck race takes place on Sunday 12th June, starting on the old town bridge, which is accessed from the bottom of Priest End, behind St Mary’s church. Gates open at 10.30am and the race will start at 11.00.

on the Mic... Emusic groups or events in the area and finding very month we will be focussing on particular

out more about our local musicians. In this issue we are going to focus This month we are going to focus on John Reid-Hansen, a local musician, tutor and community supporter.

Q: How did your interest in music start?

A

: My Father was a sea cadet officer and ran a very successful marching band so our house was often full of drums and bugles being played very loudly and with varying amounts of success, I also sang in the local church choir and became head choir boy. All of that gave me an understanding of the structure and discipline of music but it was when I was 11 and my sister had a boyfriend (Called Dave Hunt) that my love of the guitar started. He was a mod with a Lambretta scooter and he gave me a “lesson” on his guitar. My first tunes were “Pictures of matchstick men” by Status Quo and “I can’t get no satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones.

Q: Who influenced you musically?

A

: By the time I was 15 I was in a rock-n-roll band called “Pegasus” and we did all the favorites from the 1950’s and 60’s. I love writing music and Paul Simon, Don McLean and Lennon & McCartney had a huge influence on me. I revel in the way that music can create atmosphere and emotion and how playing music can bring so much pleasure to so many people. I guess I’m influenced by any bands, orchestras and songwriters that have the ability to touch the emotions.

Q A

: How did you get into teaching?

: By the time I was 16 I had several “pupils”. My own education wasn’t great as I’m dyslexic and in those days it wasn’t commonly recognised or even known about so I experienced dreadful teasing and bullying. Because of that I have a lot of patience with pupils of all ages, especially when they are struggling to grasp a new concept. I can’t remember how I first started to teach guitar in a serious way as it’s so long ago but I think it was born on the desire to help people to succeed and fulfill their dreams and I would say that is still my main motivation.

Q A

:What What are you involved in locally?

: I teach Guitar and Drum Kit at Griffin House School and Guitar in John Hampden and Testworth Schools as well as owning my own studio in which I teach guitar and drums to pupils of all ages. I’m in a function band called Tay O’Lay and we perform at wedding receptions, parties and local events. I’m also learning to be a bell ringer (which, I have discovered, is more difficult than it looks!).

Q A

: How did your band start and what are the plans for the future?

: I had always wanted to be in a high quality function band and about five years ago I started to try out some ideas with some friends and gradually Tay O’Lay came into being. Several people have joined and moved on over the years but we now seem to have settled into a pretty solid band. We do a lot of vocal harmony as well as playing a wide variety of songs. Combined with a slightly off the wall sense of humour we usually enjoy our gigs as much as the people who employ us!

Q A

: How can you be contacted for lessons?

: If you Google John Reid-Hansen my name should come up straight away and you will be directed to www.noddingsnail.com - the name of my studio. You will also be able to find a link page to Tay O’Lay.

Thame Players return to The Elms, Upper High Street, Thame in July for an openair Shakespeare production in the 400th anniversary year of the Bard’s death. It follows their highly successful ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ held in the same location back in 2014. This time, they’re staging Shakespeare’s Macbeth and we caught up with the play’s Director, Chris Parker to tell us a bit more about what the audience can expect... How would you sum up the play and your approach?

It’s set in eleventh-century Scotland and our production will be authentic, complete with costumes consistent with the period – not a modern interpretation, as is often done these days. Essentially I see Macbeth as a thriller - it takes you on a nail-biting journey into the dark realms of human nature, while showing you the impact of human frailty and a lust for power on characters caught up in a tempest of their own making. The supernatural plays its part too, complete with witchcraft. I’m sure it will keep the audience on tenterhooks throughout.

What’s your own background and why is it suited to this production?

I’ve produced and funded six other outside Shakespeare productions at locations including the Chiltern Open-Air Museum. I’ve worked on Shakespearean projects at the Old Vic Theatre, Leeds Castle and St John’s Smith Square. I’ve also spent time at the Globe Theatre, London with Sam Wannamaker and had three years working with the late Cedric Messina, the well-known TV and stage producer. For Thame Players I’ve directed Present Laughter, How the Other Half Loves and Blithe Spirit.

Who have you chosen to play the lead roles?

Macbeth is played by Ryan Whitney, who has performed in both amateur and professional productions and his previous experience includes playing King George in The Madness of King George, Caliban in The Tempest and Guildenstern in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Ryan has the knack of bringing out the sinister nastiness in characters. Lady Macbeth is played by Abi Tester, a long-standing member of Thame Players who has plenty of experience as a character actor, playing powerful, emotionally charged roles including Joy in Shadowlands and Doňa Rosita in Lorca’s Doňa Rosita.

What’s involved in preparing for a show like this?

Rehearsals are already underway - two evenings and one afternoon every week until the show opens. There’s also a lot of infrastructure work to do, including scaffolding, raked seating, sound and lighting, as well as various licences and insurance. It’s a costly show to put on, and we’re very grateful for the support of all our sponsors.

What facilities will be available?

There will be undercover seating for audiences, so rain won’t be a problem. You can bring a picnic, but refreshments will also be available, including a bar with local beer from XT Brewery, wines, soft drinks and tea or coffee. Local caterer Kirsty’s Kitchen will provide hot and cold food every day or you can look at the menu and pre-order a choice of ‘Macbeth’ or ‘Macduff’ picnics. Call her on 01844 202685.

How can you get hold of tickets?

Macbeth will be held at 32 The Elms, Upper High Street, Thame OX9 2DN from Tuesday 5th – Saturday 9th July inclusive. There are five evening performances at 7.45 pm and a matinee at 2.30 pm on Saturday (doors open from 6.15 pm daily and from 1.00 pm on Saturday). Tickets cost £10 and £9 (concessions) from Spear Travels, telephone 01844 217228, or you can book online at www.thameplayers.co.uk

Restaurant Review If you’re looking for quality fine dining combined with a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere then look no further than Bluebella Roo’s at The Green Dragon in Haddenham.

T

his 18th Century, Grade II listed watering hole has recently been reopened under the new ownership of Kate Duffy and her partner Matt Wood (the venues very talented Head Chef) who along with their enthusiastic and passionate team look to provide a friendly, welcoming haven for locals and visitors alike. Having previously owned Bluebella Roo’s, a fine dining restaurant in Berkhampstead, Matt, who was locally trained as a chef at Aylesbury College, was keen to bring his unique style and flair of preparing restaurant quality food to the Green Dragon whilst still retaining the muddy boots welcome, dogs allowed (in the bar area), family friendly, local village pub feel. This has been achieved by the warm reception you receive as soon as you walk through the door and reflected in the pub inspired menu which includes choices such as Pan Roasted Duck Breast, Best End of Lamb and proper pub classics like Dry Aged Ribeye Steak and Cornish Haddock Fish & Chips. It is however the accompaniments the dishes are served with and the way in which the food is presented that sets it apart from your average pub. The quality locally sourced produce is presented so elegantly it almost looks too beautiful to eat! I put the emphasis here on ‘almost too good to eat’ – because as soon as the fragrant aromas of the cuisine hit my nostrils all my senses were set alive and I couldn’t wait to tuck into the delicate feast which adorned our table.

To tease our palate whilst we awaited our three-course A La Carte experience we snacked on Smoked Salmon, Nori and Mouli Tacos. This was a combination of smoked salmon, seaweed and caviar wrapped in a Japanese radish, which was creamy yet crisp and light with a citrus kick – the perfect appetiser. We also decided to sample the breadbasket with balsamic oil, which included a selection of white and wholemeal choices, our favourite of them was the sultana & walnut bread. The sweetness of the fruit combined with the sharpness of the balsamic vinegar was a real treat on the tastebuds. What followed was our picture perfect starter of Blow-Torched Scallops, Fennel Puree, Orange, Black Sesame Seeds & Rock Samphire decorated with edible Borage and Wild Garlic Flowers. This dish really is a work of art from the beautiful presentation down to the explosion of flavours and textures bursting through every bite, and the scallop was so velvety, the knife slide through it like butter and then melted in the mouth! For our mains we opted for Best End of Lamb, Aubergine Caviar, Potato Fondant, Provencal Vegetables, Olives, Heritage Tomatoes and Dry Aged Ribeye Steak, Triple Cooked Chips, Watercress, Au Poivre Sauce both of which were cooked to perfection. My lamb in particular was succulent and the use of fresh Rosemary complemented the dish and balanced the flavours. The chefs have portion control down to a tee as both myself and my colleague (Hayley) had room for dessert and how could we not! Having just eaten one of the tastiest and artistic meals we have

Food & Drink ever experienced we were excited about our sweet treat to complete the hat trick. A Chocolate Delice with Salted Caramel, Crunchy Walnuts, & Raspberry Sorbet and a Pecan Tart with Granny Smith Ice Cream & Maple Syrup was the order of the day for us. The highlights of these dishes were the black plate, which framed the heavenly Delice making it look like a painting, and the taste was similar to a selection of indulgent, luxurious chocolates as all the different flavours came through. The Pecan Pie was sublimely balanced with nuts vs. treacle harmoniously encased in its delicate flaky pastry base with the pierre de resistance being the cider apple ice cream. This gave the dessert a whole new dimension turning it from what would usually be a warming winter comforter to the ideal summer pud! This is a dessert that Mary Berry would be proud of – no soggy bottoms here – and if table manners didn’t apply we would have licked our plates clean. As well as the A La Carte menu, The Green Dragon offers a Set Lunch Menu for the very reasonable price of £14.95, Bar Snacks, Sandwiches, a Sunday Roast and a Coffee Morning every weekday from 9am – Noon. There is also a great selection of real ales, specialist spirits and award winning wines to choose from and they can cater for private functions and exclusive venue hire if required.

GET THE LOOK the benefits of an outside kitchen

By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd

Building an outdoor kitchen may sound like an extravagant way to celebrate the sunshine, but there are many reasons why they are increasing in popularity across the UK – here at Coulon Stone we have fitted three already this year.

Primarily, outdoor kitchens are about spending less time inside cooking on your own, and more time enjoying the sunshine with your family and friends – so be mindful of this when designing the space. Details like having a bar style top where your guests can sit whilst you cook, or including seating around a pizza oven, make for a wonderfully inclusive area. Whilst some people create fully equipped chef stations complete with fridge freezer and range cooker, a simple food-prep and grilling area would be equally as enjoyable. Invest in a sturdy stone worktop granites, marbles and limestones all work perfectly - along with a good sink, grill and mini fridge. Since the materials used are weather resistant, you’ll have a life-long entertainment space. Outdoor living encourages us to spend more time outside and be friendlier with nature. Use natural materials, earthy colours and even recycled pieces to unite it with your surrounding garden. Whether you want to go over the top, keep it simple or somewhere in the middle, expanding your living space with an outdoor kitchen will always be a welcome addition to your home – and may even add value.
