GET THE LOOK Add a little hotel luxury to your home.
By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
N
othing says luxury like a boutique bathroom - that feeling of marble beneath your feet, a giant granite vanity top and a rainforest shower head. But if you can’t wait until your summer holiday for some hotel hedonism, then think about updating your bathroom with one of these upcoming toilet trends. Matte look – Shiny surfaces are out, matte look is in, including in your bathroom. Go all out matte including floor and wall tiles, bath surround and vanity top, for a truly stylish sanctuary. At Coulon Stone, most of our natural stone surfaces – marble, granite, limestone and slate, along with our man-made quartz’s like Silestone, come in matte or rustic finishes, as well as shiny ones. Metallic – Chrome has been dominating bathroom fittings for decades, so the more glamorous amongst us will be delighted to hear that a new trend is emerging – modern metallic. Taps, shower heads and sink stands in golds, coppers and brass. Compliment your metallic fittings with classic marble tiles or black granite tops with champagne veins, like Cosmic Fusion. Stone vessel sinks – A hand-carved, stone vessel sink will add a luxuriously organic touch to your bathroom. It’s the sort of thing you’d find in a five star jungle spa. However you don’t have to travel to the equator to experience a sumptuous spa because at Coulon Stone we make them at our Stokenchurch workshop. We’ll help you chose the right piece of stone, the size and depth of your sink and we’ll hand carve to your design. For more information on prices, email us on info@coulonstone.com, call us on 01494 484333 or visit our showroom in Stokenchurch or our website www. coulonstone.com.

In the spotlight... New DS 7 Crossback By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.
MOTORING
@carwrit
eups At first sight, the DS 7 Crossback shows off conservative, rather than cool, characteristics. Yes, yes, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But this is my opinion, and someone needs to have one.
O
n the move, body lean is kept to a minimum, even though the steering is spongy and dead - and it isn’t perked up by changing the DS into its Sport mode. Don’t let me rain on the DS7 Crossback’s parade too much, though. The French motor is best kept in its Comfort setting, so that you can make the most of its respectable ride quality. This car isn’t all about the zero to 62mph sprint, it’s far happier as a laid-back cruiser. But it can still pull okay, with the 2.0-litre diesel model doing the 0-62mph in just under 10 seconds. The DS marque is launching the Crossback with four different trim levels, and the Performance Line DS 7, as driven here, is likely to be the model to please the masses. This car gets 19-inch alloys, a gloss black grille, and LED lights. In the cabin, leather and Alcantara abound, while a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment screen hogs the limelight. Playing second fiddle to the big display is a large analogue clock, perched above the ignition button. The infotainment system itself is intuitive and responsive and is supported by a bunch of touch sensitive switches for the cabin controls. But more remarkable in this car segment is the adding of an infrared night vision camera that projects a vivid picture onto the driver’s display. It picks out pedestrians and animals ahead of you, and, as I found out driving around Berkshire’s unlit backroads, it works! The only drawback is that the clever driver aid is an option costing £1600. Room in the cabin is good for five-up and it’s a very comfortable car fore and aft. Indeed, the DS 7 Crossback’s flat floor means that a rear seat occupant sitting in the middle will still have space. What’s more, the car’s boot is generously
22
proportioned with 555 litres of cargo capacity. The all-new DS’ weak point is its price-tag. At over £30,000, other more established premium brands may seem more attractive. The BMW X3 and Volvo XC40 are examples of the stiff competition the up-tothe-minute French machine is up against. Still, being different is quite appealing, so it’ll be interesting to see what 2018 holds for the DS 7 Crossback. Watch this space!

THE&HYPER SENSITIVE CHILD the moro reflex Did you know that we are all born with primitive reflexes that are essential to our early survival but they must be lost in order for our brain to develop properly? Neuro-developmental therapist help Jo RodhouseBSc(Hons), of Thame Therapy Clinic explains more. www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk
An infant’s palmar reflex allows
the baby to grasp anything that is placed in the palm but this reflex must be lost in order for the pincer grip to develop, which allows the child to develop fine motor skills of the hands. When primitive reflexes are retained, the development of postural reflexes and the maturing of the central nervous system (CNS), is impacted. As a result, the child can display immature patterns of behaviour and development. The Moro reflex is a hugely influential reflex that is triggered in response to a sudden stimuli or perceived threat. It is part of the infant’s fight-or-flight survival response which helps alert us to danger and summon help. When triggered the infant will ‘startle’ throwing their arms in the air. In a neuro-typical developing infant, the Moro reflex is inhibited between two to four months of age.
So what happens if the Moro reflex is retained beyond four months of infancy? Your child will have an exaggerated startle reaction, which can present itself as a hypersensitivity in one or more sensory channels. He may become over sensitive and over reactive to sensory stimulus resulting in
poor impulse control, sensory overload, emotional and social immaturity, anxiety and fears, anger and frustration. Other signs of a retained Moro reflex are motion sickness, poor balance & coordination, easily distracted with poor concentration & focus, an inability to adapt well to change. Your child will be constantly on alert. This over-activation of the fight-or-flight response can impact all functions in the body tied to the adrenal glands, which will be overworked from continuous activation. The high cortisol levels released from the adrenals can also result in an inability to balance blood sugar levels and can have negative implications on healthy sleep patterns, energy levels, stamina and mood swings throughout the day. It is often the case that the Moro reflex can be highly influential in the myriad of symptoms associated with ASD’s, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxic types. It is fortunately very simple to establish if the primitive reflexes have been retained. If retained, a programme of neural stimulation can be highly effective in not only inhibiting the reflex but also, stimulating maturation of the CNS.

It registers practitioners from 15 disciplines, including Bowen who have met UK-wide standards.
T
he CNHC was set up by the government with its sole purpose to protect the public. All registrants have agreed to be bound by the highest standards of conduct and are professionally trained and fully insured to practice. The General Medical Council guidance to doctors confirms that they are able to refer patients to practitioners on the CNHC register. You are therefore able to let your GP know, with confidence, that you are receiving remedial treatment from an accredited practitioner Private Healthcare Cash Plans: CNHC registration is recognised for reimbursement with a number of providers. This means clients may be able to claim for the cost of treatment when being treated by CNHC registered practitioners.

A Good Read The Monster of Shiversands Cove by Emma Fischel
Ah, a summer holiday by the beach! Hot days playing in the sand. Days full of digging and snorkelling. Sounds like bliss! At least it DID. Stan is fed up. For the last four years his family have holidayed with his best friend, Rory’s, family. And this year was supposed to be the same until Rory’s parents both got new jobs and moved away. Now he is stuck in a cottage by the sea with Magnus, his four-year-old brother who is insistent that he is going to spend the whole holiday searching for fairies. Of course, Stan knows that this is nonsense and that fairies don’t even exist. One night he decides he has had enough. Magnus will not stop talking about the fairy he caught and has called Harry. In a moment of anger, he agrees with Magnus that this may be a hot spot for fairies and elves, but that means it is also a hot spot for monsters! Magnus is terrified but of course he has no real need to be. Everyone knows that monsters aren’t real. Or are they?

Anthony Horowitz
The first novel in Horowitz’s phenomenally successful Alex Rider series, this is a must for fans of action, adventure and James Bond style one liners. Alex Rider is a seemingly ordinary 14 year old boy. However, when his uncle is killed in a car accident, his world begins to unravel. An orphan, Alex finds that without the protection of his guardian he is in the hands of his uncle’s employers – and they are not a bank, but MI6! Horowitz keeps the reader moving quickly from action sequence to action sequence, with a liberal amount of humour and contemporary references along the way. The structure is familiar to Bond fans, and once you have suspended your disbelief at the idea of a teenage spy, it all becomes gripping and plausible. In particular, the gadgets Alex uses and the villainous Herod Sayle will appeal to teenage readers – while the intriguingly sinister character of Yassen Gregorovitch is introduced here, ready to be developed further through the rest of the series. Ideal for fans of ripping yarns and reluctant readers alike, you will find that one chapter is never enough, as Horowitz is the master of the cliff-hanger ending. A 12 year old of my acquaintance told me recently that this book is ‘even better than the film’ – if you know any 12 year olds, then you will know that I need not say any more than that! Education
National Apprenticeship Week March 5th-9th Are you taking your GCSEs or A levels this year? Have you decided what to do afterwards? Many schools champion university or further education colleges but have you considered an apprenticeship? The 11th National Apprenticeship Week runs from 5th to 9th March 2018. During the week employers and apprentices from across England will come together to celebrate the success of apprenticeships whilst encouraging even more people to choose apprenticeships as a pathway to a great career. An apprenticeship is a chance to earn and learn. It allows you to mix working full-time and learning on the job with gaining a qualification. Anyone over 16 can be an apprentice. Courses last at least a year, and are available in a huge range of industries – there are apprenticeships in everything from accountancy to social media. It’s not just small companies who offer them; many of the big players such as Google, IBM, Barclays and Nestle offer excellent apprenticeships with good long-term prospects. In terms of learning styles, apprenticeships are best-suited to those people who want to get into the workplace straight away, or those who prefer a hands-on approach to learning. Some people (some teachers even) worry that an apprenticeship might limit a more able student’s options. This isn’t the case at all, if anything it opens them up. Thanks to the indepth industry experience apprenticeships provide, many apprentices progress further and faster in their chosen fields. There are also higher-level apprenticeships and some people choose to move into further education at a later stage, either at a conventional university or through a body like the Open University. Spending time in workplace as part of your apprenticeship means that you naturally develop important ‘soft skills’, such as communication and team work. These skills are transferrable whatever path your career ultimately takes. One major benefit of an apprenticeship is that you won’t have a student loan to pay off, and on top of this you are earning a salary and building a network of contacts. About 70% of apprentices are offered a permanent position at the end of their apprenticeship, and 90% remain in employment. To decide whether or not an apprenticeship is right in your case you need to do your research. Think about what your career ambitions are and look at potential pathways. Talk to employers at careers fairs and ask what they are looking for, and talk to people who have done an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are not right for everyone but they shouldn’t be viewed as a lesser option. Modern apprenticeships are a dynamic, flexible way to launch a career and one might be perfect for you.
