In this month’s issue we welcome another new feature in the form of our Music Events Guide. Written by Simon Markland, owner of Thame Music Academy, this section of the magazine will keep you up to date on all the musical goings on in and around our area from Open Mic Nights to Festivals. We are lucky to live in an area that offers such a diverse and eclectic mix of local musical events and talent to boot. We even attract HUGE names in the world of Rock! Did you know that the legendary STATUS QUO are coming to Kingston Blount? Check out their poster on page 18 and watch this space for competition opportunities in forthcoming editions of Look Local. We hope you enjoy reading this article and if you are a local musician looking to get some promotion or a piano teacher starting new classes, do get in touch as we would love to hear from you. This issue also contains lots of offers from our lovely advertisers including, FREE treatments at Thame Therapy Clinic during National Acupuncture Awareness Week (read their article on pg.14 for details), £25 off cleaning services with new advertiser, ServiceMASTER Clean (see pg.17, t&c’s apply) and £5 OFF Car Parking at this years Kingston Blount Point-to-Point races. If you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy a traditional, good-value, Sunday Roast you can fill your belly for just £8.95 at Chris’s Cafe Carvery in Studley Green (pg26 for details) or head to The Boot which is our Restaurant Review focus this month (pg25). Then we have a fantastic competition to WIN TICKETS to the planetastic Abingdon Air & Country Show. See page 23 for details about this family fun-filled day and details on how to enter. Wow - jam packed! So until next month, enjoy reading and get entering the competition for your chance to WIN.

MOTORING :in the spotlight... Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

By Tim BarnesClay, road test Journalist for Confused.com. Test-driven in

Alicante, Spain.

Toyota was responsible for a pivotal change in the motoring scene two decades ago with the launch of the first RAV4. It was a novel type of leisure focused car that forged today’s well-liked compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) market.

Now, the Japanese company has begun a new chapter in RAV4’s

success story with the introduction of the first RAV4 Hybrid in the UK this year. The 2.5 VVT-i Hybrid Icon model I drove, at the model’s European media presentation in Spain, had a smooth and economical powertrain. It merged a 2494cc petrol engine with an electric motor, and there was a further one running the rear axle to deliver electronic all-wheel drive (AWD). The AWD ability provides excellent safety and stability when navigating low-grip terrain, as I found out on some gravelly trails just outside of Alicante. The Hybrid certainly parades the refinement you’d envisage because of Toyota’s experience with this kind of powertrain. The ‘green’ car’s linear acceleration, channelled through its continuously variable transmission (CVT) auto box, is satisfactory, rather than thrilling, for any setting. What’s more, the hybrid tech is clear-cut, demanding no special attention when behind the wheel. There are three distinctive driving modes offered: Sport, ECO and EV. Electric-only (EV) is meant for short range driving at subdued speeds when the battery is charged-up, and only works with a light right foot. ECO tempers the drive power and air conditioning for best efficiency. Then Sport opens the gate to greater (and noisier) engine revs and a snappier throttle reply, while decreasing power steering assistance for further road feel. All this adds up to a class-leading economy figure of 55.4mpg, with official CO2 emissions of 118g/km. The Hybrid coincides with the new RAV4 line-up, which features fresh exterior styling, enhanced cabin quality, improved technology and safety features. The frontal design creates a sturdier road presence and includes full LED headlights. At the side, there is a more flowing look, and at the rear the combination lamps and bumper have been altered, highlighting the car’s road stance further. The quality of the RAV4’s cabin has been boosted considerably with a full colour screen and soft-touch materials. New tech features include Toyota’s 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor. This gives you sight of obstacles that would remain unseen in blind spots

06

@carwriteups

when using established front and rear cameras, making for safer and easier manoeuvring. What’s more, the latest RAV4’s safety specification has been notably upgraded with the addition of the new Toyota Safety Sense assembly of features. In addition to the Lane Departure Alert, PreCollision System, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist tech that was also included in the new Avensis and Auris, the RAV4 further profits from Adaptive Cruise Control and a superior Pre-Collision System. Taken as a whole, the RAV4 Hybrid is comfortable and clever – and you’ll be doing your ‘solution to the pollution’ bit for the world if you buy one.

FIX

My COLOURFIRST Experience

As, like many busy working mum’s to a young

family, ‘Me-Time’ features very low down on my ‘to-do’ list so when Jo offered me the opportunity to trial her Colour Analysis I jumped at the chance. After having a baby, ‘you’ change! Your body looks different, you have bags under your eyes and don’t even get me started on your hair – or lack of it as it falls out in clumps every time you get out of the shower. You have this allconsuming love for this tiny new person in your life that the love for yourself isn’t as important

as it once was. Comfort overrides fashion so you chuck on your trusty old leggings and comfortable black jumper and colour –usually a dark shade - is a subconscious choice selected for its ability to camouflage baby sick and disguise the lumps and bumps of the curvier figure you now have. Over time you realise that you don’t recognise the person staring back at you in the mirror, as ‘you’ have been replaced by ‘mum’ and as such you start to feel that you have lost your identity a bit resulting in a lack of confidence on what to wear.

MEETING JO: Before meeting Jo, I always thought that it was only

celebrities who sought the help of an image consultant, but this is simply not the case. More and more everyday woman (and men) like you and I see people like Jo because they have quite simply lost their way and need a bit of advice on how to find themselves again. So whatever the reason for your low self-esteem, be it that you’ve just had a baby or something else such as you’ve lost weight, gained weight, gone through a divorce or just need to give yourself a bit of TLC, then a colour consultation can really help to lift your mood and boost your confidence to help you shine once more.

Let my Colour Consultation commence... 10

Firstly, from the comfort of her colour studio which is located above Yummy Mummies Cafe in Princes Risborough, Jo explained the basic psychology of colour to me and how certain colours play a massive part in the energy we give out and our mood, before moving onto my skin tone analysis which is what would determine my perfect colour matches. Each of us fall into one of the four seasons (summer, spring, autumn or winter) which is depicted by our skin tone. We are either described as ‘warm’ meaning our skin has a yellow undertone or ‘cool’ meaning

Editor, Emma goes in the ColourFirst Hot Seat...

*TM pending

Colour plays a big part in our lives - from advertising to interior design, fashion to photography, colour is everywhere and plays a big part in effecting our mood and emotions. Black is repressive, yellow invigorating, pale blues and greens are calming and healing and red detracting and repelling. In our clothing as a nation we are traditionally very muted and dark in our wardrobes. Black only really looks good on a certain cool skin tone and it ISN’T slimming (a good M&S marketing campaign and myth) and DOESN’T go with everything - navy does! It is impactive and exciting discovering new bright colours which not only suit you and brighten your natural look, complexion and your wardrobe but can change the way you feel. COLOUR ANALYSIS may have been around for 30 years but my approach to colour is fresh, modern, relevant to current fashion and all about discovering the colours that make you ‘Zing’*! This month I am excited to have Emma Penfold, Look Local’s gorgeous and wonderful editor writing her own feature on her COLOUR FIRST experience. Read on and enjoy... with love, Jo xx our skin has a blue undertone. Each season contains its own colour palette and depending on which one you are influences the colours that suit you best and enhance your natural colouring (without tinted moisturiser, foundation, fake tan or real tan). By draping a series of coloured material around my shoulders Jo (and in time, me) was able to easily distinguish which colour season I fel into.

My ZINGS

I am Autumn, which incidentally is my favourite season as I love all the colours it brings, and I couldn’t believe how obvious it became when Jo held up the colours that suited me and the ones that clearly didn’t. Pinks and

pastel shades are ones for me to avoid as they make me look washed out and peaky. Whereas deeper, earthier colours such as burnt orange or forest green really lift my face and actually make me appear slimmer (I felt). For jewellery I should choose Rose Gold or Gold. Jo then went one step further and from my seasonal palette she selected my ZING COLOURS (she will usually pick at least six key colours from your palette). These are the colours that Jo feels completely enhance and complement your hair and eye colour and each outfit you choose should feature at least one of these colours.

Other services available

For the ladies, Jo also offers a full make-up service offering advice for application, blending and using your perfect colours. Again I was taken totally out of my comfort zone and ended up purchasing a very vibrant, orange toned lipstick which I would never have worn before going to ColourFirst through fear that it was too ‘in your face’. It fact, it actually enhances my face and makes me feel pretty fantastic. Jo also offers wardrobe re-vamps, personal shopping and colour refresh sessions for the those who have previously had colour analysis.

Don’t be nervous

“Jo has a very calming & warming demeanour about her and within 5 minutes of meeting her I felt like I had known her for years. I am confident anyone seeing Jo will feel the same and I wholeheartedly recommend the ColourFirst experience. What an eye opener! ’’

If you want to discover your perfect colours contact Jo.

Acupuncture Awareness Week

6th - 13th March

D

Treating Sports Injuries and Physical Pains with Acupuncture!

id you know that sports injuries and muscle traumas respond really well to Acupuncture? In fact Acupuncture is often the treatment of choice when there is an acute trauma with swelling and inflammation, where it is not physically possible to move the body without causing more pain. It is also an excellent treatment for older injuries that have got stuck and cause pain or stiffness. Problems such as sprains, bruises or pulled muscles happen often from sports activities but also from everyday activities like picking up a heavy bag of shopping, pulling up stubborn weeds, or perhaps from whiplash caused by a car accident. The key thing with all these traumas is to respond quickly. Usually ‘rest, ice, compression and elevation’ come first but after that mobilisation is key and this is where Acupuncture is so effective for reducing pain and getting the blood to move again. This month Acupuncturists in the UK are holding a Sports Injuries Awareness Week to coincide with National Acupuncture Awareness Week which falls between 6th -13th March. Our Acupuncturists Andy Roscoe, Poppy Bowler and Debbie Robertshaw are all experienced in dealing with these problems and will be happy to help you.

BOWEN THERAPY helps children

with disabilities

This month we talk to Jen Webster about a gorgeous little boy called Josh who has severe cerebral palsy caused by a lack of oxygen at birth. Jen explains how Josh’s regular Bowen treatments assist him in his developmental skills. www.jenwebsterbowen.co.uk

I first met Josh when he was 14 months old and we have continued with Bowen sessions on a regular basis since then.

Due to his cerebral palsy Josh suffers epilepsy, spasms, dystonia, global developmental delay, sleep disorder and swallow difficulties mean that he is tube fed. Josh cannot roll, sit, stand, walk, eat or talk and he has difficulty using his hands so needs lots of help to interact with his environment. Josh now requires 24 hour care - his primary carers are his parents who are assisted, at home, by a dedicated team of carers. He does however, lead a busy life with visits to NHS neurologists, P.A.C.E and Helen & Douglas House Hospice and many other supporting groups. The issues that made his Mummy, Clare, seek help to begin with were described as: • • • • • • •

Generally uncomfortable Spasms Bowel dysfunction Dystonia Teething Unable to sleep without sedation Seizures

Clare hoped that Bowen Therapy would help Josh to be calmer and aid his sleep quality and so far she sees a significant difference in these areas after treatments. He continues to present with symptoms of his condition but his overall

wellbeing has improved. My remit with Josh will remain the same as he develops. I recently asked for help from the Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund (TBLTF) which I am delighted to report has granted Josh a donation of £900 to fund some much needed equipment for use at home. Originally set up in Australia in 2003 the TBLTF UK (non-profit making organisation) offer help to children with disabilities who have received Bowen Therapy. It provides mechanical or electrical equipment that will enhance their quality of life. With the funding Josh’s parents have been able to purchase an iPad with a gooseneck holder and have been given a contribution towards a swing that is suitable for indoor and out door use. These items will be invaluable to Josh and are deemed essential by his supporting occupational therapists. I support both the TBLTF and Helen & Douglas House Hospice and donations are always very much appreciated. Donations to either charities can be made via my clinic at The White House in Thame.

NEWS in&our EVENTS region NEW COMMUNITY PAVILION FOR CHINNOR NOW OPEN!

Chinnor is excited to announce the opening of a new sports and social club, to be known as Chinnor Community Pavilion. The brand new state-of-the-art single storey building off Station Road has been the result of fundraising activities by the Parish Council, coupled with grants from Sport England, the Football Foundation and South Oxfordshire District Council.

T

he Community Pavilion includes a suite of four team and two officials changing rooms to cater for the adjacent sports pitches, tennis courts and playing field, and will also act as a community hub with a function room, club room, bar and kitchen. Chinnor Parish Council will shortly relocate its office into the new building. The Pavilion’s sports facilities and party suites will be available for hire, and a regular range of activities will be on offer from fitness classes to clubs. Locally-based company PCMS Design from Haddenham has project managed the whole build on behalf of Chinnor Parish Council, having previously carried out the design and specification. Care was taken at an early stage to design a building which has eco-friendly, sustainable features Councillor Pat Hayward, Chair of Chinnor Parish Council, said “The Parish Council are delighted that the building is now complete. We are indebted to PCMS Design who have not only designed and specified this wonderful building, but guided and supported us through the whole process. The PCMS Design team have done us proud!”

his month ‘On the Mic’ focuses on Simon Markland, Thame Music Academy.

This month we are going to focus on Simon Markland from Thame Music Academy, the academy was launched in September 2015 and is going from strength to strength providing individual and group tuition in a variety of instruments. Simon Markland is a highly experienced tutor in piano, guitar (electric and acoustic) and singing. Originally from Lancashire, Simon undertook a BA (hons) in Music Practice at the University of Central Lancashire and completed his P.G.C.E at Oxford Brookes University. He has since been teaching and providing support in primary schools alongside private musical tuition. Simon began keyboard lessons at the age of 5, completing his grades by the age of 12. He then moved onto learning the piano, working his way up the practical and theory grades until he was 16. This experience made Simon realise that his passion in life is for music. Wishing to learn a new instrument, Simon picked up the guitar at 14 and progressed quickly over the following few years. He regularly performs within local groups and also as a solo artist performing well known favourites and also compositions of his own which are always greatly received and highly praised.

Over the last 12 years Simon has taught private music lessons to children and adults ensuring they achieve their grade ambitions or just the ability to enjoy playing their chosen instruments. As a qualified teacher Simon is highly competent in planning creative, individual and correctly levelled lessons for any pupil. In September 2015 Simon realised his dream of opening a full time music academy in Thame- Thame Music Academy. He aims to bring professional and creative music lessons to children and adults alike alongside getting involved with local community projects and performances. Simon is also involved in the Thame Carnival 2016, Beacon Fest and Music In The Park. For more information regarding Thame Music Academy please contact: E-mail:

Restaurant Review As you take the country drive out of the village of Chinnor and across the picturesque ridge you will enter the quaint little village of Bledlow Ridge where you are welcomed by a modern, family-friendly village pub and eating house, THE BOOT.

This is where Mike and I recently experienced a stunningly presented three-course lunch, which not only looked fantastic on the plate but also tasted sublime. On entering the contemporary decorated restaurant your mood is instantly lifted as you are greeted with a smile by proprietors, Andy and Emma, their team of warm & hospitable bar and waiting staff and a fully stocked bar serving an abundance of local ales, beers, spirits and fine wines. The ambience is friendly and everybody in the place from the staff to the customers seems happy & cheerful. We were then shown to our seats to peruse the extensive menu full of locally sourced foods to excite your taste buds. Prepare to be spoilt for choice, as all the dishes on offer from the locally sourced Fresh Fish Specials, 3-Course Lunch Time Special menu to the á la carte selection all sound mouth-wateringly tasty. We opted for the very reasonably priced, £20.00 for three exquisite courses, Lunch Set Menu and chose Thai Spiced Crab Cake with wilted Spinach & Sweet Chilli Sauce and Chicken Liver Parfait served with Onion Jam & toasted Brioche to start us off. My Crab Cake was light and fluffy with a subtle aromatic flavour complimented perfectly by the sweet chilli sauce and Mike’s pate was silky on the tongue and jam packed with flavour. To follow, Mike opted for Breast of Cornfed Chicken wrapped in Parma Ham, Bubble & Squeak, Chorizo, Pea & Pearl Onion Jus whilst I dined on a Fillet of Salmon, which was served to me in a warm bowl with an accompaniment of crushed New Potatoes, Asparagus, Crispy Pancetta and Hollandaise Sauce. As a huge lover of salmon and hollandaise I had high expectations of this dish and I wasn’t disappointed as this was simply one of the most delicious, well-presented food creations that I have ever tasted. The flavours that engulfed my mouth from the first bite through to the last mouthful (which I didn’t want to end) really was a taste explosion and one that I would most definitely want to experience again. Mikes chicken was succulent and tender and the gravy was Qu.‘the best I’ve tasted in a long time!” This is because all the handmade sauces/gravy’s at The Boot are blended together in a huge stockpot from the tasty meat juices and left to infuse flavour before serving so they really pack a punch. We finished of our meal with a rich & creamy Crème Brûlée presented in a tea cup (a nice touch) with homemade gingerbread biscuits on the side. In addition to the above mentioned menu’s, Head Chef Andy Hipgrave, creates dedicated set menus for calendar events throughout the year including Mothering Sunday (6th March) and Easter (Sunday 27th March), Father’s Day and Christmas as well as Bar Snacks for visitors who would prefer a light bite over a leisurely drink or cup of coffee. During the winter months The Boot extends their seated offering into the marquee which is a detachable heated extension to the restaurant. In the summer months guests can enjoy alfresco dining in the large garden to the side of the venue. The Boot also host a number of outside events in this space with the most imminent being an Anniversary Garden Party on Saturday 14th May to celebrate Andy & Emma’s third year at the establishment. This free to attend afternoon event will include a number of activities to keep people of all ages entertained from inflatables and face painting to a kids disco and hog roast. Then in the evening adults can enjoy a bit of wellearned ‘grown-up time’ and revel in an night of live entertainment from quality Take That and George Michael Tribute acts. Tickets are just £10.00, which includes a free drink and the chef will be laying on a festival style dining option for those who want to experience the culinary delights The Boot has to offer. “If you are looking for a place to take your family for a weekend roast or to enjoy an evening of fine dining with your spouse pop into The Boot – you will leave with a full belly and a warm heart.”

Smartphones help secure the home

T

he humble mobile phone has come a long way since its conception back in the early 70’s. Once used only as a means of communication to contact a business associate the mobile has now become a modern day commodity that most of us can’t function without. Owned by primary school children through to pensioners the innovative smart phone can do just about anything, from sending messages, taking photographs and surfing the web to paying for items instead of a debit card. They can even monitor the security of your house by providing a portable window into the home. This makes your smartphone the perfect home security accessory as it is is always accessible and a lot less expensive than a traditional monitored home security system. They say there are just two types of homeowner: those who have home security and those who get around to it after their home is burgled. The latter is largely down to the costly installation fee of a traditional alarm system coupled with the ongoing charges of the call-centre representatives who notify you if the alarm is triggered. This is quite simply an expensive outlay for something that many consumers deem a ‘just in case’ eventuality. However, the ability to secure a home through automation and keep an eye on it from afar is something that many consumers are starting to understand and embrace the benefit of. Thame based security company Rycote Security are a business who have adopted the use of smartphone home security by integrating these alarms systems into their extensive offering of home security solutions. Rycote Security’s owner, retired Detective, Tristram Maclean explains: “Monthly payments for call centres, that go on for ever and ever, are in fact worse than a waste of money, they actually deliver a poorer response than you can achieve on your own. A smart home alarm immediately alerts you, and sends pictures from your home straight to your phone, whilst a call centre receiving an alert can only phone you and tell you that your alarm has gone off, without knowing what caused it. Even the extra payments for police response are a fading benefit because with all the other calls on police time, alarms are a low priority, and nowhere near as urgent as homeowners calling to say that they can actually see intruders inside their home!” The development of home automation and home security is a perfect match. Using an App on your phone the monitoring system allows you to see inside your home whenever you want with a whole host of additional, intuitive features to boot. A smart home knows when you leave the house to

28

set the alarm; similarly you can deactivate it and turn on the lights when you return home with the touch of a button on your phone. This eliminates the risk of inadvertently sending the police to your home as you fumble around in the dark trying to remember the passcode to disarm the alarm. Your home immediately becomes more secure and welcoming if you can turn on your lights from your phone as you arrive. What’s more, you control who else has your app on their phone, so your whole family can stay safe. Any alarm, even with a link to the police, cannot provide full cover on its own. A burglary takes just five minutes, whilst the police aim to get there in ten. As a former police detective himself, Tristram knows this all to well, he is aware of how burglaries happen and how distressing they can be to the unprotected. That is why Rycote Security offers a free service to review the whole security setup in your home. It is a systematic and experienced analysis to help make a home less attractive to burglars, harder to force entry into and more difficult to steal from if they do get in. For a start Rycote Security offers to fit a digital safe at no extra cost with every alarm system they install. Burglars haven’t got the time, tools or skills to pick a safe so this added bit of security should give you extra peace of mind that your home is in safe hands whist you’re away.

Home & Garden As consumer confidence, in being able to protect their homes from the palm of their hand, grows so too does the list of security products that are compatible with the technology. The world leading Risco range provides the most diverse selection of products for allowing homeowners the ability to install an alarm perfect for their requirements. A wireless system can be fitted quickly with minimal disruption with add-ons that include pet recognition sensors and detectors for smoke, heat, carbon monoxide or flooding. A Rycote system includes a whole host of smart features including the ability to send photos immediately to the smartphone if the alarm is triggered, for whatever reason. This then allows the user to make an informed decision as to whether it’s a false alarm or whether they do in fact require police action.

How much will it cost?

A Rycote alarm, with a camera, a digital safe, and enough sensors for an ordinary home, will cost under £800. Rycote offers one-year interest free credit, or longer periods that can bring the cost down to under £25 per month. (APR 12%, T&C apply)

advanced smart alarm, a camera, a digital home safe and lifetime access to the most advanced home security app available. There is nothing further to pay after you buy the system, even access to the secure phone app linking you directly to your home is free for ever. What’s more, to contrast with the industry practice of locking customers in for three years, Rycote Security honour a buy-back guarantee meaning if a customer’s circumstances change and the use of the alarm system becomes redundant, they will buy it back for a fair and reasonable price. Add to that the free review service and refer-afriend bonus scheme it would appear that Rycote Security are offering a very cost-effective and competitive package for all, and it all starts with a no-commitment free review of your home security. For more information about Home Security options visit www.rycotesecurity.co.uk or call 01865 522602 to book an appointment for a home review with one of Rycote Security’s experienced security advisors

The current rate of interest looks pretty static at present and a rise in the next three to six months looks unlikely. Mark Tubb, Business Mentor & Co-Director of Bucks Conferences explains more about the current issues surrounding Interest Rates and why he feels a rise towards the back end of 2016 is possible if the points below ease and no new detrimental events occur. For information about meeting facilities call 01844 346989 or visit www.bucksconferences.com

What’s the Logic behind current low Interest Rates? The current bank rate has been with us at 0.5% for more than six years, we keep expecting it to rise; the potential to increase fluctuates and is currently reduced.

only very slow rate increases. An increase to 3% is currently not expected until after 2020. The impact of small rate increases on the cost of debt taken out at current very low interest rates is huge. This means that a great deal of care has to be taken when increasing interest rates.

“What is the logic behind current interest rates and when might interest rates rise?”

Why is it so difficult to forecast rate rises currently? Interest rates have been a lot higher on average in the past and the tendency is to expect them to return to higher levels to keep inflation at target levels. However large state and private individual debts combined with an aging baby boomer population puts a deflationary shadow over our economy and could mean many more years of low rates. The chaotic global situation could also contribute further deflationary pressure.

Predictions Past and Present. 2015 predictions were for a likely rate rise in 2015. It didn’t happen. The first rise in US interest rates occurred in December 2015. The UK rates should be influenced by US rate rises to a degree and the expectation was that we would probably see upward UK rate pressure early in 2016. Now here we sit at the beginning of 2016 and currently global money markets seem to imply that the first UK rate increase will come in 2019. Why won’t the Bank of England increase interest rates at present? There have been several global events that make the Bank of England look to delay a UK interest rate rise yet again: • Stock market turbulence based upon concerns about China • Weaker UK economic growth • UK deflation in September (although inflation returned to 0.2% in December) • Falling oil price How quickly will the Bank of England increase rates after they start to rise? After any initial rate increase, the market is pricing in

38

Mortgage rates? The credit margins that banks load onto the Bank of England Base rate are historically high due to perceived higher risk and a need to strengthen the banks profit and capital strength. The cost of fixedrate mortgages however remains historically low compared with “trackers” on longer-term loans. The price of fixed-rate mortgages could fall further. This is because “swap rates”, the rates at which lenders “buy” money for fixed periods on money markets have plummeted in the first three weeks of 2016. This is because of a gloomier outlook for the world economy and the UK economy; meaning rate rises are less likely than a month ago. Note Well. Nobody can say for sure what will happen to interest rates and everyone has to form their own view. The logic I set out above could well be wrong, it is only an opinion, so research carefully and think through using your own logic before you take any meaningful decisions.

Coffee Break

Emily Feather and the Enchanted Door – Holly Webb

Have you ever felt as if you just don’t fit in? Where even your own

family seems different to you? This is how ten-year-old Emily Feather feels. She looks different to her siblings with her dark hair. It is true that everyone looks a bit different (even her older twin sisters aren’t identical) but Emily just can’t shake the feeling that there is something about her that sets her apart from the rest of the family. Her best friend Rachel points out that she is the only one not named after a bird, but surely there is more to it than that?

Emily lives in an unusual house. Her dad, Ash, is an author, writing fantasy books. The house seems as if it could have come straight out of one of his books. Her room is in the old attic at the top of a rickety flight of stairs, with ornately carved mirrors on the landing. Sometimes it even feels as if the walls have moved: but that would be silly as Emily knows that can’t happen. One day she is passing one of the mirrors and sees a strange reflection in it. A girl with green skin is staring back at her and that is just the start of a series of events that will completely change Emily’s life. It turns out that she was right. She IS different from the rest of her family, but not in any way she could have possibly imagined. Holly Webb is better known for her novels books about animals and has written over 90 books for children. However this book, the first in a new magical series, shows that she is just as adept at writing about fantasy worlds. Aimed at readers aged 8+ this is a lovely introduction to traditional fairy mythology. It does take a while to get going and the titular enchanted door doesn’t appear until the final quarter of the book. This is clearly intended to introduce the reader to Emily’s world which is then explored in future books. Review written by: Willow Coby
