Welcome
Hello Readers, What a fantastic time to live in our beautiful region as Thame was recently announced as a ‘Rising Star’ in the national ‘Great British High Street’ competition. This fantastic accolade was then followed by an announcement from Royal Town Planning Institute that Thame is the winner in the south-east category of ‘Top Ten Greatest Places in England’ - what an achievement - but how much better would it be to announce Thame as the overall winner...

MOTORING:in the Spotlight... Audi A4 Saloon – First Drive By Tim BarnesClay, road test Journalist for Confused.com.
If you are after kudos in the executive car market then four shiny silver circles should do it for you The Audi logo of four interconnected rings will hoist your standing in the hierarchical world of enterprise in a heart-beat.
Get in to any diesel or petrol fuelled Audi and you will soon see
that the Bavarian based firm’s spotlight is on workmanship, fine quality and leading edge technology. The all-new A4 3.0 TDI Saloon in S Line trim that I drove at its recent launch was no different. The A4, with its elegance, sportiness and emotional appeal, forms the centrepiece of the Audi make, and this year the car has become even more defined. At 4.73 metres long and with a wheelbase of 2.82 metres – the fresh Audi A4 Saloon has a confident stance on the road. A prominent horizontal line on the front and rear emphasises the car’s width. Indeed, the flowing design with concise lines communicates the sporty elegance of the brand. Compared with the previous model, the A4’s dimensions have grown but its weight has been reduced significantly – by up to 120 kilograms, depending on the engine. The body of the new Audi model is one of the lightest in its class, thanks to an intelligent material mix and lightweight construction. The Audi A4 is a leader in its segment also in terms of noise levels, too. There is generous space and the smooth lines emphasise the width of the interior. The front of the dashboard features a broad band of air outlets and a large decorative surface. At night, discreet contour lighting illuminates the doors and the central console. The quality of workmanship is uncompromisingly high. Furthermore, the Saloon offers an abundance of intelligent technologies, the use of which is even more intuitive with the new Audi MMI display and control concept. Technological highlights of the new A4 include a virtual cockpit, Matrix LED headlights, a smartphone interface, a Bang & Olufsen Sound System with 3D sound, a phone box with wireless charging, a head-up display, and new driver assistance systems, as well as Audi connect services. Behind the wheel, the handling of the new A4 3.0 TDI Saloon makes a great leap forward. The suspension and steering filter out disturbances such as an uneven road surface, but communicate important information such as increases in lateral forces and
06
@carwriteups
tracking. This performance is based on the redeveloped five-link axles and the electromechanical power steering. They lay the foundation for dynamic handling and first-class ride comfort while also reducing fuel consumption. Additional options are dynamic steering, which varies its ratio according to the car’s speed and the steering angle, and suspension with adjustable shock absorbers with which you can, for the first time, select between two settings: sports or comfort. What’s more, CO2 emissions on the 3.0 TDI are only 134g/km, and an average of up to 55.4mpg can be teased from the tank. This means the all-new Audi A4 is made for milemunching and so, along with its classy image, will serve any senior manager who ‘lives on the road’ extremely well indeed.

IN THE KITCHEN Chocolate Dipped Honeycomb
To make these choc olatey treats, you will ne ed;
70g golden syrup 70g butter 150g caster sugar 2tsp bicarbonate of soda 100g dark chocolate 50g milk chocolate and 50g white chocolate
After an indulgent quick bake to whip up this weekend? Look no further; these honeycomb shards dipped in chocolate are the perfect partner to a cosy Saturday evening on the sofa, or alternatively would make a great side to after dinner coffee. Method for these Chocolatey Treats: 1.
Line a medium sized shallow lipped baking tin loosely with greaseproof paper and set aside.
2.
Put your syrup, butter and caster sugar together in a saucepan and place over a low/medium heat. Keep an eye on it and if the sugar is gathering in one place, tip the pan gently to break it up.
3.
After approximately 5 minutes, the sugar should have dissolved and you will be left with a light brown syrupy liquid.
4.
When you reach this stage, increase the heat and boil the mixture until it reaches a deep golden brown colour (this should take another 3-4 minutes).
5.
Once the golden honeycomb colour has been achieved, remove from the heat and quickly add the bicarbonate of soda. Mix swiftly with a wooden spoon to fully incorporate (at this stage the mixture will react with the bicarbonate and foam up to form that bubbly honeycomb texture) and tip straight out onto the greaseproof
08
paper. Leave for half an hour to harden. 6.
Once set, snap up the honeycomb into bite-size shards. Set aside.
7.
Now, take your milk and dark chocolate and place in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Gently melt and leave to cool a little (I like to combine a little milk chocolate with the dark for added sweetness, but you could just use dark). Meanwhile, melt the white chocolate in the same way.
8.
Dip the honeycomb into the dark/milk chocolate and set down on greaseproof paper. Drizzle the white chocolate over and, if you like, use a skewer to drag into a feathered pattern. Leave to set then devour!
Enjoy!

COME DINE WITH ME!
tips for a stress free dinner party
Christmas will be here before you know it which means it’s dinner party season. If you’re anything like me and my friends then you will love nothing more (especially at this time of year) than inviting your nearest and dearest over for good food and pleasant conversation over a bottle of your favourite tipple. This said, it can become very stressful for you if you are the hostess. Here are a few tips to help you relax and enjoy the evening just as much as your guests.
PREP IN ADVANCE
Stick to dishes that you know and have cooked before, that way there’s no extra room for error. Chop, peel and assemble all that you can in advance of your guests arriving so that you can spend less time in the kitchen when your guests arrive. Ooo and don’t forget the dessert.
LAUGH IT OFF
Your guests aren’t expecting a Raymond Blanc quality meal. If you under cook the potatoes or burn the meat, don’t stress. So long as nobody gets food poisoning little mishaps like these make the party memorable and one your will reminisce over in years to come.
12
TAKE A BREAK
Remember these people are your friends and they want to see you and enjoy your company. So keep it casual and take shortcuts where possible. Simple appetisers such as crisps and dip are always a winner.
ENTERTAINMENT
Games are always good fun, especially when there’s wine involved. So set up the Wii and unleash your inner Britney on Singstar or get out your tablets and challenge your guests to a game of ‘Heads Up’ which is guaranteed to having you in stitches.
SET THE MOOD
Now I’m not talking rose petals at the door and
Barry White serenading your guests from the sound system, but a few candles and soft lightening will create a pleasant and relaxing ambience. And lets face it, we all look better when the lights are down low.
CLEAN AS YOU GO
If you’re not lucky enough to have a dishwasher, wash up as you go. This will eliminate the nightmare of being confronted with a mountain of dishes at the end of the night which is the last thing you want after an evening of fun! Failing this, call in the professionals.! Many party equipment hire companies, such as ‘Lay the Table’ (see advert), provide crockery etc which they will collect from you - unwashed - the day after your party. Score!!

SHARE THE LOAD
This is a fun activity that my friends and I do every year - the roaming dinner party where each of you pick a course to prepare and host at your house. One takes on the Starter, another the main and so on. Granted you can only partake in this way of dining if you live within close walking distance to one another but if you don’t, pick the friend who has the biggest dining space then each take your chosen course there. Not only is this great fun but it lightens the load for everyone.

These articles are designed to help small businesses survive and prosper in this increasingly tough world. Here are 7 skills/attributes the leader of a family business By Mark Tubb. should strive to have.
Business Mentor and Co-Director at Princes Risborough Golf Club
1. POSITIVE COMMUNICATION TECHNIQUES
Being open and transparent with those in the business regarding the good and the bad helps build resilience and trust. People feel nervous when they do not fully understand what is happening. Good communicators will also ensure that everybody understands what they need to do and when they need to do it and what the consequences or rewards from action or inaction will be.
2. COURAGE TO HAVE A ‘GO FOR IT ATTITUDE’
Small businesses need a leader who will assess risk but have the courage to do what is needed. Growth or change can be scary and potentially dangerous for a business. But so can stagnation. The Leader needs to be brave enough to assure others that “what we do will work” - for the family, employees, customers and the bank balance.
3. COMPOSURE
Being calm collected and consistent are essential qualities for every leader. It is crucial to be confident and in control but also to understand that other people (family, employees and customers) have different perspectives that need to be understood and considered. Sometimes their perspective can alter your perspective for the better. An open mind can be stronger than a blinkered one.
4. COMPETENCE
“Do your job” and let others do theirs (train them if they need it). You need to make key decisions when they need to be made. Pay close attention to detail but also learn to take a step back and keep the big picture in mind. Keep a close eye on costs but be ready to invest to grow at the right time.
5. CULTIVATE THE BIG PICTURE
Leaders envisage and then create the big picture; they must try to see it from the perspective of the business, the management, the employee and the customers etc. They must focus on the short and long-term goals that will support the business as far into the future as they can. They need to invest sensibly in those goals and persuade their team to work hard to make them achievable.
6. CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE
Leaders must have the drive to evolve both business and themselves. Skills can be learned. Instead of thinking ‘I cannot’ think ‘I’ll give it a go’ the secret is to start, give yourself a short period where you try it and you may be surprised at what you can achieve.
7. KEEPING STRESS LEVELS DOWN
Try to keep a good sense of humour as this will reduce stress levels, spend fun time together as a family group and as a business group. Most importantly enjoy together the journey you travel remembering that now is the only thing that is real. Each moment you pass moves into the past while you move forward.

Health & Wellbeing Business Matters What’s the current view on Interest Rates: The
economy continues to fight to grow but it’s an uphill struggle. Small businesses and the public remain nervous of an interest rate rise and this holds growth back. If and when the Bank Rate does begin to rise, it is expected to do so more gradually and to a lower level than in recent cycles. This is an expectation, not a promise. The actual path Bank Rates will follow over the next few years will depend on the economic circumstances that prevail.

FIX FALL IN LOVE WITH AUTUMN
BAG SOME BOOTS - Stock up on some good boots but try (just for me!) to steer away from black! Burgundy, petrol blue and forest green will lift a darker outfit and still work as a good neutral. MEN: This season’s boot to boast is the BROGUE BOOT - practical, smart and savvy.
ASOS | Mens | Leather Brogue Boots in Tan | £70.00
WOMEN: It’s all about CHUNKY which is great but there is a big STYLE RULE with chunky... MIND THE GAP or rather gaps! Between the hemline of your skirt or culottes and your boots and the one between your leg and the leg of the boot. If you’re not wearing them with skinny jeans then make sure there is enough of a gap to show off the style.

WARNING!
CAPE TIME - A sound investment if you stick to a strong, deeper neutral colour - grey or cream is a soft overlayer to any outfit.
The dark, sombre hues which become popular in the UK this time of year are easier to get wrong. Choosing incorrectly can drain our complexion, be ageing, enhance lines or shadows which is the last thing we need as we lose our summer glow.

Welcome to COLOURFIRST’s Autumn Wardrobe... This used to be my worst time of year, for all the obvious reasons, but being older and wiser I now embrace autumn and look at all the plus’ of what this season brings. Lighting the fire again, admiring the stunning colours surrounding us in nature, feeling more like drinking red wine instead of white and also the gorgeous Autumn/Winter collections that pour into the stores. So whilst the sun still occasionally shines and we try and hold on to a few colours before the darker months really creep in here’s my top tips on the ‘Must Have’ fashion items of the season. And remember I’m always on hand to help should you need guidance on what to pick off the rails and what to leave well alone on your next shopping trip... with love, Jo xx INVEST IN TROUSERS & SKIRTS IN KEY SEASONAL COLOURS

TOP TIP
Choose colours that enhance your natural colouring

WRAP UP WITH A WINTER COAT - There are some stunning overcoats, blanket coats and warm winter coats in the stores right now and at last there are colourful patterns, checks and prints which make a coat so more interesting. They are, by nature, a lot of material so double breasted, high collared and wide, large lapels are best suited to the petite or slim frame. How to overcome Dental Anxiety Many people suffer from some form of Dental Anxiety with 1 in 10 people avoiding their regular check up through fear of the procedure they might have to undergo whilst there. This makes it one of the most common phobias in the world with nearly a third of all adults disliking the dentist. Oral hygiene is incredibly important for our health so in this month’s article, Stokenchurch Dental Care, who specialises in the treatment of anxious and nervous patients, talk us through a few techniques to help you combat your fears.
Dental
anxiety can vary from mild nervousness to severe phobia and is therefore unique to each patient. For some it might be down to the dislike of loud drilling noises or the clinical environment of a dental practice, whereas for others it might link back to an unpleasant dental experience as a child.
At Stokenchurch Dental Care the practice has been specially designed with the nervous patient in mind. Painted with a soft colour palette and LCD screens adorning the walls playing soothing videos, the ambience is one of pure relaxation to help relieve stress and leave anxiety at the door. That said, the highly sensitive staff at the clinic are mindful that in some instances other forms of intervention are required to calm patients nerves as some phobias can run deep. In the case of mild anxiety, which is diagnosed as general nervousness and discomfort as opposed to breaking out in a panic attack, simply talking through your fears with your dentist might be enough to help get you through your appointment. Couple this with some controlled breathing exercises to help relax your body and shift your focus to other
20
things in order to preoccupy your mind. Closing your eyes and thinking about a place that makes you feel happy can also help you temporarily forget where you are. For those whose phobia is more extreme other forms of therapy might be necessary such as counselling, acupuncture or sedation. The type of sedation used in dental practices in UK is called Conscious Sedation where the patient is given a sedative drug via an injection into the arm or in the back of the hand to put them into a relaxed dream like state. You will never be completely put off to sleep and will be able to understand and respond to requests from the dental team, but most people cannot remember much about their treatment afterwards. This is because sedative drugs cause mild amnesia. Following the procedure patients are asked to stay in the practice until the effects of the drug have completely worn off and it is advisable to have another adult with you to drive you home. This procedure is available at Stokenchurch Dental Care to those who are medically ďŹ t and over the age of 12 years old.

NUTURING young minds
Are retained reflexes holding your child back? Could neurodevelopmental therapy help? We talk to therapist and mum Jo Rodhouse BSc(Hons), of Thame Therapy Clinic. www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk
Who are the families you help?
Nowadays more and more children are being labelled with autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD and ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, sensory processing disorders. Meanwhile, many children struggle with non-specific difficulties such as classroom learning, movement control, social interaction, concentration and emotional maturity. Many of these ‘labels’ have a medical reference, which some people find helpful, however the terms merely describe a set of symptoms. In my work there is very often a simple explanation for these difficulties and that is the presence of ‘retained reflexes’. I help both adults and children.
What are retained reflexes and why do they have such an impact?
In the womb and early stages of life, we are equipped with a number of reflexes that not only aid the birthing process, but also serve to ensure the survival and safety of the newborn into early infancy, for example, grasping and sucking. As the newborn develops, the brain begins to mature and take control, so these early reflexes are no longer needed. This is an essential stage of normal development. If, however, these reflexes fail to inhibit they can have a huge impact on appropriate function and therefore a child may display immature patterns of behaviour – lacking appropriate emotional, social & behavioural responses, difficulty in classroom learning and physical balance and co-ordination issues.
This explains why a seemingly intelligent child struggles to learn and thrive as others do.
What signs of retained reflexes would I have seen as a parent?
It’s often evident at the early key stages of development when the child has deviated from the ‘norm’. We often see difficult or delayed birthing, feeding or latching issues, failure to crawl, delayed teething or speech, being easily startled, unusual sleep patterns, fussy eating, thumb-suckers, toewalkers, late in becoming ‘dry’ or bed-wetting. The most common feedback we get from parents is ‘I could always tell something wasn’t quite right’ – after all there is no better expert than a parent.”
What is the treatment?
I offer a non-intrusive, drug-free Neural Stimulation Programme designed to stimulate then inhibit the reflexes that are hindering development. During the initial one-hour consultation, we take a case history and use standard neurological tests to look for evidence of retained reflexes and assess the function of the central nervous system. If there is sufficient evidence that the reflexes have been retained, then we put in place a programme of either skin stimulation techniques or movement exercises. These are performed at home, normally twice daily and should take no longer than five minutes. We then review progress and update the programme on a six-weekly basis. Change is often evident almost immediately.

With Jen Webster, Bowen Therapist
A
ccording to a recent report there are 8 million chronic pain suffers in Britain. Most problems involve the back. GP’s tend to refer patients to chiropractors, physiotherapists and in some cases suggest surgery, with no guarantee of success. Bowen Therapy is rapidly gaining acceptance, as the treatment of choice amongst sufferers of chronic pain. The Bowen Technique is a natural, drug –free non-invasive complementary therapy which was introduced to the UK, from Australia in the 1990’s. Bowen Therapy has a well documented record of success in the treatment of back pain. Bowen works with the body’s own healing systems. Rather than ‘making’ the body change, Bowen’s ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the balancing changes it requires. With fingers and thumbs the Bowen practitioner makes precise rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissues at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual. No hard tissue manipulation or force is used.
Case Study
: Sarah, aged 60, 18 month history of unresolved and debilitating lower back spasms and pain.
Earlier this year Sarah, age 60, came to me with an 18 month history of unresolved and debilitating lower back pain and spasms. Having seen her GP, a back specialist, an osteopath and chiropractor, an appointment was booked for facet joint injections in May. After her first 3 (weekly) Bowen Treatments this fit and healthy lady said she was generally out of pain. 8 weeks later, and after a further 2 treatments Sarah reports: - Quicker to recover after lifting, standing, gardening, cycling. - A sustained improvement in range of mobility and a vast decrease in pain levels. - Neck and shoulders relaxed, and postural aware. - Coping with work stress and long hours. - Drinking more water (Jen’s constant ‘nag’!). - A light and happy feeling after each session.
To date I have seen Sarah on a monthly basis. She had no need for medical intervention. She remains pain free and can continue with her busy lifestyle. She cycles regularly, often for 3- 4 hours, gardens and walks. She has not taken any pain medication since February. Residual aches post cycling or long greening periods resolve rapidly and are completely manageable. Sarah considers her Bowen sessions to be safe and effective and will ensure she makes time for regular treatments.

WINTER
health watch Do I Need it? Most of us know by now that certain groups of people should visit the GP for a flu jab: the elderly, diabetics, asthmatics etc. But pharmacists will tell you that even if you don’t fall into one of the categories above a flu jab is still a sensible precaution. Why however, would a healthy person request a flu vaccine? Seasonal flu is a deeply unpleasant illness. It generally requires a week or so off work to recover and can trigger other conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia. The average person with flu infects one or two other people through sneezing, coughing and touch. If you work with the general public, in a shop for example, you are more at risk of being exposed to the virus so you might consider a flu jab a worthwhile investment. A business owner may consider the impact a week off sick would have on his business and opt to protect himself or herself for that reason. Children are much more likely to pick up and pass on bugs as they are in such close proximity to each other all day. For this reason teachers and parents might think it wise to have a jab. Unless you fall into one of the at-risk categories you will have to be vaccinated, but it’s inexpensive (generally under £15) and many pharmacists administer the vaccine on their premises so you won’t have to book an appointment with your GP or take time off work. Flu jabs are generally safe unless you have an allergy to eggs or have had a previous allergic reaction to a shot. So discuss protecting yourself with your pharmacist today.

News & Events in our region... region... Thame High Street in Top Ten ‘Greatest Places in England’ Competition Thame High Street is one of the Ten Greatest Places in England chosen by judges in a competition being run by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). The competition is designed to celebrate some of our most attractive and inspiring places and the role planners have played in helping to protect or shape them for England’s communities.
Members of the public are now being asked
to vote for their overall favourite which will be crowned ‘England’s Greatest Place.’ An eminent panel of judges, chaired by RTPI Past President, Professor Peter Fidler, chose their top ten greatest places in England, after members of the public nominated 700 of their favourites in an earlier stage of the England’s Greatest Places competition. Speaking about Thame on behalf of the judges, Professor Fidler said, “Good planning over a long period has protected and enhanced the character of this small market town and its High Street, and Thame now has the benefit of one of the first Neighbourhood Plans in the UK. It is an example of exemplary community support and careful, sensitive planning.” Thame’s Neighbourhood Plan received an award for innovative plan-making from the RTPI in 2014. The RTPI and its members have been working with communities for a century to help create great places for people. The judging panel was asked to choose a winner for each region, and Thame High Street is the winner in the South East. The full list of regional winners is - Letchworth Garden City, East of England - Peak District, East Midlands - Brindley Place, Birmingham, West Midlands

- King’s Cross Regeneration, London - Kielder Park, North East - Liverpool Waterfront, North West - Thame High Street, South East - Bath, South West - joint winner - Bristol, South West – joint winner - Saltaire, Yorkshire Janet Askew, President of the RTPI said: “All our finalists are clearly much loved and appreciated places, both by local residents and the people who visit them. We wanted to recognise special places like those on the list which are cherished because they have been protected, carefully planned, or have been improved by the planning system. I am looking forward to seeing who the public now vote as England’s Greatest Place.” A specially commissioned trophy will be presented to each local authority to mark their ‘England’s Greatest Places’ award. Voting is now open so that members of the public can choose their ‘Greatest Place’. The number of votes cast will decide the overall winner. Voting is very easy: Tweet or Instagram your vote for your chosen place to #RTPIgreatplaces or visit: www.rtpi.org.uk/egpvoting and vote there. Voting is open until Friday 20th November.

WATLINGTON CHRISTMAS FAIR Saturday 5th December 2015 10:00am – 2:00pm
Started by Watlington Business Association, from small beginnings, to encourage Christmas
shopping in the High Street, the Fair has grown into one of the best Christmas Fairs in Oxfordshire. In its 11th year the Fair attracts visitors and stall holders from all around the local area. This year there will be even more stalls in the High Street, including a food market, games, music from the Watlington Concert Band and local music groups as well as the Indoor Craft Fair in the Memorial Club. Father Christmas, as expected, will arrive at his Grotto on his sleigh, drawn by two well known and loved ponies, Jellybean & Charlie. Accompanied by the winners of the competition to ‘draw and decorate a Christmas tree’ front cover for the Watlington Times. The Scouts, Fire Cadets, Junior Football Club and Youth Club will be helping on the day and manning their stalls. It is a fantastic opportunity for many local organisations to raise funds. The Fair itself and, more particularly, the Prize Draw, raise funds to help pay towards the Christmas trees and lights in the town (which are not sponsored or paid for, as many may suppose, by the Parish Council). Profits from the fair are then donated to the Youth Groups within the town, last year totalling over £800 – so this is a real community effort. Any queries regarding the Fair, offers of help or stall holder requests please contact Sam Swanson on 01491 613256 or visit the website www.watlingtontownchristmasfair.co.uk LIKE on Facebook: www.facebook.com/WatlingtonBusinessAssociationChristmasFair

PET CARE
during fireworks Small Pets
Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, ferrets and birds all need to be treated with special care when fireworks are being let off. These animals are easily frightened. Blue Cross advises that owners of such types of small animal should follow these precautions: • • •
•
Hutches/cages and enclosures should, if possible, be brought into a quiet room indoors, or into a garage or shed. Give your pet extra bedding to burrow into so it feels safe. If you cannot bring your pet’s hutch inside, you should turn its enclosure around so that it faces a wall or fence instead of the open garden.
Cover any aviaries or hutches with thick blankets or a duvet to block out the sight of the fireworks and deaden the sound of the bangs, but make sure there is enough ventilation.
•
•
•
•
Dogs and Cats • •
Always keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off. Make sure your dog is walked earlier in the day
•
Animals have very acute hearing. Loud bangs and whistles may cause them actual pain in their ears. But by following these simple guidelines your pet need not suffer. Source: Blue Cross
before the fireworks start.
Close all windows and doors, and block off cat flaps to stop pets escaping and to keep noise to a minimum. Draw the curtains, and if the animals are used to the sounds of TV or radio, switch them on (but not too loudly) in order to block out some of the noise of the fireworks. Ensure dogs are wearing some form of easily readable identification (ID) – even in the house. They should have at least a collar and tag.
Let your pet pace around, whine, miaow and hide in a corner if they want to. Do not try to coax them out – it’s just trying to find safety, and should not be disturbed. Avoid leaving your pet alone during such potentially upsetting events. If you do have to leave the house, don’t get angry with your pet if you find they have been destructive or toileted after being left on its own.
Never take your dog to a fireworks display. Even if they doesn’t bark or whimper at the noise, it doesn’t mean they are happy.

GARDEN BONFIRES
November seems a good month to talk about bonfires. I’m not actually a huge fan of the garden bonfire; I think that generally there are better ways of disposing of garden waste. Most green waste, such as leaves or grass can be recycled. Woody waste can be shredded and either composted or used as mulch, though it may be more cost-effective to hire a shredder rather than buy one outright if your garden is small. But if wood is diseased a bonfire may be the best way to deal with it. So what are the rules regarding garden bonfires? Rather surprisingly there are no specific laws against having a bonfire, or when you can have one. There may however be local by-laws made by a local authority and applicable only in a defined geographical area. If you rent a property you’ll need to check under your tenancy agreement too, in order to find out whether bonfires are permitted. Laws
about bonfires are generally concerned with their potential nuisance value. So you can’t burn plastics, or painted household waste which may produce toxic fumes or thick smoke harmful to asthma sufferers. Also, the Highways Act states that it is an offence to light a bonfire near a road if the drifting smoke may cause a traffic hazard. Mostly though bonfires are all about common sense. The smoke and smell from a fire might annoy your neighbours, especially if it prevents them from opening their windows or hanging out their washing. It’s polite to warn your neighbours beforehand; they may have an outdoor party planned or want to spend the afternoon pottering in their garden. Light your bonfire at a time least likely to cause a nuisance it. Only burn dry material because damp material creates a lot of smoke.
BONFIRE SAFETY CHECK-LIST Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees. Don’t build it too large and make sure it’s stable, so it won’t collapse outwards or to one side. Check the bonfire for hibernating wildlife. Don’t use petrol or paraffin to start the fire as these accelerate the flames and may cause the fire to burn out of control. Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy—just in case Don’t leave the fire unattended. Keep small children and pets out of the way. Once the fire has died down, pour water over the embers to stop them re-igniting.
