01865 407757 Do you work on your own vehicle? ~~~~~~ Are you a member of a Car Club looking for a place to meet? ~~~~~~ Do you need somewhere secure and dry to store your vehicle? ~~~~~~ Ever wished you could work in a warm, professional quality garage or needed to get under your vehicle to complete a job?

This is Your Garage is a unique new business coming to South Oxfordshire, that

will allow you to do all of the above and more.

This month Look Local met with owner, Dave Ridgway, to ask your burning questions about how this new concept in vehicle care could change your life. What made you decide to open ‘This is Your garage?’ I have always wanted to run my own business but like many people had not had the “killer” idea that would convince me to give up a very successful and secure career. This changed a few years ago when I was stuck under my 1973 Bay Window Camper van cleaning off old paint and dirt! I thought to myself how good it would be if there was a local garage that would rent me their lift and tools so I could avoid crawling around on the floor. There wasn’t anything local to me and that is when I first started thinking

12 06

about TIYG. Two years later and after a whole lot of research and planning we are now only weeks away from opening the first TIYG site. What does ‘This is your garage’ consist of as a site? The original idea was just about providing somewhere people like me could work on their own cars. The “Self Service” workshop is still the heart of the business but the concept has grown to also include secure vehicle storage, a retail shop selling parts, tools and TIYG merchandise and probably the biggest addition is “The Club”. We wanted to also bring like minded people together and offer a meeting place for local clubs. To do this we are creating a social space overlooking the main workshop where our members can meet, chat and recharge in a really cool and comfortable environment.

The UK’s Premier Self Service Workshop, Car Club and Vehicle Storage Facility. Who do you see as a typical ‘This is Your garage’ customer or client’ if such a thing exists? TIYG will hopefully appeal to a wide range of people. Whilst TIYG is the perfect place for owners of classic and vintage vehicles to work on their cars and meet other enthusiasts we believe the facility has something to offer anyone that is interested in cars and wants to work on their own vehicle. Anyone from your first time driver that can’t afford to pay a garage to fix their car through to amateur race teams wanting to prep for their next big race could use TIYG. What kit can people expect to be able to use at the garage? Each of our 7 work bays will come with a comprehensive tool kit. We will also supply specialist tools and a range of air tools that can be hired

individually (for use at TIYG only). We will provide all drainers for clean oil changes and we will dispose of any waste oils for you. In the parts preparation area our members will have access to parts washers and a media blasting cabinet. A full range of lifting equipment (engine cranes, stands etc) will also be available. All of our equipment will be of a professional quality and well maintained. What is the ‘The Club’ all about? As well as the workshop we wanted to create a place where car enthusiasts and clubs could meet. The Club at TIYG is going to be the social hub of the business. We can seat up to about 50 people and will be able to cater for small or large groups. Members will be able to relax and unwind in a comfortable and welcoming space. Are we going to see events

at ‘This is Your Garage’ too? Yes, during the Summer we hope to put on our events as well as host local club open days / evenings. The facility will also be available for members to hire for private events and parties. When will the whole project be fully functioning? Our vehicle storage facility is up and running now. The main workshop is being fitted out as is the club area. If all goes to plan we will welcome our first customers to the facility in early April 2015. Motoring Vehicle Review:

Cars for new parents By Tim Barnes-Clay, weekly road test journalist for Confused.com. Tim Barnes-Clay

One of the biggest shocks of your life can be becoming a parent for the first time. Unquestionably, there are many areas of your lifestyle you sacrifice when that little bundle of joy arrives.

Surrendering to most of

the changes isn’t an issue because the wonder of your child being born is more than worth it. If truth be told, the only thing that really stung for me was that I’d have to buy a sensible car for the first time. “The horror of it all”, I hear you cry. Well, for a petrolhead, having to swap a sporty number for a sensible motor really went against the grain. I think all this symbolised a transition into fully-fledged adulthood. Getting rid of my sporty, two-door, Mazda RX-7 and powerful motorbike then replacing them with an estate car really made me feel boring. After a while though you soon realise why there are so many dull looking child carrying wagons around. You may want to hold on to your sporty two door car, but try leaning into the rear and strapping your baby into its child seat - you’ll soon have backache from hell. It’s been a few years since

08

my first offspring arrived; I have three children now, aged eight, five and 18 months old. I’m not an expert, but I’d say I’ve enough experience to know what makes a good car for parents.

must. It’s virtually impossible to find an estate car or hatchback that’ll get all kids safely belted in across the rear bench. So, as well as a Peugeot 5008, you should look at MPVs that, ideally, have three rows of seats.

First off, if you only have one baby, don’t go rushing for a people carrier. If you have three kids then they’re great. I know, because my wife and I had to buy a Peugeot 5008 due to child number three. Getting three safety seats across the rear of anything other than a people-carrier results in knuckle-crazing vexation as you fish around trying to plug the seatbelts in.

MPVs such as: the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso; Ford S-Max; Ford Galaxy; SEAT Alhambra and Renault Grand Scenic are perfect – and they’re safe. They’re not cheap though, with all of them costing over £20,000 new. So instead opt for one that’s a year old, from a reputable dealer and you can find yourself paying around the £12,000 mark for, say, a low mileage Peugeot 5008.

If you have one infant then go for a car with a decent five-star safety rating and a large boot. A Skoda Superb estate or a Vauxhall Insignia hatchback are perfect examples, especially if you’re planning a second child. The amount of baby stuff you have to take with you every time you go anywhere still astounds me. You’ll be amazed how quickly a buggy, nappy bag, toys, travel cot – not to mention your own luggage. If you have three or more rug-rats, then, as I say, a people carrier or multipurpose-vehicle (MPV) is a

When all is said and done, whichever vehicle you choose, getting the right child seat is clearly vital. Starting with your baby’s very first journey home from the hospital, ensuring your little one is safely restrained in a suitable car seat is the only way to guarantee optimum protection. Minni-E Mi -Eggg Ea Easste terr Coooki Co kiees

Recipe

To make these de snacks, you will vilish need;

275g plain flour ½ tsp bicarbonat e of soda 100g caster suga r 220g dark brow n soft sugar A pinch salt 180g melted butt er 1 egg 1 egg yolk A few drops va nilla extract 250g mini eggs 150g melted white chocolate.

This recipe mak es approx 14 cookie s.

Easter baking is all about the kids, so why not make these tempting treats with them whilst they are off school?! Super easy to make, and even easier to demolish, children love pressing mini eggs into this squidgy mix and dripping melted chocolate all over the end product. Go on, don’t be afraid of getting a bit messy in the kitchen this month! Method: 1.

Preheat the oven to 180c (fan) and grease 2 or 3 baking trays.

2.

Mix together your flour, bicarbonate of soda, sugars and salt in a large bowl.

3.

Melt your butter in a jug and whisk in the egg, egg yolk and vanilla extract.

4.

Pour your buttery liquid into the dry ingredients and mix like mad until you have a soft, pliable dough.

5.

Roughly chop up your mini eggs into large pieces (maybe a job for the adult helper) and press evenly into the cookie dough.

6.

Take dessert spoon sized balls of the dough and line onto the baking trays,

allowing several inches for spreading. 7.

Bake for 12-15 minutes and remove from the oven when still soft- this will ensure that when cooled, the centre remains chewy and delicious.

8.

Melt your white chocolate over a pan of simmering water and drizzle all over the cooled cookies (you could pipe some Easter-themed designs onto the cookies but this way is more fun!).

Enjoy! And Happy Easter... By Tassy Goodall.

Health & Wellbeing Stress is everywhere! It is one of the most common conditions experienced by people in the UK with as many as 80% living with high stress levels. That’s huge, but did you know that each of us has the ability to manage and greatly lessen stress naturally by engaging with the power of our own minds.

Here, Janice Bowles (pictured),

a hypnotherapist of 20 years, explains how she teach individuals how they can use their own inner strength to heal the reaction to the conditions that create stress! “In today’s hectic, fast-paced world stress levels are rising and living with it is becoming something that we are all becoming used to. This however doesn’t have to be

12

the case. I provide a series of Mind Power Workshops designed to help people live more fulfilling, happier lives by providing them with a set of simple skills that when applied to their own lives will help them tackle their stress levels before the signs of fatigue, anxiety and depression begin to manifest. That isn’t to say that you will never experience stress again because the stress response is integral to us as a species, but you will know exactly what to do to if and

when stress presents itself. The upcoming ‘No More Stress’ session will act as a preventative measure against stress. Situations that once left you feeling frustrated or sent you into a bad mood, or experiencing the debilitating physical symptoms of stomach cramps, headaches, nausea and more, will greatly reduce and potentially become a thing of the past. The health benefits for dealing with stress in your life is essential to longevity. Overeating, drinking and smoking are just a few of the bad habits we can resort to as a way to ‘help’ relax us. Most of us a totally unaware that we each have within us the tools we need to resolve it.” For more information about Stress Management visit

Visceral Osteopathy

Kate Lichfield BOst, BSc(Hons) Registered Member of the General Osteopathic Council (GOSC), explains the science behind the practice of this complementary therapy. What is Visceral Osteopathy? Visceral Osteopathy is one part of general Osteopathy, but the techniques focus more on the treatment of the internal organs. Our organs do not ‘float around’ inside our bodies but instead are attached to the musculoskeletal system via ligaments and other connective tissues. Strains can occur in these structural connections from surgical scars, adhesions, posture or injury that can cause tension patterns which in turn can lead to compensations in the body.

What is the treatment like? After diagnosis, Osteopaths gently release tensions in the body using a variety of soft manipulative techniques such as stretching and soft tissue massage to encourage

the normal mobility, tone and motion of the soft tissues and joints. If the viscera are implemented, this may involve manipulating the internal organs through the abdominal wall. Sometimes advice and exercises are given to the patient to encourage better breathing patterns and to help mobilise the spine and other joints.

What could Visceral Osteopathy help? Visceral Osteopathy can be helpful in treating:

One less Headache...

Most of us have some kind of headache at some time in our lives. They are often treated with over the counter remedies and forgotten as the pain diminishes. Many people, however, are troubled by regularly occurring headaches and have difficulty in managing their condition, which can be excruciatingly painful, debilitating and have a dramatic effect on lifestyle. Bowen Therapist, Jen Webster explains how this holistic therapy may help in treating headaches and migraines.

greatly in their type, duration, cause and severity, for example, a self-inflicted hangover headache goes within a few hours, whereas headaches associated with an infectious illness improve as and when the illness is over. Migraines are experienced as a headache of at least moderate severity usually on one side of the head and occurring with other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, light and noise sensitivity and activity intolerance. They can last from a few hours to several days.

How may Bowen help with headaches and migraines? As a holistic therapy the Bowen Technique treats the individual as an integrated biodynamic system as opposed to treating isolated ailments. The light and subtle touch of Bowen Therapy involves no awkward bending, twisting or repositioning. Treatment takes place through light clothing. The experience is gentle and relaxing. It is believed that the Bowen Technique prompts the body to reset, repair and balance itself. Clients report the experience of pain relief, improvement in function and recovery of energy. Migraines (and headaches) can be triggered by a combination of factors ranging from surgery, accidents, hormones, sleep patterns, exercise, hunger, allergies, stress and jaw issues and the list goes on. Therefore, it is important that, during your consultation, all aspects of your lifestyle and past medical history are discussed and documented.

A common scenario in my clinic is that many clients present with a primary concern and are amazed that we discuss their headaches and possible causes during a full history consultation. In the majority of cases headache issues are addressed during the course of treatment. It has been interesting for me to note that jaw issues following dental work may be a cause of debilitating headaches. Bowen has, in several cases recently, addressed Temporomandibularjoint (TMJ) imbalances using its soft tissue techniques, with positive outcomes. Bowen’s holistic way a treating will most often get to the root of problems gently and efficiently, and therefore must be considered as a valid option for the treatment of Headaches and Migraines. One of Jen’s clients reports, “I started having headaches, nausea and dizziness in mid November 2013 and was diagnosed with migraines. After suffering daily headaches for over 4 months and medication not working I decided to see Jen. The treatments are very relaxing, and the results were evident almost immediately. I’ve had 4 sessions and am seeing the benefits being sustained for an increasing amount of time with each treatment. I would definitely recommend it.”

any of you will have seen the episode of Downton Abbey where Lady Mary rode her horse in a race at her “local” point-to-point. What you may not know is that the “race” actually took place much closer to home, at Kingston Blount racecourse, near Chinnor. Kingston Blount is a real racecourse, with real fences! It holds four meetings a year, with the first taking place on Saturday 8th March, a second on Saturday 18th April and two in May. Racing at Kingston Blount is a great family day out. There’s a bar with real ale, several food outlets including a barbecue featuring home-made venison burgers, and numerous stalls if you fancy a bit of shopping between races. Most importantly of all, there are seven races to bet on, with a row of bookmakers offering tempting odds on every horse in every race. Local trainer Alan Hill is always wellrepresented, and last year runners came from as far afield as Devon and Wales.

Entry is just £20 for a car full (£10 for single occupancy) so bring as many family and friends as you can (legally) fit into your vehicle. What’s more, Look Local have teamed up with the race course to offering our readers a £5.00 discount voucher on car park entry for either the March or the April meeting (See page 20). Just hand it in to your friendly parking attendant and you’re quids in straight away! Rocky Mountaineer...

Canada is a hugely diverse destination with something to offer everyone. Whether you are looking for a cosmopolitan city experience or a wilderness adventure, you will find them all, along with much, much more in this wonderful country.

One of the most iconic trips in Canada is the

2 day journey on the Rocky Mountaineer train, rightly described as the most spectacular train trip in the World. It departs the vibrant city of Vancouver (often voted the best place in the world to live) and heads on a 2 day adventure towards the Rocky Mountain resort towns of Banff or Jasper. An overnight stay in a hotel is included to ensure that you don’t miss any of the jaw dropping scenery along the way. You can choose between 3 fabulous levels of service on-board - Redleaf, Silverleaf or luxurious Goldleaf, where you can enjoy gourmet cuisine and breath-taking views in the glass domed carriage. Travelling in Canada could not be easier. We can offer a wide range of planned self-drive trips or help you plan your own tailor made holiday to travel at your own pace. We can also suggest a selection of organised coach tours aimed at making the most out of the

time that you have in the country. As many of the popular areas are National Parks or in remote spots then booking early is always recommended.

The Greenhouse Guide People often ask me, “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” My reply is always, “My greenhouse.”

often better in a small garden where everything has to earn its keep. Western red cedar is good because it lasts a long time and weathers really well. Greenhouses are even more useful if they are heated. I started out with paraffin heaters, but found they produced a lot of condensation and were messy and smelly. Electric heating is best, and very economical if you fit a system thermostat so that it only switches on when necessary.

A greenhouse has many benefits, chief of which for me is that it extends the gardening year. With a greenhouse you can potter in your garden all year round, and grow a range of plants which simply wouldn’t thrive without the extra protection. Before choosing a greenhouse you will need to check whether your local planning authority imposes any restrictions. While you don’t normally need planning permission, building regulations do have to be adhered to. Buy the biggest greenhouse you can afford that will fit comfortably on to your plot - you will always fill it! But even if you can only afford a tiny one - my first one had a base of just 4’ by 5.5’ (1.2m by 1.7m) - it will still be a worthwhile investment. The aluminium- framed types are very sturdy and relatively cheap. Wooden-framed constructions are more attractive though, and

Apart from heat the most important factor is ventilation. In high summer this is vital to prevent your plants from cooking. Automatic arms which open the vents at a pre-designated temperature are really useful. External blinds are also very good as they prevent sun scorch. Finally, fit staging along one edge of the greenhouse for your pots, and dig a soil or gravel bed on the other side for things like tomato plants. Now all you have to do is plant some seeds and invest in a few tender perennials. By Rachel Leverton.
