GET THE LOOK Creating a staycation spot... A

re you longing to escape? Yearning for that unique sense of complete relaxation and peace only a holiday can bring? You don’t have to jet off to de-stress in a peaceful, seductive space. Make the most of summer, and your home by turning your outside space in to a staycation spot by applying familiar holiday essentials – relaxation, entertainment and earthly elements. Start with a clean-up and then keep it low maintenance. Power-wash the patio, clean out the shed and get rid of moss and weeds. Cleaning will make the space more useable, welcoming and relaxing. And keeping the features low maintenance means less time stressing, and more time enjoying your garden. Include perennial plants that will return each year and quality stones that won’t require regular repair, like slate or granite, which both come in a variety of texture and colour finishes. Like your home, create zones. An outdoor cooking space complete with a natural stone work surface and BBQ or pizza oven, a dining space and a lounge area. Invest in good quality outdoor furniture in a style that you love and want to use. Use outdoor rugs and vibrant cushions to create a cosy lounge space. Use bright plants, colourful pots and a brightly painted wall or fence to add movement and that sense of fun you feel on holiday. Having the open sky above gives you space to you use bold and bright designs. Also include a weatherproof speak system to enjoy music outside and create a space for activities and games – croquet, bat and ball or boules. Moving about releases happy hormones. A holiday’s not complete without fire or water. They draw people in and allow us to escape. A natural stone fire pit means you can use your garden for longer and encourages everyone to gather round and enjoy the outside. A water feature or pond encourages nature to the garden and creates a sense of calm. Get in touch with Coulon Stone for ideas on how to use natural and composite stone in your staycation project.

Ask the Expert... This month’s question put to Rupert Hilton (MCIOB, AssocRICS, MScCHE, BA(Hons) via the Look Local Magazine facebook page is:

Q. Can I paint the Front Door of my Grade II Listed House?

The short answer to this question is yes, the real question though is would it require listed building consent? To answer this – as with any other planning related matter – we must once again define what makes the building in question special and enter the murky world of ‘heritage value’ and ‘significance’. The Planning, Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas Act (1990) Section 7 states: ‘..no person shall execute or cause to be executed any works for the demolition of a listed building or for its alteration or extension in any manner which would affect its *character as a building of special architectural or historic interest, unless the works are authorised.’ It doesn’t however make any reference to ‘repairs’* and generally it is accepted that maintenance and repair on a like-for-like basis does not required listed building consent (*Please note that neither

SAME DAY SKIP HIRE AND

GRAB SERVICE

‘character’ or ‘repair’ are defined in the legislation – which is where a lot of confusion comes from and why decisions often vary depending on the level of knowledge of the conservation officer).

So, the question you must ask yourself is would painting the door affect the building’s special architectural or historic interest? 9.5 times out of 10 on a grade II listed domestic property the answer is no - though there are buildings which retain particularly important or rare doors. I would normally encounter this issue on grade II* and I listed buildings. My personal view is that as long as you’re not using a paint that might damage the door or is in some way irreversible, then you should be fine. Colour is also ephemeral and subjective – the colour palettes used by the Georgians and Victorians look very garish to our tastes, but this doesn’t make them wrong - and British eccentricity is something we should all cherish.

Recipe

Cook with...

Karahi Lamb Serves 4

Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

2 tablespoons of Mama Dor’s Karahi Lamb Spice Blend* 500g lamb shoulder, cubed 1 large onion, diced 2 tablespoons natural yoghurt 2 tablespoons vinegar 2 tablespoons tomato puree 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 fresh chillies (optional)

Method: 1. Create a paste using the Spice Blend, yoghurt, tomato puree and vinegar. Add the lamb and leave to marinate for at least two hours, covered in the fridge. The vinegar may seem like a strange addition, but it works beautifully with lamb, adding a little tang but also tenderising the lamb. 2. When you’re ready to cook, take the marinated lamb out of the fridge and leave to sit at room temperature for 30mins. This is an important step to ensure the yoghurt doesn’t split when you add to the pan. 3. In a deep frying pan, brown off the onion with chillies (if using) in the olive oil. Once nicely brown, add the lamb mixture with about 100ml of tap water. Give it a good stir, cover and turn to a low heat. 4. Cook for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. The sauce will become thick and the lamb beautifully tender. Serve with warm naan bread or fluffy basmati rice. * Note: if you do not have the Mama Dor’s Karahi Lamb Spice Blend, you can substitute for a generic curry powder blend. It won’t be as aromatic or authentic but the method described above will give you tender lamb.

Mama Dor’s Kitchen provides a range of authentic Indian Spice Blends. All blends are sugar & gluten free and are suitable on a vegan diet. They are provided in a refillable glass spice jar and come with an easy to follow recipe card. There are over 15 blends to choose from, all created with family and ease of use in mind. So they are all mild and flavourful, and typically can be made using ingredients you already have in your store cupboard. The jars range from £5 to £10 each, with each jar containing enough Spice Blend for 12 servings. And when your jar is empty, bring it back for a refill, at a lower price.

If you’d like to try the Karahi Lamb recipe above, or any of the other delicious blends, visit www.mamadorskitchen.co.uk, and use offer code LOOKSPICES for a 15% discount off your first order. Offer ends 31st July 2019, and cannot be used in conjunction with any other discount.

Staying on Track

By Jemma Stevens of Flawsome Jem With the hope of summer on the way and those warm, light evenings, BBQ’s and parties, I wanted to share my tips for ‘not falling off the wagon’ as it were... 1. Really think about what it’s worth to you. Be selective as the snacks go round. If you love something-enjoy every bite. But don’t mindlessly pick on foods that don’t rock your world. It’s about learning to walk past a bowl of snacks and think - no, not worth it! 2. Practice the 2 - glass rule - if you stick to 2 glasses of fizz, you’re not going to topple into the space where all bets are off. I’m not saying, never but try it and see how you feel. At least alternate each glass of alcohol with a glass of water. You will thank me in the morning. 3. Eat before you go out-it took me years to learn this but it turns out my mum was right. A little protein rich snack just before you set off, line’s the stomach, so alcohol won’t hit you hard and spike those blood sugar levels. Plus you’re less likely to overeat.

5. Up the amount you walk- every little helps! Increase your pace or add in some hills if you want to balance out the extra beverages. 6. Late nights and early mornings take their toll- pay special attention to your digital detox and bedtime routine on your nights in, and find pleasure in indulging in some pamper time. Don’t let tiredness creep in or your healthy habits will slip. 7. Drink plenty of water-staying hydrated, not only helps you recover more quickly but also give you more energy and flush out those toxins. Remember, enjoy yourself, but think forward how do you want to feel come the morning? For support and motivation, from Flawsome Jem visit Instagram and Facebook:@Flawsomejem or www.flawsomejem.com

HOW OFTEN DO YOU GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP? According to the UK’s Sleep Council, 30% of us sleep poorly most nights. Be it difficulty getting to sleep, night time waking or poor quality sleep, it’s undeniable that a good night’s sleep makes a difference and that prioritising sleep can offer improvements in all aspects of life. In this article, Stephanie Clarkson, a multi-disciplinary therapist at Thame Therapy Clinic, discusses the importance of sleep and how she uses her specialist therapy expertise to help improve sleep and anxiety in adults and young people.

Scientific research shows connections between sleep and type

2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, anxiety and burn out. We live in an increasingly fast-paced world, with growing expectation to achieve more at a quicker pace and although we need more rest than ever, many of us are getting less and less. When deprived of sleep we are less efficient, less motivated and more prone to irritability and low mood. We are more likely to reach for caffeine, sugary foods and refined carbs. Coordination and thinking agility are reduced; our performance suffers. Many things can affect sleep. Irregular hours caused by travelling, shift work or an inconsistent lifestyle can confuse our body’s inner ‘clock’. Stress and anxious thinking habits can peak at night when we are less distracted. Breaks in sleep caused by caring for children, illness, snoring or other distractions can interrupt sleep cycles. As a hypnotherapist and coach I work with people to build a greater awareness of the lifestyle and thinking habits that can contribute to poor sleep and then make changes to allow for optimum sleep. If night-time thinking is an issue, it can be worth exploring worries and thinking habits to support a calmer, more confident mind that settles into and eases out of sleep. We spend a third of our lives in bed, and while most of us are aware of how well we sleep, it’s rare that we consciously manage our sleep or consider how to utilise our waking hours smarter to allow for a better quality of it. In my coaching work the approach may be practical, focused on time-management, thinking strategies and self care advice. Looking at the mental aspect of sleep can also be useful and can include hypnosis, EFT, mindfulness, meditation and breathing techniques. So ask yourself, how well does your sleep work for you, and is it time to give your sleep some TLC? Are you often in Pain? Pain is subjective; it may be specific and usually chronic. When you are at an all time low, a visit to your GP may not elicit anything more than an increase in pain medication along with anti depressive solutions. This generally occurs once all underlying conditions have been excluded and generally the quickest way to silence a pain is by taking drugs which is only a temporary measure at best…

So where do you go for help? The Bowen Technique is a gentle hands on, non invasive complementary therapy, which was introduced to the UK from Australia in 1992. Bowen Works with the body’s own healing systems. Rather than ‘making’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the balancing changes it needs. With fingers and thumbs the Bowen practitioner makes rolling movements over fascia, at precise points over the body. No hard tissue manipulation or force is used. In recent years I have extended my Bowen practice, with professional development courses from world-renowned tutors from Australia. I have TMJ and Hormone certification, skills to muscle test and apply appropriate procedures to the treatment, this is the NST (Neuro Structural Integrative Technique) part of my qualification and very much part of the Tom Bowen structure of treating. As A Bowen / NST practitioner my job is two fold: 1. To initially address your pain and / or address your pain and the issues you present with moving you to better physical and mental balance.

So, Bowen / NST treatments are hands on and endeavour to address the physical issues which you undoubtedly present with and are mostly relieved, however, I offer a full consultation, and take time to elicit a full medical history. With very many clients there are other issues that are flagged up that contribute to the PAIN scenario. My treatments are not prescriptive but often incorporate exercises, drinking water, postural changes and the use of Epsom Salts.

Testimonials As I write, I have had some wonderful comments from new clients this week... “I feel a million dollars’ I walked out of your clinic feeling so much better… mentally I am able to cope... with less (generalised) pain I can concentrate on bigger issues” “Thank you… I feel so different, I was able to walk to meet my grandchildren from school” “My teenager seems a less tense and ‘troubled’ child” “I’m not prepared to report a change… but I think my (debilitating) dizziness is subsiding” I look forward to my next appointments with these clients and am hopeful that sustainable changes are taking place! Please contact me for further information. Jen Webster Bowen, Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com T: 07768 188664

Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

2. To assist in guiding you to achieve the level of health to help you manage your specific lifestyle. It is, however, not my job to dictate terms, but to provide options. Physical therapy along will not always provide the perfect solution: ongoing clinical work often goes hand in hand with emotional and nutritional support and adequate hydration, all of which will depend on the willingness of the individual.

This month I will be exploring how meditation is practised in different cultures, and why it is so useful to try a range of meditation styles. We often think of Buddhism or yoga when we picture people meditating. In fact, some form of meditation exists in all spiritual traditions, including Christianity. Mindfulness meditation is a combination of breath focus and purposeful, present moment awareness that comes from Buddhism. Cultivation of specific emotions such as loving kindness or gratitude is also derived from Buddhism, as is ‘body scan’ where you pay attention to all parts of the body in turn. Mindfulness is fantastic for stress reduction, while body scan is great for pain management and deep relaxation. Buddhist meditation also uses mantra as does Vedic meditation (and related transcendental meditation). A mantra is a combination of sacred words that when repeated, either silently or in a chant, creates focus. Meditating with mantra allows you to leave your thinking mind behind, with chanting adding vibrational energy from sound that elevates your experience still further. Yoga meditation focuses on breath, sounds or objects; contrasting with the awareness encouraged in mindfulness. It usually follows the practice of ‘pranayama’ (breath control) that helps to prepare the body & mind and can be seen as meditation in its own right. It may include Tantric ideas such as connection with ‘chakras’ (energy centres) or ‘kundalini’ (life force), sometimes finishing with ‘yoga nidra’ (sleep meditation) lying down.

We have a wealth of experience provide support services for young and old to live a happy and productive life.

Several traditions bring guided visualisation to the mix. This is where the teacher guides you to visualise a series of particular images or a place, such as a beach or garden, where you can find peace while tapping into and nurturing particular emotions. It is similar to hypnosis, but without a specific therapeutic intention.

Editors Review High Wycombe welcomes an exciting new concept to the town in the form of The Massage Company, which is the only Membership based Massage Centre in the UK. I was recently invited along to experience one of their top class massages first hand and to meet the owner, Mark Coldham, to learn more about the company’s unique approach to bringing massage to the masses.

Regular massage is proven to help reduce stress, improve mental health, raise energy levels and alertness as well as assist in recovery from an injury or surgery, yet most of us only use the services of a massage therapist as part of a ‘pamper day’ or when that niggle in your back gets too uncomfortable to function properly. Why is this, when there are so many benefits to improve our health and wellbeing through having one? Prevention is better than cure and the ethos behind The Massage Company is to change consumer’s perception of receiving a massage as a ‘once in-a-blue moon treat’ to a ‘once a month necessity that you owe to your body to maintain good health’. They want to highlight the positive effects regular massage can have on different aspects of ones life and they do so by providing a competitively priced monthly membership offering top quality 50minute massages that fit perfectly into your day-to-day life from expertly trained therapists. Although all the therapists at The Massage Company have a background in the health and wellbeing industry, before they are employed by the company they are expected to undergo a specialist training programme, designed by John Holman, who is an industry pioneer and expert in the world of massage. During this intensive training programme therapists learn how each muscle group works in conjunction with massage to develop a technique that is totally unique to The Massage Company and proven to

be 50% more effective than the standard massage. Once fully trained all therapists will be able to offer members the same standard of massage across the board. There are 4 massage types to choose from; Deep Tissue: helps to release and reduce musculoskeletal pain and tension, and is particularly effective in helping with general back, neck, shoulder and leg pain. Classic Swedish: A great choice for those who are new to massage. The therapist will adapt the pressure to suit the customer (Light, Medium or Firm) and generally work the whole body to loosen muscles and remove toxins. Sports: This deeper muscle massage is typically associated with recovery from minor injuries, strains and sprains and is an excellent follow on from specialist work like physiotherapy or osteopathy.

June 2019 bed to circulate a relaxing scent around my head whilst the treatment was taking place. My therapist placed bolsters under my legs throughout the massage, a new concept for me, to help alignment the body. It’s amazing what a difference this made to the quality of the massage as my posture felt a lot more comfortable. I had a lot of work to be done as I was completely knotted in places that I didn’t even realise I was harbouring stress and tension. I found the whole experience extremely professional and I instantly felt uplifted afterwards and lighter.

Maternity: Ideal for ladies at all stages of pregnancy to help relax tense muscles, ease aches and improve circulation and mobility. The treatment is conducted by a fully qualified pre-natal (and post-natal) therapist, and a long maternity pillow is provided to ensure optimum comfort and security throughout. Upgrades options are also available which include, Hot Stones, Aromatherapy, Scalp Massage and a Foot Treatment. As a busy working (and highly stressed) mum of two I opted for the Deep Tissue Massage with the addition of the Aromatherapy. I was welcomed by my friendly and warming therapist who led me through to the treatment room, which is decorated in colours chosen for their calming qualities. The warm therapy beds are covered with sumptuously soft blankets and an aromatherapy diffuser was placed under the face cradle in the

The other thing that stood out to me whilst looking around the centre is that every tiny detail has been thought through to give clients a premium experience from the non-ticking clocks and tranquil colour scheme in the therapy rooms to the calming artwork adorning the walls in the corridors and the special, homemade blended oils used during the treatments. There’s 3 on offer, ‘Tension Relief’, ‘Motivation’ and ‘Calm & Relax’ (TMC – The Massage Company) - which are designed to be non-greasy so clients don’t feel like they need to go and shower after their treatment meaning members can opt to use their monthly massage before heading out for work drinks on a Friday after a busy week in the office, during a shopping trip in the town, or even during a lunch break. I think this concept of a Monthly Massage Membership is a fantastic idea and one that we should all incorporate into our lives; we only get one body after all, it’s our duty to take care of it! The Massage Company, located at 1 Castle Street, High Wycombe, is open 7 days a week until late evening making it easy to fit in to everybody’s lifestyle.
