Welcome to the March Edition of Look Local Magazine. The nights are drawing shorter, and even though there is still a slight nip in the air you can feel that spring is definitely on its way. Spring is a lovely time of the year, the trees bud with blossom, flowers bloom and breeding farm animals give birth to their young. Many of us find spring, a time for rejuvenation, renewal and re-growth, spring cleaning comes to mind! Look Local has gone under a bit of a transformation this month in the form of a new-look logo and front cover layout - I hope you like it! So as well as celebrating that summer is on its way with an extra hour of light in the evening - don’t forward to set your clocks forward one hour on 26th March - we also celebrate Commonwealth Day on Monday 13th, St Patrick’s Day on Friday 17th and Mothering Sunday on 26th. If your stuck for ideas on what to treat your mum to this year, turn to pages 24 & 25 where we have a double-page feature full of gifts. Or if you would rather take your special lady out for the day then why not head to Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway where she can enjoy a leisurely ride along the foothills of the Chilterns whilst tucking into a delicious Cream Tea or Ploughman’s Lunch. Or if she likes the theatre but your budget won’t stretch to an evening out in the West-End - stay local and head to St Leonards Church, Watlington on 11th March for an early treat from The Pantaloons as they perform their rendition of Jane Austin’s Pride & Prejudice (see pg.19 for details).

Until next month, enjoy reading and remember to look local for all your shopping and servicing needs...

Since its opening, the centre has proved popular with a range of businesses, from large corporates to one man bands, all seeking the hassle-free flexibility that comes with using the space. Regus Stokenchurch is located in Beacon House on Stokenchurch Business Park. The centre offers a variety of different workspace options, available on flexible terms, which are designed to fit the needs and budget of each and every business. The site boasts over 90 offices of various sizes, as well as a large co-working space, meeting rooms available to book for as little as an hour, and Virtual Office services which provide a prestigious business address and professional phone answering service on a budget. In the spotlight... 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF

MOTORING

Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.

‘RF’ stands for is ‘Retractable Fastback’, but it’s not just the name that distinguishes itself from the regular MX-5 – the RF has its own look.

The MX-5 RF is offered with a 131PS 1.5-litre engine,

or you can up the enjoyment factor by going for the 160PS 2.0-litre unit. The latter is the version I got behind the wheel of. If you don’t like switching gears yourself you can go for an RF with automatic transmission, but I’d advise staying with the six-speed manual ‘box. The miniature gearstick feels good in the hand and it finds the cogs with accuracy – making for a more pleasing drive. The 2.0-litre powerplant is hurried, with zero to 62mph arriving in 7.3 seconds. But the car needs some work to get the best out of it, and that’s where you come in helping the RF with the revs by hanging onto the gears and really pushing the car. It all makes for a gratifying experience – especially when the Mazda’s engine and sprightly exhaust notes make themselves known. The MX-5 RF’s static roof sections make the Mazda 45kg weightier than the normal MX-5, but the RF has been engineered so that it handles as amiably as the lighter model. I found I could drive into twisting turns of tarmac eagerly; the steering is exact and the RF feels meticulously balanced in the bends. It rides well, coping with road surface inconsistencies far better than some bigger, less athletically-oriented cars. What the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF can’t do, though, is gag the whistling wind. It disperses road and tyre rumble better than the MX-5 Convertible, but even with the roof up, it still sounds squally. That said; once the roof is dropped, you are shielded from a pummelling by the fastback segments – and at that point you accept the sound of the wind rather than battling against the hubbub. Inside, the miniature cockpit is very much the same as the usual MX-5. The only tangible alteration is an upto-date colour screen housed in the driver’s instrument binnacle. As with all MX-5’s, there’s only room for two,

08

@carwriteups

and if, like me, you’re tall and not particularly lean, it’s a close-fitting place to be. The boot isn’t colossal – obviously, but a couple of holdalls and some shopping will fit in. So, if you’re in the market for a motor that has a removable roof section, but isn’t a full drop-top, then this MX-5 RF could be for you. The new Mazda protects you from the worst of the elements, while giving you that wind in your beard (and ears) experience. At the end of the day, the RF delivers just as much joy as the MX-5 Convertible, but in a more relaxed way. It also looks, dare I say it, more virile with its fastback styling.

Create your own bathroom sanctuary…and relax! By Rachel Blake, Coulon Stone Ltd

B

athing in water has been equated with good physical and mental health since the Romans. It’s thought that rather than speedily dashing in to the shower, taking a bath could improve many aspects of our health. These include improving your sleep, reducing pain, boosting brain power and decreasing stress. However, you don’t have to splash out on a spa trip to reap all the amazing benefits that bathing can offer. You can recreate the serenity and relaxation of a Roman bath in your own home with some natural stone and a few added touches, such as underfloor heating, warm, fluffy towels and flickering scented candles. By creating an environment in your home that encourages you to make time for yourself – even if you only manage to do it once a week! Natural stones such as marble, limestone, travertine and slate all offer a wonderful combination of elegance with practicality to create a soothing bathing environment, the sense of opulence added by using some of nature’s most beautiful materials means you can create the ultimate sanctuary in your home. Hygienic and durable, stone is perfect for bathroom floors, bath surrounds, vanity units, shower trays, walls and wet rooms. Whatever your size or space, here at Coulon Stone we have worked with a wide variety of bathrooms. From small walk in wet rooms to beautiful, large spaces that lend themselves to double sinks and freestanding baths. So, if you are looking to create some space to take some time out in this hectic world, then it really is worth creating a sanctuary in your very own bathroom by using natural stone.

NEWS & EVENTS in our region

Vote now for your unsung Thame Hero... T

here are people all around Thame who help their neighbours, support local groups or go out of their way for others in their community. That is why, nine years ago, the Town Council launched Thame Town Awards as a way to recognise, thank and celebrate those special people who are working hard to make our community a safer, more vibrant and happier place to live. Each year the Council invites members of the public to nominate their local unsung heroes, and this year is no different! They want you to tell them about individuals and groups who have made a special contribution to life in Thame. This could be a volunteer, a teacher, a shop worker, someone old, someone young – pretty much anyone! This year there are five categories in which you can make a nomination: Sporting Achievement, Volunteer of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Service with a Smile, Creative Arts Achievement To nominate, visit www.thametowncouncil.gov.uk/town-awards and fill out an electronic form, or pop in to the Town Hall Information Centre. You can find out a bit more about the Town Awards and meet some of the judging panel at the Thame Market Community Stall on Tuesday 14 March 2017. Why not follow the awards on Facebook ‘Thame Town Awards’ or on Twitter using #ThameAwards! The closing date for nominations is Monday 3 April 2017. This year’s awards are generously supported by Risborough Carers, who are celebrating their 25th birthday in 2017. * The nominee must live, work, study in or contribute to the parish of Thame. For full terms and conditions visit http:// www.thametowncouncil.gov.uk/town-awards.

very month we will be focussing on particular music groups or events in the area and finding out more about our local musicians. This month we are going to focus on Ian English, a fantastic local choir master and event’s organiser!

did your interest in Q: How music start?

: My parents encouraged me when I was A about 10 by buying a piano and giving me music lessons. At the same time I started to play by ear, working out how to play tunes on the piano without sheet music.

Q: Who influences you musically?

I love good music, in any genre. Live A: performances are important to me – I’ve seen some great musicians and

singers that have made big impressions on me – Richard Thompson, Kate Rusby, Eddi Reader, Bonnie Raitt, Albert Lee, Tracy Chapman.

us about Thame Pop Choir? Q:: Tell Thame Pop Choir started nearly 3 A years ago with 25 singers, we now have a membership of 85. It’s a very friendly group, we meet weekly to sing, harmonise and have fun. The community aspect of the choir is important to TPC members and whenever possible the choir takes part in community events in Thame. We have a small choir of 15-20 people available in the day who perform a couple of times a month at local care homes, day clubs, Thame & District Day Centre etc. Also, in the last 2 years the choir has donated over £3,500 to local charities.

has the choir been Q: Where performing recently? : The choir is primarily about meeting A each week for the pleasure and fun of group singing, however recent

performances include Thame Council Christmas lights event, Music in the Park and Towersey Festival, and we staged our annual TPC concert in December.

other musical activities are with? Q:youWhatinvolved love the mix of music and humour – A: Imany years ago I was in a musical/ comedy duo called ‘Outasight’, and

in recent years I’ve performed with The Boodlum Band, playing at theatres and events around the area, including Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, Music in the Park and Towersey Festival. We do our own interpretation of classic hits; however we have been inspired by ‘Wierd’ Al Yankovic (parodies), The Bonzo Dog Band and The Bob Kerr Whoopee Band. When not doing that I occasionally get the opportunity to accompany some great singers at the First Thursday Music Club in Thame, including Hayley Gomm and Joe Heap.

can you be contacted for live Q: How performances? choir’s website is www. A: The thamepopchoir.com and this has a ‘contact’ page. Alternatively I can be contacted by email at thamepopchoir@gmail.com. Mothers Day

Give your mum a whole ‘Lotte’ love this Mothers Day ... Sunday 26th March is Mother’s Day which is the one day of the year where we should all make a special effort to really highlight just how appreciated our mum is by treating her like a queen. Whether it be through fine food and drink or a gift for the home, The Deli at No.5 stock a vast selection of quintessentially British and unique treats that are bound to put a huge smile on her face. If your mum’s a bit of a sweet tooth why not treat her to an authentic taste of Yorkshire with a Lotte Shaw Mother’s Day Gift Tin (£12.50). All Lotte Shaw’s produce is hand packaged with love and style into tins or hamper baskets which can be re-used long after the delicious bakes within have been consumed. The Mother’s Day Gift Tin contains expertly baked oat flapjack slices, indulgent all-butter shortbread biscuits and Belgian chocolate covered millionaire shortbread for a touch of decadence. For the mum who exudes class and style then a Pure New Wool Throw (from £45.00) by Tweedmill Textiles Ltd could be right up her street. This UK based manufacturer has been producing high quality textile products since 1970 and Hannah and Joe are delighted to be stocking a selection of stunning Throws from their collection so you can quite literally drape your mum in love. The Deli at No.5 also offer a Bespoke Hamper Service enabling you to create a basket full of your mums favourite food and beverage items to a budget that suits you. This could include locally sourced handmade Chocolates, speciality Gins, unique condiments & sauces or chutneys & cheeses. Hannah and Joe are very proud of the cheese selection on offer in the Deli, hence the introduction of the ‘Champion of Cheese’ loyalty scheme where each fortnight they bring in a ‘Guest Cheese’ for customers to sample and purchase. So if you mum sees herself as a bit of a cheese connoisseur that ‘camembert’ to be without a hearty lump of cheddar on her cracker this could provide a perfect and unique present this Mother’s day.

Health & Wellbeing Lip-reading can help you to make the most of your hearing. Many people leave developing the skill of lip-reading too late and think of it as a last resort.

Read my lips

It is far from that – lipreading is a life skill that audiologists at Aston Hearing Services feel everyone should learn which is why they actively encourage all hearing aids wearers and non-hearing aids wearers alike to undertake a course to develop the skill.

SO WHAT IS LIP READING? It is seeing the sound of speech - it is not like reading a book - you do not see every word. In fact, only about 30% of words have some sort of shape on the lips. It is not just about reading lips, it is about appreciating the context of a conversation and reading body language and then putting all three elements together to form the full picture. It is quite an art. People that have been deaf for a very long time, nearly always have developed the skill naturally. As soon as anyone with a hearing loss arrives anywhere, they need to find out immediately the subject of the conversation - then they

are in with a chance. Once you know the gist of something you can use your common sense and natural intelligence to help you work out the parts you cannot lip-read. Lip-readers find anticipation very helpful, if they can lip read part of a sentence, they can often work out the rest. Everybody uses facial expressions and body language, often without realising they are doing so. When reading lips these can give vital clues as to whether someone is happy, sad, cross, in a hurry or bored. There is a scientific phenomenon called the McQurk effect that proves everyone hears with their eyes to certain extent naturally. Sight is the primary sense and hearing, touch and smell are all secondary senses, therefore your brain can often let visual clues overrule aural information. The visual information a person gets from seeing a person speak changes the way they hear the sound.

WANT TO LEARN MORE? On Tuesday 4th April, Aston Hearing Services will be hosting a drop-in Coffee Morning at Thame Town Hall, between 10am till 12noon focussing on mastering the skill of Lipreading. Audiologists and lip-reading tutors will be on hand to provide qualified advice and personal life experiences.

If you cannot attend the open day in April Aston Hearing Services offer light-hearted lip-reading classes allowing people the chance to socialise with like-minded people whilst picking up some valuable communication tips along the way;

WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY By Ebony Jacklin

The philosophy of Osteopathy is based on the idea that structure and function of the body are fundamentally linked.

I first found out about osteopathy, after being advised to seek

an osteopath when suffering from sport related injuries. I saw the benefits first hand after attending a couple of treatment sessions. I found the holistic approach really interesting and wanted to learn more about the profession. I qualified as an osteopath, from The British School of Osteopathy with a Masters of Osteopathy. I am fully registered with the General Osteopathic Council and a member of the Institute of Osteopathy. Since graduating I have enjoyed working with a wide range of patients. Osteopathy consists of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions, for example:

• • • • • • •

Joint Pain including arthritic pain Generalized aches and pains Sciatica Headaches arising from the neck Neck and back pain Muscle spasms Sport injuries

Osteopaths will work through the neuro-musculoskeletal system and work on muscles, ligaments and joints to enhance the blood and nerve supply to these structures. The aim of treatment is to focus on relieving pain, promoting tissue health and allowing the body to heal itself. Often people will seek an osteopath for problems that have gradually come on over time and unsure what has caused it. Osteopaths aim to identify the cause of the problem rather than just treating your symptoms and looking at the body as a whole. When taking a case history time will be spent listening to a person’s lifestyle and social factors as well as a past history.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING A CONSULTATION? The first part of the consultation includes a detailed case history, and will include questions about current and past complaints as well as general health and lifestyle. The physical examination involves an assessment of posture, active and passive movements of the joints and muscles to see how your body moves. This assessment also ensures you are safe to treat. Osteopaths use a range of techniques including soft tissue massage, joint articulation, stretching techniques and if suitable joint manipulation. During the session a treatment plan will be discussed with you and advice on self care will be given such as stretching and strengthening exercises.

Melt away the pain of frozen shoulder...

By Jen Webster, Bowen Therapist shoulder pain) is a common problem, and one that results in frustrating debilitation for many suffers. There can be many reasons for the onset of shoulder pain but in many patients the initial complaint leads to a chronic condition with pain, loss of function and resulting stiffness. Many of my clients report difficulty sleeping, dressing, reaching up to shelves, reaching to the rear of the car, using a kettle and other limitations of lifestyle, daily activities and work – due to pain and limited range of movement. The initial pain could be a result of adhesive capsulitis, bursitis, tendonitis, referred cervical pain etc. The restrictive range of movement can often be self – perpetuating and progressively debilitating. The pain causes a reluctance to use the shoulder, and as a result the shoulder becomes stiff and progressively more inflamed. Adhesions continue

to form in the joint capsule, the less movement that takes place the more the inflammation continues – it’s a vicious circle.

How may Bowen Therapy help? Early treatment, with soft tissue therapy is recommended to, in the first instance, relieve the pain and allow greater range of movement. The Bowen Technique is a remedial and holistic form of ‘hands on’ body work, gentle and effective. The careful and precise moves, which stimulate muscles and soft tissue, prompt the body to reset imbalances and start to heal injuries and chronic complaints. The experience of a treatment is gentle, subtle and relaxing. There is no manipulation and no force used. The body normally responds quickly to Bowen, making it a very time and cost effective treatment option.
