The snow has thawed and although there’s still a nip in the air it is definitely starting to feel more spring like outside. These sunnier days really do help to lift our moods and make us feel more motivated to get outside and start planning our gardens in readiness for the warmer weather on the horizon. So with this in mind, check out our Homes and Gardens section which is bursting with local businesses specialising in all areas of the home and if you need some inspiration for creating the perfect garden retreat turn to 11 for Coulon Stone’s monthly tips and advice. We have some new advertisers in this section too as well as in the Health and Wellbeing section in the form of another brand new monthly column focusing on the art of meditation and wellness. Turn to page 27 for the first instalment from Sophie Lacey of Linden Tree Meditation. As well as our other regular features there’s a (rather indulgent) pancake recipe on page 29 so you can really treat your taste buds on Shrove Tuesday which falls on 5th March this year. And if you fancy a family day out on the forthcoming May Bank Holiday turn to page 28 for your chance to WIN TICKETS to this year’s Abingdon Air & Country Show. And don’t forget, the clocks go forward by one hour at 1am on Sunday 31st March - see I told you Spring was coming! Until next month, enjoy reading...

In the spotlight... Toyota RAV4 2019 Review

MOTORING

@c

arwriteups Toyota’s fresh RAV4 comes in four trims, but all are factory-fitted with front fog lights, LED headlights, alloy wheels and a rear camera with reverse parking sensors. The flagship Dynamic I drove also has two-tone metallic paint and black 18-inch alloys.

T

he SUV’s cabin looks fittingly modern, with all housing an eight-inch touchscreen and a seven-inch display screen for the driver. Alas, the RAV4’s infotainment setup is not easy to use and looks old hat. Thankfully, build quality is excellent with the exterior and interior feeling well fastened together. The seats are comfy with oodles of adjustment for the driver and the rear chairs will tilt back for added comfort. Real-world practicality is a must for a big SUV, and the Toyota doesn’t embarrass itself in this department. There’s space for five-up, with masses of leg and headroom for a trio of adults in the rear. There are a couple of cupholders in the middle of the front seats, substantial door pockets, and a cubbyhole near the gearstick. There’s also a good-sized storage box beneath the car’s centre armrest. Importantly, the RAV4’s cargo capacity has been boosted by nearly 80 litres – and at 580-litres it’s comparable to the new Honda CR-V’s boot. Collapse the rear seats and the Toyota’s load area provides 1,690 litres of space. On the road, the all-new SUV supplies a satisfying ride that irons out road defects pleasantly and it should keep everyone content on long journeys. There’s a Sport switch by the gear stick, but don’t get carried away. It’s not a motor that inspires you to drive in an exceptionally athletic manner. The suspension is too soft, so you end up rolling in corners – and the steering is vague. The petrol engine wails if you do stamp hard on the gas, but the continuously variable transmission (CVT) does its job well enough. Mind you; it adds to the din when you demand power quickly. The Toyota is also plagued by wind noise around the mirrors at speed. The up-to-date RAV4 is only offered with a petrolelectric hybrid arrangement. The car’s combustion engine is a 2.5-litre unit and all models, bar the basic

06

Icon (this can only be acquired with front-wheel drive), come with frontwheel and all-wheel drive. The allwheel-drive variants contain another electric motor to work the rear wheels, and this enables a degree of off-road motoring. The Toyota’s biggest selling point is its low CO2 emissions; because they are low, business users will fork out less in terms of tax. But the RAV4 will attract non-business types too because it’s a big, safe car with lots of kit stuffed into it. Sure, some consumers may not like the hybrid set-up and will want a diesel. Well, they’ll be left wanting because no RAV4 oil-burner is ever going to be made. However, other motorists will approve of the hybridonly engine range’s eco-friendliness.

UPDATE YOUR OUTSIDE SPACE WITH THESE 2019 TRENDS...

S

pending time gardening has proven benefits to our mind, body and soul. It reduces stress and anxiety levels, improves our physical health and helps us to relax and sleep. As we finally move in to Spring, and thoughts turn to making the most of our gardens you may be thinking about updating your outside spaces. We’ve put together our 2019 garden trends for a little inspiration. INTERIOR MEETS EXTERIOR – This year houseplants will continue to grow in popularity, a trend that will creep out in to our gardens. Pick large, exotic plants with structured leaves, and hanging plants with thick, drooping foliage, unlike your traditional hanging basket. As well as filling our homes with houseplants, 2019 will continue to see a colourful approach to our home décor, which will be translated in to our gardens. Bright, exotic plants outside mirror bold, clashing prints inside. Fill your outside space with planters full of big, colourful plants and continue using reclaimed, industrial materials both outside and in.

CRAZY PAVING - Patios and stepping stones will play just as big a role in the décor of your garden as the plants and beds. Forget your bog standard uniform squares of concrete and try irregular slabs of more interesting natural stones like fossil filled limestones and green and copper slates. When picking sizes the bigger the better. Ensure you ask your stonemason or landscaper to help you pick a stone that is nonslip. STAYCATION SPOTS – Why holiday just once or twice a year? Create your own staycation sanctuary in your back garden and feel like you’re on holiday all summer. Set up a weatherproof speaker system so you can enjoy your favourite music, podcast or radio station, build a simple fire pit from slabs of slate, granite of concrete and invest in comfy outdoor furniture for the perfect staycation spot. For your free, no obligation quote on any of the above trends, or any other stone project, visit our website www.coulonstone.com

Can Beacon Festival 2018 Beat the £13,000 it gave to Charity in 2018 and become Plastic free? Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd June 2019

T

his is the challenge Beacon Festival organisers have set themselves as the event enters its 6th year. After giving away its largest ever donation to Charity in 2018, the Not for profit event is being held on June 21st and 22nd 2019 and the team are confident after last year’s success, 2019 will be the first time Beacon Festival SELLS OUT! The environment has always been at the heart of Beacon Festival, which is why 2019 should mean the festival will be a plastic free zone, as all vendors have been banned from using plastic at the venue, and we will be encouraging all festival goers to also think about the impact of using single use plastics. As well as having distinctly green principles, Beacon Festival has gained a reputation for booking exciting new musical talent. 2019 is no different with the festival already announcing two amazing headline acts. Friday night headliners Tankus The Henge will entertain the crowds with their funk filled repertoire of New Orleans inspired swing and heavy rock riffs. This self-proclaimed wild groove machine is currently breaking onto National Radio, so we really believe we have chosen one of the UK’s hardest working breakthrough bands. This year, the Music will extend to almost 1am on both nights and the main stage on Saturday will end with Guns or Roses, who will rock the Chilterns with their classic festival anthems! While again the festival will close at 2am on both nights. Beacon Festival continues to attract the best of local talent but this year they even have a touring band from New Zealand who are about to make waves in the UK, Hypnumb. Beacon Festival is a family friendly festival and even more emphasis has been put into the Kidzone than ever before to keep the youngsters (not to mention some of the adults!) amused. Real ale, cider and Cocktail bars will keep the liquid refreshments pouring while the eclectic international food selection caters for the humblest of pallets through to the adventurous foodie! Vegan options will also be available as the demand for this continues to rise and the Health and Wellbeing Zone is expanding to include more therapies and experiences as well as Workshops throughout the weekend. All this and it is a Not-for-Profit event run by volunteers and this year supporting Thames Valley Air Ambulance, Watlington and Chalgrove Children’s Family Hub First steps and Footsetps Foundation, Aylesbury, Thomely, Worminghall, Restore, Oxford. Tickets for the whole weekend are just £45.00 (Or £55.00 for camping) and under 16’s are free making it amazing value. Tickets are available from the website www.beaconfestival.net book early to avoid disappointment especially if you’re planning to camp as spaces sell fast.

Thame Youth Café benefits from grant from Music in the Park New computer gaming equipment will help more children participate

Music in the Park has donated £430 to Thame Youth Café (www.thameyouthcafe.org.uk) for the purchase of a Nintendo Switch gaming console, a game and two additional controllers.

The success of Thame Youth Café, which has an average of attendance of 55 young people and regularly attracts 70, meant that it was in need of the additional equipment to enable more of its visitors to participate in the fun. The Café is in Christchurch Methodist Church on Thame Upper High Street. Unlike traditional youth clubs, the Youth Café concept is not solely about entertaining young people but rather to provide a safe place for them to gather and, through leisure activities, bring about real transformation by promoting values and personal development to enable them to reach their full potential, both as individuals and within the community. There are different activities each week from cooking and mindfulness drawing to a graffiti wall and science experiments. It runs two Youth Cafés: one for 11-14s and one for 14-16s. Music in the Park Chair, Chris Fram, said, “Music in the Park is dedicated to supporting good causes in the local community. Thame Youth Café is a marvellous example of a charity that provides an invaluable service to the youth of Thame and we are delighted to support it again this year, following on from our previous donation in 2016”. Youth Café Manager, Nick Francis, added, “The Youth Café is very popular, and we aim to provide every visitor with an absorbing and interesting experience. The new gaming equipment will help us serve more young people”. This year’s Music in the Park takes place on Sunday 5th May. Read more about this event in our Sound of Music feature on page 20.

“I BECAME DEAF OVERNIGHT AND IT WAS TERRIFYING” let’s talk about sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL)

I have experienced SSHL twice in my lifetime with different outcomes. The first time I knew nothing about the condition or what to do and suffered permanent total loss of hearing in one ear. Second time around I was better informed and took immediate action, within 12 hours of its onset, and my hearing recovered after a two week course of steroid treatment. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss can happen to anyone of any age, at any time regardless of any previous hearing condition. It arrives unannounced without warning and if left untreated can be a permanent condition. It affects thousands of people every year, yet it remains little understood or researched. It is a medical emergency and prompt action is essential to try and reverse the hearing loss. You need to seek expert medical advice as soon as possible from an audiologist or go straight to A&E or an ENT department. What is SSHL? SSHL is defined as a drop of at least 30 decibels in more than 3 frequencies over a short period of time and most commonly affects just one ear. It seems to be most common between the ages of 30-60 and around 50% of people recover given the right treatment. Like any hearing loss, SSHL is invisible so it is difficult to impress upon medical staff the urgency of the condition. At Aston hearing we understand how important it is to access treatment quickly and can provide an emergency audiogram to show evidence of the hearing loss and also rule out other possible causes such as ear wax. Princes Risborough 01494 733845

What are the symptoms? You may notice a ‘pop’ in one ear before the hearing disappears or it may fade away over a few hours and it is often first noticed when you try to use the phone on the affected ear. SSHL may also be accompanied by vertigo (dizziness), tinnitus (ringing in the ear) or a feeling of fullness in the ear. What causes SSHL? SSHL is thought to have various causes that may include viral infections, blood circulation problems, head trauma or autoimmune disease. In most cases the exact cause is never found, which makes prevention much harder. The best advice is to get a hearing test so you understand what level your hearing should be day to day. This will give you a measure by which to compare any change. Hearing is so often taken for granted yet it helps you to learn, work, communicate and socialise. Losing this important sense is so much more than just an inconvenience.

How to be Flawsome

www.shapers-chinnor.co.uk

With Jemma Stevens of Flawsome Jem

Hello you Flawsome lot, here’s my ‘jems’ of wisdom for this month to help keep you focused on your goals:

Hair & Beauty

01844 353838

1. BE Positive: We

all have moments of negativity especially when we don’t like what we see in the mirror, on the scales or even if we have just had a ‘bad’ meal or workout. Throughout the process, you need to learn to snap out of that negative mind set and focus on the positives. Being positive will not only make you feel better about yourself but will help you progress further.

Nails | Hair Make-Up | Tanning Beauty Treatments | Massage | Homeopathy Reflexology & more. Gift Vouchers Available.

2. BE Realistic: When setting your goals make sure they are realistic. Having goals that are unrealistic means you’re less likely to reach them which will leave you feeling de-motivated. For example; trying to get to a weight you were 20 years ago will most likely not happen now.

3. BE Ready: A lot of us think we are ready to start a nutrition or fitness plan when we are not. There is no point wanting to make a change if you make a half-hearted effort. You will need to accept that you must make some lifestyle changes in order to reach your goals. 5. BE Accountable: It’s very easy to pass blame or make excuses for why your healthy eating or exercise routine isn’t going to plan. But it is you that is in control of the decisions you make. PT’s, coaches, nutritionists can only help you so much, it is you who must take responsibility for the work you do and don’t put in. 6. BE Prepared: By failing to prepare, you’re

preparing to fail! One of the only ways to keep on track is by making sure you are prepared. Set some time aside to meal prep for the week and plan your workouts. The results with speak for themselves. Need some support? IMPROVING THE FUNCTION OF YOUR LYMPHATIC SYSTEM With Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy

Most people are familiar with the body’s circulatory system that carries blood to and from the tissues, but few understand there is another equally vital system of vessels – the lymphatic system that removes cell wastes, proteins, excess fluid, viruses, and bacteria. In this article, Nainesh Vasistha, therapist at Thame Therapy Clinic explains how a well-functioning lymphatic system contributes to healthy body tissue and plays an important part in the body’s immune responses.

L

ike roots of a tree, the lymphatic system starts as tiny vessels that eventually branch into larger tubes resulting in a network of lymph vessels and lymph nodes. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) therapy is designed to improve functioning of the lymphatic system by using light pressure and gentle, rhythmical movement of the skin which stimulate contraction of lymphatic vessels. As a result a greater amount of metabolic waste products and excess fluid are removed from the body’s tissues and enter this lymphatic system. The fluid, or lymph, passes through lymph nodes acting as biological filtration stations cleaning and destroying dead cells, bacteria and other waste products, enabling clean lymph to return to the blood system. MLD can benefit just about everyone - here’s why; After a sports injury or surgery, including breaks, fractures, torn ligaments and sprains areas with swelling and trauma struggle to deal with excess fluid. MLD can move this excess fluid to other areas of the body, where the undamaged or un-overloaded lymphatic system can take it up, thus reducing congestion at local lymph nodes. At a micro-level rubbish is cleared away faster, swelling and pain is reduced and healing is speeded up. MLD may be also particularly helpful for hip and knee replacements and cosmetic surgery. Because it’s so gentle, MLD is well tolerated by patients suffering with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. They often experience sore trigger points throughout the body and by encouraging lymph flow and removing waste products, this gentle form of bodywork can help restore immune function and improve vitality. MLD can have a pain-relieving and calming effect on the whole nervous system; during treatment, touch receptors in the skin send messages to the brain, which in turn block messages from pain receptors. Surgical procedures involving lymph node removal, such as breast cancer surgery, can cause limbs to swell, this condition is called lymphoedema. MLD is now widely accepted and plays a key part in the treatment of both primary and secondary lymphoedemas. For more information on Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy, contact Nainesh Vasistha at Thame Therapy Clinic on 01844 215555 or visit www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk

Fibromyalgia, Myalgic Encephalitis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ... Fibromyalgia (FM) and the related conditions of Myalgic Encephalitis (ME) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are massively debilitating. It is difficult to provide a definitive diagnosis given that symptoms can be related to many other conditions, such as Lupus. Investigations can prove time consuming, with a process of elimination, and criteria for the patient to have experience at least 3 months in pain. This process can be very stressful. There are no lab tests or X-rays that are able to identify this chronic condition. Once given a diagnosis the patient is faced with no effective conven-tional medical solution. There is no clear cause and no clear solution. Many of my clients present in my clinic with either a diagnosis of MF, ME, CFS or with symptoms and issues that can match any of these conditions. The history, for each, is usually the same: ‘I’ve been to the doctors, I’ve had tests (bloods), I’m in pain, my lifestyle is limited, I’m off work’ or ‘ The prescribed painkillers aren’t helping and I’m not sure about taking antidepressants” and ‘I was referred to a pain clinic but really the exercises are too much for me’, and I was told to manage the pain’ Some patients are told that they imagine the pain. This is such a common scenario in my clinic, generally the clients I see are female, although children and teenagers present with the same issues. For each this is a long term chronic disorder. Symptoms are variable, which makes a 10 minute appointment with the GP so difficult. Everybody is different however, to generalise, there tends to be a history of

- Pain - Fatigue

The underlying causes are not know, however there is substantial evidence to suggest that stress, trauma, injury and post viral situations are seriously considered.

How may Bowen Therapy help? I take a full medical history from every client; we may discuss or unearth, past injuries, grief and lifestyle. Whilst the treatment is hands on, the emphasis is on how the client presents and attention is given to each individual and their lifestyle needs and wants. Pain, however, is real and every client wishes that to be addressed. Bowen Therapy, with the hands on, gentle, noninvasive, non-manipulative movements over soft tissue aims to help the body relax and promote healing. This treatment is through clothing. In my clinic I have helped many clients on a path to leading a full and active life. With my skills as a Bowen / Neuro Structural Practitioner your individual concerns will be addressed. are everywhere these days, with numerous apps and streamed meditations available at the scroll of a fingertip. However, learning to meditate with a skilled and qualified teacher can really help to establish a sustainable meditation practice; ironing out any challenges, correcting any negative habits and making sense of the method, science and history behind this ancient practice. A good teacher takes time to get to know you and teaches with your individual health & wellbeing in mind. Meditation has many benefits for the health of both mind and body. As well as helping to calm and focus the mind in order to alleviate stress, it can help with chronic pain, insomnia, depression & anxiety, and hormonal changes associated with menopause. The chemistry of the brain and the structure of the brain itself can be altered with a regular meditation habit. Mindfulness and meditation are often confused. Mindfulness, simply put, is focus on and nonjudgemental awareness of the present moment. You can be mindful in any activity, not just meditation: you can walk, bathe, draw, or cook mindfully as long as you are fully present and aware. Mindfulness meditation typically uses the breath as the focus, allowing awareness of bodily sensations, emotions and thoughts as they pass through the mind. However, not all meditation is mindful; you may be asked to contemplate something specific, cultivate a particular emotion, or be guided in a visualisation. At Linden Tree Meditation, we explore a number of different techniques and styles of meditation borrowed from secular and spiritual practices across all major cultures. I am trained & accredited by the British School of Meditation, a secular training school, which means I am not affiliated to any particular meditation tradition. On my beginners’ courses we cover mindfulness meditation through the breath, focused meditations using aids such as sounds, candles or affirmation cards, mantra and chanting, guided visualisation, and body scan/yoga nidra for relaxation and sleep. ‘LIKE’ Linden Tree Meditation on Facebook, for further information about Courses, Classes, Outdoor Meditations and Workshops/Events.

The 20th Abingdon Air and Country Show on Sunday 5th May provides a great day out for all the family with “something for everyone”, whilst raising money for Thames Valley Air Ambulance. Once again we are organising another action packed programme when we are hoping to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day which took place on 6th June 1944. We are awaiting confirmation of RAF and other military participation but we hope we will have some modern representation of the Allies involved whilst we already have booked a P-51 Mustang “Miss Helen” and a P-47 Thunderbolt “Nellie”, examples of two iconic US aircraft that took part on that momentous day in 1944! On the ground we welcome back The Rockets Children’s Motorcycle Display Team, the Radio Days big Band and the ever popular Mangledwurzels. Ingredients

flour 115g (4oz) plain Pinch salt 1 large egg t of milk) 285ml (half a pin , melted er tt bu ) oz 115g (4 s, strained on lem Juice from 2 erara sugar to Caster or Dem taste.

Method:

How do you eat yours?

Over the years I’ve tried my pancakes with fruit, maple syrup, and a variety of savoury fillings, but I keep coming back to fresh lemon juice and a sprinkling of sugar...irresistible. Here’s a delicious recipe for the perfect pancakes.

1.

To make the batter: sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Beat in the egg and a little of the milk until smooth. Gradually beat in the remaining milk and add 4 tablespoons of the melted butter. Cover the bowl and leave to stand for one hour.

2.

In a small non-stick frying pan heat some of the butter until sizzling, but taking care not to let it burn. Pour enough batter into the pan to coat the base evenly. Cook over

a moderate heat until the pancake is light golden brown underneath and looks dry on top. Flip over (try to do this with style!) and cook the other side until golden. Continue until all the batter is used. The recipe should make 10-12 pancakes. 3.

You can keep the pancakes warm in the oven (Gas mark 1 / 140C) until they are all cooked, but in our house they’re barely out the frying pan before they’re scoffed.

Enjoy!
