Administering an estate: The role you didn’t want Whether you’ve been appointed as an executor of a loved one’s Will, or are thinking about what will happen with your own estate when the time comes, are you aware of the importance of this role and the responsibility it entails? Unfortunately, we are all likely to experience the loss of a loved one at some point during our lives. Dealing with this bereavement can be a highly emotional and stressful process, with many people not realising the amount of important work that needs to be done after someone has passed away. One such task is to administer the estate of the person who has died and apply for probate. This process involves identifying all of their assets (such as property, savings and investments) and any liabilities (things like mortgages or credit card bills) as well as applying for probate as you may already know. These will all need to be dealt with so that whatever is left can be distributed to the people named in the person’s Will, known as the beneficiaries. Each estate is different but some of the work that the executor will probably need to complete includes:            

Completing all Inheritance Tax forms Applying for probate or confirmation Income Tax work for the year of death Valuing assets Property valuation and sale Specialist buildings insurance Postal redirection Arranging for a pet to be re-homed Cancelling or transferring utilities Settling all liabilities Distributing funds to beneficiaries Producing estate accounts

Have a ‘quacking’ time on the river on 11th June!

Every

year on the morning after Thame Carnival, Thame & District Round Table takes to Thame river and stages their annual duck race. This ‘fun-for-all’ event has become a family favourite in Thame’s calendar and regularly attracts a vast crowd. The race is in essence a giant ﬂoating lottery, which involves dropping more than 2,000 individually numbered rubber ducks into the River Thame. If you have bought a ticket with a number that matches one of the first three ducks over the line, you win a cash prize. All other proceeds from the ticket sales are donated to local causes.

This year’s duck race takes place on Sunday 11th June, starting on the old town bridge, which is accessed from the bottom of Priest End, behind St Mary’s church. Gates open at 10.30am and the race will start at 11.00.

Local dance group light up the stage at the royal albert hall

The Performanze dancers have excelled at another major event, and this time the Royal Albert Hall was the scene of their conquest. On Sunday 23 April, the London Marathon wasn’t the only major participation event in the capital, as Performanze’s biggest squad yet – of 45 dancers – took part in an event run by Mardi Gras, the UK’s leading show producers for young dancers. With 45 perfect buns, and 45 pairs of eyes adorned with individually placed gems, sparkly costumes at the ready, the dancers took to the stage and rocked the dance routine they had been practising for almost a year. Dancers aged from 5 to 18 took part in an imaginatively choreographed routine that used up all the space on stage and in the round of the venue, showing off some great moves and lifts to the tune of ‘Dancin’ Fool’ from Barry Manilow’s ‘Copacabana’ Musical. It was a hectic, tiring and exhilarating day, especially for the younger team members, with practices starting at 11.30am for the 6pm show. All the dancers behaved impeccably backstage, and there was a great team spirit as everyone pulled together to get through the long day. Twenty two schools from around the UK took part, and when each school had performed individually, it was time for the grand finale. What an amazing sight, with 1300 dancers moving in a remarkably coordinated fashion, given that the finale routine was only learned on the day. It was amazing to see the sheer number of enthusiastic and talented dancers fill the available space in the 5,000 seater venue. It was a great day out for parents and supporters too, with some very appreciative audience reactions. And what next for Performanze Squad?

The next event is already booked at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End, and there have been rumours of a return to Disneyland Paris – watch this space! It took me a while as I was very shy and unmotivated but eventually I made the decision I would be a singer - that was when I was 19. I then learned guitar and have been performing now for over 21 years!

Fibromyalgia, Myalgic Encephalitis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ... Fibromyalgia (FM) and the related conditions of Myalgic Encephalitis (ME) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are massively debilitating. It is difficult to provide a definitive diagnosis given that symptoms can be related to many other conditions, such as Lupus. Investigations can prove time consuming, with a process of elimination, and criteria for the patient to have experience at least 3 months in pain. This process can be very stressful. There are no lab tests or X-rays that are able to identify this chronic condition. Once given a diagnosis the patient is faced with no effective conven-tional medical solution. There is no clear cause and no clear solution. Many of my clients present in my clinic with either a diagnosis of MF, ME, CFS or with symptoms and issues that can match any of these conditions. The history, for each, is usually the same: ‘I’ve been to the doctors, I’ve had tests (bloods), I’m in pain, my lifestyle is limited, I’m off work’ or ‘ The prescribed painkillers aren’t helping and I’m not sure about taking antidepressants” and ‘I was referred to a pain clinic but really the exercises are too much for me’, and I was told to manage the pain’ Some patients are told that they imagine the pain. This is such a common scenario in my clinic, generally the clients I see are female, although children and teenagers present with the same issues. For each this is a long term chronic disorder.

SUMMER HEARING I

t’s been a long cold winter and at Aston Hearing we are looking forward to a summer of barbeques, festivals and summer holidays. With fun activities and (hopefully!) good weather to enjoy, taking time to think about your ears and hearing will help you to make the most of the summer months without worrying about developing problems later on. Swimming is one of the best parts of a summer holiday, but you need to watch out for ear infections from dirty water. ‘Swimmer’s ear’ is a common infection that causes ear pain, itchiness and some temporary hearing loss. Frequent exposure to water can irritate the ear canal and make it more vulnerable to inﬂammation. Usually these infections are cleared up easily with antibiotic drops, but if you swim regularly and your ear canal is often exposed to water, you may find that the infection returns. If you like to surf or do other water sports in the summer, you may also be at risk of ‘surfer’s ear’. This is where cold water causes bony growths to develop inside the ear canal, which over time blocks the ears and reduces hearing. If the problem becomes severe, you may need surgery to correct it.

Festival season is another great part of the summer, but your hearing could be at risk when listening to very loud music. Some noise levels at concerts can reach 120dB – the equivalent to a jet plane taking off! At this level, your hearing could be permanently damaged within minutes. If you have ever noticed ringing or buzzing in your ears after a gig it could be a sign of noise damage. These noises and mufﬂed hearing are usually temporary, but over time you could live with constant tinnitus and permanent hearing loss. Our customised plugs for noise protection are a great option for listening to live music without risking your hearing. The filter allows for all frequencies to be reduced equally, so the sound quality will stay exactly the same, just with the effect of turning down the volume. By wearing protection, you reduce your risk of noise damage and make sure that you can continue to enjoy music for years to come.

All-New Peugeot 3008 SUV 1.2 GT Line

It is not unusual to see some big changes between an older and newer generation of the same model, but the all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV looks radically diﬀerent to the outgoing one.

hat exiting generation, introduced in 2008, was a frumpy, chubby SUV that did little to inspire buyers. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV, though, is a different animal, burying the clumsy image of the last car six-feet under and achieving the European Car of the Year crown. Sometimes it can be difficult to separate SUVs out on the road because most of them drive alike. Many are set up for comfort, and that’s what the all-new 3008 is tuned for. The small steering wheel and light handling gives a feeling of sprightliness, even if that’s not the case, as it’s a tall, heavy car. However; that’s not a complaint, the designers and engineers have done a good job covering the traditional flaws of an SUV’s dynamics. There’s a wholesome medley of engines on offer, as with most Peugeot models: two petrols in the shape of a 131PS 1.2-litre unit and a 165PS 1.6-litre turbo. Then there are a couple of turbo diesel engines of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre capacity. What suits you best is largely going to depend on what sort of driving you do. Short urban trips suit the 1.2-litre petrol more, whereas longer journeys will fit the potential 70mpg obtainable from the 1.6-litre diesel. I drove the 1.2 petrol in GT Line spec with 131PS, fitted with a manual gearbox. Behind the wheel, things feel dynamic, and the weighting of the steering is spot on. The car grips bitumen like a cat’s claws cling to flesh, and mid-range pulling power is good, so you can pick up the pace easily. The six-speed transmission is slick shifting, and the car delivers a hushed ride. Tyre roar and wind whistle is kept out of the cabin, too. All this just adds to the 3008’s sense of refinement. The Peugeot offers a composed ride with seats that provide the sort of comfort and support required for long distance motoring. Furthermore, the car’s suspension sops up potholes without complaining. Significantly, the all-new 3008 doesn’t tip into bends. Indeed, body roll is very well contained. This surprised me, as smaller SUVs aren’t always the type of vehicle to stay so unflustered on twisty tarmac. The new 3008 comes in four levels of trim: Active, Allure,

GT Line and GT. Factory fitted safety kit includes automatic emergency braking and rear parking sensors. The GT Line hasn’t got any extra safety equipment - just sportier looks. But it has all the safety kit you really need, and as with all 3008s, it has a top five-star Euro NCAP safety score. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV’s entry price is £21,795, but expect to fork out £25,655 for the petrol-powered GT Line I drove. A basic Nissan Qashqai costs £18,545, and the new SEAT Ateca is priced from £17,990. But I think the 3008’s extra cost is justified because it feels more upmarket inside than these two rivals. It’s all very contemporary, attractive inside and is just as stylish outside, plus it drives well, while delivering a comfortable ride for all.
