Local charity seeks Volunteers for busy summer holidays ... Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity are seeking temporary volunteers to help in their shops across Buckinghamshire over the busy summer holiday period. “With summer fast approaching, we are on the lookout for short-term ‘Summer Temp’ volunteers to help us run our shops during the busy summer period. Volunteering is a fantastic way to get out and meet new people as well as learn new skills. By giving your time in a Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity shop, you are doing something very special for someone else,” says Lily Caswell, Head of Retail at the Charity. “Our Shop Managers provide all volunteers with full support and training and it’s a great opportunity for those that might be back from university, in-between jobs, retired or just want to help support your local community. So, if you can spare a few hours a week between June and September, please sign up as a Summer Temp volunteer – we’d love to meet you.” The Charity has shops based in Aylesbury on the High Street, Broadfields and Walton Court, Chinnor, Haddenham, Thame, Wendover, Buckingham and Winslow as well as an online retail team based at their Furniture Showroom in Aylesbury. Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford

June’s plant in focus is Iris Germanica... Its common name is the German Bearded Iris, which doesn’t do the plant justice! Conjuring images of beer festivals with rosy, hairy-faced men, not unromantic granted! However, I prefer the Greek association with the genus name Iris who was the goddess of the rainbow. Now that inspires! You can see their silken flowing robes and the spectrum of colours of these resplendent towering plants in the bright light of our first summer weeks. In fact, by now Iris germanica have mostly performed their socks off in our gardens during the month of May. Shrivelling their petals inward to protect the future in seeds within; heroines indeed! So, you may ask, why are they June’s plant in focus? Well, I am passionate about sharing the horticultural whys and wherefores of maintenance as well as pontificating about the joy of plants and 6 weeks after flowering is the time to tend to them should you wish to divide and multiply your early spring garden goddesses. A good clump of Iris germanica with its thick rhizomes baking in the sun will do well for 5 -7 years. But their flower power performance will progress to the more virile and juvenile growths that spread along their rhizomes outwards from the centre of the plant. Leaving a central clump that shrivels and dies. They are best lifted and divided now with plenty of growing season left in order to get established in their new position before our long wet cold winters. Heralding from Mediterranean Europe they prefer a well drained and sunny position. If you have a heavy clay soil plant their so rhizomes are proud of ground level, with loose sandy soils they will make their way to the soil’s surface. You can also plant on them on a mound either way make sure you get the soil around their tendril like roots to ensure they anchor themselves in order to support those long sail like leaves which you will need to cut in half now to help reduce wind rock. They will take a few years to establish from the smaller divisions but when they do they are a marvel in the spring garden.

With love, Lucie

What is Composite Quartz? By Coulon Stone explains Quartz is the most abundant mineral on Earth, and it’s also one of the hardest. Over 60 years ago early manufacturers of composite quartz saw it’s potential as a hardy surface material, and since its conception have been proved right, as it has rivalled natural counterparts, like marble and granite, as one of the world’s most popular surface materials for homes and businesses.

Composite quartz was first developed in the 1960s by Italian company Breton

S.p.a. Breton discovered that pressing polymer resins into natural quartz crystals and applying heat created a solid surface. This innovative process meant that an abundant mineral could now be formed in to a hard, usable surface. As an engineered product it also meant that they could create a number of colours depending on the pigment added and varying textures and grain sizes. It also meant that things like glass could be used for added sparkle. Breton continue to be a leading supplier of composite quartzmaking equipment today. There are many benefits to choosing composite quartz, which is why it continues to be a popular choice for kitchen worktops, bathroom floors, shower trays and walls, and even staircases and commercial flooring. Composite quartz is engineered to be a highly durable, low maintenance surface, resistant to chips, stains, watermarks and burns. It’s easy to clean and its low porosity limits bacterial growth. As an engineered product each slab is uniform and many customers favour this over natural stones which come with unique markings. These days engineering has advanced and many composite quartz company’s make products which imitate natural stones like marble, meaning customers can get the clean and classic look of marble with higher durability properties and lower maintenance.

If you’re interested in using composite quartz for your project, please contact us on 01494 484333. W: www.coulonstone.com | IG: @coulonstoneltd| FB: @coulonstoneltd
